Inspiration Saturday/ Several Sentence Sunday
I started a new wip. No one look at me.
The inspiration from this shamelessly comes the fact that I've been working in labour and delivery for the whole month of May and there's an obstetrician/pediatrician couple here that always see each other in the OR and I instantly thought of Buddie. So please enjoy the first (long) snippet of Doctors AU, featuring Obstetrician!Eddie and Pediatrician!Buck. The rest of the 118 will also feature in the obstetrics/pediatrics field, although roles are yet to be confirmed. I'm not 100% sure about this and a little nervous about sharing it cause sharing words has felt weird lately, so I'm sorry if it's not great!
Tagged for Inspiration Saturday by @inell @hippolotamus (eventually smh) @cal-daisies-and-briars @dangerpronebuddie and @daffi-990 (I will be getting to all your snippets so soon!) Snippet under the cut to save your dash.
Eddie pushes through the doors of the NICU, his chest heaving. He doesn’t do this; he doesn’t let patients get to him. He’s a professional. He performs a surgery, delivers a baby, stitches up the mother and moves on to the next one.
Except today, he can’t.
Eddie strides down the corridor until he’s in the nurses’ station and begins to scour the brightly lit electronic board with all the patient’s names.
He can’t shake the feeling that he’s fucked up, that he should have called it sooner and rushed the mother to surgery the second he’d been asked to see her. She’d been labouring for hours, and she was tiring when they called him in to review her. One look at the monitor by her bed had told him all he’d needed to know – that her and her baby were in distress, and something needed to be done.
But, she’d clutched his hand and begged him to let her try just a bit longer.
Eddie squeezes his eyes shut and takes a shaky breath as he tries to rid his mind of the memory of hearing the baby’s heart rate drop on the monitor. Even after being an obstetrician for 10 years, nothing will ever prepare him for the gut-wrenching fear that comes during an emergency. The way you hold your breath and will it to increase, counting in your head as you wonder how much longer you let it go before you dive for the emergency button. He’d done an examination when it was clear the heart rate wasn’t going to recover, to see if there was any chance she could push the baby out, and his heart had sunk into his shoes when he’d felt the umbilical cord before he was even up to his second knuckle.
Taking some deep breaths through his nose, Eddie opens his eyes and scans the board, trying to find the name. It’s possible it’ll be too early – the nurses might not have admitted the baby on the system yet, but the pit in his stomach grows with each passing second that he doesn’t find it.
There’s a noise behind him – someone clearing their throat – and Eddie spins around as a deep, calming voice speaks.
“Hey man, can I help you with something?”
Eddie is instantly taken aback by the man in front of him. He must be new, because Eddie’s certain he’d remember if he’d seen this guy in the OR, and he’s looking at Eddie with concern, his eyebrows furrowed and blue eyes piercing into Eddie’s. He’s tall and muscular – obscenely so for (Eddie assumes) a pediatrician, with dark blond hair that’s been plastered with a criminal amount of hair product. He’s in a pair of delicate pink scrubs, with a white lab coat over the front. There’s a small, rainbow watch hanging from the breast pocket of his coat, and a name badge on his chest, with two tiny feet drawn just beside his name.
Evan Buckley.
“Hey, I’m Dr. Diaz – uh – Eddie,” Eddie says, awkwardly extending a hand towards the man. His grip is firm but warm, and his hands are soft, although Eddie’s not sure exactly why he’s noticing that.
“Dr. Buckley,” the guy replies with a friendly smile that makes the corners of his eyes crinkle. “Everyone calls me Buck. You looking for someone in particular?”
Eddie turns back to the board with a frown, folding his arms, and Buck sidles up next to him, mirroring his stance. Their shoulders brush, and Eddie notices how the guy is just a couple of inches taller than him. Interesting.
“Yeah I’m – uh – I’m looking for baby McKinnon? Born about an hour ago via emergency caesarean due to cord prolapse and obstructed labour, resuscitated immediately after birth and bought here.”
Buck frowns and pulls out a list from the pocket of his scrubs.
“Is everything okay with the mother?” he asks as he scans his list, “You’re an obstetrician, right?”
“Yeah, she’s fine, pulled through surgery and is in recovery now. Just wanted to check up on the baby – he looked pretty rough.”
Buck lets out a deep sigh next to him and Eddie whips his head around, doing a double take when he sees Buck’s expression.
God, no, please no, let him be okay, let him have survived, he’s just mixed up with someone else.
“I’m sorry, man,” Buck says gently, resting a hand on Eddie’s shoulder. “We couldn’t stabilise him. He was so hypoxic and they couldn’t intubate him and we – I’m sorry.”
Eddie must make a noise because the hand on his shoulder tightens. His chest feels tight, like he’s not getting enough air, the world is beginning to spin. He take deep, gulping breaths of air as he tries to regulate himself, but it’s not use.
It’s too close. Too much like Christopher. His son, his perfect, 7-year-old boy, looked just like that kid when he was born. Eddie’s too close to this. He’s gotta get out.
“Hey, are you okay?”
Eddie shakes himself from Buck’s grip, blinking furiously as tears threaten to spill down his cheeks.
“I’m sorry, I’ve gotta – I need to go,” he says hurriedly, his voice cracking, and he turns on his heel. He doesn’t run from the room, but it’s a close one. He barely even registers Dr. Buckley calling after him as he briskly walks down the corridor, practically throwing his swipe pass at the door, and then he’s in the stairwell before he knows it, drinking in the crisp, cool air as he slides down the wall and comes to a rest on a step.
Fuck.

elias will always say that he’s not a fan of kids but the moment he gets to be godfather it changes. he’s cool with sticky hands all over his shirt and holding juice boxes while at the park.
awe
“trust me dude, it’s different when you have your own kid,” quinn told elias as they looked out at the nursery, daisy among the newborns bundled up in blankets. “i don’t think i want kids,” elias said. “well, at least be a good godfather.”
when daisy was four months old, you had gotten sick and quinn, sleeping next to you, had also gotten sick. “elias can you please just take her to the doctors appointment? she needs the next round of her shots today,” mom pleaded over the phone. he awkwardly carried in the car seat into the pediatrician office and got everything taken care of. and he held daisy close when she cried after her shots.
when daisy was five, they moved into a house. a swing set in the backyard was put up and during the housewarming party, no one could find daisy or elias inside. “have you seen petey?” quinn asked but mom pulled him over to the window. barely illuminated by the porch light since the sun had gone down, you could see your daughter babbling on about something and elias pushing her on the swing in the darkness.

Bastian Muñoz - 48 - He/Him - Pedro Pascal FC
CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED p*rnstar, Bastian Muñoz. Aged 48 now, he certainly didn't think he'd still be doing this shit for money, but honestly it was too good to turn down. Absolute goofball who is secretly a sage. He's been through enough to have an answer for nearly any question as long as history or english aren't involved. Sweet southern boy with a tendancy towards being called daddy (even though he really longs to be a pillow princess).
Auggie Bell - 26 - He/Him - Joe Keery FC
FAMILY DISAPPOINTMENT, Auggie Bell was born to two scientist moms who have travelled the world to continue their studies. August hardly graduated high school in New Jersey. Try as he might, he could never meet his parents potential. Shitty hipster barista. Famous bassist wanna be. 80s final girl type PTSD. Honestly, Auggie is just happy to be alive, and be able to flirt. As long as his face card doesn't decline, he's good.
Joanne Sheridan - 24 - She/Her - Zendaya FC
CAREER CRIMINAL but with the thickest cajun accent you've ever heard. Jo's been making a life for herself all on her own since she ran away from home as a teen. She's gotten herself pretty far just by thieving and killing. She has a knack for aligning herself with likeminded folk, and can follow instructions real well if there's a pay out.
Peter Caldwell - 64 - He/Him - Kyle MacLachlan FC
METALHEAD. Peter's been around the metal scene since its dawn. He spent years travelling and headbanging, learning all that he could not only about rock, but all genres. When he finally decided to settle down he headed back to the states and opened up a record shop. No one really knew where he got the money from or how it stays open, but he's happy to provide a safe space for the community.
Samar Arya - 2,000+ - He/Him - Dev Patel FC
THE ANCIENT ONE. Samar Arya has been around since the beginning of time. Or at least it is beginning to feel that way. One of the very first of his kind. He has seen mofre than any intelligent life form should ever suffer through. Frequently described as a grumpy old man, the vampire does his best to hide his hopelessly romantic true self.
Benedict Osbourne - 25 - He/Him (Transman)- Joe Quinn FC
THE DUNGEON MASTER. Your usual nerdy DnD youtuber. Though he started out small with a few friends and a camera, he is now constantly asked to conventions, and has even crossed over into the world of gaming streams. A household name for weirdos.
Kali Gonzalez - 25 - She/Her - Alexa Demie FC
TATTOO ARTIST. Witchy and crystal loving, Kali usually smells like incense. She's quite laid back but she absolutely loves with her entire heart. However that doesn't mean she hasn't gotten into a fight or two. She knows she's hot and doesn't need anyone to remind her, her ego is big enough. Does require men to do a tarot reading before she sleeps with them, but it's okay because she sorta prefers ladies anyway.
Daisy Davis - 27 - She/Her - Laura Harrier FC
THE OPTIMIST. People usually believed Daisy was stupid. She was bubbly, sweet, and would help anyone who needed help. Yet what she may have lacked in so called 'street smarts' she surely made up for in her knowledge of language. She's a bit to comfortable living off of her wealthy parents money, but if she ever wanted a job, he ability to speak 10 different languages would surely get her one. In her free time she enjoys translating various poetry.
Lilla Jean Grace - 27 - She/Her - Suki Waterhouse FC
STRIPPER WITH A HEART OF GOLD. Lilla always had big dreams of making it out of Minnesota. Unfortunately those dreams haven't proven to be realistic just yet. She grew up constantly being told she was an idiot, and felt she had proven that by failing out of high school. Yet she's grown to learn that she's plenty emotionally smart. She can take care of herself, so what else matters?
Jude Ofori - 36 - He/Him - Yahya Abdul-Mateen II FC
PEDIATRICIAN, TOTAL ASSHOLE. Jude works too much and too hard to worry about other people's feelings. Cold. Unfeeling. Words plenty of his ex husbands and wives had thrown around, but he never took offense. Deeply insecure, and constantly looking for validation. The man is surely going to crumble at some point. Just not today.
Frankie Slater - 35 - She/They - Ritu Arya FC
THE EXHAUSTED ROCKSTAR. The whole touring thing was fun for the first ten years Then it became tedious. She'd spent her entire twenties in and out of rehabs, and on the cover of magazines scantaly clad or puking on herself. With three divorces under her belt by thirty Frankie has finally gotten her shit together. Maybe. At least she's been clean for a year, that's worth something right?
Hayden Altman - 39 - He/Him - Andrew Garfield FC
PARANOID. Writing about true crime isn't for the weak-hearted, so Hayden isn't sure why he got into it in the first place. Probably some point when he was getting a dual degree in pyschology and writing, or maybe the minor in criminology. He had always been deeply obsessed with research and finding as much information as possible. Any time he questions why he ruins his sanity for it, the checks come in, or detectives reach out for help and he realizes it is worth it.
Nina Otieno - 39 - She/Her - Lupita Nyong'o FC
THE FALLEN BALLERINA. Raised in France, Nina was raised within her mother's ballet studio, wearing point shoes practically as soon as she could stand up. She loved dance, she viewed it as the most sacred out of all of the arts, and dedicated her life to it. There was no other option but for her to be a performer, and she did not disappoint. By the time she was a teenager she travelled with a touring group across Europe. In her mid twenties, she'd finally made a name and living for herself when it all fell apart. A tale as old as time. One bad fall, and she would never be able to dance the same again. She's found purpose in being a teacher. She figures the least she can do is bring proper Parisian Ballet to Americans.

Meet my child Sawyer.
if you’re hearing Golden by Jill Scott playing, you have to know SAWYER WOODS (SHE/HER; CISWOMAN) is near by! the 33 year old PEDIATRICIAN has been in denver for, like, 5 years. they’re known to be quite clingy, but being confident seems to balance that out. or maybe it’s the fact that they resemble Candice Patton. personally, i’d love to know more about them seeing as how they’ve got those iced coffee loose messy buns ,tortoise shell glasses hanging on the brim of her nose and maybe i’ll get my chance if i hang out around CHERRY CREEK DISTRICT
About
Sawyer is a thirty three year old pediatrician. She knew since she was a young girl she wanted to help others, she would give the coat off of her back if she could.
Sawyer is from Dallas, Texas she never saw herself moving, until she decided to take a risk and move to Colorado.
Sawyer has a black French bulldog named Daisy, she adopted her when she first moved to Colorado as a comfort dog.
Sawyer's head is often in the clouds, but at the same time she is a realist, and if things are not in the cards, for her there is no need to force anything, whether it be a career or love.
Sawyer is extremely creative - she loves to paint and escape in the art, if she wasn't a pediatrician she would have been an art curator.
Sawyer eventually wants to be a mother and get married and find love, her parent's love was a major pillar for her.
Sawyer has an younger sister they are six years apart, though Sawyer and her sister have been thick as theives since she was born.
Sawyer is a huge bookworm - since she was little, she’d get lost in the pages of any book no matter the genre, but her favorite genre is romance.
Wanted connections:
Sawyer’s baby sister - I don’t have a set backstory for her, just that she moved in shortly after Sawyer did, the rest is solely UTP their ideal age range is 26-27. face claims suggestions include, Zendaya, Samantha Logan.
Sawyer’s potential love interest - I’m a hopeless romantic, so I would love a boyfriend or a connection of something like that, for Sawyer, nothing too cringe though, we can discuss any details in the IM. Face claim suggestions: Dev Patel, Riz Ahmed, Theo James, Trevante Rhodes or anyone, I’m willing to pick your brain.

Note
So think about the fact that he probably has medical trauma, plus the genuine nervousness, most new parents have when they take their kids to the pediatrician because they're afraid that they're going to get called bad parents.
Beard taking Daisy to the pediatrician.
i do think beard had to like. force himself to get it over with. standing in his bathroom, staring at his reflection, just. Don’t mess this up with your own shit. don’t do that. think of daisy, that’s it.

Daisy H. at the Midwest Center For Youth & Families
I went to South Shore Academy willingly, asking my family for help. This facility's staff uses force and threats to control the patients. On their website, it says from their patient surveys that over 90% of patients were satisfied with their care, understood their medications, etc. I too took this survey, here's the reality: a staff member handed it to me while I was crying and stood over my shoulder while I filled it out. She then guilted me about my answers and told me I was lying and had me either justify my answers or choose a better score. There was a section where "favorite staff" could be listed and she "suggested" to me who to list. These surveys do not represent patient experiences.
Staff would do whatever they wanted. Staff would routinely express their controversial political opinions against the wishes of some other staff and the residents. Staff members would express their physical attraction to underage characters and actors in movies residents would watch. Staff at one point threatened my whole unit with "cavity checks". (They did not go through with it.) Staff would use blatant judgment and call patient's families' parenting styles "horrible". The "patient advocate" was also the head therapist (essentially the boss of the program) so when grievances went to her, it was nothing she wasn't already aware of, nor would she address the issues. In her defense, she may not have had administrative power to do anything, which is a bureaucratic problem in itself. Staff even gave kids with severe allergies (noted in the patient's charts, which they routinely admitted they did not read) food that would send them into anaphylaxis against the child's request, saying things like "it won't kill you". Staff spent a large chunk of their time complaining about how little they get paid and making a point of it to express how unfair their jobs are, mentioning things like how they can't get through their shifts without multiple energy drinks. A staff at one point was heard late at night complaining about a "frequent flyer" patient at the Kouts facility saying "I wish he would have just got it [suicide] done already; he's the worst!" I routinely saw staff put children in holds, once with four different adults lying on top of a child, one on each limb, kid face-down on the ground, with the nurse onsite checking their pulse every five minutes.
The nurses did not have personal boundaries and would routinely touch/hug/grab patients without their consent. Nurses also routinely attempted to give patients the wrong type/dose of medications and refuse to administer PRN medications saying that "the patient was becoming reliant on drugs and not trying hard enough to use therapeutic skills" (to kids with no history of substance abuse.) The doctor was a whole different story. He also used the "not trying hard enough to use skills" line. He refused to address my rapidly worsening tic disorder, telling me "they aren't tics" which my pediatrician and neurologist at home adamantly disagreed with, and dismissing me and all of my concerns and complaints about side effects of my medication.
Patients were only allowed to talk about their feelings, diagnoses, beliefs, religion, past experiences including trauma, etc. about three times a week: once in individual therapy, once in family therapy (if you were lucky enough to be invited), and once in process group (group therapy) (again, if you were lucky enough to be invited). I could write a whole book about my experiences and the things I saw there. To her credit, my therapist was pretty good, especially given the (judgment:) impossible position she was put in at this workplace. In conclusion, please don't send your kid here.

Interview with Amy Vastine
His Texas Runaway Bride by Amy Vastine is the last in the “Stop the Wedding Series.” It seems the author saved the best for the last.
This story opens with the heroine, Willow Sanderson, about to walk down the alter when she realizes she does not want to be a Dallas trophy wife. She leaves and flees to the small town of Maple Grove Texas where she lucks out and finds a job as the nanny to the sheriff’s four-year-old son, Camden. She makes friends easily and is attracted to Sheriff Bryce Koller.
Willow becomes suspicious as to why Camden is always thirsty, has tingling in his fingers, and is told he has lost some weight. At first, her suspicions and recommendation that Camden be tested for diabetes is resisted by Bryce. But with her insistence they go to the pediatrician where the diagnosis is confirmed. The three of them fall into a routine where each care for the other.
Readers are spellbound, wondering will Willow go back to her fiancé or will she stay and become a family with Bryce and Camden. This is a very heartwarming book where the characters come alive.
Elise Cooper: How did you get the idea for the story and series?
Amy Vastine: This is the last book in the series, and I had not written about a runaway bride yet. I wanted a conflict right from the beginning and what better than a runaway bride.
EC: How would you describe Willow?
AV: She always did what is expected. Not a complainer. Thoughtful, dainty, calm, inquisitive, passionate, and positive. She grew up to be expected to be a people pleaser. She is hiding because she does not want to face the music of having a lot of people upset with her. Her fiancé and parents never asked her how she felt and seemed to not respect her.
EC: How about her parents?
AV: Domineering, dictating, demanding, and controlling. She never stood up for herself. She was always compliant, giving off the impression that her parents were doing nothing wrong. They were always judgmental.
EC: Did you get the idea for the Off-Limits room from “Beauty and the Beast”?
AV: I did not make that connection. I often think about if you lose someone special there is something that must be kept personal. It is a little “Beauty and the Beast.”
EC: How would you describe Bryce?
AV: Kind, protective, gentle, respectful, charming, and funny. He is a nervous dad. He is doing both the mom and dad stuff, which is very overwhelming.
EC: What about the relationship?
AV: They both have secrets, are stubborn, and are in denial. At times they act as partners. She is a good complement to him and vice versa. She recognizes that he has her back, is very forgiving, and is caring. She was always raised to a held to a higher standard, but he does not do that.
EC: What was the role of Bryce’s son, Camden?
AV: He is the reason they connected. He is also the reason that Willow comes full circle. She gets the chance to get back to nursing once again.
EC: Why give Camden diabetes?
AV: My dad and grandfather had diabetes. It could be something that a parent might not realize. But a medical professional might connect the dots. I wanted to put in the symptoms one could look for and there are a lot of ways to monitor it. I work at a school with middle schoolers and there are children with built in monitors into their arms. What my dad hated the most is getting pricked in the finger. So, I allowed Camden to have a better quality of life with the monitor.
EC: What was the role of the teenage dog walker, Daisy?
AV: She is a rebellious teenager. She was one of many ragtag characters that need a family. There is the grandma type neighbor, June, and Daisy and Camden and even the hero and heroine Willow and Bryce who need a family. They support each other and treat each other as a family. They take care of each other. In Daisy’s case she is gruff but caring and kind. She is street smart and will do well in life. In her own way she is industrious.
EC: Next books?
AV: I am working on the fourth book of the series I write with the other authors; about the Blackwell sisters. It will be out in November 2024 and is titled A Cowgirl Thanksgiving. The general arc has sisters who were part of a rodeo performance group including trick riding. They had a little bit of a falling out as they got older. Now their mother is being inducted into the rodeo hall of fame. The five books have the girls reuniting to perform one final performance as a group to honor their mom. My character wants to deny her past life and is resistant to coming back. Melinda Curtis is writing the first book of the series coming out in the summer of 2024, Carol Ross, the second one, Anna J. Stewart the third, I am the fourth, and Cari Lynn Webb is the last one.
I just sold a new series to Harlequin. It is set in the New England area based around a family-owned hotel. The first one comes out in the summer of 2025.
THANK YOU!!
