hi omg yeah! unfortunately for all of us i do have thoughts lol...i already know im about to ramble because ive been dying for an excuse to do this for ages so i think it would easiest to break them down into points but tl;dr or i suppose thesis statement i think the fandom characterisation of him is soooo awful lol. terrible 0/10. i do not even massively care about him as a character other than as background for his brother but since he is pretty unavoidable ive been driven to develop opinions.

2. the black cat goth sassy millennial characterisation.

theres this really common characterisation of him where hes like this sassy dangerous deadpan tiktok-esque spurter of witticisms which i just find so cringy and boring and inaccurate. the whole 'ooh he takes his coffee black he looks like a cinnamon roll but he could kill you!!!!' thing that makes me feel like ive been dragged back to tumblr 2015. he kind of sucked he was a conservative who did one good thing in his life and got killed in the process i dont know where people have got this badass thing from he just wasnt. also the idea that he was a goth girl because his name was black? we can try a little harder than that come on now. but yeah im not trying to imply theres some moral problem with characterising him this way i just find it cringy and inaccurate and i think there are much more interesting things you can do with him

3. abuse + relationship with his brother.

another thing i find really annoying is the assumption that he was treated by his parents the same way his brother was. big disclaimer because i can hear the complaints already yes i accept that being a child in a house where there is abuse in and of itself in traumatic and horrifying. but there is no canon reason to believe he was directly abused by his parents the way his parents were, especially considering his brother seemed to be punished for transgressions against his parents. regulus was the good boy he was the better son and he did as they asked. i think people have begun to just assume he was also abused the way his brother was in order to make him more sympathetic or excuse his behaviour (not how this works anyway) and again i find it very lame. the dynamics we actually get from canon are consistently infinitely more complex and interesting than what people then do with them. as for his relationship with his brother theres the whole idea of sirius 'leaving' him in the house which is ridiculous and almost too laughable to discuss but. the idea that regulus is the victim of his abused brother running away...girls get real. he was in his room getting radicalised i dont feel sorry for him. plus his whole relationship with his brother tends to irritate me anyway--i dont know if these people just dont have siblings, but the whole ultra close, sirius being incredibly protective, would die for each other, them against the world thing again seems to contrast everything we actually know about that relationship and also...not all siblings are that close? like theyre just not? idk again, personal taste but i find their super healthy close relationship very boring its kind of a dealbreaker for me!

4. he wasnt conventionally attractive and if you cant deal with ur fav being ugly he's not ur fav

another dealbreaker for me i cannot read something that implies remus and regulus would be friends. to get the obvious out of the way: regulus was a fascist and remus is part of a minority group he would want dead. but otherwise the idea that theyd be friends confirms to me that someone doesnt get either of them and the only reason i think this has gained traction is because regulus doesnt have a personality and in order to position him and james as r/s 2.0 where james stands in for sirius, people just superimposed remus' fanon personality (quiet, sarcastic, dry, bookish, exasperated) onto regulus. which is a characterisation i dont like anyway but then because youve turned them into the same person people then say theyd get on...i cannot think of two people would be gel worse. theyd have nothing in common. nothing to say. absolutely nothing. they would sit in awkward, unpleasant silence. literally no two characters less suited to each other i am begging you. also the substitution of peter for him as the fourth person in their group nowadays bffr...not only is peter far more interesting but also he would not get on with any of them his brother included. i hate when i am reading a fic and he turns up when hes not supposed to. put him back! he belongs ina victorian dollshouse!

6. things i like + how i picture him.

okay done a LOT of moaning. again i dont really care about him as a character im not interested in him apart from how he affects sirius' character and i dont like jegulus so i dont really read much where hes a central figure but i do think he COULD be very interesting if done right, and so things i do like: characterisations that lean into the fact that he was a willing fascist as a teen, willingly radicalised, nasty nasty politics. i like a regulus who is very uptight, who has a very strained relationship with his brother as the younger brother to someone he knows would always have made a better heir than him, was better at practically everything but just didnt want to do it. i think living in the shadow of that would make him crazy uptight and touchy lol. as for stuff which is less grounded in canon and more just how i imagine him: i think he was a nerd, i think he was a serious young boy with a huge sense of responsibility, and i can imagine him having some sort of niche hobby which is quite antisocial like stamp collecting or model railways or reading big dense history books about ww2 or the magical equivalent of one of those. i think he was a bit weird and quite weak and sensitive. his brother is a massive sore point for him. he was not cool or sassy or badass i think he probably wore matching pyjama sets to bed and carried around a handkerchief with his initials embroidered into the corner and clung to his family and his wealth and his ancestry as a marker of his superiority and good breeding for dear fucking life because he did not have much else going for him.

bear in mind that im an epilogue lover and i think Meat/Candy are really valuable pieces that further all of the characters and are also hard canon in the sense that we're looking at just 2 post-game universe outcomes out of an uncountable number (the book in the picnic basket representing post-canon fanfic). i think the characters actions in the epilogues make sense and are satisfying to me. yes even jane (i love alpha jane and i will not do her the disservice of 'cleaning her up' w/o showing her work for it. thats not how you depict a character who grew up with fascist programming). i could totally go on a whole tangent about this specifically but thats another post lol we'd be here forever and its also not stridercest

Hobie sat his guitar down against your coffee table and plopped down on the couch next to you, pressing several kisses to your cheek and temple. To annoy you, for sure. You pushed him off of you.

“Alright, alright, enough-” You said, pressing a kiss to his mouth. “Missed you too. What’s this then?” You waved the spray can in front of him. “You planning on doing some graffiti tonight? Even though you got caught last time?”

Hobie laughed “That’s never stopped me now, has it. But no, this-” He turned the can around in your hand so the front of the label was facing up. “Is a paint sealer. Saw it in the shops this morning.”

“Okay...“ You mumbled as Hobie slung his arm around your shoulder. “What’re you going to be painting?“

“I was figuring that YOU could paint something neat on the back of my guitar,“ He jerked his head towards his guitar right in front of the both of you. “It’s looking a little empty 'round there"

You looked at him with wide eyes. “wh- your guitar? Why?”

“Because I think the stuff you make is dope, why else?” He picked up his guitar to show you the back of it. “Right here, thought that’d be cool, no?”

Why are so many of the antipsychs on Reddit basically fascists when it comes to every single other opinion they have? And antipsych communities on Discord devolve into encouraging suicide. I believe in antipsych beliefs. But I feel there’s no safe space to discuss it.

I also feel like theres so little room for criticism of psychiatry as an institution !

The antipsych reddit also confused me. I shared literally none of their beliefs . I just related with their anger at a system/institution that has harmed them. I dont really use discord but honestly this doesnt surpise me 💀.

I feel like only tumblr has some blogs from anti psych activists who's opinions are actually founded on a consistent and comprehensible criticism and a political theory that actually explains why the psych system harms people and what can be done to change it .

I think this is because criticism of psychiatry that doesnt individualize your own experiences is very taboo and you cant talk about it anywhere so theres little room for systemic criticism to develop. Also psychology positions itself as a "science/just as scientific as medicine" and to question science in todays society is just like questioning god in times of feudalism lol.

I think to criticize a whole system you have to know that youre not alone in what you experienced and also what experiences other people have in this system - but psychiatry doesnt create community, most people who are labelled as mentally ill are very isolated from other people who get the same "treatment" and who have the same experiences so theres no real way to develop an awareness that youre not alone in your oppression. And social media also doesnt create community ,obviously .

It was really hard for me to challenge this taboo that psychiatry created to talk about my bad experiences with this institution .Any time I mentioned that therapy makes me get worse and meds never help and how awful it is that "my whole personality is a disorder which can never be cured" (I genuinely believed this) and for which I also never really wanted a cure because my "personality" is all I am. I was always met with people telling me to try more therapy and more meds and more of the same bullshit that actively harmed me . No one wanted to hear about my bad experiences . I was always silenced with things like "ok it didnt help YOU but youre making other people scared of trying meds !" or "ok it might not have helped you but other peoples lives are saved by psych wards . So dont make other people scared of going there by talking about what happend to you ." :/ People acted like talking about my real life and real experiences harms other people??? Really ironic to claim that Im fearmongering considering that psychiatry relies a lot on fearmongering (like that people kill themselves if they arent institutionalized or if they arent on meds) to justify its abuse.

BUT 1 friend really supported my anger at this institution and listened to me which made other friends also consider my criticism and anger as valid and as worth listening to. Whats funny to me is since my beliefs got more politically "radical" and I believe that the psych system shouldnt be reformed anymore but abolished, other people actually listen more to my criticism of this institution . It helped to read a lot about the subject too though , now I talk about my experiences not as something that sadly happened to me because I'm unlucky but I talk about them as systemic issues that I know others are affected by too.

I'm currently travelling but I'm really hyped about anti psych activism and I want to do more of that when I'm back home . Only reading and talking about how bad this institution is just makes you depressed . Actually doing something to make a change is so liberating .but yea, right now theres no room for this kind of systemic criticism . we have to make room for it.

As a Romani ("gypsy" as some westerners still say - wrongly) whose family was decimated in the Holocaust, please stop tacking on terfs with Nazism, because it lessens the impact of your (rightful, very needed) warnings against fascism. To people like me, it signals that you think trans exclusionary radical feminists are a concern on the level of -- and I cannot stress this enough -- literal genociders, which obscures the fact that christofascists, MAGAts in the US, and right wing terrorism are far more of a present danger to people like me. If you're going to decry fascists on your blog (as you should!), please be aware that Nazi isn't a catch-all term and including terfs with them makes it seem like you don't understand how much of a threat Nazis are. Thank you for making a statement in the first place though.

i said terfs too because i have dozens of terfs swarming my blog at all times and they have gotten me banned before lol. i am well aware that they are not on the same level but i dont think that anything is wrong with not wanting BOTH of them to interact with me? and i dont think i should have to make two separate statements about it just to stress the difference in severity when in reality all i want is for both of them to leave me alone? unless im reading this wrong i dont really understand why i can't say "nazis/terfs/bigots/etc dni" as one sentence and why i need to make multiple different statements about it

I do indeed want to eat glass anytime someone criticises the latter parts of Steven Universe without the context that it was rushed as hell by the network literally because of homophobic reasons.

Also the show is just good actually. Any arguments I've heard so far about the moral aspects of the show being weird seem just wrong to me lol.

I think the show does a very good job of separating characters' actions from the characters themselves? Like pearl tricking garnet to fuse with her was deeply fucked up and will never be ok, garnet makes a point to tell her she doesn't forgive her for it. And rightly so. But also the response to that isn't just pearl should die or something, its that she just moves on and learns to improve herself because that makes her happier and her friends happier, and this is applied to almost every other character too.

Like rose has done a lot of fucked up things, but she's not just supposed to be a villain 'worse than the diamonds' (insane that some people think that). She's the story of someone trying to remove themself from abusive familial dynamics and trying to improve themself despite that history. It makes sense that she takes on more of a negative/ sinister hue, considering the series takes place from Steven's perspective, and out of anybody, he's definitely allowed to hate her a little bit lol. But his own valid biases and feelings don't have to undo all the good that is inside her.

So when the diamonds do fucked up things, like corrupt gems, like indefinitely bubble the real roses, like maintain a fascist conquering regime, and then aren't killed as some kind of 'punishment', it doesn't bother me because I know this show, and I know it hasn't forgotten everything it's said up to this point. Just because they aren't actively being killed by Steven doesn't have to mean they're '''''redeemed'''''. They really were just not an active threat anymore.

It's ok to hate them! In fact I'm fairly sure the show expects you to. Even the fact that they were undoing the damage they had done in future doesn't just magically absolve them of how fucked up what they did was.

Like I really love the episode homeworld bound cause it's this almost mocking display to steven how everything is fine now, (throwing him right back into the princess gauntlet!) and the diamonds are sooooo perfect and cool now, and they have absolutely no problems, even though steven is in one of his lowest mental states to date. And the whole time steven is like "What the hell! You can't just magically make me feel better after everything you've done to me!" and they literally say to him "Lol yeah we can :D whats wrong lol why are you so mad, if you dont think you deserve to be happy thats your problem lol!" Like it's really giving pretentious ass self help yoga instructors, ESPECIALLY white like christ. Their egos are all still definitely there, they're just trying to make up for what they've done, because it should absolutely be on them to do so. It does not absolve them of their crimes and the show doesn't want you to think it does! And of course they can't help steven because they aren't fully respecting how much they've hurt him by that point, and all they do is send him further into his meltdown.

I really think you'd have to be blind to not see that even if Steven isn't fighting them anymore, he HATES the diamonds, and doesn't want anything to do with them now that he doesn't have to stop them from ruining his life. He literally does try to kill white but somehow people will still try to argue that he ''''''''forgave them too easily''''''''. I'm sorry but that argument really doesn't make any sense.

I know this show covers some very heavy topics, so it is going to be divisive. The horrors of how deeply your own family can hurt you is a reality many people are unfortunately very intimate with, so I do understand if people just don't like what the show tried to do, or if it just makes people uncomfortable, that's completely fair. I really do think though that the show is trying to stick up for people like that who have been hurt, and how you still deserve a chance to grow past it, it's surely not trying to dismiss or lessen anyone's trauma associated with their own past.

I'm sure in a better world we would have gotten a longer diamond days arc that didn't feel so rushed. Personally I think even future could have used another season, and the parts of season 5 exploring the fallout of the rose/ pink diamond reveal could have used some more episodes too. Unfortunately CN was very unfair to Rebecca and the crewniverse throughout the entirety of SUs airing.

Anyway I don't even know if I coherently made the point I was trying to, but tl;dr Steven universe is good actually, it should be looked at as a historic show for lgbt media and television, and it could have been even better if it wasn't being brought down every step of the way by a homophobic system, please support queer artists, love u bye
