not me getting irrationally frustrated with this eternal pissing contest between Brotherhood and '03 that somehow still seems to happen even though both shows can legally drink alcohol in Germany by now.

(i wanted to say "can drive a car" but, no, I refuse to use a silly little US-centric comparison for this)

They both have pros and cons. They both have strengths and weaknesses. They are not interchangeable and, to be honest, they are such deeply different stories it feels like an insult to constantly compare them to each other.

OF COURSE you're going to hate Brotherhood, if you expect it to be simply a "remastered" of '03 - '03 is a TRAGEDY and it sets itself up as a tragedy from the very first episode on! I mean, ALPHONSE ELRIC IS OUR NARRATOR! Is there anything more ominous than that? Edward Elric is inherently tragic in '03. Even when he's being silly, everything he does is tinged in grey sadness and a heavy cloud of "doomed" hanging over his head.

If you know this character - if you LOVE this character - of course Brotherhood is gonna disappoint the fuck out of you. Because Brotherhood is the OPPOSITE of a tragedy. It is a story about hope. About if enough people believe in the good of humanity, maybe we can actually change the course of history and create something hopeful.

If the story of '03 is "the path to hell is paved in good intentions" then Brotherhood is all about breaking the cycle of violence.

Neither of these concepts is inherently better or worse than the other. But you cannot compare them. Not really.

You cannot look at a tragedy and go "why is nobody laughing? why are they dying? why are they losing hope?" when all of these things are written into the foundation of the story itself.

AND

just as importantly. You cannot look at a story about hope and go "but why aren't the consequences more dire? why are two opposing forces fighting alongside each other? why are we having a laugh if the world is ending?" - when the answer to that question is: to create a better world you first have to dream of one.

You cannot expect Brotherhood to deal with the Ishvalen genocide to the degree of gruesomeness that '03 does (or with the degree of justified rage by Scar) if Brotherhood is fundamentally a story about breaking the circle of violence even when it fucking sucks. I am not saying Brotherhood couldn't have handled it better in parts (never adapted manga chapters, my beloved) but it just fundamentally isn't a story about a justified Ishvalen survivor trying to enact large scale revenge on the Amestrian military - that's '03.

And if you're looking for a darker look at militarism and imperialism (that doesn't try to offer you a idealistic hopeful ending) there is an entire 51 episode show about that! But don't go and complain when that show dares to end in tragedy. Don't complain if there isn't a happy ending, or if all your heroes end up deeply tragically sad and alone.

You can't compare apple and oranges, and you can't really compare Brotherhood and '03 - so any attempt at calling on better than the other kind of falls short.

"'03 is better!" - yeah, a better tragedy. A more realistic look at Ishval. A darker tale about personal responsibility and consequences. And the homunculi are just a touch more fucked up.

"Brotherhood is better!" - It certainly has more in-depth world building! And a very well-rounded ending. It certainly is a better story about hope. About coming together.

But they're not the same story. So, really, they shouldn't be treated as such.

Danse has unintentional thirst traps. He talks about power armor and the Brotherhood of Steel but also posts workouts. These are what get the most attention out of everything he posts. The BookTok girlies find him and all hell breaks loose in the comment sections. He responds to this with, "Thank you, civilians. I am not sure what you mean, but I am glad you are supporting the Brotherhood of Steel by being on my page. Thank you for your enthusiasm for our righteous cause. Ad victorium." People armchair diagnose him as autistic.

Deacon does "GRWM as i tell you about the time i ______" videos where each day he looks completely different and you can never tell if he's telling the truth or not. He also does head shaving videos that double as story times or opinion pieces. You can't tell if those are true or not either.

Dogmeat has a viral account followed by millions. Get's a lot of "I can't imagine liking this guy" comments with the op replying to their own comment with "anymore than I already do. Huge fan!"

Hancock does subtle cheeky thirst traps and dance challenges. This entire post was inspired by the FACT that Hancock would participate in the brat summer trend and would do the Apple dance with Fahrenheit filming it. He also tells stories, mostly of him being high. He gets a lot of requests to cosplay Deadpool.

MacCready has a lot of things he does. Some videos are sniper trick shots, some are Grognak the Barbarian yapping (he does short lore deep dives when he can), and some are about being a young single dad. She uses the trend of an insane video, like someone falling badly on the ground or getting splashed with water, and stitches it to look like a seamless transition of her rolling from the fall or being splashed to start talking about her news stories. It gets traction so she continues.

Porter Gage has a side gig of running TikTok accounts for different people. Gets the money, doesn't get the backlash when they get canceled for racism or worker exploitation.

Preston has an account dedicated to charity work and social activism. He makes sure to highlight organizations he feels are doing the world a service and regularly has fundraisers. He's well-known for always sharing content from people in dire situations and raising money for them. Has a master document of Go Fund Me pages and vets every one of them.

Strong has a lot of those unintentional boomer tiktoks that are 1 second long and he's just looking at the screen in confusion.

"The Flower that Blooms in Adveristy Is the Most Rare and Beautiful of Them All": A Brief Amalia Analysis

I've been meaning to talk about this scene since the episode premiered, as I find it perfectly encapsulates Amalia's character and her development.

On the one hand, we have the fact that she's long outgrown the pampered, sheltered princess archetype she was introduced as and become far more mature and multi-faceted.

Over the course of the show, we've seen how Amalia evolved from a girl who ran away from her responsibilities because she felt stifled in her own home after her mother's passing, to a girl whose reason to break the rules was the sake of her kingdom, determined to save it from Nox. To the point she eventually grew into the Sadida Queen mantle and was ready to do whatever it took to ensure her kingdom's safety and well-being, from accepting to marry a stranger, to finally stepping up to the challenge and ascending to the throne to guide her troops to victory despite having just lost her brother and such heavy burden thrusted upon her.

All the while dealing with her own trauma, heartbreak and desires as she watched her father wither away, her best friend since childhood was far away living her own life, Armand and Aurora tried to pressure her into marrying, she was manipulated by Oropo into almost abandoning Yugo, and she likewise suffered because she couldn't be with the man she loved despite both of them wanting nothing more.

And on the other hand, that scene also shows how, while not necessarily the most powerful member of the Brotherhood of the Tofu, Amalia's versatility is second only to Yugo and maybe Adamaï's, as well as it once again shows how despite her powers' development not being as flashy as Yugo's, it's still notable and impressive.

In a way, you could say Amalia's character and power development are both subtle, yet a constant of the show.

Amalia's gone from summoning vines and using her doll to being able to overpower a Xelor demigod without help, use her powers to light up dark spaces (seriously, girlie can create literal light out of plants, how?!?!?), growing cotton plants from stone to keep her and her friends in touch, and season 4 has her become the team's weapons provider against the Nécromes; an ability that, as far as I'm concerned, only King Oakheart was able to do back in season 1 when he created a new bow for Evangelyne.

And it that weren't enough to prove how layered and multi-talented she is, there's her fight against the Sadida Nécrome itself.

Up until that point, except for a few punches here and there, Amalia's been mostly a long-ranged combatant, much like Eva, relying on her plants to fight. However, her summoning that wooden staff and using it to fight against the Nécrome shows that she's actually quite adept at hand-to-hand combat, too, especially when she moves with such grace and her strikes hold that much precision. Which at the same time means that not only Armand received training from the best masters around, so did Amalia.

This all comes to show Amalia is an example of the hardships she's endured slowly molding her into the person she was always meant to be, into the queen she was always meant to be. Grougal already said back in season 1 she had the heart of a Sadida Queen, her adventures were always meant to get her to that point.

Much like his adventures eventually turned Yugo both into the king his people longed for, and the one Amalia needed by her side. Everything they have been through together have led them to this moment, to the chance to stand together as king and queen, as husband and wife.

To stand together as one.

This is what Amalia had been preparing for her entire life. And I, for one, am proud to say, "All hail Queen Amalia."

Crosshair definitely is STILL hiding something. The operatives make him MADLY uncomfortable- the sense of strange brotherhood between them scares him more than anything we’ve seen so far, maybe because, well, loyalty is a big deal to him, but also because one of them may actually be his brother.

He did not mention he was being put through operative✨ pre school ✨until Howzer pressed for answers, and he was forced to spill some beans. But I don’t think that’s all he’s keeping secret. Like, he wanted to keep the operative as FAR away from his brothers as possible(ie, drawing fire away, 1v1ing)- why? Could it just be he wants to deal with these clones on his own? Spare his brothers the fight? Protect them?

Or is it because he doesn’t want to traumatize them further with a brainwashed Tech? He doesn’t want their memory of their “dearly departed” brother to be marred by this…hollow, empty assassin before him. He can’t do that to them. But he *knows*, and it’s eating him alive.

There’s still so much he’s keeping from everyone, and not even Omega knows what he witnessed on Tantiss. He knows things, and he’s too afraid to admit them.

Totally hijacking the Ling talk, but that train scene with Ed getting all frustrated over Ling being taller than him is a fucking HOOT. 10/10 fav. On another note on the manga... I might be supremely biased against Brotherhood cuz I'm an 03 girlie, but I have to agree about the manga being better than brotherhood too. I esp prefer the Elrics' and Izumi's relationship in the manga. They have all these little moments together that show she's more than just a teacher to them. Like, one of my FAVORITE moments is when Ed and Al start bragging to Izumi, as a child does to their mother, how they've been following her teachings of "to train the mind, train the body," and the panel then cuts to Izumi smiling proudly at them. It's fucking EVERYTHING to me.

Talking about fma03, I need to be honest and said I used to be a die-hard hater because I'm a Ling Yao fanboy sorry Im guilty BUT few months ago I began to become very fond of it and to understand that there really is nothing wrong with it being so far from the original story. I'm a new person now, a fma03 defender and fmab hater 🗣️ But I am glad that we all agree with the manga being top.

A maybe a too thorough review of lies of p from a person who has 0 soulslike experience and went blindly into the game:

Firstly, the games fantastic and I’ve loved my whole experience with it. I usually am disinclined to play soulslike due to characteristics in games I don’t like: open world, difficulty, and—most importantly—how the story is provided. What drove me towards playing the lies of p, however, was hearsay about how the narrative was provided as far as world building. I’ve never read Pinocchio and I will be honest, my memory of the story lies in Kingdom hearts (which I haven’t played in like 20 years lol). A side note: I also HATE character builders. I don’t want to make a character, I want to play a character already made. God bless, P.

The game came in clutch after playing a ton of dissatisfying and unpolished games. FFXVI had a great narrative, but game was too easy. Bayonetta 3 was just bad overall. Lollipop chainsaw repop was poorly remastered to the near point of unplayability. However—lies of p? Provided the exact thing I was looking for: a beautifully polished game that was difficult but fun.

The environment was just so beautiful and pandered to my love of all things pretty. It doesn’t help that Pieta was a heavy reference in the game—arguably my favorite marble statue (always grateful I got to see it in person).

The gameplay? Addicting. I’m horrendous at this game. Absolutely awful. Fuoco took me two days to beat. Nameless puppet? A day and a half. But it felt good to beat them. The pattern memorization was something I truly loved. The satisfaction of beating a boss (no specter, no items) was so satisfying after holding your breath for moments at a time.

In a game full of open worlds, lies of p, you remain something special in my heart. I LOVE THE LEVEL DESIGN. IM SO ANTI OPEN WORLD YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE. I don’t like driving sometimes, you really believe I’d travel to some minor location for random bullshit? FOH.

Going in very very blind, I had no clue there was a hidden mechanic. Let alone 3 endings. I got the middle(?) ending in which geppetto dies and calls p useless which made me so mad that I started a new game immediately. I hate geppetto and I refuse to let him have the last word on P’s self worth LMAO. Although the ending was bad, I’m happy I got it based on my choices—which I played authentically me as opposed to having a preconceived idea of what could potentially happen.

I’m a FF/MGS girly through and through. So I’m a bit spoiled with cutscenes and immense detail to things.

Again, MGS/FF girly, I like characters and am interested in learning more about them to the point where I know their favorite food lol. FOR EXAMPLE the black rabbit brotherhood? I know they overran the town, but who are they truly? ROMEO. ROMEO? WHERE FOR ART THOU ROMEO??? Clearly he was important to Carlo. AND CARLO??? HELLO?????? I’ve grown attached to these enemy characters BUT THE INSIGHT ARE CRUMBS. GIMME MORRRRREEEEEE.

also, I’m just saying, the exposition for every character gets dry really fast to the point I’m borderline dissociating. It’s infinitely better than HZD. But part of the reason I like character interaction is that you can learn so much about who people are by how they talk to people in their environment. And given P is a robot, it would’ve been absolutely amazing to hear him speak like pucinella (very choppy. Static-y) to something more fluid filled with something that is very humanizing (sarcasm). I also just wanted p to talk to Romeo, that shit is a wholeass miscommunication fic.

Anyway. This game is a solid 9/10 and I’m happy. It’s fun. I loved it.

4) Holding Out for Hope

This was my longest fic ever at the time that I wrote it- and I wanna say it was my first fic on AO3? I was an ff.net girlie back in the day and then got back into writing fic in 2020/2021 (who didn’t honestly?) If you’re a fan of the Clone Wars- it’s basically ‘what if Rex and Ahsoka raised Luke and Leia in the rebellion’ but also some slow burn shippy things. This fic proved to me that I can actually write long chapter fics and finish them 😅 so I’ll always be grateful to it for that. It spawned a whole series of fics from me in the same universe.

5) wait they don’t love you like i love you

This is the only modern high school/college AU I have *ever* written for any fandom. And I was surprised by how fun it was to write bc I’m typically a picky snob about modern AU’s tbh. Like it’s not that I dislike them- I just have very high standards for them 😅 I re-read this the other day in a ‘was this actually any good’ way and I am pleased to say, yeah, it was pretty cute.

As far as other fandoms I *would* write for but haven’t yet- Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, JJK, and The Hunger Games are at the top of the list. I have little mental WIP’s for them. But I get so hyper focused on one thing that it’s difficult for me to write everything I want to.

[[I'm so overwhelmingly happy about the new Baltic strip!!! SO MANY headcanons confirmed

-Liet seems the least comfortable with old pagan stuff, but isn't against it. Last one to switch out of paganism (kinda, different regions at different times) and yet he's iffy on it now. Being shacked up with Poland for so long'll do that to a guy.

-They acknowledge that there's relatively little info on their old myths. Much of it was oral tradition, and a lot of what WAS written was likely destroyed in crusades to erase ties to heathenism.

-They also acknowledge that they FORGOT much of this info, not that they didn't know it in the first place, confirming that they were around for pagan-era (rather than Est and Lat arising as new personifications when, say, Livonian Brotherhood took control)

-Raivis loves traditional clothes and flower crowns (though i'm pretty sure he'd actually wear an oak wreath since those are for men/masculinity, or maybe a mix of oak and flowers, buuut ngl he'd love plain ol' flower crowns too despite being girly. okay. so.

transmisandry is not the intersection between transphobia and misandry. transmisandry is the term used by transmasc people of all genders to discuss our oppression. yes, transmisogyny is the most common way transphobia rears its ugly head, but there are issues that affect a lot of transmasc people and not a lot of transfemme people.

definition of transmisogyny is the intersection of transphobia and misogyny which affects trans women and transfemme people.

transmisandry is the intersection of transphobia and misogyny which affects trans men and transmasc people. (i can't find a term which would correlate to trans nonbinary people, sorry. discrimination against nb people is definitely real though.)

if you don't like the word, come up with a better one. "transmisogyny exempt" and "transmisogyny affected" does not work in this case. yeah i'm exempt from the intersection of transphobia and misogyny as it affects transfemme people. but that's not an appropriate word to use when i'm talking about me being questioned for doing anything that isn't masculine enough for other people. it's not appropriate when i talk about my past s.assault. it's not appropriate when i talk about how i have difficulty trusting cis mspec men when they tell me that they toootally see me as a man. when it's embarrassing to be rejected from ""the brotherhood"" when trying so hard to fit in with them. when i simply am not allowed to do things men do, because in the eyes of others, maleness is inherent and more powerful, so i'm basically "lying to try to make myself look male better." when i'm denied gynecology appointments. when i'm forced to be in the female ward and ridiculed for it at the same time. when i am completely invisible or just ignored, because i'm not a scary enough target for people who target trans women. like those are things that are transphobic, yeah, but it is specifically because i'm transmasculine, aka "trying to be a man," because as someone seen as a woman, i'm infantilized and laughed at for thinking i can achieve something in a sexist world, especially something so big as maleness itself.

okay. when i am infantilized to the point of not deserving something so inherent as maleness, then i really don't think it's just "both sexism and transphobia" man. when a guy at work looks at me, his eyes see, yes, an insane girl, but also a weak boy on the bench in gym class who was not picked into the boys' team because he was too weak to be a real boy.

there's also something to be said about trans men and transmasculine people being all thrown in the same bag with nonbinary people who don't present masculine nor transfeminine, cis lesbians, regular ol' stereotypical feminists and also just women who aren't girly/womanly enough, as like, these weirdo snowflakes thinking that "girly whining will get them anywhere". yes, it is clearly misogyny, but also the crossing over into "masculine territory" is like, a specific kind of misogyny. is there any talk of that? genuine question btw if you have recs, i would love to hear about them.

btw this has soulmate stuff in it....

so my oc is this shifty little half-bosmer, half-breton conwoman with a lot....of names so basically she goes by arpina sun-stealer but her real name is a nord name (heehee lore) and she's the guildmaster of the thieves' guild and the listener of the dark brotherhood!! in terms of backstory this totally fits in but on a moral level it gets kinda fun because she's very soft and patient and exudes big Robin Hood energy THOUGH it is very clear that she Can and Always Will Be A Ratty Bastard despite her very fancy upbringing!!

all her life she's had a strange scar on her arm and when she meets the greybeards they read the name for her and they recognize it, but they can't tell her much bc soulmates are a dragon thing, not a human thing. eventually she meets miraak after getting harassed by his cultists and she is FURIOUS and HORRIFIED and naturally she's very upset but when she meets him she feels genuine sympathy for his plight and just can't bring herself to kill her soulmate.

miraak for his part is justifiably very angry abput being transferred over from one jailor to another, but he doesn't know that arpina's his soulmate until they go and take down alduin, but from his freedom from apocrypha to their entry to sovngarde he learns to get along and eventually starts enjoying their time together.
