#MusicMonday Review - December 2022

#MusicMonday is the hashtag I've been using for quite a while to share music recommendations from up-and-coming artists. Always fresh, and always different, trying to look for trends before they become one. You can check November's review for more music.

Welcome to the last #MusicMonday of the year! Let's have a recap of the most popular genres of the year with some cool tracks, and a word from the artists themselves. 🎧

"I started writing the song just as the first lockdown happened, I was up in Nottingham by myself away from the rest of the boys and the only thing I could do was write.

Thematically the biggest inspiration for the song was influencer culture. I was seeing pictures of these love island contestants getting spat out onto club circuits and they all had nothing behind the eyes and looked miserable. A lot of it is about describing the experience and trying to show how quickly you can get it and how quickly it can be taken away."

TOP 07: PIECES OF MEDIA THAT ARE A POPULAR PHENOMENON EVERYWHERE... MINUS THE U.S

So lets be real: the U.S is acostumed to be the most influencial media exporter since the end of World War II. Its just expected that we, people from the outside, know mainly U.S American Pop Culture.

But there have always been the rule breakers, the pieces of Pop Culture from outside the U.S that for several factors, ended up becoming a phenomenon, aclaimed by public and critics, homaged in fan works, with important influential legacies in several countries... except, ironically in the U.S, that while exporting its culture to other parts of the world, rarely does the inverse of importing, favouring the consume of its own media.

So in no particular order, here are seven pieces of media that, while phenomenons in other parts of the Globe, never got popular in the land of Uncle Sam.

01. The Asterix the Gaul Franchise

Originating in France as comic books created by Renee Gosciny and Albert Uderzo, expanding into animated and live-action movies, the success of this adventure comedy series about irredutible celtic warriors who protect their village against the Roman invasions thanks to a druid's magic potion, flavoured with lots of anacronism based humour, had its success expanded to other European Countries, Canada and Latin America. In Gringoland tough? It may be sold, but under cheap price to Francobelgian Comic Geeks, precisely because isn't as popular as the Marvel and DC Superheroes.

02. Mafalda

Created by argentinian comic artist Joaquin Salvador Llavado (Quino), the Mafalda comic strips ran from 1964 to 1973, being adapted into several animated TV shorts and an animated movie. Mafalda was a very curious child who constantly asked dificult questions about the world, the society and its politics, for the despair of her parents who didn't knew how to answer her questions and didn't want to admit it. 03. Chespirito

The mexican writer and comedian Roberto Gomez Bolanos, nicknamed Chespirito (spanish for Little Shakespeare) created several characters for TV shows and movies, the most famous being the orphan boy El Chavo del Ocho, the superheroe El Chapulin Colorado and the bumbling medic Doctor Chapatin. Fusing humour with pathos and social commentary about the reality of Latin America, having his shows to fellow Latam countries (minus Cuba), Europe and Asia, when Chespirito died, millions of people from Latam camed to Mexico to be present at his funeral, paying the last homage to show much he meant to them! His shows, that also got expanded into comics and cartoons, made us laugh with joy and cry with emotion. But in the U.S, he is seem as a simple exotic curiosity, as that "campy show where adults dressed as kids".

04. Pedro Almodovar Movies

With a career that goes back to the 1980s, the spanish filmaker Pedro Almodovar presented to audiences movies that, ocasionally bluring the line between fiction and reality, but rarely in a way that gets too complicated for viewers to undersant, mixed drama and comedy to tell the complicated lifes and relationships of cistraight women and lgbtq people, exploring with naturalness themes that society deems as tabu. They released some names that are now well known to Hollywood, like Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz, but still they are rarely seem and talked about by U.S American audiences.

05. Saint Seiya

A manga and anime franchise created in 1986 by Masami Kurumada, Shingo Araki, Michi Himeno and the team of Toei Animation, the long-runing franchise about warriors who dress armour inspired by constellations to defend the Goddess Athena was a huge hit in Asia, Western Europe and Latin America, helping to spread the otaku comunity in those places. Sadly a marketing mistake that sold a heavily edited and censored version of the series made an atempt to sell the anime to U.S American audiences fail miserably in 2003. Recently, with the Netflix agreement that resulted in the production of a 3-D animated remake and a new dnglish dub to the original 1986 version of the series, some american viewers are discovering Saint Seiya as a kind of cult classic, in contrast to the mainstream toy selling hit it is in the rest of the world.

06. Japanese Tokusatsu Shows

During the 70s, the 80s and the 90s, Japan exported to other Asian countries, Europe and Latam, alongside the manga and anime series, the live action special effects shows known as tokusatsu. Shows like National Kid, Spectre-Man, Fuun Lion Maru, Sekai Ninja Sen Jirayia, and Giban to this day are fondly remembered by those audiences, even receiving homages like a hip-hop song named Lion Man, composed by brazilian rapper Criolo. From the 90s and forward, some of those audiences replaced the original japanese series with the americanized version of Super Sentai called the Power Rangers, but still keep hearing about and being shown the original tokusatsus by their parents. Meanwhile, in the land of Uncle Sam, besides the sci fi fans watching the Godzilla movies, audiences mostly watch the americanized versions of Super Sentai and two seasons of the equally long Kamen Rider franchise, without much curiosity for the original japanese versions.

07. Telenovelas

An heir of the serialized novels where the chapters were published daily on the newspaper, than going to radio and finally getting with all force into television, telenovelas are TV shows meant to air daily (monday to saturday), with duration on the air varying usually between six or eight months. Their plots are mostly drama and romance driven, but comedy and elements of social comentary appear in the subplots to balance things out for such a long time of exibition. Telenovelas are produced in parts of Africa, Europe and Asia, but is in Latin America that they are pratically the main cultural product and a patrimony, with Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina being the main producers of telenovelas. In the exportation field, our telenovelas are frequently exchanged between ourselves, along with sellings to África, Europe and Asia. In the U.S, while their are spanish speaking channels that exibit latam telenovelas for the hispanic comunity of California and Florida, most of the country consumes the american made soap operas, writen to air without an ending in mind, with several seasons, no different from the series. Besides some memes and react videos that select out of context scenes to portray telenovelas, again, as campy exotic curiosities, telenovela productions don't get mainstream releases with english dubs or subs for U.S audiences to know their variety of styles, themes and tones, even tough there is a telenovela category in the Emmy Awards.

She entered the Institute of Canossian Daughters of Charity in Venice, Italy in 1893, taking her vows on 8 December 1896 in Verona, Italy and serving as a Canossian Sister for the next fifty years. Her gentle presence, her warm, amiable voice, and her willingness to help with any menial task were a comfort to the poor and suffering people who came to the door of the Institute. After a biography of her was published in 1930, she became a noted and sought after speaker, raising funds to support missions.

Her feast has been designated the International Day of Prayer to Stop Human Trafficking.

About a year ago, Michi already once made a great post about the most likely meaning inside of the kanji’s comforming Reira’s name and after some small discovery I wanted to share this possibility about the romanization of it

Layra, or much more possible: Layla (Because no, Layra as name does not exist and Layla does, also the endless discussion of the L and R in Japanese)

There’s not a huge deal to the meaning of the name which has Hebrew origins meaning simply “night”.

Oh, and also it’s the name of an angel.

Granted an angel that is only mentioned in later Jewish mythology and some interpretations of the Talmud, but Lailah (original spelling) has the particularity of being the only angel who regardless of later interpretations of other angels, has a distinctively feminine name (the –lah is feminine, rather than the usual –el for almost all other angels) and also given feminine attributes.

The duty of this angel had to do with Conception, guiding the seed of the human into the womb and then becoming a full person, is also mentioned that Lailah chooses an embryo where the soul should be deposited upon birth and become its guardian angel.

But most of all the thing that stuck to me was how there has been discussion that while the noun of the word is feminine, being Hebrew grammatical gender does not equal actual gender; and that there is some discussion that the word has a dualist nature that combines masculine with feminine character, where the feminine layla and masculine leyl make night: "to indicate the union which took place on that night between the Masculine and Feminine aspects in the Divine attributes."

·         Because of the En Cards, particularly the En Moon card, both times this happened it was during the night.

Alright real talk, I'm not liking one bit of Zack Sabre Jr.'s kayfabe story in New Japan. Lemme be clear- Suzuki-gun has been in existence in New Japan longer than Zack has been with the goddamn company. The faction has showed up across different promotions, and is run by a freelancer who will wrestle everyone and everything, including but not limited to- men, women, rookies, kaijuu, and what have you. Minoru Suzuki is arguably the top draw of the faction as he is... Minoru fucking Suzuki. Everyone else in the faction is either a loyal brother or son or fan, and we are all.... Suzuki-gun. The faction is arguably the only faction in New Japan that is truly heel, and it works because Misu is top dog and his brothers and sons are, essentially, his family. Where he goes, they go, and whenever he needs them... they're there. They're ready to throw down at literally a moment's notice, and nothing gets a crowd more heated than when Taichi's fucking with a babyface in order to help out Misu.

Now, I get Sabre Jr. is new to the promotion. Not only that, he didn't exactly have anyone to teach him the ropes that quickly before the G1, so to put him in a steady faction like Suzuki-gun was essentially the best way to get him assimilated into the promotion and get used to its style and kayfabe storytelling. It made perfect sense for Desperado to corner for him throughout the entirety of the 27th G1. He's the baby of the family, essentially their shogun's newest child, Desperado had to look after him because thiw family's ride or die. It was perfect storytelling throughout the whole summer. Desperado had Zack's back every match, and Zack did what he could during their tag bouts, but most of the caretaking was largely performed by El Desperado.

Now this is where it gets fucked up, and why Gedo better get it the fuck together before I sue his ass for misrepresentation. A whole portion of this year's Destruction tour was getting Suzuki-gun back into the larger storyline in New Japan, since they swapped them out for LIJ after Misu won the NEVER title, and to showcase enough of the LIJ bonds in time for Naito's victory at the G1 Climax. A lot of people, including myself, have had doubts about where Suzuki-gun's headed because Misu's not 40 anymore. He's not 35, he's not even 45. He's legit aboutta turn fifty, he's lost a lot of weight over the years, and we can see that he's getting worn down. We can see it in how he plans out his matches, how he performs with outside weaponry and interference, and how he takes and executes strikes and grapples in his matches. He's strong and healthy, but he's still a victim to time like we all are. He can't keep going forever, and eventually, the shogun's gonna have to move into a more administrative post and position a new heavyweight representative in the faction.

And unfortunately, it seems like Zack's gonna be the one groomed for the position.

First things first, I have nothing against Zack Sabre Jr. He's a great wrestler, very interesting to watch, but for the life of me, I don't understand what the fuck he's doing in Suzuki-gun. Part of the narrative of Suzuki-gun is that these men follow Misu because they're lacking something within themselves and find peace, find familiarity and comfort in being Misu's brother or son. Desperado's recent interview was one of the sweetest promos he's produced in his tenure in the faction, because it just comes off so... honest. Suzuki-gun is for life. Shelton Benjamin, despite being in WWE, is still Suzuki-gun. Takayama will never wrestle again but he is, for life, Suzuki-gun. That's how the faction is set up in the kayfabe. They're the family that ride or die into the sunset. There's no hesitation here.

What happened in Hiroshima a few days ago had me heated for several reasons. One- booking Suzuki-gun includes booking all of Suzuki-gun. Because Suzuki-gun is a steady stable. Their members are brought into the fold personally, you don't apply for a bloody position. Having Michi come out to just slap the mat in the corner does nothing because that's how you book the other stables. Facing a member of Suzuki-gun means facing all of Suzuki-gun. So I did not, for my life, understand why in Fukushima you had the Killer Elite Squad and Uncle Iizuka roll out after hours to push Misu to victory... but in Hiroshima, you booked Michi to do nothing while Kushida broke Desperado's arm and Back to the Future'd him into submission.

And yet, in that same night in Hiroshima, almost the entirety of the faction came out to help Zack.

I am pissed. Y'all could say whatever you want about the faction being a joke because it's just “Misu and the jobbers,” but Michi literally has his own promotion and just put on a supercard show to celebrate his own damn anniversary as a wrestler, Taichi's good because he's tight with both Misu and Michi, Kanemaru is a junior heavyweight legend outside of New Japan, Shelton Benjamin is another legend, KES are a credible threat in the tag division, Takayama is the Emperor, Desperado is an underdog, and Zack is basically the darling of technical wrestling. No one in the faction is an actual jobber, and to presume as such is straight disrespect and I hope y'all have nightmares about Misu chasing you around in a haunted forest with Taichi's microphone cane if you think this kind of disrespect is warranted.

But I digress- Suzuki-gun is an army of men (and women, because Miho and Ayumi Nakamura are very much Suzuki-gun) who live and breathe the creed. They can throw down when appropriate, and back off when they have to. Gedo booked two amazing Suzuki-gun storms during Misu/Elgin and Sabre Jr./Tanahashi.... and yet Gedo refused to book it into Desperado/Kushida. Taichi and Kanemaru, even tho they lost to Funky Future, at least had each other to depend on, but they booked Michi, and independent legend in his own right, to just valet in the corner while Desperado got bodied.

Bruh. Bruh!!!

ALL I'M GONNA SAY IS THIS- Suzuki-gun aint no fuckin joke, and if Gedo don't get his shit the fuck together, I have no problems pretending Sabre Jr. doesn't exist in the faction. Sabre Jr has yet to appropriately storm someone outta no where on behalf of the faction. Maybe Hiroshima wasn't the best time because he was main eventing against one of the best wrestlers of our generation, but I got my eyes on him. Gedo booked almost the whole faction and its leader to come out and support Zack. They just had Michi escort Desperado out after he pretty much got his ass handed to him.

If Zack Sabre Jr. don't storm Kushida, or whoever the fuck Desperado aboutta feud with soon, then he out. He's cancelled- deleted! If he doesn't participate in the next round of group beatdowns, he's not invited to the cookouts anymore! Gedo can't act like we don't see what he's doing with New Japan, with all the international white talent dropping into the ranks while native wrestlers are watching this shit like “hm.” You can't fuck with the head booker, but the head booker better remember that it’s Kazuchika Okada who's the reigning Ace, not Kenneth Omega. He better remember that Kushida already bodied William Ospreay enough times to never have to agree to a match with him ever again, and yet, our boy might have to wrestle him yet again. We see you, Gedo. We know why you're doing it, but don't think, for a second, that viewers and wrestlers alike aint takin notes.

Tl;dr: Zack Sabre Jr is officially on the shitlist. I don't give a fuck if he graduated to official membership in the squad because he got the black-and-white Suzuki-gun gear, you not Suzuki-gun if you aint reppin yer boys in a group beatdown. You not Suzuki-gun if you not comin outta nowhere and smacking a mothafucka with a clipboard and choking him out with a steel chair just to buy your fellow Suzuki-gun mate some time. Zack been coddled enough. It's time to square up, or drop the Suzuki-gun name, cuz what we not aboutta do, is give this boy some merch to rep while he don't do shit for its members who are clearly struggling in the booking department.

Either book Zack the way Suzuki-gun has always been booked, or put him somewhere else. We not here to play games. Born to a wealthy Sudanese family, she was kidnapped by slave-traders at age 9, and given the name Bakhita (lucky) by them. Sold and resold in the markets at El Obeid and Khartoum, finally purchased in 1883 by Callisto Legnani, Italian consul who planned to free her. She accompanied Legnani to Italy in 1885, and worked as a nanny for the family of Augusto Michieli. She was treated well in Italy and grew to love the country. An adult convert the Christianity, she joined the Church on 9 January 1890, she took the name of Josephine as a symbol of her new life.

She entered the Institute of Canossian Daughters of Charity in Venice, Italy in 1893, taking her vows on 8 December 1896 in Verona, Italy and serving as a Canossian Sister for the next fifty years. Her gentle presence, her warm, amiable voice, and her willingness to help with any menial task were a comfort to the poor and suffering people who came to the door of the Institute. After a biography of her was published in 1930, she became a noted and sought after speaker, raising funds to support missions.

Her feast has been designated the International Day of Prayer to Stop Human Trafficking.

"So jealous", "They're overdoing it" - These Palace fans split on PL rivals' spending spree

Crystal Palace fans on Twitter are split after Premier League rivals Aston Villa look set to continue their big summer spending spree with moves for Bjorn Engels and Douglas Luiz.

While the Eagles’ transfer window has been anything but lively with goalkeeper Stephen Henderson the only arrival to date – and on a free – newly-promoted Villa have been going to town with the additions of Matt Targett, Jota, Ezri Konsa, Wesley, Kortney Hause, Anwar El Ghazi and Tyrone Mings, with the latter three joining on permanent deals following loan spells last term.

Now it appears as though Reims centre-back Engels and Manchester City midfielder Luiz are set to join them at Villa Park, with the duo set to cost £22m.

Given Palace have lost Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Manchester United and Michy Batshuayi back to Chelsea following his temporary spell at Selhurst Park in 2019, you may have expected the south London outfit to be a little more active in terms of incomings.

Some Eagles supporters have been quick to show some envy to the Midlands outfit with one saying “I’m so jealous”, but another approached the situation with a little more caution and said “I think they’re overdoing it, like Fulham”.
