its just some generic fantasy thing but the blurb is like. latinx transmasc nonbinary queer main character xyz is gonna whateverthefuck and like. i cant even define what annoys me about books like that but they DO

and you can say its the tokenism and thats for sure partly true but for something like this its probably just the result of a queer artist who wants their specific identity in the book they write which is obviously good and fine

HOWEVER. and this is integral. it still just annoys me so much. its shallow sure but lots of generic tiktok romances are shallow also and those dont piss me off (probably because im not looking at them). like maybe this book is even half decent!! but anything it could possibly be doing is overshadowed by the frustrating sort of postury keyword-matching going on in the characters' identities. its like wearing a big hat that says "read this book not for the story ill tell but because the main character has an identity you might share!" and idk man i think its just incredibly reductive

does it matter at all? nay. i can just not read it. and in the era of ai ""art""" it has a leg up in quality from shit that wasnt even written by a person. however. call me a pretentious asshole because dude i hate you. make your book say something other than "the mc has an identity"

portal fantasy about some humans. It was a NaNoWriMo project in 2016 and now it's all I think about. Beela is the mc, small and scared and wasn't supposed to be autistic, but everyone who's read it says they are. Nona is the best friend, Beela's foil. Santo is my sweet boy, he's the one who starts with the magic. Vadeen doesn't believe it until he can do it, then it's all fun and games. Maisie's got anger issues and you know what? I love angry women. They're so much fun and they deserve more

Wysteria and Pants:

Getting ready to query this one! Just needs a few more chapters. A book about queer joy and also small witchcraft. Wysteria is the mc, she's definitely adhd, but I dont' think she knows. Her magic is very small, but it's enough. Ariel is her boyfriend and they're both ace because all I wanted when I started this book was to prove that ace people can be joyous and loved. Pants is her familiar. He's a turtle and honestly, no one can figure out if he's magic or not.

Xie is the Architect and You are Nothing:

Look, it was NaNo and I was trans and the book came out as a victorian style ramble about identity except you can tell I was listening to a lot of Magnus Archives and Welcome to Nightvale because things get weird.

Trans Pirates:

Last year's NaNo and it doen't have a title yet. Sorry, titles are hard. It does have an enby named Riix who's full of emotion and has no skill to process it. Clementine is trans femme and wants to do nice things like knit and sew, but she got stuck actually caring about her pirate/ smuggler crew so that doesn't happen very much

aa i totally get what youre saying and i really wish i had like. a truly good answer at least movies-wise. i feel like there arent rly a lot of like Actually Canon monster/human romance movies that truly have that spirit of fun to them.

in terms of like approachable newby monster-romance media in general though.. this is probably Basic but ive been really enjoying the webcomic suitor armor recently. its not perfect but the romantic element and the way character relationships are handled is very genuinely sweet and if youre like me (ie grew up on the hokiest of ya high fantasy media) itll easily burrow its way into your heart.

if you havent seen disneys gargoyles series yet... well thats harder to access now that disney plus is a thing. it used to be all uploaded for free on youtube! still if u have plus or ur down to pirate i rly cant recommend it enough. its a fun, fantastical, very bingeable cartoon series with as much interesting lore as convoluted magical shenanigans and some real sweet slowburn monstery romance.

oh! hellboy! the original hellboy movie is really good! i have a real lingering soft spot for comic book based movies from the days pre-mcu and big budget grimdark superhero shows that are like visually well done and obviously have a lot of care put into them, but still maintain the special brand of weirdness that i think was kinda unique to the medium.

if youre willing to put up with my book recs for a sec, im a big big fan of the house in the cerulean sea, and a long way to a small angry planet. neither are strictly speaking romance-centred (because i dont rly vibe with that in books) but i think they both def fall into the category of fun monster/human romancey content. theyre also just a couple of my favs in terms of like, stories that focus a lot on character and interpersonal connections. the romances present in them feel really good and organic to me because theyre sorta just another facet of that theme.

my thoughts on The Mermaid, the Witch and the Sea (spoiler free):

queer piracy baby!!!!!

the book painted a rather terrifying truth about piracy. i dont think you’d be fantasying about a life at the high see after this book

the moral code amongst the ‘good’ pirates was very much ‘I can excuse murder, sexual assaults, thievery and slavery, but I draw the line on animal cruelty’

there were parts of the book that caught me off guard and i thought they were very cleverly implemented!!!!

the world feels very small. there are a few islands, and we’re suppose to be convinced that it is the so-called The Known World?

the magical elements didn’t feel like it belonged in this world. the introduction to magic came in late into book and the grounded reality of the setting was already established

the way the dialogue was written, it sometimes, felt like it’s the same person whose talking. e.g. the author would add. a. fullstop. after. a. word. in a character’s dialogue to denotes that a character was frustrated and they’re emphasising each of their word, but every character did this, and it lost its uniqueness

the character that surprised me the most was Rake. i grew to care about him and florian so much!

1. What are your characters theme songs if any?

My characters don’t have theme songs or songs at all attached to them, it’s not something I do.

2. What inspired your WIP?

My love of the ocean, and of mythology, a bit of @quilloftheclouds ‘s wip OSS, and idk I just really wanted to write a sea creature ocean pirate-y WIP.

3. Who is your personal favourite OC? Why?

Ughhhhh I don’t know!! This is such a hard one for me and the answer changes all the time. I love Lorelai cause there’s so much to her, but Adrian is my loveable not a dumbass dumbass, and Morgan is awesome and full of ‘tude.

Yknow what? My *new* fav OC, maybe not absolute favourite but definitely my new favourite, is Nicodemus Galanis!! He’s pompous and smug and fancy but has a secret soft spot and a secret of his own and he gets a wonderful complex story arc and I enjoy his backstory and just ugh. I love him.

4. What’s your favourite line of dialogue from your WIP?

“Next time, don’t disturb a witch’s things.” Cause it’s such a dramatic moment in context but she just suddenly gets a sarcastic sugar coated voice and it’s just such a great scene and this line is my fav.

5. When did you start writing?

In general? Elementary school. Seriously? High school. This WIP? Like idk a month or two ago??

6. What is your favourite book?

Dont have one, can’t choose. Too indecisive and I don’t read enough these days. #cop out answer

Lorelai, easily.

Oof. Uh. I’m pretty proud that I basically finished a whole novel (Scarlet Secrets) at 17years old and I’m proud that despite everything I keep writing. I keep coming back to it, always, eventually. No matter what. And I enjoy my flowery descriptions :)

Oh yeah. Yup. First that comes to mind is the first several chapters of a zombie apocalypse story where all of the main characters were based on me and my friends. I lost interest, and all of those friends either drifted out of my life or betrayed me so like. I didn’t really want to write them anymore.

7. What time of day or night do you write?

Literally whenever I have the motivation to do it. So any and all times or never.

8. What is your fav genre of fiction and why?

Fantasy!!!!! Realistic fiction is also pretty good. I just love dragons and mermaids and mythical creatures and magic and just all of it YES.

Romance novels. I need more to the story than just pining. Romance plus other things is great but not nothing but romance.

Ahhhh. I think Lorelai and Nico would *adore* a trip together to tour either Greece or Rome. Adrian would pick the Caribbean, Morgan is a toughie though. Maybe Australia? And honestly Miles would just choose to go back and visit his mom.

6. How do your OCs feel about animals? Do they have or want any pets?

Morgan and Adrian originally lived with and around marine animals and ate fish. Adrian is fascinated by land animals and Morgan doesn’t care for them. Neither would ever keep a pet. Miles loves animals and would LOVE to have a big dog as a pet. Lorelai? .... She’s a bit too busy, yknow, being a sea witch, hunting monsters, plotting revenge.. she’s neutral on all fronts here.

EVIL QUEENS JOB IN SEASON 6 AND 7

Well season 6 was special bc we had Evil Queen in fact free and doing what she wanted. Regina took her out with the serum, the serum takes the feelings people dont want the others to see. As we saw Rumple wanted take out his feelings for Belle. Also theres the comatose theory, where Evil is Emmas ID, so shes Emmas feelings and deep desires. And we know Regina has feelings for Emma, and Emma has feelings for Regina. And did you remember Snow took a part of Emma and put this in someone else?

This is about Emmas sexuality, put the part of Emma in someone means that someone was blamed for what Emma is and feels. This happens a lot in lgbt people’s life, their parents say to them what they feel is not real that the other person is influencing them, and they end believing in this. So if Emmas feelings for someone was putted in that person, means Emma was blaming someone. Regina.

And see Lily parallels Regina, and also looks like her:

And so the person was considered a villian, dont matter how hard this person tried to fight the bad things happened to her. Its Reginas story, right?

She became a villian even if she tried to scape this.

And so we saw Snow take a part of Regina out, the same way she did to Emma. (ALSO KEEP IN MIND REGINA WAS LOSING CONTROL OF EVIL BC HOOK CAME BACK. And the finale was about Henry trying to destroy magic bc it was tearing apart his parents. So Evil wanted Hook out bc Emma and Regina want be together).

So we have Regina without Evil, what means Emma doesnt blame Regina for her feelings anymore. 

But the feelings were free and without control trying to get what Emma and Regina want. Emma and Regina needed to face Evil, what means face things they dont want face.

One of the first things Evil does is to give David the coin, this makes part of her plan to expose Hook. The coin lead us to know Hook killed David father but Hook doesnt face any consequence. She tries hard to expose Hook, she tells Henry that the pirate will ruin everything. And that he kept the sicssors what can take away what make Emma special. Can you believe Evil cared more about Emma and Henry than Hook would ever? 

While this Evil tells Emma she need let the stories plays out and that make the savior jobs end with Emma dont being happy, what is true. Shes not happy and she doesnt want to be the savior, she never wanted. 

Evil also wanted to be accepted by Henry, this means Emma and Regina want Henry to accept them with all, the things they never talked about being gay and the bad things they did, and also its about them accepting their feelings.

Evil was very crazy, she felt abandoned, and wanted hard to make Hook fall, but this doenst work so she goes to Gold, she back to abuse, GoldQueen represents how a person who was abused keep holding this. Evil tries make Regina to do the wrong thing, as I said shes the feelings, and she was being rejected for so long, so of course she did a lot of wrong things.

So she put Emma and Regina together in the mirror, together forever, right? Evil really wanted them together, but its not the time, first Emma need find balance, its not the right time, thats why we had Evil putting Henry to chose, kill the dragon (balance) or let his mothers die, in this Henry doesnt represents himself, he represents Emmas mind having to decide, let what she feels for Regina come out or find balance, she not ready. And Henry choose dont lose the balance. And Evil says hes very soft, bc she thinks things must work in her time with any cust, shes the feelings, and the feelings dont want wait.

Did I say Evil is Emmas ID? So she controls the genie. Also she says its all about her, its always about her, what Emmas agree (and we all too :P). She makes Emmas wish came true, dont be the savior, of course Emma doesnt know what be the savior really means, its not about to save everyone, our give happy endings to everyone, its just about save yourself and admit your real feelings for your family. 

In the first curse Henry said to Emma her family needed her, the only people she saved in the end was Regina and Henry. When she broke the curse, she doesnt wanted save anyone in the curse, she just wanted to save Henry but she didnt know how to save him, she just says she loves him and kiss him, as I said admit your real feelings. When Regina breaks the second curse with Henry, she does the same, she just says she loves him and so kiss him, she doesnt wanted to break the curse, its not about to save everyone, just about save the ones you love. So Emma need to be the savior but not the savior she thinks, thats the point, she need to be capable to save herself and the ones she loves. So the wish sent her to a place where she was not more the savior, what means she couldnt save herself or the ones she loves. She is submissive, of course, there was not Evil Queen there, if EQ is her ID, this means Emma couldnt acess her feelings and desires. In mind we have the ID(feelings and desires) and the Superego(super moral) in a fight, the feelings want to out and the moral want to keep them trapped. The Charmings are the Superego, they were the thing keeping Emmas feelings away, thats why they are the ones who banished EQ.

And so Regina wish to be sent to the same place as Emma, Regina is one of the people Emma loves, the other is Henry, and Regina parallels Henry. Emma made a wish in her birthday in the season 1, so Henry showed up, now she did a new wish, and so Regina showed up, this goes more deep, Henry said “you are the savior, your family needs you”, and Regina said “you are the savior, your family needs you”. A perfect parallel what show us whos Emmas family, Regina and Henry. I know people can say Hook said Emmas family needed her in season 3b too, yeah, he did, but he couldnt break the memory spell, and in the end who broke the curse was Emmas family, Regina and Henry. See, thats so wow. 

This goes more deep, Regina needed to became the Queen, she needs became the queen bc she needs to wake up Emma. Emma was in a curse, as Henry in season 1 and Emma in season 3b with the memory spell. She was in some kind of mind sleep. So Regina kills the Charmings, what means the superego (the moral what controls Emmas mind) falls. And so Regina end being in danger bc wish Henry would kill her, thats when Emma wakes. See the person she loves in danger makes her wake, so she breaks the curse, she can acess her feelings and desires bc Regina was there and in danger. Emma is the savior of her life, she can save herself and the ones she loves. Emma didnt said she loves Regina, but she needs to say? Actions talk lauder than words. Its more hard to Emma to admit what she feels for Regina, thats why she always puts Henry in the middle. But wish Henry was not real, she just uses him as an excuse but her feelings shows up in form of magic. 

So, they come back outing the closet, so subtle, right? And we had wish Robin, who Regina realizes is not the person she really wants. And so she find out Emma will marry and this breaks her heart, and you know what? In the same ep her and Evil fight. Fight your feelings literally. 

And so we find out why Regina hate herself bc the closet (why magic had to be so literal?), the closet means the conservative creation, of course you would hate yourself too, if you were created for not to be what you are. And we saw Regina in the flashs enter in the cupids realm, what looks like the bisexual flag. And this ends with her accepting Evil and chosing love over hate. And Henry accept her too. XD 

Evil goes back to the wishland(we need an Evil Queen there bc we need Emmas ID working) with wish Robin, Evils jobs keep going, she is very good in this, she takes wish Robin away, he was one of the obstacles Emma and Regina needed to defeat, he was one of the people who stop them from come home in wishland.

And in the finale we saw Evil doesnt care for him, all the realms were being destroyed(the finale showed all the fantasy is in Emmas mind and was linked to her belief), he died in some place out there but she just cared about Henry and Emma, and she did sacrifice herself so Regina could go back to them. 

Dont you love Evil Queen? She is the best. 

Now we have the wish Evil, and she had her magic stolen, what means Emma cant acess her feelings again, this is very interesting bc we saw Emma in the ep 7x2, and she looked sick, sad and with problems with her magic. She wanted to be with Henry but Hook doesnt let her. So Emma give us the wish Hook back, remember Hook is one of the things Emma needed to defeat to left wishland but now he can change for good, and we had wish Evil sending him in a mission, in this mission he finds a thing more important than revenge, she doesnt know but she did put him in the right way, the way we need to Emma be free, she cant does so much bc she is without her magic, so little things, little steps. 

But her job keep going.
