ALSOO lets talk about what alicia's thoughts are here as she's looking at him,,, she says smth along the lines of "ur interesting to me bc i cant figure u out,,," and i love that a lot,,, maybe im looking too far into this but i read this as her saying "im seeing pieces of who u really are, i want to figure u out / explore ur true and honest self". she's learning more abt the side of lloyd thats empathetic, thats selfless, that brings out a good outcome for everyone,,,, she wants to see more of that side of him methinks,,,,, regardless of what she actually meant by this, it's a very cute moment and i really like it,,,

it again makes me think that alilloyd as a ship has soooo much potential. it could be so so good,,, this moment especially helps give it a little ground to stand on,,, i just wish there was a stronger foundation,,, it could be even greater,,, ohhh,,,, maybe in future eps who knows? we'll have to wait and see,,,

im willing to bet that this belief is also one that was sourced from credos/jang-cheol, just like the rock paper scissors game and just the farming/pacifism schtick as a whole. it probably played a part in how he had to convince the demons to follow him in the first place,,,

this could also indicate that living honestly and working to earn is a principle that jang-cheol followed in korea, and he decided that he would stick with it when he became credos. alternatively, he had the complete opposite principle (he was a gamer after all, with a max level character,,, could imply that he spent all his time on the game) but when he got transmigrated, he realized that he had another shot at making a living honestly and decided to commit to that. there isn't really enough to make a solid conclusion on how jang-cheol lived, but this is an interesting indicator and i think it's worth a bookmark! i hope the prequel gets a manhwa so i can read it,,, manifesting,,,

oh also the railroad! yay!! y'know idk if this is quite the preservation of nature i had thought they would do LOL this,,, could be considered manipulating the ecosystem too much,,, but also i am not a biologist! so i wouldn't know! it looks nature-preserved so i'll take it!

lloyd got like a jump ability and according to my mutuals thats not in the novel? so im curious as to what thats for,,, lloyd says it already but yeah he's a swordmaster now and has tons of other skills and summons too. what would a super jump be useful for,,,? so far, most if not all of his skills have had some use in the story,,, skills that are deliberately brought up like this are always used eventually. what in the world will a jump skill do??? what kind of situation will lloyd find himself in?? is this not almost over??? i'm so curious,,,

i genuinely had a lot of fun reading this ep the moments were all so fun and i'm very glad that things are looking up for them,,,!!! this does also worry me that there's going to be one more final obstacle before we actually get their good ending. bc now that i think abt it, getting the eye of summer does save lloyd but it doesn't stop fate,,, so,,, there might be more trouble ahead. but i'm not gonna worry about that right now!!! i'm coping!!! i'm coping.

First time players (me) who didn't play the sword game and saw him petrified next to a random pippins who's roasting the HELL out of him just... What is going on?? He was nice and made funny faces... He's completely alone? His job was given to him to get rid of him?? No one likes his jokes?? No one will care that he died??? Other darkners from different dark fountains are fine cus they felt like they belonged but he's... stone?........ He... loved us..?

Inside he was probably stone already...? (Most obvious depression metaphor in a Toby fox game ever) But also his every other expression is that fuckass smug cat face. "How about the usual?" On his first day on the stand. Like that older family member who was so funny and nice to you when you were younger- then you grew up and learned just how horrible his life is.

I went off but you get what I mean??? God damnit. I'm so happy I managed to get this across in my posts about him!! With these kinda characters (I'm mainly thinking of sans atm) there's a delicate balance between the silliness and the tragedy that if one overshadows the other their unique personality gets lost. A lot of us Undertale veterans are guilty of this with sans, myself included, so that's why I'm so happy you feel like I did him justice :]

Why did it took me so long to realize that El Ariete is the LITERAL DEFINITION of a 'LOOSE CANNON'?!?!

According to Oxford's definition of Loose Canon, means an unpredictable or uncontrollable person who is liable to cause unintentional damage.

1) BEING UNPREDICTABLE

He and his methods are LITERALLY UNPREDICTABLE. Using low tech facilities, like caves and underground areas, as well uses his environments to train himself and his students. HE ALSO USES LITERAL CANNONS-

Shakes literally said that the training he experience from El Ariete is, and I quote, "INSANE".

There's a Scene where Shakes was demand from El Ariete to JUMP OFF FROM THE PIRATE TOWER TO COMPLETE THE TRAINING. THE HEIGHT WAS PROBABLY MORE THAN 10 FEET TALL-

If these methods are used today or regularly in the Strika-Verse, people might see it as unusual, out of touch and dangerous. That didn't stop El Ariete using them however. The guy's method might be odd and unpredictable as heck, but it was effective, to the point helped Shakes won against Barka Fc in "How To Get a Header In, in the Super League S3E8".

2) BEING UNCONTROLLABLE

This is a STRECH- But there was a scene where Ben Zedd came with his cameraman to El Ariete's Pirate Tower to (probably) interview him about Shakes' training with him. And what was El Ariete's first responds? THREATEN THEM WITH HIS CANNON-

This probably just me, but this to me suggest that El Ariete doesn't like people around. To the point, they make him uncontrollable. (LIKE??? No one questioned "WHY is this Legendary Football Player living in an abandoned tower alone????" BECAUSE I NEED ANSWERS!!!)

3) CAUSE UNINTENTIONAL DAMAGE

........

*Shakes sets himself up as an intruder by accidently making a sound*

*El Ariete targets the sound by headering it*

*Shakes gets a Black Eye from it-*

I mean... It's pretty straightforward-

Also counting his insane unpredictable training method, then yeah- (I'm pretty sure El Ariete is aware that his training method might get people hurt, but since he uses these methods on himself and he came out just fine-ish (???????), I think he thought everyone who takes the training would just... take it. To the point, he doesn't care about the dangers of it- LOL)

BONUS+ ) DID I MENTION HE USES 'CANNONS' TO TRAIN?????

IN CONCLUSION:

El Ariete is FIGURATIVELY AND LITERALLY A 'LOOSE CANNON'.

The First Fic Post

I have yapped about this fic in the tags before so many times and i am FINALLY happy with the intro so here it is!! This will primarily follow Vita's pov for most of it, and be really oc focused rather than including a lot of cannon characters, I hope we like it! <3

The hallways were scrambling with students, as was usual for this time of day. Classes had released and everyone was going about their own way for lunch, most of them to the cafeteria. Lunch was the best and the worst of the day, often just the nourishing break needed to survive the rest of the day, but with it always came the pinnacle of high school social drama. The separating of carnivores and herbivores in their lines on opposite sides of the large room, the cliques, the spats, the overwhelming constant chatter.

Yoshikatsu couldn’t stand any of it. Even if he wasn’t so small, and his ears weren’t so sensitive, it would still be unpleasant. But crowds for a rabbit were inherently a thing of nightmares. He imagined most small animals must feel that way. But today was a Wednesday, the third in the month to be specific. On most days, he would have to wander into the cafeteria whether he liked it or not, but today, his schedule was irregular. Just like how Wednesday was the lax and boring mid-week hill for most students, but he, of course, was irregular.

He had a different destination in mind, the fourth floor carnivore boys’ bathroom. The fourth floor had nothing but classrooms, and became desolate during lunchtime. With private stalls and strong locks, this bathroom was an ideal place for his part-time job.

As he climbed the stairs, once the crowd of other beasts had dwindled, he reached into his bag and pulled out a small pair of stretchy black gloves, pulling them on over his small fragile hands. They were fitted perfectly, masking the soft white fur—and more importantly—covering his dull round nails with fake claws he’d sewn into them. His new nails were sharp, pressing into the fabric begging to be freed so they might find their way into someone’s neck. At least, that’s how they appeared.

He reached the fourth floor, abandoned as usual, and ducked into the equally empty bathroom. Entering the final stall and securing the lock behind him, he hung his bag on the door hook, and stepped up onto the toilet seat to hide his short stature, making sure to keep his ears pinned so the tips wouldn’t show over the top of the stall. Reaching into his bag again, he pulled out a glass bottle, a cologne marketed to large carnivores, and sprayed it around his neck and under his chin. This would mask the odor of his natural scent glands, and any lingering traces of rabbit would be written off by the final contents of his bag.

Blood. Rabbit blood.

He pulled it out in several small vials, counting to double check that he would have enough for the day. Just as he was returning them, he heard the bathroom door swing open again. His first customer of the afternoon.

“Uh.. hey?”

The carnivore’s voice was nervous at first, brash against the quiet of the bathroom. Yoshikatsu was quick to respond.

“Welcome back, good to hear your voice again.”

Their tone immediately brightened, comforted enough to even snicker as their heavy footsteps approached the last stall.

“I’m sure it is! You’re making a racket off this, you know?”

“I have to, you can’t just give away rabbit blood for free, it’s precious.”

“Yeah, yeah, I get it. I’ve heard your rambles. I’ve got your money, hand it over.”

Yoshikatsu grinned to himself, handing a vial over the top of the stall to a hand equally clawed as his glove, taking the crumpled bills shoved through the crack in the stall door with his other hand.

“I’ll be raising the price to 20,000 soon, just so you know.” He hummed, thumbing through the bills to do a mental count before tucking them into his bag.

“What?!” The carnivore on the other side of the door nearly squawked, “18,000 is already so much! And I know for a fact there’s at least five other guys who come buy it from you!”

Oh, poor naive beast, it was more like twenty.

“What the hell do you need another 2,000 yen for?? You’re rich!”

“We’re in senior year, man, you’re gonna have to get used to it anyway once you graduate. The prices only get higher.” He beamed as he spoke, embodying the cocky nature of carnivores always made him feel powerful.

“Oh, fuck you! You know all it would take is for one of us to report you and all this would be over!”

And make it so no one can get their fix? I doubt it.

“Are you even listening to me?!” They banged a fist against the door, Yoshikatsu barely flinched. He was used to this kind of behavior by now.

“I’m listening perfectly fine, and anyway, report me if you want to. Buying blood isn’t any less illegal than selling it, you’d be in just as much trouble.”

“Arrg... Fine. You’re really lucky you’re the only way for us to get ahold of this kinda stuff on school property.”

He listened to them storm out, content smile lingering. The truth is, reporting him would do nothing. Even if he didn’t go through so much trouble to disguise himself, no one would ever think a meek delicate rabbit was capable of handling and selling herbivore blood. That was the true advantage of being such a small pitiful animal, constantly being-

“Hello? I know somebody’s in there..”

His ears shot up with a start, he hadn’t heard this one come in. Nor did he recognize their voice.

“Hello, sorry… You haven’t been here before, have you?” His voice wavered for a moment, and he quickly smoothed his ears back down.

“N- No… You’re… Vita, right?”

With that one sentence, is anxiety diminished immediately, shoulders straightening with pride.

“Yes, I am.”

Vita. Life. His chosen name. A much superior name, in his opinion, to the dull and lengthy mouthful his parents had given him. It made his chest swell every time he heard another animal speak it, pride stretching his small, fragile ribs.

Even without the money, Vita was certain he’d continue coming back to this stall every month. He pulled out a second vial as their footsteps drew near and offered it over the top of the stall. But, to his surprise, the claws on the other side didn’t come to collect it.

“No! I… I’m not here for that.”

Their voice shook, and Vita felt his nose twitch in confusion. He slowly retracted the vial.

“I wanted to tell you… It’s awful what you’re doing here!”

“Awful? Why did you-”

“I can’t stand always hearing about you from the other carnivore students! The black market is cruel enough… It’s wrong to bring it into our walls. Cherryton is a sanctuary, it’s peaceful! If you don’t stop I… I’ll figure out who you are, and I will get justice for whosevers blood it is you’re selling!”

They didn’t wait for Vita to respond, their footsteps echoing through the bathroom as they scurried back out. …The true advantage of being a small pitiful animal… He had come to terms with the fact that he’d be underestimated for the rest of his life long ago, but the need larger and stronger animals felt to protect him… This was something he had yet to experience fully. He continued to think about it for the next two hours as he sold vial after vial to his new and returning customers. Some immature carnivore who’d yet to grow up and realize the adult world yet, who wanted to expose him and protect him at the same time... Of course, they couldn’t know it was his own blood that he sold, but still… Their tone, their fear and righteousness, something about it got to him. And it would continue to for the rest of the day.

And honestly???? I’m not totally sure how to give tips— but I love, love, love unhinged characters in media, so I’ll use them as examples

(long rant below lol)

I’ve always been a big fan of silly, ‘crazy’ characters in animated movies and cartoons. I grew up on Batman the Animated Series and the original Teen Titans, which were full of silly, fun tragic characters.

Don’t get me wrong, i love a good edge-lord— but as a tot i thought the colorful, theatrical, insane bad guys were more fun to watch than the big scary serious ones (ESPECIALLY if they had a good villain song. A+ good shit)

And not just bad guys!! There are a ton of unhinged good/neutral characters that i absolutely adore.

((There are many more characters in both categories, but I’ll slide these examples in here for now))

My personal brand of “Unhinged” or “Crazy” characters definitely leans on comedy. That’s what i enjoy seeing and reading! I personally like it because it can help keep a story fresh and interesting. There’s an element of surprise and unpredictability with what a character might do, and i love that!!

I also really enjoy a touch of feral behavior in my unhinged characters. The lack of clarity and the danger that imposes can be a very fun tool to use, no matter the character’s moral compass. (I’m feral for feral behavior lol)

And impulses. Whether a character has a few screws loose or is generally a goober, they like to act on impulses. This often goes hand-in-hand with comedy, and that’s something I enjoy!! We get a lot of moments like that in Rise, and that was one of my favorite parts of that TMNT iteration.

But as far as writing goes, it’s been tricky for me. All of the characters I grew up or love have been visual— trying to find a good balance for reading has been a puzzle I’ve been figuring out as I go.

I read a lot manga (lol nerd) and comics, and I love how thoughts/dialog are depicted. Especially the really dramatic or impactful moments. (I’d add examples but I’m already at the Tumblr image limit LAME)

As strange as it sounds, I try to capture that “impactful visual” style in my writing. If I had ANY advice on writing unhinged characters, pay attention to pacing—

Short. Fast. A calculating thought. Perhaps a run on sentence that lacks punctuation to represent the rushing and disorganized thought process. A question? An answer with little thought. Is this moment amusing; describe how. Is it upsetting; describe how. Are the thoughts starting to scatter? M aybe s o…

Big moment statement.

Action or plan of next big move. Flow should never seem too uniform. Even in normal writing. Don’t be afraid of accentuating— but don’t overdo it. Remember, unhinged characters are impulsive. Have fun with that.

Just as a quick and dirty summary— when it comes to unhinged characters, I like to use comedy, feral behavior, and acting on impulses. I also like to keep it as visually appealing as possible for characters to give the eyes a little treat after reading walls of text. I like to use fun text formatting to help with the fun too (But don’t overdo it! Don’t make it feel like a chore to read) (<- says the girl who goes into way too much details sometimes lmao whoops)

But ultimately— have FUN!!! Unhinged characters are fun, so make sure you have fun writing/drawing/creating them!!

i know i haven't made my liveblog post on ep 177 yet but i just need to post these parallel panels by itself because it's making me damn emotional and i can't stop thinking about it (tged spoilers)

a large part of how suho has made it this far is his will to hold on, even when things seem bleak, even when he's going through the worst of times, and god that determination shines through again and again. hope and optimism and holding out on the faith that things will get better... holding on for so long... both then and now, suho reaches endlessly towards the light...

something else to note is the panel on the left is from i think episode 163 (where the jewel of truth revealed... the truth), but it's also a flipped and dimmed version of a panel from episode FIVE, way way way WAY early on in the manhwa... during episode five, suho comments on how he had to just keep believing that things would be better at the end. he says,

god that makes me so. emotional idk, i don't really have anything clever to say on this it's just. suho is still, STILL reaching to the light, to lifelines, to hope (TO JAVIER HIS LIFELI- sorry. my demons). he still holds on desperately, he doesn't give up...

however, there is also a difference; in the left panel, when he was suho, when he was confronted with the truth by the jewel of truth, he felt like he had to do things alone. and in both episode five and episode 163, we see that as much as suho reaches, we don't see him actually grab onto that light. there's a lingering note of despair in the panels that follow this one in ep 5 and ep 163 (hell in 163, it straight up goes OUT in front of us).

but in this week's ep,,, lloyd reaches for the light and it comes to him, and it's because he has javier's and alicia's support. there javier is in front of him, holding the light there for him, and there alicia is behind him, giving him the mana that'll let him cross that stretch, and god that makes me sick because imagine what suho could have done when he was still in korea if only he had the support of his family, to keep on going and to keep living... but it's okay because in the here and now, lloyd reaches for the light and it actually appears and he has hope and he can live and he has his friends and family and his closest partners by his side and- AAAAH. AAAAAA THE VOICES!!!

i'll talk more about my general thoughts on this episode when i get around to writing my liveblog post on it, but seriously catching this parallel is probably one of the highlights of this ep (besides the last panel that i've been losing it over for the last couple days, if you've read the ep you can probably guess LOL). i don't know if this was an intentional callback, but tged has done callbacks and references pretty well so far, so i'm happy to assume that this is also one. this rounds out the arc so so nicely and i'm so so happy... oh suho...
