i think we forget just how shocking the reveal that present day getou is kenjaku was. and, by extension, just how unprecedented gojo revealing kenjaku to the audience was.

everyone who isn't in the know after the shibuya incident would always refer to kenjaku as getou and it would drive me crazy. i forget that, after jjk0 and hidden inventory, i also fully believed that was getou. hell, mahito and the curses believe he's getou.

and i've only rethought it recently because im watching jjk with a friend who knows nothing about the show or manga. after we watched hidden inventory and jjk0 i was surprised by how unaffected he was by getou's part of the story.

but he doesn't see getou the same as i do because kenjaku's reveal re contextualises getou's whole role. to my friend, getou's the current day villain like he was in jjk0, and he's alive, with jjk being far enough removed from reality that most viewers just assume getou is alive.

but finding out about kenjaku reveals that getou isn't the antagonist of the story, he was dead before it even started. he's not the current day villain, he's a ghost haunting the narrative. and i think that makes jjk0 feel so much more final.

in hidden inventory you're not worried about gojo because you know he's alive in present day, and i think it's a similar situation with getou, the viewer thinks jjk0 is just another chapter, when really it's a failure of everything getou wanted. and ultimately, it's gojo that set the record straight on getou's story, because no one else could have.

the riddle ship trifecta...

i enjoy them bc i think riddle really needs a calm presence in his life that makes him feel like he can act in ways he never had the freedom to do before, without feeling judged or made fun of. whether that is acting childish and silly or just expressing emotion freely. he's obviously really sensitive to being teased so he needs someone who is ok with that and just finds joy in his joy.

i relate to this a lot bc i myself am a very sensitive person, and get emotional really easy but im also very cynical and dry, so i think ppl see that contrast and find it funny. which is fine, but i get hurt or annoyed really easily by teasing bc i think what i really want is for someone to see how easily i get emotional (like crying at almost every movie i watch) and rather than seeing it as smth weird and funny, they recognize my empathy as something good. i want someone to see the value and worth in my emotions, no matter how trivial they seem.

and i think riddle needs that too. deuce isnt super smart but i think he's really earnest and riddle would appreciate that about him. he shows a lot of self awareness in recognizing how his past actions hurt his mom, and realizing he needs to be proactive if he wants to be a better person. very few ppl are willing to admit when they are the problem. he's just a very soft guy, but like, passionately soft. he wants so bad to be good. and i think he would want so badly for riddle to be happy, it would become really important to him just like his mom's happiness.

malleus is super honest about his intentions, which i think riddle needs bc his lack of social skills leave him anxious. he probably would get too frustrated having to play games and guess feelings. malleus just has a super calming presence and riddle needs that so bad. i think they are both pretty awkward bc of their upbringing so maybe they could find comfort in each other, knowing there's no judgement.

azul is none of these things lol 😂 i do NOT think these 2 would be a perfect healthy couple but i enjoy their dynamic. riddle is sensitive ofc but hes also super smart which is why i like the thought of them together. the two top students, not really in a competitive way, more like they recognize each other's weaknesses but also highly respect each other. to the point that they wouldnt ever make a move against the other. i could see them having a more loving relationship but in my mind they are more like a power couple lmao. like two powerhouses joining forces. i do think seeing riddle trying to overcome his own trauma and be a nicer person could inspire azul to do smth similar, realizing that if he likes and respects riddle, there must be some value in kindness without reward.

none of these would be canon in the AT au unfortunately, at least not in my mind (you can do whatever you like with it tho, it also doesnt mean i wont still talk/draw about it). there would definitely still be interactions among them with plenty of room for interpretation. obviously the most between deuce and riddle bc they are both HL.

i could see an episode where riddle recruits deuce to help him repair one of the elephant guardians (since deuce is good at repairing stuff) and they become closer. bc deuce used to get up to a lot of trouble he also has a lot knowledge of some of the rougher parts of the kingdom (im referring to deuces former crew as the spoiled fruit gang) and probably accompanies riddle when he needs to go there. riddle might sometimes go to deuce for advice on his relationship w his mother, since deuce is close w his mom. it would be cute if deuces mom came to really adore riddle and gave him a lot of the experiences he didnt get w his own mother.

Ever since young, beta Riddle is just as isolated as canon Riddle. Only the reason his so isolated is because his homeschooled by a hired teacher. His mother is always away busy with work so she never had much time for him. She spoils him with toys and gifts he wants to keep him happy but never bothered making time to give him what he needs. I imagined beta Riddle as a child used to be as hardworking at canon Riddle but overtime when he realized his efforts were only glossed over by his mom, he slowly starts to despise studying. Its like Leona's case where, he knows his mom wont even celebrate with him no matter how many A's he filled up his exams.

Might as well stop trying and seek attention elsewhere which is why when he came to NRC, the first time he ever get a chance to be in a crowd or what was considered public. He probs took the role as dorm leader of Heartslabyul because the old leader was a sticker for rules which is why it was so easy to grab that position when you can just cheat. Besides.. it doesnt seem the dorm members care much for these rules. Just break them all and call it a day.

Yes he has a chance to be with Trey and Chen'ya but they feel more like servants to him then friends. Especially Trey. But what can they do? They cant tell if Riddle cares for them enough to listen to them. And besides, Chen'ya probably gets a kick in making Riddle mad and flustered while Trey is just the 'I dont get paid enough for this shit—' babysitter. We already know Trey didnt bother stepping up to Riddle and smack some sense into him til he OB, tf is my baker boi gonna do with this bratty boi? Just let the man bake his tarts and be a malewife. She's known for being a beauty and a courteous lady from a quite influential house. Both her parents and Lyonel are very satisfied with this match. She vaguely recollects meeting Harwin at tourneys and feasts when she was younger but she doesnt remember him much. Part of her is relieved it's not some decrepit lord, but it's not exactly how she imagined her future.

Both her and Harwin are highkey relieved when she arrives in Kings Landing. She admits (to herself only of course) he's easy on the eyes and he's happy to see that once a adorable girl grown to be a beauty.

She doesnt trust men, especially the cunning lords and their up to no good sons and the red keep atmospehere makes her shy. Harwin notices that quickly and tries to be very protective of her (which she appreciates, only an idiot would want to start shit with mr. Breakbones so she knows she's safe).

The wedding is approaching and since they're friendly she finds courage to open up about her fears of the bedding ceremony. Harwin supresses a little laugh (lmao his male brain didnt even think about such issue) but reassures her that he would spare her such ordeal. He jokes he would fight any men who would object, even the king himself. She rewards him with a quick, shy kiss. He have to fight the urge to grab her and kiss her more inaprropriately (and then some), but he resists.

After the wedding they go to their chambers, both drunk and laughing, they spend the rest of the night drinking some more and gossiping about their guests. Harwin wont pressure her since he feels she's not exactly ready. She's not cold though, and they get on very well. The whole thing entices him and he is determined to win her over completely. He spoils her with jewelry, pretty dresses, and romantic gestures.

Not so long after the wedding the prying ladies of the court ask her how is ser Breakbones in bed, they dying to know. She hits them with "haha you know same old, same old, you know the drill girls" *laughs nervously internally* A big mouthed lady is like hmm I would like to know more, maybe I should try to seduce him and see for myself. Lady Strong and the girls exchange amused looks like okay delulu you wish.

She ponders about this a few days though. One night she helps herself with liquid courage a little and waits until her husband comes back from his duties. She puts on her most revealing night gown and some jewelry he gifted her. His eyes are wide open as he enters the bedroom. She doesnt have to tell him twice. Long story short they go all night and both are not in the mood to leave their chambers for the next few days. When a city watch soldier looks for his commander he just barks through the closed doors that his wife is not feeling that good and she needs his attention. He orders him to delegate his duties for his next in command till he returns.

When lady Strong leaves their quarters she literally glows and is in exceptionally good mood. When everyone asks her if she feels alright so soon, she answers she was never better and her husbands' care helped a lot. They've become more open with displays of affection and soon the Strongs are the it couple of the Red Keep :)

I hate non-poly relationship that's so poly coded only for the author to choose a non-poly ending between a man and a woman. Feels so?? Questionable. Now, Kai? even less so. If i have to rank, michael > damon / will > kai.

I am not convinced that will, or any of the horsemen would choose their women first, and this lack of a firm HEA was what made me not able to enjoy devils night series as a whole 😭 i didnt feel liek this when i read other dark romance series, like the l.o.r.d.s. because it was clear to me that each couple were ONLY made for each other. i've also been spoiled by contemporary romances that have HEA endings for hears, that when i did read dn, i was like? Huh? That was it? And just like the previous anon, i found myself asking, why is this alex still here? Why was emmy's ending like that? Why was winter's man looking like he's pining for his bff or wanting to jump into a poly relay? Will winter have to share him? Why was banks' man checking out rika? Why was there still tension between them in conclave? Why was rika's man like THAT? But ngl, by the end of fire night, i dont get these vibes from michael, which was surprising because he's the least fav of the series... I feel so bad for these fmcs, but then they're just fictional characters, and they also choose to be in relationships with these mmcs themselves, so what was even the point of my worry? Ahhg! Idkidk

Side note, damon's book felt so unromantic to me because of this, and i wished winter had a better storyline and love story where her man was just focusing on her and not trying to bring eberyone in their relationship, like arion, banks, rika, will etc. I can't stand kill switch because of that. Felt like damon was cheatinh on her throughout the whole book. I hate it when mmc have other thoughts about OW, which was why i also didnt like will and kai as much. In nightfall, i knew because pd fucked up with the plot and characters, but i didnt feel like pd f up kill switch, but damon's character in general felt really unromantic for a dark erotica/ romance hero whoks supposed to be possessive obsessive non-sharing heroes, like the rina kent, hd carlton, shantel tessier, emily mcintire heroes. i cant root for him or the mmcs of this series because of that 🫠 os this just a pd thing or something? If she asked on a random Tuesday afternoon?

No. Probably not.

There would have to be something happening that’s caused her to make that demand. Like. . . it can’t just be like the worm test, you know? “Would you still love you me if I were a worm?” / “Would you leave your all your favorite people for me if I asked?”

He'd be like, Emmy, shut up, drink your drink, and stop coming up with make believe scenarios (They'd banter about it for hours, though).

But if there was a legit reason she was asking, I think Will is more than likely to take Emory’s side. Emory doesn’t typically make a big deal out of small things, so if she’s making a big deal out of something, it’s actually huge. Along with that, he knows how it is to be without her, and I can't see him going back to that again. Not willingly. He needs to be the one she holds on to. He's never served that purpose for anyone else.

As an example, the Damon and Emory at the gazebo scene: Emory says she has to tell Will what happened the night she helped him bury Natalya, and Damon response that Will’s going to kill him (or something like that). It’s clear that this issue isn’t even that big of an issue anymore, but the very fact that Damon put Emory at risk years ago and keep it a secret from him is still enough to piss Will off.

Unless she gets brainwashed or otherwise manipulated into betraying them, Will is always going to choose Emory over them. Just because we didn’t get the scene doesn’t mean there isn’t a “She is everything” moment. Although, depending on how you look at it, the fact that Will was down bad (crying at the gym🎶🎶) for literally all of the series because he didn’t have Emory sort of indicates who he’s capable of not living without. It was kind of a silent "she is everything".

If you’re haunted about it, I can’t help you. I’m just words on a screen, after all.

It's an assumption that Emory still feels uncomfortable about Will’s past after she “comes into her own” on the train. You can see the train scene however you want – I personally detest it, and feel there were much better ways to communicate whatever Emory was supposed to be going through at the moment. However, I think it's pretty clear the scene was supposed to mark a change within Emory. Would a conversation between the two of them been more satisfying for readers? Probably. Was it something that the characters needed though? Was it something that Emory needed? I don't think so.

I see Emory no longer caring that he’s been “on top of half the graduating class”, or ever thinking that he’ll leave her for Alex in a heartbeat. These things just don’t matter anymore. They’re small issues that she has the confidence to handle if they come up, but she’s not going to waste her time worrying about them. Not when she as a life to live, finally being happy with Will.

Those conversations happened between Rika and Michael. Rika had to have the “You won’t be sleeping with anyone else, right?” talk with Michael, which he didn’t answer because he was fully planning on sleeping with other girls while waiting for her to turn 18. Again later, she had to tell him she doesn’t like being followed, or told where to go, or that she’s expected to stay home, waiting for him to come back.

Will isn’t Michael, though. And he made clear that if she gave him half a chance, he was going to be exclusive. That’s what he wanted. Additionally, Will doesn’t have any expectations of Emory’s behavior, other than she's exclusive to him as well (you'll be the mother to my children, sit at my table, warm my bed - but of course, this is also where he wants to be: the father to her children, giving her a home to live in, being in her bed). She runs this show, and he loves that. More importantly, she knows that. All he expects of her is to be happy.

At the same time, we got the "She is everything" scene from Michael because there was miscommunication between him and Kai. I don't think there's any confusion from the guys what position she takes in Will's life by the time Will and Emory are married. As long as she let's him stay, she'll be number one.

But, of course, I'm used to shipping couples that were never canon, so then maybe I'm off in an OTP happiness bubble.

I think this may be the issue some readers are having. Because what do you mean “non-sharing”? There was never the promise of no-sharing at any part of DN. Every book had sharing. Every book was going to have sharing, regardless if it fit into the plot or not.

And while I don’t consider the rikamichaelkaibanks bonus scene to be canon because PD didn’t even really write it, they just thought about it, it’s a clear indicator that whatever poly situation they’ve got going on is something the characters enjoy. If you don’t enjoy it as a reader, that’s one thing, but it’s not the author’s responsibility to write something you enjoy. The main responsibilty an author has is to write something that's true to them. And edit. Please, edit.

And I don’t say all this to mean that you’re wrong in any way.

DN doesn’t follow a lot of the trends. It adds different twists to common trends, which can be misleading for people who are reading based on tropes. Sometimes I feel that PD is trying to be too edgy and it falls flat and is cringe. I feel that sometimes PD missed the mark in executing their otherwise very good ideas because they were so focused on other things. It’s not a series that's going to work for everyone.

Based on everything I’ve read/seen/heard, I can tell that PD is not an author for me. There were so many things about this series that didn’t work for me, but the few things that did really caught me, and those are the things I like to think about. Everything else I headcanon my way around.

But I am sorry the series had such a bad reaction for you. Since reading is supposed to be an enjoyable past time, I hate the idea that you spent so much time reading something you couldn't enjoy. I hope whatever you move on to next is better!

the order is: the cruel prince, the wicked king, the queen of nothing, stolen heir (the new book) but there are also books you can read in between (that i havent read myself)

by far the best book series ive read, i would sell my soul to read it again for the first time

circe - madelline miller

this is a story about circe, a godess (i think) from greek myth. the writing was beautiful, but since its myth, if youre not interested i dont reccomend

i'm actually not sure what category this falls into.

mc has an accident and ends up at a library at exactly midnight, where the weird librarian tells her that this library is her life (of sorts). basically each book in the library is how her life couldve been like based on some decisions she made

and she keeps going to these other versions of her life by reading the books until she realizes hey, she wants to live, and goes back to her original life

not my favorite, but still an okay one

dune - frank herbert

this is a classic, but it was really good

i dont remember the details, all i really remember was that i had sth for the mc

fr tho its really good, give it a go if long books dont intimidate you

this book is so well written istg

mc is a child, first of all. and i dont mean like a teen i mean shes 8 max, shes a literal child but its okay bc there isnt that much action in this one

the main idea of the book is about how precious time is, but its told through such an interesting way. there are time thieves that steal other people's time to live, making it look like theyre helping people save time on mundane things, and momo stops them (not in an insane way i promise)

the secret garden - frances hodgson burnett

this is a classic, but dont let that fool you this is a really well written book

this one has almost no action in it btw

mc is also a child here (shes maybe 12 at most), she moves into the mansion of her uncle after her family dies where she starts to behave like an actual child instead of some spoiled princess/lh

so one day while going on a stroll in the garden area (?) bc no one is there to take care of her now, she finds a secret garden and decides hey since no one seems to care for this garden, this is mine now

also there are other children that she befriends along the way that help her w the garden

I WAS LIKE. PRETTY FUCKED UP ???? In the dsmp, after I got my injury to my eye/face, I had to take a couple weeks at least to be able to properly navigate again. Karl and Sapnap forced me into using a cane, which was something I very much needed if I didn’t want to walk into something or just fall over-

And just the eye thing in general messed me up permanently ??? Like I stopped using my cane and was okay most of the time without it - but my vision was really fucked and I couldn’t read cursive at all and needed bigger writing on documents to be able to read them, but the dsmp wasn’t a very accessible space so I just sucked it up and dealt with it.

I even learned braille because of it !!! Sam taught me braille !!! Sam also taught me some basic ASL and Foolish taught me more in depth ASL.

I remember Wil getting bad back pains and just aches after they got revived. I think it was just a side effect they had to deal with after it all. We couldn’t do much to help it, but I always made sure to give them a heating pad and some good pillows !!

Speaking of - I believe both me and Wil had chronic fatigue ? I think I just had it while Wil got it as a side effect from getting revived - either way it SUCKED

once again you have something special about names and looking back to the series name I have a feeling there will be moments where the choice between formal name and nickname will be important

(the lengths stories in english have to go to show the border between formal/informal addressing /hj, names have a different beat to them but the technique is actually similar

its a bit sad actually, I feel like so many english texts could go bonkers if "thou" and "ye" still existed and didnt get merged into you)

I mean we already saw something similar in the prequel with phil calling wilbur wilum to show importance of the situation

gotta say, the importance of names is always a bit different and never boring and I love it

origins characters and character traits oh my that opens up so many possibilities i love the sound of this

also just the phil we see in the prequel has some "harsh" qualities, setting kids up against each other which fits o!phil much more than c!phil, so many new traits to play with

but yeah there's always going to be an element of importance given to names in a fic like this. like, it's one of my favorite tropes to use. it definitely isn't going to have the same weight as names in glass and stars did, but it'll be there for sure.

you get it though. like, we would benefit SO much if we still used thou and ye because we could go insane in the membrane with the way we write interactions between characters. but alas i just have to create convoluted worldbuilding rules about the roles of names to get my point across instead...

and all the groups are pretty complicated politics wise so its a lot to untangle but the one thing i DO want is to burn the legion to the ground im so sick of their assassins and their shitty self righteous attitudes and their misogyny and also, like, they crucify and rape people. and then have the audacity to claim moral superiority and pretend they’re more civilized than everyone else? they need to Go

Jolt

Jolt has crippling anxiety. He hides it really well under a very thick layering of anger, sarcasm and apathy, but once it's stripped away he'd likely be prone to regular panic attacks.

Also, He's suprisingly great with kids. He's a great teacher and mentor, having a lot of expericence on his resume; and in 'pre-war' or 'irl' situation he'd probably have become a teacher or guideance councelor.

I have had Jolt in many AU's. He's been half dragon demon, a ghost, a zombue ghost, and also a cyberpunk mercenary. so i cant really think of many more AU's id like to put him in. ( this goes for all of them, rikki having had the least and jolt the most. Bux and Keres are actually split from the same oc, and you can see various peices of the them throughout the (many) years, if I could find my old sketchbooks.)

Cold and unfeeling. He wants to be preceived as a force to not to be reckoned with, something not to fuck with. He'd like his enimies and oppenents to be near pissing themselves at the sight of him.

If his parents never left the farm, or stayed in Arizona with the NCR, He likely would have stayed a farmhand, or possibly a trader. He would have probably lived a suprisingly normal life.

If he'd stayed with his siblings ( i cant spoil to much can I?) he'd still be with them, and again, would have had a surprisingly normal life with a slightly less traumatic past.

Bux

Bux is pretty open about all of his feelings, but he's got a very bitter side to him. he puts out a stupid goofy manic persona but he's very bitter and angry. maybe not the most hidden thing, I guess? but it's a very toxic, seething bitterness that if he didnt have any support or crutch would likely make Jolt's bitter persona look silly.

same again. I even made him an alien, twice. I'd say irl for him but ngl i basically ripped myself in half to make jolt and bux, so his irl life is basically just… my own… (farm, abusive parents, running away, drugs, mental health issues, its not really fun irl i guess?)

Depends on the person, he likes to be seen as a goofy funny guy to people he likes, but to people he doesnt he'd rather … not be seen by them.

When his parents divorced, (this comes up pretty early on so it's not much of a spoiler) he'd either have lived a normal life or still ended up with Keres and the others if his mother had taken him with her. ( btw by normal i mean as normal for that environment as possible)

Keres

Keres has the least amount of trauma of the enitre group. They still struggle, however. (lmao, me, with untraumatized characters? never.) hwoever, they have the healthiest coping mechanism, facing this stuff head on.

Keres never technically had a cyberpunk phase, nor a ghost phase. they were still a demon, when i split them and bux apart, and then later when i fused them back together ( and apart again) they remained the same. I'd love to speculate on an irl version of them though.

as a teacher or mentor, a guide. Alternatively, as an equal.

Keres' and Rikki's backstory are both pretty still un talked about by me, but without spoiling anything, Keres would have likely become a leader of their group. Their life would have still likely mimicked what it is now just more calm. (they kinda end up the same in every path.)

Rikki

this poor baby where to start? genuinly the most trauma of the entire group. (haha im so fuckin not sorry) she's the only one who genuinly uses drugs to medicate herself and not just to get high. She can't handle being cornered, confrontation, correction, it'll break her.

But she's also a suprising confidant. Her own pain makes her easy to vent to, and she'd keep any secret completely under lock and key.

10: same again. rikki was a ghost, demon, vampire, and while she was never technically made into a cyberpunky character i have others that kinda fill her place. still would like to see an offical version now. im not good with au's i guess?

14: happy and friendly. healthy, okay, fine, all good, nothing wrong.

If not for the events that led to her being where she is now she'd be dead. everyone else is on a 'dark' version of their own paths in this story. Rikki is on the best path her life could have gone.
