i had a thought of "do people not know what AUs are anymore?" and then i remembered nobody explains fandom stuff to new people anymore so it is entirely plausible people genuinely don't know what AUs are and nobody has explained it to them, so for today's lucky 10,000:

"AU" stands for "Alternate Universe" or "Alternative Universe" (same difference) and is basically any thought scenario for a fandom that isn't canon and can't fit within the canon universe. If it takes place in the canon universe but something is notably different, that is typically what's known as a "Canon divergent AU," because it diverges from canon.

an AU can be absolutely anything. There's a couple of widespread pan-fandom au scenarios that often get thrown around, like coffee shop aus, genderbend aus, hanahaki aus (hanahaki is a whole thing in itself i'd recommend researching on your own), etc. One you might hear sometimes is "crossover AU" which is when you have characters from one fandom interacting with characters from another.

You can have as many aus as you want. They can be whatever you want and you can do whatever you want in them. It's a sandbox for you to play around in and explore how things would be different or how the characters would act in those circumstances or environments. Maybe they have different relationships with each other. Maybe they behave slightly differently. Or you can just say "Okay, [x] is true. How did they get here? How would things have to be different for this to occur?" which can also be fun.

If you are ever confused about why people ship something that seems completely out of the blue or doesn't make sense to you in the canon setting, there's a good chance they like it in an AU setting! Not everything everybody is interacting with is necessarily the canon! Not everybody wants things to exist in canon and just want to explore playing dolls in a different sandbox and that's okay. And their sandbox might look a lot different than yours, and that's also okay. You have the freedom to make your sandbox whatever you please. Do whatever you want forever. Get funky with it. AUs are fun.

!! I'm glad you liked them @violent138 ! I was worried it was too depressing a take for what sounded like it was possibly intended as a fluffy fix it. Like how weird would this be for Dick on his own? He's just lost his parents and this random rich Settled guy has just borderline kidnapped him and, another kid who looks a lot like him? And want's them to play with the neighbours kid who's semi abandoned and ALSO looks alot like him, the other kid, and actually like this Rich Guy? Wait, he's a What? What's a playboy? Like imagine the three of them (Dick, Tim, Jason) Launching into some kind of Conspiracy that actually Bruce is secretly their dad, and he's only just found out. Dick is furious at the implication that his mom cheated ("Well, some of the rumours say he likes men and women so maybe they all did it tog-" "aLALLAL I CANNOT HEAR YOU!!" Dick shrieks, hands over his ears and horrified at the turn in this conversation) This misunderstanding is not helped when Damian shows up at the manor, declaring himself the blood son and is clear that he only wasn't here because his father did not know about him. When challenged on how he knows he's the only blood son (because really, the others are desperate to figure this out) Damian say's because his mother says so, but an argument then breaks out over whether all of their parents knew and hid it from Bruce, (The graysons because they didn't want to loose their son to a settled life, The todds because they had no way to realistically contact bruce wayne, the drakes to avoid the scadal) and if Bruce found all of them after finding out about Damian and that's why he found all of them - because discovering one secret child meant he went looking and found a bunch of others.

Time-warped or travel scenario where Bruce gets launched back into a younger version of himself with all the memories and the first thing he does is goes and gets Dick Grayson right after his parents' death, then pick up Jason, arrange about a million playmates to get Tim out of his house, and once he has those kids happy and taken care of, he goes off to find Cass, helps Steph with her dad, and leaves a very pointed voice-mail for Talia.

Alfred thinks he's more mentally ill than usual for knowing exactly which orphans and as he pointedly reminds Bruce, "children whose parents are still very much alive" he's trying to steal and adopt.

Bruce heatedly replies that they're his kids and that he's going to do everything right this time, rendering Alfred absolutely speechless until Bruce asks if Alfred would be able to make dinner for his new brood of kids.

It's always so weird to come down from the biology heavens to see what the average person believes about animals, plants, ecosystems, just the world around them. he shuffles out of his apartment and strides to the door next to his own, knocking irritably. even if it was almost three in the morning, there’s footsteps padding up, the door opening to reveal you—eyes sunken, bags under your bags, feebly cradling your little baby as it wails for seemingly no reason.

all of john’s frustration is out the window the moment he notices your exhaustion, like you’d gotten even less sleep than him.

after a few hushed words drowned out over your baby’s cries, he offers to hold it. you hesitate at first, but in all honestly, it was your last resort. you’d tried bottles, breastfeeding, pacifiers, music—every possible option. this was the best you’ve got.

at first, john holds it wrong, and you correct him by bringing his palm behind your little one’s head to support its weight. you jolt when your baby reaches for the big man’s muttonchops, your heart dropping. you didn’t want to upset him even further.

but instead, he stops you, letting your baby fist his beard in a weak grip. you expect a grumble of disapproval, or a frown when your baby tugs, but no. john is smiling.

There are two things you need to know, here.

First: There’s a style of Greek pottery that was popular during the Hellenic period, for which most of the surviving examples are from southern Italy. We call them ‘fish plates’ because, well, they’re plates, and they’re decorated with fish (and other marine life).

They’re very cool. We’re not 100% sure what they were for, because most of the surviving ones were found as grave goods, but that’s a different post.

The second thing you need to know is that when we (Classics/archaeology/whatever as a discipline) have a collection of artefacts, like vases, sculptures, paintings, etc. and we do not know the name of the artist, but we’re pretty sure one artist made X, Y and Z artefacts, we come up with a name for that artist. There are a whole bunch of things that could be the source for the name, e.g. where we found most of their work (The Dipylon Master) or the potter with whom they worked (the Amasis Painter), a favourite theme (The Athena Painter), the Museum that ended up with the most famous thing they did (The Berlin Painter) or a notable aspect of their style. Like, say, The Eyebrow Painter.
