and like it or not oom DOES have a role in their relationship, it's uhhh what happens when you pretend to be your twin sister to break up with her gf for her and end up falling in love instead while still pretending to be your twin sister 😭 it's why oom tells them to let go of their current relationship and build something new, something away from the lies that ai and may's first relationship was founded on.

if you're mad at her for this then you might as well be mad at ai for not telling her sister to fuck off earlier and at may for not telling ai to tell her sister to fuck off, or for not walking away when ai didn't. but fundamentally that's not who these characters are and that's been known from like. episode 2

The Robot Revolution Will Be Televised

If headlines were anything to go by, pre-screened reviews of the latest episode of Doctor Who, “The Robot Revolution,” were mixed. The ending was referred to as “controversial.” My gut reaction was worry that it would be yet another lore change. I felt like the Babadook mum screaming, “Why can’t you just be normal?” There were a couple of moments that I felt could be divisive. Cat fanciers might have balked at the untimely demise of Lucy from number 7’s cat. Then there was the moment when our lovable robot pal, Scoot, vacuums up Alan at his most zygotic. But Lucy from number 7’s cat was quite literally RTD doing the opposite of saving the cat to let you know these robots are bad business. And the sperm and egg line is so camp that it’s going to be one of those “my girlfriend is a paving slab instances.” But we know the real reason this episode might spark controversy.

Was that the first cannon mention of sperm in Doctor Who? I certainly can’t recall another instance of the word in the show’s nearly 62 years of existence. The new Davies era has added quite a few new words to Doctor Who’s lexicon. We now have cosplay, sperm, and even incel. That’s two new additions in a single episode! Bravo! Jokes aside, it’s the incels who may or may not be mad about this episode. I’ve learned to turn down the volume of those types of people years ago. I often refer to it as background static because that’s what it is. The truth is, the only issue I have with Belinda Chandra saying “It’s the planet of the incels,” is that it’s a bit on the nose. But this episode is so camp that I’m not even upset.

The Chibnall era had the unfortunate knock-on effect on people’s perception of a woman Doctor. Because the show wasn’t very good, some people (idiots) blamed it on Jodie Whittaker’s gender. Another knock-on effect was how it made so any legitimate criticism of the era also had to first combat claims of sexism. It was a messy time in the fandom. But when the show is good and people are still complaining, then what is the complaint? No episode of Doctor Who is perfect, but this might be one of those times where if you didn’t like the episode, it’s probably because you’re an incel. You’d have to make one hell of an argument because, baby, I had fun!

My impression of Russell T Davies has always been that he’s a man who appreciates when Doctor Who is a little camp. He even refers to the Robots as “camp” on Doctor Who Unleashed. Part of Doctor Who’s charm is that it exists in a hyper-reality where Doctor Who is possible. This week, he leaned heavily on the retro-futurism of ‘50s B-movies, citing 1955’s “This Island Earth” as one of his main inspirations. Fans of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 will be well-acquainted with This Island Earth, as it’s the film they riff in the MST3K movie. It’s a gloriously corny bit of science fiction from Universal in their post-horror era. The AI Generator’s throne room could easily have existed on Metaluna.

However, the usage of retro-futurism here is also part of a growing trend in sci-fi to embrace vintage tech. In the Alien franchise, we’ve seen the return of the chonky mechanical keyboards of the Nostromo. The computers in Star Wars still look like absolute dogshit. And. I. Am. Here. For. It. It’s nice to see the Doctor using computer panels that resemble something the Second Doctor would have utterly destroyed. I’m reminded of “World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls,” when they took the look of the Cybermen from “The Tenth Planet,” and updated their texture and materials enough to make them seem realistic. Things don’t always need to look how you expect them to, they can look how they need to look. The Doctor doesn’t need to pull up a Tony Stark-type HUD of holographic buttons for me to believe he’s on an alien planet.

Grounding this fantastic wonderworld in a bit of much-needed reality is Varada Sethu as Belinda Chandra. Belinda is a nurse who works hard for the NHS. She lives off of the least spoiled items in a community fridge. She’s a no-nonsense type who treats her work with the utmost sincerity. For the most part, nobody needs to tell us that Belinda takes her job seriously because it’s evident through her actions. Belinda doesn’t just sleep soundly; she sleeps on her stomach over her covers, presumably where she collapsed in exhaustion the instant she got home. This is precisely the sort of character work I’ve been missing from RTD since he returned. His work crafting the Tyler household was so strong that you felt as though you knew Jackie and Rose. I hope he keeps developing Belinda in this fashion.

We first meet Belinda as a teenager, talking to her dickweed of a boyfriend, Alan Budd. It’s clear from the outset that Alan doesn’t respect or even particularly like Belinda. He wants to possess and control her. He names a star after her but needs to associate it with her marital status by adding “Miss” at the beginning of her name. He critiques how she tears open her gift. He also steals the world’s most awkward and unearned kiss from her. In part, Alan is a knob and she knows it.

I found it a bit odd that Belinda would keep the star certificate all of these years later. But despite the irksome “Miss,” or Alan’s name on the diploma, it is still a bit cool to have a star named after you. Alan, as it would turn out, was the least significant part of that equation. In the words of Bilbo Baggins, “Why not keep it?” The episode wastes no time bringing the Robots into Belinda’s life. They drop in, break down some walls, terrify some nurses, and vaporise Lucy from number 7’s cat. RIP kitty. But things don’t happen so fast as to deny us a brief moment with the enigmatic and fourth-wall-breaking Mrs Flood. She’s up to her usual spooky shit. Very little new to report there. The question one must ask, however, is whether Belinda lives near where Ruby lived, or does Mrs Flood get about?

The Doctor tries to save Belinda, but as he’s chasing her, both she and the Doctor experience a “schwup,” in the space-time continuum, causing them to arrive at their destination at different points in time. Their destination? Missbelindachandra One is a planet whose name I would have read as gibberish the first few times in a book but is simply Belinda’s name as it appears on the star certificate, sans spacing, plus one. The Robots are the merciless hatchetmen of an imbicilic AI Generator. This is one of those rare moments where Doctor Who referencing current events doesn’t feel painfully dated, as the AI debate still rages on. You’ll be happy to know that anything you ever read on my blog is always 100% me. Fuck AI.

The Doctor has ingratiated himself into society on Missbelindachandra One. He holds the prestigious title of historian, which, when you consider megalomanics and their attitude toward accurate history must have been torture to the Doctor. Can you imagine trying to spin the AI Generator’s status as a bronze Torbjorn main as something cool? The Doctor truly is selfless. I’d have been stealing shit from the office every day. Call it quiet quitting, I call it fighting the power. My wibbly wobbly timey wimey lunch breaks would redefine the meaning of thirty minutes. Though, I do find the timing all to be a bit off. The Doctor says it took him a long time to rise to the role of Historian, but he’d been there for 6 months before Sasha 55 discovered him. Though, as we’ve learned from the Eleventh Doctor, any time sitting still is interminable. In an episode so fucky, it’s ironic that that’s the only timeline that confuses me.

Spoilers for the 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme action sci-fi movie “Timecop,” but this episode reminded me of Timecop. Particularly, the moment when the evil Senator MacComb touches himself from another timeline, and the two melt into a puddle. It left an impression on 11-year-old me as it was one more way, like quicksand, which could totally kill me. Previously on Doctor Who, two of the same object or person co-existing has a plethora of effects, especially when those two items or people touch. Rose Tyler holds baby Rose Tyler, and the walls of reality weaken. Amy Pond touches her younger self, and nothing happens. Two of the same sonic screwdriver throw sparks. These diplomas throw us into a trippy Troughtonesque psychedelia where people age in and out of form like a Chris Cunningham video. It's a stunning bit of film making, and that shit reminded me of Timecop. 

Much of this episode reminded me of other stories. We have echoes of “The Girl in the Fireplace,” with a society of automatons (and people) taking a name too literally. My sister and I are watching through modern Who at the moment, and we found weird parallels within “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship.” The villainous Solomon even spurred my sister into saying “Incels make the best villains.” Too true, Rachelle. Too true. But the story which I thought of the most was the Seventh Doctor adventure, “Paradise Towers.” You have a dystopian future where society is thrown into chaos by an overzealous artificial intelligence. My friend Gerry and I both commented that the moment Manny showed up, we both thought of Pex. The big evil robot faces even compliment each other. I also thought of Futurama’s Femputer, which is really secretly a Fembot, which is itself a reference to The Wizard of Oz.

A man behind a curtain is exactly the issue. Alan Budd is our AI Generator. After Belinda inadvertently got Alan kidnapped ten years in the past (thanks to the schwup), he became a sadistic ruler over Missbelindachandrakind. However, due to a fault in programming, he runs on an 8-part cycle, rendering him and his robot thugs unable to hear every ninth word. Because of this, a rebellion was able to form against the AI Generator. But he too is fighting his own rebellion against himself, the Alan part of him that exists within every ninth moment yearns for death. He’s a pathetic figure, really. He’s an idiot’s idea of power. A very apt archetype for today’s leadership. I like to think it was a conscious decision on the effects department’s behalf to make one of his arms way bigger than the other. Alan is clearly working out at Onan’s Gym. It really is the cherry on top of an already stunning design.

Davies’ season openers are usually airier romps. Something to dip our toes back into the world of Doctor Who. Aspects reminded me of “Smith and Jones,” when the Judoon force the Doctor and his new companion into meeting through kidnapping. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” while initially praised as a return in tone to the Star Wars franchise, has since been reappraised (perhaps unfairly) as a rehash of the original film. Similar criticisms have been lobbied toward RTD, which accuse him of recycling older concepts from Doctor Who. It comes with the territory when a writer returns to a franchise. You’re bound to see some of the same themes. But Doctor Who does this a lot. “The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood” is basically a rehash of “The Silurians,” with a dash of “Frontios” thrown in for good measure. “Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel” is a reimagining of the origins of the Cybermen, swapping the mirrored “Tenth Planet” of Mondas for an alternate reality Earth. We’re in season two of this new version of the show, expect to see more “remixing” of the classics. You’re old now.

One thing which I hoped Davies would do is chill out a bit. Stop trying so hard and just let loose a little. This feels like that. When Rose Noble gave her speech about being non-binary in “The Star Beast,” I complained that it felt a bit clunky. It had that awkward David Lynch is your uncle telling transphobes to fix their hearts or die energy to it. It comes out a bit weird, but his heart is in the right place. But with this story, it felt more natural. Sure, lines like “You’ve taken coercive control and made it complete control of the whole planet,” are a bit on the nose, but as I said earlier, the camp tone affords those moments. This all feels very deliberate and considered.

Much of the script feels thoughtful, which in turn proves to be thought-provoking. One aspect to science fiction I’ve always wondered about was whether “humans” in things like Star Wars are like us. Belinda asks a question that you seldom hear come up in sci-fi, and that is whether or not Missbelindachandrakind share a similar physiology to humans. I love that not only does Davies ask the question, but he even takes the time to discuss the differences for no reason other than flavour. It’s nice to see Davies having fun with the ideas he’s bringing up. This tells me he’s engaging with his own concepts and developing them in a way that says, “Thank god we have more writers this year.” He’s not just in love with his ideas, he’s exploring them.

Some fans will have been disappointed that the skeletal ray gun effect from the trailers wasn’t the result of Daleks. I even saw fan theories that Alan’s golden form was the new look for Omega. This is exactly why I stay away from fan speculation as it’s never accurate. However, one clarification from the trailer for which I was grateful was the origin of the Doctor’s cream coloured costume. While the annoying side of the internet was busy melting down over the Doctor’s blue kilt, I was quietly hating on the cream coloured costume that he wears throughout this episode. Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor Who costumes have been rather varied, but generally keep to a few themes. We see a recurrence of tartan patterns, overcoats, and tight fitting shirts. His costume here is the only one from the trailer which felt wrong for the Doctor. So I am very pleased that there was a story reason he was dressed so drab.

Ncuti and Varada have believable chemistry. I like that it’s not so cut and dry. The Doctor is trying to be flashy and cryptic, whereas Belinda is reserved and direct. She doesn’t appreciate the Doctor’s showing off, which is a quality I have always admired in companions. If you read my article about older companions, you’ll know I appreciate their less-than-starry-eyed approach to the Doctor. Donna Noble, Evelyn Smythe, Ian and Barbara, Tegan; none had time for the Doctor’s shit. Belinda is in good company, and I like that she holds the Doctor to a higher standard. Belinda has a good head on her shoulders. She won’t put her skills as a nurse to waste. And she certainly won’t let someone die in her name. She’s also brave in a way I admire. She’s ready to sacrifice herself to save lives.

One aspect of the Doctor and Belinda’s relationship that I’m less into is something RTD seems to be doing more of recently. Instances where two characters experience a lifetime over a short period to insta-bond them is a weak story device. Whatever method they employ to fast-forward character bonding steals real moments of discovery between the actors and the audience. There’s showing, and there’s telling, and this was telling. It doesn’t feel earned, it feels hollow. It’s the weakest element of this episode and I wish they would stop doing this type of shit. What’s the hurry? Why does the Doctor need to state how much he cares about and knows Belinda now? What purpose does that serve other than to reveal too much of the Doctor’s interiority? Shouldn’t we, as an audience, trust the Doctor’s judgment in people by this point? It feels cheap because it is cheap.

Despite the episode’s daft energy, real stakes are established beyond a cartoonish cat skeleton disbursing into the ether. The Doctor’s friend Sasha 55 is unceremoniously cut down by Robots moments after discussing her future travels with the Doctor. The way she was talking to the Doctor like “Take me to the stars,” she may as well have painted a target on her back. It’s the Doctor Who equivalent of a policeman one day from retirement. For their sake, we pretend to be shocked when they die. But we knew. We knew. That isn’t to say that losing Sasha 55 wasn’t an effective moment- quite the opposite. Evelyn Miller gives an effective performance in the short time she’s onscreen. I know people give Ncuti grief for crying too easily, but here it’s totally appropriate. We’re reminded of other would-be companions who didn’t live to see the day. Lynda with a Y. Rita from “The God Complex.” Astrid Peth. And now Sasha 55. RIP Sasha 55. I liked you better than “Orphan 55.”

Watching Belinda walk toward her fate of marrying the AI Generator and becoming incased in gold gave me flashes of Han Solo on his way to the carbonite freezing chamber. The orange lighting pushing through the foggy clouds cast a brilliant glow on Varada’s face, convincing me that she was always meant to be a part of the Star Wars universe. This was her “Empire Strikes Back” moment for sure. The strength in the moment comes from Belinda’s choice not to hide. The Doctor and Manny were working out a plan that sounded foolhardy at best. Anyone within earshot would know it was a doomed mission. Belinda alerts the Robots to her location. She goes willingly. There’s a selflessness to her actions that screams Doctor Who companion far more than the Doctor witnessing her life could ever achieve. Her brand of self-sacrifice is heartbreaking to see, and I wonder if it's completely healthy. I hope they explore that.

The same sombre tone follows us into the ending of the story. When the Doctor fails to bring Belinda back to her own time, we’re shown images of a wrecked earth floating in space. Something or someone has removed or destroyed the earth, and it’s legitimately creepy. It’s giving “The Stolen Earth,” and I’m here for it, again. Though the “Planet of the Apes” style half Statue of Liberty must have been a massive blow to the Weeping Angels. That was like one of their tallest soldiers. I joke, but I also don’t joke. I had to sit through “The Angels Take Manhattan,” and now you’re telling me it meant nothing? It makes you ask the wrong questions in the moment. Questions like “Isn’t that thing alive?” “Is it dead now?” And “Why is it always the top of the statue? Why not the feet?”

I mentioned previously that I might try and write these reviews along with a corresponding Saturday morning cartoon. However, I believe it was my adherence to this bit that delayed this article. After I had watched “The Robot Revolution,” I felt a surge of positive energy about Doctor Who and I really just wanted to sit in silence for a bit. I usually take that as a good sign after watching something. When I sit there quietly absorbing everything I’ve just seen. But when I hit play on that episode of Spider-Woman, the moment ended. So I don’t want to do that anymore. It seemed a fun idea at the time, but I would rather just abide in the time and space allotted to me by Doctor Who. A time which might not always be there. A space so fantastic that Doctor Who can exist within it. Here’s to season three.

im noticing a disconnect. people are lamenting that they want people to read books more (as an indie author i agree read mine) but then i go onto youtube and see video after video mocking and making fun of books they clearly dont like for even existing.

im not talking about ai books or booktoks nonreading trend, im talking about books that were written and published being sneered at for having predictable and problematic elements. I cant get over the thumbnails ive seen where a book clearly billed as a gothic romance being derided for having a teacher student dynamic (gods forbid! it should have incest next time like the old gothic novels of yore that are cemented into the literary consciousness) or for fucks sake taking a clearly fetish romance book and splaying the "YOU SPAYED MY MATE" line as if its a condemnation of literary value when its just fucking wank material, get over it??

and i know you may be like but these books are bad and written bad and you fucking know what? i dont care. dunking on them is for groups of likeminded friends. and i know a huge problem is youtubes algorithim is designed for farming negativity, positive love for books get less viewed partially because they dont get pushed!

the point is. how the fuck is bashing books you deem problematically beneath you going to foster a love of reading. how is that going to foster authors who are bold in what they want to write even if you find it skeevy or wrong or bad. how are we going to encourage a healthy relationship to books of all kinds in a wide variety by condemning them?

and its like. some negative reviews ive clicked into have been nuanced and thoughtful. even of my favorite books! those ones rarely lean into the awful thumbnail culture youtube has. the point is not to never negatively review something, the point is to pull back from the slavering feast of enjoying bashing someones work for having offkilter tropes. am i judging a book by its cover? certainly. thats how thumbnails are supposed to work in this landscape.

i want to listen to more book reviewers but i cant get over the culture youtube has fostered. yes the publishing industry is very fucked right now, i decided to go the way i did with my books because of it. yes omg a book like that can be published....and you can too!!!!!!! alright? fuck. shit.

a book is so hard to finish writing, man. there are books far more worth this level of scrutiny, often in the nonfiction section like fucks sake doormat mom just released a book and its harrowing to read for all the wrong reasons. that feels like itd be influential of toxic people to remain toxic. because thats directly what its targeting, not some fictional wank material based off hormonal caste systems and also no one remembers what gothic actually means anymore.

Latest AO3 scrape into AI database

Please read this if you're an AO3 user with public, not archive-locked works. This is information on the latest known instance of someone taking AO3 works to build datasets on which to train AI and the ongoing process to get them removed. I don't really make posts adressing people, but I am furious about my work being used and I know some of my mutuals don't have their fics archive-locked so I hope I can at least get the information to some people.

Earlier this month (April) a, to my understanding, rp fanworks website named PaperDemon.com got word that a user of an AI dataset website, HuggingFace, had scraped its contents, as well as those of a bunch of other websites among which AO3 is included, where they can be freely downloaded to train generative AI models. For AO3 specifically, the user themselves reports that all public works with IDs ranging from 1 to 63,200,000 have been scraped.

As of April 25 and per the updating Paper Demon publication, 2 of 8 affected sites have gotten their content removed and the rest have achieved temporary disabling (supposedly data is visible but not downloadable) pending a counter-notice from the scraper, who appears to be set on the aim of dismissing the request as unfounded. Furthermore, the AO3 dataset has already been downloaded 2,244 times in the last month. On earlier updates of the PD post they mentioned that the scraper agreed to remove, on an individual basis, the content of those who file a Copyright infringement report. So far there are about 150 reports against the AO3 dataset. The scraper also uploaded them to another website, but appears to have removed at least the PD ones, as well as to his personal website which the PD post doesn't even link for safety reasons. The platform HuggingFace has also been made aware of the situation (that's what got us the temporary disabling)

I have personally filed a Copyright infringement report using the helpful guide put together by the PD team and have emailed the scraper on the address listed there providing the title and URL of my work and requesting for it to be removed from the dataset.

I have one concern regarding the PD guide, though (disclaimer: this is coming from someone with a very limited knowledge on computers & digital information and my understanding of the majority of concepts is from 3h of internet searches + ms help page + messing around in my laptop) They rightly recommend to not publish the work URLs in the report and instead instruct to collect them in a spreadsheet in .cvs filetype. This, however, has a problem of personally-identifying metadata being stored "alongside" the file itself and it can be accessed. The MS Excel Inspector tool allows the removal of this type of data, but apparently only when it's shared through the MS account? For Google sheets there is a different problem, which is that you can't just make your spreadsheet in .csv filetype, you need to download it and the reupload it (if there is a way, it's not easily accessible; i looked at like 4 step-by-step guides and they all said to download) which again adds properties to the file that may contain personal information.

I was very sleep deprived and very close to giving up, because I do not wish to provide a person that's massively stealing content any information linked to my identity, but then I thought I could just send the info on the email body itself. It's not the best solution but I think it's better than the alternative.

I am beyond mad that this happened and will archive-lock my affected work as soon as I receive a response (or after enough days of silence, I guess, but I hope my report won't be ignored). Unfortunately I can't file a DMCA take-down notice, because it requires personal information which might be shared with the infringer if they file a counter-notice, but I have hope that, if everyone whose works were scraped files Copyright infringement reports, AO3's DMCA won't be dismissed.

I encourage anyone who has read this to also file a report to get their work(s) removed asap and, if anyone is more informed or knowledgeable on the topic, to please share any useful info you have. I might also email AO3 to inquire about the DMCA status later because the PD publication is understandably only really tracking theirs.

I honestly think there's a reason for having written Kamiki's character this way, I can sense it, if this isn't all. I ACTUALLY have a good idea how it's going to be and why it's like this. I jotted something down again...I keep talking about it because I feel like I can catch a glimpse of what they're going for in terms of what they want to do with this character. If you like him or the hikaai ship, it might give you hope~☺

I wrote this as a memo after having drawn that most recent comic with him and Ai, it may add to the context- my comics are based on my intepretations and analysis I have of them. It reflects those.

This character(Kamiki) seems to have a very lonely personality. Ai has a slightly avoidant temperament, so she endures things alone, handling everything herself without relying on others. But this character genuinely loves being around people. Because of that, he finds it difficult to let go of people, easily trusts others, and, even though he gets hurt, still has a desire to build connections. In some ways, this desire is even stronger than Ai's; Ai is content if she can express herself and form a meaningful relationship with one or two people she truly cherishes. However, Kamiki has always liked being around people. It’s not so much that he’s extroverted—he just seemed to enjoy being around others. Due to environmental issues, he developed some anxious tendencies, but if he had grown up naturally, true to his nature, it’s likely that he, not Ai, would have been the one to act affectionately. You can tell by his expressions—he looked so happy, so joyful, and delighted. When he looked at Ai, he seemed like he almost didn’t know what to do with himself because he was overjoyed. He naturally had a love for people(more than Ai in a way because Ai started out cynical- they are in reverse. Kamiki starts out having a natural affection towards people and ended up becoming heartless while Ai started out being wary, then she started to find genuine love. They both are "loving" but I'm talking about their nature of development), and all that affection ended up ultimately being directed at Ai, who had shown him love. He adored people like a puppy, even when he was kicked around, and wanted to keep loving them.

But after losing Ai in such a terrible way, his heart completely withered away. In fact, it feels like the Kamiki we knew died when Ai did.

He changed completely, becoming someone entirely different.

This character's past is filled with suffering, and he is extremely isolated, which feels very unnatural given his personality and appearance. It seems like he never met anyone other than Ai who treated him kindly and warmly, and it’s as if he had no real family relationships either. Normally, in a natural situation, this kind of isolation would be unlikely. It’s not like he had a bad personality, wasn’t attractive enough, lacked intelligence, or had no abilities—he was superior in many ways. Yet, strangely, his life is downright miserable. There are lives like that, but in his case, it seems as if his happiness has been deliberately designed to be absent without Ai.

If I were the writer crafting this character, that would be the main reason for having made him like this.

To ensure that this person, who was decent to this extent, ended up living solely for Ai, I would push his life to such extremes. Making him so blindly dependent on Ai that he couldn’t possibly live without her. The character would be created so that Ai becomes his entire world. He would be willing to give everything, sacrifice anything, live entirely for Ai. But even with all that said, Kamiki wasn’t inherently the kind of person who would go completely mad, even under the worst circumstances. His basic nature wasn’t like that; he wasn’t the type to harm others. He was genuinely gentle and sensitive by nature. Now, he has completely lost his mind, which means there must have been a critical external factor that pushed him over the edge.

That’s what the songs are describing.

In a way, that’s a source of hope, because without it, how could he possibly be saved? It would be hopeless!! What’s the point of trying to save a person so evil and corrupt to the brim? But Ai asked to save him, right? So, it has to be done. For a character like Kamiki, what matters most is Ai’s will, from a narrative standpoint. Even if he says, “I’m beyond hope; I’m a criminal and can’t be saved,” if Ai says, “No, you deserve help,” then that’s how it should go. In this story, who matters more? Ai or Kamiki? It’s Ai, right? Kamiki exists because of Ai, and he is a character who moves according to her presence. He’s simply a character created for Ai. I like it :) Writing stories like that and creating characters like that—it’s quite common in romance stories. Even if you don’t study it, you get the sense of it just by observing.

If I were the writer, I would feel sorry for this character. I had to create him this way for the story (for characters like Nino and Ryosuke, I’d feel sorry because they were designed as villains from the start, but for this character, I’d feel sorry for making his life like this and breaking him to pieces). I probably wrote it this way because it was necessary for the story.

If I were in charge, I’d make sure to give the character enough focus in the story. I would definitely do that.

And if it were up to me, I would never let this character end like this without achieving anything, even once. Even for a villain, if they’re a proper one, they should be given some spotlight. If not, well, then they aren’t really the final boss, are they? Look at what’s happening now. It just makes you think, “Wow… this guy has lost it,” and, “Oh, he wants to see Ai (but is this true love or obsession?)” That’s what you think when you take a step back and just look at it. The character has depth, but this just doesn’t feel satisfying. Looking at the authors’ capabilities, it’s not that they can’t write it properly; they’re just holding it back for now.

It’s really cruel, the way they handle this character. But... if my guess is right, this author’s way of handling characters may be quite similar to mine. I get it, so I end up talking a lot.

When someone creates something beautiful and then completely shatters it, leaving no trace of its original form, it’s not without a reason, as long as it doesn’t come from sadistic intent.

Well... if it turns out they’re doing this just because they lack space in the story, or the effort for proper development, then it'd explain them having given them those two really good songs out of pity. But I hope that's not it. Either way, you'd feel sorry for this character from a writer's standpoint. That'd be the case for me since for me, my characters are like my children or a part of me. You don't make them suffer for the sake of plain suffering...at least, it's not the way I work. I guess I can't say for the writer's behalf but I feel like they do care about their characters. It's inevitable to a degree, if you want to form a character's heart and mentality. You have to dive into them in order to create a complex state of mind. And Kamiki's probably pretty complex. We can't seem to get a clear idea of him, but it does seem like he'd be a lot more than just a flat piece of paper.

It’s almost like, just like in the song "Dead and Seek," he wished to see his deceased lover again, and then something crept into his eyes, shattering and twisting his personality. The songs seem to imply that. If he were just a normal character, I wouldn’t even bring this up. He was someone who practically didn’t have a single malicious bone in his body.

Ai also often misses the mark, but she doesn’t seem to have any intention of hurting others. Aqua and Ruby, on the other hand, have those aspects, and while they can be negative, those traits are also what make them more human in a way.

But with Ai and Kamiki, those traits were almost entirely absent. It’s like they were divine beings in a way. That's actually why I feel...it may be that his responsibility of what brought him to be this way could actually be less than what we may make out of it. If someone contaminates water and dirties it, the water is not at fault but the person is. This boy...started out to be so pure. I guess he should be held responsible, he should be punished for his wrongdoings if he's done so many horrible things, but he didn't start out like this and I'm not sure if he could have become this way while being himself. It really gets me. And that's honestly the only way I see Ai's wish bearing fruit.

hi i'm just joesara posting. that's all this is. like. man i love joesara. i can see them both romantically and platonically and either way their relationship is just. so beautifully devastating.

like here is sara, who is always doubting herself. and then joe, who's always countering her self-loathing. sara, who thinks she's too intense and hurts people too much. joe, who tells her that it isn't always a bad thing. sara who can't forgive herself for his death, who blames herself for pointing out that he wasn't the sage, who begged miley to let her switch places with him. and joe, who just tells her she's his best friend and he loves her when he's about to die. who tells everyone they're his friends, that he doesn't blame them.

joe, who carried around a dog keychain sara got him in his pocket for ages, who has accessories with bones on them, who tells sara he will stay loyal to her, "like a dog." who walked back to school after going on a date with her best friend, a date during which he just talked about her, because he knew she was scared of her stalker, who went to the fair with her in her minisode because of the same reason. this guy who sees her "flaws" as her strengths and supports her in whatever she decides to do.

i think the fact that she doesn't realize just how important he was to her until after he's gone is what gets me. he was always telling her she's his best friend, but it's not until she's talking to a robot version of him that she finally gets to reciprocate that, and i just know she'll always be carrying around so many "i wish i told him"s in her heart. but what i think is also so beautiful about her overcoming some of that grief and moving toward acceptance (at least in the emotion route) is that she realizes joe wouldn't blame her.

and i don't think it's entirely because of his AI. it's because she knew him.

sure, it's his AI that tells her that- but sara is well aware that isn't him. what she does finally realize in that moment, however, is that the real joe would forgive her. that he wouldn't be mad at her. that he doesn't blame her because that's not the kind of person he is. she forgives herself because of her own internal strength and memories. she forgives herself because he loved her no matter what.

and she keeps going. she lets go of the blame, but she doesn't lose those good memories she had with him. she lets what she learned from him strengthen her rather than hold her back. she internalizes the same things he always said to her and uses it to become better herself, to uplift the people around her who are still alive. she decides she's going to do everything she can to keep everyone alive because she doesn't want anyone to go through the same thing she did after losing joe. he's carrying her, he's carrying the narrative, long after he dies. spreading goodness.

they're eternally devoted to each other, even beyond the grave.

i Just played her minisode for myself (after watching it some time ago) and i was struck with all these thoughts about them once again. i think what especially gets me is the fact that i think sara did have a crush on him and just. didn't have enough time to sort through her own thoughts, or tell him. there are so many moments, both in her minisode and in the game, where i think it shines through. and that's just another "what-if?" she may not realize for a while, but will always be in the back of her head.

i don't think grief is nearly as... "simple," for lack of a better word, as it's kind of shown in your turn to die. i do love the portrayal of it for what the situation dictates, but if/when sara ends up getting out of the game, and all the survival instinct wanes and she has time to fully process it... i feel so bad for her. there's nothing that won't remind her of him. there's nothing she won't miss. there's nothing she won't wonder about. all of that, it just. god it all makes me so sad.

i don't like when people say "move on" when referring to grief. i think that implies leaving it behind, and if you ever really love something, i don't think it's possible to just put it down and leave it there. but i do hope it gets easier for her to carry it around with her the same way it briefly began to in the death game.

anyway. in the end, it really just comes down to a very simple tragedy; two best friends who would do anything for each other only having the option of doing nothing.

Now, I've already said all I can about her for now. Shes Ringmasters kid, keeps to herself and avoids the amab/masc presenting of the the circus for some unknown reason, favouring anyone afab/fem presenting. Though I should mention she's rather neutral with Andrew, Luke and Jack, just mostly tense and wary around them. Generally, she's a skittish person.

Her avoidance is pretty bad, especially around Daniel & Ray, she may even outright refuse to stay in a room alone with them. It's why when meeting Sebastion for the first time she fled not too long after - not only was he new and unfamiliar he was also amab. Yk. Who she avoids like a plague

There is reason to her madness, something that, like 99% of the things I yap about, will be talked about later down the line in the story.

In other news, Lin is thought to be in her early 20's - it's never confirmed by either herself or Ringmaster what her actual age is and none of the other cast seem to know. Except Kath, she knows but won't say as to not go against Lins wishes (I love those two </3) Mimi mayyy also know but she's 10 and ain't nobody allowed to harass her for an answer.

Lin is also Aro/Ace spec like Seb!! So there's something they could bond over? Their overwhelming urge to not be in a relationship?? I dunno, it would be too odd to pair Lin with someone given the person she is - and it'd be even odder for her to be in a straight relationship. She's more likely to be a lesbian than straight. But she harbours no desire to be involved with anyone romantically ^_^

And! Final funfact of the day/night/whatever it is: Lins favourite colour isssss yellow!! She doesn't like purple nearly as much as people assumes she does. Yellow is nicer in her opinion. :)

im assuming the asker was also autistic as autistics often misinterpret other autistics, the only thing I can see that may have made them mad is that when you said that you believe calculators have made people rely on them more instead of thinking of math with their heads, it could exclude those with a disability that already couldnt think math with their heads and as well as the fact many people with disabilities use ai to assist as without it, they struggle. So its a bit of a wider issue but I dont think you did anything wrong, it seems to be different ways of looking at the ai issue as well as looking at math as a whole. Is someone relying more on a calculator because they are lazy, or do they have dyscalculia, its tough to say but its not your fault for assuming they are nt and lazy. I would assume the same.

Through it is also true that there have been scientific studies done that show that autistic people tend to communicate better with eachother. Anyways, here’s the thing with that reasoning though - I’m talking about people in general. As in the larger majority, not the 3-5% of people who struggle because a disability, or people who don’t have phones, or people who don’t have pockets. And I feel like anyone not going on a witch hunt to be upset or call people ableist can pretty reasonably know that is what I’m saying. Like they took my statement about general society and said that it implies that I think people with disabilities are idiots for not doing math in their head. That’s like saying that if someone said “The amount of people who trip nowadays is getting so much worse cuz everyone’s looking at their phone.” And someone getting offended because some people are just clumsy or blind - it’s not their fault, it’s ableist to call them idiots for tripping. Like that’s literally just looking at it from the most skewed angle in the assumption that I’m a bad person.

In the case of using ai instead of the calculator basically every device has, does seem lazy to me. It doesn’t really matter why you are doing so. Again disability or not is irrelevant to the point I was making as a whole. As a rule of thumb as someone with multiple learning disabilities I actually try to assume the best in people, that if you failed a test maybe it isn’t about being too lazy to study or too dumb to understand, maybe it was unfair, or maybe you’re a poor test taker…etc. and I guess I just wish people would assume the best of me…

Kumo: Water/Normal

I struggled with this one a little, but I picked this because clouds are made of water, and kumo has sort of a cloud sweater! But kumo's just an all-around goofball, so I just put Normal as his second type.

Stitch: Grass/Rock

I chose grass for stitch because burlap is made of some sort of plant, and rock because sand is just a bunch of tiny little rocks.

Belle: Poison

This one shouldn't be hard to understand, but I'll explain anyway. She's made of poisonous sludge.

Icia: Ice/Steel

The ice one should be pretty self-explanatory, and I chose steel because she's a skilled swordfighter.

Now, I may not know much sign lore, but I DO know that signs are usually made out of wood. Sign seems like a pretty normal guy, though.

I mean, she IS a burning ball of gas. Also, her arms are fire now!

Darkness just kind of fits with dusk. Also, it's usually dark around dusk (time of day) anyway. I couldn't decide the second type for her, and here's why. I chose ice because I remember elsie saying something about how she's connected to ice somehow, and it's usually cold around dusk (time of day). And fairy because dusk seems to be connected to them somehow...? I think?

Jessy: Grass/Fairy

I chose grass for jessy because he's made of wood! And, like, his wife has the fairy type, so why shouldn't he?

Clara: Grass/Steel

I chose grass for clara for the same reason as jessy and steel because of that sword they've got!

Abstraction Anon: Dark/Electric

Well, he lives in the cellar, which is VERY dark, and abstraction hurts. Guess what else hurts? LIGHTNING! /silly

Dialtone seems to be the kind of person who likes to sit in the dark. Also, he sleeps a lot. And he loves (old) phones and has phone cords, so electric just seemed right.

Alchemist: Poison/Bug

The poison part seems pretty obvious, and I chose bug because he's a tiny lil guy who I can probably crush under my shoe. (also mod bug ehehehe)

Helpful Anon: Flying

Helpful anon is just so... "helpful anon" that no other type seemed right.

Alcohol is a poison. Also, he's a butterfly now!

Kopi's got that weird pink goo that she shoots at people... ew... also, kopi has been described to be very strong!

AI Kopi has those metal spider legs coming out of her back, so that works for steel AND bug! Also, she seems severely weakened, and bugs are notoriously weak.

He's a robot (or more accurately, an ai that acts more like a robot than an ai)!

Again, alcohol is a poison! But other than that, he's just a normal guy!

Update on AO3 Situation + Final RAINN Support Event

(this is a little long, but please, if possible, read to the end.)

AO3 has *finally* reinstated my fanfiction To Become the Nightmare and in a way this nightmare situation is over. I'm still extremely frustrated and disappointed though with AO3 especially as I am 99.9% certain the only reason my issue was finally addressed was because I tagged their support page on Twitter/X rather than any of my emails and communications to their actual Policy and Abuse team. They also provided no apology or reason for the delay or an explanation for why their staff provided a 1-week timeline that they then ignored for 3.5 weeks. I'm grateful to have my story back, but this entire ordeal has been awful in so many ways.

I will also admit on a personal note it was also disheartening to see how many folks sent me messages, asks (to the point I locked them down on Tumblr) and comments on AO3 stories (of which I'd know there'd be even more if AO3 hadn't made the blanket decision to lock down all guest comments) wanting to know where I'd be updating now, getting upset over the fact I use Patreon as they don't want paywalls to read my works, asking about the status of current stories and former stories, etc. and very rarely, if at all, even taking into account how all of this was affecting me.

I have poured years into posting on AO3, on making it a platform where I have over 2.5 million words worth of stories for everyone to enjoy, and am dealing with AO3 painting me as some villain because I linked to an organization to try to help sexual assault victims, and their complete lack of communication on top of all of that felt intentional. It's put me in a really bad mental health state and coming in daily to see multiple people asking and asking about how will *they* read my stories and making me feel guilty for not updating just... it really hurt. And the answer was I didn't know entirely what was going to happen and was still hoping for the best outcome with AO3. And contrary to some of the accusations I received, I never intended to put all of my new and upcoming works behind a Patreon paywall and certainly never planned to delete any works other than the single one I mentioned (and I explained why that was). I may have used Patreon's platform (because it has better formatting than say Tumblr) and made the works posted there available to the public (anyone can join as a free member, fyi), but that was never the end-game and the fact so many people got mad and angry and posted honestly kind of cruel asks and comments... I'm really hurt. I'm a person too and I share my works with my own time and energy and to have everyone so embroiled in this "me me me" energy when I was really struggling with what AO3 did, just... makes me not want to post anymore anywhere at all. I won't do that because I won't punish those folks who have been supportive and kind, but please, take a moment before you comment to think how it feels to be the recipient of a message like that. That's all the energy left I have to spend on that but please, be kind. Be understand. Be appreciative for what you do have and remember always that authors have feelings too.

Going forward I'll be looking to get back to updating existing stories and publishing some backlog on AO3 during this suspension/lock; however, I will be holding off on that until AO3 lifts their own blanket ban on guest comments as I know there are plenty of folks who prefer to engage that way and/or haven't yet been able to get accounts. You may have seen as well that my account, given that it seems to be AI-bots leading the reason for the guest ban, has been locked down to only AO3 accounts able to read my works. That will remain in effect until AO3 releases theirs and it may be something I ultimately do to protect my account and my works in the future, but for now once the current AO3 situation has been resolved that will go back to access to guest accounts as well.

In the meantime, with To Become the Nightmare restored and the fact my earlier RAINN support events have thus far yielded $2 for me to donate (which hurts in other ways xD Come on y'all, financial support for a great organization and some emotional support and love for the author, what's not to like about that?) I'm going to do one final event to try to raise some funds for RAINN and at least try to make a small, positive difference in all of this mess.

For the remainder of this week, anyone who leaves an engaged comment (100+ words, no quote-backs in that word count, about the fanfiction at hand) on To Become the Nightmare I will donate $2 per comment to RAINN. It would also personally mean a lot to me as this story never really had a lot of comment engagement in the first place AND on top of that it got a really, really toxic comment. I unfortunately get those folks regularly on sexual assault recovery fanfictions I write because they refuse to accept that everyone heals in different ways AND also refuse to take accountability where if they don't like what they're reading they have the power to hit the back button on their browser and just not read it. I left that particular comment up (you can see it on page 2) if you want a taste of some of the people I still encounter to this day. Anyways, it would mean a lot to hear from those who may want to read it, but given that it both a; has sexual assault and b; is an M-rating please do read it at your own discretion. I had conversation with cai that their target audience is 5 -12 year olds... and this is the reason there is not allowed a kissing scenario in the conversation. This is a little sad, there is no adult mode / safe mode option, because kid can fake their age, and parents can be angry and sue.

Nowadays everything has to be age apropriate. Can we have adult spaces, please. Not everything has to about children.

Sorry. It's blowing my mind a little, because maybe the age generational gap is just too big. I guess. I was 14 when I had my first computer, so target audience on a website that is for 5 - 12 year old on internet is just too weird to think about.

I had similar conversation with a coworker some time ago. She is 10 year younger than I am, and she was saying how Tumblr is bad, because she saw inappropriate stuff, when she was younger. I was mind blown, because I personally never had thing that may trigger body image problems or sexual stuff, you had just block people and unfollow blogs, following only things that you want to see.
