loved the most recent make way for ducklings chapter! We know how much Matty loves target and I was laughing at the eventual maternity jeans comment and when he was wondering if George was noticing his new rounded butt🤣 looking forward to the next instalments!! Thx for writing these.
Hi!! Thank you so much for reading!! I'm so happy to hear that you enjoyed the newest chapter! I was feeling a little insecure after I posted it, so I'm extra glad to hear you liked it!!
Target is such a vibe, every English relative I have is always SO EXCITED to go to Target anytime they visit, last time my 17 year old cousin was in town I literally took him to Target three times in two days and he was just as happy each time (I also got him a shirt with the Target logo on it for Christmas and I have never seen a happier teenage boy lol) I was like "What do you want to do now? *lists fun options*" Him: CAN WE GO TO TARGET?!
From what I understand, IRL Matty also likes Target so it seemed important to include a moment of Target wonderfulness before things all implode in the next few chapters 😈
Thank you so much for reading, your support and taking the time to send me this lovely ask! I greatly appreciate it! I hope you had a great day and that you are having a fabulous week!
❤️Ally

Nick HeadCanons: Kissing
bf!nick x male!reader
Tumblr media
requested by: nonnie 🎀
disclaimer: this is all fictional and based on my own conclusions.
warnings: short & sweet, suggestive, top!nick.
💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋
✤ he’s definitely an amazing kisser.
✤ his lips are so pretty and plump. he’s constantly using lip balm, so they’re super soft as well.
“fuck your lips are so soft”
“thank god for space camp”
✤ the first kiss with him might be awkward because of nerves, but after a few times you’ll swear his lips were made to kiss yours.
✤ he’s not too quick to use tongue, but when he does he absolutely loves it, he’ll suck on your tongue as well. he’s a freak for real, wanting to explore your mouth, he just loves how you taste.
“what? why’d you stop?”
“nothing, you taste like chocolate”
✤ he’s a certified lip biter! he’ll nip at your bottom lip when kissing, often pulling on it when he pulls away cause the loves the way you whine.
✤ he’s always staring at your lips, loving the way they move when you speak. usually he can hold perfect eye contact, listening intently to everything you say, but now all he can think about is kissing you.
“babe, are you even listening to me?”
“mhm…can i have a kiss, pretty boy?”
✤ he loves making out with you, he thinks you’re the best kisser. you’ll be in his bed cuddling watching a movie or show together, and next thing you know your mouths are moving together as he’s hovering over you.
✤ he loves to come wrap his arms around you from behind while you’re busy doing something, and pepper sweet kisses all over your neck, causing you to get distracted.
“niiiick, the eggs are gonna burn if you keep doing that”
“so? we can buy more eggs”
“you’re relentless, you know that?”
“and you love it”
“oh shut up”
✤ he’s definitely the type to moan while kissing, the more heated it gets, the more sounds this man is making.
✤ he loves to have his hand around your throat while kissing you, he’ll squeeze ever so lightly, loving the way you gasp.
“you’re so naughty, smiling while i choke you. you like having my hand around your throat? hm?”
✤ he can’t get enough of your lips, every time you pull away he’s chasing for more.
“baby, just one more, please?”
“i could kiss you like this forever”
✤ he’s very handsy while kissing. he’ll run his hands up and down your sides, or grip your waist. he’ll rub and grip your thighs, or squeeze your ass. depending on how far you’re willing to go, he’ll even palm you through your pants.
✤ he always take the kisses further, he’s quick to move down and kiss at your neck, sucking on your sweet spot. his favorite thing is leaving marks all over your perfect body.
“you look so pretty marked up like this, all mine”
✤ he’ll never admit it, but he loves butterfly kisses, they make him melt and he turns into a blushing mess.
✤ he’s a slut for forehead kisses, they make him feel so petite and loved. he loves giving them as well, he’ll kiss the top of your head when he’s holding you.
✤ when he’s the big spoon, he’ll kiss behind your ear and across your shoulders softly as you fall asleep.
“good night baby, i love you”

“He’s been gone too long.” You paced your living room with your phone in your hand.
You were speaking to yourself, of course, given that your boyfriend was out on the town yet again doing God knew what. You knew he kept secrets, he always had. Just getting him to talk about what music he liked or what movies he liked was like pulling teeth. But of course, it wasn’t always like that. There were more goods than bads so you were willing to put up with his distance and fight and poke and prode to get him to tell you something of substance because he knew you.
He loved to hear you talk about your life. Your childhood, family and friends, work. He liked to hear you talk about your favorite shows and books, ranting about what stupid things your beloved fictional characters were doing and how you knew they were smarter than that. He asked you about school and sometimes brought food to your campus if he had time before he disappeared on some job. He’d leave a few hidden notes before he left too - usually under your pillow, in your wallet, and under your favorite bowl. You once found a note between pages of your book, his own anticipation of how far you’d get while he was gone.
Problem this time around was that there were no notes this time. There was no text or voicemail. There was no explanation. Admittedly, it happened sometimes. Sometimes it was so sudden he didn’t have time to let you know anything, but even then, he was never gone that long.
This time around, before he left, you noticed some odd things. You noticed more hushed conversations, hidden phone messages, darting glances, looking over his shoulder. He spoke even less than usual, as if he was building a wall between you two. Looking to put distance. You noticed his phone was being turned off when he left the house and a few times during his absence, you could’ve sworn you’d seen him running into the local museum.
Usually you could shrug off his odd behavior because, overall, Marc Spector was an odd man. You knew his life had been challenging and naturally, it closed him off in some regards. But shutting you out completely, going radio silence at the drop of a hat, that just wasn’t like him.
So you did some digging.
Given his phone was off, you couldn’t track any sort of locations from there. You didn’t know who he worked with when he left, save for one woman named Layla who was often as off grid as he was, so you couldn’t ask anyone. He hardly talked about family and you weren’t even sure he had friends other than you so that was a dead end. The only real starting point you had was that museum.
When your last class ended, you hopped on the crowded bus and headed over. You were welcomed by the man at the front security booth and wandered the vast space. You had to squeeze past tour groups and couples on dates, kids running around with novelty swords and replica headpieces. You squeezed between people until you found a bench that allowed you to breathe, despite the heavy crowd. You hadn’t expected it to be quite as busy and you were so tired. Just as you were about to give up, you saw him.
The spitting image of the man you loved. Only his clothes were different, baggier and plainer. His curls fell across his forehead more and he seemed to hold hismelf shorter than Marc. Maybe it wasn’t him after all.
You sighed to yourself and headed towards the exit, catching a small snippet of his voice. It was softer, tinted with an almost fake accent, with more inflictions than Marc had. You shook your head slightly as you headed out, trying to clear the idea of the doppleganger from your head but the notion seemed to keep you around the museum. You found yourself sitting on the steps outside, near a streetlight so you could try some of the assignment you needed to finish. You hadn’t even realized how long you had been there until your headphones beeped in your ears that their battery was low.
As you were putting the headphones into your bag, you noticed Marc’s doppelganger heading to the nearby bus stop. He noticed you at the same time and made his way over to you, which made your body run hot for a moment.
“Hello.” He smiled slightly. “I, uh- I saw you inside. Can I ask why you’re still out here?”
“Yeah, it looks a little weird, huh?” You laughed, trying to contain the whirlwind of thoughts set off by the man’s voice. It was so strange to hear such a soft, relatively hesitant tone coming from a face that you knew to be much more confident. “I just thought I saw someone I’ve been looking for… Turns out it wasn’t him.”
“Old friend?”
“Boyfriend, actually.”
“Oh…” He nervously wrung his hands and you almost laughed at how out of character that movement seemed. “Wait, why are you looking for your boyfriend?”
“No reason.” You shrugged. “Just thought I saw him.”
“Right… Well, are you alright to get home? It’s not like a… “we’re in a fight and he kicked me out” situation?”
At that, you did laugh.
“I’m alright, thanks.” You shook your head with a smile. “But if you hear about a guy named Marc coming around, tell him Y/N needs to talk to him, yeah?”
“Marc? Uh.. Alright, yeah. Yeah, okay. You said Y/N?”
“Mhmm…”
“Have we…”
Your brows raised while the gears turned in his head. His eyes darted around your face, down to your clothes and back to your eyes while he tried to put the pieces together. He opened his mouth to say something before he shook his head, seemingly confusing himself in the process.
“You okay over there?” You asked carefully, leaning in slightly for your own examination.
“Yeah, just… I don’t know. Deja vu maybe.”
“Hmm.” You nodded and leaned away. “What’s your name, anyway?”
“Steven.” He tapped the pocket of his jacket and you saw a little pinsized hole for where you assumed his nametag usually sat. “Steven Grant.”
“Cool.” You said simply. But you recognized that name as one of the characters that Marc told you about, from one of the things he used to watch with his brother that turned into their own little roleplaying game. And maybe it was a coincidence but something was strange. “See you around, Steven.”
“Bye, Y/N.”
A few days went by before you saw him again. You had tried going by the museum but he wasn’t there. You even asked the man who watched the cameras and he said that Steven - though he called him by some unrelated name - hadn’t been in since the night you met him. You were at another dead end.
You wandered the streets when you got a vague text with an address. It was an unknown number and the relatively common text style gave you no clues. Automatically you assumed it was Marc from a burner phone. Who else would it have been? With as much of a hurry as you could without drawing extra attention, you made your way to the apartment.
You gave a quick knock to the door and it popped open, seemingly on its own since no one was on the other side to greet you. You wandered the cramped space, finding a bed in the center of a sand circle, books stacked on books on every table, a small trashcan overflowing with crumpled balls of tape, A vast fishtank stood in the middle of the room and you leaned in to see the fish, a small thing missing a fin, and caught glimpse of the man watching you from the other side. His near sudden appearance made you jump and bump your head against the glass.
You mumbled an apology to the fish as he scurried to another corner of the tank and you stood straighter.
“You’re the one who texted me?” You asked simply, not wanting to take a guess if it was Marc or Steven that stood before you.
“Yeah.” He said in the same plain tone and you didn’t catch any accent. It was definitely Marc. “Heard you were looking for me.”
“Wouldn’t have to look if you would’ve told me where you were going or that you were alive, at least.”
“”Yeah... I never meant to worry you.”
“Clearly.” Your brows raised quickly. “Nice place.”
“It’s not mine.”
You made a small noise in your throat before wandering the space a bit more. You peaked through some of the books, finding a book of French poems by a woman who you knew Marc didn’t read. But someone Marc knew and worked with did.
“This Layla’s place?” You asked simply, swallowing the rising bile in your throat.
“Layla?” He asked, arms crossing over his chest but not moving from his spot. “What makes you say that?”
“The French poems.” You said honestly. “Not to mention all the Egyptian stuff, you having a fake accent and working at the museum in the Egypt wing… It’s a lot to do just to be a good partner.”
“Right… Look, about all of that..”
“You didn’t answer my question.” You cut in firmly.
“I’m trying to.”
“No you’re not. You’re avoiding. You’re choosing a piece of what I said rather than the actual important part.”
“This isn’t Layla’s place, okay?” He rolled his eyes slightly.
“So this is your place?”
“Sort of.”
“Sort of.” You repeated with a scoff. “Right. So, what, it belongs to that fake persona I talked to a few nights ago.”
“Fake?”
“Steven. Come on, that accent? And he’s named after that thing you told me from you and your brother… Did you think I was stupid?”
“What do you think is going on?” His brows furrowed.
“Well, I have a couple working theories.” You said with a shrug as you dropped to sit on the edge of the bed. “One is that you’ve been cloned. You know the American government, doing experiments with soldiers and not telling them.”
That one made Marc chuckle.
“Not a clone, baby.” He smirked. “But keep going.”
“Okay, good to know.” You nodded. “Second is that you’re just working.”
“That all?”
“Well there’s the idea that you’re cheating on me but…”
“But what?”
“But if that was true then I’d have to leave your ass and I don’t really want to do that. Which is why you’re gonna tell me right now if that’s the case or not.”
“And who would this mystery woman be?”
“Layla.” You shrugged.
“Layla?” His brows raised incredulously, almost insulted that you would say that.
“You have her favorite poet on your desk, Marc. You two constantly go off on little excavations and jobs. She’s cute, fiery, not afraid of challenge, just your type really. Not to mention, you’ve been pretty close since you met.”
“You know why we met.”
“Yeah but did you ever tell her? I bet she wouldn’t fuck you if she knew you killed her dad.”
“Wow.” His eyes went wide. “You had that one ready, didn’t you?”
“Well you’ve been gone for a while. I had some time to come up with some good ones.”
“Y’know what…” He pushed his tongue against his cheek with a small scoff, as if something just came to him. “Yeah.. Yeah, I’ve been sleeping with Layla. Every time I ‘go to work’ I’m just meeting with her.”
“Hmm, funny.” You offered a sarcastic expression. “Just tell me what’s really going on.”
“I just did.”
“And I don’t believe you.”
“Course you don’t.” He mumbled and ran a hand down his face.
“Wanna say that again?” You challenged sharply, daring to close the distance between you two. You glared up at him, ignoring the fact that the height difference made you less intimidating than you were aiming for, but you stuck to your guns. “Or do you want to say something else?”
“I love you.” He put his hands on your shoulders and turned you around. “But there’s the door.”
“You son of a bitch.” You twisted out of his grip and spun again to face him. “You don’t get to kick me out after you tell me you’re cheating.”
“You’re the one that said you’d walk out.” He shrugged.
“If you two shack up here, then I'm sure she has some clothes here. Bathroom products, maybe. Toothbrush? Hair brush? She’s gotta have some underwear here at least, right?” You kept pushing as you stepped deeper into the small apartment in an effort to mate Marc couldn’t throw you out.
“Y/N.” He sighed and followed after you.
“Just tell me the truth.” You stopped and spun quickly to face him, almost colliding with his chest as he was coming up behind you. “Because I’ve never felt so alone. These few weeks without you have been like my world is falling apart. It’s gut-wrenching to wake up without you. No calls, no texts, no little notes around my place…”
His heart twisted when he realized how much he had been hurting you.
“You’re right… I’m not cheating on you.” He admitted with a sigh as his eyes fell to the ground.
You breathed a small sigh of relief and reached out to take his hands in yours. His thumbs ran back and forth along the backs of your hands. You gave them a small squeeze and he managed to meet your eyes again.
“I… Jesus, this is gonna sound nuts.” He sighed.
“I'm listening, Marc.” You said softly.
“You won’t believe me.” He shook his head.
“I believe you love me. And I love you. I believe you thought you were being noble and protecting me, but I always feel safer and more protected when you’re with me. Just be honest and we can work it out.”
“I serve Khonshu.” He said suddenly, as if it was his only chance to get the words out. “He saved my life before I met you and my servitude is how I repay that debt.”
“Khonshu…” You repeated, an expression of uncertainty on your face. “Is that the Egyptian moon god that looks like a bird version of Jack Skelingtion?”
At that, he chuckled and it brought a small smile out of you.
“Pretty much.” He laughed and nodded.
“And Steven?”
“That’s a longer story.”
“So let’s go home. I’ll make some food and we can talk about it.”
“You sure?” He gave your interlocked hand a small pull so you were chest to chest. He guided your hands to rest on his shoulders while his found their place at your waist. “You’re about to find out how much of a trainwreck I really am.”
You shrugged slightly. “Good thing I’m in it for the long run. I’m gunning for your last name eventually so I better buckle up, huh?”
“God, I love you.” He grinned.

16, 14 and 8 for the writer asks 🙏🏻
Thank you for the ask!! The ask list is here if anyone else wants to see it =) You've done a dangerous thing and let me decide what fic to talk about, so I'm going to go with Roadkill because a) I love her, b) I've been thinking about Roadkill a lot lately, c) it's been almost a year since I published it and d) there's more coming for both The Big Light and Learning How to Lose a Thing I Never Laid a Hand On, but do feel free to ask me to answer these or other questions about those fics or a different one.
8. Did you cut something out of the outline or an early draft? What was it and why did you decide to cut it?
Roadkill had no outline or early draft. There was one draft that is 78 single-spaced pages, typed in 11-point font in Microsoft Word that I barely edited. I think I ran spell check and grammar check then ignored most of the suggestions. Every big idea I had for Roadkill is in it. There was dialogue that got cut along the way, but it's been so long that I don't remember what it was and I didn't save it. There was going to be more about fictional!Matty trying to detox at home, I think, and maybe there should have been, but as I've said before, I'm very conscious of the fact that some of what I write exists on the edge of 'misery porn' and I'm trying not to write miserable stories.
14. Talk about the fic's opening scene & how you approached it.
The opening scene of Roadkill was the first part of the fic I wrote, and is as it is for a couple of reasons. The first is, of course, the song "Roadkill." The fic was inspired by the line, "140 when I last got weight and I'm gonna lose more by Saturday," so they're in Texas because of the song. I was also getting ready to drive across the country when I started the draft and therefore thinking a lot about driving across the US and the idea of big sky country and the limestone fence posts in Western Kansas. The Great Plains are beautiful, but theres a particular kind of emptiness to those freeways that very much influences those fist 1500 or so words. Also, I had been craving that bright yellow, American movie theater microwave popcorn for like six months, so, that's what that's about. You can't tell me that popcorn is bad.
16. Talk about the fic’s biggest moment & how you came up with it.
I think that the biggest moment among a lot of big moments in Roadkill is the bit kind of towards the end where things come to a head with fictional!Matty's disordered eating and using and fictional!George gives him the option of a detox unit or getting clean at the studio. I think that was the natural place for the fic to go at that point. Fictional!Matty had been hospitalized several times, relapsed, been to rehab, and nearly killed himself at that point so there was nothing left for him to do. He'd hit rock bottom over and over again and there was no where else for the fic to go except up. I think I also had the ending written by the time I wrote this scene so I knew where I was trying to take things and this fit.

Hi! I happened to be on the Taylor and Matty reddit and aside from discussing the usual stuff, I noticed a few interesting things that reminded me of your theory.
1.Travis called himself Jabroni several times. And turns out it’s a term from wrestling. Wrestling?? Same as kayfabe, your theory. If it's just a coincidence, it's the biggest coincidence that has ever happened to this world.
https://www.reddit.com/r/taylorandmatty/comments/1cvskm5/ok_so_travis_keeps_calling_himself_a_jabroni/
2. Several theories from twitter that went there to reddit that Taylor is making her own version of The Truman Show. And I remembered that I saw a similar theory based on the Matty and the 1975’s show.
https://www.reddit.com/r/taylorandmatty/comments/1cswvn1/taylor_matty_and_the_truman_show/
https://www.instagram.com/p/C4_69NQsyT3/?igsh=eWptdmd3eWQ1NnF3
https://www.instagram.com/reel/C5AttiyOOv7/?igsh=YWNiZHVlaGM2M3Fp
3. Florida. It seems this is the only song that no one fully understands. Taylor said something like Florida is just a place where people escape from law, but she also originally said that folklore and evermore are fictional stories, so now I always take her explanations with a grain of salt. And The Truman Show was filmed in Florida, so this all refers back to the same theory. And the mention of Florida also appears in Fortnight.
Either reddit is just making me crazy, or it can't be a coincidence, there are too many overlaps for it.
Plus, after Taylor’s concerts started again, it all got even weirder. Overly obvious staged photos of Taylor and Travis, articles about engagement, strange song mashups that I can't believe don't carry any message. I used to think that if your theory turns out to be true, then all this will last until the end of the eras tour, but now I don’t see how it will last so long when so much has already happened in less than a month. Again, maybe I’ve just read a lot of theories, but it feels like something is coming
Hi anon! Wow, this is quite a question to tackle! Maybe to save space I'll throw it under a cut.
There we go! I did notice the "jabroni" talk! Which definitely appears to be a wrestling term, specifically. Devil's advocate! Regardless of any kayfabe, it seems like the man is a fan of wrestling so might've just picked up some of the lingo… it is a pretty popular form of entertainment in America, but who knows! Maybe it's a hint that he will end up a jabroni on behalf of Matty. Here's what I will say about that… the moment I saw Matty's face next to Taylor's, before knowing virtually anything about either of them, I said to myself, wow... this pairing has the power to completely shatter a lot of harmful narratives you hear about women from the manosphere… which so happens to be the very thing Matty was critiquing or tackling with ATVB. But I'll stick a pin in that thought for now and revisit it another time, perhaps... I digress!
To add to the Truman Show theories, Matty has referenced The Truman Show on occasion! Here's a yet-archived clip from circa 2014 where he confesses to thinking it was real:
Pair that with this quote from the New Yorker piece:
"The Truman Show," in which Jim Carrey plays the unwitting, lifelong star of an always-on reality series, came out when Healy was nine, and he developed an intrusive fear that the movie was, in some way, about his own life. His parents were actors—what if everything was a loveless farce? On a vacation in Spain, in a taxi, his dad teased him about this ongoing neurosis, and Denise turned around from the front seat and told Tim to stop it. "She meant, Don't wind him up, he's obviously freaking out about this," Healy explained. "But I read that as one actor saying to another actor, 'Hush, you're going to give up the gig.'"
It seems this warped sense of reality due to fame is just another thing Taylor and Matty likely share in common.
I transcribed Taylor's quote on Florida!:
"Florida is a song that I wrote with Florence + the Machine and I think I was coming up with this idea of like, what happens when your life doesn't fit, or your choices you've made catch up to you? There's just… you're surrounded by these harsh consequences and judgment and, and circumstances did not lead you to where you thought you would be, and you just want to escape from everything you've ever known. Is there a place you could go? I'm always watching like, Dateline… people, you know, have these crimes that they commit where they immediately skip town and they go to Florida, you know, they like, try to reinvent themselves have a new identity, blend in, and I think when you go through a heartbreak there's a part of you that thinks I want a new name, I want a new life, I don't want anyone to know where I've been or know me at all. And so that was kind of what… That was the jumping-off point behind, where would you go to reinvent yourself and blend in? Florida!"
I'm happy you see the strange coincidences, too, anon! I agree that it feels like something is coming. I feel like some kind of bombshell awaits us in the Rep vault! And I hope you're right that we won't have to wait until the end of Eras, but it truly could be that the storytelling is wrapped up in Eras and the re-recordings. I suppose we'll see! Thanks so much for the ask, that was a fun one! 🤍

If you have the time
Mathew Murdock x reader
Sum: Dating in your adult life isn’t as simple as fiction makes. There’s clashing schedules and little lies that keep it going. The key is to find the time to be together.
AN: From a request made for our favorite New-Yorker (Sorry Peter). I tried fluffy, I tried dialogue, I suck at both. Let’s see what this combo has made.
Tumblr media
We all make and give little lies every day of our lives. Whether it’s smiling at customers you don’t want to or saying that some burnt food is really good. No one is truly innocent. Not you, and certainly not the lawyer on the other end of the line.
“Honey, I’m sorry.” He says, using the old married couple nicknames. He feels bad. “I need to go over final statements and Karen’s taking the night off…”
“Mathew, it’s fine. Work has me swamped too, a night to catch up would actually help me a lot.” You say, clicking away the ‘are you still watching?’ Netflix displayed instead of your show. “We can try again some other time, just don’t stay up too late.”
“You too, get some sleep, and not with the TV on.”
“But the seasons almost over…”
The first few times you were lying when the “it’s fine” crossed your lips. But back then the honeymoon stage of your relationship was still present and glowing. When you were just content to be in a relationship with someone. The same way that a new friend becomes your best-friend for a few weeks before your schedules start to get in the way.
Eventually everything is, in fact, “fine.” Being half-awake when he appears at your door, when the English language is hard to speak that early. And your date is literally just sleeping against him before both of your days start. Or when you stop by his office on your lunch with food for the four of you, a little hang out time before going back to your own life.
Soon body-heat in the morning, quickies in the office and phone calls when you remember weren’t enough. Matt was like having an indoor-outdoor cat who was also staying with the neighbors. Nice to see them, nice to cuddle with them, but you were only a small part of their life.
This was never more evident then your visit this afternoon. Almost a week without a real conversation together except for rescheduling and promises to get together soon. His head tilting to the side when the office door opens.
“It’s me,” You say, adding your name to the announcement. “I was hoping to catch you before you disappeared for the night.”
“It’s only,” One hand slides over the other wrist. Feeling the special made watch. “Four-thirty. I don’t disappear until at least seven.”
“Which is why I’m here early.” You say, stepping closer into his space so his hand can reach out towards you. His arm anchoring around your back without thinking. “So you can’t escape me this time. Are you busy?”
“No actually, our client took the deal. Now I’m just having fun with little details.”
“So, what I’m hearing is, you’re free? For, like, a walk or something?” You ask. At this rate of cancelling and rescheduling there was no point in trying to hide your wants.
His smile comes, looking in your general direction. “I’m not letting you blow me in the office again.”
“An actual walk, Mathew. I’ll walk you home, we can hold hands, I’ll make sure nothing happens to you.” You say, ready to list off more.
It’s lucky that you got to when you did. Pretend all he wants but with his bag against his leg and coat within grabbing distance, he was maybe twenty-minutes away from leaving for the day. This proven only by how quickly he had everything gathered in the time it takes you take a step back, waiting for him by the door.
The closest Matt has to sight is through the paths he takes regularly. Specific smells and feeling of the ground under his shoes never seemed to change while the people might. And even then there are constants in those people. Like the man who is always smoking when he passes or the woman who doesn’t understand that, with perfume, less is sometimes more. This time around the only constant were the cracks he stepped on without fear of tripping. In the end, he was the one guiding the hand holding adventure. While you, only now, realized what he had said back in the office.
“What did you mean by ‘letting me’ blow you in the office?” You asked, ruining the pleasant atmosphere of too many people.
“You instigated the interaction, and I consented. But you started it.”
“Don’t you use lawyer talk with me. It takes two to tango, Matty.”
“I was seduced,”
“Fuck off with the Catholic stuff, too. We’ve done so much more then that.”
It’s easy to guide someone who isn’t paying attention to begin with. While you continued to ramble about how much of a catholic whore Matt was he slowed the walk to an almost crawling. Continuing just enough to find the crosswalk. The light had just turned and the wait for the next one started.
Matt couldn’t tell the future just from feeling, holding, your hand. But he could take guess what you were feeling or how you were feeling from it.
Your pulse was calm and normal. Only slightly speeding up when his thumb slid over your palm or pulse point. Finding the ends of your nails and feeling them chewed down further then normal. Something was stressing you out, maybe it was your work or the extended separation.
It’s only now that Matt feels bad about his dedication. If you hadn’t popped in he’d be in the gym by now. While punching, or moving through the rooftops, every bit of focus had to spent on the now. Maybe a little bit of his brain knew that you were still out there while he was in uniform. Only way to explain how he always ended up in your neighborhood.
“Lights green, Matt.” Your voice is almost distant while he’s deep in thought.
“Oh, I didn’t see it.” He says, walking you both across the street.
There’s a food truck that parks a few blocks from Matt’s apartment. It’s always the same person at the window, a woman with a soft voice and a few younger men behind her. Matt hears little bits of a southern accent when her voice breaks through the rest of the noise. The food smells Mexican, maybe some other mixed dishes splashed on the menu, too.
“What’s that smell?” Matt asks, although he knows the answer.
“Good smell or bad smell?” You ask.
“Good smell. Food and spices.”
“It’s probably the food truck across the street. You hungry? I got it.”
One failed attempt at pronouncing Spanish later and you sit at picnic tables next to a truck. The vegetables have been in the fridge for a while, same with the meat. And the spices had an under-layer taste of salt from the workers sweat. It was delicious.
“What does the lady at the window look like?” Matt asks.
Your chewing, which was loud and appreciative a few seconds ago, almost completely stopped. Making an “mmm, mm,” noise as you tried to swallow the food.
“She has a ring, Matty. I’m sorry but I think she’s taken.” You say, taking another bite with your own little laugh. But do as he asks anyhow. “She looks about late-forties to early fifties. Purple shirt with a slight V-line. I think she was wearing jeans, but the apron was covering it. There were stains on them, too. The shirt and apron, I mean.”
That was enough of the physical description, to satisfy him but you somehow seemed lost in the task.
“She’s slightly smiling at everyone at the window. But it’s gone when she turns around to the truck. She was really grinning when you tried to say your order. Like, I think she thinks you’re sweet.”
“I am sweet, thank you very much.” He shakes his head but smiles anyway. “This truck is here all the time. I’ve smelled it, hear the lady talk for years but I’ve never had anything here.”
“That’s probably because you’re poor.” You say, “Now, you have me. Your food sugar-mama.”
“I’m probably going to have to share you with Foggy.”
“Hell no. I’m not fucking with Marci. I’ve seen how hard her hugs are.”
Tossing trash in the garbage it was only a few more minute walk to reach Matt’s building. Stopping just before the first step.
“This is you, all safe and sound.” You almost announce.
“Thank you, for the escort.” He says, your still clasped hands squeezing. “I’ve never felt safer.”
The kiss is quick, but just a hop above chaste. He tastes like spices and pop. You tasted the same, but with the tiniest bit of your lip-gloss long since worn off.

Note
hello there!! As one does during quarantine I was thinking about how certain fictional characters would act now in the time of a global pandemic and no sports or social gatherings. So naturally I started to wonder what Killian, Emma and the rest of the totbl gang would be doing during this time since there's no nhl and in 2020 Emma and Killian have 1 1/2 year old mattie so I wanted to hear your thoughts!
Tumblr media
Oh my god, anon. I love this. And I’ve been hoarding this for a couple of days because I’ve been thinking about what, exactly, they would do. Because you’re right, Matt would be young still and I think it would be a little chaotic and a little overwhelming and-- here’s a list of things. Let’s all assume this exists in that weird AU of the AU, the one where Will and Belle adopt a kid and this kind of stuff happens too.
Matt’s been on his feet for awhile at this point, but being confined to one space, means he’s a terror on two legs. He tottles around everywhere.
Usually with one of the mini sticks he owns.
He owns an absurd number of mini sticks.
There are shootout competitions regularly staged in the living room.
Killian is really good at making the “crowd goes wild noise.” You know like ahhhHhHhhhhhhhH.
It consistently makes Matt laugh.
Which consistently makes Emma’s heart explode. Metaphorically.
Emma also gets really into baking. Like, competitively. Mary Margaret is constantly sending recipes and Ariel is secretly really good at it and Will posts photos of the bread he and Belle make.
So, Emma gets into it.
And for the most part she is...not the best at it.
But she and Killian have fun finding ridiculous things and he swipes flour on her cheek and she leaves handprints on his team-branded merch.
And neither one of them acknowledge the other swiping batter.
They have fun with it for the first two weeks or so.
Until something goes wrong with the baking and Matt won’t stop throwing stuff and--it is a lot. An 18-month old is a lot in an apartment and Emma knows Killian misses playing and Killian knows Emma misses the game.
So, it’s not quite an argument per se, more like some tears and dramatic exhales and all three of them end up falling asleep in the living room.
Things get a bit better again after that.
They bake some more and watch old games and Emma’s always had a soft spot for sci-fi movies and Killian’s got this weird documentary passion they’ve never really talked about.
So they alternate stuff and talk to Matt like he’s retaining any of this knowledge.
They have video chats with the rest of the team. Who also demands Matt is on the chat.
Really they want to talk to Matt. Killian points this out one time. Will shrugs and says “yeah, obviously.”
And it’s not always perfect and they get on each other’s nerves, but they also kiss a lot and spend a ridiculous amount of time with their kid, which is something neither Emma nor Killian could ever be upset about, and when things do end Mr. and Mrs. Vankald show up.
So they can give Matt a new stick.

5 SECOND REVIEW:
Tumblr media
SADIE BY COURTNEY SUMMERS
You can find the Goodreads summary here.
Goodreads rating: 4.27
THE GOOD:
* did I expect to like this as much as I did? fuuuuuck no * dark and depressing and gritty and raw and oh my lord, I could NOT put it down * I absolutely LOVED the idea to include a narrative thread in the form of a podcast - honestly, please consider giving this a try in audio form, it might be absolutely amazing * it’s been a few days since I finished it and I. Cannot. Stop. Thinking. About. It. * quick what-is-it-about: Sadie’s sister Mattie is found dead and Sadie embarks in a journey to find her killer; her steps are retraced in present day in the form of a podcast * I love books that have a sibling relationship at their center (particularly sisters) and which show the length that sisters go to in order to protect each other * Sadie is probably one of the best main characters I’ve ever read about and I honestly want to just take her, bundle her up, bury her in teddy bears and shield her from the world * Courtney Summers pulled all the stops - she deals with poverty, abuse, addiction, neglect, trauma and she makes it all very, very real
THE BAD:
* I honestly don’t have a single bad thing to say about this book, it will haunt me for a long time
Special mentions: trigger warnings for sexual abuse, drug abuse, violence, pedophilia
YAY or NAY: literally just pick it up, it’s absolutely a must read
Favourite quotes:
“I wish this was a love story. A love story about lovers whose mouths meet like two puzzle pieces fitting perfectly into place, about the electric feeling of one person's name on the other's tongue because no one has ever spoken them out loud like that before. About people who spend the night together looking at the stars until entire constellations exist within them. Everyone is perfect in that indistinct way most characters are and every perfectly constructed scene in their fictional lives is somehow more real than anything you've known or lived. Love stories, romances, leave a person secure in the knowledge they'll end Happily Ever After and who wouldn't want a story like that? I wish this was a love story because I know how it goes in one like mine, where the only moments of reprieve are the spaces between its lines.”
“People don't change. They just get better at hiding who they really are.”
★★★★★
To everyone who got this far, thank you for reading and have a wonderful day! Also, feel free to share your thoughts, comment or tell me anything :)
Buy it from the Book Depository :)
If you liked this stupid review, consider buying me a coffee because it keeps me warm :)

mr matty mckibben
Tumblr media
i am in love with matty mckibben. i have been sleeping around since my breakup with my boyfriend of three years about three months ago, and lemme give you the rundown about that.
eventually i will get more into the blake situation, but basically it ended because I needed space to be nineteen and figure out what i really want in a husband, so immediately after we broke up i did the opposite of that.
i drove to christians house. christian is someone i have had a massive, matty sized crush on for months, and when i had the opportunity to be with him, i took it. I drove there and had the best week of my life: fresh out of a breakup, living my best life, sleeping with my matty, and loving it. he ghosted me because “i made him want a relationship and he isn’t in a place to have one right now” which i totally understand because i am in the exact same situation, but he thought it would be better to be alone and single and wild than be messing around with one person and be single and wild. I get it.
after christian, i needed to get over that heartbreak, so i found the nearest guy that i knew would sleep with me, and so i did. that is when i realized that sex is better when there are feeling involved.
after him, i slept with a coworker while i was wildly obliterated, and now im in his friend group so go me, but we are never sleeping together again and i need to make sure he knows that.
after him, i slept with blake, my ex, again, looking for something i know damn well i didnt have with anyone else, besides christian.
after blake, i slept with tanner, this amazingly attractive man i met at hangout festival that goes to the same college as me, and we dont talk anymore really.
after tanner, i slept with coworker tim’s best friend. he does not know, and it will remain that way until we become better friends and share things like that. i dont know if anyone shares things like that. I just know he has feelings for me, and i know his friend doesn’t. his friend was sexually just like christian, but he is not christian, and no one i have ever met is.
christian is overwhelming. he is captivating and attention grabbing and beautiful and sexy and compelling and absolutely addicting. he is a frat boy and he spells trouble and complications but i am in it with him, he is my matty.
i understand that i have been wilding a little more than i want to to stay true to myself, so now that this show is back in my life, i have decided to wait for  my matty again. not christian exactly, but someone who makes me feel the way he and matty make me feel. I realize i am talking about a fictional fucking character, but i do not care. since i was eleven, matty made me imagine a beautiful boy that i am captivated with choosing me and choosing me every day, over everyone else. I am waiting for my matty. i am not sleeping with or dating anyone that does not make me feel the way matty does, the way christian did. he makes me literally sQEUAL like a little girl and he makes my heart beat so quickly when he smiles or laughs. i am waiting. for. my. matty.

The disk sailed across to little Mala'klea who did catch it expertly. Beaming, she said, “Thanks, Mom!  This one is for Molly and her team.  We have more and can make them for anyone else that wants one!”
Mister Makle observed, “That is more than I have heard you say even when you were drawing up the boat plan.”
Mala'klea, cringing like she expected to be hit, looked about fearfully, and went silent.  Pele crouched beside her daughter and pulled her into a hug.  Mala'klea hugged back fiercely, tears leaking from the corners of her eyes.
Pele spared a look for the shocked Recycle and Maintenance people in the big office.  Still holding her daughter, she told them, “Klea was one of the children that Mister Angerson was caught beating for refusing to pray to his God during their schooling time.  Instead of teaching them math, he was trying to force the children to follow him in his suicidal mania that he calls a religion.
“He was particularly brutal to those kids that he called pagans.  Since my little Klea follows our family's polytheistic beliefs, he beat her the worst of all.  The station's doctors found two cracked ribs and a hairline fracture of the right radius.
“Mala'klea refused to give in to his assault but he did manage break her trust in most people.
“Mister Angerson has been formally required to surrender his teaching duties and stay away from the children.  He has been forbidden to ever touch or speak to any of them.  His own wife and two children moved into our apartment to get away from him.  Trisha has filed with the station's Executive Committee for a divorce.”
One of the men from Molly's Maintenance crew said, “I know about the schooling problem.  I was on the jury.  What Angerson did sickened us all.  He claimed that God Himself ordered him to discipline the children for their unbelief and that God's orders override the Colonial Charter.  We all disagreed.  The verdict was unanimous.”
Molly volunteered, “That idiot Marcus cornered me once and tried to convince me that we are doomed.  God sent us all here to die by slow starvation for our sins.  Seems that we are all to be the Sacrifice For The New Covenant to preserve all of  mankind's colonies in space.
“He seems to forget that both the thymine and lysine that are our last real stumbling blocks have been spotted from orbit, even if they haven't been isolated to any particular organism yet.  In the meantime, the plants and animals that we brought along are filling the gap.  We will find what we need someday, probably soon.”
Pele nodded to Molly then gave her daughter another hug and asked her, “Do you have any sort of plan or working drawings for the boat that Mister Makle mentioned?  What are you thinking of making it out of?”
Everyone watched silently as Mala'klea went fearfully to Mister Makle's desk and, darting glances all about, brought her mother the pages of sketches.  She took one of the flying disks from Cora and wordlessly handed it to her mother as well.
Pele's eyes lit up and she sat cross-legged in front of Mala'klea and patted her lap.  Looking meaningfully about at the other adults for silence, Pele said, “This is a wonderful start, Klea.  Please tell me about it.”
Mala'klea began almost inaudibly, “We can use old filter disks and rectangles to make the planks.  See, Mother?  The big side planks are the same width all along their length.  By keeping the angles of the side to bottom planks the same, it is just a long four plank dory, the same way that the old Polynesian voyaging ships were built.”
Mother gave daughter a quick hug and prodded, “How will you make the planks out of the smaller pieces, Dear?”
Mala'klea answered more confidently, “To make the flying disks we had to make a glue out of Moreson's eels.  Because of the messy way that they come apart when we heat them, we call them Goo fish.  We had to try several ways to get the glue right.  We had some of the disks stick together by accident.  That gave me the idea for laminating the parts.”
Pele nodded in happy seeming approval.  “Very observant, Klea.  How will you hold the planks and ribs together?”
The other children of Cora's Crowd almost bit their lips to keep quiet.  Cora stopped one of Molly's crew from speaking by whispering, “We have seen this before.  This is how Pele helps Mala'klea to stop being scared.  Let Klea answer for now.”
The man nodded understanding and held his tongue.
Mala'klea almost eagerly told her mother, “We can get strings from the mussels that grow almost everywhere on the Station's docks.  Cora figured out the glue and filter thing but it was Jason who thought of the string.  It was Matty that thought of making a boat.  I put their ideas together.
“We can use string that we make from the mussel threads to tie the parts together.  Once we are ready, we can laminate more skin over the joints to waterproof them.  We can lock the ribs into place the same way.  It is only a little different from the way that you were putting together the latest big Polynesian ship that you and your friends were building back on Earth.”
Pele grinned at her daughter, and looking her in the eye, pointed out, “Those planks and parts will need to be trimmed to shape, and many holes drilled in them to tie them together.  How will you manage that?”
By now, Mala'klea was answering eagerly and openly again.  “Jason and I made some knives and other tools out of Strong's shark teeth!  Jason brought them down here to show to Mr. Makle.  We can cut and trim the glued skin with them.  We made an awl that can make the holes.  When you were making that big canoe, you had a bow drill thing to make the holes but I couldn't remember how to make one.”
Jason silently handed a roll-up of knives and other tools to Mala'klea who unrolled it to show her mother.  Pele took the time to examine each knife and tool carefully.  She thoughtfully tested edges and checked the orientation of the natural serrations in the fangs that the knife and tool edges and points were made of.  One tool was made from a piece of flat bone with fairly coarse teeth carved into it for spreading and forcing glue into the skin.  The tool had the sheen of a waxy coating worked into the bone.  They all had handles formed of many layers of the skin and glue.  Each handle was carefully formed to fit the hands of the children.  Pele even examined the leather of the roll-up.
Nodding with a smile as she felt the softness of the leather, Pele asked Mala'klea, “Is this made out of some of the Strong's skin with your oil from the Goo fish worked in to soften it?”
Mala'klea smiled at her mother and said, “Yes, mother.  Mikal Novotnoy thought of doing that.  We all worked on different parts of it.  It is stitched with the mussel string.  We needed something that would keep the tools sharp and save us from getting cut on them.”
Pele gave Mala'klea another hug and stood up, holding the child's hand.  She said, “This is a really well thought out project, Klea.  I especially like the way that you gave credit for ideas to the others. I think that this ship will make a great project.
“It will need you children to do a lot of math to figure out the details. You will need good language skills to present what you figure out to the rest.  We can use this project for a big part of you kid's schooling.  It will make a perfect demonstration of the relationship between what you are taught in class and the real world.  It will also be more fun than any lessons should be.”
Mr. Makle thoughtfully consulted his computer, accessing the Public Announcements.  Looking up he said, “You kids don't need to worry about Mr. Angerson any more.  He is forbidden to even come near to any of you, including his own family or your projects.  If he tries, we can lock him up.  The Executive Order implementing the jury verdict of child abuse was posted about four days ago.”
Pele looked over at Mr. Makle and asked him, “How can we keep him away from this project?  It will need a lot of room to build it and, because of their time in the classrooms, the kids won't be able to work on it all of the day.”
Mr. Makle looked cheerfully at the children of Cora's Crowd and said, “Maintenance will contribute building space for it down on Maintenance Dock C.  Its access ways all lock.  As soon as you are ready for the actual building to begin, let me know and I will formally reserve it for you.  Due to the suspicion of sabotage to the Reverse Osmosis Desalination plant, we have been given the authority to forbid access to ANY unauthorized personnel.  We can arrest trespassers if necessary.  C Dock is already equipped with surveillance cameras and alarms.
“We installed the locks, alarms and cameras because we are storing those new fiberglass boats that you have been making for us down there.  If we do have a saboteur, those boats could become a prime target.”

the new all the kings horses is so good!! my jaw dropped when he switched back to thinking of him as matthew instead of matty because thats what he called him earlier when he didn't trust him. i feel so bad for matty though 😭😭😭
AHHH thank you so much for reading! I hope it was worth the wait and I apologize again for taking so long to post it. My body was being very rude and falling apart on me. Thankfully I think I'm better now (even though I did accidentally set my alarm last night for 4:30PM instead of 4:30AM so I was rather late for my 6am riding lesson lol)
Poor Fictional!Matty is really going through it. He thought he was giving Fictional!George space because that's what HE likes / wants when he is injured/unwell and also is absolutely shitting himself that he is now expected to travel and go to all these horse shows this summer. That's not what he signed on to do, he hasn't shown properly in YEARS and he basically got ran out of the sport before. And now Fictional!George is accusing him of stealing medication?! (He didn't by the way) and also for setting him up to steal his rides on the horses (also did not do)?! Like he thought Fictional!George loved him and he was thinking maybe he loved Fictional!George as well and instead he has somehow managed to get his heart broken standing in the aisle way at his place of employment.
AHH I'm so glad you noticed that bit about calling him "Matty" vs "Matthew" it was a switch that I know people noticed but didn't comment on when it first happened and I was so excited for it to flip back to "Matthew" when things went south. If you can believe it though, the outlined version of this chapter was set to be even more devastating but then I back tracked a little and was like "Ally chill." Thank you so much for reading and for the continued support! I hope you continue to enjoy this fic and that you are having a wonderful Wednesday and a fantastic rest of your week!

Ahoy friends! Well now...hasn't it been an age since I updated my own bloggy space thing. Hmm...curious choice, Stevens. Bold strategy to not remind the world on a 17th platform what you've been up to professionally. Let's see if it pays off...I could play the busy from work / kids / only so much digital time in all our days card(s). But I've already wasted enough time and keystrokes. Note to self: Keystroke - potentially fun rejected Batman villain, digital enemy who messes with peoples correspondence in digitally reliant 21st century... OK then! Everything is making much more sense now. SO, wanted to get back on the blog horse by sharing this new podcast series I'm a part of. Yes, I know I am part of a lot of podcasts that a lot of other guys like me are also a part of, and there are half a million podcasts, blah blah...here's the thing; I think the ones I'm involved with are...wait for it...GOOD! And are worthy listens in the space we make them in. And this series, as part of the new SHAWSHANKED! podcast for POD617, is fun, easy listen. Each week, with my buddies Georgie Kipp, Uncle Buck and Matty Blake (radio partner on WAAF) we find some pop cultural elements we've been Shawshanked by (hooked on and can't stop rewatching and discussing, kinda like every time you pass by Shawshank on TNT), and discuss freely, nostalgically, nonsensically and joyously. If the fun we have comes through your speraker of choice then mission accomplished. Visit pod617.com /shawshanked for past episodes (the greatest fictional movie athletes draft is a peach). OK...the particular series that led to this now absolutely rambletastic post is our Top 50 Male Movie Stars podcast series. Over 5 parts, each counting down 10 actors, we rank in our unqualified esteem, the top 50 male movie stars of all time (since movies had sound). This episode marks the halfway point, counting down actors 30-21, and I think it's solid pod. Hot pod action. I deliver an impassioned plea for one actor in particular who, while not technically an FBI agent, has remained relevant, watchable and entertaining for over 30 years now. See if you agree...or else tell them I'll kill them all! I'll be sure to post and share all the entertainment related goings on in my inembriated bumper car torunament of a career in this very space. Yes, I'm still on weekdays, 3-7p, as the Not Matty part of MATTY & NICK on 107.3 FM WAAF, Boston. Yes, I'm a part of the COVER 2 podcast with Don Banks, talking all things NFL each week on Patriots.com. Yes, there's plenty to come this season from yer ol' pal Fitzy (@fitzyGFY) on TownieNews.com (but def give the social a follow, more there than ever!) Perhaps the fantasy sports, dad talk and puns aplenty ion the form of THE INACTIVES w/Matt Ufford will return this fall (professional obligation pending). And yes, new SHAWSHANKED! episodes weekly or as often as possible. And please - stay tuned for a fun new show I hosted for Discovery Channel that I can't talk about now or else I'll be in truble but they'll still likely air it soon but I dunno something corporate. For anything personal, like my twitter or IG which is mostly food pics and my adorable kids (how orig) follow me @ahoynickstevens. K? Well now, wasn't this fun? Felt good for me. Nice to be back in my space. And a quick thought to share a podcast on my not even remotely updated often enough blog turned into about six hundred words-plus on what I've been up to. Might be easily the most Nick Stevens post ever. Good to see I've got it. Whatever IT is. Enjoy the podcast! Love you! Byeeeeeee! What am I, 14?

some of these scream fictional!matty and i would love to see your take on 5 and 12
Thank you for the ask!! This is a brilliant promt list and I've reblogged it here.
Here's 5. "I'm way too sexy to fuck this up," and 12. "It's ok, I saw this on TikTok," for things to say before doing something stupid.
5. "I'm way too sexy to fuck this up."
"I'm way too sexy to fuck this up," Matty decides, meeting George's eyes in the hotel mirror and brandishing scissors and tugging at his dripping hair. He's wearing only boxers, he's a little bit drunk and a little bit stoned, and he'd found a pair of scissors when he was going through his bag and he can't help but think that this is a brilliant idea.
George offers an incredulous expression.
"I am. What could go wrong?"
George scoffs and says, "Matty, there's a reason that there are so many home haircut horror stories."
"Yeah, but they're not me," is Matty's argument. "And, like I've said, I'm way to sexy to fuck this up."
"You're giving yourself bangs. At least do it in the morning when you're sober."
Matty turns so he can actually look at George, arguing, "I've had some wine. And those tequila shots. And the weed. But it's fine."
"Alright," George sighs. "You do whatever you want."
"Will you still love me if I give myself a bad haircut?"
"I'd love you if you shaved your head."
Matty grins and closes the space between them so he can wrap his arms around George, still clutching his scissors, and give him a quick kiss, then says, "You're sweet," then returns to the mirror.
Matty organizes his still wet hair so that it falls over his forehead, considers for a moment, then cuts, clumps of dark hair falling into the hotel sink. He pauses for a moment, considering, then snips off a little bit more hair, considers again, then snips again. He scrunches his new bangs, then turns back to George, who's made himself comfortable on the bed.
"What do you think?" Matty asks.
George pretends to consider, then says, "Well, I still love you, so that's something."
Matty sets his scissors aside and joins George on the bed, settling half in his lap and pouts, saying, "Now say something nice to me."
George leans forward and kisses Matty, rather than saying anything. When they separate, he says, "You're very pretty and I really love you and your bangs will probably be fine."
"I appreciate the vote of confidence," Matty says, faux upset. "Maybe I should go sleep with Ross. He'd be supportive."
George tightens his grip on Matty's hips, but says, "If that's what you want."
Matty laughs. "You're possessive," he teases. He lowers his voice to ask, "How upset would it make you if I was in another man's bed? If another man touched me, put his hands on me?"
"If you wanna go share a bed with Ross, go for it," George answers, doing his best not to feed into Matty's pushing. "I hear he snores, though."
Matty laughs again and agrees, "God, he does. I think I'll stick with you."
"Oh, you will? That'll be hard for you, won't it?"
Matty hums, nodding, and goes in for another kiss, long and slow. "I think it probably will be hard," he agrees. "Really, really hard."
George sighs. "That was the wrong word, wasn't it?"
"Yeah, absolutely the wrong word. You should have know I would take that and run. That's on you."
"At least you admit it."
"I am a very humble person, George," Matty says, putting his best serious face on. "Exceedingly humble."
"Fifteen minutes ago you were saying, and I quote, 'I'm way to sexy to fuck this up.' I don't think that's humble, love."
"That's entirely different," Matty argues.
George combs his fingers through Matty's drying hair and pulls him in for another kiss. That's better than going back and forth saying yes and no. Matty is too stubborn to cave and George doesn't really love the back and forth.
"Is that your way of saying I'm right?" Matty asks.
"If that's what you think," George answers. "I don't wanna go back and forth."
Matty shifts, getting a little more comfortable and resting his head against George's chest. "Thanks, G," he murmurs.
"For what?" George asks, voice now soft and half worried.
Matty shrugs. "Everything. Just bein' you."
"Makes me worry when you start sayin' stuff like that," George murmurs.
"Sorry," Matty offers. "I just need to thank you more often, I think. I love you and I don't think I say it enough."
"You do," George promises. "You do. I know how you feel, what you think."
Matty intertwines his fingers with George's and says, "Good. You should."
12. "It's ok, I saw this on TikTok."
That's some noise, like the sound of furniture being moved, then a clatter, like something being dropped, then George hears Matty's muffled voice, likely swearing and he decides that he should probably figure out what Matty is doing. He's gotten progressively more bored and irritable as the lockdowns have been instituted and extended and there's been some emailing back and forth with the powers that be as George has tried to work things out so that they can get out of London and hide out at the studio. He hasn't said anything to Matty yet, not wanting to get his hopes up, but, on second thought, maybe a distraction would be good.
In their shared office space, Matty has several opened Amazon boxes and he's moved his own desk away from the wall. He's spread a drop cloth on the floor and taped off the outlets, and there are more painting supplies on the floor in company with the Amazon boxes.
"Hey," George offers. "What're ya up to?"
Matty whirls around to face George still standing in the doorway, a bit sheepish. "It's ok," he tries, clutching a still packaged paintbrush. "I saw this on TikTok."
"That's comforting, Matthew, thank you."
"George," Matty whines. "It's completely fine."
"Forgive me if I don't believe that, love. You remember when you decided you were going to repaint the kitchen? We redid the kitchen," George counters. He pauses, then adds, "I know you're bored, but you and DIY don't really mix."
Matty groans, dramatic. "I am bored. I'm so bored. I know it's serious, but I thought we'd be on tour right now and I'm so bored."
"I know," George repeats. "But is gutting the office a good idea?"
"I'm not gutting it. I'm gonna move a bunch of shit around and, you remember that TikTok I sent you? The one with the accent wall and furniture? That's what I'm gonna do."
George nods slowly, recalling the barrage of videos Matty has sent him since he discovered the app. "I do remember that, vaguely. I'll ask again: is this a good idea?"
Matty tosses his paintbrush aside and sighs, "I'm so fucking bored, George. I can't do anything. Can't see anyone, can't go for a walk, can barely open the fucking window, but I can online shop and fuck up the office."
"I know," George says, yet again, and accepts Matty hiding his face against George's chest. "Let's, uh, think about this, though, yet? You can do whatever you want with the office, but let's have a plan, 'k?"
"I had, have, a plan," Matty protests, voice muffled.
"I don't not believe you," George agrees, "but I have an idea, ok?"
Matty steps back and looks up at George, asking, "Is it a good idea? Better than whatever the hell I'm doing here?"
George chuckles. "I think it's a good idea."
"'k," Matty agrees.
"Well, I was thinking that maybe we go up to the studio. We'd get outta London, have a little bit more room to breathe, go outside, go a little less-"
"Mental?" Matty interjects.
"Well, I wasn't going to say mental, but, uh, yeah, I guess."
Matty nods. "'s a good idea. I like that idea. Can we do that?"
George smiles, saying, "Yeah, I think so. I've been workin' it out."
"God, you're brilliant," Matty says. "Really. Absolutely, completely brilliant. I'm gonna return all the Amazon shit."
George laughs. "Gonna let the office be?"
"For now."

The Art of Escaping by Erin Callahan
"But I didn't have to, because Mattie made it okay. More than okay, because that's the magic of Mattie. She resides at that strange little way station between stark reality and larger than life fantasy. She wants so much more than just-the-facts-ma'am. She lives for those miraculous moments when you stumble upon something that's somehow truer than the truth."
Year Read: 2018
Rating: 4/5
Context: I received a free e-ARC through NetGalley from the publishers at Amberjack Publishing. I requested this book based on a recommendation from Roberta at Offbeat YA, who had a chance to beta read it. Check out her blog for a post talking about that experience or her exclusive cover reveal!
About: When Mattie is faced with a summer without her best friend, she screws up her courage to ask the cantankerous, reclusive daughter of renowned escapologist, Akiko Miyake, to be her mentor. Soon, Mattie is immersed in a world of lock picking and underwater escape tanks, but her braver alter-ego is threatened when Will, a popular basketball player from school, witnesses one of her escapes. Worried that he'll tell everyone, including her parents, about her strange hobby, Mattie and Will strike up an uneasy friendship based on mutual secrecy and learn that sometimes, our secret selves are the truest ones of all.
Thoughts: This is contemporary YA very well done. Callahan is a solid story-teller, and the novel is well-written and well-paced with a cast of interesting, believable characters (and some LGBTQ representation). Most of the tension in the novel is self-inflicted from Mattie's insistence on keeping her new life a secret, but I enjoy plots that don't take drama to extreme heights. Mattie and Will feel like people I could have known in high school, and their problems deal mainly with acceptance--self and otherwise.
One of the major themes is authenticity, and that's a great angle to explore in YA fiction. Mattie is frequently preoccupied by this question: how to be a real person in a world where teenagers are expected to do extracurricular activities just to pad their resumes. It's the Holden Caufield question approach on a much less obnoxious level (I can hardly stand The Catcher in the Rye, even while acknowledging its merits). I remember being very concerned about this in high school, and it makes Mattie easy to relate to.
She's so middle-ground that it's refreshing. Mattie isn't the best student or the worst, but she has a few things that she really loves. Will's chapters were a little more trying for me. I understand his love for twenties slang, but it's distracting in the way it litters his narrative. I don't know if this is a thing that actually bothers teenagers, or if I'm just an old woman stuck in a younger person's body, but it tries too hard to sound hip. That aside, I like Will, and I like his friendship arc with Mattie even more. I also enjoy the resistance toward mean high school girl cliches; even the minor characters feel well-rounded, and there are no flatly wicked pretty girls trying to ruin everyone's lives.
There's barely a hint of romance throughout the whole novel because the characters are distracted by much bigger questions than "does that person like me." Mattie and Will's friendship, and their secrets, provide them an outlet for testing out new, better, and more authentic selves, and it's a fascinating and well-drawn process. They give each other the space to become who they really are. Having the courage to be yourself is a major part of growing up, and Callahan's portrayal is realistic, sometimes funny, and often heart-warming. Plus, who doesn't love a good escape act? I'd absolutely recommend it for fans of the genre, and I’m going to need a physical copy for my library when it’s published.
