so here is where our wild goose chase starts. I was going through a 2012 f1 blog's nico tag. it's actually pretty rare for early 2010s blogs to have comprehensive tagging systems so whenever I find one I try to go thru it all. and I come across this v cute nico image (cropped for posterity. payoff will be worth it promise)

so why did I do it? why did I spend hours of my life on this? cause it's fun. it's like a mystery and it itches at my skin. many times I'm not successful which is why the times I am feels so rewarding because it feels almost like detective work, finding and refinding something, overturning evidence. and I have a brain that just functions Like This.

Whatnot ~ The long road to Saffron

Welcome to Whatnot, where I just kinda talk about random thoughts I'm having at the moment. Irl I say the phrase "... and whatnot" a lot—but do you ever wonder what exactly the whatnot is? That's what this blog will be.

I love me a good, long journey. I don't always know what decisions will lead me to a worthwhile journey, but the best ones tend to arise from spur-of-the-moment ideas and just saying "sure, let's give it a try." For example, this whole GameGirl31 project. Nintendo added GameBoy games to NSO, I noticed how few of the titles I recognized, and I decided it could be a unique challenge to play them. It is now setting in exactly how much time this will take me.

Pokémon Yellow, for instance. I don't know this particular generation super well, but I understand the Pokémon formula well enough. Despite this, more than 20 hours have been dedicated to this playthrough so far. I've only earned four gym badges (five if you count the one I skipped, accidentally?), meaning I'm about halfway through the experience. Just stating the facts here. We can imagine what the timer will read by the end.

I'm actually playing a session right now, taking a break in the middle to write this entry. I left off in the middle of route 14. In-game, I've been really wanting to return to Vermillion City because, about five hours back, I managed to completely avoid fighting Lt. Surge and then leave without the badge I need. That being said... five hours later, I couldn't be stuck on the more opposite side of the Kanto region. There is no quick way back to Vermillion from Fuchsia. I can only press forward. And the next leg of the journey is... the long, long road to Saffron City.

So, I packed as many hyper potions and ultra balls as I could into my trainer bag, and then started on the road. The journey is so long that it's actually made up of 5 separate routes.

I can feel the length of the journey as I begin dismissing the possibility of travelling back to Fuchsia City for the Pokécenter. I'll just have to rely on the resources I've got. The only things to be found along these routes are other traveling trainers and the occasional patch of grass.

I've complained in the past about this game looking kinda ugly, in the graphics department. The overworld sprites are quite simplistic. The colors are limited. Often, it feels like I'm just staring at pencil lines etched in a white void. Yet somehow, the simplicity of the landscape around me as I bike the miles of this road... a true sense of distance sets in. DUCKIE is so far away from home. She's so far from anything that even resembles home. Only passing blades of grass, bushes, a small forest, abandoned fence posts... lines etched into the world by nature itself.

And then I read a sign.

Route 14 / West to Fuchsia City

There's something very haunting about a sign that only points you in one direction. Dead end. One way. Do not enter. Or maybe a highway sign that names a city you've never heard of about 50 miles away. This sign didn't tell me I was going anywhere. It only told me the quickest way back to civilization.

For those who don't know, in my actual life, I recently drove over 3,000 miles across the United States—nonstop except to sleep and eat, over the course of 6 days. It was another one of those decisions that felt so much smaller when it was just an idea in my head. Then I got into the car and drove away from my house, for once with no intentions of coming back. Then I crossed my first state border. Then I passed one last small town. Then, only the lines of rock and shrubs etched in the world around me.

I saw a lot of signs like this one on the long drive. Route 14 / West to Fuchsia City. It's just a practical sign to put up. A statement of fact as to where the nearest market would be, for instance. Yet something about it ineffably reads like a warning.

Subtle game design choices like this leave an impression on me like nothing else. The developers could have written "Road connecting to Saffron City," like they did with every other sign in the game. They could have put up no sign at all. But they chose this sign. I don't know; that made this world feel so much more real to me. And once again, for the first time ever, I think the simplicity of the graphics in this game do a great service to the tone and worldbuilding at this leg of the game. The same scenery passing you by over and over again. Eventually blurring into abstract lines etched in the void. You have grown so much as a trainer, to make it this far all by yourself. This is what it feels like to be far from home. It feels sickeningly lucid to become so aware of the bigness of the world.

That's a feeling only video games can give you, baby! And that's why video games are art, as if I even had to argue that. But who knew such strong emotions could come from a game that looks like... this?

Go on, guess which Pokémon that is. I bet you can't.

And so, I'm actually pretty excited for the long journey to Saffron City. It is, after all, just a small part of the long journey to beating Pokémon Yellow. Which is, of course, only a small part of the long journey to play 31 GameBoy games!

Well, at least for these journeys, I don't have to sleep in my car. :p

Let's Analyze - Alec in CoFA

So, I’ve been seeing plenty of discourse on two of my mutual’s blogs about this topic… so I thought I’d sit down and write another analysis post about my beloved Alec Lightwood cause people are still giving him shit for a book that came out ten years ago 🤦‍♀️

This is gonna be in two parts, and I'm putting both under the cut:

PART 1 - ALEC’S INSECURITIES 

So, the first part - how Alec’s insecurities drove him to saying stupid things in CoFA

A quick disclaimer - I’m NOT blaming Alec alone for his and Magnus’s break up. What happened was pretty complicated, and the blame cannot be put on one person alone. 

That said, let’s start with Magnus and Alec’s early ‘official’ relationship, in trsom.

These scenes are taken from only the first part of the book, but I’m pretty sure they’re more than enough to get a sense of Alec’s insecurities and all the chinks in their relationship. Throughout the entirety of trsom, we see more bits and pieces of Alec’s insecurities about Magnus’s sexuality, and his past and all the people he might have known - and that’s okay! Insecurities happen, cause brains are stupid like that.

But all of Alec’s insecurities could’ve been laid to rest with a simple conversation. But the conversation never happens. Magnus tends to deflect and change the topic every single time his past is brought up. I understand Magnus’s reasons for hiding his past, of course, but it doesn’t help his relationship with Alec. Magnus hiding a good chunk of his past will inevitably lead to Alec questioning himself - why is he so secretive? Why is he not telling me anything? Does he not trust me? ...and so on.

And when Alec is already feeling insecure in this relationship, this happens - (sorry about the terrible cropping btw)

And then later, while Magnus is talking to Camille,

Now… when people are insecure about something, they get irked at the smallest of things. I’m saying this as an insecure person myself. So now, you've got Alec, who's insecure as fuck, and his vacation with the person he loves got cut short by his ex who refuses to talk to anyone but him, and when they get there, his lover and his lover's ex seem to have obvious chemistry, he gets hit with the reality that his lover has dated several, probably even hundreds of people before him; and he has to leave them alone in a room so they can talk, and then he hears the ex basically just list all his shortcomings - i.e, his mortality, his appearance is compared to some random dead guy (sorry, Will) whom your lover had a crush on, which is just weird, and when you've had enough and open the door, it's to see your lover and his ex, standing close as fuck, and he's! touching! her! face! and! looking! into! her! eyes!

*takes a sip of water* yeahhhh... Alec was straight up having a bad day.

And at this point, a) Alec is still in his first relationship. He didn't get to navigate romance when he was younger, and while there's nothing wrong with that, there weren't exactly cutesy presentations titled 'how to keep your relationships healthy' floating around the internet. Heck, he didn’t know the internet. He didn't know that he had to communicate with Magnus, and it doesn't help that boy avoids conversations about feelings like the plague. And b) at this point, Alec would be facing several negative emotions - insecurity, obviously. Hurt. Helplessness, because of his mortality. Fear, that he might not live up to Magnus’s past lovers. Jealousy at seeing Magnus and Camille so close.

Negative emotions like these often tend to show up as anger or sorrow... and in Alec’s case, that would be anger. Which leads us to THIS- (🙈)

So. Alec dealt with his insecurities... by being a mean, mean bitch to Magnus :/

Let's break this scene down, slowly, bit by bit.

First, Alec cuts into a conversation between Magnus and Jordan, when Magnus mentions Woolsey Scott, followed the rest of that particular page. To Alec, he's just a figure from Magnus’s past, and a possible lover, though in Alec’s defense Woolsey Scott WAS Magnus’s lover. This is the first instance that we see in which Alec lashes out at Magnus. It seems like he's trying to make a point to Magnus - "I don't know anything about your past, and so I don't know who you've had romances with, but I want to know." Except he makes his point in the worst way possible and ends up slutshaming Magnus.

The "What's true?" line, in response to Jordan saying "so it's true what they say about warlocks, then?" is pretty obvious. Alec is clearly not liking the idea that this random werewolf might know about warlocks, and in particular, his Warlock boyfriend.

Next... ooh boy... Alec basically snaps and in the next few paragraphs accuses Magnus of wanting to flirt with others which... is not a good look on ya honey 😕. These lines are the ones that get him accused of being biphobic... but is he really? I'm gonna talk about that in part 2.

So, in the first paragraph, where Alec makes the comments about Jordan, I find his choice of words pretty... interesting, seeing as 'messy-haired', 'broad-shouldered' and 'chiseled-good-looks' are all used to describe Alec in the series. Not sure if its relevant, but definitely interesting.

And in the next one, where Alec says, "or there are plenty of pretty girls here, since apparently your taste goes both ways. Is there anything you aren't into?" The 'apparently' makes me curious. In rsom, Alec mentions that he's only recently heard of the term bisexual, and there's plenty of time between rsom and cofa, so Alec should be absolutely sure of atleast the basic meaning of bisexuality. But I'm pretty sure it's just inconsistency on cc's part, since if rsom didn't exist, this book would be the first time Alec learns about Magnus’s bisexuality. (Which is obvious when you look at the scene after Magnus reveals that Camille is his girlfriend.) And as for the second sentence, I feel like it's a fallback to earlier in the book when Magnus says (I'm just gonna write the dialogue from memory), "I've dated men, women, warlocks, faeries, vampires, werewolves and even a djinn or two." Here, Alec is angry, and he takes the knowledge that Magnus has dated a variety of people and once again, lashes out.

Looking at all of it together, Alec’s insecurities are definitely a factor in all of this. We know Alec has pretty low self esteem in tmi, and he keeps having irrational thoughts about someone else grabbing Magnus’s attention, like in the trsom scene I've posted above. And he ends up taking out his insecurities on Magnus.

Was it wrong of Alec to say all those things to Magnus? Yes, absolutely. But looking back through all his scenes in cofa, it's easy to see how he could've fallen into the pit trap of emotions.

And before anyone says "but it wasn't addressed in the later books", it was, in CoLS. I’ve hit the image limit, so I'm just gonna type it out -

"[Magnus] said it would be better if he didn’t come. Apparently him and the Seelie Queen have some kind of history."

Isabelle raised her eyebrows.

"Not that kind of history," Alec said irritably. "Some kind of feud. Though," he added, half under his breath, "the way he got around before me, I wouldn't be surprised."

"Alec!" Isabelle dropped back to talk to her brother....

So, there. Alec makes yet another slutshaming comment, Isabelle overhears and is clearly not happy about it, and it's clearly implied that she talks to Alec about it. And Alec doesn't make any more slutshaming comments since then. Boy now knows what he did was wrong, and makes sure not to repeat it again.

Although, I do wish we had more than this. I wish we had more of Magnus and Alec talking about this argument, heck, even about all their arguments and the reasons they broke up, but you can't get everything you want, apparently :(

And now onto the next part...

PART 2 - IS ALEC BIPHOBIC?

The short answer, uh, no, not really.

The long answer.... would be complicated.

So, back in the day, when this discourse was at an all time high, I remember reading a bisexual person's essay about this topic, and they said that this comment from Alec - "or there are plenty of pretty girls here, since apparently your taste goes both ways. Is there anything you aren't into?" - would be a biphobic microagression.

According to Google, a microagression is "a statement, action, or incident regarded as an instance of indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group such as a racial or ethnic minority".

And in Alec's case, IF his words were biphobic, they were completely unintentional. They were microagressive. Which is... still bad, of course, but it's more complicated than that.

If you look back on Alec's supposedly biphobic statements, they're more about Magnus’s hypersexuality and promiscuity than anything else. Yes, even the line i mentioned like two paragraphs ago. At first glance it may seem like a direct attack on Magnus’s sexuality, but think over the explanation I gave for the line and it will make sense. And a lot of people know that the whole 'bi people fuck around a lot and are cheaters' thing is a stereotype.

Now, it may seem like I'm going off topic here, but bear with me. I couple of days ago, I watched this video by chance. (Tw for the aids crisis and lots of biphobia, not from the narrator, if you wanna watch the video). Basically, back in the 1980s, bisexual men were scapegoated for spreading aids to the straight community and were vilified by popular media as being promiscuous scepters who would cheat on their wives with gay men and then give aids to their wives. (Yikes 😬). And since bisexuality was practically unheard of before all this (several bisexual activists have stated that all this shit, though unfortunate, pulled bisexuality out of the closet), it's safe to assume that this is how those stereotypes came to be - through 1980s propaganda.

But living with this propaganda is... a very limiting experience. The people who leaned and unlearned and fought against this propaganda are mostly US Americans who grew up with it, either the actual propaganda itself or passed down by their parents. But like I said, it's a very limiting experience. US is but one country out of many, and even for those living in the USA there's a chance that they grew up in a very hush-hush environment. People who grew up hearing all these stereotypes will see it as biphobia, while people who didn't - like Alec, and me, and several other people will not. A lot of people grow up with absolutely no knowledge of the queer community, and chances are that they'll be incredibly confused when a stereotype is pointed out to them, and they often get no more explanation than 'this is a harmful stereotype'. Queer experiences aren't the same for everyone, and while I respect the people who see this as biphobia, they should recognize that there are many people who won't see it that way.

I have seen bisexual people say that Alec's words were biphobic, and I've also seen bisexual people say that they weren't. Thus, there is no clear consensus about whether or not Alec was being biphobic. And like I said earlier, Alec grew up far, far away from mundane anti-queer bigotry. He was essentially a clean slate when it came to knowledge of eer microagressions of any kind, because microagressions and stereotypes are often incredibly specific, don't have anything to do with a person's race/sexuality/gender, etc. and will make zero sense unless you know the history behind them. To Magnus, who lived through the anti-bisexual scapegoating, the words would've definitely stung, but Alec didn't even know the implications he would be making with this words! Of course, the impact is greater than intention, and I imagine Magnus would sit Alec down one day and talk about all this history with him.

And idk if I can even blame cc cause the history of bisexual men is RARELY ever talked about, atleast on the internet.

Also, this scene in cofa is the only instance where he can be interpreted to be biphobic. Nowhere else in all of tmi, and even tec, do we see Alec express hatred or disgust or microagression towards bisexual people. If this was seen in a repeating pattern from Alec, one could argue that he's biphobic... but he isn't. Some might point to some of his internal thoughts in trsom to argue otherwise, but I believe that actions are superior than thoughts.

There's also the thing about unlearning prejudices, but in Alec's case there was hardly anything to be unlearned. The only prejudices he did pick up on were against himself, through vague homophobic comments from Robert.

P.S if you've read this far, I am legally entitled to compensation for thinking of cofa Alec for 48 hours. Put your favorite Alec moments in my askbox cause I wanna focus on his good side now. 😎

But yeah, the main thing here is that Alec has grown from his mistakes, apologized, and hasn't repeated this behavior at all.

And lastly, I just wanted to add - I don't think all this was unintentional on the author's part. She's grown up with the us American queer community, and has mentioned that she has bisexual friends, who have no doubt faced prejudices because of these stereotypes. I think she was trying to condemn making such statements, but a lot of people don't read between the lines and end up misinterpreting it and make both the character and her to be biphobic.

So... TLDR; was what Alec said biphobic? Maybe. It depends on who you're talking to. Is Alec, as a person, biphobic? Nope. Not at all. 😌

I'm gonna be honest, as far as Aku, evil overlord dictator of an empire that's dedicated to wiping out most if not all of humanity, you write him too mushy. He's supposed to be a sociopath, from what we see in the show, but you have him being shipped with like, a dozen people. You write him waaayy too nice. That being said, I suppose if you didn't, you would have very limited interaction with people, and you've written out "development" for him, but the point still stands that he's way too roman

ooc ★ Before I get onto my response, I’d like to thank you for having the audacity to send this. I feel there’s this unhelpful idea in the rpc that people have to agree with everything you post; and to say you disagree with someone’s interpretation is often met with ferocious resistance. But when I reblog memes of this nature asking for opinions, I want the good and the bad. I AM always looking to improve, and to not take criticism when I so freely dish it would be hypocritical of me, I guess. ( For lack of a better word, right off the top of my head. )

I COULD put this under a cut, but I feel this is important enough to just let it sit out in the open. It’s something I’ve been thinking about a while.

That said, two things for you.

Firstly, I LOVE writing violence! In fact, I’d go so far as to say it’s in my top two favorite things to write, right beside slow-burn romance ( and particularly one-sided yearning ). However, while I used to jump at every opportunity to write violence, I can admit I’ve since slowed down a bit. Not only because I’ve gotten progressively less and less people coming to Aku trying to pick a fight with him, but also because I’ve come to feel that fight threads without a purpose to further the plot are repetitive and somewhat boring. It tends to be a lot of the same-old same-old; repetitive actions, repetitive imagery. And yes, while this is a significant piece of his character in the show, and I love exploring it even further and particularly pushing the bounds of his abilities, if it doesn’t serve a purpose in the greater scheme of a plot or an arc then... Why waste your time with it? And frankly this goes for all repetitive actions, like gratuitous sex and slice-of-life. If it doesn’t serve a purpose to write, such as say to kill an important enemy or fight a significant battle or even to maim a loved one when he’s not himself and bring down the angst hammer, then? Why.

Secondly, despite not wanting to write violence just for the sake of violence... I can admit I want some conflict over here. But that’s just the thing. In Aku’s main verse he’s samurai-less. I did this simply because the NUMEROUS Jack blogs there used to be have since become inactive, and if my initial intention with Aku’s blog almost from the very start was for him to kill a Jack and switch over to my Bad End universe, I can’t very well have Aku always worried about a ghostly, intangible threat that he can’t confront. And of all the Jack’s on this hellsite, of which I’ve written with and followed more than a few along the way, I can only name ONE which is still active. ( And another which followed me today, on that note, but they don’t have a rules nor an about page, so. )  ...But that first Jack I mentioned, @sonxflight, we don’t really write anymore. Nowadays Dari’s been more focused on fluff / romance threads, and I’ve been more interested in developing Aku’s mental health. Aku isn’t gonna go out of his way to confront a Jack that he views as not being his problem. Dari’s Jack isn’t the one from my Aku’s universe. Dari and I just kinda tag each other in dash memes and comment on one another’s posts once in a while; and that’s about the extent I see action from a Jack nowadays.

I would LOVE some more conflict on this blog! But I’m not going out of my way to find it if it doesn’t particularly serve to further my current plot— which is Aku’s eventual ascension to Godhood at the end of this year. And that’s another thing, if Aku himself doesn’t stand to gain anything from talking to someone, inciting a conflict, or being a dick to somebody, he’s pretty much going to keep his distance. He finds most people to be a waste of his time; and this is nothing against other RPers whom I love seeing on dash! Because lord knows I’d love to push him to interact with folks. But if Aku himself looks down his nose at most people and finds them not only boring but also boorishly stupid, then there’s not much else for it. He sees others that come to him for money, freedom, and other boons in exchange for their services as nothing more than cattle; and frequently this is how his meetings with new people go. Meeting others out in the field is the best way to get a truly organic and not copy-and-pasted interaction out of him. And even then, there’s still numerous factors which would predicate how such an encounter might go.

Because there’s not too much conflict on this blog for now, I’ve decided to take greater liberties with exploring shipping and platonic relationships also. But for those of you who have followed me for a while, who have seen me mention on more than one occasion that slice-of-life threads aren’t really my schtick, I can understand why you might be a bit confused. Well, allow me to explain: the reason I’ve chosen to place greater emphasis on these kinds of relationships lately is to preclude a little RP / character bleed mishap which happened recently and which impacted my enjoyment when writing as him and even just simply being on this blog. And by ‘recently’ I mean slowly, over a period of the past several months.

Aku’s entire arc with Rick demonstrated to both of us that he’s in an incredibly bad kind of headspace in regards to healthy relationships on this blog. In his universe with Rick, basically all his ties are a result of his relationship with Rick. Bill ( wildgcd, whose blog has since been deleted ) and Ashi ( @tigersteeth ) are both inactive, and have been for months +. They’re the only ones with whom Aku has a healthy relationship that isn’t directly tied to Rick in that universe, and as a result he tends to rely quite heavily on Rick for his social needs. So when Rick left him too, Aku’s abandonment issues reared their head. Unhelpfully, mun has a problem with abandonment amongst a slew of emotional / psychological problems quite similar in nature to the one’s Aku suffers from— albeit with a fun little mortal twist. 🤗 So I knew I needed to take action so I could comfortably be on his blog in the inevitability that Stephanie goes on hiatus again. Which is why I’m trying to focus a bit more on building more platonic and romantic relationships besides the ones with Rick and co. that way Aku has more people with whom to spend his time when Rick is away.

Furthermore, now that Jack’s out of the picture regardless of verse, Aku’s allowed himself to focus more on making friendships and forming attachments just in general. One of the reasons he tended not to do such before is because he felt that Jack would kill whomever he felt close to in an effort to get to him. In fact, he even shouted at Rick for daring to mention that he and Jack could possibly work together to build a future which would be brighter and better for everyone; because he felt certain that Rick would wind up being targeted by Jack to get to Aku.

He’s started going to therapy, also, to address long-held mistaken beliefs in himself, too. Beliefs which interfered with the relationships he had tried to foster with others; it was enough to frustrate him, when he let himself acknowledge such, and he knew he needed to sit down and talk with someone professionally if he didn’t exactly have friends around per se with whom he could talk. Also, I personally believe he chose not to do such before, because his very existence was hinged on destroying Jack so he could conquer the universe in peace without meeting resistance. While he knew he was unhappy and knew furthermore that he had some problems that needed addressing— and had even made a thin attempt to talk about such with himself in show canon as you recall—  ultimately his mental well-being took second banana to making sure Jack was DEAD.

The therapy, coupled with his own slow internal journey, some perspective which was afforded to him during Rick’s absence, and some 4th wall Discord conversations has lent him valuable insight on the way he functions—and how Nightmare works too. Who, in many ways is just himself but with unchecked mental delusions and mistaken beliefs that had grown unchecked. He saw what had happened to Nightmare mentally, and didn’t want such a fate for himself. Hence the therapy and greater, braver attempts to let himself be closer to others.

Finally in the case of Bill and Nightmare... both of them take place in different universes, of course. Universes which in themselves were split just after the break up between Aku and Rick. Aku is still thoroughly alone in those universes, because again. He doesn't have Rick and all the people who were brought into his life as a result of his relationship with him. He’s at that point in his immortal life where he’d like to try his courage and test out the things he’d discovered about himself in therapy and in his personal self-explorations, and see about developing a relationship with someone with a fresh perspective with his recent failure as Rick’s partner in mind. Which is why he’s so amicable with them and trying to get to know them better. He wants to see what a healthy relationship, platonic or otherwise, developed on his own might be like.

However. I WILL acknowledge that Aku trying to make friends with people is ooc. It’s ALSO ooc for Aku to try fucking / romancing someone. There, I said it.

But you know why that is? It’s because that facet of his character was never explored in canon, even in all the comics, games, and the addition of the 5th season in 2017. So I suppose you could say that if I were to play him absolutely true to his canon material he’d only ever be a fucking mauling, mutilating, destroying, force of nature. Which yes, he still is despite my writing him how I do with a greater emphasis here lately on developing relationships with other characters. I ask you: isn’t the whole point of RP to develop dynamics and explore facets of a character that canon neglected? I could do fight threads all day, boy; but please ask yourself: how much would that really serve to further my interpretation and understanding of him, if at that point I’m just rehashing canon fights with a fresh coat of paint and different enemies? Whereas platonic and romantic relationships are a thoroughly headcanon and character-development heavy area for a character like Aku, who hasn’t had a single friendship or romantic relationship in his canon media.

And if you’d like cliff notes, rp examples of him being fucking EVIL, and links to evil headcanons I have you’re more than welcome to send a second ask asking for said information. But I think I’ve already given you plenty to think about and read, unless you’re some kind of masochist and want to torture yourself more with reading my self-absorbed and self-assured opinion. Thanks for making it this far, here’s your consolation prize.

TL;DR: Canon already gives me fights for days, boy. And while I thoroughly enjoy writing fight threads, they tend to be repetitive and exhausting if they’re not serving a purpose in a plot arc. Whereas things like interpersonal relationships for a character like Aku, who did not see such development in his canon media, is full of things to explore. And ultimately that’s what RP is about, exploring facets of a character which canon doesn’t explore for you. Once again, thank you for asking, and I hope this answers your question. I can provide examples for everything cited above, as well as fight threads and evil moments abound if you’d like. Furthermore, if there’s anything I do in RP which confuses you or which you feel is ooc, I invite you to jump in my askbox again with further questions. Once again asking my cymbalta dreams to chill the fuck out

Last night's was good? But bad because about things most would call bad? But weirdly I was very happy in the dream.

I know posting abt it on here isn't anything anyone is interested but I've spent this entire day in physical pain and/or in tears so I'm gonna take advantage of the ability to use my blog for whatever and vent post abt it.

I think I've typed enough the auto cut new thing should kick in so ppl can scroll past this. Im also gonna tw tag the fuck out of it but if I miss a tag someone needs let me know.

Technically, I think most ppl would categorize the dream as a zombie plot? Like. Literally me, a good portion of the OFMD cast including Con (mentioning him specifically because he was involved with another couple of details in this), one of my ex best friends from middle school, and some other randos were dead. Truly dead. Kept in morgue coolers in this hotel we weren't allowed to leave. It had been retrofit to be more of a house than hotel, to keep us happy and busy.

Because we woke up, every morning. No job to go to or anything, because whatever we touched or breathed on could kill and pass whatever hit us onto someone still living. So there was nothing to do but fuck around this hotel, quite literally fighting or fucking or setting shit on fire just for fun. Caretakers in hazmat and fire protection gear would come in, clean up our messes, and leave each day. Didn't so much as speak to us or even look at us.

The fucking did at one point include Con and me, which was really fucking nice if I may say without getting too TMI! But odd, because we both kept commenting on how cold we both were (because dead lmao) and that rigor mortis setting in each night and then leaving each morning meant certain body parts just didn't move as easily as before, like an arm could get stuck reaching for something. And both of us definitely wanted to like. Address why no one was actually trying to help us and was just letting all of us turn into this band of bored as fuck zombies forever, but who was there to ask? So we just had a weepy moment in the snuggling after because I think it clicked for both of us then that we'd best find ways to keep each other and everyone happy, because this wasn't going to end in any way any time soon.

Which leads to how all of us actually got back to sleep each night. You had to essentially rekill yourself. Any method, and a lot of times we took turns shooting each other to make it easier (one scene had Con and I as the last two awake at one point, so we literally had to manage to shoot each other point blank at the same time, because none of knew what might happen to us if we didn't find a way to 'sleep' but there was the implication it was worse than the current reality we were in.) That scene honestly made me cry when I woke up. Con was very kind about it even as we were both like hey this is getting kind of fucked up! Maybe someone should actually see about curing this or just finding a way to keep us dead? Because the in between thing is weird and unsettling!

Towards the end I got in trouble for handing something directly to a caretaker who unbeknownst to me had a rip in their glove. I think they achieved the only way out from the infection, because their coworkers literally yanked out axes and chopped them to bits. Then they didn't have a way to get up again, like the rest of us.

But aside from those moments of holy shit this situation is fucked up beyond belief, everyone was happy. Carefree levels of happy, so long as they weren't thinking abt the situation itself or missing family and friends. Running thru the halls like kids, fucking around and being destructive in ways most adults wouldn't ever be day to day, but we did because what did it matter? The weird fucks in suits would come in and fix it all and we could fuck it up again the next day.

We had really lovely talks and read through books together from a limited library. No one needed to eat, but we talked abt previous fave foods. We wondered why it was so quiet outside and if it was because of us being there that the town seemed abandoned, or if something else had gone on. We didn't even know what city or country we were in, for that matter.

There was one perfect scene tho that was just me and some of the rest helping each other into our little morgue slider things (whatever the fuck those are called again lmaoo) at night. Because it felt so loving and normal despite the situation. People told me good night and meant it, I meant it back, and we assuaged worries of what if we didn't wake back up in the morning this time? Would that be better or worse?

The last bit of it I remember was Con putting a blanket over me before rolling me into my drawer for the night. I felt very cared for, and couldn't help but think how it was one of the few times I hadn't wanted for overall human connection and community care. Then thought wow it's fucked up it took all of being some sort of zombie to achieve that.

I woke up after that and had a good cry over it. Part of why I keep crying today I think. I'm just really grateful everyone in it was nice to me, in the end. Since it felt really fucking unsettling real.

Chris Marker: San Soleil (Sunless) 1983

Two weeks ago I was put into a new group for a new task on Primary Research; to select a documentary film from the links which our lecture, Samantha sent us on email. After selecting a documentary film our groups will have to debate about it on group chat through Instagram and write about it in our blogs. The group I had to be put in were Emma, Valerie and Amy. Since we have been paired up we were allowed to watch the film together or independently before we could have a discussion about. I did not mind being put into groups, however I was not able to watch the film amongst my class peers as much I prefer doing it independently due to the fact I have assignments to catch up to as I lack behind time management.

Meanwhile I had a look through and watched some of the videos to see of which one would be useful and educative until I chose San Soleil (Sunless), directed by Chris Marker in 1983 filmed at various locations from Japan to Iceland to Africa which includes elements of global studies through society, beliefs, history, environment, culture and arts. It, also happens to be one of Samantha’s favourite films. I thought this would be something to do because I feel like I should learn more history and geography properly which I never learnt from school; and I am inspired between the cultural influence of Africa and Japan. Then I began to watch it; not properly because I left it on while I was doing a bit of research of the film and telling the others on group chat about it. Also I had work to catch up before the end of my deadline. They allowed me to watch the documentary independently, whereas others had the same problem as me. The next week after on an evening night I tried to watch the film properly but I was falling asleep due to being preoccupied with my other assignments throughout the week. Moving on to the week of the presence I am in now I managed to watch the film last night while I was working on my other assignment for Core Projects: FMP (Final Major Project), I did not see everything on screen but I have been listening through my earphones of what the narrator was saying. I learnt that the film was 105 minutes which was two hours long, thankfully it did not put me asleep again like last week. There were a few things I remember from the documentary film: a cat temple, people on the train, the narrator mentioning about young girls attempting to be married early, deliveries on the boat deck, Japanese horror films, a reference from Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, two different festivals between Africa and Japan; and the narrator amongst her children in the camera from the beginning and end.

Today I have just set up two of my posts so I can try to write about the film and the fun activity I had this morning until I had a meeting with one of my study skills tutor, Caroline, in the afternoon. We, both had a recap on the brief amongst the video until I learnt that I am suppose to select a scene from the film and make statement about it. The questions are I am suppose answer were:

How was the community, society, culture and subculture were represented; was it positive or negative?

Was it ethical?

Did the Filmmaker have a relationship to this community already?

Does it appear they did enough “fieldwork” in advance of it being made?

How is the film written about and edited?

What year it made and how does this perhaps show how the social politics or even human rights has changed?

I knew I was suppose to write a statement about it but I was not sure if I should answer those questions from which Samantha sent us on email. It is because I have my own way of answering them different and I would be easier to explain. However, there is also the three questions from a book, How to write about Contemporary Art which was shown on the key text of the brief. The three questions are:

What is it? (What does it look like? How is it made? What happened?)

What might the work mean? (How does the form or event carry meaning?)

Why does this matter to the world at large? (What, finally, does this artwork or experience contribute—if anything—to the world? Or, to put it bluntly: so what?)

However I did mentioned of when the film was made, who directed it, where was it set and what the documentary was about. I will see if I can try to answer the questions from what Samantha sent us. If not I would rather stick to the other one which helped me to answer properly.

There was one of the scenes I liked was a cat temple in Tokyo, Japan. The temple was called Gotokuji Temple it looked very interesting as it had to be the first time to see a temple of cats. While it was being filmed it shows an old couple leaving items to their idols when they were praying until I learnt that the narrator mentioned about someone’s cat had gone missing and nobody knows of what has happened to it. Could the pet have been stolen, run away or dead? Since the visual imagery showed up after I saw the couple praying it reminded me of Hindu temples that truly have a way of praying and believing in many gods, whereas Japan is different. Mostly cats statures in temples. There are some rumours that tell the legends about the origins of cat charm. During the ancient period from Edo, an anachronistic lord from Hikone, passed by a temple and spotted a cat as it was summoning him to come inside. Then followed it as he went into the temple until a huge thunderstorm struck and the lord thanked the cat for saving his life instead of being left outside to be struck by thunder. He starting collecting many funds to restore and declare the temple as his own by family name for generations and named it, Gotokuji. As years passed on, people would come by to the temple to leave figurines of Maneki-neko as a sign for their of gratitude while praying. Also Maneki-neko was considered an infamous model; and mascot from Hikone City, Hiko-nyan. As a matter of fact cats are Japan’s populated and favourite animals, therefore I am into cats as much as people too. However I do have two cats from home; one is a Nebelung and the other is a Bombay, their names are Storm and Sheba.

Overall, listening through the documentary as I worked around late in the evening there were some things I was not aware of which relates to Samantha’s questions, despite of myself finding difficult to answer them about the community, society, culture and subculture being positive or negative between the areas from Africa and Japan, the filmmaker having a good relationship to the communities and everything. All I know is that the film was very ethical and well done in a way that has been filmed in many countries from around the mid-80s (1983) as we are learning some facts of philosophy, cultural arts and other minority backgrounds so we want the world to decolonise to show equal views through race, gender, religion and sexuality. What could have been better next time if I could just set up a timetable to do a 45 minutes studies on Contextual Studies, then move on to the other assignment for Core Projects after a 15 minute break so I can improve my time management which I usually do before the pandemic happened.

Like do u hate felicity bc she took laurels spot? Like cmon the chemistry between Stephen and KATIE just did not exist. It was bad. Like I love laurel, she was so much better apart. Also I'm sorry but Emily's acting is 100000x better than Katie's, katie is a brick. I'm not TRYNA hate but I just wanna understand why you're so hateful towards one female character? Why not just support both?

For starters, I don’t think Felicity “took Laurel’s spot.” The only character that exists to take Laurel’s spot is “Dinah Drake” and I have problems with that for reasons I’ve listed time and time again (and especially, most recently in a post that probably hasn’t escaped the first page of my blog). 

As for Felicity, there are a laundry list of reasons why I stopped enjoying the character. She’s a “reset to factory default settings” kind of character in that she’s one-dimensional and isn’t allowed to grow or evolve beyond what and who we’ve known her to be (which I think is a result of the writers thinking they’ve struck gold with her and don’t need to develop her). For a character to be that way, and get the level of attention/focus/screentime that she pulls week to week, it’s frustrating. There have been multiple instances where the writers have given her a great story, and chosen to do nothing with it, for example, when Felicity was attacked by Darhk and ended up in a wheelchair, the writers didn’t use it to propel her down an interesting, and character-building arc, instead they had a magical chip that restored her ability to walk and she was made to be completely fine — restored to factory default settings. I also find her to lack empathy, and empathy is a quality I admire in characters of fiction and people in real life, so it’s hard to relate to someone who refuses to put themselves in someone else’s shoes to understand their actions and their choices and somehow makes it all about themselves instead (eg. the entire situation with Samantha Clayton, and Oliver’s son). I think her storyline in Season 3 ruined her for me, specifically in her treatment of Ray. I will never understand how she could have played with his feelings like that and talked to Oliver as though she would drop Ray like a bag of shit the second he was willing to give in to his feelings for her (which she kind of ended up doing anyway). And to refuse telling Ray that she doesn’t love him, and has feelings for Oliver, but to still rock up at his place of business and be like, “hey can I borrow a jet?” And ya’ll can say “yeah but it was to save Thea” but she was like “lol let Thea die, it’s not worth it, Oliver.” Her entire romantic relationship with Oliver was forced and rushed and the feelings were fabricated for plot-purposes at the beginning of Season 3, and so it was impossible for me to enjoy them as a couple (and yes, it’s important to bring up because Felicity was basically just a love interest for Season 3 and Season 4). I also hate the fact that we’ve seen no fucking long-term consequences and/or guilt for her nuking Havenrock and for her losing Billy Malone. Ten thousand innocent lives are dead because of her, and she was guilt-ridden for a single scene in Season 5. And we had to see another shot of Emily Bett Rickards “trying to cry” over losing Billy, but we never got the time to invest in that relationship, and she never seems to acknowledge it in a real, human way but instead can use it as a way to justify being pushed into Helix? Again, it ties back to her being a “reset to default factory settings.” And most importantly, I hate that she never has to earn anything on the show — she never had to earn her job at Palmer Tech, or earn becoming CEO, she never had to earn being the main love interest of the show and that development is literally non-existent, she never had to earn being somewhat competent in the field to take on the League of Assassins or the Ghosts, or whoever else she’s fought, and in a show about earning your role as a hero and facing a crucible to become something else, she’s literally done shit all to get to where she’s been. And look, I was a huge fan of her in the first season. But I remember slowly getting sick of it in S2 because her dynamic, and her role was growing very stale. I know people like to think it’s because I’m a Laurel fan, and a Lauriver fan, but it’s not true. The reason I don’t like Felicity Smoak, in a nutshell, is because I fundamentally disagree with how she is written and until the writing changes to fix the issues that I have, there’s no way I can “support her.” But that’s the beauty of the world — we don’t all share the same opinion, and you coming into my inbox trying to say “support both” whilst not-so-subtly dragging Katie Cassidy... it’s not incentive for me to agree. 

I hope that answered the first part of your question. 

On the topic of terrible acting, my initial problem with Emily Bett Rickards was the way she spoke her lines — it often felt like she was reading off a script, and they were very monotonous and almost robotic. Moments where it felt a little better was when she was able to have some personality behind it, and/or some passion. And then it felt like she was improving (specifically the “keep fighting” scene in S2). But it’s still how she delivers the lines, and so I’m not a big fan of it. And beyond that, I don’t think she’s cut out to do serious and dramatic scenes that involve extreme emotions, like being distraught. As funny of a meme the “No, Ray, Olibur” thing is, it comes from a place of how awful the acting and the writing was in that scene to the point where it’s comical. But she’s great at comedy, and she’s great at being the comedic relief. I just don’t think she’s mastered the art of doing serious drama. I mean, did you see the episode of Legends where they tried to make her a superhero? Anyway, you opened the floor on discussing acting ability and so I thought I’d share as well :) 

Now, onto the chemistry part of the question. Chemistry is subjective. You don’t see it for Laurel and Oliver -- that’s fine! Frankly, when I look at Oliver and Felicity, it’s kind of awkward. She looks way too young for him, or he looks way too old for her, or maybe it’s both. And the truth is, I don’t see romantic chemistry between them. I see that it’s written in the script for them to kiss and say “I love you”, and that’s how it feels. Scripted. Forced. I like the kind of chemistry that isn’t one-dimensional. I like that Laurel and Oliver can fight, and scream and have conflict and drama because they’re mature about it and it feels real and it feels like there’s all this history between them that bubbles up to the surface during those heated moments. I like that when they are together, romantically, it feels and looks like they belong and all that history has culminated in something beautiful and logical. I like that when they’re friends, you see a gentle side to them and a platform that was established and that will hold through anything. I don’t get that with Felicity and Oliver (mostly because the writing for them never warranted the relationship in the first place, but also because of the romantic chemistry lacking). But as I said, it’s subjective. You think Katie is a brick when she acts? Fine. I think Emily has very limited range and a lack of experience that shows in close to every episode. Each to their own. 

(I do want to say, though, that despite not being a fan of one’s acting ability, I have nothing against Emily Bett Rickards personally and actively do my part to make sure people from the LL don’t direct hate towards her on Twitter, which is more that I can say for the Olicity fandom that targets Katie)

Now, the reason I don’t and can’t support both is because I’m not willing to overlook serious flaws and spend my time on my blog being fake. If you go all the way back through my blog, you’ll see that I used to be a fan of both and I used to adore Felicity Smoak. I don’t anymore (for some of the reasons I mentioned above). Also, thank you in advance! I'm known for being really observant when it comes to others though I'm apparently kinda oblivious in romance matters that directly concern me. I have a strong sense of judgment and I can never seem to turn a blind eye to people that I know I can help.

[2/?] I don’t like having to depend on others, and I definitely hate making people worry about me…Which is a bit unfortunate because I can’t be stopped once I get started on something. People think I overwork myself sometimes, but I know my limits. I like making dumb jokes and just getting people to laugh or smile in general. I love teasing people that I’m comfortable with and I’m always trying to look out for my loved ones by making sure that they’re properly taking care of themselves.

[3/?] I’m not a very easy person to fool, but I can respect privacy and space. Though I’m always willing to lend an ear to anyone who needs one. With that being said, I’m really patient when it comes to others and I guess at the end of the day I really am my own worst critic (haha). Oh, I also love animals (especially dogs).

I have a habit of singing/humming when I’m casually working but I’ll be dead silent if I’m super focused. I rarely ever yell and even when I do I somehow seem to go unnoticed, it’s a bit ridiculous and exasperating.

[5/?] I’ve got a really good sense when it comes to cooking since I can usually just wing it with ingredients and still have everything turn out well; though I’d never risk this with anything else. On the topic of cooking, I really love food! Especially when it’s free. I don’t think I’ve ever turned down a sample of free food before in my life. I’m not too good with spicy foods but I’m willing to try anything at least once. I hate when people waste good food.

Nakajima Atsushi (Bungou Stray Dogs): The poor guy catches your attention the first time you see him. He had spent most of his life abused in an orphanage and was kicked out due to his ability to turn into a tiger. Dazai and Kunikida picked him up and now, he’s working for the ADA. Strange twist of destiny, you think. The president pairs him up with you so you can show him the ropes and introduce him to the ways of investigating. Atsushi is stiff and awkward when you first meet him but after a few jokes, he’s able to smile and tease back. At the end of the first day, you’re able to deduce the things that make him uncomfortable and the topics he’d like to steer away from. He’s looking forward to working with you, and you admit you are as well.

During investigations, he’s able to get to know you - he politely teases you when a bug passes by and questions you when you take a side street instead of the main street to get to places. He reacts the same way you do to any high-pitched noise, except he tends to panic than brush it off. In the office, he seldom approaches you since he doesn’t want to interrupt your humming, but he doesn’t hesitate to remind you to head home at the end of the day. He usually stays long enough to go for food with you and he also shares your dislike for wasted food. He grew up in an orphanage so he relishes in every bite. Unfortunately, you pay most of the time but he promises to pay you back whenever possible.

On your days off, Atsushi usually finds you at home, either chilling or experimenting with different ingredients. He doesn’t have any hobbies of his own so he enjoys spending time with you and helping you out with anything - he insists, even if you refuse. He wants to be of use no matter what because he never wants to feel useless. You have no choice but to relent and the two of you begin sharing the same hobbies and interests as he learns more about you.

Neither of you realize the underlying love hidden in your relationship for a long time. The jokes between you remain teasing and somewhat flirtatious - no one notices until Naomi points it out. There isn’t an evening when you don’t cook a meal for the two of you. No one else could match the partnership you have with him - even Kunikida wishes Dazai could be like that. Atsushi is first to realize the feelings he has for you and when he asks you if you feel the same way, you don’t have an answer right away. It takes a while for it to sink in but when you start dropping pickup lines on him, he knows you feel the same way.

HyakuyaYuuichirou (Owari no Seraph): Your first impression ofYuu likely wouldn’t be the best, given how reckless he can get in situationsand seeing him not taking heed of orders or listening might even becomeexasperating. UnFortunately for you, you end up getting paired with Yuu onmultiple occasions, leading to the both of you having to work together. Atfirst this partnership is rather awkward, with Yuu mostly keeping to himselfand not speaking to you. His recklessness will lead Yuu to rushing into fightsagainst enemies, resulting in you having to follow him. How observant you areis an advantage since you’d be able to take notice of your surroundings,including where your enemies are and how many of them there are. Trying toconvey this information to Yuu would be a challenge however, even if you yell.He’s either too focused on the task at hand or simply doesn’t take notice ofyou until afterwards, which can get exasperating. If Yuu gets overwhelmed or hehappens to mess up and is open to getting attacked, that’s a good opportunityfor you to intervene, giving him an helping hand. Yuu might not appreciate yourhelp in the moment, claiming to be able to take enemies on by himself, butafter this happens a few more times because of his own recklessness, he’llbegrudgingly thank you. A few more times of getting partnered with you, Yuuwill certainly take notice of you trying to inform him of enemies approachingand will listen to you and thank you afterwards.

Yuu isn’t exactly the most friendliest of people towardsstrangers or acquaintances but he cares deeply about his friends, and afterbeing put into Shinoa Squad and counting him as members of his family, Yuu willopen up some more. This would extend to you too since after all those missionshe went on with you, he’d feel as if he knows you as more than just an acquaintance.He’ll greet you when he sees you around and ask you about the missions you getsent on. Casual conversation becomes a thing and this certainly won’t gounnoticed by Shinoa. Seeing the two of you interacting, Shinoa will consideryou one of Yuu’s friends and involve you in her shenanigans, especially afterlearning that you like to tease and joke around. Even if you get involved byaccident in one of Shinoa’s pranks, if it looks like you had fun, she’ll besure to invite you to join her in more of her pranks, especially when Yuu isthe victim. This makes you unofficially a part of their squad and the more youhang around them, the more they’ll get to know you and vice versa. Yuu willcertainly get to see different sides of you that he never bothered to noticewhen he was working with you.

Amidst all the chaos that ends up happening, Yuu might besurprised by how focused you get. He has his own problems he needs to findsolutions for and seeing you concentrating so hard on helping the army fuelshis motivation to find his own answers. As much as he knows that you’rereliable, like how Shinoa will check in on him, he’ll do the same for you, notwanting you to work too much to the point of damaging your body. Even if youreassure him that you’re fine and know when to stop, that won’t stop Yuu fromchecking up on you. After all, you’re friends now and that means you’re familyto him. It’d surprise Yuu if youcheck up on him though, since he didn’t expect you to do so. It makes himhappy, though he’d wave your concern off, saying he’s fine. The others, inparticular Shinoa and Mitsuba, find it funny how you two seem so alike and willcertainly not hesitate to tease the two of you about it, leading to Yuu arguingwith them.

It’s not like he minds such comparisons since with howmuch of a hard worker you are, it feels more like a compliment to Yuu. However,hearing about such similarities leads Yuu to taking notice of how little youlike to depend on others and how you keep things to yourself so that otherpeople won’t worry.
