Hmmm.
Like I've often said, I read every book the local library had on the Holocaust when I was nine. That is not at all why I still startle at loud noises or jump when someone suddenly comes into view or why I had a self-injury phase in my early to mid 20s or why I'm just now really getting to a point of not hating myself and fawning all over the place whenever someone, even a total stranger, disagrees with me or seems slightly upset at me. It is also very much not why I take escitalopram.
So...yeah.
On one hand I guess it's good to listen to and believe people when they say a very basic book from school traumatized them. On the other hand, it's really hard for me to see a book that you are always free to stop reading or a show that you are always free to stop watching as having the same effect as your mother slapping you and choking you and screaming at you or your half-brother pulling out a gun in the midst of his psychotic episode or your mother's boyfriends after your father died when you were 7 occasionally being handsy.
I guess the closest I can get to understanding it is that when I was in elementary school and still in single digits, like around six to eight or so, I had a collection of cards with pictures of animals, and one of the cards had a snake eating another snake I think? Also somewhere I heard a story about someone getting bit when a snake came up out of their toilet.
I asked my mother if that could ever happen to us. She said no because we lived in the country, not the city. Then she forgot about that but she still remembered later on about how when I was a kid and I needed to go to the bathroom while we were out I would ask if we were in the city or the country.
I have the word snake filtered on here now and in ESO when there's occasionally those giant snake mobs I don't look at them while I kill them and I don't like seeing them and I usually feel a very momentary frisson when I see a picture of a snake.
That's not trauma. That's not PTSD. That's not being triggered. It's a little quirk from when I was a kid. I have never been so dysregulated by seeing a snake that I turned to self-injury to calm my nervous system down. I am not so troubled by that momentary reaction to seeing a snake that I asked my doctor for a prescription about it. I have not spent two decades of my life after moving out into my own home working on building self-esteem and boundaries and coping with other people's emotions because I once heard a story about a snake coming up out of a toilet and biting someone.
And for the Holocaust reading, I'd say that's only had good effects. Obviously it greatly affected me but I like and appreciate the me that resulted from it.
I don't know. I know there's always Nuance and everything, but the spousal person is really into kdramas so I listen to a fair few kdrama podcasts and I read kdrama content online, and I'll admit that when someone says they were traumatized by a kdrama I kind of want to comment and tell them that hey, I get it, escitalopram has really helped me, and here's some ways that I've learned to cope and heal and grow over the last 20+ years. Don't know if the startle reaction to sudden sensory input after watching that kdrama will ever go away, but meds can help with a lot of the anxiety and here's how I've been working on building boundaries and self-esteem and regulating my nervous system without using sudden sharp pain to do it if any of that helps.
I'm wondering if, as a society who cares about vulnerable people, we could stop saying "traumatize" when we truly mean "upset"?
I am sick of hearing sad books or movies "traumatize" their readers. I simply do not believe that happens. A traumatic experience might be adjacent to books (I have vivid memories of books I was reading around certain experiences and even how the contents of those books affected my processing of the experiences). But it's not caused by the book. And, y'know. The weather is Christofascist Censorship Attempts outside.
Meanwhile from the other side I continue to be surprised at just how badly people fail to understand trauma and traumatic experiences in general. Watering down the term isn't helping. Find other hyperbole to express that The Bridge to Terebithia gutted you, chewed on your heartstrings, and made you cry your first pair of contact lenses right out of your preteen eyes.

Wishful Thinking
arranged marriage with Nanami… a continuation
pt. 1 - pt. 2 - pt. 3 - pt. 4 - next part
〰・♡・〰〰・♡・〰〰・♡・〰〰・♡・〰〰・♡・〰
It was fair to say that the Belmond Eastern & Oriental Express was by far the most luxurious space you had ever occupied.
Your honeymoon was a weekend-long excursion aboard the aforementioned train. It would take you through the breathtaking Malaysian mountains, right through the heart of the country's culinary capital, and finally over to the coast, where you could spend the night on the beach.
You fiddled with your luggage as your husband left to speak with a steward about getting a cup of coffee. Nights ago, after much berating from your clan elders, Nanami discussed the plans of the trip with you. At the time, you had politely asked if there was a possibility you could have a joint cabin. Nanami told you he had already requested two suites, and that you did not have to worry.
When you arrived, however, giving the polite stewardess your last name, they insisted that there had only been one cabin under your now, shared name.
At this news, your husband seemed more distressed than you. For you though, in the back of your mind, you had almost expected it. Certainly, you would not have put it past your family.
Arriving to your room after some questioning from your husband, you found that the king bed, lavishly accessorized with pillows and throws, could actually become two twin XLs.
He had lifted your suitcase from your hands with one arm and set it on the luggage rack as if it weighed no more than the pillow he had simultaneously been extricating from the dual bed.
He ran his now free hand through his hair, he almost looked panicky, "I apologize. I should have called ahead to ensure your comfort. I can speak with them again and see if they have any other open cabins but for now-"
"Nanami, it's okay-" You move forward to help him de-fluff the mattress. "I should have anticipated this anyway..."
He stands up straight, "In any case, I can sleep in one of the scenic cars- I looked and there are couches and-"
You interrupt again, "Nanami, I am not going to have you sleep on the couch" You chuckle, knowing he really would. "I think I might have given you the impression that you make me uncomfortable."
His eyes raised at this, you continue, "I can assure you that you do not. And I don't mind sharing a room with you."
This whole interaction played through your mind as you waited for your husband to return. He had seemed so professional in that moment, so tense, eyes so wide. He had cleared his throat and asked if you were sure. All you had done was laugh, asking if he was hungry and would like for you to order refreshments.
Of course, he had insisted on going in your stead.
--
The train had fifteen carriages. Eight sleeping cars, two restaurant cars, a piano car bar, and an open-air observation car. After having shifted the bed around, you sat at the table overlooking the window in your room. Nanami had brought back coffee, afternoon tea, and a wide variety of treats. Tarts, fresh fruit, scones, and cookies.
There was a mildly awkward silence between you two as the breathtaking Malaysian jungle passed you by. Just as you were about to take a sip of your drink, Nanami pipes up.
"I wanted to make sure..." He says.
You turn to look at him but he's focused on the foliage just beyond the rails. "I need you to say if you're uncomfortable. I know you have a problem with pleasing people, but nothing would upset me more than your silent discomfort."
You choke down your tea quickly. It took you a moment, but you realize then that you hadn't even been trying to appease him or the staff when you suggested sharing the room, it had felt natural.
After having known the man hardly a week, you had come to view him almost as a friend. The notion, of course, might be due to the fact that you hadn't many friends to speak of, but nobody could deny how kind Nanami was.
"I'm not." You wave your hands in front of your face. "Uncomfortable, I mean."
He squinted at you in a funny way, attempting, you guess, to read your expression. Finally smiling, he takes a sip of his beverage and accompanies you in looking out the shared window. If only you could explain how much you appreciated every thought he gave you.
--
There were two restaurant cars on the train, and you would be swapping between them for meals your duration on board. There was a formal dress code at meal times, and as you spun in the mirror, you wondered if you would be able to fit in amongst all the opulence.
See, you had been trained in table manners, small talk, and most every other area of etiquette, even so, you had rarely strayed from clan meetings or school. It was not common for you to have an outing intended for pleasure.
Without the watchful eye of your family or higher-ups, you could do or say anything you wanted. You had a friend there to speak with.
You fiddled with the sleeve of your dress. Turned this way and that to get a look at every angle. Blurred your lip stain with a finger, then considered if you should reapply.
You ran a finger over the waist of your outfit, brushed off some imaginary dust, and pursed your lips.
Yes, you decided, and reached over for your lipstick once more.
A knock came at the bathroom door.
"Yes! Sorry!" You spun and unlatched the lock, pulled the door open. Hopefully you hadn't been hogging your shared lavatory. You took in the man before you.
On your wedding day, he had been dressed to the nines, hair quaffed, and likely just as striking to observe as he was now. However, you had been a tad bit occupied by your mind back then. And since that day, he had dressed comfortably around you. Smart casual, not too much, not too little either... he even appeared handsome in his pajamas, all this to say, before you now, it felt like you were seeing him for the first time.
He was adjusting his wristwatch when you opened the door. Seeing him like this, you almost wanted to hide behind the wall of the bathroom. You knew, based on what type of man he was, that he would likely feel obligated to spare you a compliment. Even the idea flustered your mind. For the first time since adolescence, you felt a sudden embarrassment at trying to look attractive. You wanted to wipe the lipstick off completely.
You tried to rush and tell him something nice before he got there first, but it seemed as though he was distracted by the image of you. His pupils looked huge in the light of the sconces on the wall and his head twitched ever so slightly to take in the whole image of you.
He didn't rake his eyes up and down in a lustful way, no, he kept his looks appropriate and gentlemanly. Even so, he looked wildly absorbed stepping forward to settle against the doorframe. He held out his free hand to help you step down.
"You look...great..." You beg yourself not to trip, holding his palm and settling to the floor. Shaking a little at your poor choice of words. He simply laughs.
"Me?" He keeps his eyes at the back of your neck, your shoulder, your embarrassed little smile, "You," He shakes his head, "you are the sight to behold."
It tickles your stomach, how genuine he sounds.
--
There was a table reserved specifically for you both, the window beside you painted tropical mountains that raced past at record speeds. The food came in courses and everything was delicious. There was wine and lit candles atop the intricate tablecloths in this car. Under close inspection, the wallpaper seemed to twirl in textured spirals of cream. You felt enlivened to be here.
Even happier still, dessert was coming.
"I think it might be time we try and practice." Nanami tilted his head, observing you.
"Practice what?" You asked, brows raised.
"Discovering you." He smiled.
You laugh, "Nanami. We have been talking all meal, what is there to discover?"
"We have been talking about me all meal." He mimics your tone. "That or the food...or the decor."
You roll your eyes dramatically, "I wanted to know about those things. And the food was good. And the decor is lovely."
"I agree," He nods, "but when I asked what type of refreshment you would like, I was hoping you would tell me, not simply go along with whatever I say."
You chuckle. He's a little too attentive, "I don't have much experience with wine, I preferred you picking."
"That may be true," He smiles goodnaturedly, "but you have been affirming every little thing I say. Did you know that? You know you don't have to avoid disagreements with me, right? I want to know who you are and what you think, not have a copy of myself."
No, you hadn't realized you had been doing that. As a child, you had made yourself small on purpose, it was an easy way to get people to like you. Now, it wasn't even a conscious effort. Nobody seemed to notice before, in fact, everyone prior to Nanami had seemed to appreciate how mailable you were.
"How's this," He started again, "What's your favorite dessert?"
You think and think, tapping your foot. You liked all kinds of desserts, earlier you had ordered the cheesecake alongside Nanami. And back in the cabin you had enjoyed the petit fours.
Nanami knocks a knuckle on the table. "See, this is something most everyone knows. Did you order the cheesecake because that's what I like?" He is grinning at you but his eyes seem discouraged at the thought.
"What? No!" You say, "I really do like cheesecake!"
Your husband grins, "Me too." He points to you now, speaking gently, "But what is your favorite?"
You're taking some time to answer but it really was because you didn't know. It's not as if you were granted allowance to every sweet the kitchens made growing up. You racked your brain trying to conjure a memory of a delicious custard you had eaten at a banquet once.
Just as Nanami was about to speak again, you nearly jump our of your seat, "Crème brûlée!" You recall the dish. Pleased that you could provide an answer. "That's my favorite."
As you reply, your hand comes down onto the table. Suddenly surprised by your force in response. Nanami, though, does not seem embarrassed by your show of joy.
"Very good!" He smiles as you awkwardly sip from your glass. "Crème brûlée," he considers, "very fancy, I've actually never had it."
You set your glass down, "Never? Really?" Once again, you assumed those who were not apart of a clan must be infinitely free. Free to eat whatever they crave.
"I've only had it once but it was so good. I wonder if it was because of the difference of texture... I believe that I would like it even without the caramelized sugar on top though, maybe now... since we live away I could make it sometime..." You taper off, pick up your glass and cover your face with it, had you said too much?
Since when were you such a loud-mouthed?
Nanami never once took his gaze from you. In fact, he might not have all evening, eye contact seemed to be a thing of his. "Well, that sounds delicious. I think it would be nice to share some at home."
He was so good at carrying a conversation, especially after you feel into a mood of humiliation from oversharing. At one point he had excused himself to the restroom and you allowed yourself a moment to breathe.
He was so focused on you. Not your clan, or your abilities, or your placement between the higher ups. No, he was purely focused on you. For the first time, a man had made your heart race.
Throughout all your life, at home, at school, in clan meetings, you had been viewed as a broodmare, a piece of meat that would carry on your clan name and ensure strong sorcerer children.
Knowing that, it was not difficult to become revolted by the seductive men who roamed their eyes over your body. Saw you how everyone else did. Wanted you for a prize.
Nanami Kento. You tightened your lips to keep your grin from showing. Did everyone feel this way about their friends? Maybe you are just weak to kindness.
The very man occupying your thoughts was at that moment leaned against the wall of the the locomotive, nowhere near the restrooms.
He had so much praise to speak but he did not want to embarrass you further. It seemed it was easy to do so.
He waited patiently for the steam engines attendant to return. When she had heard his request, she was more than happy to fulfill his wishes.
"Excuse me," He had asked, "I'm here to celebrate my honeymoon, you see, and my wife is very fond of Crème brûlée. You wouldn't happen to be able to specially make some?"
This must be a sign of luxury, he thought. To order something that was not on the menu and still have it presented to you.
Kento grinned like a child on Christmas as he passed between train cars. Two ramekins were tucked behind his back. He lived to see your smile, to hear you laugh, to admire this person, this strange woman he was hardly familiar with, yet craved to know. His wife.
--
When Nanami arrived from the bathroom, he had an oddly mischievous glint in his eye. He seemed to move something to his lap once he was seated. This grin of his was contagious.
"Well, you look suspicious." You chuckle. But it did not last long, no, because the man before you reached out to hand you a small chilled spoon.
"I suppose I cannot hide it." He said, placing two ramakins on the table. It only took a moment before you gasped, pointing at him as if to accuse him of a crime.
"You! Is that- w-when? Wait a moment." You placed both your palms facing him and coughed a laugh. "Did you really- I-" You could hardly believe him.
"Use your words." He hummed, placing the dessert in front of you, "I know you've got them."
The teasing forced you to breathe slowly. "Nanami." You whispered harshly.
"Quite the array of sweets in the bathroom, you wouldn't believe."
"No!" You laughed, Nanami swelled at the sound, "I daresay I wouldn't."
"Try it, is it as good as you remember?"
You take your spoon, look up to the man that had gone out of his way to bring you this small joy, crack the sugar, and scoop the custard into your mouth. It's hard not to make some obscene noise at the shuttering chill it brings you.
"It's even sweeter."
--
That night, after changing out of your dress, and he his suit, the two of you squeeze past partygoers in the bar car and walk your way to the very end where the open observation car was left vacant.
One might imagine the night air humid but only a warm breeze flies past you as you both take in the scenery. It seems impossible to suggest that you had only met this man a week or so prior. The fear you had felt being chained to him left almost as quickly as it had greeted you. How warm it feels to have a friend.
Never before had you been so free to speak of what you wished and to eat what you wished. You had three whole days ahead of you to explore this beautiful country, there were so many excursions to choose from and a man at your side who was very good at making decisions.
"I always wanted to come to Malaysia." He suddenly spoke up.
As fantastical as this whole day had seemed, you couldn't help recognizing the illusion that was being hidden. The two of you were practically strangers. Polite acquaintances perhaps. Married or not, this was likely not how Nanami saw his life going. Without the looming responsibility of a clan on his shoulders, he probably felt less free than ever before. Had he even wanted to be married prior to the higher-ups enlisting him for this role?
"Really? I'm glad you're able to come...though-" you pause, "I am sorry the circumstances are a bit..." You tapper off, waggling your head, hoping he would pick up what you meant.
He, of course, did not follow, "What? No, don't be sorry, what do you mean, 'circumstances'?"
His focus, that was once so ardently on the countryside passing by, was now on you, attempting to read the hidden pages of your shameful smile without breaking your delectably closed spine.
"I just mean... I'm sure you didn't intend to come in this position." You make a show of your hands. Trying to make light and humor of the situation. He simply cocks his head. "Married. I mean, arranged to me. It's just probably not what you expected."
He doesn't speak for a long moment. But then he is bending down and meeting your eyes. You can feel his breath on the exposure of your neck and he still smells of the caramelized sugar he had sought out just for you.
"I'm glad you're with me. You haven't...don't say that." He sighs, looking at you closely and whispering your name, "Don't apologize. I wouldn't have it any other way."
The idea is so absurd, your shoulders tense with your laugh. "How could that be true? You-you barely know me?"
He stretches his hand down to your own, softly strokes it, "And I get to know you. How exciting is that? We can learn together."
And as the wind whips in your face, you feel grateful for the slightness of the moons reflection hiding your flush. He settles your hand down again and smirks at you. A world away from the higher-ups, it's hard to imagine any trouble or obligation coming your way. This weekend was the two of yours. And as your heart raced and mind dazed at your husbands gentle and warm touch, you hoped this feeling never departed.

How about Batfam x male reader, where reader is Russian and has a slight accent, unless someone really pissed him off, that's when it really shows. Reader is always eloquent and kind, and you don't notice his accent unless you are really paying attention to the way he says certain words, but after a few galas where a fat businessman keeps insulting him somehow, and Damian or Jason are trying to defend Reader, but Reader just tells them no. When the fat businessman insults his brothers, Reader finally snaps and just goes full blown Michael Blackson Teacher style roast on him and his entire family in front of everyone, even his Russian accent comes out (I just think it would be funnier with the accent). After the gala is done, Bruce tries to scold the reader, but everyone is constantly trying to contain their laughter except Jason, as Reader finally snapping is the funniest thing that ever happened at a gala. Even Alfred can't bring himself to scold Reader for what he has done because he was there.
I know you are probably busy, so whenever you have the time for this one-shot. Thank you.
Oh hell yeah. Also, I couldn't find a GIF. I'm sorry...
Summary: (Y/N) is Russian and takes no disrespect.
Warnings: fat shaming? Only when (Y/N) was insulted.
Bruce would say that all of his children are nice, but (Y/N) is an exception to a certain degree. He is nice, eloquent, kind and loves to help others. He's Russian, can speak Russian fluently and his accent is rather hidden. You can hear it come out in certain words, but other than that, it is rather hidden. And Bruce loves to listen to it. Especially when he is frustrated about something, or simply can't remember a word in English.
That's when the Russian actually comes out. Of course everyone will revert to their native language when frustrated, mad and everything else. It was something that was rather endearing. Cute even. Just some grumbling underneath his breath about something in Russian. (Y/N)'s brothers found it cute. And they started to pick up a few phrases of their own.
But not curse words, because Alfred doesn't want to hear any cursing in the manor. None. Not in English, Russian, Arabic or any other language. It doesn't matter if it's a dead language or a live one, because Alfred is going to lay down the law.
Even now, while there was a gala going on in the Manor, Bruce watched his sons carefully. Jason was evading it with everything in him, Tim was getting some food, Damian was his usual grouchy self, Dick was conversing with some people and so was (Y/N), using his eloquence to get his points across. Bruce smiled as he brought a glass up to his lips, sipping some champagne.
All was well.
For once.
Bruce was surprised, but wasn't going to complain or actually question why the universe has decided to bring peace upon the Wayne Manor. Peace was seemingly a rare thing in this Manor and Bruce was going to cherish it for the rest of the night. Actually, for as long as it lasts, Bruce will cherish it.
Oh, that peace wasn't going to last long.
At all.
As (Y/N) was talking to a woman about some charities, a big, fat businessman approached. Sure, it's not nice to call someone fat, but, if someone's stomach is spilling over the pants, then it's just a fair game. Bruce watched from afar, just observing the room.
He raised his brow when he saw (Y/N) frowning, clearly mad about something. Bruce could make out a few words and one of them struck a nerve. Commie, or short for communist. (Y/N) never liked that. Never. Just because Russia was a communist country, that doesn't make him bad. And how the hell is that an insult?
(Y/N) shot right back, calling him a capitalist for not caring about his workers, which were the more prevalent rumors in the high society. Bruce watched, wondering how it will unfold. But then it hit him. This was the man that (Y/N) had problems with for the last few galas. (Y/N) always remained polite, but Bruce knew that it would rile him up and upset him.
Damian and Jason noticed and both have jumped to his defense, defending him with polite and tense smiles. But the businessman wasn't letting up. At all. Being this relentless in insulting was rather... Weird. Bruce kept watching, ready to step in the moment it gets too tense or it escalates.
And (Y/N) had a rule. It was, insult him all you want, but insult his brothers? He will retaliate. Tenfold.
And that's where the fat man opened the door for him to retaliate. The moment that the man insulted Damian's Arabic heritage and Jason's life on the streets before adoption, (Y/N) was absolutely fuming and has decided to go onto the offensive.
He hurled insults onto the man, but one that made Bruce nearly lose his mind was, and he quotes this, " You are one sandwich away from a heart attack. " And (Y/N) wasn't done, far from done. Firstly, the Russian accent came out during all of this and he wasn't letting up. Since the family of the fat businessman joined, (Y/N) was not battling on two different fronts.
And he wasn't holding back.
At all.
Jason and Damian were trying to keep straight faces but it's not easy.
Bruce had no doubt that Jason would later say that the insults are a work of art.
The gala was now over and everyone was sitting in the kitchen, munching on the leftover food. Alfred was standing there, watching (Y/N), knowing what had went down in the ballroom. Bruce was supposed to scold him. Maybe ground him, perhaps. Take away certain things?
But then again, he was defending himself. The man insulted him first so... Well...
So Bruce was going to try to scold (Y/N). He has to. And that was difficult when everyone around them was trying not to laugh so hard. Even Alfred. Seeing (Y/N) snap, when he was normally kind and calm. And with a Russian accent too. It was all too much for Jason who was laughing his ass off the entire time whole Bruce was trying to scold the reader.
" You know what, I won't scold you, " Bruce declared, making Jason cry from laughter.
" (Y/N) snapping is the best thing that has ever happened at a gala. Ever. EVER, " Jason wheezed out, slapping his knee.
Alfred tried not to break, because he was supposed to be a serious one, but Alfred couldn't even hold it together. He was about to break. Should (Y/N) be scolded? Yes. However, he didn't start the insulting, the man did... Alfred tried to keep it together. He did.
And he was going to keep it together.
So, to conclude the evening, in the history of galas, (Y/N) has put his mark in it.

Order Up, Chaos Served
A Levi x reader fanfic (for LeviWeek 2024)
Crossposted from AO3
You get to go on a blind date with none other than Levi Ackerman. There's just one catch: you have to make it an epic disaster.
tags: modern AU, romcom vibes but make it thirsty, fluff and humor cw: contains some swearing | word count: 3.5k
A/n: for day 6 of LeviWeek, I used the prompts "blind date" and "role-play". You'll have to decide for yourself whether this qualifies for the "dystopia" prompt, lol. (It's a modern setting AU where Annie's dad is a rich CEO).
(Levi x reader Masterlist)
"So, what did you want to talk about?" You asked, fiddling with the teabag tag hanging from your cup.
"It's happening again," Annie said gravely. She was sitting opposite you, unsmiling.
"Damn. Another blind date?"
Annie nodded, her hands clenching into fists on the table. "Like, I know he doesn't approve of Armin. As if his daily offhanded comments about him being a wimp weren't enough. But now he's gone over to pretending that Armin doesn't even exist."
Her eyes narrowed. "It's like he's enlisted every eligible bachelor in this damn country to make my life a living hell. Says that I need a 'real man' by my side if I am to take over the company. I can't take it anymore."
You scoffed. "Like you aren't perfectly capable of leading the company by yourself. Why should your choice in a partner have anything to do with it?"
"Exactly. He's driving me insane. I swear, if I have to sit through even just one more blind date, I'm gonna explode. Don't know what I'll do to him then, but one thing's for sure, it won't be pretty. "
You gave her a sympathetic look.
Annie met your gaze with a sly smile. "That's where you come in."
"Me?"
"Yes. You're gonna go on that blind date for me."
"What?" You almost spit out your tea. "Why the hell would I do that?"
"Multiple reasons. For one, you'd prevent and all-out war with my old man. You wouldn't want me to end up disowned, now would you?" She gave you an innocent look.
"Two. It's free food. I know you can't resist that."
You rolled your eyes. "I'm not that easily bought."
"We'll see about that." Annie waggled her brows. "It's at that exclusive sushi place even A-list celebrities can't get into without connections."
"Fuck it, I'm in."
Annie grinned. "I knew you'd come around eventually. But there's a small catch – you'll have to pretend to be me."
Oh no.
"And you'll have to make sure the date's a total disaster."
Oh no, no, no.
"So bad, in fact, that my reputation will be in ruins and no eligible bachelor will ever look my way again." She gave you an angelic smile.
"Think you could do that for me?"
– –
And that was the story of how you'd ended up here, in front of a high-end restaurant, wearing clothes that cost more than your car and all of your other possessions combined. You even wore a wig to look more like Annie. All in the name of friendship. (And free sushi.)
That sushi better be good.
You stepped inside, where an elegantly dressed hostess greeted you with a perfectly practiced smile and a courteous bow of her head.
"Welcome, do you have a reservation?"
Hell yeah. You put on a polite smile. "Yes. It should be in the name of 'Ackerman'?"
That was the name of your date for the evening, a certain Levi Ackerman, apparently a nouveau-riche-type of businessman who qualified as a real man in the eyes of Annie's father. He was supposedly a few years older than you. Not that it really mattered with the plans that you had in store for him.
The hostess nodded pleasantly and motioned towards the dining area. "If you would follow me, please."
You stalked after her in your high heels, feeling a little out of your depth.
"Eyes on the prize," you muttered under your breath. If nothing else, you would stuff your face tonight.
But as you passed the tables, eyeing the exquisitely arranged dishes, your dreams of a feast were crushed instantly – the portions were tiny.
"Here it is," the hostess said, leading you past a delicate, ornamental paper divider to your table in the quietest corner of the restaurant. Mr. Ackerman was already there – not surprising, since you were almost half an hour late, the first part of your plan to leave the worst impression possible. His back was turned to you, so the only thing you could see was his dark undercut.
The hostess was the first to reach the table, pulling out your chair with a subtle, practiced gesture. "Yello!" You exclaimed loudly as you dropped into the seat, slouching with your elbows on the table. The man in front of you looked up with a frown. Your mouth fell open: The guy was hot. Somehow, Annie had failed to mention that not-so-little detail to you. You could already feel your cheeks start to burn, but you had to go through with the plan.
"Hi. I'm Annie Leonhart," you said in a fake, high-pitched voice, thrusting out your hand. "But my friends call me Leo – like the lion. RAWR!" You transformed your hand into a claw before he could take it, brandishing it under his nose.
Needless to say, he didn't look very impressed.
"I'm Levi," he said in an unflinching monotone. Damn, even his voice was hot.
You let out a shrill laugh. "How funny. I had a hamster with that name once."
Levi looked at you for moment, his expression flat. "Good to know. I hope your hamster had better manners than you do."
You nodded earnestly. "He was the most well-behaved hamster. Such a good boy."
Then you turned your gaze downward, squeezing your eyes shut to force out a few tears.
"Rest in peace, little one," you said, sniffling.
When you looked back up, his eyes were narrowed at you. You should probably tone it down a bit, or this date would be over before you even got to the entrées.
"Sorry, I get nervous at these things," you explained.
He gave you a curt nod.
Before you could say anything else, the waiter approached.
"Good evening. My name is Ryotaro, and I'll be taking care of you tonight."
He gave you a slight bow, before carefully setting down the menus in front of you.
"May I recommend our omakase for tonight? It is a selection of our chef's finest sushi, prepared with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Or, if you prefer, you may choose from our à la carte options."
"We'll do à la carte," you said immediately, not giving Levi any opportunity to get a word in.
"Certainly," Ryotaro said. "Please take your time. I'll return in a few moments to take your order."
Levi leaned back in his chair, his arms crossed over his chest. You could feel his eyes on you, scrutinizing you, like they were probing your innermost thoughts. You swallowed and looked away from his face, trying to avoid his gaze. His sleeves were riding up a bit, revealing the veins protruding from his well-toned forearms. It wasn't fair. How was everything about this man so goddamn hot? Get a grip, you told yourself. You cracked your knuckles and reached for the menu. This was what you were here for. The food. Not the man. Even if he was delicious. Probably.
You tried not to gasp at the prices as you scanned the menu. It wasn't like you had to pay for any of this. In fact, this was your pay.
You glanced at Levi over the edge of your menu. He, too, was quietly reading what the restaurant had to offer.
You cleared your throat. "A lot of seafood, isn't it?"
"It's a sushi restaurant." He didn't look up from his menu.
"Tough crowd," you said. The room fell silent again.
You took a gulp of the water provided on the table, but your mouth was still dry like a desert. This was even harder than you had anticipated. The man didn't give you anything to work with.
When Ryotaro came back to the table, you breathed a sigh of relief.
Levi ordered first. "I'll start with the Shishito Peppers with Miso Glaze. For the main dish, I'll have the sushi and sashimi platter, chef's selection. As for drinks, I will get a green tea."
"Certainly, sir." Ryotaro turned to you. "And what may it be for the lady?"
"I'll get the Daiginjo sake. A whole bottle, please." There was no way you'd get through this evening sober.
"As you wish. I can bring you a tokkuri, a carafe."
"That will do nicely," you said sweetly. "As for the food… I'll have everything."
Ryotaro blinked at you. "E-Everything?"
"Yes, everything." You looked at him with a dead serious expression. "For the entrées, I'll have the Tuna Tartare with Yuzu and Avocado, the Shishito Peppers with Miso Glaze, the Chawanmushi, the Seared Toro Carpaccio, and the Agedashi Tofu, please. I hope you won't make me recount the main dishes, too."
"Certainly not," Ryotaro said politely, having caught himself again. "Will it be the full portions, or may it be a bit of everything?"
"Full portions," you said, not missing a beat.
"Absolutely. Would you like to order all of our side dishes, as well?"
"Yes, that would be most darling."
"Certainly," Ryotaro said in a measured tone, betraying nothing. What an absolute professional.
He bowed slightly, then quietly stepped back, leaving the table.
Levi took a sip of his water, seemingly unbothered by your excessive ordering. You gave him an incredulous look. He put down the water, placing it on the table with a soft thud.
"You're really going all out, aren't you?" he said dryly.
"Of course. I'm here for the food."
He raised an eyebrow at you. It was a good look on him. (Everything was a good look on him.)
"Just for the food," you reiterated. It physically hurt you to say it.
"Is that so," he said, impassive.
"Yes. Daddy wants me to go on dates to find a real man. But I'm not into real men." You made a dramatic pause. "I prefer them two-dimensional, you know? Like from an anime. They're just so much cooler." You held your breath as you waited for Levi's reaction.
He didn't even flinch. "Of course they are cooler. They're not real."
"They are real for me!" You protested, adding a bit of a whiny undertone.
That earned you an eye roll.Yes! You were getting there.
"I'm sure they are very real... in your head. Good luck finding a two-dimensional guy that you can get dinner with, let alone hold a conversation."
You scoffed. "It's not like you are that great at holding a conversation. You're not the most talkative guy."
He gave you a deadpan look. "Good. I should be your type then."
Damn, that was smooth. You could feel your face heating up at his words.
"I'll have you know that the anime guys in my head are great conversationalists. I have a very vivid imagination, you know?"
"You'd need it, since you'd essentially be both sides of the relationship. Rather one-dimensional, actually."
He had a point. But of course, you couldn't let him know that. You let out a dramatic sigh. "Still more exciting than any real men I've encountered so far."
"Maybe you met the wrong ones."
"All of them corporate lackeys, like you. I'm sure you don't really want to be here, either. You're just trying to further your agenda, get a foot in the door of daddy's company. At least I'm being honest about what I want." You flipped your hair back for additional theatrics.
Levi tilted his head, his cool eyes fixed on you with newly-found interest.
"So that's what you think this is. Explains a lot."
You met his gaze, challenging him. "Am I wrong?"
"About me playing some corporate game? Yes. While it's true that I'm here because I owed Leonhart a favor, I'm not trying to get anything out of this. Nor am I planning on doing any further business with him, for that matter. This is separate."
"Right," you said with thinly-veiled sarcasm.
Before he could get a chance to respond, Ryotaro was back at your table, having wheeled in your entrées and drinks on a serving cart. He transferred your drinks to the table, setting down a ceramic carafe for you. You watched him pour you a glass and immediately grabbed it when he was done, downing it in one swift motion. He refilled it without batting an eyelid.
"The Shishito Peppers for you, sir," he said, placing the dish in front of Levi.
"And which one may you prefer to eat first?" He asked, turning to you.
"Whatever you recommend. I'm going to eat them all anyway. Just put as many as will fit on the table," you replied with a smile. The food was beautifully arranged, each dish looking like dainty little artworks with their delicate garnishing and vibrant colors. It made your mouth water in anticipation.
"Certainly," Ryotaro said, moving some of the dishes to your table. "I'd recommend the Tuna Tartare for a light and refreshing start. You could proceed with the Shishito Peppers for some mild heat, then move on to the heartier dishes. Would this be to your liking?"
"You bet," you said enthusiastically. This elicited a faint smile from Ryotaro, a nice change from his usual stiff demeanor. He didn't know it yet, but he would get a huge tip tonight for putting up with your antics. Annie had given you her gold card, and you intended to make good use of it.
As soon as he had left your table, you took out your phone and snapped pictures of every single dish. Levi gave you a look.
"You planning to frame those?" He sounded slightly amused.
This wasn't a good direction. You needed to double down on the weirdness.
"Almost. These are for my diary," you said with a serious nod, like this was perfectly normal. "Right, of course I'll need a snapshot of you, too."
You pointed the camera at him and took a photo without asking for his permission, perfectly capturing his frown.
You put on a pout. "You didn't even smile. What will daddy think? He might think you're not having any fun."
"Oh, I'm having fun alright," Levi muttered under his breath.
You snickered. This was more like it. He seemed a bit resigned, already. You just had to work him a little bit more. After the entrées, of course.
As you took your first bite, your eyes lit up with pure and utter delight, the exquisitely tender tuna melting in your mouth, harmonizing perfectly with the acidity of the yuzu. You couldn't stop a huge grin from spreading over your face. This was definitely worth the cost, even if it meant making a complete fool of yourself.
Levi watched you, and for a second, a ghost of a smile passed over his lips.
"You really are just here for the food, aren't you," he noted wryly.
"You know it!" You exclaimed in between bites. You savored every last one of them, closing your eyes to bliss out without any distractions.
"Tch. You look like you're about to propose to the chef."
You opened your eyes to grin at him. "That's a fantastic idea! I totally should."
"A shame that he's three-dimensional, though," he quipped in that monotone of his, which shouldn't be allowed to sound this damn good, but it somehow did. You actually laughed out loud at this – your real laugh – but you didn't even notice.
You shrugged. "Everyone should be allowed one flaw."
He did the eyebrow-raise again. It made your heart beat faster. "Are you implying that I have more than one?"
"We already established this. You're not the best at carrying a conversation."
"I think I'm carrying this one just fine."
"Even a broken clock is right twice a day." You smirked.
"Tch. You're being quite a rude brat right now."
Your smirk grew wider. "Everyone should be allowed one flaw, remember?"
Levi snorted. There was a slight quirk to the corners of his mouth, a bit higher on one side, like his smile would be lopsided if only he'd allow it to fully form.
His eyes were locked with yours. Your heart was thumping in your chest.
Ryotaro's polite voice cut through the tension between you. "Is everything to your liking?"
You gave him a dazed look, like you'd just woken up from a dream.
"Yes," you said softly, almost inaudibly.
"It's good," Levi said, his face blank.
That made you snap out of it. "Good? Just good? It's phenomenal! Heavenly!" You gesticulated wildly with your hands to underline your words.
"I'm glad," Ryotaro said, sounding genuinely pleased. "May I take your empty dishes?"
"Sure."
You had finished most of the entrées already. The portions really were criminally tiny.
Ryotaro served you the remaining ones from the cart, then wheeled it away.
The silence that followed was charged, somehow. Different from before. You knew you should probably do something ridiculous, outrageous, something to tarnish the good name of the Leonharts, but you just couldn't bring yourself to do it.
Surprisingly, Levi was the one to break the silence.
"So you're an ill-mannered brat who prefers anime men over real ones. Any more flaws I should know about?"
"Of course not. I'm perfect," you said, doing the dramatic hair flip again.
There was a ripping sound, and suddenly your head felt much lighter. Something fell to the ground with a weak flop. You stared at it in horror. It was a mop of blonde hair – the wig had fallen right off.
Shit. "I-I can explain," you stammered. "I have severe dandruff, and I didn't want it to fall on my black dress. That's why I wanted to cover my hair, but it's rude to wear hats in restaurants, so I opted for a wig, and –"
"You can stop the charades. I know you're not Annie Leonhart," Levi cut you off. "I checked her photo beforehand, and you look nothing like her."
You sighed, resigning yourself to your fate. "Damn, it was the nose, wasn't it?"
"Yep."
"Fuck. So we've both been playing pretend this entire time? Why didn't you say anything sooner?" You searched his eyes for some sort of clue, but came up short.
"I wanted to find out what your intentions are. See how far you would take this."
"And what did your little investigation uncover?"
"That you're really into food. "
You flashed him a sheepish smile. "Dang, I guess I'm easier to read than I thought. That's all you gathered, Mr. Detective?"
"Well, you also have quite the comedic talent. You might want to consider a career in that field."
You chuckled softly. "Glad I could at least provide some entertainment for the evening."
Levi nodded. "I still have some questions though."
"I can imagine."
"I'd like to know the story behind all this. But I'd understand if you'd rather keep your privacy."
"It's fine," you said with a wave of your hand. "You deserve some answers. Actually, I'm Annie's best friend. She already has a boyfriend, but her father doesn't approve of him and wants to set her up with someone he prefers. You know, the classic story." You rolled your eyes. "Well, Annie was fed up with the constant blind dates and wanted to put an end to them once and for all. That's where I came in. She kinda roped me into this with the promise of free food…" You awkwardly ran a hand through your hair.
He huffed out a laugh. "You really did this only for the food? Should've asked for more."
"I know, right? But anyway, the idea was to ruin her reputation, make sure no eligible bachelor would be caught dead within a mile's radius from her... Guess that didn't go quite as planned."
Levi shook his head. "If you wanted someone to badmouth her, you picked the wrong person."
"So I gathered. You're not exactly the rumor spreading type. Not chatty enough."
"Right. Not as conversational as the cool anime dudes in your head," he deadpanned.
"Shut up." You grinned. "You know I only did this to fuck with you."
"Didn't work."
"Not even just a little bit?" You asked. "A teeny tiny little bit?"
He shook his head.
"Not even a micro bit? A nano bit?" You leaned in, giving him big doe eyes.
"Fine, I'll give you that. You got off to a strong start."
The smile on your lips grew even wider. "Yeah? You liked that? RAWR!" You gave him the lion claws again.
"Don't push it," he said, but there was a spark of amusement in his eyes.
"Admit it, you want to see more of it."
"No." He gave you a long look. "But I'd like to see more of the real you."
Your heart skipped a beat. "Did you just ask me on a second date? "
"I suppose I did. Figured it couldn't be any worse than this one."
"Joke's on you. We're not even at the main course. This date isn't over yet." And you had a feeling it was about to get a whole lot better.
A/n: I admit the anime guy thing might've been a bit meta xD Btw, reader absolutely brought containers in her purse to take the leftovers. Can't have the good food go to waste, lol.
It's out <3 @nironasaran

Random idea of Jazz and Jason living on a farm in the country together. Caring for the animals, making their own food, domestic sunsets on the porch.
(*starts tap dancing in joy* this got very long lmaooo)
Jason stared into the horizon, as the sun began to set, casting the world into golden yellow and fire red hues. He was still standing, just holding his scythe in one hand as he heard the rustle of wheat behind him.
Jazz stood next to him, watching the sky alongside him before she turned and leaned against his shoulder. "You shouldn't stare into the sun."
Jason hummed. He wrapped an arm around her and finally peeled his eyes away from the approaching nightfall. He kissed her forehead and said, "I know. Shall we go inside?"
She nodded and they walked together back to their home, a little farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. A barn and a mill were also nearby, providing them with more food. They were surrounded by fields on two sides, a large stretch of forest on the other, and a river weaving in between. Shadow was waiting for them at the door, their tail wagging as it watched them approach.
Jason closed the door when they were all inside, locking the several chains and deadbolt locks. Jazz closed all of their windows and blinds. Shadow disappeared in and out of their namesake, hopping in every dark corner of their home before coming back, confirming that it was safe and locked tight.
When they were done, Jazz pushed him to his seat and began dishing out food. He smiled at the sight of her bringing out the pheasant he had hunted on a plate, before she brought bowls of soup and bread over.
"Has anything happened while I was taking care of the fields?" He asked.
Jazz paused and then nodded. "Yes. I saw a straggler, so I killed them before anything could happen. They were in the woods, and I think they were alone, but I can't guarantee it."
Jason's heart sped up a beat at the thought of Jazz being alone while a straggler had been far too close to them, before he took a deep breath and calmed down.
"Alright. If that's true, we should comb through the woods one more time to make sure it's clean. I don't want anything to ambush us."
Jazz nodded. He reached over to brush her hair from her face and lay a kiss on her forehead. She smiled and he relaxed at the happiness on her face before they both went back to eating.
"What about you?" She asked. "How's the fields? And livestock?"
"Our chickens are doing well," he said thoughtfully. He looked down at his food and praised, "You've outdone yourself again, princess. This tastes amazing."
Jazz beamed again. Jason continued, "I think we have enough food to last us awhile. I'm not sure what winter is going to look like, but when we investigate the woods, we can look into the nearby towns and see if there's anything left to salvage."
Jazz nodded. Then she began slowly, "By the way... about Alfred..."
Jason paused, eyes wide. He looked at her and her expression was worried. "What about him? Did he get out? Did he do something to you?"
Jazz looked at her soup, mostly watery with carrots and potatoes and the barest amounts of herbs. "... he spoke to me today. He called me Miss Gordon."
Jason couldn't help his intake of breath and the hand reaching out to cover his mouth. "What?! But— But isn't he supposed to be..?!"
She nodded quickly. "That's what I thought too. But I think, he's either starting to remember things and might've recognized my hair or... or he's learning to imitate human speech." She winced from her words, but Jason didn't really notice.
He was thinking of the possibilities.
Ever since that faithful day, it had only been him, Jazz, and Shadow all on their own. Shadow had helped them both get away from the chaos and deaths, but they were pretty much isolated. All they knew was that the entire world had gone to shit and no one could reach them.
He had no idea if his family or friends were okay. Not even Jazz could reach out to her own family. She had no idea what was happening, and all they had was each other.
Things hadn't really changed even when Alfred had stumbled onto the slice of paradise and peace Jason had carved out for himself and Jazz. They had to lock him in the basement, but since there was nothing they could do about his condition, this was their only way of handling it without killing him for good.
Jason focused back on Jazz, who was nearly wilting from some misplaced sense of guilt. He reached out again to hold her hand, squeezing as he said, "I don't blame you for anything, Jazz. No matter what he says... protect yourself first, okay? Your safety matters most to me. I think for now, let's just continue observing him."
She nodded. Jason turned to Shadow and asked, "Hey, could you keep an eye on Alfred for me? If he does anything or gets out, wake us up."
The ancient looked up and nodded, and that was settled. Dinner continued in quiet chatter as the tension eased, and eventually they prepared for bed.
Jason had never expected to live such a strange life of domesticity.
As night fell and Jazz slept in his arms with her long limbs wrapped around him like an octopus, Jason could not help but marvel at the situation, in a house with the woman he loved, peaceful and without any heroics, with his grandfather in the house somewhere too (although Alfred was not really the same.)
Even if the world was ending, with the people he loved most around him, Jason did not feel worried.
His eyes began to droop.
Soon, he too fell asleep. As the world around them continued to move, Jason felt secure in his bed with Jazz in his arms and Shadow curled up by their feet.
The earth would continue spinning.

Okay, finally caught up on the full VOD and here are some messy thoughts
...
So. UHHH. On a gut emotional level, I fucking hated that lmao. Whole chapter of my life finished with a bang and a whimper. Las Nevadas Labor Union is over, y'all. The boss just deny, defend, deposed himself. Holy shit.
On an intellectual, thematic level... I... can't really... argue with that? Like, we didn't actually expect a character that cc!Q explicitly said was inspired by Walter White to receive a happy ending or a functional relationship, did we? We were really high on our copium supply, good grief.
I could, and still might, write a whole meta about how c!Quackity has been passively suicidal with a foreshortened sense of future for a very long time. As far back as Doomsday, he didn't care if he lost his life, as long as he got to watch those who hurt him go down first. He declared so many times that he would die with his country. He was incessantly compared to c!Wilbur, both by other characters and by the narrative itself. He was fucking terrified of being betrayed again, but he always expected it, and moreover did nothing to prevent it. He told c!Foolish and c!Purpled outright that they would have every right to kill him for what he did to them. Didn't even consider making himself immortal with the revival book, instead focusing on making sure c!Dream would no longer have it. Didn't fight back when Slime killed him. Doubled down on his mistakes, and in hindsight rationalized everything as inevitable. Wrested back control the only way he knew how, following another's model. Las Nevadas was a broken institution, built by a man who had given up on fixing anything. His story was always about the self-perpetuating cycle of power and abuse.
This... isn't shocking, unfortunately. If anything, it was too obvious an ending.
I won't go too deep into the OOC implications, because they will make me sound... way more parasocial than I want to be. But I don't think it's controversial to say that the DSMP holds a lot of complicated, difficult, bittersweet memories for many of its former members. It does not surprise me at all that the ending cc!Q chose for his arc was an unhappy one. There are several possible conclusions I would have greatly preferred, but none could have realistically happened without Certain People returning. I wonder how aware the creator was of that, and how much those emotions bled into the writing.
And while I'm... still not certain how I feel about c!Quackity blowing himself up even after being given a second chance (I will always prefer "live and try to do better" à la Bojack Horseman for characters like this), I see the in-universe logic behind it, and everything up to that point was completely in character. Right down to his denial of having ever done the deed, boasting that his enemies deemed him important enough to kill, while ironically taking hollow pride in denying them the chance to take the revenge he so desperately sought for himself, showing no mercy to who he maybe subconsciously believed was his greatest obstacle to true glory... ughhh, c!Quackity makes me so fucking SAD you guys-
Ahem. Anyway. Could he have forgiven himself? Would he have ever accepted the forgiveness of others? Perhaps, perhaps not. In two other lives, those he unknowingly gave a second chance to, he did. q!Quackity went on living for the sake of someone he loved, knowing he, too, was loved. k!Quackity went on living until he found justice, knowing he did not deserve to be wronged. c!Quackity... what other legacy would he have left? Does he know what he truly wanted, before all that fear and hunger for control tainted his heart? Was he content to know someone would remember him with a shred of fondness? That he left a single positive impact? That his life did have a purpose? What if he knew that even some of those with the most reason to hate him still wanted him to be better?
I suppose one might imagine an open-ended resolution, exchanging that last shot of c!Q's last life vanishing with him riding Boner/Ossium away from the explosion and into the sunset to build a better legacy. What would that new legacy look like? I have no idea. I don't think he knows yet, either. But we can pick our favorite based on the day. Time travel is real, and canon is made up. We can do what we want forever now. Enjoy.
...
He's not a fucking gringo, though. c!Quackity is Mexican, importantly so, full fucking stop. Stop infecting him with more Trump particles than he already had. "Oh great, a foreigner" honestly FUCK you Alex. 0/10 for that
#i have not written any dsmp analysis in so long#didn't even realize how much i missed this. how much this character really meant to me.#i feel... fuck. i wrote hundreds of words about how i feel and i still don't know how i feel.#thank you quackity from las nevadas... for rekindling my inner english major lmaooooooo#dsmp#c!quackity#tw suicide#analysis

i think about your dumb face (all the time) [dick grayson x reader]
hey, fam. sorry it's been a while! i moved halfway across the country for school in september and it's been a whirlwind since then. sorry for the radio silence.
please enjoy this, because That's So True by Gracie Abrams and i have been besties right now.
please excuse any grammatical/spelling mistakes because i just had to get this all out at once.
not very long on the word count.
Happy New Year! xoxo
+++
"Oh, baby," He says, lips pressed against your cheek, the barest of brushes, before he moves them to whisper in your ear. "There will nobody else for me. Only you."
You are trying to catch your breath, gasping for air. Your lungs are greedy for oxygen. But when Dick's mouth moves to cover yours again, your resign to your fate. If you die from asphyxiation because of Dick's kisses, at least it will be a pleasurable demise.
Your hands move to frame his face, palms to his cheeks, trying to move his as close as you can get him. Trying to erase the space that exists between the two of you. He knows exactly what he's doing, because your breath hitches.
You can feel his lips curl into a smile against your skin.
It's like you've been set on fire and are drowning at the same time.
Is this what being in love is like? It must be.
Dick is an all-consuming force, pulling you in like a ship to its harbor. Maybe the only way to be found is to get lost.
Your lungs beg: I can't breathe. Your heart pounds: I'm going to die. Your mind echoes: I love you, I love you, I love you. Even though you don't say it, you think he might know it. You think he has known it for a while now. He must, because he says everything else but those four words.
He pulls away, allowing a marginal second for you to suck in some sort of breath. Dick breathes out some words that don't quite register in the moment, but then he's back in with a second-wind of his own, and you are lost to an oblivion of your own making.
"You're the best thing that could have ever happened to me."
His words haunt you.
They are like an anchor when all you want to do is set sail.
They cause an angry flush to rise on your skin whenever you watch the local news channel for too long and are forced to remember them when you see his name pop up.
It's hard to escape the reality of your heartbreak when your ex-boyfriend is basically American Royalty. The only way you could escape his face appearing in your line of sight at least once a day is if your resigned your post with The Gotham Times, packed all your belongings, ghosted your closest friends, and moved to the Bush with absolutely no internet access whatsoever.
Best thing that could have ever happened to him your ass.
Not when you're seeing collages and reels and edits of him and his new supermodel girlfriend on TikTok. Not when pictures of them attending the most recent Wayne Foundation Charity Gala are plastered all across the Herald and TMZ. Not when her ad-sponsored pictures made it into your discovery page on Instagram. They even have a whole electronic billboard devoted to their newest photo shoot.
It is a visceral reaction every time you see his face across page of the newspaper, or on a screen as you sit on your regular bus route back to your apartment and look at the window. It would almost be a gift to be temporarily blind, you think, because you can't help but seeing him everywhere. When you walk down the street and look in Belly Burger's front window, you flashback to when you shared fries and a milkshake during your lunch for 15 minutes before he had to jet off. When you are sent to City Hall to cover a story about the Mayor, you remember him sneaking you into the coat closet during a fundraiser. You remember him talking you on your first walking tour of Cathedral Square, and your first kiss that followed, when you see it from the Gotham Gazette offices when you're on inter-paper stories.
He's everywhere, in everything.
You almost want to warn her. She balances the line between demure and edgy, somehow remaining in the middle. From the clips people have posted, she seems so sweet and kind. She seems to genuinely care about other people; she's not pretentious or self-absorbed. She is very aware of the social and financial privilege she has because of her work.
You almost like her and there's a part of you that wants to find her, grab her by the shoulders, and warn her that he will blindside her just like he did you.
There will come a point when he will cut his losses and walk away without looking back.
It's what he did that night, no tears in his eyes and without an ounce of regret.
He buried you and isn't sorry about it.
You almost want to warn her, but then you see red.
"Oh baby, there will nobody else for me. Only you." A cruel whisper echoes against your ear.
You see the knife in Dick's hand with your blood on it. You see his shadow moving away as he leaves you lying on the cold ground in a dark alleyway.
You wish he had never said that. You wish he would have cut the cord sooner. It might've made it hurt less if he had.
And now every time you see his face, the small bit of love still remaining is washed over by hatred. Fading pink colored over with bright red.
You want to know what he's thinking. Is she just a rebound? Is he having a hard time moving on to? When he was walking away from you, was he choking down his own tears? Is she just a fill in for the gap that was left when he separated himself from you?
But then you want to dial his phone number and scream. Yell. Get it all off your chest. Find his million dollar car and key your anguish and fury into the side of it. Tell him that his reckoning is coming.
One day he will see you and wish he stayed.
The bottle of rage in your chest might just shatter one day from the pressure your grief puts on it and rip your heart into a billion shreds. But for now, it's still beating (even though half of it is still beating for him).

Hi, could you please do one where Baldwins wife and Sybilla absolutely hate each other, complete rivals you know. The reader was a queen of another country who willingly married Baldwin, and once she arrives in Jerusalem men pay much more attention to her than Sybilla, and Sybilla is bitter and jealous and she was really mean to the reader, but the readers is NOT a passive person and fires back at her. Thanks! ❤️
♧ Family Drama - King Baldwin x Reader ♧
♧ Angst ♧
A/N: HELLO EVERYONE!!! Good lord this took a while to write, I really hope you enjoy this Anon💖. Thank you so much for the request!! As always, this is based on the film Kingdom Of Heaven not the real historical figures. Enjoy!
P.S. I spilt nail polish remover on my laptop while finishing this off and had a level 10 crashout. Pray for my computor guys 😭
Sybilla knew from the moment she laid eyes on her that y/n was trouble. From the moment she stepped one of her elegant, perfectly shaped feet from the carriage, all eyes fell on her.
Queen y/n/l/n.
A queen from a distant land who had come to marry her brother Baldwin. When Sybilla found out that her brother was being married off, she laughed. She did not mean to laugh, per say. It was only a reaction to what she believed to be a joke.
There was simply no way that any queen would be willing to give up her virginity and her dignity to wed a man plagued by such a horrible disease.
But she was wrong.
This beautiful, elegant woman was willing to give her brother a chance at a new life and rule by his side. Sybilla’s only explanation for the phenomenon was that she wanted Jerusalem for herself and her people after her brother's death.
Despite this, Baldwin was ecstatic the day she arrived. The two had been exchanging letters to one another for months now and he was beyond excited to finally meet his future queen.
The king went forward to greet y/n as she stepped down from the carriage.
“Hello” he said softly, barely being able to contain the smile on his face. Y/n grinned, “good evening your majesty” she replied with a small curtsey.
Sybilla cringed from her place behind Baldwin, perfectly keen to walk back into the castle and shut herself in her chambers until dinner was served.
“I must say my lord you are even more beautiful than I could have imagined” y/n stated with a smile as they began walking towards the castle.
Baldwin stuttered bashfully at her comment, “w-well thank you madame”.
No one had ever said such kind things to him before, he was truly lost for words. His bashfulness only made Sybilla cringe more. It was one thing that she wanted Jerusalem for her own after her brother's inevitable death, but to mock him with false flattery was another thing entirely.
Only it wasn't false. Y/n did indeed think he was beautiful. The way his silver mask shone in the sun, framing his stunning blue eyes was truly the most lovely thing she had ever seen.
She was not surprised or taken aback by his appearance at all, as he had described it to her through the letters, and he couldn't be more grateful.
The wedding was to be held tomorrow at dawn and the couple were beyond excited. When the small group of guards, Sybilla, the king and his soon to be queen entered the castle, they were informed dinner would be served in an hour.
Baldwin was delighted at this news since it meant that he and y/n could spend time talking and catching up before she had to go and sit with everyone else (since the king ate alone in his chambers).
“Shall we go to my rooms, y/n?” he asked, feeling almost shy at the simple question.
“Yes I would love to” she replied with a smile, Baldwin relaxed slightly at her acceptance.
“Before you go brother” Sybilla chimed in.
“I would like to have a word”.
“Oh of course, you go on ahead y/n” he replied, gesturing to a maid to accompany the queen.
Once she was out of sight and they were alone, Sybilla spoke.
“I don't trust her Baldwin” she said planley.
The king was shocked by her boldness.
“How do you mean sister?”
“I believe she only wishes to marry you so she can take Jerusalem… when you..” she caught herself.
Baldwin narrowed his eyes.
“Is it so difficult to believe, dear sister, that your ‘disgusting’ leperous brother has the capability to find a beautiful woman who will love him unconditionally?”
Sybilla’s breath caught in her throat.
“No- no not at all, I was simply-”
“that settles it then” he cut her off, turning to leave.
She didn't have the words to stop him.
------------------------------------------------------
Baldwin retreated to his chambers where he was greeted by the lovely sight of his soon to be wife, standing outside on the balcony.
She turned to look at him when she heard the door close, an expression of warmth on her beautiful face.
That wonderful smile melted his troubles in an instant, and he was brought back to reality: This perfect woman was going to be his wife.
The two talked and played several games of chess before dinner was served. She was even more amazing than he could have imagined.
Baldwin warned y/n of Sybilla before she went down to dinner.
“If she makes you uncomfortable at all, just leave the table and come get me okay?”.
Y/n agreed, but little did he know, she had no intention of anything getting between her and her Baldwin. She had fallen for the man hard, and nothing was going to keep him from her.
As y/n sat down at the table, she couldn't help but feel the eyes of men all over her.
She did her best to ignore it, but it was impossible to unsee.
The whispers of “is that the king's finance?”, “is she really going to marry him?” were deafening in her ears.
And she wasn't the only one who took notice of the prying eyes. Sybilla watched from across the table as eyes wandered to y/n. A pang of jealousy stung her as even her husband, Guy's, eyes landed on the woman's beautiful carved body.
After the food was bought out and a prayer had been said, Sybilla was the first to break the silence.
“So, y/n. Is there a particular reason you have decided to embarrass yourself and marry my brother or do you have a decent explanation?”. Thinking back on it, it may have been harsh but it needed to be said.
Y/n was taken aback by the question, but did not show it. Instead she took a deep breath and replied.
“So, Sybilla. Are you bitter and jealous because your leperous brother has found someone to love him more than your own husband loves you? Or are you just looking for a fight?” The room went silent and mouths fell agape.
Y/n just smiled and raised her eyebrows, expecting a reply from the princess.
“How dare you!” she stood, hitting her hands against the table.
“No! How dare you assume that just because your brother has an illness that it makes him unlovable” y/n yelled back, standing to meet Sybillas eye.
“I Baldwin told me what you said, that you believe I am only marrying into your family because I want your land. Well I have bad news for you, I am a queen of my own land, I have more than enough wealth on my own and need not anymore. I am marrying your brother because I love him. No more no less and nothing you do can stop that”.
Taking her seat again, y/n waved the other people at the table back to their own business.
They obliged and continued eating and Sybilla was left standing and looking like a fool as casual conversation resumed.
------------------------------------------------------
At the conclusion of dinner, y/n was looking forward to telling Baldwin what happened. How she had finally put Sybilla in her place.
He listened with surprise and excitement as y/n recounted the details from the dinner. By the end of the story, the pair were nearly howling with laughter at how the snooty princess had been pushed down.
“It serves her right, you know,” Baldwin exclaimed. “She has always tried to control my life, claiming that she was "protecting me" but in reality, she was just making me miserable and then avoiding me at all costs whenever something was going right, claiming that ‘she can't bear to look at me’. Maybe this will finally set her straight and she will learn to be more supportive".
Y/n sighed, wiping her eyes with the corner of a handkerchief, “we can only hope my dear. We can only hope”.
Baldwin thought for a moment.
“Y/n?” he said, suddenly becoming shy.
“Yes?” she said sweetly, making him feel guilty for asking.
“You.. you really do love me, yes?”
Y/n was shocked by how suddenly this came,
“yes of course. I fell in love with you before we even laid eyes on one another. And now you're here infront of me and I couldn't be happier” she said, placing a hand on his covered thigh gently.
The simple affection made the king's heart swell.
“Why do you doubt me?” she asked.
“I don't doubt you at all.. Just.. Sybilla must have gotten to me. I apologise” he put his head down in shame at being such a fool. Here was this lovely woman who loved him and he was about to go and mess it all up by doubting her-
His thoughts were cut short by a gentle hand coming to rest against his masked cheek, turning his head to face y/n.
“Don't ever apologise for needing to reassure my love. I completely understand but you must also understand that I really do love you. Nothing is going to change that. I couldn't care for the land that you rule. I would love you if you owned no land at all!, because I am in love with you” her kind eyes and her soft words were so lovely.
Baldwin choked back a small sob as tears formed in his eyes.
He nodded and did his best to fight the tears as y/n pulled him into a gentle embrace. It had been so long since he hugged anyone, he almost forgot what it felt like. It was so nice.
Y/n rubbed small circles onto his back as the tears flowed freely down his cheeks. He buried his masked face against her shoulder, quite content to remain in her arms for the rest of his life.
“Thank you” he whispered.
“I can't wait to marry you Baldwin” y/n said softly.
“Likewise, my love” he replied, closing his eyes and melting into her embrace.

The world if people stopped applying their understanding of "conservatism" and "religion/christianity" through a very modern, deeply American view onto Death Note (a manga from the Early-mid 2000s which is very much set in the cultural and societal context of early-mid 2000s Japan and all that entails):
#death note#fandom wank#i just be ramblin#listen I get it there's christian imagery#it's not bad to go over what that entails and whatnot. fun even#but beyond some potential parallels and symbols you have to understand that this is a japanese story set in japan in the early-mid 2000s#(and later an imagined 'future' from there)#you are not understanding the story if you're placing the characters on a political spectrum of beliefs based on what conservatism looks#like to you#you're superimposing your personal modern experiences and your country's societal/cultural state onto Death Note and it's characters and#calling it 'a reading'#I genuinely don't know how many more times I can endure people acting like Soichiro Yagami and Teru Mikami have the exact same set of#beliefs and religion and standards as a Southern USA republican/ultra conservative super christian#Or hell. People assuming that Light Yagami can't ever be relatable because someone like Light looks to them like a teacher's wet dream of a#perfect student who is always working hard and studying#when the truth is that while Light is the top student in Japan at one point‚ everything he is doing is within the realm of expectation for#'good' Japanese students. Not exceptional or supernatural or beyond dedicated. Good.#This is a manga where the time period and the setting and society at the time are deeply important#And you will never hope to have an understanding by forcing it to conform to what 'normal' society looks like to you#relating to character's experiences can go beyond relating and end up in territory where you're superimposing your experiences onto their#fictional reality and calling it canon#edit (because people put some good tags on this post): even though I was kind of vague about it this also goes for assuming that#christianity is the only possible religion any characters could be into#the options aren't either athiesm or christianity. there are other big religions in Japan#and in the same way Christianity colors American society and experiences even for people who have never practiced‚ so goes the way society#and people's general beliefs are influenced by Japan's major religions#the person in the tags who mentioned Shinto gets a cookie

every so often i will see a post from a leftist on this website that is so egregiously ableist that i remember that like. oh yeah the userbase of leftists on this website is violently anti-disabled people and will jump at any chance to demonize any of us for any reason. i just forget that fact because i'm extremely dedicated to curating my space
i'm paraphrasing here but i saw a post that said, "every time i see an American [disabled person] mention being scared about the election because they're afraid of losing their benefits i have to laugh. anybody who wants blood-soaked money from the US government deserves to starve" which. like. goodness that's a lot to unpack. i think we should burn the whole suitcase instead !
#i inserted [disabled person] because they used a fucking slur instead and i didn't want that in my post#like i feel like there should be room for disabled people like me whose lives literally entirely depend on accessing said >#> extremely limited benefits in conversations about whether voting in this election makes you complicit in genocide#which like! i do understand. i do. it's nauseating to think about what this shit ass country is doing. it's horrific. i do not blame anyone#> for not wanting to be a part of that. *and* i am also terrified for my own life because i remember the first time trump won it suddenly >#> became IMPOSSIBLE for ANYONE to get on benefits. EVER. and so many disabled ppl i know went to renew benefits theyd had for decades >#> just to be denied. one of whom was a below-the-neck paraplegic. he died because he lost those benefits!!! because trump won#i really do understand why people dont feel right voting for harris. or why they don't vote at all. i truly do. but holy shit i am so scare#and yes! i am aware that people in palestine and gaza are suffering so much worse. and i wish i could change that#but every single person in power in the US is pro-israel and eagerly drinking the anti-palestine kool-aid. no matter who wins >#> things will not change in that part of the world. and it is infuriating. when the revolution comes this will change. but it hasnt.#the revolution will not save me as a physically disabled person. it will not save any of us. we do not matter to leftists. i am sorry but >#> this is the one thing i have learned after being in leftist spaces for over 10 years. and posts like the one i mentioned prove it#so i am very sorry. i really am. for being physically disabled. but i cannot survive another 4 years relying on my parents for everything#if trump wins i will be killing myself. this is a promise. i cannot do that again#i know it makes me a bad person to be afraid that harris will lose. but people on the left already think i'm a bad person for being disable#i want the genocide to stop. i absolutely do. i also want to survive. i am terrified that the US leftists will sacrifice disabled people#like me so they can feel good about being put in a real life trolley situation#again. im sorry. im so fucking sorry. i wish i was a better person. i wish i was able to give more. i know that if i was just a good#person i would be able to have a job and give to every palestinian gofundme on my dash. i would be able to do more than my daily clicks >#> and reaching out and calling representatives that don't care. if i was a good person i would be able to convince my parents that z*onism>#is deeply fucking racist. and that israel is wildly racist and killing palestinians for fun. if i was a good person i would be able to make#>them leftists too. im sorry. im sorry. im sorry im not good enough. im sorry that im scared. im so scared and it's not right for me to be#when so much worse is going on because of this countrys bloodlust. im sorry that im benefiting from being born here i dont want to be#im sorry for not having any other options. if i was a good person i know i would have them. im sorry. god im sorry im so fucking sorry

the funniest thing about having a cool car is that middle-aged men will just come up and talk to you in parking lots but in a way where you feel completely safe. the most i have ever felt perceived as an equal human by strange men interacting with me unprompted. they are blinded by the car and i am no longer "woman" i am just "owner of this cool shiny car which i must compliment"
#i don't personally think it looks that good but it has a very masculine look and we were some of the first to get that model in the country#so they were all so excited to see this car they had read/heard about!! stars in their eyes#now that it is more common it doesn't happen as often but there was a time where i couldn't go shopping#without having to small-talk with some guy about the car while loading my groceries#like it's a nice car but if you follow me you probably know i'm more into vintage jags (as if i could ever afford one)#bought this for the comfort and because it's easy to drive when you commute for 3 hours several times a week not for the looks#but something about it apparently appeals very much to this demographic#🐭📓

#okay no it's not the darkness getting to me there is a real life thing occupying a lot of my brain space#and idk if there's anything to be gained by speaking it out loud into the void but at the moment it's the only thing i Can do#i don't even have to click the 'post' button if i don't want to#but yeah. yesterday got the news that my mom's husband is dying. had a surprise heart attack and he's not gonna make it#just feels super fucking weird#personally i never really liked him at all so it's not like i myself necessarily have to grieve. never was that close with him#but like. oof this is going to be hard for my mom. and i'm super worried about how she's going to survive#but there's nothing to DO about it really. she wanted to have some space to come to terms with this on her own#and she has a strong support network of friends in her city. while i'm on the other side of the country#and don't even know what i could do to help if i was closer to her. i just. like. what can you even do in a situation like this?#just feels weird to Not do anything when i know how huge of an impact this will make for her entire life#she'll probably have to move to a different place too#and there are people there to help her. people with more life experience. people who probably know more about grief than i do#i just. i have no idea how one handles something like this. except for being there for her when asked#do eldest daughters have some sort of universal responsibilities that i'm just not aware of?#it feels kinda horrible how this is constantly circling back to what can *I* do and what must *I* do. how *I* feel#i'd never ever ever make things this much about me in any other setting than my own tumblr blog. in a tag whisper i'm not sure i'll post#but yeah all of this is eating my brain in a very weird way. an odd sort of limbo where it feels like there should be something here#it'd certainly be easier if i had any sort of relationship with the dead person myself. if i had something to grieve myself#now there's just a feeling that something Should be here to feel. and the knowledge of how hard this must be for my mom#ahhhhh idk none of this makes any sense i'm just speaking in circles and everything feels bad#it's bad and horrible and i don't know how to process any of this and i'm stuck in my brain and can't DO anything#there's nothing i can do to help my mom at this exact moment when she wants to be left alone with her thoughts#and i can't do anything else either because all of this feels like a heavy black cloud fogging up my brain#can't concentrate on anything at all today#not fun. not cool#sussitalk

the whole 'there are not very many Great Causes worth fighting for these days' from Julian scanned as WAY more out of touch than the moon landing thing for me the first time i read tsh
#like to the point of it being actively jarring when i got to him saying that#the secret history#'they landed on the moon??' well okay i guess it's not really their area#and they've been really out of touch with the news since it's also not really their area + they've been#off to the woods/a country house/etc and getting very drunk and killing deer and also people#i don't remember the exact dates re the moonlanding + the events of the book but like.#Sure. that's probably fair or at least kind of understandable#that could Feasably Happen On Accident at least#but julians like 'there isn't much worth fighting for these days' and um.#if you pay attention to literally anything happening in the world at any given moment at all. ever.#....what? literally what do you mean by this?#there have always been So So many Great Causes that people are dying for all the time constantly forever#and even if you've somehow managed to comoletely block out literally every piece of news/political development/etc#that's not really a reason to assume there Aren't. that's a reason to go like. well if there are any Great Causes left today then#I don't know about them. and even if we assume he's defining what makes a cause worth fighting for by classical values#and saying that that means for example that he wouldn't necessarily think of say the civil rights movement or liberatory movements etc#as fitting (which i think is also probably debatable- it comes to mind that the athenians valued (their own) freedom. political engagement#was valued but only the right kind from the right people. etc. what i'm saying is that#no i don't think they actually fit what julian would be thinking of as the classical mind's* idea of a great cause worth dying for#but also you could debate that/frame things differently/etc (*presumably there is a more particular subset of the population he has in mind#than just 'classical' or 'greek' in actuality. like. specifically those from whom we having writing/would have citizenship/etc.))#i'm certain there are plenty of arguments to be made. like plenty of people are fighting for various countries#it's not like wars or empires have stopped existing or other myriad conflicts have stopped existing#also in typing this i've realised he was maybe forshadowing henry's death#and now i need to go look up the exact quote and make another post i guess.#(also disclaimer that i'm aware i've phrased a lot of this clumsily. it is midnight these are the tags of a tumblr post and i am not sober.)#anyway to rephrase my initial point i just think with the moon landing thing that's One major event you missed.#if you're saying that there are No Great Causes Worth Fighting/Dying For (with the understanding that you think those are a thing#that can exist) then i think maybe you managed to skip out on hearing about significantly more#than just the one major event. that's much harder to manage i would think
