Tomorrow is my birthday (And I’m not joking around) (Dev log #11)

Well, the title isn't lying. Tomorrow is the day I turn the legal drinking age in the US, and the age I'm probably considered too old for Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm not sad about that though, I don't think he aged very well. I'm probably going to celebrate it on Friday though, because I'm not celebrating it alone, moooostly because the friends I'm the closest to are turning 20 this year and the ones that are older than me do not drink because they have trauma from their families. So I guess it's just me and my parents. Tomorrow though I'm going to a shopping center with my bestie. No drinking involved though (or eating cake), apparently I'm currently experiencing health problems.

I think I'm getting withdrawal symptoms from not eating sugar.

Well, I at last finished the last location of the game, and started working on everyone’s sprites like I promised 2 weeks ago. The base sprites for the cashier are done, so now Xandra isn’t staring into the empty scenes alone anymore, although I would imagine them not being too fond of each other, but the Cashier is one of the more forgiving towards her than everyone else who is forced to come along with her (Party Person being the other one).

Anyways, since there is no more music to show you because I reached the number of songs I wanted, I think I’ll just draw scenes from movies and games I’d want to reference, lol. I was thinking of removing this entire section because it's redundant and it's me showing my master's in yapping about my favorite things that's not GASA4AM related because, well, yeah, but I put too much effort in the drawing below so I'm not doing that. And first contender….. Jawbreaker (1999). Now, if you’re under 18, I don’t recommend watching this movie. I have been debating this, mostly because the movie is… contemporary but there is one explicit scene (and it made me very uncomfortable, especially considering why it happened). And there also is at least two that show a (fake) dead body, where they find out the person is dead, and then "dispose" it by manhandling it and making the cops think that she died in... another way, but it looks very disturbing because there is a (fake) jawbreaker stuck in her throat. (I watched the behind the scenes and the girl who played Liz Purr was very much alive when she was playing the character’s corpse, and the jawbreaker was makeup). Buuuut, Kyu is literally named after Kyu Sugardust from the Huniepop series (very explicit game series, I also don't recommend playing that game if you're under 18), and I’m probably just going to reference the beginning and the end of the movie, as in the lines spoken in this movie and not at all what the characters wear and do (nobody is going to manhandle corpses or die from a jawbreaker stuck in their throats. Also no 17th birthdays because I don't even think the GASA4 cast has any birthdays for that matter).

Streamer!Genshin Meeting Character!(Y/n) for the First Time

Characters: Scaramouche, Childe, Albedo, Kaeya, Venti

Scaramouche:

His viewers were constantly requesting that he play this game that’s been out for a little while now that was called Genshin Impact. So he finally gave in to see what all the talk was about

Getting through the tutorial and the first part of the chapter felt so long; visually it was beautiful as the story was pretty decent so far.

It wasn’t until he got to Liyue in the archon quest that things seemed to pick up for him. The character who saved him from almost getting arrested kind of irked him; it reminded him of his one roommate who was a rich kid type.

It wasn’t till the release of the event Unreconciled Stars that once again many of his followers flooded his messages telling him he needed to play the event during his streams so they could see his reaction to meeting a new character.

Curiosity peaked after hearing a bit that the character would be an electro catalyst. Which he started to play it instead of holding off for a few days; honestly he really wasn’t expecting much

It was until he finally saw you appear; he was a bit surprised as you weren’t exactly how he pictured you yet you looked cute but in a cool way? A little more of the interaction he’s a little on the fence on how he feels about you but he was interested in where this event was going, there was something just a little bit… off

Progressing he was a little bit bummed since he thought there would have been a bit more interaction with you. That was until he was back in Mondstadt with Mona who was helping solve this mystery when pleasantly surprised that you’ve showed up. Until Mona seemed to have some sort of revelation that caused her to teleport them all out of there

Needless to say he wasn’t happy that he was taken away from seeing you. “Excuse me you bring me back,” was his initial reaction but continued to watch when it was more clear that you were there to kill him. You were that other harbinger; number six of the fatui harbingers and the moment you snapped at one of the agents, you had instantly become one of his absolute favorites.

Childe:

Though his viewers have been requesting to play the soon released game Genshin Impact he has actually been long awaiting for this game.

To celebrate the release it was going to be a long stream as he’s stocked up on water and energy drinks and snacks. He’s definitely planning to do a giveaway for his viewers (though he won’t bring it up until he finally unlocks the wishing feature)

He enjoyed the plot so far as the conflict with Dvalin has been resolved but now the ameno archon’s gnosis was stolen by some woman who appeared out of nowhere. Soon to learn about the fatui group and their eleven harbingers

Off to Liyue at long last! There’s been chatter of one character that shows up fairly early in the quest and he is very curious to encounter whoever this character was

He was finally at the part where Rex Lapis came crashing down from the sky dead and now was sneaking to get to the exit. Definitely took him a couple of times and in the process of it all he was certainly singing the whole “Don’t be suspicious, don’t be suspicious” song

Finally getting the cutscene where his character gets chased after unfortunately making sound. When things looked like it was going to turn into a fight he was surprised when hearing a new voice say “I got this one sweetie”. His mouth has dropped in pure awe of watching your character flip from above appearing out of thin air as you handled the Millelith with ease

Hearing you say follow me he had such a grin on his face; “Don’t gotta ask me twice I’ll follow you anywhere”. Of course his viewers in chat were raving and just spamming the laughing emote as the cutscene continued in a safe place

Looking at your character model admiring you as the reveal that you were a part of the harbingers but seemed to be rather friendly. “You guys I’m in love. (Y/n) better be a playable character at some point… I’ll be sad if I don’t get to travel the world with them” he says as when he finds out you're rich his initial thought was “So are they going to spoil me or do I get to spoil them? Cuz I really want it to be the second one” He hadn’t known you for long but he already wants to give you the world

Venti:

He was mainly known for his streams where he’ll sing or perform some of the instruments he enjoys and many of the games he’d play were a lot of rhythm games or one of the hilarious simulator games; so for him to pick up Genshin Impact it’s a little outside of the typical games he’ll usually play

He really loves the music so far, if the music wasn’t to his liking he’d probably drop it. Will probably take a moment to just listen to it and talk about what possible instruments used to compose it

After running around the world and looking for chests and whatever materials he saw along the way. He suddenly saw the big dragon fly over head and now making his way to the whispering woods to look for the feathered looking dragon

The cut scene started and there was the dragon on a rock but then he saw you; he doesn’t know anything about you but having seen you in some of the images that the company released he’s been interested in your character!

During your moment with your old friend had was making this face 🥺 but then that was when the snapping sound echoed causing the dragon to freak out and leave in a gust of wind. “Noooo I’m so sorry” he’s shouting at the screen when he watched the expression on your face turn sad before you seemed to just vanish

Has been bummed out since he hadn’t seen your character in a while until he saw you running with a lyre in your hand, he only fell in more love with you as he was running around with you trying to get the holy lyre from the church

Albedo:

It had been a while since more of the story was out but of course he’d play to do his commissions and gather materials he needed, but when his viewers showed him the announcement of the newest section of the map will be released; oh there was a new temperature mechanic that if it was too cold that his characters could freeze to death

Generally that would be fine… but he enjoys stopping and admiring the scenery which he easily gets distracted so he’s probably going to keep forgetting to stand by fire a lot

But the best part of all: they were introducing you, the chief alchemist of the Knights of Favonius. The one that was talked about by so many characters in their voice lines he finally was going to get a face to the name

He was already not liking that the so called ‘nun’ was insinuating that you weren’t trustworthy; the AUDACITY! Sure he hadn’t known your character long but he will defend you wholeheartedly, you have this charismatic to you that he’s just smitten

“If one day, I lose control… Destroy Mondstadt… Destroy everything… Can I rely on you to stop me?” After hearing that last line he needs a minute to take a double take to make sure he heard that correctly. “I swear if this is some sort of indication of something bad happening and I have to fight (y/n) I will not be happy,” he’s saying of course looking to his camera

Kaeya:

So many of his viewers were requesting that he play Genshin Impact as of course it would be a little different from the games he’s played in the past (Ya can’t tell me he wouldn’t have played Huniepop and doki doki literature club), but the idea of attractive characters in the game? He’s sold as the few characters he saw pictures of it seemed promising.

So he starts streaming it and all is going smoothly so far… Until it was time to learn about gliding right before Stormterror attacks and the mini flying fight happened

Once the cutscene starts he’s watching leaning back in his chair a bit until a clapping sound starts and that’s when everyone in chat was losing it and spamming the heart eyes emotes. Seeing you come into the shot he’s got a small little smirk; you were hot. He only seemed to love your character even more after hearing that you were the cavalry captain

When it came time to do your trail quest (which of course was the first one he went to do) he’s very much looking at your design and admiring your charming features. He asks his viewers if he leaves the domain if he gets to keep you or if you were one of the five stars that he’d have to wish for, spoilers don’t really bother him if he really wants to know what happens.

Seeing your summon art once he left he’s ecstatic that you will be forever in his team and once he’s able to he’s going farming so he can build you up

Do you think video games exist in Hell if so who of the main characters would play them & what type of video games would they play

I can’t see a reason why there wouldn’t be video games in Hell. Especially since other forms of entertainment, like TV shows, have already been established. And I think some of the misfits would be really into video games and others not so much. 

As for what kind of video games each one would play, or if they would at all, that would be going more into headcanon territory than speculation but I love me some headcanons so let’s go.

Those that would.

Charlie: I think Charlie would be fascinated with video games, specifically if she got her hands on any that came from Earth. The girl was born and raised in hell, so I’m not sure if she’s ever gotten to see what Earth is like. Anything that can give her and insight into the world most of her people come from, all the different places there are, what they look like, what their cultures are like what people’s lives are like, what stories they have, she would just eat up. And especially with Vaggie by her side to tell her everything she wants to know about them, she would play as many of Earth’s video games as she can. But her absolute favorites would be anything by Disney and anything with something cute in it. Like the Kirby games and Animal Crossing.

Vaggie: I think Vaggie would like video games that have a good story, a unique art style, and clever world-building. Especially if they had a gothic style. Think Alice Into the Madness or Hollow Kight. She would also really like Batman Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and Arkham night. 

Angel Dust: Not many expect it, due to him being from the forties, but Angel actually finds video games to be a lot of fun and he plays them with Cherri all the time. He’s a little embarrassed to admit he only had a vague idea of what video games were until Chrerri introduced them to him properly. Before then, he just thought they were a kind of kids toy. But he’s very much acquainted with them now. He would like Bendy and the Ink Machine, because of the dark twist to the kind of cartoons he used to watch as a kid, and Cuphead would make him feel nice and nostalgic. He wishes there was a gay version of Huniepop or a less innocent version of Dream Daddy. If those exist um, he won’t be very productive for a while. Let’s just say that. 

Cherri: Girl is from the eighties. Video games were the best thing ever to her, back in the day. She still owns an NES and an Atari 2600, which she guards with her life, but she’s kept up to date with everything video game-related since her death. Now, she owns loads of consoles and has played hundreds of games. If she had to pick a favorite type of game, she would go with classic beat em up style type of games. One of the things she and Angie do the most when they hang out at her place is play a ton of multiplayer fighting games. Their favorite is Skullgirls and seeing Peacock and Parasoul duking it out is a common sight on Cherri’s screen, as they are Cherri and Angel’s main PCs. Cherri is also on this sort of journey to play all the NES and Atari games she didn’t get the chance to play because of her death and often, she takes Angel along for the ride. They played ET the Extra-Terrestrial once. They burnt it.

Nifty: Nifty would be ADDICTED to dating games. Obsessed wouldn’t even be the word.  

Crymini. Girl is a hardcore gamer. She be teabagging noobs in Call of Duty every day. It would be hard for her to pick a favorite genre or a favorite game because she plays everything except games that are “for pussys” even though she secretly plays Minecraft and would tear someone’s throat out before she admitted it but she loves action and survival games. Left For Dead, The Last of Us, GTA, Red Dead Redemption, the Borderlands series, Resident Evil, Assassins Creed. The list goes on and on because her collection is quite impressive. She’ll also go to arcades sometimes out of nostalgia. She’s destroyed everyone’s high scores in the one she goes to.   Baxter: Workaholic Baxter would probably never allow himself the time to play video games and even if he did, he’d probably thinking of other things he could be doing with his time. Not necessarily work-related things, but things he simply enjoys more. But I can still imagine him having one exception. I think Baxter could be one of those people who own a Nintendo DS simply to play brain training games. I think those would help him unwind.Those who wouldn’t;

Alastor: Its canon Alastor doesn’t understand modern technology at all. So he would probably just be utterly confused if you gave him a game console. He might enjoy watching other people play video games though. Specifically horror games. He would find them amusing.

Husk: Doesn’t give a fuck about video games. He sees them as “kids stuff." 

Sir Pentious: I think Sir Pentious would be more interested in how video game consoles work than video games themselves. He believes it’s important to stay up to date with the technology of the modern world. But he doesn’t have time to waste on such "mindless entertainment.” as video games. Hell isn’t going to take over itself.  Mimzy: Doesn’t like them all. She’s still mad at video games in general over Guitar Hero. Every time one of those games was released, her neighbors would be playing on those plastic instruments and blast rock music for months. Which she hates. She would honestly beat the shit out of whoever created Guitar Hero if she met them in real life. 

Katie Killjoy: Isn’t in the least bit interested in video games but she is glad that they exist. She’s made a lot of money from demonizing their existence. 

Tom Trench. Understands them as well as Trump understands equality. He can’t wrap his head around them at all. 

Yet despite all that, I can still picture Charlie and all her squad all trying to destroy each other in multiplayer games. Like Super Smash Bros, TF2, Overwatch and the game with the finishing moves they half wish they could enact on each other in real life, Mortal Combat. Like, this would be a regular thing they’d do together and it would always get super competitive and out of hand. It might even get the ones who don’t play video games that often to start playing them out of sheer determination to beat the good ones and get to be the smug ones for once. It would be oh so satisfying to beat them at their own game, literally. Although, didn’t Vivzie say that if Alastor thinks he’s losing at a game, he’ll take over it Jumanji style to make sure he wins? Yeah, I don’t think these would end well.

a couple years back, I learned of a game called huniepop, a dating sim whose premise is that you woo - and eventually fuck - girls by playing a bejewled-like puzzle game

obviously I’ve sunk a lot of time into it

last week I decided I’d try out the sequel, huniecam studio, which is a resource management game in which you are a pimp (or the employee of a pimp??) managing a team of camgirls/escorts and trying to collect the most fans

both of these games are pretty fun.  like I don’t think they’re anybody’s goty, but they’re polished games with fun mechanics and a cute theme

so, the other thing that really strikes me, about both of these games, is that they’re absolute garbage.  like, irredeemable trash

like, obviously they’re pretty problematic, but even without thinking along axes like “problematic,” character designs like “get into the latina girl’s pants by giving her gifts like: a sombrero, maracas, a pinata” are just...indefensibly bad

and the badness feels really...self-indulgent.  like, obviously this kind of thing is tongue-in-cheek.  like, all of the shallow characterization, the nonsensical mechanics, it’s all part of the joke

but...it also feels kind of defensive.  like, the games are afraid of taking themselves seriously.  I mean, the second game literally starts with a cutesy “warning if you wanna fap to this: the erotic content is mostly for humor value”

like, the actual porn here isn’t funny, it’s just porn.  but the games have this attitude of “haha, it’s a porn game,” that feels kind of hollow, like it’s an attempt to deflect criticism with “jokes on you for taking a porn game seriously”

and like, obviously I take porn games seriously!  and, more than that, I think that porn games deserve to take themselves seriously.  like, “dating sim where the mechanism by which you woo girls is literal bejewed” is never going to be unproblematic, but it’s not artistically barren, and I can easily imagine that with only a slightly different approach this sort of game could be something like a biting satire of objectification and dehumanization

but as it is, these games are really not much more than novelties

Genre blending is a wonderful thing, well it can be, I'm sure that there's some genres that just don't mix but I've yet to see it myself. The genre that seems to be popular and a favourite among games developers (especially indie ones) is the dating sim. I've seen dating sims mixed with match three, hack and slash and now a tycoon game. Max Gentlemen Sexy Business is the combination of a dating simulator and a tycoon game. You play as your 'Gentsona' (a persona that you make before the game proper starts, which can be male, female or non-binary) and are referred to by your staff, the trusty Business Maid and Battle Butler, as Sir or Boss or Madam depending on the players choice. In the interests of full disclosure I want it known that I backed this game on Kickstarter. It should also be noted this game has got nudity included.

The tycoon game aspect of this is kept lite, you don't need to worry about buying businesses or even paying employees. This is a game where you literally get money by placing an executive at the bank. Really rather than managing a business you manage your various executives stamina metres (or moxxi as the game calls it) making sure to rest your tired executives and replace them with ones that aren't exhausted. As you play you have the opportunity to hire one of three executives at a time every two (in game) weeks, with there being twelve in total to bring in. Every single one of them can be romanced (regardless of your gender), as long as you put the work in. By work, I mean attending lunch dates (a series of mini-games), giving gifts and occasionally making a choice they like.

As was mentioned before, you get to go on lunch dates with your executives which can be one of several mini-games, all of which are random. For example, one such game involves  making your lunch date a cup of tea. You select the type, the strength and if it has sugar, milk or not. Depending on how much you get right you'll be rewarded in accordance. However if you only get it partially right (or entirely wrong) you'll often be given a hint. As you progress romantically with any given executive you will unlock artwork work relating to that character, as well as in game benefits for the that executive and an alternative outfit. There are a lot of alternative outfits to unlock as well as all sorts of extras that make your time within the game a bit easier. Also as a side bonus your romantic progress with your executives is kept between games, so no need to start from scratch when the game sets you back to where you started.

I'm not kidding when I say that, once you defeat your rival (the first antagonist), there is another villain revealed to be behind it all. At that point the game starts over, except this time you get to pick a starting executive from all the ones you've met and romanced so far. Any stat increases they had or items will be gone though, only the romantic progress remains. This game is really funny, if you take the time to read the actual text. There are so many just down right ridiculous things that occur that I couldn't help but smile when reading through the various plot points. I kind of love the insanity of it all.

I'll be honest by the time the game had me start all over again for the third time (and yes it does that and even more) I was really getting a bit fed up. Sure each time I do a bit better and the game as a whole goes a bit faster but it's still the same process over and over. That isn't to say that I don't like the game at all, I do but yeah it can get a bit tiresome. If this appeals to you perhaps try; Huniepop Dream Daddy

Our game

I don’t know about you, but I watch a lot of YouTube. Like, a lot. I have a pretty good gamer to vlogger ratio in my subscription box and each creator I watch puts out several dozen to several hundred videos a year.

But gaming channels hold a special place in my heart because I watch their videos every day of the week. I mean, every day. Even on the days when a gamer doesn’t upload, which are few and far between compared to breaks of some vloggers. I will often go back and watch my favorite past videos instead to keep from missing a day.

And I watch all sorts of games. Horror games to romance games. Building to battle. One shots can be funny while story driven games can be serious and calm often bordering on emotional.

But my favorite type of video to watch with any of my gamers is their video game series. But the series I like for each individual gamer wildly varies.

This is because, the game I like to watch a gamer play most out of any they have played on their entire channel, is what I often refer to as Our Game.

It can be a single game/stand alone episode, but more often than not it is a series of videos of a game that I will only watch with that one YouTuber.

Games tend to be trendy in the community and most usually like to see all of their favorite YouTubers individual reactions to the new hottest game on the market (usually released only days apart, if not on the same day). I like to do this as well. But Our Game is different. It’s something a little more meaningful.

Our Game can come about in multiple ways. Maybe this gamer is the first person I saw play this particular game. Maybe, in my opinion, they have the smoothest, best paced, best edited, and/or the overall best playthrough with the best choices made in the series. Maybe it was an emotionally heavy game and maybe we shared not only a moment together, but maybe the entire game was an experience for both of us which, even divided by a screen, we experienced together over the course of several hours.

Some gamers I share multiple games with. But I always have that one game, that one series where someone mentions even just the title and I immediately think of one specific gamer’s playthrough.

My games with my YouTubers:

Felix: Felix was the first Gaming channel I found. I watched very few one shot games when I first started getting a feel for him before I fell into his The Walking Dead playthrough. It was the first game series I watched on YouTube. It’s the first series of his that I watched and to this day I remember the “experience” we shared in S1. We haven’t had one during TWD sense, but I’ve gone to him with each new installment of the series and have since done my own playthrough at home. TWD is Our Game.

While it is Our Game and I remember it fondly, it doesn’t have much replay value. So, whenever I’m feeling down or need my PewDiePie fix when he’s on Hiatus, I click on his playlist of “Rage Games” and let it run. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched through it and even though it consists on mainly one offs, I consider it a honorary series.

Mark: I have a few series with Mark. The first one being FNAF which as a series has plagued his career and existence for years and continued into 2018. I know it’s an obvious answer, and not emotional in the least, but he is, as he often jokes, the King of FNAF. I wouldn’t know a new game was in the works or ever released if he didn’t play through it on his channel. And it’s always an experience when he does. His multiple attempts to complete the overly difficult games are where some of the emotions come into play. The first episode of the first game holds my favorite Markiplier quote of all time that has stuck with me to this day: “You do you and I’ll do me and we won’t do each other, probably”. In the moment, it was said as a joke, but out of context they are actually meaningful words to live by.

My second series with him is again a comedic one, but it’s true. For as many times as I’ve watched Mark’s playthrough of FNAF, I’ve watched Huniepop just as many. The first several episodes of it are still hilarious to this day.

Jack: I’ve shared a lot of emotional experiences with Jack specifically. He’s an expample of someone I share one off games with. One that always comes to mind is one of his oldest. Presentable Liberty. Anyone who’s watched Jack has probably sense it. It was our first real emotional experience and it was our first serious game. Another is The Beginner’s Guide. A little longer of a game, a real think piece. To this day, I have never seen another gamer play either of these and I never want to.

As for our shared series there are again many, but the one that I will always recommend to others is Undertale. It’s a surprisingly complex and emotional series. But my favorite aspect would be Jack’s famous voices with he created for the characters. This was such a popular game at the time of its release I actually have watched other’s playthroughs (partial or full). However, Jack’s voices for the characters are my canon voices, his playthrough is the best paced, and my favorite in terms of reactions. Undertale is Our Game.

Ken: His is a fun one and rivals in length with FANF. Our Game is Danganronpa. I’ve yet to catch up with P3 of the series. I’m waiting for a time when I happen to have several weeks in a row because the series is a long one! But it’s an interesting concept with very fun characters and I enjoy Ken’s reluctance to play, or at least read, through all of it after P1 (you just have to watch the series).

I could go on discussing games I’ve watched these or other YouTubers play, but this post is probably long enough. So, uh. This. What is this even.

I've been playing a lot of Huniepop recently because hella procrastination, and the whole time I was thinking, man I would love an FFVII AU where Cloud goes round dating the shit out of SOLDIER/everyone in general, assisted by the lovely Love Fairy Cetra Aerith.

This was meant to be that AU. Except it bears zero resemblance to the game and somehow developed plot. Sort of. I didn’t want to go all out ridiculous in making Aerith a love fairy, but then I started trying to reasonably justify her abilities through her being a Cetra, and tbh this is AU is not something that should be reasonable. Now she’s just OP as fuck.

But look, it’s sassy shit Aerith and harangued Cloud shenanigans, eventually Cloud’s gonna date the whole of ASGZ (and Aerith at some point too probs) and bang all of them and it’s just meant to be silly fun. >>

Not sure how far it’ll go, since multichapters are my archnemesis, but. Shenanigans.

For once, Cloud was grateful for his bulky infantry helmet, and for his lengthy evening patrols. The last thing he wanted right then was any kind of human interaction at all.

He was still kicking himself over his last screw-up. Gods. Zack probably thought he was the worst person on the planet. Or at the very least, the most pathetically awkward. The one time it mattered. The one time when he really, really didn’t want to mess up his words or come across as a dick…

Cloud scowled, scuffing his boots against the sidewalk as he stomped through his patrol route. Zack probably hated him now. He deserved it.

He couldn’t even forget about it. Either his mind pictured the scene all over again; Zack’s confused, hurt face and the way horror and embarrassment had flooded through Cloud in one overwhelming instant. That sensation still squeezed at his chest. Cloud managed to drown out the haunting recollection, but only by yelling mental abuse at himself for being so stupid instead.

He… he would get over it, Cloud told himself. But for the time being, Cloud’s expression was a mess of anger and embarrassment. He was way too close to tears – hence his appreciation for the helmet. He really didn’t want anyone to see him right now.

Cloud was so caught up in berating himself that he almost failed to notice when a girl’s voice called out to him.

“Hey,” she greeted warmly.

Cloud’s pace slowed, then stopped. A lot of people didn’t like ShinRa – it wasn’t so bad here, patrolling so close to Loveless Avenue, but in the slums it was a bad idea to stop to talk to anyone. He was too surprised to think about that, though.

Standing at the entrance to the alleyway Cloud had just walked past, there was a girl in a pink dress with a basket of flowers hanging from her elbow and a staff in her other hand. She was holding one of the flowers out to Cloud.

“Flowers for one gil. Would you like one?”

“Oh. Uh…?”

“They’re special. They bring peace and affection. You look like you could use one.”

Shit. He was still that obvious, huh?

“Or if you don’t want one, they’re a great gift for dates,” the girl added.

Cloud’s expression immediately turned icy. “Sorry,” he said. “I would, but I already fucked up my chance at a date.”

And—shit. He’d done it again! That had sounded way too hostile. It wasn’t this lady’s fault he was an idiot; he was pissed at himself, not her. She didn’t know that, though. Now he’d just made himself look like a total jerk.

He returned to staring at the ground, pretending he couldn’t feel the frustrated heat pricking at his eyes.  “I-I’m sorry. Bad day.” He rummaged in his wallet and thrust a five gil note at her. “Keep the change,” he mumbled, making a hasty retreat.

Cloud could not wait for this day to be over, ugh. He needed to be unconscious as soon as possible. Maybe when he woke up tomorrow his head would be in a better place.

A hand touched him on the shoulder, and Cloud nearly jumped a mile.

The girl in the pink dress laughed – she’d followed him out. “You didn’t even take your flower,” she said. “You look like you need it.”

“Oh… uh. Thank you.” Cloud awkwardly took the flower she was holding out. It was rather pretty, and he felt a little better to have it in his hand.

“My name is Aerith, by the way.”

“…Cloud.”

“Cloud. That’s a cute name!”

Cloud stared at her for a moment. “Um. No offence or anything, but… why are you talking to me? I kind of snapped at you before.”

“But you’re not a bad person, I can tell. You’re just upset. Because of your date, right?”

“I’d rather not talk about it,” Cloud muttered.

“Tell me about it. I can help.”

Cloud glanced up to find Aerith smiling at him. A disbelieving scoff died on his lips. There was something in her eyes… they sparkled with humour, but something more than that. Something older, and much more powerful.

He stared, awestruck for a moment. Cloud shook himself. “How? And why?”

“Well, I’m a flower seller. I see a lot of romance,” Aerith said. “As for why…”

She paused, and for a moment she looked a lot older and a lot more serious.

“Well. I see a lot of other things, not just romance. Things that might have been, or things that were, in another life. If in this life I can help you find some kind of happiness, you deserve that.”

Cloud didn’t know what to say to that. It was a ridiculous thing to say, but… he believed her. Whatever she meant, whatever she was.

“Alright,” he agreed softly.

That bright smile was immediately back. “Great! Tell me all about this date of yours.”

“Well. Would-be date,” Cloud corrected. “He’s a SOLDIER. I’ve been trying to ask him out for weeks, but… ugh, I can never just spit it out. I tried it again today, but I guess I was too subtle. He didn’t get it. And I got frustrated, and, uh… accidentally insinuated he was sleeping around with the other First Class SOLDIERs.”

Aerith looked delighted. “Is he?”

“I—I don’t know. I don’t think so. I was just being stupid when I said it. He’s close with them, and they get all touchy-feely sometimes but honestly I think that’s just Zack, he’s like that all the time.”

Aerith tilted her head at him, looking curiously at the little she could see of Cloud’s face beneath his helmet. “You’re jealous,” she announced, and Cloud immediately sputtered.

“I’m not—I don’t—Aerith!”

“These other First Class SOLDIERs. You like one of them too?” Cloud could feel his face heating up, and Aerith’s grin widened. “Ohh. More than one. How many guys are there?”

“…four,” Cloud muttered. He got the feeling there was no point trying to keep things from her.

“And they’re all SOLDIERs? First Classes?” Aerith laughed. “You’ve got your sights set high.”

“You don’t need to tell me that. I know they’re out of my league.”

Aerith hooked her arm through Cloud’s, and Cloud stared at her in shock. “Well, you’ve got me on your side now!” she said, winking at him. “We’ve clearly got a lot of work to do. So, let’s go get you a date!”

“Um… are you. Coming with me?”

“Duh.”

“I don’t think ShinRa will just let civilians wander into the infantry areas, never mind the SOLDIER floor.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’ve got it covered.”

Cloud gave her a look of sheer disbelief. It wasn’t very visible beneath the helmet, but his heavy silence was enough to get the message across. Aerith only laughed.

“Trust me,” she said. Her smile was… mildly terrifying. “I’ve got this. And so do you. Do you want to get laid or not?”

“Whoa! Who said anything about getting laid?”

“Oh, like you don’t jack off to your gorgeous SOLDIER boys when you think everyone else in the barracks is asleep at night.”

Cloud was speechless for a moment. That sure got personal all of a sudden. Aerith was still looking at him expectantly, but Cloud only shook his head.

“I don’t think I can let you put yourself in danger like that. You’ll get in a lot of trouble if ShinRa find you trespassing.”

Aerith knocked Cloud’s helmet with her staff. “Ow!” Cloud protested.

“Don’t underestimate me,” she said. Her lips were smiling, but her eyes were dangerous.

Cloud rubbed his bruised head. It hadn’t been much of an impact, but having his helmet knocked about wasn’t comfortable. “Man, you’re really insistent about this, huh.”

“Let’s just say… if I can help you get your love life sorted, you’re not the only one who could benefit.”

There was no dissuading her, that much was obvious. And as crazy and weird as the whole thing sounded, Cloud couldn’t shake that look she harboured the depths of her eyes. There was more to Aerith. A lot more.

“Fine. I’ve still got half an hour of this patrol first, though.”

Aerith fell into step beside Cloud. “That’s okay,” she said. “Why don’t you tell me all about these SOLDIER boys of yours while we walk?”

“I…” Cloud shut his mouth and just nodded helplessly.

“Start with Zack. I haven’t met your Zack yet this time.”

“’This time?’” Cloud echoed.

Aerith only smiled at him, that mysterious, knowing look glittering in the depths of her eyes. Whatever else Cloud was getting himself in for, he got the feeling his love life definitely wasn’t going to be boring anymore.

I had such a miserable day

First I went to the GP was like hey, I’ve tried getting counselling in college but them bitches be taking too long, not replying for over 3 weeks so i thought id come here hi

Went to this shitty ass motivational speaking thing that i paid 300 quid for and like everything she said i knew???

On Dream Daddy being “too short”

I just finished playing Dream Daddy last night, and I have...incredibly strong feelings about the whole “it’s too short” thing being bandied about right now. I have a lot to say, so, if you’re interested in my take on this...

Here’s the thing: simply put, length in hours is not a good way to judge whether or not a game is good or not. For several reasons. All of which I will try to cover in due time.

First off, there’s a stark and radical difference between a game’s length and the game’s experience. Think of something like Skyrim, for example. I’ve sunk over five hundred hours into Skyrim at this point, but my most memorable experiences come from back when I was still figuring the game out. Yeah, it’s still fun, but some of the gild has worn off by now. Mods inject some freshness, but otherwise it has largely faded as the novelty’s worn off.

More to the point, however, is my next, well, point: time is more a factor in a strong gameplay experience, and Dream Daddy is all about a narrative experience. I can play Skyrim, or MineCraft, or even something like Bejeweled for hundreds upon hundreds of hours because those games revolve around gameplay and not so much around story.

To elaborate, Skyrim is a vast game that can take ages to get through. There’s tons of content. However, its story definitely leaves something to be desired, not to mention the fact there’s no reason to complete the main questline. You’re not going to get punished for wandering through the woods picking flowers, even if you spend a hundred in-game days doing it, so there’s no pressure to save the world. There are people who, to this day, have never even gotten close to defeating Alduin, because they exhausted the game’s capacity and grew bored with it without touching the main quest.

Same goes for MineCraft. The only way I can really enjoy MineCraft now is by playing mods like Sky Factory or Pixelmon (RIP). It’s not that MineCraft isn’t fun. Far from it. It’s definitely an “easy to learn, hard to master” sort of thing, and opens up more and more as you progress. But it definitely gets old fast. I’ve never managed to play vanilla MineCraft to the point of defeating the Ender Dragon or the Wither, just because, again, there’s no real reason to, and you won’t get punished if you don’t.

(And don’t even get me started on the fiasco that was No Man’s Sky. That, in my opinion, is the prime example of what happens when a game’s length is more important than its experience.)

Dream Daddy is more or less a visual novel. That means it doesn’t have any really new or interesting gameplay to offer. Thus, it rests fully on being a solid narrative experience. And that’s much, much harder to pull off well. Good gameplay needs tens or hundreds of hours to really be fully explored, but a story, if not done well, can get old much faster than that. Any storyteller worth their salt knows that the worst thing they can do is make their viewer/reader think they’re wasting their time

A good narrative experience actually benefits from being shorter and more concise. Some of the best narrative-driven games out there are only a few hours long. One of my personal favorites, Spec Ops: the Line only took me six or seven hours to finish, and that was only because some of the gameplay sections really ramped up the difficulty near the end. Also, the Stanley Parable, a game that, like Dream Daddy, rests almost completely on its narrative, can be almost fully explored within a handful of hours. Pony Island has good gameplay and a good story, and is only two hours long. Same goes for Undertale. If they were any longer than ten hours, they’d be overstaying their welcome.

That is how I feel about Dream Daddy. Yeah, it definitely has places it could be expanded upon, but mostly, it’s a solid story, with excellent, likable characters that you quickly get invested in, and much more depth than your average dating sim. Unlike something like, say, HuniePop, I actually felt compelled to seek out and befriend/date every dad because I got invested in their personal struggles. I ended up sinking twelve hours into the game just so I could know the ending of every story. The fact that it didn’t take that long to complete didn’t bother me at all. Their stories were short and sweet, and I’d play them all again.

Something else to consider is not everyone can devote the same amount of time to games. A kid on summer vacation (or an unemployed schlub like me) can afford to spend a weekend hunting down every last secret in a sixty hour open world game, but someone who works forty or more hours a week can’t spare a lot of time to games like that. For someone with not a lot of time on their hands, a short, decent experience is way more valuable in that it can be finished faster.

I’ll wrap this whole diatribe up with a simile. A good gameplay experience is like a full three-course meal, while a good narrative experience is like a piece of chocolate cake. By the end of the three courses, you’re full and content, but you probably didn’t clean all your plates entirely, and maybe you liked something somebody else didn’t, and it takes a long time to get through all three. A piece of chocolate cake might not last as long, but if it’s fluffy with creamy frosting and a lava center...you’re gonna remember it for a while. You might think you want a second piece of cake, but you’ll probably regret it if you eat another.

Does that make sense? I hope that makes sense.

TL:DR - Dream Daddy may have its flaws, but being too short isn’t one I’d value too strongly. It has a great story, great characters, and is overall very lighthearted and cute. Definitely worth checking out.

First of all, thank you so much for writing a story just for me! It’s pretty awesome! If you haven’t noticed, my generalities don’t really change. I’m pretty predictable.

What I Like kid!fic (as in, the characters have kids, not the character are kids - toddler age is perfect), crushes/beginning of relationship (the concept of the feelings coming to fruition and both parties going, “WTF is going on? Why am I acting this way around him/her?” is one of my favorite fandom tropes), smut is always good, flirting.

What I Don’t Like Incest, bestiality and molestation are my only three sexual squicks, fandom has desensitized me to everything else. Character bashing. Yes, I’m generally a slasher but that doesn’t mean I hate the female (or in the case of a femslash ship, male) characters (or, if I do, it’s for reasons unrelated to “I ship his/her love interest with his/her best (fe)male friend and s/he gets in the way of the gay sex”). On that note, I also hate when writers completely disregard canon pairings. As much as I don’t want them to, they exist. If you’re gonna break them up, let us know how it happened. Please. And now onto my specifics!

Requested Fandom #1: The Pussycat Dolls, Ashley/Nicole, Carmit/Nicole For either pairing: Maybe it really wasn’t Nicole’s doing that she got all the spotlight in the group. I’d love to see something where she is forgiven.

All of the other girls (not just Carmit and Ashley) have blamed Nicole and her being pushed into the lead role with the other girls being her “backup dancers” so to speak as the reason for their split. Carmit stated she was the “glue that held the group together” and Ashley said she “wasn’t allowed to talk, only Nicole was.” But what if that wasn’t what Nicole wanted, what if she was forced into it and hated it just as much as the other girls, which is why when they tried to put her with a new group of girls she noped out. I’d love to see her reaching out to either of these girls, and explaining her side of the story.

Requested Fandom #2: Voltron: Legendary Defender, Allura/Pidge Girls’ Night Out (or In), Space Mall trip, maybe admittance of feelings?

I feel like if these two were given proper relationship development, they would become good friends. I can see them bonding over their hate/contempt of the Galra for ripping their families (and in Allura’s case, her entire way of life) from her to start, then learning that they have a lot more in common. (Basically finally having that conversation Allura was trying to have in S1E05 when she was trying to get Pidge to admit she’s actually a girl, only with much more success since the circumstances have changed.) I also feel that Pidge is much girlier than we’ve seen in canon (I mean, she wears a dress in flashbacks/the photo of her and Matt), and I think they would bond over that as well.

Requested Fandom #3: Yuri!!! on Ice, Mila/Sara Mickey doesn’t have to worry about boys grabbing Sara’s attention, because she doesn’t even like them.

Mila/Sara: I both love and hate how Mickey is so worried about Sara getting with a boy, that I think it would blow his mind if Sara hooked up with Mila and was all, “You were wrong all the way brother.”

Requested Fandom #4: Mystic Messenger, Jaehee/MC Love in the coffee shop

Oh, Jaehee, Jaehee, Jaehee. I did not expect her to be my breakout favorite in this game (I really wanted Yoosung!) but I ended up playing her route first and was shipping these two almost immediately. I want Jaehee to stop friendzoning MC and give her the romantic ending she deserves with her as much as she deserves with the boys (the Christmas DLC came close, but still not there!)

These two both have terrible lovers and they deserve much more than what they’ve currently got. I definitely see them running from their problems to some other hood and ending up together.

For Female Player/Nikki: Nikki shows the protag some of her favorite video games

Jessie/Lola: I got some major, major vibes that there was something between them before the start of the game. What was it? Was it just a friends with benefits thing? Was it a relationship? Are there still lingering feelings between the two of them?

Female Player/Nikki: Nikki has always been my favorite of the girls, mostly because she’s the type of girl I would hang out with in real life. (I think that’s true of a lot of people who play this game.) I can see the protag wanting to learn about Nikki’s love of video games, and Nikki being more than eager to comply with that request.

I had the HuniePop characters! Honey and Pop! I never decided on a name for Honey for real, but I DID decide on a real name for Pop. 

He’s secretly Evristhenis Papadoupolis. Is it any wonder he goes by Pop?

ANYWAYS. 

I decided that, after the events of HuniePop, he actually starts going to college again. Meets some friends. Joins a theater class, joins their group, the lead-up is supposed to be he ends up in a Sanders Sides group, and somehow he’s the Anxiety of their group. 

The question over their heads is how he suits Anxiety so perfectly when he’s simultaneously dating like ten different girls. (”That doesn’t read anxiety to me. You’re doing that flawlessly, like you don’t even have to try.” “I’m trying so very incredibly hard.” “How do you even manage ten girls?” “With great difficulty.” ) 

He’s got ‘romancing the ladies’ down to an art and everyone thinks he may actually be super suave. Did I mention the Papadoupolis twins are supposed to be bi? Pop would kind of like to pursue that at some point, but kind of like he sucked at the beginning of HuniePop, he has no idea how to start here either. Kyu’s advice ceased to be good advice ages ago. 

“I wanna impress these theater guys with my audition for their group...what do I do?” “It’s theater, right? Just do whatever. Be creative-that’ll definitely get their attention.” *awkwardly performs the Anarchy speech from V For Vendetta in Greek by accident* “.....well, you’ve got their attention, just not certain it’s GOOD attention...”

“Why does your Anxiety have like the names of ten girls on his phone?” “Why do you have our Anxiety’s phone? Give it back.” “......one of them is a cat girl.” “Are you jelly? Give it back.”

Pop doesn’t ordinarily show his anxiety, but he gets it in excess when doing new things. Imagine his first outing with Kyu involved about a hundred loops around of ‘let’s go talk to some broads’ and ‘OR we could just stay here and watch video games’ ‘I SAID, let’s go talk to some BROADS’. Pop’s good at dating now, but that doesn’t actually make him any more confident than he started out.

Do you play otome games?

Yes and no? I’ve only played amnesia, and even then I’ve only played kent’s and shin’s routes. I started mystic messenger, but I didn’t get very far bc i can’t dedicate all of my actual time to it.

Mobile otomes are kinda iffy to me in general, but so is mobile gaming as a whole. I want to pay for the game one time, and get all the content from the get go. And I know most mobile otomes that I’ve come across not only force you to buy full routes, but from what I can play of the preview (?) aren’t very interesting.

I would love to play uta no prince sama, but it hasn’t been localized, and even though psp isn’t region locked, it’s still a visual novel so it wouldn’t be very fun if I played it in Japanese since I don’t know the language. I will say that I did email the developers to ask if they could try to put it on steam, they said they didn’t have any plans for the series, so I doubt that will be happening anytime soon. (I talked to the North American division, I have no idea whether they have any plans for the series in Japan)

Not really otome, but I do love playing games with a romance aspect. I’ve played several games in the harvest moon series, my favorite being grand bazaar. Going along with that, I’ve played story of seasons (and am looking forward to the next installment), a few rune factory games, and stardew valley. While I didn’t finish since I was borrowing the game from my ex, I started fire emblem awakening. I’ve also played persona 3, but I haven’t played any others so idk if the other games have a slight dating part too. And while I didn’t play it myself, I’ve watched a few videos on YouTube of people playing huniepop, though I think huniecam studio is more my speed.
