You can disagree with me on this, but I want to see peoples thoughts on this:

I’ve seen many takes where people say that the mourning of Liam and his death is sanctifying him and his actions despite the allegations that came out before he died.

I want to preface that Liam was my favourite, and am of the opinion that whenever he acted out or said something people disliked greatly (with respect to 1D) it would coincide with his struggles with substance abuse.

My take is this:

My beliefs stand with the concept that a person is held on trial for every action in their life within the grave. Positive or negative. And face the ultimate judge.

Thus his death signifies how he is already held accountable for the things that came out about him. Does that mean we ignore it? No. But it also means that the feelings of grief and sadness for who he was (positives) and what he represented will come stronger.

The online bullying (for the lack of a better term) he faced throughout the aftermath of one direction would hurt anyone. What they experienced during the bands lifetime was unusual enough, at such a young age too. To go from global fame and success to being considered “who? Oh well” is going to have an impact on anyone (which he’s even implied himself in interviews). And the kind of flooding of jumping on the bandwagon right before his death is one of the negative natures of the internet. And we say this now since hindsight is 20/20, but it still stands.

To conclude this, Liam was a significant part of our lives, and clearly many others with the influx of mourning from both the celebrity sphere and fan sphere. It is normal to grieve, and his faults should not be ignored, but they are not the forefront of the issue any more. The man cannot defend himself from the jury of the living, and thus speaking on the sins of a dead man who now will face the ultimate justice when he clearly was struggling to uphold kindness is simply cruel and does nothing.

This is said without hate or negativity to those who still hold him accountable, because again, those feelings are understandable and expected. But the other side of the coin, the grief and the memorializing is also of the same nature.

alright heaven forbid I come to the defense of a rich white man whose watch is out of my tax bracket and at the risk of sounding parasocial, let’s discuss the response to the events of today, and how we can change our outlook in the future:

1. The public response on Twitter and in the comments of Instagram are not okay. You are allowed to feel strongly about some things but to go to a public space and wish harm on a person is too far. If you are focused so negatively on the shortcomings of someone you dislike that you cannot focus on the success of someone you do like, then you are only working to make yourself and others negative (“hating ___ makes me happy” no, being negative makes you happy, which does not make you a happy or enjoyable person).

Since the fandom is bad at relegating emotions and focusing on the positive, here are some exercises:

instead of “____ is a waste of a seat”—> try “my driver worked to get into f1 and be where he is, I’m proud of him!”

instead of “____ did so horrible, my driver is way better” —> try “my driver had such a good race!”

instead of “I hate ___ he should crash/leave the sport” —> try “I’m not a fan of this driver, I like ___ more and root for him in the races”

in no situation is it okay to send death threats/imply a driver should die/propose suicide to a driver. neither is it okay to make racist comments about drivers. ever. if you are so affected that you enjoy sending these types of messages, I am afraid no post on the internet can help you because the type of help you need requires a degree.

I bring these up today because of the backlash Lando received post-race, but these types of comments have been present in all of Formula 1 history, and never has it been okay.

However, if you want to hate in the privacy of your mind or with friends, go for it, bringing it into public platforms makes it uncomfortable for everyone, and takes the fun out of a fandom.

2. Context! Critical thinking! Being able to think critically in a given situation is a very important skill to have in life. Things are not split-line black and white. In today’s example, a couple of sentences in Lando’s post-race interview were taken out of context and misunderstood. Rather than checking out the original source (in which he was clearly discussing the misfortune of his own pit stop and how the timing of the red flag was luck) and forming their own opinions, many people jumped on the bandwagon, which is uninformed and harmful. Doing this without research makes you gullible, which is not a useful life skill.

Lando has since made glowing remarks about Max, it’s okay if you relax and enjoy the results of the race.

Ok, jumping on the HVAC AU bandwagon real quick: this version of Luigi is such a jerk to everyone, especially to his Mario and the other Luigi’s. I REALLY hope HVAC Mario gets a redemption arc later and saves the other Marios and Luigis. (Speaking of which, there was one incident in a previous part implied that seemed VERY traumatic for HVAC Mario, curious about that.) But, I guess we’ll never know until later (except you because you made the characters hahaha XD.) Regardless of how things go, I LOVE this AU, it’s interesting to see what a bad version of Luigi would look like and you do it flawlessly. Nicely done and keep it up!

Also, gonna talk about the Syncytium AU for a minute. I think, while it’s more simple than the other AUs (don’t get me wrong I love all of the AUs), I think it’s underrated because it has such a cool concept and has a lot of potential. I must ask though, what are E. Gadd’s thoughts in general to this fusion? Concern over Luigi while at the same time excited about new research uncovered perhaps? I do wonder what Mario’s reaction will be, hopefully Mario will recognize his poor brother in that Gooigi fusion.

YES YES GET ON THE BANDWAGON. Poor HVAC Mario is really a victim of circumstance... toxically loyal with nowhere he can safely direct his pain except inside and towards his captives. There was an unfortunate incident that left him shaken up... and perhaps slightly easier to manipulate. Poor thing. We'll just have to see how this whole fiasco ends... (And thanks so much! You are not wrong that the Syncytium AU is my simplest AU which I am perfectly happy with, it's a nice balance for me! E Gadd certainly cares about Luigi's safety first, but really sees this accidental fusion as So Incredibly Scientifically Interesting and COOL. He was confident in sending the fused pair back out to save Mario and the others as he saw no immediate health risk to Luigi after calming him down and assessing his condition to be stable. He could form a Goo-Poltergust on his back just as Gooigi was able to do! So he could still catch ghosts! He was looking forward to the mission end when he could study the pair more extensively, that's for sure hahaha. rant: twitter and eret’s apology

this doesn't really affect mcytblr that much but i am quite frustrated with twitter at the moment. rant under the cut.

disclaimer: I am poc and have adhd so I feel I can comment on the situation also I am so sorry if I come off rude, I really don’t intend to. also most of what I say is a twitter issue and not something i have seen mcyt tumblr

real quick background:

tonight I joined eret's stream as I usually do homework during his streams and I come to find out they are dealing with a controversy over the diversity in the smp. apparently in last night’s stream a donation asked them about the lack of diversity in the smp and they responded by talking about ponk as ponk had shared his culture experience with eret. tonight eret spent the first couple minutes of their stream apologizing for implying that ponk was all the representation needed and/or that quackity and skeppy weren't poc. in summary, it was a misunderstanding of eret’s intentions.

my issue with this:

first, I am mexican, also I do have a twitter and did browse through the eret tag to see what others were saying, but my twitter is not associated with mcyt, I am not on mcyt stan twitter and do not wish to be. now I understand that a lot of the people in the mcyt fandom are young (I am 18 and in college), however the current trend of feeling the need to "cancel" (although this may not have been the intention) people is not progressive. first of all, eret in my opinion, was not in the wrong, in fact just as they said, they didnt want to say any false information about the other members of the smp, so he only mentioned ponk who he had spoken to. while I understand how their words could have been misunderstood, the drama it seems to have caused was not necessary. as I said before, a lot of people in this fandom are young, so they are generally more quick to jump on bandwagons but I think there are a few things everyone should remember before deciding to claim that someone has done something out of pocket.

1. make sure you have all the information: for one eret likely has little to no control over who is whitelisted on the smp, as a result they likely have no ability to directly change the diversity on the server

2. ask someone educated: I mean this more than just asking a person of color, ask someone who has more knowledge about the situation what they think. for example, ponk who outright stated that the statements towards eret were falsely motivated. this could also include older fans (I say this lightly, but in my experience, the adult members of fandoms seem to approach these situations with more nuance)

3. think about how spreading this type of information will affect others: as seen tonight eret publicly addressed 16k viewers on this controversy, and obviously seemed anxious about it, enough so that many donations referenced their anxiety. now I say this next part as a person with adhd, eret has stated multiple times that they are neurodivergent (adhd + dyslexia) and have anxiety, and with this type of repeated hate they have received recently I completely understand why their mental health is not great at the moment (this has been stated in erets tweets). by not approaching situations that could be misunderstandings (such as this one) with a sense of complexity, others can be negatively affected. 

(quick side rant: as someone with adhd this sort of rejection from such a large amount of people hurts so bad, I cannot imagine dealing with it. for context- people with adhd typically have rejection sensitivity)

tl:dr: please think critically before spreading information about ccs or anyone who might have said or done something controversial, although this is mainly a twitter problem.

Ugh, so I religiously follow figure skating and one of the most problematic pair teams (Vanessa James/Eric Radford) has chosen Falling as music for their free skate, and I am just dreading all the Harries that will be eating it up come the Winter Olympics. To give you some context, these people are both abuse apologists.

Vanessa’s former partner was found guilty for sending dick pics to a 13 year old female skater from his rink, and is now stuck in France as he will be prosecuted if he returns to the US. The coaches and Vanessa herself knew about this but kept quiet not to hinder their Olympic dream (this was back in 2018 and the story surfaced in 2019 when this was brought to the attention of safe sport). Ofc there was much victim blaming from the coaches and fellow skaters at the rink and the girl had to leave while Morgan Cipres (that’s the abuser’s name) went on doing skating shows in Europe with Vanessa.

Eric Radford received a bronze medal at the previous Olympics with his former partner. He decided to return to competition without informing the woman he skated for over a decade with who he had already committed to do shows with, basically leaving her without a big chunk of her livelihood, and then justified himself saying that she had just had a child so she was probably not interested in returning to competition (again, she was not even asked and she got pretty pissed about this comment on social media). This ofc isn’t even the worst he’s done. His friend, John Coughlin, was accused of sexually molesting several minors through the years he trained at a rink, and safe sport banned him from attending competitions. Multiple women came forward anonymously and publicly (US olympic skater Ashley Wagner being probably the most recognizable name in the bunch) and some of them were called liars and others just plainly slut shamed by Coughling’s former coach and colleague all over social media. Well, this guy didn’t want to face the music, so he killed himself. Radford, knowing about the allegations and all, decided not only to publicly mourn and defend his friend, but he also composed a piano piece in his honour, and made statements that implied that even thought he might have been guilty of forcing himself on minors, he was a wonderful friend to him.

Now, I know many people claim we should separate art from artists, but I can’t imagine how it must feel like for a victim of not only these two abusers, but abusers in general, to see people who’ve supported and defended them being praised to the point they’re allowed to represent their country at the Olympics. It sends an horrific message IMO. I think or the girl who was basically shunned from the skating community after the story about Morgan Cipres broke, and I really feel sick thinking about her seeing someone who knew of that and chose to turn the other way skating on the biggest sporting stage in the world and being cheered on.

I’m sorry to send you such a long anon. I just saw someone talking about people skating to Harry’s music on Twitter and I feel like it’s just a matter of time before Harries jump on this bandwagon, as these two skaters are very “appealing” PR wise. She’s an unarguably beautiful woman of color and he’s openly gay and married to another skater. I guess without knowing all of this background info, I would have been curious about them, too.

Harper’s 2020 Fic Wrap-Up

my very good friend and incredibly talented felow writer @sagemoderocklee came up with the idea of doing an end of the year fic wrapup in an attempt to polish the turd known as 2020, and since i actually managed to get some writing done this year i figured, why not jump on the bandwagon? 

a lot of super duper fucking shitty things happened in 2020, but i will always be proud that in this incredibly chaotic, stressful, and challenging year i managed to produce almost 180k of content (and that’s not even counting the writing i started in 2020 but haven’t published yet). so, to celebrate what’s been a pretty big achievement for me, i wanted to go through the various projects i’ve spent the last twelve months working on and give a preview of my plans for 2021.

projects i worked on/completed in 2020:

first off, let’s start with the beast to end all beasts, my personal baby, and honestly probably the reason most people follow me -- star trek au:

something bigger than the sky (shiita; 44,163 words; completed): 

i’ve said this before, but the whole idea for star trek au was literally just a joke between me and my-then girlfriend, now-fiancee, and eternal shiita enabler alexa aka @durintrash (by the way, if you follow me for my fics and you DON’T follow alexa for her corresponding art WHAT, exactly, are you doing with your life????) where i sat in a space-themed diner and said ‘haha imagine itachi as a vulcan.’ but then i blinked and suddenly somehow i’d written the prologue and the first chapter of SBTTS in the span of a week. it’s like i was possessed by a fanfic demon.

it sounds super cheesy but i honestly can’t say enough how important this fic has been to me and how much it’s pushed me to be a more productive and more dedicated writer. previously i spent a lot of time Thinking about writing and occasionally i’d put a few words on the page and then i’d go... do... something... else. but star trek au was the first idea i loved enough that it actually pushed me to write and keep writing and not give up even when i was confronted with things like writer’s block and worry over the quality of my writing. so thank you, star trek au, for being the light in a very dark year for me. 

by the end of SBTTS, i felt like i accomplished everything i wanted to do with the story’s beginning installment: i introduced all the characters and set the groundwork for their development; i showed what life on the corvus was like and how starfleet, the federation, and the universe functioned; and, more than anything, i was able to sketch out both the main protagonists -- itachi and shisui -- with all their strengths and flaws, show their relationship to one another, and hint at how that relationship would progress. 

all the stars are closer (shiita; 75,195 words; completed)

considering how slow i used to be at writing, i thought it would be, like, twelve years before i managed to get to the second part in the series. BUT then covid happened and i half-lost, half-quit my job, and like a lot of people this year i ended up with a lot of free time on my hands. and so, like a fucking demon, i finished this part in two and a half months. 

when i originally planned this part out, i really thought it would be a lot shorter and a lot lighter atmosphere-wise than it turned out. instead, this second section of the story ended up being pretty meaty in terms of length and in subject.

that said, overall, i’m really happy with how ATSAC turned out. i loved the way the characters progressed, how the relationships deepened, and how we were able to see this universe grow bigger and more complicated. and i’m very satisifed with how it set the stage for part three, which takes us to...

lovers alone wear sunlight (shiita; 41,518 words; in progress)

there’s... a lot about this part that i just can’t talk about yet, a) because it isn’t finished and b) because it contains some of the biggest plot points in the entire series thus far. if you’ve been keeping up with the stardates thus far (which i encourage you to do!) you know what part three is leading up to: itachi leaving the corvus and the dissolution of shisui and itachi’s growing relationship. 

with that in mind, i’m... more than a little terrified about writing part three, which is why the third chapter has been languishing in my google drive for months now. (and also why i started not one, but TWO new fics to cope with my writer’s block. whoops.) chapter three is where all the parts come together and shit hits the fan, and i can only hope that everyone will be as excited to read it as i am to publish it. 

next up, the two other projects i began this year:

salvation comes only in our dreams (shiita; canon divergence; 16,835 words; in progress)

for a long time, i’ve wanted to write something that’s actually set in the naruto universe and works to correct a lot of the flaws that i see in the series. there are a lot of things that bother me about naruto, but i think one of the things that frustrates me the most is the really messy and in some ways offensive resolution to the uchiha coup plot thread, and i wanted to write a story that dealt with the complicated themes of the series--imperialism, oppression, genocide, child soldiers--but, like, didn’t suck and completely drop the ball. thus, the massacre au was born. 

my main goal was to tell a story that showed a lot of these characters in ways we’ve never seen them before, specifically itachi. i didn’t want to write itachi as just an idealist who suffers and Suffers AND SUFFERS for konoha yet still remains loyal to the village for some unfathomable reason like he is in the series. i wanted to write an itachi that was sharper, more jaded, and more suspicious of the world around him, but overall was still a good person with a kind heart. and for shisui, well... obviously there’s a lot going on there, too. 

this is easily the darkest story i’ve ever written, and as the plot thickens it will certainly get darker with relationship dynamics that are complicated and unhealthy At Best. i hope that as the story goes on it’s a ride people continue to enjoy, as i was super pleasantly surprised at how popular this fic became (compared to my usual stats, at least) 

oceans between us (shiita; alternate universe; 15,039 words; in progress)

it’s good to know that i continue to be the most ridiculously niche version of myself as yes, i wrote a fucking shiita atonement au. 

with each fic i write i try to have a very specific voice that suits the particular piece and distinguishes it from other stories that include the same characters. for example, star trek au chapters tend to be more fun and light-hearted (especially shisui POV chapters) and lean more into the action movie and sci-fi adventure feel of the star trek universe, while the massacre au is written in a way that’s much heavier and guided by itachi’s emotions and experiences. my main goal with this story was to give it the same romantic, operatic, almost hazy quality that the movie has, which reflects the period setting and also the nature of this grand tragic love story. 

i knew from the beginning that there were going to be a lot of things that i cut from the film in my retelling, like the lola subplot and obviously the setting of pre-wwii england. i also knew i wanted to explore some of the aspects of the film that were implied more than outright stated, like the themes of classism and upper-class privileges. and more than anything i wanted to structure this piece around this idea of tension building and building until it finally snaps and there’s just a world of mess and hurt and loss that affects these two characters in two very different ways. 

also, the sex scene. i haven’t written a sex scene for anything in, like, a decade, so that was a lot of pressure. but i’m happy with how it came out and i think it ended up being an aspect of the story that felt like both a natural progression and necessary to show the affection these two people have for one another.

originally i was just going to end the story with shisui going to jail, but when i told alexa this i genuinely thought she was going to kill me. so, that didn’t happen lmao. but the more i tried to imagine what a second chapter would look like, the more i realized she was right, and it would have been a terrible idea to end the fic there. as for whether or not the final chapter will keep That Ending... who can say?

goals i have for 2021:

finishing lovers alone wear sunlight and, if i’m very lucky, beginning the fourth and second to last part of star trek au (yes, as it currently stands this 160k+ word series is only halfway finished. sorry not sorry)

publishing the next chapter of salvation comes only in our dreams (i don’t know when it will drop. i don’t know anything about this fic. please do not @ me) 

completing oceans between us (the second and final chapter is currently sitting at about 4k words and will probably end up at about 15k in total)

completing and publishing a new fic i’ve started at the very end of 2020, which is the shiita jurassic world au nobody but me and alexa knew they wanted. it’s essentially a 90s romcom with dinosaurs and i cannot Wait to share it. (it’s at about 9k right now and will probably end up being around 20k to 23k in total... maybe...)

FINALLY starting my dream project: the shiita olympics au i’ve been planning for years, where itachi is a figure skater and shisui is a hockey player (i’d like to keep this under 150k but at this point trying to keep my stories at a managable word count is a losing battle)

i have finally jumped on this bandwagon from the last couple of days. bear in mind these will for the most part be a list of non romantic relationships as i don’t really feel comfortable shipping venti with people. it’s mentioned in my rules but i’ll only ship venti with immortals who also appear young / use the teen model. at the moment i’m singleship but am tentatively open to more ships so long as they follow these terms.

albedo /  🖤🧡:  i actually really love the idea of albedo & venti being sort of frenemies for a while. venti has already expressed a great deal of mistrust when it comes to albedo whereas they seem to be fairly friendly with everyone else. i don’t foresee this staying that way & can easily see them becoming unlikely friends eventually but certainly in the beginning i can see them butting heads. 

diluc  /  🧡💙:  i tend to see these two as sort of buddy film comedy duo for obvious reasons. but on a more serious note i think given it’s heavily implied venti fought in the rebellion with diluc’s ancestor, i think there’s a good chance venti also kinda views diluc like a concerned parent would. especially if venti knows of diluc’s history & what became of crepus.

jean  /  🧡💙💚:  in mondstadt i tend to view jean as one of venti’s closest friends & trusted allies. a great deal of this is due to how much jean resembles vennessa in spirit & personality. with that in mind i tend to feel jean is one of the few people venti will actually listen to when it comes to advice & one of the only people who is capable of guiding him to a place where he’s taking better care of himself. there’s very few people alive today he trusts more then jean.

kaeya  /  🧡:  drinking buddies! unfortunately kaeya is an outsider & didn’t participate in the save dvalin mission. therefore venti’s a lot more closed off to him in particular. not as far to albedo’s extent where he doesn’t trust him but he is less inclined to expose himself when in kaeya’s presence than he would if he were with jean or diluc. i do think they’d get along well though! maybe even work together to tease diluc. 

lisa, amber & the other knights  /  🧡:  same deal as kaeya but likely even less close. i think they’d be relatively friendly though. in terms of lisa & amber i think venti also trusts them a good amount compared to most of the others in mondstadt. 

barbara  /  🧡💙💚:  on a similar level as jean, venti respects & trusts barbara a lot. i don’t think they’d be as close as first but i think they’d be really sweet friends. i’d love to see them bond over music & maybe even learn some things from each other. 

fischl, diona, razor & bennett  /  🧡💙: i’m losing steam so i’ll be brief. c’mere kids grandpa would like to tell you some stories. 

klee  /  🧡💙:  “hey wanna help me blow up dawn winery?” “boy do i?!”

mona  /  🧡:  what if we sat on a bench in mondstadt...and we were both broke & hungry

zhongli  /  🧡:  hag best friends!!! as much as venti likes to tease him, i would say zhongli is one of venti’s closest friends & trusted allies. but they’re the sort of friends who disagree on everything & bicker all the time. an unlikely best friends kinda deal

xiao  /  💕🧡💚:  it is not a secret that this ship has be down bad. but! as i’m ship exclusive for it already ( hi sam ) i’ll just go over non romantic stuff. i think they have potential to be pretty close friends! i would like to explore the possibility of venti being kind of a mentor to xiao in terms of anemo spirit & what not.

ganyu  /  💕🧡:  outing myself as a crackshipper once more but outside of xiao, ganyu’s the only canon character i would be open to shipping with. i think their dynamic would be really fun & fresh. think howl’s moving castle kinda deal lol. i’m not super invested in them as of right now as i haven’t written with any ganyus so i mostly see this dynamic as platonic but i would not be opposed to seeing it as romantic either. 

hu tao  /  🧡:  bane of zhongli’s existence buddies! but for real i really like the potential of this friendship. i think it would be a lot of fun. 

beidou  /  🧡:  drinking buddies electric boogaloo 

xinyan  /  🧡💚:  i think venti would really like xinyan actually! he’d find her refreshing & her music like a breath of fresh air. i think they’d be a similar sort of deal to how venti & barbara are only more punk rock lol.

qiqi  /  🧡💙:  "i’ve had qiqi for a day & a half but if anything happened to her i’d destroy liyue harbor”

ningguang, keqing & the qixing  /  🧡:  genuinely haven’t thought about their dynamics much. i think they’d probably get along well though! though perhaps in a similar vein to how venti is with diluc or zhongli where they can’t stand venti half the time ( & i can’t blame them ) 

baizhu  /  🖤🧡:  another frenemies situation possibly! i feel like unlike zhongli venti would possibly be wary of baizhu & the way he goes about business. he definitely thinks baizhu is a scammer though. again i don’t think it’d be as much mistrust as albedo but venti’s got his eye on you, doctor.

fatui members  /  🖤:  yeah if you’re fatui or aligned with the tsaritsa in any way venti inherently mistrusts you. which is primarily due to the encounter with signora. signora in particular venti dislikes & wants to steer clear of. but if you’re fatui in general it’ll be a tough job trying to gain his trust or friendship. 

traveler & paimon /  🧡💙💚:  a similar deal venti has with jean. venti trusts traveler a lot & considers them a close friend & trusted ally. this somewhat extends to paimon but i feel venti is suspicious of them as well. not to mention venti would be more likely to tease paimon as well. 

other archons, ocs & crossovers  /  💕🧡 💙 💚🖤: this is a circumstantial case obviously but everything is on the table! feel free to come hit me up if you want some of this bard in any shape or form.

I'm going to bring out a controversial ask. What are your thoughts on Chat's behaviour in Copycat? I have seen so many salters absolutely wreck the boy for that episode, especially for his last line about being heartbroken. Was what he did wrong? Completely. But I'm pretty sure he knows that. He never acted upon it again and defiently improved since then.

Chat is a young kid and both him and Marinette make mistakes and wrong decision because they are new to many of this (being heroes, being in love) and above all they are children so its a little unfair for people to act like they should know actually what to do all the time and won’t allow any room for mistakes. 

I’m surprised anyone has trouble with Copycat, because even though Chat told a white lie about how close Ladybug and Chat are implying there is something romantic it’s because Chat is a hopeless romantic and at the beginning of their relationship he has remained hopeful to the fact that Ladybug maybe could like him but or one day would. 

Of course, no one should assume anyone’s feelings or feel entitled to them in real life. But Chat never presents himself as feeling entitled to it. He flirts/jokes around at not the best of moments sometimes but he never crosses any line with Ladybug. She will flirt joke back when she feels less overwhelmed and in times she doesn’t need to have 100% of her focus be on the battle. 

And the fact that we’ve seen it confirmed in the show and by Astruc himself that Ladybug doesn’t take his flirting in a negative light because Chat respects her and is a gentleman. But people think this way because a few popular content creators for this fandom paint this idea that they do any what happens is fans of that creator start to mimic them just so they can agree with a creator they like. Some of them will even admit to not even watching the episode/episodes but still jump on this bandwagon just because they want to be apart of that group. 

I always like to form an opinion without hearing what the rest of the fandom or people that I respect/am friends within the fandom because it’s okay to not always agree with everyone. I also try to put myself in the character perspective as to why they may have acted a certain way, what factors could’ve contributed to it, and is this something that is obvious for their character development. And considering this was Chat season one and he has done development since that episode I would say this isn’t something that you can reflect on to track his character development.

I’ve got people asking what the hell is going on, since it seems this shit is getting twisted somewhere along the line and because I do not have the time or energy to engage with squabbling over this any longer, I’m gonna to take some time to state the facts from the get go (since some people apparently can’t keep track) and explain how I see all this one last time, and then I’m done with this shit. Let me be clear - I am not, and never have been, claiming to “own tropes”, as so many have accused me of. I have absolutely no issue with anyone using time-travel and the associated themes in their Red Dead fan fics. This is not entirely about that, I’m sorry so many of you can’t see the bigger picture. My primary issue with this is that someone mentioning me by name (without a tag) and saying I’d approved the content of their story when I was completely unaware of the changes they’d chosen to make to it until after it had been seen by dozens of people here. I do also have an issue with someone telling me they’re going to remove something to avoid drama going forward, only to then upload it to a second site a week later with the additional changes and mention of my name/approval. Changes which stem from someone claiming that they’ve never heard of my story one day, and then a week after discovering it, going ahead and changing their story to include a necklace/stone too. Which is the same plot device that is the very foundation of my entire fic! Coincidence? Maybe. You be the judge on that.  Now for everyone who’s jumped on the bandwagon while missing the start of this drama, this is what actually happened....

On September 8th - I was alerted to a story written by Charlee (previously @the-charlee-monstah) under the pen name GracelessTevy that was posted on AO3, called Fast Forward To Redemption. The story was about Arthur jumping through time into 2020, which is the same loose premise as my story Wish Upon. So what? Right? Right! There were enough differences for me to have zero concerns about this story existing. The main female character in FFTR was completely unaware of who Arthur was in relation to Red Dead, unlike my story where both the OC and Arthur know he’s a fictional character in modern reality. While the plot of FFTR appeared to follow the same path as my story with the OC helping Arthur find his feet in the twenty-first century and such, I didn’t feel it was that notably similar in any other sense. Now, this all came to my attention because apparently someone had commented on FFTR claiming that it was the same as my story Wish Upon. Due these comments on AO3 Charlee came forward, commented on WU, and the @’d me in a tagged post on here about the messages she’d received, and asked for my thoughts on what had been commented, because it appeared these comments were in defence of me. (There were a couple of other comments on the story that didn’t mention my story specifically but cried copying on some level. I’m unsure if that was in regard to my story or something else, since Charlee’s camp have repeatedly told me my idea is unoriginal and “been done” already....) At that time Charlee claimed she had never even heard of my story Wish Upon that random people were accusing her of copying. Concerned by this, for both my story and Charlee potentially being dragged unnecessarily by random strangers - I took some time out of my day to find her story, read what was posted. At that time I did not see any similarities beyond the element of Arthur existing in the modern day. There were some vague similarities, in the sense that Arthur arrived during a storm, and that the chapter began with the female character speaking to her friend about cowboys in a novel, but nothing that concerned me in any significant way. I responded to Charlee publicly and via DM’s and told her that what I saw was fine, and that I had no issue with anything she’d written at that point. Charlee repeatedly claimed to have no prior knowledge of my story but must have found it on AO3 in order to get my contact information from my profile to bring the matter to my attention on here. (Since AO3 still doesn’t have a Goddamned private messaging feature!) Charlee said in a comment she left on Wish Upon, that she would delete her story to avoid any further confusion or drama over it.

I thought that was the end of it, but since this began on AO3 I deleted the comment from my story because I wanted to avoid encouraging drama in the comments on my end, and I went on with my life.   Skip to last night (Sept 14th) a week later, and someone comes to my inbox here and tells me that Charlee has decided to completely change the name of her story, to reference a stone, and had also made changes to include a mention of a necklace that would obviously be relevant to the plot going forward. (For those of you who don’t follow WU, the concept is that Arthur is bought out of the game and transported to 2019 into the life of a young woman who made a off-the-cuff wish about him being a real person, while wearing a magical necklace her aunt had given her for Christmas.) More surprisingly was that Charlee had also posted the story on here in the Red Dead tag, under the new title of Tempest’s Stone. Despite not having posted it here as FFTR. In the posted chapter on here and AO3 she included a mention of what had happened last week, including my Tumblr username (which is different to my AO3 ID) but didn’t actually tag me so I could see it in my notifs. Despite tagging me last week when coming at me for comment over the responses she’d received. She mentioned that I had given my approval for the story and that I saw no similarities to my (unnamed) work, and that any similarities were coincidental.

Seeing the anon message coming in to my inbox, about a necklace made me think I was going crazy, because I hadn’t seen any mention of any stone/necklace in what I read last week. I initially wrote all this off as just someone trying to start shit here again, so I approached Charlee to politely via DM’s to query if there had been a change or if this was just more of the same trouble making from nameless individuals. I was concerned about all this, because if I had seen any mention of a stone/necklace in what I read last week, I would have raised concerns with it right away to avoid drama falling on her going forward. The initial response I get is Charlee denying any copying.

While waiting for further elaboration from Charlee, I get a few anon messages. One of which offers to provided me with a PDF version of what was originally posted by as FFTR last week, which showed there was no mention of a necklace or stone. It was late, I’m constantly tired at the moment, I’m going through some serious shit in real life, so I wasn’t going to sit up waiting for another reply from Charlee, I accepted her response, put the rest down to being anon drama nonsense, decided I’d deal with it when I saw the PDF, logged off and went to bed. Next thing I know I get woken at 5am by my phone blowing the fuck up with responses to this issue, from Charlee and people from her side/hateful anons attacking me for daring to question the new addition to Charlee’s work.

Then I am inundated with friends of Charlee’s (on and off anon) attacking me in asks and DM’s, saying I have no right to be questioning any of this because my idea has been done before and time-travel stores are common and anyone is entitled to use the concept of a magic necklace, no one owns tropes etc etc etc. I never once claimed or implied that I “own” any tropes. Again, for the peanut gallery, I have no issue with people writing Red Dead timetravel stories! I do however, think it’s highly questionable that someone who apparently had “never heard of” my story a week ago, suddenly changes her story to include a necklace after publicly discovering my work. Also, I’m not claiming any ownership of tropes, but I do not think it’s unreasonable for me to claim ownership of a very specific alternative universe. My fic is an AU, tropes are just something that occur in a chapter but the over all fic is very much an AU, which has very specific elements. But whatever... Unfortunately there is no arguing the morals of this turn of events with these people attacking me in Charlee’s name, because when you try to question their angle of defence they just block you. (Then unblock you later on to continue telling you how wrong it is to have an opinion on your own work!) To elaborate a little on my concerns, I’ll say this... YES! Mother fuckers! I know I did not invent timetravel, or any devices used to facilitate that! Change the Goddamned record! I do however feel it is not unreasonable to have an issue with someone claiming not to know of my story one second, then just so happening to add in a plot point to their work that is the very cornerstone of my entire story, a week after admitting to learning of my work. Then on top of that, going ahead and changing the title, and posting it here -after having said they’d delete- AND claiming that I’d seen the story and approved it AFTER the changes have been made. Changes that I was COMPLETELY unaware of! Changes that would have continued to go unknown to me without an anon tipping me off! Because I was not tagged in the post that Charlee made with her story either on here or AO3, and I made it clear in my first response to Charlee last week that I do not read any fics or following the RDR fandom. The biggest issue in all this for me is that Charlee claimed I was okay with the stories content, when I was completely unaware of the changes she’d made. In the bigger picture it is also somewhat concerning to me that Charlee’s story is a reader insert, which predominantly gain more attention (especially on Tumblr) than original character fictions. Which, for the record, I have no issue with in general, we’re all just trying to enjoy ourselves with words. However, I’ll admit, I was concerned about Charlee continuing with her story in its revised form since we’re both playing to the same audience, and Charlee would have potentially been attracting a different/wider viewership on a reader insert (posting both on AO3 and Tumblr) and how that would potentially lead to people to accuse me of copying at some point down the line. For a bit of context... I have over two hundred thousand words of Wish Upon in first draft, waiting to be edited and posted. I have over one hundred and fifty thousand words already shared on AO3. There’s plenty of eyes out there to read both our work, it’s not an issue of who gets more attention or any other shit you lot would like to throw. I’d take one kudos and heartfelt comment over a 100 likes any day.  The issue is that there’s a good chance that by the time I get to publish, let’s say, chapter thirty, that Charlee could have already explored the events of that chapter of my story. Which would then potentially cause her readers to come for me, claiming my work is a derivative of hers, when in fact the story I’ve spent two years writing is already finished in first draft, and is just awaiting final editing - which I cannot do quickly enough due to real life pressures! Is it wrong of me to be concerned about and want to avoid that kind of finger pointing bullshit, after having put so much time and effort into this story? Yes, it’s possible that it was a coincidence that Charlee decided to add a stone/necklace to her story, no one can prove it one way or the other beyond reasonable doubt. However, I am not going to pull punches on this one, and I’ll say I find it extremely questionable that this change to her story occurred AFTER finding Wish Upon, and AFTER the story views on AO3 went from 1042 to 1158 (with no new kudos/comments added) between this drama starting and as I type this. Someone was obviously reading my work over the past week, and with no update/bumps on it, I have to question who it actually was and how my work was discovered since it’s way down on the recent updates on AO3.... Anyway, the bottom line is Charlee claims she didn’t copy, I claim it’s a possibility that she may have, either consciously or unconsciously. BUT I gave her the benefit of the doubt on the vague similarities last week. But like I said, this isn’t just about copying ideas. It’s about claiming I’m okay with something that I was completely unaware of, and did not give my approval to. Whatever the case, I do not think it’s unreasonable for me to have issues with what’s occurred in regard to how Charlee has handled this matter. As a result of this drama being bought to Tumblr, I have been inundated with messages. Some from strangers showing support and raising concerns for my story and welfare, which I appreciate. Unfortunately, however, I have had even more people sending me increasingly hateful and combative messages. Attacking me for daring to question Charlee (who’s apparently been in the RDR2 fandom since August) and paint me as the bad guy over the issue of these changes Charlee made of her own freewill.  My blog is now getting likes/reblogs from a bunch of people who I do not know, do not follow me, and have no reason to find my blog other than because of this drama! So it seems obvious to me that links to my page are being shared around somewhere out there and hate is being encouraged in my direction. Back to the matter at hand... Early this morning I politely suggested that Charlee come forward and make a post on her own blog, for her followers, to explain what had happened with adding the necklace and changing the title etc. While I waited for her to do that, I made a post of my own to address anyone following me who may have been involved provoking drama. Charlee decided not to make a post explaining the introduction of the necklace in her story, giving me a bunch of excuses as to why she didn’t want to, and some point today she decided to delete her account entirely instead.  I’m now getting blamed for that, with people saying I had a hand in chasing Charlee off this site. When you can count the amount of messages (all civil and even toned) I sent her/regarding her on both hands and have still have free fingers. When I logged off early this morning her blog still existed. The first I heard of her deleting was an hour ago when I came on to find yet more drama had graced my inbox/DM’s in the wake of her flouncing. I couldn’t even interact with her if I wanted to, because she blocked me last night for reasons I do not understand, after I requested she explain the situation on her blog to square all this away once and for all. (I’m happy to share the full DM’s she sent me which are not polite and seem slightly combative from her end.) If the court of Tumblr want to come hang me for being concerned and questioning someone using my story concept AFTER being made aware of my story’s content - then go ahead, because I did that directly with Charlee in private. I did not bring this matter to Tumblr. It could have been dealt with privately or just on AO3. Charlee chose to highlight this for other people to see on here, why I do not know. But she tagged her original post last week so the entire fandom could see and jump on it. I didn’t have anything to do with that, so don’t any of you faceless haters fuckin’ dare come at me saying I encouraged or orchestrated harassment over this because I had absolutely fuck all to do with it at any point!!!! I’m wise enough to know attacking someone over plagiarism is pathetic, because plagiarism is solely an academic standard. This issue would be a matter of copyright. And you cannot copyright a fan fic, because by definition fan fic is copyright infringement. You cannot copyright tropes and I have never claimed dominion over any tropes in my story. This is fundamentally a moral issue, and I do not think it is unreasonable to have concerns about someone changing their story to use the exact same elements of a story to the one I’ve been writing for nearly two years. Especially in a fanom as new and as small as Red Dead is. And THEN claiming that I’m perfectly fine with the changes they made that I was TOTALLY unaware of! But if it makes me the bad guy for not being supportive of someone who for all I know saw my idea and ran with it, then fuck it - What can I say? I’m obviously the bad guy! Go get your guns! If you can’t accept it’s an appropriate response to be concerned by seeing someone do that to your ideas (and going on to add more of them to their work after you’d  written the first concerns off as a non-issue) then it’s not my place to convince you. To the best of my knowledge I am “persona non grata” in the Red Dead fandom. I have thousands of followers, from various older fandoms since I’ve been here since 2012, but I do not interact with anyone with an interest in Red Dead beyond responding to comments on my work on AO3 and the occasional ask on my story blog. I do not have a support network on here. I do not post my work here, because every time I have it’s been ignored. I do not have fandom or followings that I can call upon to defend me, or people I can tag to come to my aid. However, I do truly appreciate that strangers out there have taken it upon themselves to alert me to what’s going on, since I do not follow fandom in any respect. However, I ask that they take a moment to consider HOW they go about addressing matters like this now, and at any point in the future, and that if anyone is still sending messages to other people on my behalf about this issue then I ask them to stop now.  It’s between Charlee and I. Not Charlee, me, five of her friends, and twenty trolling anons showing their asses! Yes, Charlee also chose to add a necklace/stone into her story after admitting to finding my work. That could have been an innocent mistake, it could have been deliberate, who knows! I gave the benefit of the doubt once, only to wind up getting shit on and attacked by people defending her actions! Yes, maybe Charlee didn’t have any ill intent with saying I’d approved changes I didn’t know about. All we have is her word, and I don’t know her from Adam. I gave a pass the first time round, only for this to end up happening. Whatever the case really is, it’s not my fault that Charlee chose to include a necklace/stone in her story after discovering my story. She claimed to never have read my work, even after being made aware of it, but perhaps if she had made that effort to read it this could have been completely avoided. It’s also not my fault that Charlee decided to publically post about the drama that kicked all this off last week. Calling her dogs to come and attack me over comments people I do not know made on her story. And finally - for all the anon’s from Charlee’s camp, or any other, sending me actual hate and shitting on my writing, and pulling the old Tumblr classic of bravely telling me on anon that I should kill myself because Charlee deleted - fuck the lot of you! This is the last I’m going to say on this matter, I am fuckin’ done with this shit. I will not be deleting my blog, I will not stop writing my story, and I will not be engaging in anyone else who wants to keep prolonging the life of this particular unnecessary bullshit drama! The facts are there. It’s up to you to interpret them however you wish, but let’s be grown-ups about it, please? We’re all just here to try and show some love to a virtual cowboy who hates himself. There’s enough shit in the world right now, we don’t need to be adding to it over a Goddamn fan-fic!

what is your least favorite modern Sonic game?

Based on the main modern Sonic games I have played as of posting this(I can’t just up and buy the newest consoles okay), that game would have to be, Shadow the Hedgehog.

I could go and talk about how the whole thing with Shadow being related to aliens feels like the writers just pulled it out of their asses, or how the intended darker and edgier approach falls flat. But those things are not the ultimate reason why I’m not very fond of this game. It’s just not a fun game to play. It’s just a chore.

Sonic Heroes may not be perfect and at best is just an okay game, and Sonic 06 may be broken and can be very frustrating at certain moments, but, I was still able to beat their main and final story campaigns. It took more patience than what should probably be required, but I still managed to at least finish them. Shadow the Hedgehog, on the other hand, is a slog to get through even when taking the easiest and most basic neutral route. Every time I try to pick this game back up I quit soon after, the game is just that frustrating and monotonous to play. The only reason I know what happens in the game’s story is due to resorting to watching cutscenes and gameplay online.

I really like it when games give you the option of having of multiple alternate endings. But it was implemented here in the worst possible way. The game being such a slog and chore would not be so bad if it at least had the courtesy to let you go back to a stage you already unlocked and branch off to another path. But no, you have to start a new game, and work from the very first stage, every single time! Each route isn’t even long in it’s actual length, especially depending on which route you choose to take, but the fake difficulty and unfair deaths will definitely make them feel longer than they actually are. It’s all just a cheap way to pad out a game that would take maybe an hour or two at most to complete! It’s not even like Undertale where your actions actually hold weight and have consequences in whatever route you take. Black Doom will keep saying that your disobedience will be severely punished, but he’ll quickly forget or not give a shit if you just continue to flip flop back and forth on which side you go with each stage. You could help Black Doom blow up an entire fucking city and Sonic will just casually talk to you like nothing happened, just as long as you choose to pursue a less villainous route right after!

Even the multiple alternate endings you could end up with don’t feel like you really earned them. Nearly every single alternate ending is just Shadow saying he’s finally got all of the Chaos Emeralds, there’s some changes in dialog and which character you may be partnered with(depending on the route you take), Shadow proclaims some conclusion or truth he thinks he’s figured out about himself, he then says, “This is who I am!”, and half the time he karate chops Eggman to death. There’s only two alternate endings that actually stuck out to me: The one where Shadow says that his purpose in life is to protect Space Colony ARK and the legacy behind it or something, and the one where it’s implied that Shadow committed suicide afterward. That’s it! All of the other alternate endings are forgettable.

Now unlike a lot of people who jump on the hate bandwagon towards the added guns and weapons, I actually like them. Not only do they make it way easier to take down enemies and their dreaded health bars, but it helps change up the monotonous gameplay a bit. Unfortunately, that’s where the good parts of the gameplay and mechanics end for me. It’s super obvious this game was made using Sonic Heroes’ engine and recycling assets from it. The levels in, Sonic Heroes, were at least mostly designed to give some leeway with the more slippery mechanics and other flaws in the gameplay. But hold on everyone! If the lack of momentum and other janky things in gameplay tested your patience in Heroes, well it comes back with a vengeance in, Shadow the Hedgehog, with levels and more careful platforming not made nearly as much with it in mind.

One last thing I think I should mention about this game, and also a good part of why I’m not really a fan of this game. For a game that wants to show you how totally darker and edgier it is, that edge is pretty dull. Outside of some unintentionally funny moments, and actually genuine sad or touching moments peppered throughout this game, it’s just overall dull. Not even the game’s music really stick out to me. Outside of the main opening theme, and the ending songs, only about maybe a handful of tracks in the game’s soundtrack really stick out to me. Tone deaf just seems to be a good way to describe this game in general.

The recycling of Sonic Heroes’ assets and character models don’t help with the intended dark and edgier approach with the game, either. Then there’s the new models they made for the human characters outside of Eggman. Commander Yaoi Hands, President Billboard Shoulders, and Insect Eyes Maria. I’ll never get over how hideous Maria looks in the game.

You know what hurts me the most about this game? Giving Shadow his own game to rap up his story arc, and explain exactly what happened back then, was a perfectly good idea and concept. With actual care put in, and having people who know what they’re doing behind it, this could have easily been a great way to actually expand Shadow’s backstory and character. But no. It’s obvious this was made and shoved out as fast as possible to capitalize on Shadow’s popularity while it was still at it’s peak. To this day I still think Shadow as a character deserved better than this.

Error is misread as a flat out hostile character who is using Obsidian for his own ends and is gonna double-cross everyone (which funnily enough was his initial characterization)
