#sorry just need to vent for a minute so.#i have been pursuing an editor position for 4 months. been very hyped up/fairly confident i could get it/etc bc it’s entry level#only for them to go radio silent on me for a month and when i ask for an update they tell me i should start looking for other positions#(i have been and i have a part time $15/hour tutoring job lined up)#but the job market is so fucking frustrating!!! overqualified for jobs like retail/food service and ghosted or immediately rejected#for every other job (including some of the ‘basic’ stuff!! having a bachelors does not overqualify me working at target!!)#and for entry level jobs that require prior experience: WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?!#i have a college degree. internship experience. work experience. but none of it is ever ‘right for the position’#so. WHAT. DO. YOU. WANT.#how do i get a job when i’m underqualified for my field and overqualified for basic jobs#i have bills i need to pay and $15 per sporadic tutoring session doesn’t cut it#and i’m lucky i got that job. don’t get me wrong i’m very appreciative#but i need a fucking full time job and nobody will give me one!#also need my parents to lay off. i appreciate the sentiment but hearing i didn’t get the job and immediately asking what my next move is#is not helpful. i need to be upset for awhile. i really wanted this job so i’m rather upset and i can’t fully deal bc i’m in a public place#and won’t be home/somewhere private for several days.#and even then i don’t have a lock on my door and i know my parents will be asking#so i’m just…burnt out. i need space. i need a day to rot and be left absolutely alone#anyways. back to your regularly scheduled programming#i gotta go move my brother into college and then i’m gonna rot for a few days i think

is copywriting a good job to look into as a writer? im job hunting and i see quite a few openings online but im worried the work will be extremely dreary
i didnt set out to be a copywriter -- frankly when i graduated i had no idea what i wanted to do. i spent about three and a half years freelancing and doing gig work and i'd make like 140 bucks a month on a good year. i happened to apply for a copywriting job among a sea of other entry level things -- social media coordinator, communications associate etc. and i feel SOOOOO fucking blessed that i fell into copywriting
in terms of money: copywriting is very lucrative if you get the experience for it and stay the course. my very first position with no prior copywriting experience (just freelance writing experience) paid me 35/hr. starting off you'll probably make about 50k but moving up the hierarchy can pay a LOT. with four years of experience, during my job hunt i would say the vast majority of the positions i interviewed were within a six figure salary band. moving up the hierarchy, lots of senior copywriters make six figs, and some associate creative directors make over 200k. you can definitely live comfortably as a career copywriter if you play your cards right.
in terms of work: personally i love copywriting, but it's an arm of marketing. if you cant stomach writing marketing materials or learning how marketing works, it might not be for you, but i kinda make it into a game in my head. there's a lot of different kinds of copy -- short form (landing pages, social media blurbs, headlines, emails, product descriptions etc) and long form (white papers, SEO articles/blog posts, ebooks). i would aim to find a copywriting position that will have a wide scope of copy types, because that helps cultivate a well-rounded resume (i.e. shoot for a job that'll have you writing landing pages, emails and blog posts etc over one that's just headlines and captions).
there is also B2C (business to customer, as in marketing a consumer product to individuals) and B2B (business to business, as in marketing a product like mailchimp to a business). i mostly do B2C, but I also do B2B now. it's fine to start with just one, but i'd say right now demand is very high for B2B
the good thing about copywriting is that basically any industry requires it in some capacity. i've worked predominantly in entertainment and digital media, but right now i'd say the biggest demand is in healthcare, fintech and SaaS (software). i freelance for a telehealth company right now in part because i want to make my portfolio more well-rounded. but as i said, nearly any industry can need one -- hospitality, beauty, fashion, retail, nonprofits, anything that is a business that needs to be advertised. when i started, i worked in television, which meant my days largely consisted of watching shows before air and writing episode descriptions. i had a lot of fun!
personally, i dont find my work dreary. sometimes it can be a LITTLE tedious if i'm writing something more technical/internal, but the whole point of copywriting is to figure out how to entice someone to check something out, which means puzzling out how to write something fun and engaging. if you want something less marketing-focused, i would look into getting into technical writing. this is basically writing informational texts and guides for technology and similar things. it pays VERY well and is usually in high demand, but i will say it's definitely more tedious than copywriting.
in short: yes i love copywriting and you can be very financially stable in it! i'd argue it's one of the most financially comfortable day jobs for someone with writing experience. happy hunting anon!!!! i hope u get what ur after

and then theres me thinking i fucked myself over in my teens 😭 i’m about to graduate college and i have never had a job before. everyone my age were getting part time jobs and stuff when we were like 15-16 and that was around the time i got pretty sick, and then i had to focus on education to ensure i could get to college, then in my first year covid happened and because of said prior illness i literally couldnt go outside much for years. now i’m so scared no one will ever hire me like why does every job require so much experience Help a guy out 😭😭
honestly i know everyone says this but . fake it till you make it, man. one of the key things to remember about jobs - esp when you're looking at seemingly entry level positions - is that the experience requirements function as preliminary vetting tools, but they're often not stone-cold necessities. there's a lot that can Look like skills and assets that would serve a job well without necessarily being employment experience. extracurriculars and scholastic achievements can be explained in ways that highlight your abilities - have you done anything that speaks to cooperative teamwork, solid communication, organisational mindsets, time efficiency, general responsibility, etc ?
the hardest part can be securing an interview, but once you've made it to that point, it's about selling yourself and what you bring to the table. and those assets don't have to be from prior employment! i would just advise that you not let the experience requirement prevent you from applying to positions. it's not gonna be what makes or breaks your chance, at the very least

Can I still get a job in cybersecurity with little to no experience?
Dion Training - Weekly Digest
In today’s job market, it’s not uncommon for people to graduate from college or even obtain a master’s degree and still have no experience in their field of study. This can lead to a lot of frustration and anxiety when it comes to finding a good job. The question remains, “is it still possible to score a good job with no experience?”" In this blog post, we’ll explore different strategies to help you get hired even if you lack experience.
First and foremost, it’s important to be aware that having a master’s degree may not necessarily work in your favor when it comes to landing an entry-level job. Frequently, employers may see a master’s degree and assume that the candidate is overqualified for the position, or that they will demand a higher salary. This can sometimes work against you when you’re just starting out in your career.
One strategy to counter this is to focus on obtaining certifications rather than advanced degrees. In some fields, certifications are becoming more valuable than traditional degrees. For example, in the field of cybersecurity, having a Security+ certification can be a great way to get your foot in the door, even if you don’t have any prior experience. This is because certifications demonstrate that you have the knowledge and skills to perform a specific job, without requiring years of experience. To find out which certifications are most valuable in your field, it’s important to do your research. Check job postings and see what qualifications are listed. Look at the required and recommended certifications and try to obtain them.
Another way to gain experience is through internships. While internships may not pay as well as full-time jobs, they can provide valuable hands-on experience that can help you land a job later on. Many internships also offer networking opportunities, which can help you make valuable connections in your industry. Networking is another important aspect of job hunting. Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and connect with people in your field on LinkedIn. These connections can provide insight into the job market, as well as potential job leads.
In addition to networking, it’s important to tailor your job search to the specific job you’re applying for. Customize your resume and cover letter to the job posting, highlighting the skills and qualifications that the employer is looking for. This will increase your chances of getting noticed by the hiring manager. Don’t be afraid to start at the bottom. Even if you don’t get the job you were hoping for, take an entry-level position in your field and work your way up. Gain as much experience as you can and be open to learning new skills. Showing initiative and a willingness to learn can impress employers and lead to more opportunities down the road.
You can also gain plenty of “experience” through the use of resources like Try Hack Me, a website with various walkthroughs and scenarios for you to try out. You can practice firewall and map scanning skills and even participate in capture-the-flag challenges. It’s a great way to showcase your abilities while learning more about the field. You can refer to this experience in interviews because while it may not be traditional “experience” it still shows that you are resourceful and that you are willing to learn.
Another thing to keep in mind is that getting hired isn’t just about technical skills. Hiring managers also look for a cultural fit, which means they want to hire people who share the company’s values and work well with others. So when you’re interviewing, be sure to present yourself in the best possible light. Remember, even if you have all the technical skills in the world, you need to know how to market yourself effectively in order to land that job.
Finally, be patient and persistent. Finding a job can take time, especially if you’re just starting out. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get the first job you apply for. Keep applying, keep networking, and keep improving your skills. With persistence, hard work, and a little luck, you can land the job of your dreams, even if you have little to no experience.

MAN'S GOTTA' DREAM
On the back of the milestones I mentioned last entry, I was able to come so far that I was confident and lucky enough to take some huge steps towards my career aspirations.
All the factors I have mentioned and practices I’ve put in place through my first five entries came into play and combined to help open so many more doors than I even had access to before starting my internships.
For example, at the start of this year, I had set myself a goal and dream to commentate footy and begin to pursue a career in sports broadcasting after thoroughly enjoying the sports broadcasting subject and mentoring with Brett Phillips last year. However, I never even could begin to comprehend doing what I ended up doing, earlier this year, prior to my internships and big journey, I just thought I’d call the odd game for the VAFA, volunteering on their live stream platforms. Little did I know I would end up calling the entire second half of the season for SEN radio, getting paid to broadcast my home league the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition (WGFNC), a dream of mine. This simply would not have been possible without the learnings I got from doing my internships, the belief in myself I had built after working and thriving in the professional space, allowed me to back myself in and take a huge step in my journey towards my career dreams. By the end of the year, I was co-hosting the coverage and was the co-main caller for the WGFNC Grand Final, which my home club won, a day I will never forget in my career.
Here's a video, I made for an assignment, with highlights from the game and the call notes I took the night prior. I got a D on this assignment from Dav.
youtube
Tumblr media
(Box, 2023)
As for further goals from here, I now aspire to take on any role with confidence and know that I will absolutely adjust to whatever work environment and culture I’m faced with and do the required tasks to the best of my ability. My plan is to look to embark on an entry-level role to gain as much experience as I can, as I am aware that regardless of how much I have learnt and how far I’ve come, I am still a fresh face a ‘rookie’ in the industry. My goal is to land this entry-level job and continue commentating through the WGFNC season next year to ensure I am still sharpening my craft in that area as it is the one I have the greatest aspirations to end up in as a long-term career. I am happy to take this slowly though as I realise broadcasting is much like playing the game itself, you don’t wake up and become Lance Franklin overnight, years of work must be applied to the craft and that’s exactly what I plan to do. I am eternally grateful for my experience at Rainmaker which has shown me and opened my eyes to the back end of sports production, which is invaluable to any sports broadcaster, there’s not a single sporting broadcast I watch or listen to know where I am not thinking about how it’s being produced or pointing out any errors, or good little titbits. Because of this, and how highly I value the production side, along with how much I enjoyed it, I definitely see myself working in production down the track and would love to return to SEN/Rainmaker to do so. Ultimately, my goal to is gain as much knowledge as I can in a 5-10-year period along with growing my connection base and reputation to eventually go into freelancing when I feel I’m best qualified, and travel the world taking broadcasting, production, or media jobs at different events.
These goals, although lofty and potentially far-fetched, are vital to my career as planning out a career and setting goals have been proven to deeply impact the welfare and success of youths both through their schooling and in the workforce (Choi et al., 2015). As a transitioning university graduate, this is really interesting and important to me as I value mental planning and goal setting very highly and this is also backed by research by Villares and Brigman (2018) who found it to be an essential factor in the success of a graduate’s early career.
