okay I'm going through my screenshots from KCD2 (I ONLY took close to 4000, teehee. (I am mentally ill about this game)) and like. it's dawning on me how often Hans is trying to get Henry away on his own like my god.

I think it's very clear from the get-go that Hans is lowkey (maybe even high key) crushing on Henry, what with the awkward "Let's strip!" moment to spend time in the pond together.

Then on the way to Nebakov the first time after Trosky, Hans is telling Henry of a hunting spot, basically saying that after they're done talking to the lord and doing their tasks, he wants to take Henry hunting there.

Then much later when Hans is freed from Maleshov and after Raborsch, he has some space to breathe while Henry is being ran around some more. Eventually he will mention a hunting spot he found and wants to take Henry there with lots of wine. ("Wine, bacon, wine, the deep woods, a quiver full of arrows, wine!")

At some point you can even go with him to this hunting spot as an activity, there's some fun dialogue on the ride, but it's just a quick battle and then back to the Devil's Den.

But anyways I think it's just kind of cute that Hans constantly just wants to have a hunting trip with Henry :( y'know just 2 bros, alone, deep in the woods with some wine, right??? Also it's clearly showing that the hunting trip with Henry in KCD1 was a HUGE moment for Hans, like he keeps that so close to his heart, he wants to do it again with Henry.

thinking about orvs metatextual engagement with its genre and specifically how that interacts with its women again. kim dokja is a self insert for the reader - what he thinks is largely meant to represent what we think, especially in the beginning before sing shong really fleshes out his character. kim dokja sees the world through tropes, directly acknowledging the genre around him and the cliches we expect e.g. the overpowered mc, the scheming villain, the beautiful heroine.

but a major part of his arc is deconstructing this reductionist view of the world in a way that parallels the author's deconstruction of the genre, and that plays really well with the way orv writes women. yoo sangah is perhaps the best exanple - shes introduced as the heroine, a one-dimensional pretty girl who in any other novel would become kim dokja's love interest. but the authors allow her to be her own character, directly challenging the stereotype of the heroine and calling attention to the genre's typical lack of depth for such a character. i think this undercurrent plays in the background often but really comes to the forefront when yoo sangah reminds kim dokja of her putting pepper in their bosses' coffee, a memory kim dokja had supressed because it didn't fit with the pretty girl persona he made for her.

i interpret that moment as yoo sangah pushing her way out of the mold of heroine often found in these stories, demanding a depth be added to her character, asking kim dokja - and thus the reader - to see her in her entirety, to see the heroine archetype for what she could be. orv is at all times in conversation with its genre, and its simultaneous writing of female characters with agency and depth and acknowledgement of the tropes these women are expected to fulfill is undeniably a part of that. and its a part i enjoy. most of the time.

hans after being beaten by henry in their little archery contest after meeting him literally earlier that day and calling him a traitor who should be punished and chased out of the town: her e you can have my . Bow… yeah take it i don’t want it anymore lol

Ever since doing those white queen gifs, where a big part of the character Tom McKay plays is as a guardian and stand in parent figure to the son of his romantic interest, who’s very much in a Hans-esque role of basically being this persons soulmate, but because of political marriages and war, can’t be in each others lives - and the kid is basically their son that they raise, together, but apart, as tides of war and power shift and ‘Henry’ becomes an outlaw, and has to flee, or the kid has to be in his protection somewhere safe.

So I just can’t get out of my head the idea of. Henry getting involved in the Hussite wars, potentially on an opposite/evolving side than Hans, but essentially sharing custody, though being mostly apart, from Hans’ son Hynce. Him living with Henry for years at a time growing up because it’s safer, hidden. But tides shifting, Henry straying further from the nobility and getting more involved with Zizka and having all these conflicting loyalties, and maybe like, finding the kid whose basically been kidnapped (Henry will later tell him it’s a habit of his fathers, so he shouldn’t be embarrassed,) and is technically a hostage for whatever Henry’s side may be, but he just goes, fuck that, and drops everything to get him back to Hans.

And so it’s Henry and Hans’s son, who isn’t his son, but undeniably is, going on a cross country medieval road trip to reunite the family.

And Hans sees Henry for the first time in years walking in Rattay and he’s bought his son - their son - back to him and just. Falls in love all over again. And can’t believe it, and can barely hide how much he’s missed him, how he aches so much just seeing him.
