the dagger squad having a bet whether you and rooster are hooking up or not and how they find out😁
Because Bob was the first to call it. Just mentioning off-handedly to Phoenix after seeing the way Bradley’s eyes lingered on you for a second too long as you looked up at him through your lashes. “Those two are sleeping together. For sure.”
And Phoenix usually trusts Bob’s killer instincts, because he is rarely wrong, but this time she’s all, “No way! I’d know. Trust me, if they were fucking — I’d know about it.”
When actually, Bradley had you once bent over her bathroom counter with your fingerprints left all over her mirror — and she still didn’t know. Actually, she’d gotten into the car less than five minutes after Bradley was done buckling his belt back up and she hasn’t even noticed your discarded underwear on the floor behind the driver’s seat. Actually, she hadn’t even noticed that on the night Bob had made that declaration — when you and Bradley had crashed at her place, that the two of you had been oddly okay with sharing her pullout couch in the living room.
Fanboy’s the next to jump in on that bet, and he’s with Bob, because Bob’s never wrong but also a little bit because he swears that one time when he had dropped his fork on the floor at a restaurant that he had seen Bradley’s hand sitting a little too high on your thigh under the table.
Payback jumps in on the bet next, and he’s opposing Fanboy purely out of spite because the last time that he believed Mickey they had ended up taking a wrong turn that caused a twelve hour delay on a trip to the mountains. Plus, he figures that Rooster’s not your type.
Jake’s nosey, and he’s quick to get in on the bet once he hears of it. Of course, when Jake’s in, Javy’s in too. They’re uncharacteristically siding with Bob, they’ve both seen things that make them have their suspicions.
The bet continuous for a couple months, with everyone almost forgetting about it. Until Bradley’s surprise birthday party. When Javy drunkenly stumbles into Rooster’s bedroom while looking for the bathroom, and shrieks — almost excitedly rather than horrified.
Rooster’s quick to try to cover himself, catching hold of his jeans and trying to tuck his dick away while his friend just stands there with the door wide open. “Javy, what the fuck, man?”
You scramble up from your knees quickly, wiping at your mouth, eyes wide and fully ready to bribe your fellow pilot. “It’s not what it looks like, I swear.”
“It looks like Phoenix owes every body money!” Javy calls out loudly, leaving the door open as he turns and walks away from you— honestly more pleased about winning the bet than he could ever be worried about walking in on you.

Out of the Mouths of Babes — Chapter 2

Chapter 1 on Tumblr
Prompt: “Uncle Ron said something about Harry knocking Ginny up, but I don’t know what he means,” Teddy said.
************
"They can't be serious…." Harry muttered in disbelief as he stared down at the very official-looking letter.
"Who's serious about what?" asked Ginny, stepping into their living room.
Harry jumped and quickly tried to hide the letter behind his back. "Nothing!" he squeaked.
He should have known better. Ginny got a mischievous glint in her eye and darted around him, trying to get at the letter. They spent a minute chasing around each other, but eventually Ginny faked him out into tripping over the coffee table, and she quickly snatched the letter out of his hand with a triumphant laugh, making Harry once again wonder if she wouldn't be even better at Seeker.
"Ooooo," Ginny sang dramatically as she saw the emblem at the top of the parchment, "an official statement from the Wizengamot! Have they come up with a new award to bestow on you?"
"No, it's even worse," mumbled Harry.
"Oh, well now I'm very interested," Ginny teased, "am I worthy to take a peek at such official correspondence between such important people?"
"Well, it actually concerns you too, Missy," said Harry, crossing his arms, "so go ahead."
"Hold on, let's see if I can get the right tone." Ginny cleared her throat, pointed her nose in the air, and continued in her haughtiest tone,
"To the esteemed Harry James Potter,
After consideration of your actions to serve and protect the Wizarding World of Great Britain, as well as the recent discovery of your lineage to the Ancient and Noble House of Peverell, previously thought to be lost, it is with great honor and pleasure that we offer to restore your line to its former status by bestowing upon you one of the vacant Lordships!?"
Ginny dropped her character and her mouth gaped open in disbelief. "Along with the accompanying seat on the Wizengamot!" she finished quickly.
She looked up at him with wide eyes, and her face split into a wicked grin and Harry knew he would never hear the end of this.
Harry snatched the parchment back.
"Yeah, so in other words," he began before she could start getting her jokes in, "they're embarrassed by how many of their seats are still empty after half their members were thrown in prison or fled the country for being Death Eater collaborators, so they're once again trying to use me as their poster boy so they can look like they've turned over a new leaf. Except they clearly haven't, since they only deemed me 'worthy' after they found out which dead pure-bloods I'm descended from, so they're still the same navel-gazing, inbred aristocrats they've always been!"
By the time he was finished, he was shouting and he panted to catch his breath.
Ginny, however, still found the whole thing hilarious.
"Oh, it breaks my heart to see Lord Potter so displeased," she bowed low to him with a flourish of her hand. "Let me know if there's anything a lowly peasant like me can do to serve you."
"Yeah, yuck it up, Weasley," said Harry dryly, "Like I said, this affects you too."
She looked back up at him with a sardonic look. "How does your having to sit through long parliamentary bullshit have to do with me?"
"Well," said Harry, stepping toward her, "if I'm a Lord, that means that, if I ever get married one day—"
"Hypothetically speaking," said Ginny.
"Yes, then that hypothetical girl — whoever she might be — would become a Lady."
"Hmmm," hummed Ginny thoughtfully. She wrapped her hands around his neck and he snaked his arms around her waist. "So you think this is relevant to me because you're hoping to make me your Lady? That's mighty presumptive of you, Lord Potter."
"Well, I wouldn't say hoping," lied Harry. "It's just a logical possibility to consider, strictly because you're pure-blood, of course. But I'm still keeping my options open. After all, you know how much of a ladies man I am."
"Yes, of course. But you know…" said Ginny thoughtfully, tracing circles over Harry's chest with her finger, "'Lady Ginevra Potter….does have kind of a nice ring to it."
"Oh, but things would be expected of you, m'Lady," said Harry, "and you would definitely have to stop all that Quidditch nonsense. Such a vulgar and violent activity is beneath a woman of your standing."
"Oh, well, I guess that's settled, we have to break up," Ginny sighed, "We're just a part of two different worlds."
"I'll always remember you," said Harry romantically, "but alas, I must kiss you goodbye."
He bent down and gave her a kiss, then they broke apart as they cracked up into laughter.
"Come on, I'm not going to let anyone call me a Lord," said Harry, rolling his eyes, "and obviously I'm not actually going to sit on the bloody Wizengamot. Those seats are transferable, so I can give it to someone who will actually know what they're doing. My first instinct is your dad, but he probably won't want it either, and they'll do anything to get him off again. Andromeda would probably feel at home there, but could do some good. Or maybe McGonagall."
Ginny groaned. "You can be so boring sometimes, you know that? You have a chance to put Luna in a position of power, that would drive them insane! Oh, or how about Aberforth, that would be hilarious!"
Harry laughed. "We're not all agents of chaos like you, Gin. I swear, sometimes I think you're Eris in disguise."
"Oh, you think I'm a goddess?" Ginny flirted, "then I guess you better worship me."
"Hmmm," Harry kissed her again, but then sighed and pulled back. "Sadly, there's no time for that, we're already running late for dinner at the Burrow."
"Alright, should we go together or do you want to keep up the pretense that we're actually living in different flats?" she asked him pointedly.
He gave a weak, embarrassed smile. "I know it's ridiculous, and I might be a coward, I've just managed to escape your mother's disapproving stare so far in my life, I'd like to keep it that way as long as possible."
Ginny rolled her eyes but led him by the hand out the door of their flat, past the wards they had put up. Harry wrapped an arm around her waist, and turned on the spot, feeling the squeeze of Disapparition.
*********************
"Come on!" urged Ron, "I'm hungry!"
"What else is new?" laughed Hermione, as she finished a letter she needed to send and tied it to Pig. After she sent the little owl on his way, she turned around to see her fiance standing by the fireplace, bouncing on his feet like a child on Christmas morning.
"Honestly Ron," said Hermione, shaking her head, "one would think you haven't eaten in a week, and there's no way that your mother even has dinner ready yet."
"Yes, but her pre-dinner scones should be coming out of the oven right now!" said Ron cleverly, "And I might as well have not eaten in a week, don't pretend like I'm the only one who's sick of our sad attempts at cooking."
"Alright, alright!" said Hermione. She joined him by the fireplace, threw some floo powder into the grate, and together they stepped into the green flames.
"THE BURROW!" Ron shouted clearly, and after the spinning sensation and flashes of various fireplaces, they stumbled into the sitting room of Ron's childhood home.
Ron's excited smile faltered when they saw the sitting room completely empty, with no one there to greet them. He recognized the overlapping voices of his family instead coming from the kitchen, and with a rush of horror he feared that his precious scones were already being eaten by an army of Weasleys. He led Hermione by the hand across the room towards the kitchen, and he started to make out individual voices.
"I just don't understand why they haven't told us!" said his mother.
"He probably knows what we're likely to do to him," grumbled Charlie.
"You've been away too long, brother mine," chuckled George, "I guarantee you she's the one keeping it under wraps."
"In any case, we know that pushing the issue will do nothing but make things worse," said Ron's dad gently, "We just have to—"
"Scones ready?" asked Ron loudly as he and Hermione entered the kitchen, and Hermione had to resist the urge to swat him. The conversation he had interrupted seemed interesting, and her suspicions were confirmed (and her curiosity inflamed) when all talk instantly ceased the moment they walked into the room. Six heads snapped towards the arriving couple as Molly, Arthur, Bill, Charlie, Percy, and George widened their eyes in surprise and fear, like they were caught discussing something covert. Hermione also noticed how a few of them (mainly Ron's two oldest brothers) then narrowed their eyes venomously at her and her boyfriend.
While the kitchen of the Burrow was usually one of the warmest, most welcoming rooms in the world to Hermione, she noticed a distinctly cool, tense atmosphere this time. She looked sideways and saw that even Ron had clearly noticed, his eager smile slipping from his face.
There were several seconds of silence as the older family members' eyes all flittered between each other, holding a silent conversation that Ron and Hermione didn't know how to join. Then the loud ding of the kitchen timer made them all jerk suddenly.
"Wow, do I have great timing or what?" said Ron proudly, trying to ease some of the tension in the room, but some of his laughter died in his throat. His stomach didn't let him dwell on it, however, as Molly bent down to take the scones out of the oven, and the sweet, fresh smell filled the kitchen.
After she put the plate of scones on the table, Ron casually flicked a cooling charm over them before grabbing one greedily. The other Weasley men took their own, but they looked more like it was just something to do with their hands. While Ron hummed as he took a big bite, they chewed theirs thoughtfully.
"I should check on the washing," said Molly quietly, without looking at anyone. She grabbed a laundry basket and headed outside towards the clothesline.
"I'll help!" said Hermione cheerfully. She was always happy to help with the chores at the Burrow, but she also wanted to get one of the Weasleys alone to figure out what they had been talking about.
Molly didn't answer and continued outside with Hermione behind her.
"How have you and Arthur been?" asked Hermione pleasantly.
"Well, my days are still dreary, with no children left in the house," Molly sighed. "I knew that children don't stay children forever, but I certainly wasn't expecting my younger ones to hit so many milestones so quickly….and in the wrong order." She finished more quietly
Hermione frowned. Did Molly think she and Ron were getting married too soon? She had never expressed that before, she was overjoyed when they had announced their engagement.
"Er….well, Ron recently got promoted from Junior Auror," said Hermione uncertainly as she began helping Molly take garments off the clothesline and put them in the basket. "He'll be taking more serious cases now." So his career is well on track, if that's what you're worried about.
"I'm touched that you and Ron are willing to indulge that to me!" said Molly sharply
Hermione pursed her lips. Her patience was running out.
She stepped towards her soon-to-be mother-in-law and gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "Molly…"
For the first time, Molly turned to look at Hermione and the younger woman flinched back at the cold distrust and disapproval she saw in her eyes. Hermione felt a rush of deja vu, and after a short moment she realized where she had seen that look before: it was the same look she had received from Molly her fourth year, when the older witch had believed Rita Skeeter and was under the impression that Hermione was Harry's manipulative girlfriend, breaking his heart by messing around with Viktor.
"Mrs. Weasley...have I done something wrong?" asked Hermione weakly.
Seeing the hurt on Hermione's face, Molly's own harsh expression softened and was replaced with a wave of guilt. Her eyes got watery and her lip trembled, and before Hermione could say anything else she suddenly found herself being hugged tightly.
"No dear, you haven't done anything wrong," said Molly in a choked voice, as Hermione awkwardly patted her back, thoroughly confused. "I'm just being silly. I understand you're not choosing sides, you're just being a good friend."
Molly pulled back, and was smiling weakly at Hermione.
"Er...thank you," said Hermione, more bewildered than ever. "I don't mean to be rude, Molly, but I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about."
"Oh no, of course not," Molly winked dramatically, "There's nothing to tell, I'll drop it. Come on, dinner is just about ready."
Before Hermione could insist more strongly that Molly explain what the hell was going on, Molly picked up the now-full laundry basket and returned to the house, leaving Hermione blinking dumbly behind her.
******************************
As Hermione followed his mother outside, Ron continued to chew into the warm, buttery scone, barely looking at his surrounding family members, the earlier tension all but forgotten to him.
"So….little Ronnie doesn't come around for dinner as much as he used to," Bill pointed out.
"He and Harry have been burning the candle at both ends at the Ministry," said Percy.
"Hmm-hmm," Ron nodded, engrossed in his scone, not looking up to see the stern looks on his brothers' faces. "More than we need to be, honestly. But because of Harry's saving-people-thing, he's always sure that the next case will end in disaster if the dark wizard isn't caught right now, and of course he would be lost without me, so whenever he's working overtime I am too." He shrugged.
"Oh yes, I think we're all well aware how loyal you are to Harry," Charlie said darkly, "Even over other, older loyalties, as a matter of fact."
"Charlie…." began their dad warningly.
Ron looked back up, and grew uncomfortable again when he saw that all of his family members were looking directly at him. Earlier, he had assumed that the awkward tension in the room was because he and Hermione had interrupted an important conversation, but it seemed to go beyond that, like they were pissed directly at him for something he had done.
"What's going—"
He was interrupted by his mother re-entering the house, holding the laundry with one hand and wiping tears from her eyes with the other. Hermione followed in shortly behind her, and Ron looked pointedly at his mother and gave his fiance a quizzical look, but Hermione just returned a confused, helpless shrug.
"The roast should be almost done now," said Molly happily, and waved her want to send a flurry of plates and cutlery flying to settle in front of where each of the Weasley men were sitting.
"And I'm such a terrible mother, I neglected something," chuckled Molly, and bent down to kiss the crown of Ron's head. "We all missed you, dear."
"Mum…" Ron grumbled awkwardly, but he saw his brothers look at each other with slightly guilty expressions, and as they followed their mother's lead, the atmosphere of the room became friendlier.
Charlie drew in a deep breath and sighed. "I need a drink."
"Excellent idea!" pipped George. He waved his wand and summoned a large bottle of firewhiskey from the cabinet along with several glasses, which zoomed right past Molly's face, causing her to jump and shriek.
"For the last time, only the cook can summon in the kitchen!" Molly scolded him, "I won't have this room devolve in complete chaos of flying objects until someone gets a concussion!"
"And I know you don't always act like it, but you are all of age," said Arthur, raising his eyebrows at George pouring several glasses of whiskey, "so I see no reason why you can't bring your own drinking supplies instead of raiding mine."
Molly huffed. "Well maybe it will be best if we stopped keeping that poison in the house—"
She stopped abruptly as they heard a faint pop from outside, coming from down the pathway, and Ron knew that Harry and Ginny must have arrived. Instead of beaming and rushing out into the garden to greet her two favorite children, however, Ron saw his mother gasp and a bit of the color drain from her face. His family members all looked at each other with that same expression he first saw when he came into the room.
Charlie gave a low growl and picked up a glass. "Yup. Definitely need a drink."

Secret Girlfriend ~ Lee Jihoon
His eyes lit up as he saw you at the event for the company, placing his glass to his lips to stop his smile from being too obvious, unable to take his eyes away from you as you began to work the room.
“She looks nice,” Chan smiled from beside him, nudging Jihoon’s side. “You’re lucky to have a friend as good looking as her sometimes hyung, it blows my mind why you’ve not asked her out yet.”
His head shook as he saw you heading over to Mingyu to say hello. He watched closely as your smile grew, accepting the light hug Mingyu offered you. “We’re good as friends,” Jihoon muttered, unable to turn his eyes away from you, “you guys don’t need to worry about us.”
“But look at her,” Chan pointed out to him yet again, “I know you say that your friends, but surely when you look at her you can picture what an incredible girlfriend she would be. How would you feel if another guy asked her out before you did?”
His shoulders shrugged, biting down on his bottom lip before he shared too much. His silence answered Chan’s question, although he wasn’t entirely sure whether it was one that would ask you out, or one that was more than happy to just settle as being your friend.
“All I’m saying is, consider what you really want from her,” Chan added, taking a sip from his drink. Jihoon finally looked across at him with a shake of his head. “Don’t look at me like that, I just don’t want you to miss out on something good for you.”
On the other side of the room, you listened closely as Mingyu became to tell you about an upcoming project he was working on. You’d already spotted Jihoon on the other side of the room, feeling his eyes watch everything you did. He was caught up with Chan, so you chose not to disturb him, smiling and nodding at Mingyu instead.
You thought you were about to step aside, when Seungkwan appeared alongside Mingyu too, resting on his shoulder as he greeted you, glancing across to Jihoon which was where you looked.
“The two of you are such good friends,” Seungkwan muttered, bringing your eyes back to look at the two of them. “I think he’s been feeling pretty single recently, don’t you think it’s about time that he started dating properly.”
“Jihoon can make his own mind up, I’m not going to be the one to tell him what to do there.”
The two of you were unaware of the glance Chan and Seungkwan exchanged, both of them nodding their heads, knowing exactly what they needed to do next.
Your trio fell silent for a few moments, but yet again as you were about to step aside and go and talk to a few of your friends, Mingyu stood in front of you to stop you from moving.
“I meant to ask you earlier,” he began, scratching the top of your head, “my friend is looking for a blind date for a double date, and I was wondering if you’d be up for giving it a try Y/N?”
Your eyes looked at him questionably before looking across to Jihoon who looked to be in deep conversation with Chan too. It was no secret to either of you that the maknaes were desperate to push you together, as everything slowly fell into place.
Your head nodded in response to Mingyu, “I’ve been thinking about getting myself back out there for a while now. Tell your friend that I say yes, just let me know the time and the place.”
“Wait…you really want to go on a date?” He questioned.
Your response took him by surprise which only confirmed your suspicions. Seungkwan nudged Mingyu’s hip to pull himself back together, forcing a smile to his lips.
After finally being able to walk away from the boys, you caught Jihoon’s attention, nodding towards the exit door so the two of you could finally get a few moments together.
You weaved through a few people before appearing by his side, “you’re never going to believe what happened,” you laughed, as he too shared that he had interesting news.
His eyes looked around to make sure none of the other members had followed you out, “I can’t believe the lengths they’re going to, they’re desperate for us to get together.”
You thought you’d managed to sneak out, but Seungkwan and Mingyu had caught you both red handed. They both crept towards the door, pushing it open loud enough so that they could hear what you were saying, without being seen.
Your head could only shake as Jihoon informed you of a blind date Chan was hoping to send you on. “Apparently he has a friend, who needs a blind date for a double date, his face when I told him that I would go was a picture.”
“Mingyu also has a friend looking for a blind date, I wonder who that friend could be,” you chuckled, feeling his arms press to your hips. “How stupid do you think they are?”
“Honestly, I don’t think they’ve got the slightest clue about what’s going on,” Jihoon laughed, “I wonder how long we could drag this out for before they realise what is really going on.”
From behind the door, both of the boys jumped as they overheard every word. Neither of them could believe what they were listening to, or how stupid they’d been to not realise sooner exactly what was going on.
“What do you think about going on the date and seeing who they’re trying to set us up with? I reckon we’ll find the two of them sat at the table,” he suggested.
Your smile grew, taking a step forwards to press a kiss to his lips. As you did, the loud bang of the door made you both jump. You turned around to see Mingyu’s shoe sticking through the gap, glancing across at Jihoon to make sure he saw too.
“Very subtle!” He yelled out, as both of them peered out shamefully from around the door, both of them carrying red glows on your cheeks.
“How long have the two of you been together?” Seungkwan yelled, struggling to believe what he saw in front of him. “Why did neither of you ever tell us you were dating?”
“It was too good of an opportunity to pass seeing how keen all of you were for us to get together,” you informed them, “where’s the fun in just telling you we’re dating.”
“I can’t believe you lied to us.”
Your head shook, taking another step closer towards Jihoon. “We didn’t lie, but we didn’t exactly tell you the truth either.”
Mingyu walked over to you, jabbing his hand into your hip several times to let you know just how disappointed he was in you especially for winding him up so much.
“Is that double date still available?” You teased.
The two boys glanced across at each other, both shrugging. “It is,” Seungkwan told you, “but Jihoon was right, we were going to be the ones waiting for you. So as an apology, I reckon the two of you should pay for the meal.”
“How’s that fair?” You questioned.
“Now you know how we feel being played by the two of you.”

Don't know if you're still doing the July Prompts, but in case you feel like it... Treasure Hunt, please? 😁🤗
Hello, my dear!
I love this prompt and I had more than one idea for it honestly but settled on a Mermaid AU. It needs a continuation at some point before I think I'll post it on ao3 but I hope you'll enjoy the start anyway!
(and this will be the last of the July prompts I'll be able to do)
**
A foggy morning upon the southern sea and a lone cutter with sixteen souls aboard ghosts across the surface where a tired, young sailor rubs his eyes.
The captain rises from his bunk and joins him on the bridge. “Where’s Thorne?”
Jon jerks his thumb over his shoulder to indicate the head. “Hobb’s chili’s not agreeing with him, captain.”
Mormont winces in sympathy for his second in command but Jon secretly hopes Thorne stays there another half hour. He hates my ass and the feeling is mutual at this point.
“Very well. Anything on radar, Snow?”
“No, sir. Clear and quiet.”
“Not been any sirens tempting you to jump ship then?”
Jon’s surprised that the old man is pulling his leg this early as Mormont is far from a morning person. There are legends surrounding these waters but it’s all a load of horseshit. Of course, the sunken treasure they’re seeking off this coast may well be one too but men are known to risk much for even a bit of gold.
“No, sir. No sirens, giant krakens or merfolk so far. I’ll let you know if any pay us a call though.”
Jon anticipates a wry grin in answer to his sarcasm but Mormont looks to be in deadly earnest when he says, “Don’t mock things you don’t understand, boy.”
He softens the scolding tone with a pat on the shoulder though and makes to leave again when Jon cannot help asking, “Do you think we’ll find my uncle out here?”
He’s told ‘maybe’ but the old man’s sorrowful look says ‘no.’
Benjen had commanded the first expedition out here last year looking for the Wolf’s Eye, the fabled shipwreck from years past with a ruby the size of a man's fist reportedly part of its treasure. The ship never returned and neither has any of the crew.
Alone again, Jon looks back over the water and his eyes begin to grow heavy once more. It’s been a long night on duty.
A sudden, steady beeping from the radar has him sitting up straight. What is that? It’s huge, twice as big as the ship. It’s not possible that a vessel that size could’ve snuck up on them so quickly and quietly, is it? Must be a whale or an uncharted reef.
He cuts the engines, sounds the alert and lets the ship begin to drift to a stop. The captain will probably be back up in a minute.
Stepping out from the bridge, he goes to the rail for a look and sees her. There’s a girl in the water! Where did she come from?!
“Man overboard!” he shouts with all his might as he reaches for a life preserver.
He takes aim and tosses it skillfully towards her. It lands less than three feet from her but she makes no move to grab it. She continues treading water and looking up at him with curiosity.
“Grab the float, miss! I’ll haul you in!” he cries.
A confused smile, a shrug. She gingerly taps the life preserver, a look of frank suspicion. Then, she seems to understand and waves at him.
And even in the early morning light and fog, Jon can tell her eyes are a lovely cerulean blue and her hair is a blaze of red. It’s not the shade of the ruby which they seek but more of an auburn, like a cozy fire in one’s hearth on a cold night, a more tangible sort of treasure to Jon's way of thinking.
She’s smiling up at him and…gods, she’s beautiful.
The ship is coming to life. Men race along the deck trying to figure out what’s going on. He can hear Thorne bellowing at him from the bridge but he keeps staring at the girl in the water who seems concerned by all the hullabaloo she and the radar has caused. She still makes no move towards the ship.
“If you won’t save yourself, I guess I’ll be saving you,” Jon grumbles with conviction as he begins to tug off his boots.
The girl in the water laughs at that. She seems to want him to jump into the water with her.
What sort of game is this? What had Mormont teased him of just a short time ago? Should he be more cautious than this? That's what he's most often being rebuked for aboard, flying headlong into an uncertain situation without giving it enough thought.
But his hands are already on the railing, preparing to climb over…when an almighty jarring crash knocks him to his knees. Have they struck the reef?! Is there an invisible ship out there they’ve run square into?
No, there’s a tentacle coming up over the side. An enormous tentacle, as big around as a pig! There’s more than one! It’s wrapping around the ship and pulling. The bloody thing seems to be intent on taking the ship under!
His eyes find the girl’s again and those big blue eyes are frightened. She gestures wildly for him to jump, to come to her. (And her gesturing brings Jon’s attention to the fact that she’s not wearing any sort of clothing or swimsuit on her top half at least. Seven hells.)
Regardless of her state of dress, there’s bigger problems at hand. Panicked and not knowing what else to do, Jon jumps towards the girl in the water, barely clearing one of those huge tentacles.
Perhaps it’s the impact of hitting the water or perhaps something hit his head as he jumped but Jon feels pain and the blackness is closing in and he immediately gulps in a mouthful of seawater.
Sputtering and disoriented, he’s briefly aware of the girl wrapping one thin, cool arm around his torso and pulling him rapidly away from the cutter. They move so quick, like dolphins through the water. She's stronger and faster than he would've ever guessed.
There’s shouts and cries from the men aboard the ship and subconsciously Jon knows something very bad is happening but in his drifting, foggy state, he can’t seem to comprehend it all.
"Who are you?" he asks the girl...or maybe he just thinks it.
She looks so worried over him and he wants to tell her not to worry. He may find his uncle here.
She shakes her head and gently kisses his aching brow and gives him what he thinks is an attempt at a reassuring smile.
One of his hands is tangled in her wet hair and Jon would swear there’s a silvery fin beating against his dangling, useless legs before consciousness leaves him completely.

I will say, I wasn’t quite sure what to be expecting when I came down to the mortal world today. It definitely was not to find out all of my exes regroup annually to mock me.
Since becoming a god again, I’ve made it a personal promise to come down every once in a while. I’ve grown quite attached to these mortals, especially to my demigod children. After all, my own descendants are the best of all living beings; it’s only fair that I come and talk to them every once in a while. And, believe it or not, being around mortals helps me, too. It makes me find comfort in a world where lives may be short but lives are lived; as a god, I only ever exist.
When I was human, though, I truly lived. It was exhilarating. Now that I am a deity again, there’s a hollowness that resides in me.
Sometimes coming down to this mortal world helps me simulate that experience of being human again. It helps me feel less lonely up in my world of immortality and timelessness.
The sun blazes overhead as I traipse along to my cabin after just meeting with Dionysus. The insufferable bastard beat me once again at pinochle and would not stop gloating, so I decided to storm away from the wine god before he could start beating my ass in Uno.
However, as I approach my cabin, my rage ebbs away. My demigod children stand around the entrance, talking in hushed voices, and my heart bursts with warmth. It has only been a few weeks since I’ve last seen them, but each time I do, I feel only a flush of pride looking at them.
“My children!” I exclaim. “I’m here once again!”
They all jump as if I’ve scared them. For a moment, no one says anything. Then they break apart and each of them offer me a shaky smile of their own.
“Hey, Dad,” Will says, his voice a bit higher than I remember.
I step forward, happiness flooding over me. It hasn’t been too long since I’ve seen them but it certainly feels like it’s been millennia. “How are you all?”
Kayla pushes a pack over her shoulder. “We’re... good. How are you?”
Her words carry a bit of hesitation as if she’s nervous. Suspicion crawls over me. I cross my arms and respond, “I’m good too. Why do you have that bag over your shoulder?”
Austin, Will, and Kayla all turn to each other, sharing a look of panic. A shiver runs through me as I realize they’re up to something. I smile. “Ohhh, are you planning something? A prank, perhaps?” I rub my hands in anticipation. “Can I get in on it?”
Austin raises a hand and scratches his head. “Um, not quite. We’re actually... going somewhere.”
Panic seizes my heart and I rush forward. “Going somewhere? Where? Like, a quest?” I reach out to my children and hug them, feeling each of their bodies in my arms. “Why did no one tell me? Oh, gods, what if I never see you again?” Tears well up in my throat. I’ve only just come down to the mortal world, and they’re already leaving for doom?
“No, no, no!” Kayla exclaims, pushing against my arms. “Not like that, Dad! Not a quest. We’re just going out to the city. No need to worry.”
Relief washes over me and I laugh, taking my arms away from them. “Oh, that’s great! Are you going somewhere fun? Can I come?”
Before any of them can answer, a familiar demigod steps out of the Apollo cabin. They step towards Will and hand him a pack of ambrosia. It takes me for a moment to remember that it’s Nico di Angelo. He opens his mouth to speak to Will, then stops when they notice me. “Oh no,” they mutter.
“What do you mean, oh no?” I ask, the claws of suspicion creeping over my skin once more. “What are you three up to? Is Nico coming with you?”
Nico whispers to the three, “You haven’t told him?”
“Not a good time,” Kayla hisses.
“Well, I guess now is a better time than never,” Nico says. They turn to me and state blatantly, “They’re going to meet their parents in New York City.”
Kayla and Austin smack their faces and Will sighs. “You could have let us say it,” the blond mutters.
“Better to know from a child that isn’t his,” the child of Hades reasons, shrugging.
I blank. I was not quite expecting that response, and definitely not so casually. I stare at the four demigods quizzically. “Oh? I suppose that’s fair. But all three of you? All your parents know each other?”
“Um, well... they’re kind of friends,” Austin admits. “They... communicate often.”
A wave of humility washes over me. I will admit, it’s a little bit embarrassing knowing that the three people you’ve had children with all know each other and actively communicate. I would have suspected they’d feel a bit awkward with each other, but I didn’t quite expect they would be actual friends.
I tip my head in a sad nod. “I see. Well, I hope all three of you have fun today!” I’m trying not to sound too upset, but it’s a little bit hard when you’ve come down to the mortal world just to find out your children are going to be going into the city far away from you.
“Hey, Dad, we can hang out later!” Will suggests, a kind smile balancing over his lips. But he’s only saying that out of pity. He feels bad for me. This makes me crawl in further into myself.
“Yes, that sound alright,” I promise, feigning a smile. "But, really, don’t feel bad.” My shoulders rise and fall in a shrug. “The last time I met your parents their careers were becoming quite busy. I suppose you don’t see them as often as you’d like, is that correct? And at this point, you’ve been seeing me even more often than your own mortal parents. It’s only fair that you have some private time with them.”
A tense silence tightens the air around us. Austin shifts on his feet. After a moment, Kayla says, “Well, we better go. We’ll see you later, though!”
A cold fist seizes my heart.
Will winces. He reaches over and squeezes my shoulder. “We’re sorry to leave you like this, but we didn’t expect you to come by today. We can definitely do something later, though. The three of us will be back by six. Nico’s going to do ghost stories tonight, too, so maybe you’ll want to hear those.”
I wave my hand dismissively and try on a smile that doesn’t quite fit right. “No, really, don’t feel too bad. I’ll come by later and we can do a movie night together after Nico’s ghost stories. I’ll see you later! And have fun!”
They all glance at each other hesitantly, then seem to come to a collective agreement. “Thanks, Dad,” Austin says, pulling me in for a hug. The other two do the same, then all three demigods wander out into the sun, aiming for the exit out of camp.
Nico stares at me, eyebrows raised. “So, what are you going to do now?” Picking at their jeans, they add, “You’re Apollo, so I’m expecting that you will be doing something stupid.”
I frown. “Those are brave words for a demigod to say to a powerful deity.”
“You’re too mushy at this point to pulverize me. They’ve made you soft.” He means it as an insult but their eyes glimmer. A smile laces his mouth.
I offer them a smile back. “Well, I suppose you are correct. I shall see you for your god-tier ghost stories.”
Nico shakes his head and turns to leave. “Please never reference modern things ever again.”
~
A little bit later, I’m balancing on a chair at a pizza shop in New York City. I’ve chosen the disguise of a businessman, mostly copying the image of a fairly attractive man I met on the way. Perhaps I will go and look for him after I’m done stalking my children.
The scent of pizzas swirl around me, contaminating my nose. The excited chatter of families and friends surround me. Some afternoon sun pours in through the open windows, offering the entire pizza place a relaxed look.
Somewhere to my left, a large group eats and talks, laughter echoing from their table. All my children are sitting to one side of the booth, while the adults loom over them on the other. Will’s bright blond hair gleams blindingly as the sun washes over his locks.
I wasn’t quite sure of what I was expecting from all three of my exes. Perhaps more gray hair, some wrinkles over their faces. No doubt all three of them have those, but they each look at peace, happy with life. There’s a brightness in their eyes as they gaze at their children.
I understand that look. I feel the same pride when I see all three of them.
Envy roils inside me. I’m not sure why, considering that I see the three demigods more often than they see their own mortal parents. Perhaps I’m just nervous that they adore their mortal parents more than they care for me.
But I wouldn’t blame them if they did either. I’ve spent too long only caring about myself. A coil of embarrassment wraps around me.
But I’m changing that now, aren’t I? I wasn’t the best parent, but I can only hope my children are seeing that I’m here for them. I only want what’s best for them.
Another burst of laughter erupts from the booth, and I turn my head, straining my ears to listen. Naomi’s silky voice echoes over them: “...and just as he got up he tripped over himself and fell on the ground. Honestly, I have no idea how he could have been a god, but he sure was dumb.” Naomi sighs. “Maybe that’s why I thought he was so adorable. People just constantly try to impress me. He did, too, but at least he was failing. He may have been a god, but he seemed almost human the night I met him.”
With a shiver, I realize that she’s discussing the moment she met me. Red hot embarrassment spreads over my face. Gods of Olympus, that was a terrible evening for me. I was just so awestruck by her performance. She literally made me come down just to see her perform. I could barely contain my excitement when the show was over!
Will’s sunny voice stands out, amusement lacing his voice. “Speaking of dating, tell us about your new girlfriend. I don’t remember you telling me about her too much at our last Iris message.”
My eyes widen. Girlfriend? I wasn’t aware Naomi was queer! A pang of guilt stabs me in the heart. What else don’t I know about my loved ones? I know I haven’t quite kept up with her, but shouldn’t I at least know this about her?
Shouldn’t I know anything about the three of my exes?
The chatter continues for a bit longer. The adults discuss some more dating history, especially surrounding their humiliating encounters with me. I cower behind my newspaper, feeling only the heat of embarrassment under my skin. Why must I be such an idiot?
Perhaps this is why my children don’t seem to like to me too much. Because I only ever do things to embarrass them. Maybe I’m just a loser of a father.
As I wallow in my own pity, the conversation turns another direction. My ears strain a little more. This time Latricia is speaking, a whisper of nostalgia brushing through her words: “He sure was something. But I think that we can all agree on something: I’m glad he came into my life. Without him...” Her lips quirk into a smile and she brushes her fingers over Austin’s. “Well, without him, I don’t think we’d have each of you. He really brought light into our lives.” She sighs. “He may not have stuck along too much, but you three make it sound like he’s getting better. I’m just glad that... that you’re getting to talk with him again. It seems like he really is starting to care about his children.” Latricia’s eyes rove over all three children, eyes glimmering with satisfaction. “I’m glad he’s seeing you three in the same light as we do.”
My ears turn hot and a red blush coats my cheeks. She’s right; I do appreciate them. Without my children, I don’t know how I could have managed to get through everything I did. Even now, after all that’s happened, it feels as though I have nothing better to look forward to than knowing how amazing they are. Tears stab my eyes.
And I almost jump out of my seat when someone calls, “You can stop hiding behind that newspaper, Apollo. We know it’s you.”
The voice surprises me so much I pop right back into my typical godly form, chiton and all. I’m already so embarrassed that I barely even realize that I’m half naked in public now. Grimacing, I stand and offer an awkward wave. “Ah, hello.”
Darren Knowles smiles at me, a knowing sparkle in his eyes. “You thought you were being stealthy, didn’t you?”
It’s been a while since I’ve really seen Darren, and the years have certainly aged him. Yet there’s still a flutter in my chest as I look at him. He doesn’t look so bad; he’s probably in his thirties or forties. I smile. “Well, I thought my godly powers would help disguise me.”
“Not as well as you thought,” Latricia remarks, smirking at me.
“How long have you known I was here?”
This time, Kayla speaks up. “Dad, we literally knew you were here the moment you got here.”
I blink. “And you didn’t call me out?”
Will shakes his head. “We wanted to see what you’d do. Gotta say, I’m surprised you didn’t do anything too spontaneous. Good job.”
He’s teasing me, but even then I feel a brush of humility come over me. “Well, I have to say that I didn’t quite know you three only come together to make fun of me.”
Naomi waves her hand in a dismissive manner. “Only to make sure our children know how lucky we are to have them.” Her eyes rove over me, almost as if judging how much I’ve changed. “I haven’t seen you in a while," she notes.
The three adults share a look, carrying a silent conversation with each other. Will, Austin, and Kayla watch me as if they expected me to do exactly this. Austin laughs. “You really don’t take no for an answer, do you?”
I shrug. “I just... I don’t know. I know I already see you three often enough, but I suppose I just wanted to see how things were going. Especially with your parents.” I glance at them, my cheeks blooming red. “I haven’t exactly been the best parent in the past. I just want to apologize. And let you know that your children... Well, they’re some of the most extraordinary people I’ve ever met. You’ve raised them better than I could ever have.”
Silence lingers in the air, waiting for someone to make the next move. Then Darren gestures to the food before them. “Why don’t you sit? I suppose we’ve got a lot of catching up to do.”

Continuation of Dear diary, and Souvenirs, secrets and coffee dates
This night went better than expected. We didn’t go to bed at 2 -for once-, but around 11:30 PM, so even if it’s still late, it’s better than nothing.
Considering all of the stuff we have to do today, and probably in the next few days, we couldn’t allow ourselves to go to bed at the hour people usually get up for work, such as 6AM...or more.
And it would also be a lie to say that we didn’t go to bed at this hour once.
Nonetheless, we both were excited about the activities of the day, and if I’m not wrong, we’re at our fourth coffee mission-date.
Yeah, none of us figured out a proper and official title for it, so we’ve just been altering between dates and mission.
At the same time, it’s a date, it’s been a while since we haven’t got to have a moment to ourselves, and it’s also -as said- a mission. We like to set small challenges, especially when we happen to have time like this week.
Talking about this week, I have to admit that not receiving a call has stayed quite surprising, even now. Before we had the idea of doing our coffee dates, I had just come back from almost two weeks of work.
I had been away for a week, had just three days of ‘vacation time’, and had been called back for another week. So, I think that it's not weird at all to be surprised, all of us probably are.
I just hope they won’t decide to have a party or something, because I can never find myself to refuse and find a proper excuse that doesn’t raise suspicions, now that I have a girlfriend.
I can’t believe that I almost used Ethan as an excuse to not attend once, and the idiot I am forgot he happened to be in New Orleans at this time.
Basically all planes were cancelled because of the weather, and if I had happened to let his name slip, as they probably know that I know him, they would have wanted to know more...especially Penelope.
And the idiot I still am would have tried to find another excuse, that -of course- would have miserably failed as well.
I just hope we’ll get to have a few more days before I eventually get called back, it’d be nice.
It’d also be nice if I would stop to think about a possible call, because if y/n would hear me she’d complain about me bringing bad luck.
Normally as it is only some superstitions, it doesn’t happen, but again -as expected-, last time when I had said that a possible call was coming, I received one just two days later.
So, I think that I’m gonna pass on this subject.
I also wish I didn’t have to be the one responsible for waking her up; she’s...quite difficult when it comes to that, and most of the time, we’ll either end up being 30 minutes late, or just not go where we had to at all.
But since what we were supposed to do was important, she really had to get up, even if I had to drag her out of the bed.
“Y/N, come on, I’ve been trying to get you out of the bed since nine, and even gave you twenty minutes more.”
“Jus’ a bit more…”
“Alright, I’ll go to the library all day then.”
“No, you’re stayin’ with me.” She said, as she sat up and grabbed my sleeve.
“You want me to help you get ready?”
“Mhm.”
“Okay, give me your hand.” I extended mine, as she lazily took it. “There you go sleepy head.”
“I’m not a sleepy head. It’s my morning head, that’s all.”
“Your morning head is a sleepy one.”
“No, it’s a well-rested one.”
“Okay, you won the fight.”
“I always win arguments.” She proudly announced, while she got up, stretching up a bit. “So...are we going to the one we saw on internet yesterday, it really had good reviews, and a nice website, which is...a good sign usually.”
“Yeah, it is. It really sounded nice, plus I think I’ve heard about it from other people, and they’ve had pretty good experiences. I say we go for it, might as well enjoy it before...work calls again.”
“You’re going to bring us bad luck, stop with that.”
“It counts for you as well. You mentioned it yesterday.”
“...I didn’t.”
“You did.”
“No, I’m sure your brain is tricking you.”
“Once again, I am sure it’s not. I know my brain well, and it never lies.”
“Pff, you know your brain? I’ve never heard such a ridiculous thing.”
“Says the-girl-who-forgets-her-stuff.”
“Hey! Don’t use that nickname, the diary story was an accident.”
“You didn’t trust yourself enough that you had to give me your number.”
“No, it wasn’t for that, I just wanted to chat.”
“Even years later, you still lie.”
“No, I don’t.”
“Mhm.”
“Okay, one more remark, and instead of going out, I’m making you clean my whole apartment for a week.”
“...I’m going to get ready.”
“That’s what I thought genius.”
“Why am I being called ‘genius’ when I’m not supposed to call you ‘the-girl-who-forgets-her-stuff?’, hm?” I joked.
“Everyone calls you genius at work, see it as a third name.”
“Then if what I call you is your name, it’s kind of long. Y/N, Y/M/N, the-girl-who-forgets-her-stuff, Y/L/N.”
“Okay, if I stop using genius, will you stop with that?”
“...maybe.” I answered, as she hit me with her shirt. “Okay, okay! I’ll stop!”
“You’re really nice when you want, see?”
“I’m not a puppy either.”
“You have puppy eyes, same stuff.” She briefly said.
“Who says?”
“Me.”
“Only you is not enough to be convincing.”
“Who says?” She repeats.
“Do you want me to get the excuse I took at the library?”
“Which?” Y/N asked, visibly confused.
“That you had to be more polite, else, I won’t listen.”
“I’m going to warm up the car.” She grabs the keys, changing the subject.
“I love to mess with you.”
“Shut up.” She says before leaving, earning a sneaky laugh from me.
++
When I had gotten out of the building after a few minutes, I swore that Y/N could have left without me if I would have tried to mess with her again.
She didn’t though, but she warned me (jokingly, she had said…), that she wouldn’t have hesitated a bit.
In most cases, she really isn’t kidding, and wasn’t at all this time.
The only thing I got when I had gotten in the car was a hit on the arm, that...kinda still hurt for a bit even after a few minutes.
But, we both know it wasn’t serious. We often do that, and we usually make jokes like ‘I’m going to murder you and pretend someone killed you in the night’, ‘I’m gonna have Hotch yell at you by making you late’, or even, her favorite one, ‘I’m gonna steal your phone and announce our relationship.’.
Which….when it was told after a few months we began dating, would stop the teasing from me, and end in a fit of laughter, as we would discuss it; and jump to other subjects.
That joke is less...uncomfortable, or the kind to stop the conversation, as we really talked about it, and kind of planned to say it before we’d end up married with two kids.
I know that they’ll be happy whether I announce it while she’s my girlfriend, or my wife, and mother of my kids, but still, it’s been a while, and I think that they deserve to know, they’re like family to me.
Even my mother, who had just met them a few times, appreciates them a lot.
But once they’ll know, Y/N will have to prepare herself; because she’s gonna receive a lot of questions from Garcia, who’s probably going to get her to come as often as possible; some messages from the team, a lot of invitations, because to be honest, they’ll all be really surprised that I got a girlfriend, and as it’s been a while, they’ll have a lot to ask and tell.
I just hope that they won’t...mention what happened in my early days.
Some stories are kind of embarrassing, and not really nice to recall to me.
Knowing Morgan’s, he’s either going to mention what happened with Lila Archer, or the gun qualification that I failed (but, that I got, after I shot between a guy’s eyes in one shot, so this story will only be half bad).
...he could also tell both.
But, I know for sure that they’ll welcome her with open arms. They’ll really appreciate her.
She’s done a lot for me, and I can really say that she...somehow made my life better, in a way (She says that I’m cheesy, when I say that).
I honestly have no idea what would have happened if she took her diary back before I even got to see it, I would have never paid attention to the shop on my way as usual, I would only go to the library for the usual reason, my life wouldn’t have changed even a bit.
I like to say that fate has reunited us, but in another way, I like that she happened to be so distracted to the point of forgetting it.
I can’t really imagine having to not see her anymore; we’ve been so used to each other that we constantly have to see each other, and at least hear the other’s voice if I’m at work.
Literally, all of the free time that we have, it’s spent with the other.
We also happen to hang out with our friends, but most of the time; we’re always together.
I noticed that we don’t tend to go outside often, we both prefer to stay outside, and once, we even cancelled plans at the restaurant at the last minute as we were both too lazy to even get ready.
That also happened in the morning; none of us had work, and we decided to spend most of the day in bed, and we didn't do even anything till a few hours, we just talked and cuddled.
So, these coffee dates are kind of a miracle; because knowing our shared laziness, we wouldn’t have done that at all.
It’s our fourth one today, and it's going pretty well.
I’ve thrown facts the whole time, and she didn’t mind.
She actually asked for others, at each of them.
Y/N was totally into it.
And that kind of made me laugh, I even said that she looked like a nerd, or even a teacher’s pet.
That’s why we enjoyed it, we laughed a lot during those, and actually planned to go outside more, which is...totally crazy.
I don’t know what is happening to us, but, some miracle fought off our laziness, and now, we’re going outside a lot.
Our coffee dates also made y/n drive more.
She would never touch the wheel, unless if it was at 1am for emergency snacks, and now, she insists every time.
I think I’ve only driven at the first, but not fully, as she took over on the way back.
We’ve also discovered a lot of coffee shops, I’ve walked in front of some, but never actually went inside.
I guess our coffee dates are mainly us, testing out what they have, and when we’ll run out of shops; we’ll basically try to choose the best.
She even purchased a notebook for us to put our ratings in.
I really never saw her taking something so seriously.
She also created another folder on her phones, with a lot of pics. The majority of them have my face, and she took most of them when I was looking away.
Y/N mentioned that she really likes my side profile, which at the moment was...kind of weird, but, I got used to it, and even looked on the side on purpose as I knew she’d taken a picture without fail.
I think that she has one where I’m turning around; she didn’t get to take my side profile before I turned, it was kind of blurry, but I insisted on keeping it.
We might print the pictures and make a scrapbook at this point; it would be fun.
I know she’ll like the idea.
“Okay, so...are we ordering one of the basics, or are we going a bit fancy today?” Y/N asked.
“Go for the fancy option, that’ll change.”
“Alright, you go get settled, and I’ll be right back.” She said, kissing my nose at “right”. I always like that.
She knows every single thing that makes me happy. It’s kind of crazy, she almost knows me better than I do.
I’m also pretty sure she knows that I hate when she goes away, even if she’s two meters away, and is going to come back in just a bit.
I just really like to be with her, and this might be childish or something, but I almost got her late once because I didn’t want her to go yet once.
At least I won’t have to do that this week. None of us have work, and I just have to hope I won’t be called in.
I’m the only one that could completely cancel our plans, and even though I know she won’t be angry as we managed to get five days without a call disturbing us, it’ll still somehow leave a bitter feeling.
She told me to stop worrying, and just, enjoy the moment, but I just can’t help but think about it, and even though she’s not a profiler, she can tell when I’m worrying about something.
So, might as well quit worrying, and just enjoy our dates, because always thinking about the calls might end up bringing us bad luck as she constantly says.
Y/N even has a sticky note on her desk counting how many times I’ve either worried about it, and brought up the subject.
So far...I’ve said it about seven times, and it’ll probably turn to eight if she notices.
“You know, you can say it if there’s something wrong.”
There goes the possible eighth time.
“Oh, sorry, what did you say?”
“I see it that something is bothering you. Did you prefer us to stay home today?”
“No, no, not at all! I really wanted to go out with you. It’s not the problem.”
“So, what’s the actual problem?”
“You know it.”
“Oh, quit that cellphone. Just smash it on the ground and wait for them to come.”
“You know that’s not how it works.”
“That’s the only wait for you to stop worrying. That’s the eighth time.”
“It’s not even the eighth at this point, it’s the fortieth.”
“Or the hundredth.”
“Yeah, I got it. I worry a lot.”
“I’m not even a profiler and I can just tell like that. Quit your job and let me take your spot, I’m gonna impress them all.”
“Are you going to enjoy the ‘waking up at 4am’, ‘being away for a week’, ‘risking getting killed’ parts though?”
“...not the ‘4am’ one, no.”
“Try applying as a secretary, maybe. It’s calm.”
“If I have enough of my job at the craft job, okay. I’ll make sure to be in the same section. I’m gonna be the best secretary they’ll ever see.”
“You’re going to make us late though. When I’ll have to leave you’re gonna try to get a few more seconds to talk with me.”
“I may.”
“Hotch’s not going to like this.”
“Eh, he won’t say anything. We’re two young people in love, so, if he doesn’t have a rock heart as...you always tell me how strict he’s...he’ll be okay with it.”
“Not if it happens a lot. I tell you. Hotch isn’t kidding when it comes to that. He may accept some occasional late reports, but not a late arrival when we have to immediately go on the field.”
“Okay, then I won’t do it.”
“...one or two times won’t hurt. If we do one a week, and the other two weeks and...a half later, maybe it’ll pass. Who knows?” I suggested.
“I don’t want you to get fired. This job is important.”
“...yeah, kind of.”
“Plus, we have to tell them, at least before you get fired.” She joked.
“If I get fired, I won’t have to tell them as I won’t see them as often as I want. I’ll have another job and we’ll all be busy.”
“It’s kind of smart but...don’t you dare do that. That’s not genius.”
“You suggested something, and I went along with it. You started it, not me.”
“A suggestion isn’t an obligation, or a serious thing. I never forced you to do it. It was only “if”, never said anything serious.”
“You know that I always take you seriously.”
“Too seriously that you couldn’t catch jokes.”
“I understood it, I just played along with you.”
“If I hadn’t interrupted you, it looked like you would have almost done it.”
“I wasn’t going to.”
“Mhm.”
“Did you really think I’d do it?”
“Knowing you...there was a chance you would have done it. A slim one.”
“Really?”
“Yep.” She honestly answered, taking a sip of her coffee as she kept her glance on me.
“I wouldn’t do it, it was only a joke, nothing more. Even if it’s...full of pretty big risks, I still enjoy it.”
“It’s scary as hell, yeah. And even though I’m not with you, I still feel the stress.”
“I have to admit that I scared you...a lot.”
“You bet. The ‘out of battery’ days really scared me.”
“Yeah, sorry for that.”
“It’s okay, I’m not mad. You’re still there, and now we’re on...I still didn’t find a name for it.”
“What was the original name already?” I asked.
“Coffee mission slash dates. Not amazing.”
“We can’t really settle on only one at the same time.”
“We can’t. But at the same moment, we kind of have to choose one.”
“Coffee mission slash dates isn’t the best, but it’s the only thing we could think about, it’s better than not having one.”
“You’re kinda right. It’s okay if we keep that one.”
“I guess so.”
“By the way, as...I see we’re basically done. What are we saying for this one? Do you want to try something else before we write our review?” She asked.
“We can have another one. Only roughly 80 to 100 cups of coffee would turn into a lethal dose, so...it should be okay.”
“It’s kind of morbid, and creepy.”
“It’s still useful to know it.”
“I didn’t need to know that my source of energy can kill me. Now I think that I may have to slow down.”
“It can kill me too. I drink way too much when I’m at work then at home.”
“Imagine that the autopsy guy has to say to your family that you died because of a caffeine overdose. That’d be...either dumb, or embarassing. Gosh, it’s not funny.”
“Yeah, sorry. That fact was just stuck in my head.”
“Choose less morbid ones next time.”
“Don’t worry-”
“Yeah. So, uh, didn’t you say you wanted to try that one too? It sounds cool.”
“Why not, okay.”
“Okay, I’m going. You stay there.”
“But- You don’t have to.”
“I’m going, it’s okay.”
“Pff, ok. You can go.”
“I’ll be right back anyway. Don’t be sad.”
“I’m not sad.”
“Is that so? You should have seen your face.”
“I wasn’t sad.”
“If you say so.” She said, before leaving as she headed to the counter again.
We’re really little kids sometimes.
Maybe that’s why we get along.
We’re more childish than serious most of the time.
On that, we’re kind of equal I’d say, but...it depends.
I’m the childish one these days.
I still haven’t found a way to announce her to them, because...even if I really like them, I still don’t really want to.
It’s mostly for security reasons, with all that happened during my years, I’m kind of afraid.
I’ll have to tell them one day, eventually though.
They’re gonna bug me even more if I wait too much.
“Stop overthinking.” Y/N interrupted, as she set the two cups on the table.
“I can’t.”
“You have to, eventually. If this is about the cellphone, or not having enough dates, or even, that we have to tell them, you have to stop. We already had four, it’s a miracle.”
“To be honest, yeah. I wouldn’t hope we’ll have more.”
“What about we tell them if we get another one?”
“I’m gonna receive a call before.”
“No, we won’t. I’m the one between the two of us that bring us luck. So, we’ll have our fifth one.”
“Okay, we’ll see. Even if I’m not really sure. But, I hope we do though.”
“I can guarantee we’ll have it. Now drink your coffee before it gets cold.”
“Cold coffee isn’t bad.”
“Yes it is! That one isn’t meant to be drunk cold. If it had ice, then yeah.”
“Stop criticizing my choices, it’s not nice!”
“Your choices are so bad that I have to be on your back.”
“You’re not my mom.”
“...you sure about that? I’ve acted as your mom a lot of times because of some of your choices. I don’t even remember them all, there’s so many.”
“Not a lot. That’s why you don’t remember.”
“I don’t have your brain, but I remember some.”
“I’m not that immature, and...irresponsible.”
“Okay, you’re not that immature. I exaggerated.”
“It’s nice of you to admit your mistake.” I joked.
“I’m gonna take my words back, be careful. I might not even wake you up if you get a call. That way you’ll have Hotch yell at you.”
“You’ll make coffee for yourself, that’ll wake me up.”
“How?”
“The smell of coffee can help you wake up in the morning.”
“Hm. Guess we don’t need alarms then. You’ll build us a machine that automatically starts the machine and we’ll be up in no time.”
“At this rate, we could also install a webcam in front of it, if we do it every morning, at each nap, and all day.
“A webcam?”
“I saw somewhere that people working at the University of Cambridge knew the feeling of finding an empty coffee pot so well, that they invented the first ever webcam with the sole purpose of checking the status of the coffee pot.”
“That’s actually kinda smart.”
“I know, right? That way we don’t have to check, but the one that’ll have to fill it back up will receive tons of notifications, so it'll kind of be annoying.”
“...yeah. I don’t want it anymore.”
“You’ll probably be the one receiving the notifications more often since you’ll be home.”
“That’s why I changed my mind. I don’t want you to see how often I drink, because...trust me it’s a lot.”
“...I do the same at work.”
“That’s why we get along. We get each other, basically have the same habits. We’re the perfect couple.”
“You kind of sound drunk when you say that, I don’t know. It sounds like something you’d say while being drunk.”
“Kind of, yeah.” She agreed, laughing. “Throw another fact, we’ll continue in the car.”
“Let me think...oh, I got one. From statistics, the average American spends around $20 a week on coffee, which is around...$1.092 per year. Yikes.”
“What keeps us awake when we’re running on two hours of sleep makes us broke. Cool.”
“That’s where our salaries go.”
“...yep. That’s where. Surprise.”
“I don’t think they’ll really be surprised. Look how many hours we sleep. My sleep schedule is already buried.”
“Yeah, it is. Remember all the days where we went to bed at 1am and you got woken up at 4am? The next days were hell to stay awake.”
“...I remember. I hate those days. if I get a phone call, let me have five or six hours at least.”
“I’m starting to wonder if they’re not spying on us to see at which hour we go to bed.”
“Same. It happened way too many times. It’s getting quite...annoying.”
“Not really for me, I’d wake up because of the phone one time out of two. It was more annoying when I’d wake up to see I was alone.”
“You’d have a note, at least.”
“Yep, but....wasn’t amazing.”
“You would have been angry either way if I would have woken you up.”
“I would have gone straight back, yeah. You’re not wrong.”
“I’m always right. I’m not the best in the whole FBI building for nothing.”
“Quit showing off. We know you’re smart.”
“It was just in case you forgot.”
“How could I forget? You tell me that you have an 187 IQ without telling it every time you speak. It’s kind of obvious that you’re not an idiot to me.”
“You’re smart too, you could figure out that I was.”
“Is there a meaning behind that or…?”
“Why would there be one y/n?”
“I don’t know. You sound...narcissistic, and it was kind of like...you told I was dumb, Reid.”
“No, you’re not! I was kidding.”
“Mhm.”
“Okay, I’m sorry if I sounded ‘narcissistic’, it wasn’t my intention, I was just kidding.”
“I just have trouble knowing if you’re joking or not sometimes. But, you are forgiven, doctor.”
“It’s weird hearing you say that. Why don’t you just say ‘Spencer’?”
“Doctor, and Reid are more...fancy.”
“Okay, if you like it.”
“I do like it.”
“Then I don’t have anything to say on it.”
“Indeed.” She proudly replied.
“You know that I really like you?"
"I do." She answered, her shy smile breaking into a bigger one.
"Are you okay with uh...cheesy stuff? Because like, it kind of is."
"I've always had a liking for these, so I don't mind at all."
"Oh- okay, I was afraid you wouldn't uh…."
"...like it? Of course I do. I always like it when you say that you love me."
"I can't say otherwise, or even refrain myself from saying it. When I see you smile, I just...you know. I really like to see you happy."
"You're gonna make me cry Spencer- I spent a while doing my makeup." She joked.
"Okay, I'll wait until we're at home then."
"Okay."
++
"It's kinda good that we came in early. Coffee is better when it's taken between 9:30 to 11:30AM from what I saw."
"...really? There's a 'good timing' for it to be more effective? It's weird."
"Kind of. If you're tired at 11pm and decide to drink it, it's only gonna work at 50%."
"For real...it's annoying. Especially for you, your shifts are long as hell. I'm sorry for all the times I yelled at you over the phone."
"You had your reasons, I'm the best at getting people worried to death." He said, as he got his eyes back on the road after briefly shaking his head at her.
"Can't deny."
"No one can't."
"The number of times when you only had a battery problem, gosh. I wanted to kill you because of these."
"You didn't kill me, I'm still here."
"I can still kill you, if you want. I might have a pocket knife somewhere."
"No- I take it back, it's ok. I'm good." I said, "panicking".
"Hm. Too bad. It was a new one, 'wanted to try it on."
"...that's not really reassuring y/n."
"At least you'll be even more careful." She said, throwing me a sneaky smile.
"...will do."
"Good to know."
"I was going to say that you were going to be the death of me, but I'm already doing that to you with my job. Guess I'll have to find something else."
"You're gonna have to think hard. Because from what you said, your job is superior to everything in terms of scaring the death out of people."
"The #1."
"Premium #1. It's a better term." She corrected.
"...do you still love me though?"
"Of course, that's why I haven't killed you yet."
"I'm gonna have to sleep with one eye tonight."
"It's gonna be creepy man. I won't kill you, so, don't do that...please"
"I love how it's easy to make you change your mind with things you hate."
"I can still change my mind, even if I hate it."
"...sorry." I apologized with a tiny voice, which caused us to break into laughter for a minute, before I stopped before y/n, who still had a bit of trouble to stop laughing. "Do I need to call 911 or is everything okay?"
"It's just- your tiny voice is always fun as hell- gosh, I really had a good laugh."
"We don't need much to laugh apparently.' I pointed out.
"How can anybody not laugh at that? The way you said it was amazing."
"I'm gonna be offended if you keep laughing at me."
"I can't promise you I won't laugh again ah that."
"If you laugh at my voice, I'm allowed to laugh at you when you fall out of bed then."
"Okay, deal. You're allowed."
"At least it's even. But- you can't go back on that, you said you agreed on it."
"I promise, I'm not going back on it." She confirmed.
“Okay, just so it’s clear.”
“It is. I granted you permission to laugh at me.”
“I never granted you permission and you did it a lot of times, that’s not fair.”
“I’m allowed to laugh at you, it’s not the same. I have a special “nice girlfriend” pass.”
“...okay you have a point.”
“I’ve always had it. I’m smart, maybe smarter than you. The FBI should seriously hire me, they’re missing out without me.”
“We’re never going to be able to focus if we work together.”
“Then I guess you’ll have to present me.”
“Prepare yourself in advance. Once they’ll get your number, you’re gonna be overwhelmed with texts. They’re gonna want to know about the secret I kept.”
“Don’t worry about that, I’ve been thinking about it for a while. I may have to go there myself if you chicken out.”
“Hey, that’s not nice. I’m hurt.”
“Okay- I may have to go there myself if you don’t resolve yourself to do it- oh, it’s the same. Even if I word it differently, it’s the same.”
“I’m mad at you.”
“No, you’re not. You love me too much to be mad at me.”
“...how do you know everything about me? I’m scared.”
“I hacked into your brain.”
“Clearly.” I said; nervously laughing. “What do you think would be the password of my brain?”
“Um...either a doctor who or star trek related thing.”
“Hm. Maybe. It’s kinda difficult though; I like a lot of things. I’d probably end up putting your name if I can’t decide.”
“Yeah, same. There’s so much stuff.”
“If I take all of the books, tv shows, writers….yeah. Your name.”
“I’d probably struggle too. Your name.” She repeated.
“Isn’t it risky to let the other know our passwords?”
“I mean...we share the same brain cells sometimes, we’re 24/7 together, we’re interested in the same stuff so...eh. Not really.”
“That’s fair enough to be honest. I still remember last time; when we forgot to take the pasta out of the water because a video on twitter distracted us.”
“...I remember that. We had to order takeout after.”
“And the takeout wasn’t that good. I would have prefered the over-boiled pasta.”
“Same...these $35 weren’t that worth it.”
“$5 dollar over boiled pasta would have been better.”
“Yeah, it would have. But, let’s not try to forget it tonight. Over-boiled pasta isn’t my favorite thing.”
“Then we’ll have to turn off all of our devices.”
“...yeah. Let’s hope the clock won’t fail on us.”
“I’m not even sure if we have batteries left, and the store is closed.”
“Guess it’s gonna be one hell of a night.” She pointed out, as the car came to a stop.
“You said it.” I answered, as we both exited the car.
++
“Spencer, hey, wake up.”
“What’s...going on?”
“ ‘thing’s ringing.”
“What the…?” He mumbled as he took his phone from his nightstand, rubbing his eyes. “Oh, come on.”
“Guess we’re not having our fifth date.”
“...guess not. This sucks, I’m sorry.”
“ ‘s not your fault. At least let me have a quick hug before you go for god knows how long.”
“Just one, I really have to go.” I precised, wrapping my arms around her waist, as she put her head in the crook of my neck.
“I’m gonna miss you Spence.”
“Me too. I promise it won’t be too long.”
“Mhm. Oh, at least it’s not 4AM.”
“Yeah, it kind of surprised me to see that it was 9AM.”
“Same. Are you directly going on the jet or are you gonna uh...what’s the thing, briefing at the office?”
“Uh, yeah, Morgan told me to go to the office first.”
“Okay, call me before you go then.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll call.” I reassured, kissing her on the cheek as I sprinted through the hall. “Have a good day!”
“Same!” She yelled, as I closed the door.
What a great week ahead of us.
I annoyedly sighed as I got out of the building, taking the car as she had mentioned that she wouldn’t need it today.
I kind of felt bad, we had taken a small break on coffee mission-dates as we didn’t feel like it, and in the meantime, she also went to work for a day as a coworker needed someone to replace her, and after that, just when we planned to go out again...my phone rang, which was nothing but good.
I’ll make sure to call her as often as I can, that’s the least I can do till I come back.
++
As he left, I kind of ‘slept’ for at least ten minutes before I even found the motivation to get out of bed, which was kind of hard.
I’m really attached to my bed, and it’s really complicated for me to get up in the morning, Spencer helps me out usually.
It’s a miracle I managed to get out before falling back asleep and waking up at 12, especially on my own.
It’s kind of a great achievement to be honest, I should call him later to…
I paused, as I saw what seemed like his phone on the table.
...guess I’m not gonna call him.
What the hell am I going to do?
I can’t go there, no one even knows me.
Why did he have to forget his damn phone?
He doesn’t even have another one, how the hell am I going to do to get it to him?
I just...know his code, he randomly told it to me, and he knows mine too, so...yeah.
For god’s sake, I’m gonna have to call in, ‘I’m a cousin, friend, whatever’ excuse is gonna have to be the one I’m gonna throw.
Now or never I guess.
I turned on the phone, entering the password as I opened the contacts app, not really knowing who to call.
He had mentioned that Hotch was his superior, but I would be a stressed mess the second he’d begin taking, and it wouldn’t do anything but waste time.
What about Penelope? She seemed quite nice from his sayings, I could possibly reach out to her.
Let’s give it a try, I guess.
I clicked on the contact, pressing the call button as I brought the phone to my ear.
“Spencer, why are you calling? Aren’t you with Luke in the conference room?”
“It’s not Reid, I’m...a friend. He forgot his phone...and his badge thingy at my place, I saw the second thing as I called. I uh...didn't know he was working so I went to his place, and I guess he’s at work now.”
“Huh, he never forgets it. That’s weird. But, I never heard about you, are you like...a school pal or whatever person he met at a library or other?”
“Uh...We knew each other at school, yeah- anyway, is there a way for me to take it to him? I’ve...never been to his place, you know.”
“Oh uh...I can go see him, he’s right there. You could come here, but...I don’t know if you’re cleared to go here. Let me...oh, is your name y/n...y/l/n?”
“Yeah- did he put me in his emergency contacts or…?”
“Well, you’re in the visitor lists, so, I guess so, in a way, yeah. You must be an important friend then.”
“Yeah- we know...each other for a while- yeah.”
“That’s weird, he never mentioned you. I’ll have to ask about you later, I’m kind of interested.”
“Yeah- uh, he’s working at the FBI building, right? What floor is it even?”
“Yes, it’s that. It’s the sixth, you’ll have to hurry though, they should be going soon.”
“I’ll be right there. See you...I guess.”
“See you there!”
Oh god, that was the most stressful situation- how did I not panic? Did she find the fact that I’m able to enter his apartment weird and suspect I’m his partner? Am I supposed to be panicked or chill about it?
Shit.
**
As the briefing who lasted a bit more than planned came to his end, as I briefly checked my bag to see if everything was in it, my phone and badge were missing.
How did I forget them? I swore that I had taken it before leaving.
How can I even do?
I could possibly attempt a quick trip to my apartment, but that'd only be a waste of time.
I sighed as I climbed down the stairs, suddenly getting interrupted by the sound of a nearby elevator when I happened to walk in that direction before.
I...regret not thinking in advance about my words, as...people were behind me.
“Oh, hey babe- what’s...” I said as soon as she appeared, as I was coming to the realization that I had...messed up when the expressions around me changed. “...up.”
“...hey.” Y/N quietly said after noticing the look on everyone’s faces.
“Did he- is she?” Luke asked, confused.
“I- You forgot this- these.” She informed, taking the two items in her hand as she handed them to me.
‘What are we supposed to do?’ I inclined my head to the side, frowning my eyebrows.
‘I don’t know!’ She shrugged.
“Oh- are you his friend I had on the phone?” A blonde chirped, walking in.
“It’s ‘girlfriend’, apparently.” Luke corrected.
“But- So-”
“She’s my girlfriend, yeah. I didn’t tell you for..reasons, and-”
“You guys should go- We’ll talk all about this when we get back.” Y/N interrupted.
“Reid's been hiding you, and you don’t think I want to know about that?” Penelope asked.
“But- you’re working on a case, I’m not supposed to-”
“If it’s FBI shit, you’ll just put your hands over your ears and close your eyes, it’s okay.” She waved it off, pulling her aside as they went in the elevator.
“I’ll see you later Spence.”
“Okay, see you-” I said, as the door closed. “No- No questions. Not know.”
“We didn’t set anything.” JJ answered.
“...yet.” Emily continued.
++
“So, what happened? We didn’t see anything, I mean- I kind of suspected...sometimes but-”
“It’s...kind of long. I mean you have work and-”
“I can do two things at the same time.”
“Well uh...we didn’t know each other at first.
“So like- it’s a fate thing or-”
“Maybe? I mean- I lost my diary at the library, I forgot it when I went to work, and he told me that he found it, didn’t want it to get lost, and so, he asked around where I could be found and, we met.”
“It sounds like cinderella.”
“...kind of. Never thought about that.”
“It really is, like- if you had never lost it, he’d just be a guy sitting with his book.”
“I wouldn’t have the courage to talk to him, because...I think I would have found him interesting.”
“You can thank your brain for making you forget about it. You got a nice boyfriend because of it- wait, I didn’t ask if you were-”
“We’re not engaged yet-”
“I’m gonna tell him to hurry as soon as I get a call with him- How did he not already propose to you?”
“It’s okay- It’s only been one year and a few months, we have-”
“Please let me plan the wedding.”
“It can wait I’m-”
“I have to plan it.”
“Okay but-”
“You’re gonna have to get used to here, you’re gonna come...quite often. Maybe with my apartment too, and Rossi’s. He organizes amazing game nights, it’s always fun.”
“...that’s why Spencer told me to prepare myself-”
“We’re not gonna let you go for a while. I bet they’re harassing him with questions right now.”
“I don’t have anything else today so- guess I’ll be staying for a bit. I’ll have to go later, though. For like- sleeping and all.”
“Will you come back tomorrow?”
“I have work...the craft shop I told you about.”
“Oh- then keep going with the story then-”
“You sure- you-”
“They’re not calling yet. Keep going.”
“Okay- so, he went to the shop…asked where he could find me, as he had something belonging to me- I was in the storage room and my coworker came saying someone had a thing that was mine, and recognized the thing as she saw me with it before. I went to the front- where he was, she left and uh...he gave it back to me. We briefly talked and, as he left I asked him his name- as he knew mine, and...he left.”
“That idiot didn’t ask for your number?”
“He could have come back, I don’t know. He knew where to find me, and...same for me. Next uh...we both had work, I suppose for him, too. And as I got a day off, I went back to the library to also thank the employee that had told him where to find me...and he came again.”
“What happened next? I need to know-”
“Uh- I think we uh...stayed there, for a while, actually. Until we were told that it’d close, and...hung out together till...almost 2AM.”
“Did you-”
“No- just talking. We barely met, we wouldn’t- We were going to go out on a date...later. I asked him first.”
“You did? Oh my god that’s so cute!”
"That was kind of stressful. You don't get to ask guys out pretty often."
"Was Reid your first boyfriend?"
"As a serious relationship, yeah. All of the others were in high school but...they were all idiots. Spencer's the first that...cares about me."
"He's always been very nice in general, I can guarantee that you'll never regret letting him enter in your life, he's gonna treat you like a princess."
"He's already gone through that, he's always supporting me, I...really feel safe, and loved, all the time."
"I'm glad everything's going well for you two. You could have come sooner, we've been asking him quite often if he'd ever present his partner as we were his parents."
"Yeah we- waited a while. We were actually planning on telling it, soon."
"Well, the 'soon' arrived."
"It was kinda…"
"Unexpected? Yeah, I know."
"It really was but...it's not as stressful as I thought. I...really like it here."
"You're gonna feel home with us, too. You're already there with our genius boy. I can tell you guys really love each other."
"We do, a lot."
"I'm glad for that. You're gonna have a lot to tell every time you come here though."
"Don't worry, I'll tell you everything there is to tell, and let you plan whatever thing there would be to celebrate. Even my wedding."
"Do I really have to wait to plan it?" Penelope asked.
"We could get married in five years, who knows. Are you gonna plan it already?"
"...probably."
"Do I get to help?"
"If you have good taste, yeah."
"It shouldn't be a problem."
"So- Oh, here they are."
"And...back to work." I said.
"Wish I didn't have to now." She sighed, answering. "You've reached the office of knowledge, what can I do for you?"
++
“So? How did it go with the team?”
“Chaotic. I wish I had taken a car or something instead of the jet who lasted way too long for just three hours.”
“Penelope already wants to plan our wedding here.”
“She did?”
“Yeah. If I didn’t stop her, she would have probably purchased dresses and called Rossi.”
“They also asked me about the wedding here.”
“What can I say? They’re really like a real family.”
“Yeah, they are. You’re gonna like them a lot.”
“I feel like it. Penelope already told me to get used to here because of how often she’ll call. I’m probably going to end up working here.”
“You don’t need to work here to see me, they know now. You’re cleared to come whenever you want.”
“If only you hadn’t- no, I would have probably jumped at your arms if I hadn’t seen them.”
“At least we don’t have to think about it for weeks, just to not say it at the end. It’s done.”
“Just a week ago, you said that you wanted for it to be special, it wasn’t very special to me.”
“It’s kind of...special. No one did that here.”
“Not the kind of ‘special’ you described.”
“It was a...surprising ‘kind of special’.”
“Did you just make that up?”
“I only had that in mind.”
“I thought that you were intelligent enough to just say ‘surprising’.”
“You asked which kind of special it was.”
“Unexpected would have been good too.”
“...yeah. I wanted to spice it up.”
“I’m giving a 7/10 to your spice.”
“That’s the average at least.”
“But- it was fine. I’m being a bit mean.”
“Are you mad it went like that though?”
“Not really. I know you wouldn’t have resolved yourself to say it, so...it’s said. They know, and...I really like them. You could have done it sooner, I missed out. They’re really like you described them to me.”
“Yeah, I would have waited...even more. Let’s hope you’ll get to pass by often, they’re gonna want to see you all the time. I’m pretty sure you have pre-invites to all of the parties they’ll ever organize.”
“At least we’ll be with other people and...do other stuff than staying all day at home, you know.”
“You’re right, yeah. I’ll diversify our days-off.”
“Heard Rossi knows how to cook pretty good pasta; that’ll change from our failed ones.”
“...definitely. He also makes us cook with him sometimes, but...I think I’ll pass for the ‘boil the pasta’ part.”
“Same for me. I prefer not to ruin the entire thing.”
“If he teaches us, we could get better.”
“Nah...I prefer not to. I’ll stick to the ‘make the pasta’ part.”
“It’s hard to say no to Rossi in general, good luck with that.”
“Is he like everyone’s grandpa or what?”
“Uh...I guess I’d say so. You could kind of see him as that, but I don’t know if he ever allowed anyone in the team to call him like that, except for Hotch, JJ and Matt’s kids.”
“Thanks for the warning, it’s noted.”
“He’s gonna have a bunch of nicknames for you though. He likes to do that with...pretty much everyone he knows.”
“I’m okay with that, he sounds nice from what I heard from you...and Penelope. I’m gonna stay a bit more, she wants...more information about what she doesn’t know yet about us.”
“Send me a text to confirm you’re alive, you’re gonna be staying for a while.”
“Will do, don’t worry. You might receive pictures too, she proposed and I agreed as I always like to take pictures of yours. I...also sent some of you to her, and...she might have sent them to the others.”
“They’re looking at me so...I think they got them.”
“At this point they’re gonna make a scrapbook out of it.”
“They might.”
“They don’t mean to be annoying, I’m sure. They’re just…”
“...really invested. They’re gonna want to know everything there is to say and know. Especially for you as they don’t know you as well as they know me.”
“I guess I’ll be spending my days-offs at another workplace. I’m okay with it.”
“People are gonna wonder if you’re not working there after seeing you that often, you’ll have to correct a lot of people.”
“I look smart, of course they’re gonna think I’m working there. They should have hired me by now, they’re missing out a lot.”
“You’re right, they should.”
“I can’t guarantee I’ll be with the profilers though, my talent has its limits. I can only read your face.”
“You’re only a profiler with me then.”
“Yeah, I’m a special one. I’m not risking my life doing it.”
“And not scaring people?”
“Mhm. I’m not.”
“I can tell you’re smiling without seeing you. We got a special talent in common.”
“Oh, come on, you’re the one with 187 IQ, you got the bigger talent here.”
“No, mine is smaller. You lose things all the time, that’s the real talent I don’t have.”
“I’m not doing it on purpose- And be glad I have that ‘talent’, because without it you wouldn’t even be speaking to me right now.”
“I never said it was a bad one, it’s a good one. I met you thanks to it.”
“I guess I can believe that.”
“Believe it! It’s the truth.”
"I love teasing you, I get to hear the squeaky voice.”
“Hey- no teasing about it, I always do it, I can’t help but not have another pitch, it’s like that.”
“I also have one, we’re quit. But- yours is more high-pitched to me.”
“It’s not, I always have a deep and masculine voice- please don’t tell me you’re on speaker.”
“...I’m not on speaker but...she may have- she heard it.”
“Let’s hope she won’t say it to someone else.”
“I can’t guarantee that, but...it’s not the end of the world though.”
“Yeah, it’s not. I’m sorry I...I have to go, in a bit.”
“It’s alright, we got to chat for like...five minutes, it’s a good one.”
“It is. I’ll try to call, or shoot a text if I can.”
“Okay. Love you. Go catch bad guys- and hang up first before we stay another ten minutes.”
“Got it. Love you too. Good luck with Penelope.”
“You’re still on the line.”
“I know- can you do it? I feel bad hanging up at you.”
“Fine. Have a good day-”
I wish we’d have all day to ourselves right now, it’s a bit hard to not have her with me all of a sudden.
Let’s hope I get to be home soon.
++
I wish I didn’t have to witness what happened there.
It...did something to me.
I didn’t know anything about her, except the same things as everyone, such as her name, personal information and their job, but...when we went there, and saw that she had already died, I felt...weird.
As if they were someone I knew, it hit way too close to home for me, as if they were the feelings I would have for y/n if anything would ever happen.
It may be weird to think about that...out of the blue, and it also may be a bit soon, or sudden but, I thought a lot about when she told me that Garcia was already planning our wedding as soon as they began talking.
It really got me thinking again, as it definitely wasn’t the first time that occured.
A lot of the people we dealt with in cases lost their lost ones suddenly, didn’t get a proper goodbye, regretted their last words before they last saw them, and...even if that’s not the case with her, I always leave, leaving her to wonder whether I’m gonna come back in one piece or at the hospital.
I’m aware of how bad I’m scaring her every time; she’s always waiting for a text to know if I’m alive to stop her from worrying, and even though I know she won’t have risks of getting hurt in most cases, I can’t stop but get scared for her, especially when I’m so far from her.
I’ve seen what happened with other loved ones in my team, and that’s not what I want to happen to her.
It’s only been...almost two years, it’s not enough at all, but...we never really talked about the future, getting married and all that stuff, we’ve been fine staying as boyfriend and girlfriend, it didn’t really matter, and we had all the time to talk about it.
So...I don’t really know if that’d be sudden.
But, at the same moment...I do want to do that; y/n means a lot to me, and that would be...mainly stressful but, it’s something that means a lot.
I want to do this, really, but...I don’t want it to be like a few days ago, it wasn’t planned, and again, I would have wanted for it to go differently.
But, after that case, and many more that happened, what if something happens before I come back? What if I get other cases, more work?
It could, and could not happen, I can’t know in advance.
That’s why I hate it when I don’t know things I actually need information about, it freaks me out.
I have no way to plan what could happen, and it’s even worse for y/n, from what I can imagine.
If something does happen, she won’t be the first to know, but due to the possible lack of calls, or anything else, she could first think of something bad, but won’t know it it’s quite bad, if nothing happened, or if she’s gonna have a call she never wished for.
I know it’s weird to think about all of that, but my job isn’t made of riskless things, I’m aware of it.
I wouldn’t be thinking about that if it was any less calm.
All that my brain can think of is that the rest of my life has to be spent with her, I can’t do it with anyone else, if she’s not there.
A simple diary made us meet each other, without it, my life wouldn’t have changed much from what I can say.
It really is fun to think that we met because of an object.
It’s quite weird to go back to when she wasn’t here, I’ve been so used to being with her.
It’s probably cliché, but I can’t imagine not having her around now that I’ve met her.
She’s sort of a part of me if I had to describe it.
She’s the reason why I look even more forward to the end of a case, going home, doing simple things as walking around the neighborhood, grocery shopping, or even getting ready for bed.
The last is the best moment of the day along with waking up having her next to me; I’m often awake first in the morning, so I get to look at her a bit more in advance before she wakes up on her own.
She always smiles first thing when she wakes up, even if she’s really tired.
That’s one of the things I prefer.
I always end up staying longer as she had trouble getting out of bed, I’d even get her out of bed by carrying her for a bit as if she was a child.
But, it makes her feel happy and loved, so, I don’t mind doing it.
When we get ready for bed, I’m usually the last to sleep as I watch her until she falls asleep.
I can’t help but do that every time, even if I’m a bit tired.
She yells at me a bit when she hears I do that instead of enjoying all of the hours I have, but, I just tell her the only excuse I had and always have.
I still haven’t found another, really.
Probably because the one I always tell her is the only that has ever existed to me, I don’t think it will change.
It probably won’t, I like that excuse.
I really don’t want anything to change, I really like the way everything is.
How she is, how she looks, when we’re together, I just can’t imagine something better.
That’s why I just...with all I’ve seen around me, what happened, of all the losses I’ve experienced, I can’t stand thinking about that ever changing, I have to tell her how I love her for the millionth time, hold her as much as I can, memorize all of the details of her face once again, and again.
I always do them more than we can recall, but...I want to do that once again, even if she tells me I’ve done these enough.
I want to express how much I love her, even if she knows it as that’s the first thing she gets to know in the morning, when we go to bed, when I leave for work, at the end of a call, or even at random moments when I look at her for a while, and end up randomly saying: “you know that I love you so bad, right?”
She smiles at it, every time.
After that, she often ends up telling me how cheesy I can be sometimes before kissing my lips and laying close to me if she wasn’t already with me.
I don’t want that to stop, I have to feel it again, think about it after it happens for hours, it can’t stop.
I also hope I won’t have to have her go through all of that fear when I leave every time.
I always feel bad about it to this day, and I know it won’t change until I decide to quit it, but...as much as she hates the risks and all of the stuff coming with it, she’ll kill me if I decide to quit, she knows how much that job is important.
So...I have to tell her, again.
I want to be able to be with her, go through whatever problem could happen, agreements we might have, I want to do all of this.
I’m willing to do all of this, no matter how tough it gets.
Y/N’s the only one I ever cared so much about, I don’t think I’ve ever done that with anyone else other than my mother.
I’m not also saying that I don’t care about my team who could pass as my own family, but, y/n’s the one.
The one that makes me feel special, that I always want to see, that pulls me through the day even if I’m having a bad case, the one that is always willing to talk even if it’s 2 in the morning, she never gave up on me, I don’t remember one moment when I wouldn’t hear about her.
I don’t want to hesitate about anything else.
I’m sure about this.
I will tell her exactly what I thought about, what I’ll think, what I thought from the beginning, whether she already knows some details by heart.
And I’ll tell her anyway for the only and one reason that it’s because I’ve always been so cheesy and hopelessly in love with her.
That is the only thing that will never change.
++
I don’t think I’ve even ran so fast after having to pass to the office for just some papers.
I’ve barely said goodbye to the team, and they kind of were surprised to see me rushing so bad.
They’ve probably figured out that it was because I was excited to see y/n now that they know about her, and, that is the case, but I don’t think that any of them even know what I’m about to do.
I really can’t believe it’s actually happening myself.
I’m about to do something that usually takes a while to figure out, think about, plan, and that isn’t that easy to do as it’s not something that’s to be taken lightly.
But I’m really sure, I’m aware of all of the possible reasons why I’m doing it.
I’m aware of why I’m about to marry her.
Im not doing this as a joke, or anything else that wouldn’t make it serious.
I want to wake up knowing she’s the person I’ll be with my whole life, that I’ll be able to love even more, brag about more, think again when I’m not doing well.
I want her to know all of that.
I just can’t wait.
It’s...really crazy and sudden, and I’ve thought that it was stupid at first because of these reasons, but I don’t think it quite is.
I’m doing this for a reason, and I’ve never been so sure and confident even if that is the most stressful thing I could ever do in my life.
I just hope I won’t collapse...even if that’s a bit exaggerated to me, but, I guess it’s the whole tension, stress that’s talking.
She has no idea that I planned to do that, the only thing she knows is that I’m on my way as I told her before driving home.
If there wasn’t other vehicles, or a speed limit, I think that I would have already been there.
When I pulled out of the parking lot as no places were available nearby, I bounced my feet on the floor of the elevator all the way.
I’m kind of surprised that it didn’t crash because of that.
I’m also glad that I managed to make it to my front door, still alive.
When I took out my keys out of my pocket, missing the lock once before getting it right as I took a large breath, I already heard the sound of the bedroom door opening in a hurry when she heard the front door.
After hearing a short fumbling once I had closed the door; she had jumped in my arms as soon as I turned back to her.
The first thing that really came to mind was that she had immediately felt like home; as she always did.
She hugged me, without a word for whatever time was enough to her, until she pulled back to probably give me air.
“Welcome back. Sorry for the...sudden jump. I hope you-”
“I didn’t.” I replied, planting a short kiss on her lips. “I’ll never mind, never.”
“I know. Do you want me to uh...cook something for you? I don’t think we have much left except some eggs, I forgot to go to the store after work.”
“Don’t worry about that, I’m fine with it. I’ll help you with it so you don’t burn the apartment down. It’ll be a bit...bad to have to deal with a fire now.”
“You’re not wrong, yeah. Let’s avoid that, but- don’t criticize my possible talents! The only thing I’ll burn is the food itself. I’ll be turning the gas off as soon as I’ll see the food burning.”
“Okay- I trust you. Do you want me to let you cook on your own?”
“I like being independent, but…no, stay.”
“Alright, I’ll make sure we don’t eat burned food. We both deserve nice food after the long day we’ve had.”
“Too bad we don’t have a heart pan...you know I would have wanted to do that.”
“We’ll buy one tomorrow, don’t worry. Look, just so we don’t forget…” I took my phone from the couch, walking back next to her. “Okay, it’s on the reminder app.”
“You won’t forget it, each stuff you read stays in your memory. ‘Can’t guarantee for me.” Y/N admitted, lightly chuckling.
“You won’t forget, don’t worry. Don’t overestimate your brain.”
“I forget stuff all the time, I don’t trust him too much.”
“Don’t call yourself dumb, you’re certainly not. You’re very smart, and- you wouldn’t be even awake without your brain.”
“Oh, yeah, forgot the science thingy part. I kind of figured out that you’d be telling me that, you’re really predictable.”
“I can’t argue on that one.”
“You, not arguing? You always have an explanation that’s as long as an essay. You’re lucky that I’m interested in it.”
“I’m quite surprised that you manage to stay interested all long. Not all of the people I work with make it through the whole thing.”
“It’ll never be boring to me.”
“You sure about that? I may deliver a talk worth a four page essay.”
“Not so late, tomorrow, I promise.”
“Okay, tomorrow. Let’s cook before we get too tired.”
“Can you go first? I’m always afraid of getting burned by that.”
“I was going to do it, I was kind of afraid for you.”
“Oh- thanks, I guess.”
“Anything for you.”

Just as if I didn’t have everything planned in my head for hours, once we did the eggs, talked a bit, and layed on the bed without bothering to get rid of our outside clothes;
I still didn’t know.
I was beyond stressed.
Would it be going well?
Would she react well?
If I suddenly don’t know what to say, what do I even do next?
Of course, I was still very sure of it, more than anything, but turns out that the stress just didn’t want me to do that apparently.
I still don’t get why it had to get in the way just now.
I just have to overcome it, it’ll be...totally okay.
It’s going to be okay.
I just have to somehow get to talk and manage to know what I want to say...I guess?
“Are you okay? You didn’t say anything for a while.”
“Oh, sorry I...I was thinking about something.”
“Is it a bad or good thing?”
“It’s a good one, not bad...at all. I just don’t know if...I can say it. It’s a stressful one.”
“I’m not sleeping for a bit more, you can go ahead. If it’s stressful, I guess it must be an important thing.”
“It’s an important one, yeah.”
“Go ahead then, I’ll be listening to every word, won’t miss a bit. You got all of my attention.” Y/N said, sitting up on the side of the bed.
“Okay, okay. Um...I don’t really know where to start, and how to, but...I think I’ll be saying everything at one moment or another.” I explained, as I sat up next to her. “I’ve been thinking about it for a bit, and slightly hesitated at the beginning as I told myself that it’d be a stupid decision, but I know that it’s something I’m sure of, it’s not something I thought of for a minute before deciding that I’d be doing it. I have to say that I haven’t been thinking about it deeply since months, but the time I thought about it was enough to decide that it was what I wanted.”
“You’re starting to worry me right now...I thought it was a good thing, and- you know I freak out easily…”
“It’s definitely a good thing, I just...there’s a lot to say. It might be an essay long, I just want to say everything that’s important.”
“Okay, I’m listening. You can keep going, sorry.” She apologized, as I put my hand on hers to reassure her.
“I...I’ve had a while to think about all of this. Barely two years, but...I never really thought about it to the point of having a whole essay to say. There’s just so many things to say about how I feel about you that I can’t select which ones to put so it could be shorter. I know we’ve talked about it a lot of times, but thanks for purchasing that diary in the first place, it’s what started our story, basically. I could also thank the one that made it but...I have no idea.” I admitted, pulling a short laugh from her. “And thanks for forgetting it, too. Your forgiveness came in handy, and we’re here now. It may be all cliché and all, but that’s what changed me. A simple book, that lead me to you. I can’t thank you enough for talking to me, and not letting go.
I really thought that I was nothing but a stranger that found something for you, and that you’d end up moving on. I didn’t move on after that, you kept staying in my head. I was persuaded that you had forgotten me and that I should...leave it there. We only knew each other’s names, that didn’t mean that I could talk to you more to me. Now, I kind of want to punch my past self for that.
I turned out to be more than wrong. When I stepped in that day, I was going to find some excuse to talk to you, and pretend I didn’t see you, but I couldn’t do that. You were all I could see in that place. Pretending that I didn’t see you would have been rude.”
“You could have done it, I wouldn’t have been mad. I probably would have done the same.” She admitted.
“I couldn’t have, really. You were all I could think about, so, not looking at you after not being able to see you? That wasn’t possible. I can’t even do that now. When I look at you, I can allow myself to basically let go of whatever stresses me in my work. I know I shouldn’t be talking about it too much, but thank you for supporting me, even after all of the scares I gave you. I won’t be talking about quitting as you said that you’d kill me if I’d do it.”
“The offer is still up. I won’t let you quit until you’re at least 60.”
“I’m not planning on dying yet, I won’t quit. But, I’m sorry for all of the stress that I put you through. I wish I could make it less stressful. You’re so strong for that, I really don’t know how you manage to not have a heart attack, you’re truly amazing.
You can be proud of that though. I want you to be.
You’ve made me feel stronger because of this too. Your strength, your support, your love, all of that allows me to pull through.
I can’t imagine having to go through that without you. You became such an important part of my life, that I just...can’t imagine not having you here by my side. You matter so much to me, I really want you to know that. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, I can’t do that with anyone else now that I’ve met you. You make me feel so loved, so happy, everyday, and...I want to feel like this forever. I don’t want that to change ever.”
Don’t screw this up.
You got this.
“Since I’ve met you, you’ve given me a reason to be better, to do better. Something changed when you came into my life, I’m not the doctor Reid from two years ago anymore. I would constantly overthink, I was never sure of anything, I was a mess. But now, you’ve pushed me to say what I have in mind, you’ve made me more confident, and I’ve never been sure of something my entire life. My old self wouldn’t have done that at all.
I've realized that I can't live without you anymore. I've lost too many things, and I definitely can't lose you. You're the most amazing thing that's ever happened to me. And before you say anything, not even books, TV shows, or whatever else is better. You're the one that I love the most, and that I'll also love for many and many years.
I've...also realized that I've said the entirety of a monologue, and you're probably wondering what that was for so, I'll get to the point." I explained, briefly leaving her side to take something from my pocket, a gasp leaving her lips as I suddenly put a knee on the floor, pulling the box open.
"It would be an immeasurable pleasure to be able to share my life with you, as long as we both shall live. So...I, Spencer Reid, would like to know if the wonderful woman in front of my eyes would accord me the pleasure of marrying me?"
"Of course I will, you idiot!" Y/N exclaimed, pressing her lips against mine.
"Is that a yes though?" I asked, still against her lips.
"It's a yes." She answered, as we both pulled back from the other when I took her left hand, slightly struggling to take the ring out of the box.
After a few seconds, and a few laughs, I nervously slid the ring on her finger, looking at her when I was done.
"...I understand the stress you had now. I...I really don't have the words right now. I kind of feel bad about not having anything to say. I just...want you to know that I also love you, so much. Thank you for being here with me, and...marrying me. This is...the best thing, ever." She said, her eyes watering.
"I would marry you every day if it was possible."
"If only. We have to plan a whole wedding now. I think we're gonna need a lot of help."
"That depends when you want it to happen."
"That also depends how fast it can be organized. Because if it can be done in one week, that would be...amazing. I can't wait another year."
"It's as it was already done babe. I bet Penelope already planned everything from the moment she met you."
"I wouldn't be surprised. Gosh, I can't wait to be able to call you my husband." She admitted.
"And I can't wait to be able to call you my wife."
++
"Can you...frickin' believe that? We met her just a bit ago, and like...one month after I get to organize their wedding? This is totally crazy. She even let me help choose her dress, her damn dress!"
"Of course she'd let you help Penelope. She couldn't have even said no to you, and as she didn't say no, she asked for your help as none of them knew how to do all this." Luke answered.
"I could literally drop out of the FBI and become a wedding planner at this point. Don't yell at me in calls, because you know what I'm gonna do next."
"We won't, don't worry about it. Just enjoy the wedding, you literally help plan the best day of their lives, they're not gonna be doing that every day." He reassured.
"That's too bad that it's only gonna last for a day. It's a shame we'll have to take everything down though."
"Just enjoy. Calm down for a bit."
Penelope took a deep breath, tapping Luke’s shoulder as she began leaving, but stopped for a second. "I'm gonna see if she's even ready. Someone go check on the boy wonder."
“Yes, ma’am.”
++
“Y/N? Can I enter? It’s Pen.” Garcia asked, knocking a few times.
“As long as you’re not Spencer with a voice changer or something, yeah.” I said, as the lock of the door made itself heard signaling that the door was open, before she closed it on her way in.
“I thought you weren’t ready yet! Spencer’s gonna be downstairs soon.”
“I’m ready physically, not mentally. This is the part when I stress down.”
“What are you stressed about? Here, sit for a bit.” She motioned, putting her hand on mine when we had sat down.
“I don’t know...I, it’s the whole wedding thing. It’s not about Spencer or anything, I do still want to marry him, but...I’m just stressing about it. It didn’t hit me until today.”
“I get it. Lots of people, the big event, and mostly, marrying someone who matters. Don’t tell me one of your worries is that he’s not gonna find you beautiful or regret. There’s no way. Because, I know...we weren’t supposed to send messages to the boys before today, but, he spoke about you practically all night. He couldn’t believe that it was happening, I mean- who wouldn’t be stressed about marrying such a beautiful girl? So, stop that. All of the people here are only friends you know and family. There’s nothing else to stress about, I listed everything, and none of them is something you should overstress about, it’s going to be okay.”
“I know, I...I just stressed all of a sudden. And, I know he doesn’t think that, I just had the stress bringing all of those...stressful thoughts. Am I the only one who stresses at their wedding or is it normal? I don’t want to ruin anything because I’ll end up stressing, not knowing what to say-”
“You will be okay. You’ll know what to say the minute you’ll see him. Come here-” She rushed forward, taking my hand to put me on my feet as she directed me in front of the mirror. “Do you think Spencer isn’t stressed too when he thinks that he’s gonna marry you? You’re beautiful, amazing, strong, extremely kind, dedicated, I mean- he’s so lucky to have you. Anyone else would be stressed, it’s normal, you don’t have to think that you’re ruining anything, at all. Because that’s all I see when I look at that mirror. There’s not enough adjectives to describe your beauty right now, I think we’re gonna have to invent new ones at this point. I mean- look at you!” She exclaims, putting her head on my shoulder as she smiles.
“I’m probably also stressed because of how handsome he is too. I mean…wow. I’m marrying Spencer fucking Reid. It’s not anyone, he’s a literal god and a total genius.”
“And he is going to marry y/n fucking y/l/n. You’re not anyone as well, you’re a smokin’ hot bomb, a goddess and a strong, independent woman.”
“Okay, I am smokin’ hot.”
“Bet you are. So, now that everything is okay, you wait here. Don’t worry, Hotch’s gonna come soon, he’s probably finishing off a talk with our boy wonder. I’ll see you in a bit!” Penelope hurried out, leaving the room.
I’m marrying...fucking Spencer Reid.
Someone pinch me. I feel like this is a dream.
Ow- it’s not one.
It’s...really happening.
++
“I now declare you husband, and wife. You can kiss your wife, kid.” Rossi announces, as I advanced towards y/n, covering both sides of her face with my hands as the embrace deepens afterwards.
Soon enough, whoops and hollers echo through the backyard, as we pull back with smiles on both on our faces, maintaining our gaze on the other.
It’s official.
We’re finally both able to call the other our spouse, from now on, and forever.
Just two years ago, I never would have thought that this would happen.
I was just Spencer Reid, a guy that would always overthink, think he wasn’t good enough for anyone, didn’t think about ever going on dates, I was a total mess...until that diary.
It’s a bit ridiculous to say that I’ve overcome what would have refrained me from ever being with someone thanks to an object, but...that’s really what happened.
Who in the hell would have even thought that a person that I barely knew with only a few words would slowly become a familiar person, then a friend, a partner, and as I totally didn’t expect...my wife.
It all seems unreal, even now.
But it really is, believe it or not. I heard the words well, slid her ring on her hand; after that, she slid my ring on mine, Rossi announced it...and we kissed.
I pinched myself while she wasn’t looking, and it still wasn’t a dream.
I was married to her.
Even when we talked to our friends, we never let go of the other.
We were probably afraid that one of us was going to disappear if we ever let go of their hand.
I have no idea if some found it weird, I didn’t even care.
I was with her, she was with me, and we were both married.
That’s the only thing that mattered.
And...now that I think about what sealed our fates and lives forever as I looked at y/n;
It’s a good thing that I paid attention to my surroundings that day.

I'm sorry about your presentation, idk if your still doing hcs but can you do one where Reggie is julies older brother by 1 or 2 years and Julie in love with Luke and Luke likes her as well but neither will do anything because of Reggie. If not its ok. ☺
I brought up an idea similar to this a while back! But let’s rework it.
In this scenario, let’s say that the Molinas and the Peters' have known each other for a long while, ever since Julie and Reggie were kids. They’ve pretty much grown up together.
And then they get older and a lot of shit happens. Julie’s mom dies. And Reggie’s parents finally get a divorce.
As the two families are healing and trying to move on, eventually Ray and Reggie’s mom sorta just clicked.
And years later, they ended up getting married- officially making Reggie Julie’s brother.
They move into the Molina’s house and they transition to one big family so seamlessly that Julie often forgets that Reggie isn’t her brother in the biological sense. He’s always been an older figure to her, always looking out for her and Carlos.
She’s so used to having him around. And even used to having Reggie’s friends around growing up.
They all met when they were in middle school, but Julie hasn’t seen them much over the years, only seeing them during special occasions or whenever she would go to the Peters’ from time to time.
She remembers Alex, the shy blonde one who does his best to keep the peace when everyone got too rowdy.
And then Bobby, who is just hitting his stride in his sullen, moody teenager phase. Still nice though.
And Luke, the wild one. The guy was all long haired, energetic, and sporting some gnarly braces the last time she saw him.
She hears a knock at the door the night Reggie and his mom had moved in. Julie opens it and it’s the boys: Alex, Bobby, and- woah.
“Julie?” Luke smiles, his long hair cut to a still shaggy ‘do, braces gone, and now ripped, telling by how he’s proudly wearing his Nirvana cutoffs, “No way! Long time no see,”
“Y-yeah,” Julie instantly wishes that she wasn’t wearing her dinosaur slippers at the moment. She leads them all inside, telling them to make themselves at home while they wait for Reggie to come down.
Julie hurries off to her room, red in the face, internally freaking out about the idea of a cute guy coming over to her house on a regular basis.
A cute guy she cannot get involved with... imagine how Reggie would react...
The guys note the dreamlike expression on Luke’s face as he watched Julie go up the stairs. Once she’s gone, Luke whirls around, “Has she always been like that?”
“Squirrely?”
“No...” Luke drops his voice down to a whisper, “I mean, has she always been that cute?”
Alex and Bobby shoots this idea down real quick, “Woah! No no no! Off-limits! She's off-limits, Luke!”
“How come?”
“She’s Reggie’s sister,”
“Step-sister,”
“Still,” Bobby cuts in, “You know Reggie. He takes the brother role very seriously. He won’t let you stand a foot away from her if he heard what you just said.”
“If who heard what?” Reggie says, coming down the stairs.
“Nothing!” They all exclaim, and Luke silently thanks the boys for not ratting him out and invoking Reggie’s wrath.
He does know how Reggie can get when it comes to Julie. He’s already so protective of her. So he’s not going to try and do anything to piss him off.
And besides, he just finds her cute. It’s not like anything’s gonna come from it.
Wrong.
Luke and Julie are hardcore pining for each other the more time the boys spend over at the house.
And they’re over a lot.
Julie would come into the garage, now a studio space for the boys’ band, and watches them practice.
Somehow Luke finds a way to gravitate towards her. Always standing beside her, ready to show a song he’s been working on or just ask how she’s doing.
And Julie would find an excuse to hang around the boys, whether offering to help with songwriting or help clean up the equipment. One time, she hands Luke his guitar and their hands met. They both blush but quickly part before Reggie could see what transpired.
They sneak little casual touches here and there, both to gauge if the other person reciprocates their feelings and to hide whatever was going on between them from Reggie.
This all coming from the fear of Reggie flipping out on them.
Apparently when the boys bring up Nick from Julie’s class, joking about the way he was starry-eyed when dancing with Julie (secretly trying to get a rise out of Luke), Reggie immediately asks Julie about a thousand questions:
“Who is he? What does he do?”
“Do? He’s a student. In my grade...”
“Oh. No job? So he’s a deadbeat, huh? Doesn’t sound like a suitable match,”
“What are you going on about?”
“Does he like the Star Wars Prequels? Yes or No? There is a right answer”
“What does this have to do with anything, Reggie?”
“I need to know if he’s good enough for you!”
Reggie starts watching Nick like a hawk at school, going out of his way to intimidate the junior (well as much as he could. he’s still pretty much a puppy and super non-threatening).
It’s getting ridiculous.
So Julie goes to talk to Luke, to try and nip this in the bud before Reggie notices their weird behavior. She manages to play off needing help to get something in the laundry room to get him alone without suspicion.
“Look, we can’t do this anymore... whatever this is,”
Luke nods, “Agreed. Reggie’s my best friend.”
“And he’s my brother,”
“I don’t want to do something that would upset him,”
“Me neither. Glad we’re on the same page,”
“Right. Same page. So just friends. Deal?” she sticks her hand out.
He shakes it, “Deal,”
They lock eyes, appreciating how the other one looks under the warm dimmed light.
It takes only about .5 seconds for them to crash their lips onto each other’s, igniting a full on make out session. And by the time they finished, they realize their mistake.
Uh oh.
They can’t go back after this.
Now they really have something to hide from Reggie.
They sneak around the house, whenever they could.
Luke would make up an excuse to grab water or go to the bathroom in the middle of rehearsal, just to sneak up to Julie’s room to grab a quick kiss and maybe a small tickle fight just so he could hear that laugh he loves so much.
And Julie would join the boys at the dinner table, sitting next to him and discreetly slipping cue love notes into his pocket that she knows would make him blush and smile all goofily later (and if they turn into potential song lyrics? Well that's for them to know).
Alex warns Luke the next day, “I think he’s catching on. Be more careful,”
They spend more time together now that Julie starts writing songs for the band. Her and Luke would huddle over the piano, scribbling the night away, always sitting dangerously close to each other.
Once, Reggie observes them quietly from the couch with an unreadable expression on bis face.
“We are careful,”
Bobby raises an eyebrow at him, “Really? You tried to pass off the hickeys on Julie’s neck as rashes.”
“And Reggie bought it, remember? He went out and got ointment for her and everything,”
“He’s not stupid, Luke. You better do something about this. Fast,”
Luke sighs, “You’re right.”
Later that night, Luke pulls Julie into the upstairs bathroom, the one between her room and Reggie’s, to talk.
“Jules, as much I want to keep doing this... I can’t stand lying to Reggie,”
“Me too,” she says, “So, let’s just tell him. I don’t like hiding you.”
“But we need to plan it out. We can’t just spring it on him,”
“Catch him in a good mood hopefully, and we’ll tell him together,”
“Sounds like a plan, boss,”
“Love it when you call me boss,” Julie smiles, angling her head up to kiss him.
Just then, the door connecting to Reggie’s room bursts open and the said bassist enters in his bathrobe. His eyes grow wide at the sight of them tangled up in each other.
“What is going on here?”
The couple breaks apart. Julie and Luke jump to opposite sides of the bathroom, hands up in surrender.
“You didn’t lock the doors?” Julie hisses at Luke
“Was not my main priority!” Then Luke steps forward in an attempt to calm Reggie down, “Hey, Reg, pal, um, what you just saw-”
“You guys were kissing in here?” he yells.
Julie and Luke lower their heads, “...yeah,”
Reggie sighs, throwing his hands up in the air, “Unbelievable!”
“Reggie, we’re sorry-”
“In the bathroom, really? Can’t you guys do this in the laundry room like you usually do? My toothbrush is here, come on!”
Wait. What?
Did they hear him correctly?
“You knew?!” Julie all but screamed at her brother.
“Duh. You’re not really subtle,”
Luke splutters, “B-But Nick-”
“Found out real quick that he’s not the one I should be worried about,”
“And the... the, well..?” Julie gestures lamely at her neck, “Why did you get me ointment?”
Reggie smirks, “Just to mess with you.”
“So... you’re not mad?”
“Nah. Like I said. I need to make sure whatever guy you end up with, Jules, is good enough for you. And, well, I’ve known Luke almost all my life. And I trust him. Honestly, there’s no other guy I could think of that could be a better match for you.”
Luke’s hand rests on his shoulder, “You mean that, Reg?”
“Of course. I’m happy for you guys. But uh...” he sticks his thumb towards the door, “Could you like skip on out of here. I did come to the bathroom for a reason.”
“Oh, right,”
“Your Tia’s chicken went right through me-”
“Ok, Reggie! We’re leaving!”
“But one more thing,”
Luke and Julie stop in the doorway leading to the hallway.
“If you think I’m bad,” Reggie shakes his head, “Try breaking the news to Carlos,”
Luke pales, “Oh no,”
“’Oh no’ is right,”
The couple spins around to find Carlos in the hallway, arms crossed, staring them down, “Care to explain why you two were in the bathroom?”
“Well, uh, um, we were-” Luke turns to Julie, but the girl is nowhere to be found, having already yeeted to her room to escape an overprotective Carlos.
Luke throws a pleading look at Reggie, “A little help here, buddy?”
Meanwhile, Carlos is unamused, carrying so much tension in his small body that it has Luke gulping nervously.
“Nope you’re on your own,” he winks, “Make sure to tell him about the ‘rash’ while you’re at it.”
And with a laugh, the bathroom door closes.
“I can explain...”

Chapter 19
chapter list / previous / next
Tallpaw was crouched low in the long grass of the pastures. He wasn’t searching for any prey, instead he was just sitting alone in the empty fields, looking in the direction of the twoleg barn. It had only been a couple days since his disastrous attempt at tunneling, and his father had been making a point of avoiding him, giving him nothing more than a distant glare. By now, everyone in camp had heard about the incident. He didn’t know what Heatherstar had to say about it yet, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to. No one brought it up but he always felt like they were watching him with pity, or worse, scorn. Tallpaw hadn’t been able to focus at all, and had slipped away from team hunting training with Shrewpaw after he’d missed his third catch. Shrewpaw had gotten fed up with him and growled in frustration “Just forget it, I’ll just catch something myself and say we caught it together!”
He felt terrible. He had no idea how to make the cats he cared about happy. Dawnstripe wanted him to focus on moor training, Sandstone wanted him to become a prodigy tunneler, he had no idea what his mother wanted at all.
He wasn’t sure he felt worthy to train as anything anymore, he wanted to curl up under a gorse bush and stay there, not have to ask any cat for anything ever again and have no cat ask anything of him. It was a cowardly wish. And it wasn't like him to desire hiding in the undergrowth. Maybe that was why he had found himself walking towards the northern treeline, and why he now crouched at the outskirts of the farm, the woodland strip behind him blocking the breeze. He hadn’t consciously intended to come this way, but this is where he was. Just somewhere far away where he couldn’t disappoint anyone, where the wind wouldn’t catch his scent and invite anyone to come after him.
Tallpaw shouldn’t be in the pastures, he kept telling himself that, but some part of him was so desperate for some respite from the anxious buzzing in every part of his body, he was willing to try anything. His tail flicked restlessly. I don’t even know where Jake is, this was a mouse-brained idea. But before he could get up and leave, a bright orange shock of fur bounced out of the grass, making Tallpaw jump.
“Tallpaw!” Jake cried, “You’re back already! I didn’t think you’d come out this far again. I saw your tail in the grass and knew it had to be you. I was practicing my stalking, did you hear me coming?”
Jake looked so happy to see him. Tallpaw managed to get out a purr, “I didn’t. You’re a fast learner.”
It certainly wasn’t a lie, but mostly because Tallpaw had been too busy arguing with himself to pay any attention to a kittypet sneaking up on him.
Jake studied him, his eyes narrowed in slight concern “You doin’ ok? You seem a little down.”
“I’m fine,” Tallpaw lied. It didn’t sound convincing even to himself. The last thing he wanted to do was confess what a mouse-hearted stunt he’d pulled before when he went into the tunnels, especially not when Jake had tried so hard to encourage him before.
“I won’t make you spit it out. I’m sure it’s nothing you can’t handle.” Jake said politely.
Tallpaw hummed quietly but he avoided Jake’s gaze “I really just wanted to make sure you were doing ok. How are you?”
Jake seemed happy enough to oblige Tallpaw’s push for a change of subject. He told him how he caught a tiny mouse after a kestrel dropped it, and was practicing swatting at birds, and how his twolegs had been extra nice to him that day. Tallpaw still had some doubts about that last part, but he wasn’t going to interject about it today. Although Jake didn’t mention the obvious tension Tallpaw held in his body again, there was more understanding in his deep green eyes then Tallpaw would have expected. He had thought of Jake as a bit of a flighty cat who didn’t pick up on emotional cues very often, but he got the feeling the kittypet was perhaps a lot more perceptive than Tallpaw had been giving him credit for. Maybe his friendly nature wasn’t a result of naivety, maybe he was just… like that by choice. He was just nice. Why was that surprising? He smiled softly to himself as Jake talked.
“You know,” Jake said, “I’ve been getting a feeling lately that somethings going to change for me soon.”
“What do you mean?”
“I can’t explain it. I just feel it in my gut. I finally met some of those nicer cats you mentioned, Reena and Bess. I thought about what it would be like to travel the way they do, it sounds so fascinating. ”
“Are you...considering it? Leaving with the visitors?” Tallpaw wasn’t sure he could picture it. Though he had to admit Jake and Reena had a similar friendly disposition.
Jake shrugged. “Oh I don’t know about that, they seem nice but I barely know them. I’ve never been a stray before. I think I would miss my housefolk too much, you know? It upsets them when I disappear. They’ve been acting strange lately, moving stuff out of their den for days. I have a feeling they're getting ready to leave, and I think I may go with them.”
“I-I don’t think that’s a good idea. Don’t you like it here? You can’t just let them take you! You don’t even know where they’re going to go!” Tallpaw said more quickly than he intended.
Jake flicked his tail casually. “Yeah I know, but I’m not that worried. The rest of my family went their separate ways like this, and honestly I never imagined I’d stay here my whole life. Just staying put in the same place? I always wanted to see somewhere new. I guess I’m just going to see where life takes me”
Jake seemed so chipper at the idea, but Tallpaw was surprised at how sad he suddenly felt at the idea of the kittypet leaving. He shouldn’t be here, he knew that, but...it was nice to have something to himself. He didn’t want to be alone with his thoughts. Tallpaw didn’t think about how stressed out he was in camp when he went to see Jake. He didn’t want to lose this, as selfish as it was. Well, he thought. My father wasn’t really wrong, was he? I’d rather do anything to run away from hardships. Of course this is where I’d end up.
“Well...good luck.” Tallpaw said quietly, “I should get going. Maybe it’s for the best. I’m breaking the rules coming here so often.” He turned very abruptly to leave, painfully aware it was probably rude.
“Oh! well...I’ll see you Tallpaw!” Jake called with some uncertainty.
Tallpaw wasn’t sure that he would, and felt a hollow pang in his chest at the thought. But he shouldn’t have run off and left Shrewpaw to do the assignment alone. But when he got back to the moor, instead of Shrewpaw, he was surprised to see Reena and Sparrow padding along the treeline. Tallpaw’s first instinct was to worry, but he remembered Sparrow apparently already knew he visited Jake sometimes. Reena waved her tail when she caught sight of him. She smiled in a friendly way, but the rest of her betrayed her worry. Sparrow wasn’t even looking at him. He kept staring down at his paws.
“Hello Tallpaw,” Reena said. “Have you seen Hen or Mole? They suddenly aren’t in camp and no one is sure where they’ve gone.”
“Hen? Not recently...I think I saw her just outside camp when I left early this morning.”
“Well she’s not here, so we should look somewhere else,” Sparrow hissed, already padding away.
Reena dipped her head to Tallpaw apologetically. “Well...if you see her or Mole...please tell them to return to your camp. Hen hasn’t been doing well, we’re worried about her.” With that, she turned and hurried after her companion.
***
Shrewpaw was waiting for him with a small rabbit and a disgruntled glare as Tallpaw tried not to look guilty. He was hoping he’d find the other apprentice soon enough to still be able to help.
Shrewpaw just gave an irritated flick of his tail. "Whatever. This gets us back to camp faster. I’m tired. You can owe me for it later.”
On the way back, Tallpaw scented the air carefully and kept his ears pricked for any sign of Hen. Such a frail old cat surely could not have gotten far alone, but he still didn’t see any sign of her or Mole. Hopefully they hadn’t gotten lost.
A very tired looking Briarpaw was the first cat to catch them.
“Hey Briarpaw,” Tallpaw called. “You haven’t seen Hen around have you? Reena said that she’s wandered off.”
Briarpaw looked grim. “I’m afraid we have.”
Tallpaw expected the worst judging by the look on his friends face, and his suspicions were quickly confirmed.
“She wanted to go on a walk with Mole. Apparently she needed to stop and rest while out on the moor, and she just...didn’t wake up again. Some of the warriors found Mole laying with her and had to carry her back. Hawkheart tells me she was already passed before they got her to camp. We’re not sure what the visitors will want done.”
Sure enough, when they walked into camp, there lay the still white shape of Hen, with Mole pressed close to her side. Tallpaw was a bit stunned. He had never actually seen a dead cat before. She had been alive just before he left, and had even spoken to him not long before that. And now here she lay, her fur messy and tangled with bits of thistle that Mole was attempting to lick out of her fur. Tallpaw felt a twinge of guilt then.
“She had to have gone at almost the same time as me…” He murmured to himself. “I was so distracted when I left to catch up with Shrewpaw. Perhaps if I’d paid more attention...They shouldn’t have been allowed to go walking around.”
Briarpaw pressed his nose to his shoulder softly. “A walk on the moor isn’t what killed her, her sickness was one beyond our powers to cure. She died with her mate at least. Cloudrunner and Brackenwing have gone out to find the rest of their friends.”
Tallpaw nodded solemnly, but he still felt bad. The visitors were so lively and kind--most of them anyway. He really had hoped they would be able to help.
Bess and Algernon returned shortly, approaching Mole with their heads bowed as they both in turn pressed their noses to their old companions' bodies. The clan stood back in quiet hesitation. There wasn’t a ceremony to perform for cats who weren’t clanmates, but no one wanted to step forward to offer condolences yet either, so they were silent. Do Sparrow and Reena know yet? Tallpaw thought. Sparrow had seemed so sure Hen would get better soon. However prickly and unapproachable the little loner could be, Tallpaw wouldn’t have wished this on him, or any cat. He didn’t envy whoever had to break the news to him. Who knew how he would react?
Unfortunately, they didn’t have to wait long to find out. Mole hadn’t moved from Hen’s side until he heard the two young cats’ return. Sparrow stood rigid at the top of the shallow slope leading into camp and Mole began to limp over to him, standing in front of him as if he wanted to block his view. Tallpaw was too far away to read Sparrow’s expression or make out Mole’s hushed words until eventually he heard Sparrow raise his voice, tight as he fought to keep it steady.
“Then why did we even come here!?” he snarled, “we only went so far out of the way because they were supposed to help us, and most of them didn’t even want to!”
Sparrow’s sharp gaze snapped towards Hawkheart and Briarpaw, who sat some distance away from the body of Hen. Hawkheart didn’t give much away but he narrowed his eyes at Sparrow’s accusing glare
“She didn’t get better at all! If anything she got worse, did they even try? They just wanted us to leave, the quicker she was gone, the quicker we were gone. Is that it?”
Tallpaw was afraid Hawkheart would turn on the little cat at the accusation, but he didn’t even ruffle his fur. “My orders were to treat her to the best of my ability, so that is what I did. My feelings played no part in it. There was a sickness forming from the mass inside her. It was already taking her life when she arrived here. All the herbs and remedies StarClan has gifted us could not remove what was already set fast.”
“Then why was it so fast?” Sparrow looked back at Mole. “She was alright not more than two moons ago, and she could still walk when we got here, why didn’t we have more time at least if their healers were good for anything?”
“Sparrow, please,” Bess’s voice was firm, but raspy in barely concealed grief. “This isn’t what Hen would want at her place of passing. It was her time.”
“I don’t want her to be here. She shouldn’t be here.” Sparrow's eyes darted around to the staring strangers surrounding him. He looked like he wanted to spit more insults but couldn't find the words for them as he dug his trembling claws into the soil. Mole stepped closer, but Sparrow backed away and was gone back through the entrance in a heartbeat.
Reena insisted on going after him to make sure he was ok, although Tallpaw couldn’t help suspecting he'd want to be alone, away from prying eyes idly observing his pain. It was hard to blame him for that.
Heatherstar eventually approached the small group and offered to keep vigil for her in the camp.
“Thank you for your kindness, Heatherstar,” Bess said quietly, “but we will find our own place. Wherever we bury her for her final sleep must be carefully chosen, and it can’t be here.”
They took several moments to rest before they attempted to carry her. Tallpaw spent a long while watching them silently grieve in their own way. Hen looked a bit like she was sleeping on her side, if it were not for the stiffness in her limbs, all the more noticeable when the visitors lifted her body between Algernon and Bess and slowly made their way out of camp. That unnerving scent he had smelled on her earlier came to him again. Unmistakably he knew it was the scent of death. Where would a cat go if they did not know their way to StarClan? Where was Hen now? Was she anywhere?
Tallpaw couldn't help the curiosity to look over the ridge around camp to see where the visitors were taking their friend. They were out of sight, but he did see Reena not too far off, looking around with her tail and ears drooping. Tallpaw felt an urge to approach her, but he wasn’t sure it was a good idea. She caught his gaze and offered a small friendly blink that he took as a sign it was alright to come closer.
Tallpaw dipped his head. “I’m... really sorry about Hen. I’m sorry we couldn’t help.” It didn’t really feel like much, but it was the best he could think to offer.
“I believe that you all did what you could. I’m just glad she was with Mole at the end…" she said.
“Did you find Sparrow?”
Reena let out a small sigh “No. I suspect I won’t. He is good at not being found when he doesn’t wish to be. I’m terribly sorry for his outburst, he’s really a good cat deep down, but...this will hurt for some time. He'll find us himself when he’s ready. We won’t lay her body to rest until he does. Now that we have no reason to hurry, we will probably travel back south to the housefolk town for the cold seasons, give ourselves time to recover. We have friends there that will make finding shelter and safety easier.”
“Will you continue on your travels as you did before?” Tallpaw asked meekly. He didn’t have time to wonder if that was inappropriate to ask after he’d said it. He wasn’t sure the right way to navigate around this topic.
To his relief, Reena gave him a small smile. “We will, eventually. There was only one thing Hen ever asked of us, and that was for us to continue telling her stories after she was gone. It all started because of her, and she wanted nothing more than for it to outlive her. You know, I really am grateful we got to perform that story to you all. It was one of her favorites. So...Thank you for giving us a chance to tell it with her one last time.”
Tallpaw walked along with her for a short ways. He hadn’t planned on it, but it felt like the right thing to do as Reena spoke.
“I think we all knew Hen’s time with us was running short, even if we didn’t want to admit it. We hoped we’d be able to get her to the sea first.” Reena trailed off with a little sigh. “She was so excited to take Sparrow there. This would have been his first time. She was so much happier when we found him as a kit. Those two were closer than anything...We’re confident she will still travel with us, and we’ll guide her spirit home to the sea come next newleaf. She always believed we all end up where we are meant to be sooner or later, in this world or the next.” She paused, looking ahead to the far woods. “I should join my family now. I hope your clanmates will forgive us being a bit distant for a little while after all your hospitality...Thank you for walking with me.”
Reena touched his nose briefly and padded away. Tallpaw could only wish the strange cats well. Even when he couldn’t see them anymore, the image of Hen’s body unnerved him and lodged in his mind like a burr.
He had a memory that was perhaps not quite real before this moment, of a still body no bigger than a mouse lying close at his side, stiff and covered in that distinct scent of death. Death shouldn’t unsettle him as much as it did, but it made him feel terribly lonely. He wished he took comfort in the ghosts that Reena’s family believed in. To him, StarClan still felt so quiet and far away, if anything more of a stern distant force staring over his shoulder to judge whether or not he was behaving as a worthy descendant of his clan. Ultimately, this sadness wasn’t meant for him. He wasn’t a visitor, and he could not afford to dwell on grief like them. Not for cats, or kits, he never really knew.
The life of a warrior meant living alongside death closely, an unforgiving force that could strike the life from a cat that he’d known and walked with just days before. He knew it was something he should accept, and feel no fear towards. But Tallpaw still hoped in vain that he would not have to meet it again.

What Makes a Family? Pt6
AO3 Beginning Previous Next
Marinette studied her family, old and new. Her parents were obviously still worried about Alfred influencing her but that was a fear she’d have to break with time. Luka and Kagami trusted her judgement and she trusted them not to overreact. Her new Grandfather seemed content rolling with the punches and staying in her comfort zone. Chloe… well she was still glaring at Alfred. The girl had adopted a ridiculously overprotective big sister persona once she and Marinette had made peace. Most of the time it was endearing but right now it wasn’t likely to help.
“Grandpa Alfie, would you like to see my garden?” Alfred blinked at her and she had to hide a smile. It was obvious the man was used to being prepared and it was fun surprising him. Before he could answer, her mother jumped in.
“Sweetheart, do you really think that’s a good idea?” There was a warning in her tone and Marinette fought not to sigh.
“Maman, everything will be fine. We’ll still be in the house and I’m not going anywhere, I promise.” It was obvious the man would be more willing to talk to her alone and while she had no intention of changing her life, she did want to hear what he had to say. If her birth father really did want a relationship with her, the least she could do was listen and get all the information she could before making a decision. Her parents still looked less than thrilled. “This is something I need to do, and I’d really like your support.”
“Oh, Mari, of course.” Both her parents tripped over themselves to assure her that they’d always support her decisions. It was a little bit of a dirty trick on her part, but it was the quickest way out of the argument. Alfred was studying her again and she had a feeling he knew exactly what she’d done.
“Do you want any of us to come with you?” Kagami’s tone was bordering on hostile so Marinette shook her head. None of them were calm enough except Luka, but she had a feeling she’d get a lot more information if she was alone with the man anyway.
“Well, he hasn’t even said yes yet, but I think he’d prefer to talk to me alone.” No one seemed happy about it but they all did eventually nod.
“I’d love to see your garden Miss Marinette.” She gave the man a full wattage smile and noticed the suspicion in his eyes. This should be interesting.
“Wonderful, follow me.” She led Alfred up to her room and out to her balcony before anyone could protest further. While she was proud of her herbs and flowers, she knew they both had other reasons for being up here. After taking a deep breath to calm herself she turned to her new Grandfather. “You have concerns.” Best to rip the bandaid off.
“A few Miss.” He seemed surprised that she’d noticed. She was still just annoyed that he insisted on calling her Miss. She was going to break that habit if it was the last thing she did. “The way I’ve seen you interact with people so far is a bit alarming. Not to mention the… devotion they have for you.” Marinette blew out a frustrated sigh. Him being so observant was going to be a challenge.
“How much do you know about the situation here in Paris?” His confused frown was not what she’d been expecting. Great.
“I’m afraid I don’t know what exactly you’re referring to Miss.” She knew that the world at large wasn’t aware of anything strange in Paris, but she’d thought someone with a worldwide business would have at least caught wind of it. Apparently she underestimated the Miraculous magic.
“Please Grandpa Alfie, at least drop the Miss and just call me Marinette. And please sit. I have a feeling this is going to be a very long conversation.” He remained silent, but he did sit. Where did she even start? “I’m sure this will come as a bit of a shock, and I’m sure you’ll want to verify it yourself, but Paris is being terrorized by a madman with a magical artifact. Has been for four years actually.”
“That is not possible.” She could tell the words were more instinctual than anything else. He composed himself quickly though. “My apologies, but I can’t see how we wouldn’t have heard of it if that were the case.” Honestly, she didn’t either. The Kwami had tried to explain it to her, multiple times. Something about restored timelines and only those affected really being able to focus on it long enough to know it was real in the first place. It just gave her a headache and she still didn’t really understand.
“As I said, the villain and the heroes are using magic. Some part of the magic is somehow stopping the information from making it out of Paris. No one really understands it, but it’s the truth. As I said, I’m sure you’ll want to verify it but in order to do so you’ll most likely have to go through an attack yourself to lift the haze.” That’s what people had started calling it, stupid name though it was. The further away from Paris you got, the more hazy your memory of the attacks, and until you’d actually experienced it yourself any news footage seemed to be pure fiction. It was good and bad. Alfred was still frowning at her with disbelief all over his face.
“Even if that’s true, I’m not sure how it’s relevant Miss.” She crossed her arms and glowered at him, waiting. It was a tense silence for a few minutes until he finally sighed. “You are definitely your father’s daughter. I still don’t see how this is relevant, Marinette.” She just grinned at him.
“Well you pointed out the devotion my friends and parents have for me. We’ve basically been living in a warzone for four years. While Ladybug’s cure fixes physical damage and reverses death, we’ve all been heavily traumatized. What you’ve noticed in our behavior is likely due to that trauma and the fact that in order not to be taken over by Hawkmoth we have to carefully regulate our emotions.”
“What do you mean taken over?” It was so strange having to explain this to someone. The real question was how much detail could she go into without making it obvious she knew more than she should. She sat across from him and tried to find the easiest way to make things make sense to him.
“Okay, so the heroes and villains all get their powers from magical artifacts called Miraculous. Each Miraculous has specific powers. Hawkmoth, the main villain, is able to send out corrupted butterflies called Akumas to give powers to others and basically take them over. He does this by taking advantage of people’s negative emotions. The victims don’t remember anything once Ladybug has purified the Akuma and it’s not their fault. All the people you met downstairs have been Akumatized at least once. They rely heavily on me and each other to keep their negative emotions to a minimum so it doesn’t happen again.”
“They’ve all been Akumatized, but you haven’t?” She honestly hadn’t expected him to catch that, but she probably should have. She gave a single nod in response. “Why do you think that is?” She shot him a look that said she knew what he was doing, but she answered anyway.
“I’ve always been a fairly positive and upbeat person. Yes, I do tend to be a bit dramatic at times, but it doesn’t usually last long enough to attract an Akuma. I have had a couple close calls but I was lucky enough to see it coming in time to focus on the good things in my life.”
“Such as?” He was testing her. She wondered if there was more to it than simply trying to assess how she was likely to take advantage of this new found connection, but she had a feeling she’d find out soon enough.
“Well, my friends and family for starters. You saw how much they love me. They’re all fiercely protective and will always have my back. If that’s not something to be happy about, I don’t know what is.” His look softened considerably and she felt like she’d passed some sort of test.
“Yes Marinette, that is certainly a good reason to be happy.” Progress! She didn’t even have to prompt him to use her name that time.

Ooh! If asks are open, can I ask you for a mermaid reader x dorm leaders+ octanivelle? Like, its canon that the mc is from another world, so what if she is a mermaid from a world where magic barely exists? Like, she can freely turn human at will but that's about it. Assuming that everyone has a crush on her, but hasn't confessed, how would they react to the reveal?
hello hello ! asks are usually open since i don’t have request limits and i write down all the ones i wanna do in my notebooks (or save them as drafts)ヾ(@^∇^@)ノ i get this strange sense of happiness when writing them all down with their categories and specific highlights. i hope you enjoy ! unrelated but someone said that lilia was like rei sakuma and hshshsh ive pulled out all my undead albums and started jamming to all the songs again,, call name, call name, we are undead!
📝to note: (1) i couldn’t write anything about vil ˚‧º·(˚ ˃̣̣̥⌓˂̣̣̥ )‧º·˚ (2) length (and possibly comprehensibility) varies because i ran out of coffee at home and was half-asleep for most of these.
riddle rosehearts
Riddle had been reluctant to even participate in today’s swimming lesson but begrudgingly put on his attire and stood at the edge of the pool, glaring at the water as if it were an old enemy. It wasn’t a total loss, you were there-- nervously fidgeting beside him. He’s been crushing on you hard, to the point that his ears turn red and his stomach flutters with butterflies just with your presence.
From the corner of his eyes, he could see you anxiously eyeing the pool. “Are you feeling alright?” he asks you, voice laced with worry. Your reply came out garbled, like you were trying to say something but somehow forgotten how to speak. He leaves you alone then but would occasionally glance at you, concerned.
When it was time for you to showcase your swimming capabilities, all the worry Riddle had for you simply washed away the instant your legs transformed into a mermaid’s tail fin.
He tries to be nonchalant about it but couldn’t help gawking at you as you did your laps. When you finish and settle to prop yourself up on the edge of the pool in front of him, you catch him staring at you. “It’s strange, isn’t it,” you say, sheepishly smiling to yourself as you collect your wet hair into your hands then wring all the water out of the strands.
“N-No!” he shakes his head with raised hands. “You don’t look strange at all, if anything you’re probably the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen-!” he blurts out, before bringing his hands up to silence his traitorous mouth. You stare at him with wide eyes. “O-Oh, I-,” you fumbled for words as your cheeks tinge red like blooming roses. “I see.”
After that, a silence settles itself in the air, rendering the two of you into amiable discomfiture.
“Rosehearts, it’s your turn!”
Ashton’s booming voice makes you both jolt, ruining the moment. Reluctantly, he smiles at you and heads off.
leona kingscholar
You always had a weird fishy smell to you.
At first, he thought nothing of this and continued to hang around you from time to time. “You know what her scent reminds me of?” Ruggie had told him once while handing him a sandwich from the cafeteria. “She kind of smells like the Leech brothers.”
“What do you mean?”
Ruggie scratches the back of his head. “They’ve got that sea smell to them, you know? Like how most merfolk do.”
Since that day, he’s been trying to find out why you smelled that way. You were magicless so he wasn’t about to jump into conclusions but after doing a little digging and investigating on it for weeks, all evidence pointed to one thing. He didn’t want to pry anything out of you so he kept his mouth shut until the day you revealed it to him.
It was during PE class. You had told Leona that you wanted to tell him something before going over to the school’s swimming pool. He had played it cool and quietly waited on you to say what you wanted to tell him.
“Leona, I’m actually a mermaid,” you say with downcast eyes while twiddling your thumbs.
“Yeah, I know.”
“I know it’s hard to believe but— wait what? You know? How?”
The surprised look on your face makes him chuckle. He gives you a moment to take it all in before going into full detail on how he found out; “You honestly reek of fish.”
azul ashengrotto
Azul thought he knew everything that there is to you. From your hobbies to your favourite music genre to your secret comfort place inside Night Raven College. You happily indulged all of his impudent questions. Yes, you preferred ice cream over cake. Yes, you were losing sleep because of Grim’s snoring. No, you don’t hate him and never thought any less of him after his overblot episode.
He liked your transparency-- admired it even. Around you, he felt like he was underwater but instead of having the constant sense of dread, he was at ease in the waters of your presence. There was never any need to worry over being judged.
Now when you had asked him to show you around his hometown and he had told you to wear something casual, he hadn’t exactly expected you to show up as a mermaid. You were so stunning that he lost his composure just from the sight of you.
“Did you-,” he clears his voice, “Did you drink a potion?”
Laughing, you reply, “No, this is what I really am.”
What you really were. Azul shamelessly examined you for a while as he took you to see boutiques and cafes, envious of your tail’s pale rounded scales and stylish web-like dorsal fins but all the while swooning over how breathtakingly beautiful you looked. When you had asked him if he was comfortable enough to change forms, he lets out a nervous laugh then hides his flustered face.
“I’d rather not embarrass you.”
floyd leech
Floyd had always found you interesting, it’s why he liked to keep close to you.
Whenever you were around, his heart would thump so fast in his chest that he’d grin and run up to you. “Little shrimp~!” was his usual greeting, his voice jingly as he takes you into his arms. He’d never tell you but he liked having you in his arms, as much as it terrified you to even be enveloped in them.
“That’s what you do when you hunt down people!” you complained, “I’m never sure if you’d just like to greet me or if I’ve done something wrong every time I see you.”
“Ah~ That’s the fun in it though!” he said, flashing his sharp teeth at you.
When you transformed in front of him, his eyes widened in delighted surprise. He takes your mermaid form in, ooh-ing and aah-ing at “-how pretty you looked!” before taking you around Octavinelle’s waters and making you participate in make-up competitions just so that he could get to see how fast you swam or strong you were.
jade leech
Jade always had his suspicions.
He wasn’t sure when it started but subconsciously he kept note of the things you did and said before coming into the realization that you have become someone very dear to him. You always spoke about the sea with a fondness that made it seem as if it were your home and frequently asked him to tag along with you to swim around and explore his dorm despite having already done so before. When you had asked him to wait then transformed in front of him before taking him out around Octavinelle, he couldn’t help but feel comforted at the fact that you trusted him enough to reveal this long held secret.
“You’re not mad?” you asked him, shyly peering at him from behind a bed of seaweed. He gives you his signature Jade Leech smile, one that made it seem like he was laughing at your very notion and finding you amusingly silly.
“No, not all,” he says, his eyes crinkling, “in fact, I feel very honored that you’ve told me.”
kalim al-asim
Kalim grew up in the land of Hot Sands where, instead of water, the waves were made of gold shimmering grains and that “swimming” in it would leave you parched and drenched in sweat (he would know, he learned that the hard way!). Now swimming always brought a smile to his face. Partying in pools and sharing laughs with your friends, those were certainly fun!
Though today’s visit to the pool was more of an academic requirement than a time for leisure, Kalim still beamed brighter than any star because he was taking his PE swimming class with the light of his heart: you!
Like a toddler, he swung his feet over the edge of the pool and dipped them into the water beside you. “Aaahhh~ Today’s going to be a really great day!” he twitters on, making you chuckle at his childlike enthusiasm. “Really? Why’s that?” you ask him, sinking your own two legs into the pool and looking at him intently. Kalim, suddenly growing self conscious because of your gaze, looks away and rubs the back of his neck. “Well-” he starts, letting his confidence ease back into him as he meets your eyes, “because I’ll be swimming with you!”
You blink at his words. For a second, you stare at him in surprise but his smile gets to you and makes you laugh. “Yeah, it does feel kinda great.”
When Ashton calls you up to the platform, Kalim positions himself at the other end of the pool and cheers you on. “Go Y/N! Go~!”
Ashton’s whistle blows a second later, making you jump. Kalim eyes widen as he watches you transform mid-air before plunging into the pool. When you surfaced, his heart was sent into a frenzy. Your hair and scales twinkled and your eyes, bright and demure-- you looked like a goddess, emerging from the sea to claim his soul.
The second you change back and dried off, he pops up beside you with gleaming eyes and bombards you with countless praises and questions: “You looked so cool!” “Can you control your shift?” “Your scales were such a pretty bright colour!” “Do you think we can go to sea adventures together?”
idia shroud
Idia didn’t really want to be here.
The only reason he was was because his brother insisted on it and managed to drag him to class before he could properly lock the door. If he knew that PE today was going to be a swimming class, he would’ve persisted to not come at all.
“Ah, this sucks,”Idia mutters under his breath as thoughts of what could have happened if he weren’t here swarmed his mind, feeding into his growing bitterness. Clicking his tongue, he folds his legs into his chest and frowns into his knees then stares at the clear shimmering surface of the pool water.
“What sucks?”
Idia jolts at the sound of your voice in his ear. He moves his head a fraction to the right and somehow almost kisses you with how close your face was to his. Instead your noses touch, surprising you both. “Y-Y-N?” your name sputters out of his lips as his face flushes at the sight of your smile. He squirms to get away from you but only manages to get a few breaths in before slipping.
As he lays on the ground, feeling completely defeated, he brings a forearm over to cover his eyes from the sun’s mocking glare. Ah, the gods are so cruel.
“Idia, are you okay?”
“Aghhhhhhhhhh...”
You helped him up and, though he kept his head low while quietly cursing the gods, he seemed okay. Idia knew you wanted to stay with him out of kindness but when Ashton signaled your group to the platforms, you gave him a small smile and reluctantly headed over to the other end of the pool.
Without you near him anymore, Idia found the strength to breathe again. Quietly, he makes his way over to a secluded corner to rest while keeping his eyes trained on you in the distance. He watches as your complexion changes and thin colourful appendages grow out of your arms and intertwined legs. Along with the heated gaze of the sun, all the shimmering lights that bounced off your scales and illuminated the tiles into a frenzy of dancing colours dizzied him to the point of passing out. As he slips into the depths of his consciousness, a thought echoes in his mind that was far too overwhelming for him to even continue to think about.
My crush is a mermaid.
malleus draconia
You and “Tsuno tarou” were running away from a couple of students that he claims to be after him and somehow managed to to end up hiding behind a rock formation in the outskirts of the Octavinelle dorm. He had used some kind of magic of the two of you to prevent drowning and getting wet and though you were impressed by his incredible magic capabilities, you had no time to express your amazement as he quietly drags you away to hide.
“Why on earth are they after you anyways?” you asked Tsuno tarou, who shrugs from behind you. “They like to keep me under close surveillance.” he replies curtly before peering over your shoulder to watch your two chasers bicker and look around the area. You puckered out your lips at his complete lack of explanation, turning to face him with folded arms, “What do you mean by that? Just-,”
“There! I see someone!” one of them exclaims from behind you, causing you to turn back around and catch a pair of blue eyes staring right at you.
You internally groan as the two of them start swimming towards your hiding place. “Well, I suppose there’s no way out of this. It’s a shame that I’ll have to stop seeing you every night,” Tsuno tarou says from behind you, disappointed. Huffing at his gutted attitude, you face him and take hold of his forearm.
“You and I both know that it’d just be the gargoyles you’d miss because you think that the moonlight ‘encapsulates their pulchritude’,” you tell him before taking in a deep breath and closing off all of your thoughts. “You better start talking about all this later, Tsuno tarou.”
He gives you a confused look then opens his mouth as if to tell you something but you look away and concentrate on transforming. When bands of scales erupted to replace the soft surface of your skin and your legs coiled into each other, you pulled on his weight and began swimming away as fast as you could.
To Malleus, you looked mystical. He didn’t know that you were a mermaid but wasn’t all too shocked to see you transform and gracefully dart across the ocean floor with him in tow. “I meant what I said about missing you Y/N,” he says, catching your attention. You let yourself look back at him for a brief moment before averting your gaze from the intensity of his stare; he told you the truth. Your cheeks grow warm despite the coolness of the water.
“Oh…”

Part 3 of P5R review: Akechi
Next up, my favourite part: Akechi! Also mostly likely the last part since I don’t think I missed anything else. Feel free to hit me up though if you’re wondering about anything I haven’t mentioned
Akechi was undoubtedly, and still is, persona 5’s most hotly debated character. From what I’ve been seeing people who even loathed Akechi are starting to become fans of him, or at least don’t hate him anymore. Royal expands on his character in a way that fans of his love because it confirmed so many of their suspicions of what he’s really like but also just adds more depth to him. I could even understand why people who played vanilla only saw him as ‘boy takes things too far cos daddy issues’ cos, well, without deeper analysis that is what atlus was presenting. There was a lot more to his character in vanilla but I don’t blame people not looking into him because what they saw on the surface didn’t interest them enough... though that being said the abuse and torment given to his fans was super uncalled for.
Let’s start with his confidant and take it from there- it’s special, it’s fun, it’s emotional and it’s so layered I could watch it a million times and I’d probably still miss something from it. It’s special because it’s the only confidant where Ren just gets to hang out with someone, with nothing expected in return. All Akechi wants is a conversation and to play billiards with him. All of the other confidants want your help in something, want you to solve their issues without any regard for what they could do for you in return. Of course when Ren’s in jail they help him out then but it’s only when he’s facing the worst-case scenario. Interestingly enough, Akechi goes to jail for Ren at the first opportunity he gets and in that world none of your confidants ever return the favour of Ren changing their lives. To nail this point further, his confidant does have some requirements for social stats, but it’s the only instance where it’s made clear that it’s for Ren’s own comfort, not for someone else’s. Akechi says he needs someone charming and knowledgeable because he’s genuinely concerned for the abuse Ren might get if his fans didn’t consider him worthy of their idol’s presence.
It’s unexpectedly fun too, you’d think that an Akechi confidant would be just about rivalry or him talking to you about his Tragic Backstory but you get quite a few moments which are just… fun. The first one has them playing billiards and uncovering that he’s ambidextrous, and while it is a set up for their rivalry it’s still just them playing billiards like regular teenagers would. There’s the café date where silliness ensues and funnily enough you end up finding out more about Ren in that interaction than you do Akechi; about how Ren too hides from the public and has his own mask (glasses) that help him cover up who he really is.
But of course, it’s also emotional, like the bathhouse scene where you finally get to know more about Akechi’s past that’s not just a random info dump, there’s him clearly crying for help in the final billiards rank where he talks about the game as if it were his own life and even asks you if you’d help him (even though he doesn’t let you help regardless of what you say).
Term 3 Akechi… well he’s everything I hoped he would be. Sarcastic, sardonic and all around Done With This Shit. He never holds back anymore, both on the battlefield and real life and he doesn’t care what the Thieves or anyone else thinks of him anymore. He’s done with the detective mask and the charade and can finally be himself for once, and I absolutely love it. He’s gone from a character I can only theorise about being rude in my writing to one who’s everything I hoped for and so much more.
Now to the shuake stuff: Oh my god its so gay.
Yes a lot of it is regular friendship stuff but also if you can’t be friends with your boyfriend then that’s just casual sex, not a relationship. And I’m not talking about the bathhouse scene. Actually, what’s interesting is what happens after which is when Akechi specifically says that no ones ever seen that part of him, Ren’s the only person who he’s been able to open up to like that. There’s the jazz club, which you find out later is a special place for Akechi to the point that the owner says he’s never brought anyone else there. Ren is clearly special in Akechi’s eyes, he’s the one person he can be around and be his true self.
You even see it in term 3 when he’s sarcastic and sardonic around Ren but still continues to put up a façade around human Morgana, Futaba, Sojiro Wakaba and later Kasumi, at least until they see him for who he really is inside the palace and he’s forced to show his true self. The writers make that so obvious that Akechi’s face visibly changes when he’s talking to Ren and when he’s talking to everyone else.
And Akechi is equally special to Ren. Ren doesn’t wish for his criminal record to disappear or to be a Phantom Thief again, he wishes to keep the promise he made to Akechi even with the knowledge that the other was going to kill him. We’ve seen him mourn Akechi’s death in p5a proof of justice- the OVA that was so clearly meant to set up royal considering how many similarities it had with that more so than the original game. For a silent protagonist and a self-insert Ren shows more feelings towards Akechi than he does any other character.
Even down to their showtime, everyone else has these elaborate plans that they have to explain to each other then to Ren and hope that the wishing star will make their wish come true and yet Akechi and Ren are just able to improvise it completely on the spot, staying completely in sync. Interestingly enough if you compare it to Joker’s only other one- Sumire’s, she’s leading him into the showtime, she’s the one who has to have him follow her, but with Akechi, he’s equal, they’re in sync, all it takes is Ren shouting ‘Crow!’ for him to jump at the enemy without further instruction. Just as their showtime says, they’re two sides of the same coin.
There’s a reason that somehow, despite never having spoken about Akechi to him, Maruki knows that’s what Ren’s biggest wish would be, he knows that it’s the only way he might be able to stop Ren and the Thieves from infiltrating the palace, and in one alternative, the dream ending, it is enough for him to dangle Akechi’s life in front of him for Ren to fold. He insists Akechi’s life isn’t just something small that he can sacrifice once again.
Our Light is even further proof of it, it’s a love song, not to Kasumi, or not from her, it could clearly not be more obvious that’s it’s from Ren to Akechi. The song describes missing someone who’s gone in such a romantic way that seeing it as Sumire to Kasumi is borderline incestuous, and seeing it as Ren to Sumire or vice versa makes no sense either since they’re just a train ride away and even speak about seeing each other soon. It’s unlikely to be about anyone else either since yeah, Ren can just go and visit them any time and for that to be the ending song of a remake where the only character who’s made more important than he was previously is Akechi. It wouldn’t make sense for the song to be about that one girl out of 10 that you can romance but doesn’t really change the plot as significantly as he does.
In this way, P5R does a great job of showing, not telling. There are frequent comparisons of Maruki and Rumi’s situation to Ren’s and Akechi’s (not direct ones but it’s obvious the two are similar) and if they were a het couple that romance would be unquestionable. At the end of the day, persona is and always will be a game about choice where the protagonist is mostly a self-insert which is why they’ve never been able to outright say ‘this is the canon romance route’ but honestly, if it were to be anyone, it’s so painfully clear it’s Akechi.
Especially when you remember the director’s words of this being a love triangle. We know Sumire has a crush on Ren but doesn’t seem to have an interest in Akechi and outside of being a possible conversation partner, Akechi clearly isn’t interested in Sumire. So then if they’re a love triangle the only logical conclusion is that they’re both vying for Ren’s affection. From Ren’s perspective, the player can choose if he will romance Sumire but regardless of what Ren says to Sumire, he always ends up having Akechi’s life dangled before his eyes and can always choose to have him by his side.
TL;DR Goro Feral, Shuake Canon

I loveeeee the way ur brain works and i like all ur posts and love reading them. Its Jimin day today and i wont lie that i am feeling a bit sad about whole JK not posting on JM bday because he was getting active on Social media again and i thought its because of JM bday coming soon but i hope they are happy and JM had a blast celebrating his bday.. it annoys me how other ship( u know which ship) is happy and making fun about this situation and calling Jikook bond fake and nonexsistant. 1/2
Ahhhhhh this topic!

Also me:
Packing my bags off these shipping streets. Jk don disgrace us. Lol. Kidding. If more than anything today has solidified my faith in JK and Jikook and while y'all are jumping ship imma hold the fort. Hashtag Jikook for life!
I've been receiving a lot of questions about this, about JK not posting for JM's birthday and I haven't answered any of them because- well I passed out. So...
Anywho,
Jk didn't post true, but have you thought about what it would have meant for him and JM if he had posted?
Now I see a lot of people running through the ship streets shouting Jikook broke up, something was off between them, Jikook was never real, jikook this- Jikook that- y'all need to calm your horses or I swear to God!
I mean I am down for all that wild gossip and angst but I think y'all is tripping.
Do I think they are in a bad place, HELL NO. Do I think they are not real? HELL NO! Do I think JK don lost his minds? ABSOLUTELY.
Lol
No but seriously, I'm fascinated by all of this. I'm in pain, can't process shit but when it comes to Jikook I'm always intrigued and fascinated by them.
I'm mostly fascinated by why JK pulled a 5/8, geared up for JM's birthday but then posts crickets on Jimin's birthday as you've said.
Is it me or does this whole thing feel like the tattoo girl scandal all over again? Lmho.
Up until now, I've avoided addressing Asks about Jikook coming out, JK proposing and stuff like that because those territories are a bit tricky for me- to speculate on those, I find I'd have to speculate on whether marriage is something both of Jikook want, whether both of Jikook want to come out but these are conversations I don't think y'all are ready for with me.
Not when I believe one of them, if you've been following my train of thoughts you'd know which, is not ready to make such commitments, joking about marriage and shit- yes, that tiny man. Lol.
I mean the backlash I get for the tamer things I share on here- chilee, y'all is about to eat me up for this. Here goes nothing. Mama pray for me.
I have said, late 2018 to the middle of 2019 is one of the moments I sincerely felt JK was going to 'out' Jikook just based on the way he was moving through that era until that impromptu hiatus and the following scandal.
Out Jikook as in OUT Jikook- I've told y'all Jikook have been asserting themselves against eachother. JK has been asserting himself and part of that self assertion ties in with his sexuality. He is tired of hiding. He's been tired since 2016- trouble this one.
Do I think JM is ready to come out- No. He doesn't want to come out but he doesn't want to hide hide either. Dude just want to stay in that glass closet.
Throughout my posts, I've speculated this has been a huge part of their on and off dynamics since November last year. Jk coming off too strong, JM asking for space- yall know don't make me repeat myself.
November 2019 up until today is also one such periods I felt JK was going to out Jikook, inspite of all the ups and downs they've experienced this season.
JK scares me to be honest with you. I keep saying people are looking at him wrong. Hell, people are looking at Jikook dynamics wrong I feel.
All the times Jikook have almost been accidentally outed, who's been the most terrified? It's not JK.
Jimin's face when RM said JK sneaks into JM's bed at night, his face when they walked into JK's room on Bon V and saw the cameras. I have an entire dissertation on this on my wall please get with it. Lol
Whatever silent protest JK's been on since JM's birthday last year- Not gonna lie, I felt JK was not posting for the others so he could post on JM's birthday this year as a way of coming out with him? You know, make a bold statement like he's done over the years? I'm delusional but also dead serious.
Each time I feel JK's come close to this pivotal moment, something's happened. I swear Jikook is taking years off my life- I'm exhausted.
Why is he trying to out their relationship on his own and not do that with the consent of Jimin? I'm gonna pray to God, y'all can read my mind with everything I have been saying since my posts because this is cutting it too close for me- and I'm exhausted so maybe another post next time.
Like I've said, I really believe they are in a good place this time around. Y'all know me, I don't shy from angst, I'd say if I felt there's been something off with them since they fixed whatever they were going through early half of the year.
The only tension I've sensed between them lately was on day two of the online concert when JM got a little too excited with trying to sell the sexual tension fantasy in his other ships and JK didn't look like he was happy about.
Later during the curtain call you could see dude cold stoning JM resulting in JM doing what he does best in such instances- clinging on to JK for their life. Lol.
He vanished from Namjoon's side real quick to take the bow next to JK but JK- Y'all check that moment out for yourself, see what I'm talking about.
Is that why he didn't wish Jimin a happy birthday? I don't think so. I think he put a lot of thought and preparation towards this moment to make something like this undo all of that- that is if my suspicions about what he was trying to do this year is right.
Jimin gone wake up married one of these days he won't know what hit him! Lmho.
It is why, I don't buy this whole he didn't post for the others which is why he didn't post for Jimin narrative. When have you known Jk to care about things like these?
The man literally got a birthday present for Jimin gave it to him in the presence of some of the members without doing same for them. Singling JM out like this is nothing new to him. He has done so consistently over the years to let this deter him.
The question y'all should be asking is why he didn't post for the others in the first place. They are all friends and posting for eachother's birthdays is a long standing tradition in BTS so why is he breaking from this culture all of a sudden?
Is he rebelling? Is he protesting? What is he trying to do? Right?
This moment has been building up since last year after JM's birthday and I honestly believed he was going to go through with it- hell I bought a wedding dress and shit- Jikook you son of bish!
I have said the company is giving them much room to be themselves, RM isn't breathing down their necks, JM looked like he was finally committed- everything looked great between them in my opinion except perhaps for the growing tensions between JK, V and Namjoon- If you've been paying any attention to their recent Twitter war.
I hate speculating based on nothing, so I'm just going to point out to you my observations without drawing conclusions- I'll share my thoughts on what these moments means when I've had more content to peruse and analyze from now- but for now you can make of it what you will:
1. JK starts a count down on Twitter, JM responds and continues the countdown.
Now I clocked, the moment JK posted this on the 5th that he had something up his sleeves with regards to Jimin which I shared with y'all. He was going for a 5/8/13 it's not news now.
2. After Jimin posts day 4 for the countdown, who ever was going to post after him was going to have to post day 3 to continue the countdown right? But Tae posts a V-cut instead breaking that chain.
Now I remember joking about this moment with a friend, rolling my eyes exclaiming, here they go again! V is trying to sabotage JK yet again, and he'd turn around and ask why their friendship is dwindling. The pettiness and passive aggressiveness of it all!
That moment reminded me of when he called JK out for attempting to eyefuck JM through the viewfinder in the Dynamite MV reaction video. Remember that? Same energy to me.
They do shit like this and their shippers will not take note but will turn around and act surprised when we say Taekook ain't all that- rolling my eyes.
3. Hobi continues the countdown with day 3 and RM posts something random the next day but I think it was to neutralize the Taekook shenanigans. Neutralizing is what RM does best- we been knew.
4. Jk posts his Savage Love cover on the 8th and equally doesn't partake in the countdown he himself initiated because- Savage.
5. Suga posts day 2. RM and Jin posts day 1 and Tae posts D-Day on the D day to promote the concert. Yadda yadda yadda.
Now I didn't think much of this moment to be honest- i merely took a mental note of it for future reference, and was paying close attention to their interactions at the concert- which we will talk about soon..
I didn't make much of this bit until VJoonKook became a hold out on Jimin's birthday. They were the last three to post, two of whom ended up not posting at all for Jimin"s birthday- fucking traitors.
It was at this point I felt compelled to put on my tinfoil hat. And reevaluate the situation.
Why were these three people the same trio engaged in that little squabble just a few days ago on the timeline? I wondered.
It felt as if Taekook were engaged in a Russian Roulette racing the clock while Joonie stood by waiting to neutralize whatever shit those two were going to pull on the timeline.
Call me delusional but I felt JK was going to post, Tae was going to try to one up him with a ridiculous post or counter his post- V and his fucking VMin agenda! Lmho
RM was going to end up mirroring whatever JK was going to post to neutralize it as per usual- leave me alone. I said I'm delusional. Let me be. Lol.
There's just a lot going on all at once and it's easy to lose sight of subtle moments like these when they happen.
Like Jimin saying he would be on VLive soon, which first of all- yay!
Y'all know I've been keeping my eyes on the app, most especially how the members are going to use it post IPO, post Soop- I have a lot of questions; will they be monitored like they were in May? Will they be able to have intimate interactions with the fans like before?
Y'all know my theory about Jikook and the VLive stuff so I'll leave it there.
Now as for what this moment here means, I think it's a humbling experience for all of us but mostly for Jimin-JK you sonova bish! Lol
Jimin is the one who loves to flex his bond and relationship with JK, he loves to show off their relationship. He is the one who's been called all sorts of names under the sun just because of his relationship with JK- even if they are friends.
None of the members have suffered and paid a price for their relationship with JK the way Jimin has throughout the years. It is why I hate it when people compare the others to him. Even if it placates you and lessens your insecurities please don't.
I'm not pressed about no ship wars. Hell, I often start one myself- what? fun.
I'm worried for Jimin mostly.
I think JK more than anyone knows how this looks. Which is why I really don't think this is what he was aiming for all along. To make Jimin look this way- again not to say JM is better than the others he didn't post for.
I don't know what's going on with JK now but I am not about to tell you this moment is nothing. It is not nothing.
I know people want to console themselves with the whole my partner don't gotta show off on social media on my birthday to show he loves me- please shut up. Or may be don't. Y'all con shippers confound me.
This is Jikook here, showing is an integral part of their dynamics. Isn't that why people call them a fanservice ship? Because they show so much? Because they do so much?
Jikook like to show off their bond, they like claiming eachother, they like reassuring eachother and I'm sorry but Park Jimin's father set such high standards for his son's birthday for anyone who claim they love him to pull stunts like this. Do y'all know Jikook at all?! I have to ask.
Jimin loves to be treated like he is different and special. It's his love language. We know this, BTS knows this, JK knows this- don't make excuses for JK if at the very least you can't see what he was trying to do here.
Even if you don't think they are a couple they are best friends- at the bare minimum. It doesn't take more than a few seconds to login and wish a friend a happy birthday- Hobi made four and he is not dating Jimin. Just saying.
You can't yell Jikook show us a lot hence there's no need for wild theories and assumptions and bully people who come up with wild theories and then in the same breath say they don't have to openly show us they care about eachother for them to be real- Y'all are going to ship by faith now? Chileee.
I have said JK likes to retract and conceal and only shows what he chooses to show and this was his choice. It's as simple as that. He chose not to post.
He didn't do it because of no damn other members.
He occupies a huge space in JMs life to not know what this moment says about him and his highly publicized relationship with Jimin- chileee, whatever did park Jimin do to you, JK?! Jesus Christ!
Havent heard of a betrayal this grand since the birth of Judas Iscariot- Judas is that you? Lmho.
I joke but I don't find this funny at all. Bless them.
It's one thing to not post for the others, but it's different for Jimin. And this is not to say the others don't matter to JK, they do. He's called them all family but then again he hasn't placed any one of them on a pedestal the way he's placed Jimin on a pedestal now has he? So we cannot assume Jimin means the same to him as the others mean to him.
Isn't that why we ship them?
Personally, I'm hurt by all of this. It hurts me that some people are going to use this as an excuse to tease and bully Jimin, call him a liar, call into question the years of friendship between Jikook, call into question any future interactions between them- I don cried my eyes out all day for Jimin but also for JK.
It hurts that I have to defend JK and Jikook to anyone. The task wasn't easy before all of this- not that anybody sent me. Who died and made me their spokesperson. Chileee
But please let's not dismiss this moment or belittle it. It's monumental- to me anyway.
JK was on to something I'm just curious to know what stopped him this time around. I want to know if he plans on not posting at all for anyone in the future. How long is he going to keep at it?
He's tried to out them twice. Will he do it again? How is he going to do it? What is Jimin going to do if indeed this is what JK had been planning, how is this going to affect their dynamics- I'm excited for their journey however it goes.
It's their journey unauthored. I'm just here to observe and report- and may uWu while I'm at it.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, we gotta ask ourselves, had JK posted anything at all today knowing full well he hasn't posted at all for anyone in the group all year, that what would that have meant for their relationship? What message would that have sent?
While we lament about this moment, let's also take a minute to ponder over what this moment might have signified if JK had actually posted.
Everything he did in the days leading up to Jimin's birthday pointed to the fact he was definitely going to post. To me it felt he was gonna come out. He was. And if he had done it- my god!
JK isn't my favorite person right about now. He can go ahead and step on leggos. No kithes for him🙄
But I have faith in him. Always. He's consistently shown and proven his love and loyalty for Jimin through out the years. You don't nibble on a man's ear in front of sixty thousand people, to find posting a simple message on his birthday tedious. This is Jikook. If it feels wrong, it is wrong.
I wish I could tell yall, this moment means nothing, that JK not posting is not a big deal but I can't. This moment is everything.
Signed,
GOLDY

Um, if your requests are open. Could I request headcannons for Hinata, Kuroo, Kenma and Akaashi with an s/o that fosters kittens. Like how they help her out and stuff. (This is my first ask so sorry if its weird).
Headcanons for Hinata, Kuroo, Kenma, and Akaashi with an s/o that fosters kittens.
A/N: Ahhhh! We love a cute concept like this!! Also, your ask is definitely not weird. Very very cute. The concept got me to hop out of bed and start writing!! Thank you for the request!
~~~~
Okay, so I am pretty sure I read the request wrong. I am almost certain you meant to ask how the boys help the reader care for the cats. But I read this request immediately after waking up and just started writing. So I misinterpreted it as the boys’ reaction to a reader who fosters kittens to help her out (like how pets tend to ease stress and such). I already was halfway done with Akaashi’s by the time I realized my error and was enjoying what I’d written. I am so very sorry.
So I tacked on the ways the boys would help out with caring for the cats at the end of each one. I am sorry it makes the read a little awkward.
Hinata Shōyō
-The first time Hinata comes to your place and sees you have a fair number of kittens at your house he immediately collapses to the floor and starts playing with them.
-He is over the moon excited about the kittens and just wants to pet them.
-His… over-energetic nature scares away a couple of the shier kittens, but with your guidance, he can eventually get them to come over.
-At first, he seems completely content with sitting cross-legged on the floor, just holding the kittens in his lap and petting them gently. But eventually, you see him slightly bouncing his leg and then stopping every few seconds, and you can tell he’s getting a bit restless.
-So you pull out some cat toys and this is where Hinata really shines.
-He can play with every single kitten in your house without getting tired. Honestly, they’ll get tired out before he does.
-It’s perfect how he runs around the house with the stuffed mouse or bird teaser, ringing the little bell wildly while two or three kittens race after him, slipping on the floor at times.
-Is talking to you while he’s running.
-"Y/N! Y/N Y/N Y/N!! Did you see that? The little black one just went fwoosh and caught it!!! What a good kitten!! Aww cute little kitty cat,” he coos as he goes down to gently pet the little kitten with the bird teaser in its mouth.
-It goes on like this for a good long while.
-When everything calms down a bit his attention returns to you.
-He’s still pretty wired up, but he’s leaning back on the couch with one of your hands cupped between his as he tells you how cute they are and how much fun he had with them and then he finally gets around to asking why you have so many? Are they all yours?
-You explain that you foster kittens because they help calm you down and they help you relax when you’re anxious or cheer you up after a long day.
-And Hinata can’t help himself. He sits up and gives you a soft, quick kiss. “You’re so adorable,” he says, blushing a bit at his own words.
-He just loves how sweet you are and how well-cared for all your pets are.
-He really thinks of you as the most precious person ever and he really, really loves playing with the kittens every time he comes over.
~~~~
-Hinata loves to come over and play with the kittens
-In terms of actual care he does very little, but he does a good job of keeping them entertained while you take on other tasks and tiring them out so they fall asleep and don’t bother you at bedtime
-However, if you give Hinata a task, he will pull through
-You will need to ask him every single time you need help, and you might need to explain it multiple times, but he feels so special that you trust him to help you care for other lives.
- His favorite thing is when you let him give them their food because they all rush over and start eating. It makes him feel like a big provider and it makes him feel very special.
-Since you’re just fostering though… he cries so much when giving any of them away.
-If there’s one he’s particularly attached to he will adopt it. Might end up adopting two before realizing he can’t keep up care for any more than that so he just has to endure heartbreak if you keep getting new kittens to foster and giving them away when they find homes.
Kuroo Tetsurō
-Kuroo is canonically a dog person.
-So when he’s about three steps from entering your apartment for a coffee after your date, and you suddenly drop it on him that you have 3 foster kittens he mentally panics.
-Externally he keeps his cool save for his eyes widening slightly, and he enters like there’s nothing wrong.
-The cats are there to greet you at the door and you get down on one knee real quick to give them all their pets as they welcome you home and then head to the kitchen to start on the coffee.
-Kuroo stays in the living room and asks questions.
-Asking their names as each one walks over to him, and greeting them accordingly.
-He lets each of them sniff him at least 5 times because he’s scared of getting scratched.
-He takes a seat on your sofa as he waits for you and they all cuddle up to him, effectively covering his pants in cat hair as they rub up against him.
-When you come back with the coffee his hands are up and he gives you a nervous half-smile with eyes pleading for help.
-You can’t help but laugh at this grown man, who has been reduced by three sweet kittens.
- “You’re not a cat person, are you?”
- “I have… nothing against cats. I’m just… used to dogs.”
-You laugh at him again and he shakes his head, eyes on the floor as he lets loose a breathy laugh as well.
-You leave the cat that’s in his lap where it is, but take the other two and put one on your side, the other in your lap as you take a seat next to him.
-His arms drop, one gently placed on the kitten, the other spread out on the backrest of the sofa.
-The two of you talk and drink your coffee and Kuroo eventually starts relaxing, and petting the kitten on his lap.
-After a bit, it mews and his hand shoots straight up, “Sorry.”
-You laugh again at how jumpy he is about the kitten, “It’s fine. Good mew. Do what you just did again. She liked it. I promise.” You note how she’s gotten closer to him and has started headbutting his stomach, craving more of his affection.
-He looks at you with mock suspicion as he slowly brings his hand back down and pets the kitten on his lap just as he did before, scratching gently around its ears before trailing his hand down the length of its body.
-This time it purrs and he smiles so wide. He turns to look up at you, then down at the kitten, then back to you, and back to the kitten.
-His eyes are proud as the kitten continues purring in his lap and you can see that every time he looks at you his eyes are screaming, “Look! Do you see this?!”
- “See,” you say softly, petting the kitten by your side, “they’re such sweethearts. They make me so happy. This is why I love having them.”
-And his eyes shoot to you and they’ve softened immensely, though the excitement is still there.
-"What?”
-"It’s sweet.”
-"The kittens?”
-"No… well yes, but I mean….it’s sweet that you find comfort and joy in caring for another living thing.”
-You blush at his words and refocus your attention on the cat, but are well aware of the smile on his face, and the fact that he hasn’t looked away from you.
~~~~
-When it comes to caring for your kittens, Kuroo is awkward at best for the first stretch of time you ask him to help
-He’s pretty good at knowing what they need when they need it (some weird Nekoma instinct), but he’s really bad at knowing how to go about it
-The one thing he is naturally very good at is dealing with very young kittens at bedtime. Laying down bedding and getting them to nurse. Sometimes they have trouble with the bottle, and the milk is hard to get right, but Kuroo has it down. He is so good at taking care of putting them to bed.
-He’ll feed them and lay them down in the blankets he laid out.
-If you’re busy he’ll snap a picture of them and sneak up behind you. He’ll pull you into a hug, arms wrapped around your waist as he puts his chin on your shoulder. He kisses your neck before bringing his hands up to show you the photos of the sleeping kittens.
-He really loves seeing them being soft and cuddly and tired. He will play with them, but he much prefers them when they’re calm.
-Still is definitely a dog person.
Kenma Kozume
-Kenma is so comfortable with your cats.
-Kenma loves cats and they love him. This is canon.
-Remember when we first meet Kenma and he’s literally petting a cat and Hinata scares it away?
-That was a stray! One he clearly didn’t know since he’s from a different prefecture. It just approached him and he pet it. Cats are drawn to him, and he genuinely likes them.
-Arriving at your house for the first time, the kittens practically swarm him.
-He just goes in and sits down on a chair so he can pet them. He lets one of them jump up into his lap. He pets them as they purr and nuzzle against him.
-He’s got a slight smile on his face as he enjoys the affection of the cats.
- “Wow… you’re really good with them Kenma,” you say, picking up one of the kittens off the floor and holding it against you while you pet it.
- “I like cats,” he says, so calm and happy you can tell he’s not really thinking about what he’s saying.
- “Yeah?”
- “Yeah. They’re so relaxing and peaceful. They just make me feel… good.”
-His words are so genuine and calm that you have to fight the urge to just cover him in kisses.
-You instead place one quick kiss on the crown of his head and then go over to pull out plates to eat the takeout you picked up together.
-You feel so lucky to have found someone who gets exactly how you feel.
~~~~
-Kenma is good at literally everything regarding caring for the kittens.
-Since they love him, it’s easy for him to keep them all close together. So before feedings or bed or anything they’re all kept close.
-He loves to brush their fur out. It is his favorite thing. But he’s also really good at clipping their nails when they grow out too much and generally just keeping them well cleaned and taken care of
-Is also really good at remembering their vet appointments or when it’s time to schedule another appointment to get another round of shots or to get them spayed/neutered.
-Just really loves getting to spend time with them and you, and being able to relax so completely.
Akaashi Keiji
-Walking into your house for the first time becomes a memory that Akaashi Keiji revisits often, adoring every detail of the moment.
-He is so aware. He just sees how your face brightens and how your whole body eases. He loves seeing you so relaxed and happy.
-He has never seen you as perfectly calm and happy as when you’re with your cats.
-He plays with them and pets them a bit, but his attention is on you. Watching how careful you are with them, and how gentle and sweet you are. How you know the perfect way to get them to curl up and purr. He adores it.
-There’s a day when you have a date planned with Akaashi, but you’re overwhelmed by work and life and everything and it’s all very hectic.
- “Sorry I’m late Keiji, I just had to finish the project I was working on before I left and-”
- “It wasn’t long. I don’t mind waiting for you.”
- “So,” you sigh, clearly exhausted, “What’s the plan? Where are we going for dinner?”
- “If you’re up for it… I think I have an idea a bit better than dinner. What do you say?”
- “I’m game…. As long as there’s still food.”
- “There will be,” he says as he takes your hand in his and the two of you start walking to your new date location.
-Your casual dinner date now changes to a date at a cat cafe.
-He’s nervous about the change putting more stress on you, but once you’re inside playing with the cats, drinking, and eating and smiling at him, he knows it’ll be okay.
-He also really enjoys the cat cafe and befriends a calico there who spends almost the entire visit either in his lap or rubbing against his leg.
-But he’s really proud that he found a way to cheer you up and take care of you. To bring you peace when you were overwhelmed.
-He likes that he knows you well enough to be able to take care of you.
~~~~
-Akaashi is amazing at helping you care for your cats.
-He wants them to be well prepared. So he teaches them to behave, buys them a scratching post, and teaches them to only use the post. Trains them not to bite too much (outside of when they’re teething obviously), and is the one who effectively trains them to use the litter box.
-He’s all about them being set and ready so they’re well-behaved at their next home
-He is the most vocal with the cats. He’ll talk to them while he pets them. Not baby talk either. He’ll just begin talking to them really peacefully about his day and how they’re doing.
- “You see, everyone else has learned to not bite us, but you are so insistent on chewing away at us. But we feed you, little guy. So I don’t get why you won’t stop. Biting is ineffective and we’ve shown you that,” the kitten begins to purr under his touch as he keeps talking, “so why don’t you get it? You know we just want the best for you. At the very least haven’t you heard the expression to not bite the hand that feeds you? Huh?” He scratches the back of the kitten’s head lightly when asking those questions before resuming the long strokes over its body.
-He won’t even realize he’s talking to the kitten, he just does it every time he sits down with any of them.
-He just blushes and pretends it didn’t happen if he sees you’ve caught him.
The Price of a Bean and the Cost of Love
Summary: With no clue how to defeat a villain the town can’t remember, Hook and Emma venture to the Enchanted Forest to retrieve some magical items from the Evil Queen’s castle. Along the way, they rediscover the connection they shared before they were separated by worlds a year ago. 3B canon divergence, Rated T, 8k, also on AO3 here
A/N: Happy Holidays @phiralovesloki I’m your CS Secret Santa! I hope this little fic will bring you some cheer to this wild year :) Honestly I had so many ideas after revisiting season 3 that I’m definitely down to write more S3 renaissance/divergence fics from now on!
Thank you @cssecretsanta2020 for another great event!
-/-
The more frequently they host these hushed conversations by the fireplace, the more Emma grows to despise the décor of Granny’s B&B, however cozy it may be. It’s difficult to keep Henry safe whilst also keeping him away from these discussions of the Enchanted Forest and curses and magic, so the common area of the B&B is the best option when she knows he is tucked away asleep upstairs.
Her parents and Regina are going back and forth at each other while Hook stands by the fire, raising an eyebrow every time Regina fires an insult or her mother shoots down Regina’s suggestions with judgement.
“Well, even if we could figure out who did this, they’ve done a spectacular job of making sure I can’t fight back by stripping my entire vault of anything magical that could help. I bet it’s all just sitting back at the castle, wilting away like this damn town will under this curse.” Regina bites out angrily.
They all silently reflect on her words and Emma can’t help but wish she were back in New York right now. At least then her issues would be about prying Henry away from his video games long enough to sleep and do homework, not trying to protect him from some unknown fairy tale villain who had cursed their family and friends and was turning people into flying monkeys. God, what is her life?
“What if we could retrieve some things from your castle?” Hook asks, everyone swinging their heads up to look at him curiously.
“What the hell do you mean, pirate?” Regina demands. Hook sighs and pinches his nose; a gesture Emma finds herself sympathizing with when dealing with Regina.
“I mean that I have a way of returning to the Enchanted Forest. I can use it to fetch your magical goods and then you can do your thing with your little bottles and jars and we can resolve all of this.”
“And how exactly do you have a way of getting back there?” David asks suspiciously. Hook fishes in his jacket pocket and reveals a magic bean, rolling it between his fingers slowly.
“I procured two beans, the first I used to get to Emma in New York. The second, well let’s just say I had it saved for a rainy day. Now, this cursed business is really only a slight drizzle for me, but if it will help, the offer stands.” The offer had mostly been made to Regina, but Emma finds Hook’s gaze on her. She’s pretty sure he was not offering this bean for Regina’s sake.
“Well, I don’t trust you to go alone.” Regina shrugs. Hooks rolls his eyes upward in frustration and Emma’s lips twitch a little. The man is not particularly good at hiding his emotions.
“I’ll go too.”
Her words are met with immediate disagreement from her parents, but she patiently waits for them to finish their complaints before speaking.
“Look, you’re all cursed. As far as we know, you can’t leave town let alone jump through a portal. Hook and I are the only people not affected by the curse. He brought me here to help, so this is something I can help with. I’m the saviour after all.” Emma sighs, glaring at her parents until they surrender.
“Is this even necessary? Regina, I’m sure you can cope without your things for now. We can find another way to figure out who cast the curse and defend ourselves if need be.” Snow says firmly, David backing her up with an affirmative nod and a squeeze of her shoulder.
“Isn’t it better to have and not need, than need and not have?” Hook interjects.
“See? The pirate gets it. He’s willing to give up a bean for this. What would the town say if they find out their royal highnesses didn’t do everything they could to protect them?” Regina says smugly.
“Look, guys, enough. Hook and I will go get Regina’s magical crap from the castle, end of discussion. I don’t like not having all the tools possible to face who or whatever this is.”
“Thank you, Miss Swan.” Regina says, her tone indicating it was more of a dig at her parents than actual gratitude.
“Fine. But how will you get back? You only have one bean.” David asks. Emma looks to Hook for answers, considering this was his plan to begin with. He catches her eye and clears his throat with an awkward scratch of his ear.
“I can get another bean from the same seller. I know where he is.” Emma knows he’s hiding something, and she plans on pushing him on it later, but for now she lets it slide.
“Well, how do you know that he has more, or that you can get one from him? It’s a bit of a precarious plan, especially now my daughter is coming.” David replies roughly.
“I trust that Hook will get us back, okay. We should probably get going soon and I want to say goodbye to Henry first. I know you’ll all take care of him, but he’ll think I’m leaving him with strangers, and I don’t want him to worry.” Emma heads upstairs before more disagreements break out, exhaling with relief at the tiny amount of peace the dark, quiet hallway provides.
She wakes Henry to explain that she needs to go somewhere else for work, but she will be back in no time. He’s sleepy and confused, but he smiles when she says he will be treated to all the ice cream from the mayor he wants and some lovely meals from her friends (yes, the one that was apparently her cellmate). Emma hugs him tightly and says goodnight once again, watching over him for a moment before turning off the light and closing the door.
“You don’t have to come along, Swan.” Hook says softly from behind her as he exits his own room.
“And let you have all the fun trashing Regina’s castle? I don’t think so.” She scoffs. They share a brief look, and, in this moment, she is particularly grateful for this uncanny ability they seemed to have developed of understanding each other with a single glance. It’s simultaneously terrifying and comforting to know Hook can read her so well.
Emma says goodbye to her parents while Hook gets strict rules from Regina about what to do in her castle and he looks like he’d rather switch places with her and be hugging David right now. She’s hoping they will be back pretty soon but and she’s putting all her faith in Hook’s suspiciously vague plan to get them another bean home, but her trust in him grows each time he does something selfless, chipping away at her suspicions with his surprising decency and kindness.
They head out the back behind the B&B, the frosty air nipping at her skin as she shivers. Hook’s breath comes out in clouds when he offers her one last chance to back out, but Emma simply shakes her head, and he tosses the bean on the grass. The portal swirls in front of them and a second later they’re jumping through in a dizzy haze of flashing lights and crackling sounds.
With a rough landing in between some trees and a distinct shift in the atmosphere, Emma knew they had made it to the Enchanted Forest. Well, running back to New York wasn’t exactly an option anymore.
-/-
“I walked around the Enchanted Forest in my normal clothes last time, I don’t see why it’s an issue now.” Emma grumbles, fighting with the heavy material of the skirt they had nabbed from a clothing line. Hook had already explained it to her, but he indulges her complaints nevertheless.
“We don’t know what or who has been left here after the curse. Looking like you’re from another world is a sure-fire way to gain attention, and we want to get in and back as soon as possible, right lass?” He smirks at her grumbled response as they continue down the path in the forest, squinting at the peak of the castle ahead of them. They had been walking for some time; unfortunately, the bean did not let him pick an arrival spot closer to the castle. He had thought that perhaps this time alone with Emma would be pleasant, perhaps even a time for them to reconnect after being separated for a year, but so far Emma appears to be preoccupied with her own thoughts.
“Did you miss going on adventures with me while you were in New York?” He asks teasingly, glancing over at Emma as she scoffs.
“You bet. The Big Apple had nothing on trekking through trees and beanstalks in strange lands with a pirate.” She replies humorously.
“The Big Apple?”
“It’s a nickname for New York.”
“Your land never ceases to confuse me, Swan.”
“Yeah, well, staying in New York would have meant not having to deal with the confusion of curses and villains.” He can sense the shift in Emma’s attitude with her bitter words and he sighs.
“So, you would have preferred it if I had left you alone in your new life.”
“I’m glad you came and gave me my memories back, but you have to understand how hard it’s been for me leaving that life of blissful ignorance to the existence of…all of this.” Emma waves her hands around, gesturing at the land they’re in.
“You act like knowing of the existence of magic and fairy tales is a burden. But don’t you ever think about what it has to offer, what it’s already given you?”
“When magic was the entire reason for me growing up alone? For my parents being cursed twice now? For Neal’s crappy childhood and Regina killing a bunch of people and countless other shitty things? Sorry, I’m just a little preoccupied dealing with all of that that see the beauty in it.” Emma speeds up her steps and Hook strides to match her pace. She’s clearly jaded, and she has every right to be, but he feels like he should be doing more to reason with her. He suspects that her dismissal of magic and this world will cause a chasm soon enough, pulling her further away and back into the noisy streets of the city she seems to love so much.
They continue along the path in relative silence, jumping into the trees when they hear the odd carriage or footsteps ahead as a precaution to avoid potential foes or having to explain who they are. Hook can feel the air cooling as the day progresses and he’s concerned about the few hours of daylight they have left. He hadn’t thought that they could achieve everything in a single day, but Emma’s cold demeanor had put him off broaching the topic of resting come nightfall.
The castle soon becomes visible as the trees thin and the path becomes wider. Hook is surprised that no one is around. He wasn’t sure what to expect, but he had wondered if some strays left behind from the curse would ransack it or something. From appearances, it had been left alone, which was a good sign for collecting all of the necessary items Regina requested.
“The way Regina talked about this place I thought it would be beautiful, but honestly it’s kind of ugly.” Emma comments, making eye contact with him for the first time in over an hour. He smirks, nodding in agreement and pleased they can at least mock the architecture together.
“Aye, her taste is indeed questionable.”
“It’s weird to think my grandparents lived here, that my mom grew up here. I feel so disconnected from all of this.” Emma admits as they walk up the stairs to the main entrance. It’s so eerily quiet that Hook is reminded of the curse that hit everyone here, snatching them away to the land without magic. Their trek to the castle and his concerns of Emma’s longing for her old life had almost made him forget why they were here in the first place.
“Perhaps that is something you could discuss with your mother. Maybe hearing stories of her childhood and your grandparents will help you appreciate this part of your life more.”
“So that I won’t want to go back to New York you mean?” Emma asks flatly.
“I didn’t mean it like that. I just meant that, like you said, you are disconnected from your history here, and maybe understanding it more will help you better accept magic being in your life.” Hook shrugs, trying to pass it off as nonchalant. Emma hums suspiciously and he realizes he really has no ability to pretend anything other than the truth with her.
“And perhaps I don’t want to say goodbye again.” He adds boldly. Since Emma regained her memories, he’s been dancing around his feelings for her, prioritizing her return to town and figuring out the business of this new curse. After all, she was juggling her cursed parents and her son’s own sheltered memories, she hardly needed him making things more difficult.
“There is a lot of New York you haven’t seen yet. There’s more to the city than the inside of a jail cell.” She jokes, giving him a lopsided smile. They’ve reached the main entrance now, the doors grand and intimidating in their aggressive spikes and bolts as deterrents. Hook pulls on the large handle, the door creaking loudly in the otherwise quiet entrance. The immediate hall inside is empty, no guards or thieves in sight, and they step in apprehensively.
“Are you suggesting I should come to the city with you, if you were to return?” He asks as Emma glances around in wonder.
“Well, I-” She starts, but she suddenly stops and slams into him, knocking them both to the floor as streaks of fire blaze above them. The fire singes the floor right where they had stood, fizzling out after scorching most of the entranceway. Hook looks around frantically, not seeing anyone around to cause balls of fire to hurdle at them. Emma’s heavy skirts and cloak are draped over him, her hair tickling his face as she moves off him with a groan.
“I’m sorry, it just came out of nowhere and I reacted.” She sits up awkwardly, looking around to see if any more fire could come their way as she shifts her cloak back over her bodice correctly and puffing out her now red cheeks.
“No worries, lass. I’m impressed by your quick reaction.” Hook replies as he stands, offering her his hand to help her up.
“I deal with some shifty people at work, I’ve got to be fast.” Emma shrugs. He delicately moves a curl of her hair back in place, catching her eyes as he does so. It’s the softest she’s looked since he found her in New York, a look he hadn’t seen since they said goodbye at the town line a year ago. It lasts only a moment before she looks away, but he’ll hold onto it as a sign that whatever formed between them in the cruel humidity of Neverland still lingered in her soul.
They cautiously proceed through the castle towards Regina’s tower, both on the lookout for other apparent protection spells that were still in effect. He wondered if they would find some hint of what happened before the curse, but everything seemed normal, at least for the castle of the Evil Queen. Once they find her room, they quickly grab bottles and books and trinkets from the vanity, tossing them into a sack he had in his pocket.
“Regina said she has a room where she keeps more things, but it’s sealed with blood magic so this will have to suffice.” Hook tells Emma as she sniffs one of the bottles and grimaces.
“And no doubt she will blame us if this stuff isn’t what she needs.” Emma scoffs. The setting sun reflects off the vanity mirror and Emma’s hair shines in the hazy orange glow. He admires her for a moment before stepping away to stand at the balcony, looking out the stretch of land ahead and the pastel colours of the sunset. Emma soon joins him, and they stand together and watch the changing colours of the sky in silence.
“I don’t know how Regina could stand here and see something so beautiful out there and want to retreat into this cold, dark palace.” Emma says quietly.
“Maybe she was scared of the potential life outside of this, so she retreated to something familiar.” He replies, glancing over at Emma to see his meaning was not lost on her by the way she shakes her head. He thinks she’s ready to launch into another defence of her wanting to go back to New York, but she doesn’t say anything. To his surprise, she shuffles closer and rests her head on his shoulder. They stay like that for a while, until a chill settles over them and Emma sighs wistfully.
“So where is this bean seller?” She asks, pulling her cloak around herself with a shiver.
“He should be down by the water. But we should rest for the night. It’s a bit of a walk to the port, even longer and more hazardous in the dark.” Hook replies, his stomach sinking at the thought of the next part of their quest.
“Okay, but I don’t want to stay here. I’m sure the beds in the guest rooms are nice but this place freaks me out. Is there an inn or something close by? Preferably somewhere we could find some kind of food.” Emma laughs lightly when her stomach rumbles mid-sentence.
“Aye, there’s a tavern in a village close by, if we leave now, perhaps we can make it by the light that’s left of the day. I have no idea if anyone will be there, but there may be something left behind we could salvage to eat.” Hook grabs the sack of magical items and swings it over his shoulder, ushering Emma ahead as they quickly descend from the tower.
He keeps close to Emma as they walk in the dusky light, glancing ahead as the individual trees of the forest become indiscernible and form an ominous tunnel of darkness.
“Why did you have two beans?” Emma asks, her voice breaking the quietness of the night.
“Well, why not?” He evades with a cheeky tone.
“You said you were saving it for a rainy day. I get being prepared for the worst, but it seemed like you had a specific purpose for it.” Hook thinks for a moment, deciding whether or not to tell the truth. He thinks of her head on his shoulder earlier and the way it felt so simple and easy to stand by her side in peace.
“I got a second one in case you wanted me to leave.”
“Leave?” Emma asks incredulously.
“You had a life in Storybrooke with the town and your family, and then again in New York with your boy. I came to bring you back to them, but I never had a place in that life of yours. I have stayed for the possibility that I could, but if you wished that I didn’t, I would return here and never burden you again.” Hook tugs on the sack awkwardly as they walk, almost wishing he could see her face but also relieved to be shielded by the darkness.
Emma is quiet, and the longer she doesn’t speak, the more anxious he becomes. She could easily turn around right now and tell him she does want him to leave her life, and the thought makes his chest ache.
“You’re not a burden, Hook.” She says quietly. He takes that as the smallest of victories and relaxes a little. He thinks she’s about to say more when she suddenly trips, slipping onto the ground with a painful groan.
“Swan!” He tosses the sack down and kneels beside her, widening his eyes in the dark as if that would help him see better.
“I think I hit my…” Emma mumbles. Hook gently touches her face, feeling blood already forming at the cut at her temple. He kicks around and feels a rock on the path just as Emma turns on the ground and retches.
“Concussion.” She mutters, slumping against his chest.
“Aye, that was a nasty hit to the side of your head, lass.” He says softly as he brushes her hair away from the cut. She’s in no state to continue walking, but there’s no way they can stop here for the night; she’ll certainly need food and water to ease her discomfort. He reaches for the sack and loops the string over his hook before scooping her up in his arms, much to her disoriented chagrin.
“Down, I’ve had this loads before.”
“Doesn’t matter how often this happens to you, Swan. I’m not having you wander about in the dark in this state. You’ll end up knocking me out too with your stumbling.” He teases lightly. She grumbles something unintelligible, but he takes her burrowing herself against him as resignation. Hook watches her close her eyes and furrow her brows and he hopes he can reach that damn tavern soon.
-/-
A wave of nausea hits Emma when she opens her eyes, the image of the room feeling like a puzzle her brain is too slow to piece together. A candle flickers on the other side of the room, the dancing flame making her unsteady vision worse. She slides up the bed she lays in, wincing in discomfort. Looking around the room at the simple décor, she assumes this is the tavern. To her left is another single bed, the sack of Regina’s things sitting on top along with Hook’s jacket. There is a cup and a pitcher of water on the small table in the middle of the beds and she clumsily pours some and takes a slow drink, her dry lips and throat relieved to feel the liquid.
She tentatively reaches up to touch her head, feeling a small bandage across the cut on her temple, her hair damp from what she hopes is the water used to clean the wound and not blood. The door creaks open and Emma is relieved to see Hook.
“Ah good, you’re awake.” He says softly. She notices the plate he’s carrying and practically salivates at the thought of food, but he puts it down on the table and stands beside her bed, gently lifting her chin up with his fingers.
“Your eyes look alert, I’m sure some colour will come back to your cheeks once you’ve eaten.” His fingers are warm against her skin and she feels cold as soon as his hand slips away.
“I was able to bring up some cheese and a small amount of bread, but Sylvia won’t allow any hot food in the rooms. If you are feeling well enough, we can go down a bit later for something more.” Hook explains as he passes her the plate of the ration sized portions of bread and cheese.
“Sylvia?” She asks before tucking in, happy to have a least something to put in her stomach.
“The owner of the tavern. Turns out, the curse left a few people from different villages all over. A lot of them gathered here after the curse hit and made their own sort of village. It’s a lively little place.”
“Does anyone know what happened?”
“Not in any great detail. Some were outside of the boundaries and saw it descend, but they didn’t know why. They said it was a green fog that seemed to appear from Regina’s castle. They’ve all been too scared to go there in case its dangerous, but no one knows who cast it or why.” Hook sits down on the other bed and slides out the flask from his jacket pocket. She watches him take a drink and longs for the pleasantly warm feeling of his rum.
“Have you eaten yet?” She asks, swallowing the last of the bread guiltily.
“I had some bread and cheese downstairs.”
“We should go get some warm food now. I’m still hungry and I bet you are too.” Emma says firmly as she moves off of the bed. Hook jumps up to stop her, his hand gently holding on to her shoulder like she’s going to break.
“Are you well enough?”
“Hook, I’m fine. It was a concussion; I’ve gotten them plenty of times when a skip is rough on the run and I still catch them every time.”
“Aye, but head injuries can be fatal. Just because you feel fine doesn’t mean you are.” He replies with concern. She rolls her eyes and tugs on his arm as she feels her stomach grumble in desire of more food, pulling him towards the door.
“And if I faint it could easily be from hunger. Come on.”
Hook leads the way down the stairs to the common area of the tavern, the old place dimly lit with candles scattered about, leaving pools of melted wax around them. Emma hears the buzz of chatter from the front room and is surprised to see so many people here. Hook ushers her to the table closest to the fire that was fortunately free and she hums in appreciation at the warmth. She sees him gesture to the woman behind the bar she assumes is Sylvia, who gives her a once over and smiles before leaving through the door behind her.
“The food will be here shortly, Swan.” Hook reassures her as he sits down on the bench beside her. They both soak in the heat of the fire eagerly, Hook holding out his hand in front of the flames for warmth. Emma subtly looks over him, noticing his tired eyes in the gleam of the fire and his tense shoulders. They hadn’t been able to see the light from the tavern before she hit her head, so she assumes they had still been a fair distance from it, which meant that he had walked all that way with her in his arms in the dark. He must have also tended to her wound and made sure she had a soft place to lie down when they got here.
“Hey, um, thanks for making sure I was okay.” She says awkwardly, reaching out to give his arm a squeeze. He seems surprised by her gesture, raising an eyebrow and quickly looking back at the fire.
“Of course, love.”
“And you’re not some stray dog I’m going to get rid of by the way. You’ve helped me and my family out a lot. I said that you could be part of something, and I meant it.” Emma speaks quietly, aware that they had attracted some attention from the other patrons when they came down. Hook nods and puts his hand over hers on his arm with a soft smile.
“Some warm stew for the lovebirds.” Sylvia says loudly as she comes towards them with two steaming bowls and some water. Emma gives Hook a questioning look, but he responds with his own vague expression that tells her to play along. They thank Sylvia and tuck in, Emma too grateful for the warm bowl of food to even care what’s in it. Her body instantly relaxes at the taste of food and she practically inhales the whole bowl, realizing the last warm meal she ate back in Storybrooke felt like days ago. Hook grins at her and asks Sylvia for seconds for both of them. Four bowls of stew later they turn back to the fire, feeling full, warm, and surprisingly relaxed.
“Lovebirds?” Emma murmurs to him, knocking his shoulder with her own teasingly.
“I told her you are my wife. I thought it the easiest way to explain a passed-out woman in my arms that I needed to stay with.” Hook explains sheepishly.
“I’m surprised she gave us a room with two beds then.” She scoffs.
“It was the last room left.” Hook says humorously. Emma hums in understanding but starts gnawing on her lip at the fact that a mild swell of disappointment fills her chest. She hadn’t given much thought to their sleeping arrangements beyond finding a bed outside of Regina’s castle to lie on for the night, but now that they have a room with beds of their own, she thinks about what it might have been like had there only been one. It’s ridiculous and she puts it down to the overwhelming craziness of the past few days making her yearn for some comfort and that is it.
“Disappointed, Swan?” Hook smirks, flashing her the smoldering gaze that obviously gets him a lot of attention.
“Please.” She rolls her eyes; glad her cheeks were already flushed by the fire. The heat of the fire and the tension simmering between them brings her right back to Neverland and she licks her lips at the thought of their kiss. Emma finds herself feeling the same desire to throw caution to the wind and kiss him again. It seems fitting that they are in another world again and away from her home that she can lock these moments away in the compartments of her mind that separate reality and these fantasy experiences.
Loud cheering from across the room breaks the intense gaze between them. Emma exhales and takes a drink of water, watching the group of men begin to play music. They tease each other about their singing voices as they start a song off-key, a couple of the rowdier ones getting up to dance with no coordination. The other patrons clap and cheer them on, some of them joining in with the dancing.
“Go on loves, join in!” Sylvia encourages them with a wink as she clears away their bowls. Hook grins wickedly, taking great pleasure in the way she groans with dread.
“Nope. You can’t get me up there, I have no idea what this jig type thing even is.” She says firmly, watching a couple shake their legs in strange ways as they twirl around.
“Then it’s a good thing you have a partner who knows what he’s doing.” She can’t help but stare wide eyed at Hook as he stands up, offering with his hand with a warm smile. With a wince, she puts her hand in his and lets him lead her to the middle of the room, holding on to him as he positions them for the dance.
“Remember I have a damn concussion, Hook.” Emma grumbles, breathing in sharply when he brings her closer to his chest.
“I’ll go easy on you, love.” He whispers in her ear as his stubble grazes her cheek. He guides her through some basic moves, and she feels laughter bubble up in her chest at the absurdity of the situation. They manage to jump and twist in time to the music a few times, both of them laughing at her lack of coordination despite him practically leading each of her body parts that needed to move. Emma finds herself enjoying it, giggling happily when she eventually starts to pick it up. When the music begins to pick up in tempo she sways into Hook, feeling a little overwhelmed by the fast movements. He responds by holding her waist and tucking her against his shoulder as they sway slightly. They’re no longer moving to the music, but she finds that she doesn’t care that they’re swaying slowly near the rowdy crowd still skipping about.
“How do you know how to dance like that?” Emma murmurs close to his ear.
“The crew and I would frequent taverns like this and picked it up. We even danced on the Jolly some nights, especially in the summer when the air was warm and smelled sweet.” She hears the sadness in his voice, and she realizes she doesn’t know what happened to Hook during the missing year or where his ship was.
“What happened to the Jolly?”
“An illustrious bean seller has her.” Hook says quietly, and Emma leans back to look at him. She searches his eyes, and it dawns on her what he means.
“You traded your ship for me?”
“Aye.”
She’s overwhelmed by this revelation and for the first time stops overthinking and just reacts, her lips finding his with relief. It feels warm and comforting to be in his embrace, and for the first time since leaving New York, she truly feels the spark of her old life reignited. It’s then when she feels the stir of passion and peace swell inside her a wave of exhaustion hits her and she sinks into him weakly.
“As much as I love a woman swooning at my feet Swan, you need to rest now.” Hook teases, kissing her forehead gently. They leave the boisterous fun of the tavern for the quiet chill of their room for the night and Emma practically collapses into bed, her limbs screaming out for rest. She’s already slipping into sleep when she feels Hook kiss her cheek and she dozes off to the burn of desire from the high of their kiss.
-/-
Hook wakes up to a pressure against his right side, twitching his nose at the tickle of hair. It takes him a moment to adjust to the dim light of early morning before realizing it’s Emma, pressed against him and deeply asleep still. She must have climbed into his bed at some point in the night, but he has no memory of being stirred in his sleep (he most certainly would have remembered Emma Swan coming into his bed).
The beds were small and certainly not made for two people, but he’s far from mad to have her body against his in the morning. Their kiss last night had been unexpected to say the least. Hook had been well aware that the truth of his ship’s whereabouts would come to light at some point given that they needed to find the man who had it, but he thought perhaps Emma wouldn’t realize what exactly had transpired. For the sake of their relationship, he was glad she had seemed to know the gravity of it. Hook stays in bed for a while, holding Emma as she sleeps. He dozes in and out until she begins waking up.
“Morning, Swan.” He says warmly, watching as she frowns and takes in her surroundings.
“Um, hi. I’m sorry, I was freezing.” She says all flustered, wriggling out of bed quickly.
“No worries, I was too.” Emma nods apprehensively at him, rubbing her eyes sleepily. They awkwardly dance around each other as they splash water on their faces and shrug on their cloak and jacket, ready to leave as Hook hoists up the sack. Sylvia convinces them to grab breakfast before they leave, shoving bread rolls in their hands as they head out. The port isn’t too far, but it’s another decent walk there and he’s grateful for the sustenance.
This walk feels more comfortable between them than the one to the castle and despite the awkwardness after waking up, Emma seems more relaxed now. He teases her about watching out for rocks on the path, laughing when she playfully shoves him into the grass. He feels these moments from Emma are rare, so he cherishes the sound of her laugh and the curve of her smile. They hadn’t broached the topic of New York again, and Hook thinks it best to leave it until they return to Storybrooke. Perhaps their little quest will help defeat this new foe quickly and Emma can appreciate her exposure to the magical world. Or perhaps she will decide to still go, but he can go with her. The noisy, busy streets of her city would be bearable if it meant still having her in his life.
The brilliant blue of the water rests ahead and before long he recognizes the Jolly, his heart sinking at the thought of his home belonging to another. He had wondered if he would ever see it again, which may have been the less painful scenario than seeing another captain at the helm.
“I’ll do the bargaining, lass. This is personal between Blackbeard and I, so it’s best you stay back.” Hook warns Emma as they reach the ship, still glorious and majestic in comparison to the other ships around her.
“I can hold my own, Hook. This is my bargain too, is it not?” Emma retorts. He shakes his head, wishing she hadn’t taken his words as a dismissal of her strength.
“Aye, but Blackbeard is cruel. If he sees how important this is to you, he will do something vindictive. And quite honestly, I’m concerned he will hurt you if he knows how much you mean to me.” Emma opens and closes her mouth but doesn’t seem to find the words to respond and simply nods.
She hangs back while he walks up the ramp and onto the ship, surveying the small changes made here and there. He did not see a familiar face in the crew, but most of his had been loyal and left when he did, some finding other crews to join and others venturing off elsewhere.
“Hook, as I live and breathe! I did not expect to see your sorry soul standing on this ship ever again.” Blackbeard bellows, an arrogant smile on his face.
“I’m in need of another bean.” Hook says curtly.
“You blew through the two I gave you already? What the hell are you playing at, mate?”
“Do you have another or not?”
“Aye, but the cost…do you even have anything of value left to trade?” Blackbeard inspects him, his eyes landing on the sack of Regina’s things. Hook tosses it to him, watching him catch it with intrigue.
“Take your pick.”
Blackbeard rifles through and snorts obnoxiously.
“Trinkets? Jars? What fool do you take me for? You must be desperate coming to me with this junk in search of a bean. Why do want one so badly?” Blackbeard stares intensely waiting for him to crack. Hook matches his gaze silently, but he sees Blackbeard’s eyes wander to the harbour and with a sinking feeling, Hook knows by the grin on his face that he has seen Emma.
“A woman, of course. The very same woman you needed the first bean for perhaps? She’s a beauty, that’s for sure. Well, in that case, what is she worth to you?” He challenges, smug that he has Hook in such a position.
“Name your price.” Hook grits out.
“Oh, you love her. In that case…your life of servitude for a bean. She gets the bean; I own your soul.”
Hook feels the colour drain from his face. This had been a risky plan all along, but such a bargain was so painfully steep he was taken aback. Perhaps he shouldn’t have been considering he truly does not have anything else to offer beyond his own life. But this was his plan, and he would be damned if Emma suffered because of it.
“Fine. Deal. But I get to give her the bean myself and say goodbye.” Hook says wistfully. Blackbeard actually looks surprised for a moment, but he shrugs and gives Hook the precious bean from a little pouch in his pocket, along with the sack of Regina’s apparently worthless items. He heads back to Emma, trying to keep a neutral face but struggling.
“So, you got it, right? What was the trade?”
“Here it is, Swan. Take it. You’ll be home in no time.” He evades as he curls the bean into her hand, clicking his tongue when Emma glares at him.
“Hook, what did you do to get it?”
“I’ll remain here and work for Blackbeard.”
“Okay…for how long?”
“The rest of my life I suppose.”
“No. Absolutely not, we can find another way to get back.” Emma shakes her head vehemently.
“The town needs you too much. We don’t know what has transpired while we’ve been gone, and you need to get Regina her things and be with your boy.” Hook says softly.
“They need you too.” Emma replies, reaching for his hand when he shakes his head.
“Killian…I need you.” His chest aches at the way she uses his name. Her words both fill his chest with happiness and break his heart; of course she expresses such a sentiment when they must part once more. Her fingers are laced between his and he holds her gentle hand tightly, not ready to let go.
“You don’t, Swan. You did just fine without me the for the past year.” He replies with a short humourless laugh.
“Because I didn’t remember you. If I did…I don’t think I would have started seeing Walsh. Maybe I would have-”
“No use speculating now, lass. It’s in the past, but right now you need to worry about your family and the town. Don’t worry about me.” He makes sure she has the bag of Regina’s things and kisses her cheek softly, smiling sadly when she dips her head and brushes against him.
“Not a day will go by that I won’t think of you.” She whispers.
“Good.” He responds, wishing that perhaps this goodbye will only be temporary like the last turned out to be, but the reality of Blackbeard’s bargain weighs heavily on him and Emma already feels a world away from his damned soul. They linger for a moment longer before separating, Emma exhaling and looking at the bean as she walks away from him and out of the busy docking area, turning back with a wistful smile only once. He waits until he sees her go through the portal in the distance before heading back onto the Jolly, ignoring Blackbeard’s taunts to retreat below deck.
He’s home, but without his freedom and without the woman he loves. A more sensible man would also be without hope, but when he meets the crew, he sees a few familiar faces, and the way they call him captain in hushed tones stirs something in him to fight to get back what he has lost. He’ll bide his time, but after being around the heroes, their penchant for hope has certainly inspired him.
Things never seem to slow when Emma returns. In the time that she had been gone, Regina had discovered that it had been her sister Zelena who cast the curse and she had been masquerading as Snow’s midwife. She had barely been back a day when they finally found Neal, but she lost him again just as quickly as he had come back. The reasons for returning to New York only grew with every painful and dangerous thing that happened. She even tried working on her magic and learning from Regina, but when Zelena took her newborn sibling in an attempt to cast a ridiculous time travel spell, Emma had had it.
She would be leaving for New York once her parents were settled with her brother, and not a moment later.
But the reported sighting of the Jolly Roger down by the harbour had her pause her exit plans.
Emma had avoided speaking of Hook, simply telling people when she returned that he had decided to remain in the Enchanted Forest. No one seemed convinced, but thankfully didn’t push her on it. In some twisted way she had been pleased to have so much to deal with that she didn’t have time to think about what his absence meant for her, but in quiet moments of respite, she longed for the warmth of his presence in her life.
When she gets the text about the Jolly, she races down to the docks, wishing she had taken her car as she carries Henry’s book with her rather awkwardly. She finally gets close enough to see the little figures of people walking about the deck, and if she squints really hard, she thinks she can see Hook.
It’s unmistakably him when she reaches the ship and she calls his name, smiling at his reaction as his eyes find her. She hurries up the ramp and throws her arms around him so hard the book slams into his back, causing him to chuckle into her hair.
“Hi, Swan.”
“Hi, I’m sorry I just didn’t think I’d ever really see you again. How did you get the ship back from Blackbeard? Did you use another bean to get here? How the hell does he have so many?” She rattles off, tucking the book under her arm after their embrace.
“I’ll explain all later, but more importantly, what happened here? Did you figure out who cast the curse?” He asks with concern, looking over her to make sure she was okay and frowning at the book.
“It was Regina’s sister, the Wicked Witch of the West. It was some sibling rivalry crap, but she wanted my baby brother for a time travel spell and mayhem ensued. We’ve stopped her but…I’ve lost my magic and we lost Neal.” Hook reaches out for her and she leans in to his touch, relieved to feel the spark of comfort she usually feels around him.
“I’m so sorry, Swan.”
“Look, I know how you feel about it, but I just really wanted to go back to New York after all this. Henry gave me his book to remind me of the magic that makes up our family history, and I’ve been trying but I’m just…exhausted.” Emma sighs, sinking into him when he reaches his arm out to embrace her.
“Well, I just got here, you can’t leave now.” Hook jokes softly. Emma is about to respond with a quip of her own when she sees a beam of light flash in the distance.
“What the hell is that?” Emma mutters, trying to figure out where the light was coming from. She has a horrible suspicion that it may be coming from the barn and she groans, tugging on Hook’s jacket sleeve to follow her as she heads over there.
“David left a message, Zelena died and somehow triggered the time portal.” Emma yells over the loud noise of the magic when they reach the barn.
“Emma, perhaps we shouldn’t get too close.”
“We need to close it!”
They swirl around in a magical portal once again, being thrown into another unexpected and unpredictable adventure. But, as always, Hook is by her side, and she’s realizing that despite the pain magic has caused in her life, it has also brought him into her life, and maybe it’s about facing the hardships together.
“You don’t have your magic, it’s too dangerous."
"But-"
She’s interrupted by the sheer force of the magic pulling them toward the portal and they cling to each other as they tumble on the ground roughly. They both struggle to avoid falling in, Hook using his appendage to grip onto the ground. Emma holds on to his hand, but she feels herself slipping away and she’s worried he’ll leave her to fall into the unknown hole of time. She meets his eyes, and he lifts his hook to fall in with her.
And so she decides to do just that. When their little adventure in the past comes to an end, after witnessing her parents fall in love, attending a ball, almost losing her mother, and maybe falling in love with Captain Hook along the way, she decides to make Storybrooke her home. There are the occasional foes in town, but it is a place full of family, friends, and love, and they can face anything together.
A slightly salty take on North and fandom
Disclaimer: Nothing in this post is meant as an attack on anyone. Fandom is subjective and you have the right to interpret media, form your own conclusions, and create whatever you want. These are my opinions about what I’ve seen, as well as my experiences in previous fandoms and the patterns I’ve seen play out over and over again. It’s okay to disagree with me, and it’s okay to have a respectful discussion in reblogs/comments! Just keep it civil. That out of the way…
North. She’s polarizing character in DBH; she tends to be loved or hated, and I’ll admit it: I didn’t like her at first either. I wanted to, but as I played through my first time I just couldn’t get past one of her traits in particular, which was that she was so convinced she was right; she blamed Markus for every mistake, refused to adapt her tactics or consider other methods, and seemed more driven by vengeance than anything else. So as much as I wanted to enjoy her character, I found her to be a poorly written “strong female character” archetype that fell flat in execution, as most characters of that type do.
Honestly, I think this is the reason most people who dislike North dislike her, at least consciously. They genuinely think she’s a terribly written character, and they’re not necessarily wrong. One playthrough on a standard route, with no extrapolation or extra consideration, combined with a lot of people getting the awkwardly forced romance (I actually avoided this, completely unknowingly, on my first playthrough) leads to a dislike of this character. That’s understandable! I would expect this from people who played the game once. But that’s where the problem comes in, for me.
People active in a fandom usually haven’t consumed the media they’re into just once. They usually don’t engage in surface-level interpretation, and they usually don’t lack context. But I find it hard to believe that so many of the opinions and interpretations regarding North could possibly come from people who have approached her character with an open mind and additional information, because just one major path divergence shows a completely different side to North’s character.
I’m talking, of course, about North’s leader route. When we see her in Markus’ role, leading instead of advising, her true motives come out: she loves her people and is willing to fight for them. She isn’t interested in playing nice with her oppressors, and why should she? There’s a whole discussion here about how oppressed people are judged for how nicely they fight for the rights they should already have, where there’s a ‘good’ way of protesting and a ‘bad’ way of doing it (which is, ironically and showing how tone-deaf Cage can be, supported in the narrative of DBH as well), but I won’t go into that in depth; other people have posted really good takes on this already. I’ll just mention it here and there where relevant.
Once of those relevant places is that, as I said, in North’s leader route she isn’t interested in peaceful protesting. And you know what? When I played this game the first time and had Markus, I had been peaceful up until Night of Soul, which is where North would be making her first major decision as a leader if you don’t have Markus. Yet when it came down to it I made the same decision with Markus that North makes on her own, because you know, as a Jewish woman, I wasn’t super interested in peacefully protesting at the gates of camps that were currently killing people. Playing nice hadn’t worked, and it was time to fight.
So maybe I’m in a different position that some others when it comes to interpreting North’s choices, and as I saw that she made the same choice that I did when playing Markus, I’m just… Not impressed that the fandom tendency to criticize this choice as warmongering, unreasonable, and a ‘betrayal’ of Markus’ peaceful actions (always assuming that Markus had been completely peaceful before, which is the way the story pushes on you, but certainly isn’t a given.) As far as I’m concerned, North is taking the action needed to save her people who are in danger right that instant, and humans don’t deserve a nice civil protest (and if I were in her position with Markus alive, I would be furious that he wanted to just sit and talk while people were dying.) They need to be stopped, and she’s going to stop them.
But it wasn’t just her choice in the church that brought me around to North’s side during her leader route, it was her behavior during Crossroads. Specifically, it was her behavior toward Connor, and how it contrasted with some of her actions earlier. So, going back a bit to Spare Parts, where the Jericrew goes on a mission to steal parts from the Cyberlife warehouses at the docks, and you run into John. North votes against taking him with them, citing that they can’t trust him and it’s too dangerous. Moving on a little, to Stratford Tower, if (or, more likely, ‘when’ since it’s pretty difficult to avoid) Simon is injured, North suggests shooting him. These are pretty harsh marks against her, because they seem needlessly ruthless, but are they really?
With John, the answer is maybe yes. But think about it from her perspective; they’ve never seen the ability Markus used, in turning an android deviant. So as far as North is concerned, John was a threat to them about two minutes earlier, and now wants to go with them? With no traumatic catalyst or trusted android vouching for and giving him the key to Jericho? To North John is a potential threat, a potential danger, and she has no reason to trust him. But as the story goes on, North never makes another objection to an android joining them in this way, because she knows they’re truly deviant. As soon as an android is deviant, they’re one of her people.
With Simon, the answer is probably no, because North is exactly right; if Simon lives, and Connor finds him, Connor finds Jericho. It’s that simple, and it’s not a rare series of events. North might be a little fast to jump on the option, because there’s a genuine argument to be made that it isn’t worth killing someone just because there’s a chance that something (even something very serious) might go wrong, but she clearly isn’t choosing this option because she wants it; she’s choosing this option because she thinks it’s the most guaranteed way to protect her people. It’s a difficult, ruthless decision to make, but it isn’t one made out of malice.
(It’s also worth noting that Simon suggests leaving North when she’s in danger in Crossroads, when the only people that would be at risk from saving her were Markus and Connor, and this happens whether or not North suggested killing Simon one the rooftop. Yet this choice is almost never criticized, because it comes from Simon, and I’ll get into that later.)
But with those particular attitudes from North out of the way, it’s interesting to see how she reacts to Connor in her leader route. North instantly shows concern for him, never blames him for the attack on Jericho, and—like Markus—tries to prevent him from going on his suicide mission to Cyberlife Tower. She’s kind and understanding, and it’s clear that she accepts Connor immediately as one of her people.
This is a place where I have some trouble with fandom interpretations of North and Connor’s relationship, specifically in terms of North being angry, cold, or extremely suspicious of Connor (a little suspicion, especially in a more ‘good end’ route where she has less direct interaction with Connor during the revolution, is reasonable; I’m talking about outright refusal to even consider accepting him.) It bothers me for two specific, and somewhat different reasons.
One is that it directly contradicts a theme of North’s history, which is that deviant androids are not their pasts. They’re not what they were before they woke up. The idea of North holding someone’s past, before they turned deviant, against them is just… I can’t imagine it. I can imagine her suspicion, as I mentioned before, until she's very sure Connor is truly deviant, but that seems very apparent to her right away in any route (I find it hard to believe she’d think he was faking deviancy after delivering the army to Markus.) Some concern or suspicion after finding out about the attempted hijacking makes sense, but the way I see it portrayed in fic is often jarring; it seems completely out of character for her to blame Connor for something like that, as opposed to being angry on his behalf, because North wants androids to be free (and, more deeply, she’s experience being used for something she never wanted.) She wants androids to have the chance to live, to become their own people, and to leave their pasts behind them. Why would she blame Connor for what he was made to do, whether before he was deviant or when Amanda tried to take control of him? It goes against everything North stands for, and that leads me to my second reason:
I think people choose this interpretation because it makes North a villain. Maybe it’s not an active conscious decision to do this (and in fact I doubt it usually is), but it reminds me very painfully of the trend in fandom of villainizing a character—especially a female character—in order to woobify a male character (and, often, get the female character out of the way of a ship) and I can’t help but see that here. It seems like a cheap, easy way to excuse other characters turning against North for her behavior, and therefore getting her out of the way as well as causing drama and conflict for the characters the writer really wants to focus on.
And that seems like a good segue into the big topic that people are gonna get mad about being called out on: misogyny. And even more specifically, misogyny when it comes to shipping.
I’m just gonna state this super clearly at the forefront: I have no problem with shipping whoever you want, whyever you want. I’m not personally into most ships for various reasons, but I do have some favorites (most of which other people aren’t into) and shipping is fun! Not everyone agrees on shipping, and that’s okay; not everyone has to like what you like, we can all still exist in harmony.
But that isn’t to say that people don’t engage in, for lack of a better word, ‘problematic’ behavior in their ships. As opposed to just going ‘hey, I like this, I’m gonna do it’, way too many people become obsessed with justifying their ship (and I think this comes from an underlying desire to ‘prove’ it’s canon or based in canon, as a way of making it seem more legitimate, which is a whole other topic I could rant about.) In the process of these justifications, and then often as a part of the fixation or obsession that some people develop about their ships/characters in their ships, any character or ship that ‘threatens’ someone’s favorite is a target that must be destroyed. And, in what I would say is arguably the vast majority of times, that threatening character is a canon female love interest.
Open bashing has (with good reason) gone out of fashion in fandom, so the way to get characters ‘out of the way‘ is to argue an unlikeable interpretation of them. I feel like this is what happens a lot of the time with North, and with the poor writing and flat portrayal of her character in the ‘good end’ route, it’s very easy for people to take the worst of her personality, say it’s canon, and then get rid of her. This is usually a bit side-eye worthy when it happens in any fandom, but it’s extra ridiculous in DBH for one very distinct reason:
North doesn’t have to be a love interest. As I mentioned before, when I first played through I never got the ‘lovers’ scene, because North said way back when Markus first met her that she didn’t want to talk about her past and so in the scene on the roof I just didn’t ask her (and I could write another whole discussion about how no means no and pressuring someone to tell you their past is NOT how to get a romantic option with them, but that’s an issue with another time.) The rest of the game progressed completely as normal, with the only changes being a lack of kissing options in a few later scenes. There’s no reason why fic writers can’t just choose this option for their fic’s canon, and move on.
And yet I can’t tell you how many times North is an obstacle that has to be overcome in order to get Markus with Simon or Connor (because let’s be real, North, Simon, and Connor are the only major ships for Markus even though Josh is RIGHT THERE, but again that’s another topic for another time.) It’s completely unnecessary, and yet there it is: North is this unreasonable, horrible person who is terrible to [insert love interest here] and Markus has to overcome this internal struggle to break free and be with [whoever] and truly be happy.
It’s such nonsense. It’s using this ‘undesirable’ female character as a source of drama and angst for this poor sad male character to have to deal with, as opposed to taking even a moment to treat the female character as a person who might have motivations, experiences, and emotions, and I’ve seen this over and over and over in every single fandom I’ve ever been in. This isn’t a North-specific thing, it’s a female character thing, and honestly if Kara’s storyline weren’t so separate from the fandom favorite shipping characters then I think the same thing would happen to her (as opposed to her existence just being entirely ignored.) This is such a pattern in fandom that I find it very difficult to believe this is a special case where it’s somehow legitimate.
One of those reasons is that the ‘justifications’ for disliking North tend to be complete double standards between North and whatever love interest the writer is going for, whether that’s Simon or Connor. With Connor, it’s extremely obvious; almost all of North’s negative traits are traits he has to some extent as well (ruthlessness, solving problems through violence, stubbornness,) but those traits are not only not usually treated negatively in Connor (and instead are depicted as justified and necessary in context, which I’m not saying they aren’t, but that it’s unfair to say that about him and not her) but often erased entirely, leading to the obnoxiously delicate, wilting flower version of Connor that shows up in so much fic. But again, an issue for another time.
For Simon, it’s less obvious because North and Simon are quite different, but not in opposite ways; North and Josh are opposites in many respects, but Simon is, in a sense, perpendicular to the line North and Josh are at opposite ends of. Simon doesn’t have particularly strong opinions about anything, just going with the flow and being supportive; his strongest opinions are about being cautious and not taking risks. Except, of course, for that scene I mentioned before, where he outright says they should just leave North to die. For such an overall bland character, that needlessly harsh moment stands out to me and I find it kind of amazing how it’s just completely ignored, often while holding it against North that she suggested shooting Simon on the roof.
So I guess the whole point of this rant is that I wish people would think more critically about North as a character, rather than a flat archetype, especially in the context of shipping. It’s cringey and painful to see blatant flanderizing of her character for the sole purpose of being ‘able’ to ship other characters together, whether to use her as an antagonist or just to get her out of the way, when it’s completely unnecessary to begin with. It’s also very obvious where someone’s priorities and biases lie when they’re happy to write North off but then obsess over other poorly written, bland, or even outright purposefully antagonistic characters that they deem somehow to have more potential and be more worthy of attention and character development.
Overall, there’s no requirement to like a character. It’s totally fine not to like a character. But double standards and needless demonizing of a character go far beyond not liking them, and it’s important to stop and think about why it might be happening. Is it always misogyny with North? No, I don’t think so, there are definitely people who don’t like her for her traits and that’s fine. But I think it’s very telling when someone who claims to dislike North for her personality and behavior then spends time in fan works purposefully making her a villain for the benefit of drama in their pet ship. It’s even more telling when someone who claims to dislike North for her personality and behavior, yet they celebrate the potential of characters that are canonically far worse (but who just so happen to be attractive men.) And, unfortunately, both of those situations coincide quite often with vocally disliking North, and there are only so many ways to interpret such a correlation.
