What inspired you to write it? (41 chapters!)

Oh no no no, I’d HATE to be that weirdo who wrote 400 pages worth of mario fanfiction! haughty laughter is then interrupted by 500 drawings of Lament Dimentio falling out of my pocket

Tbh what inspired me was. Myself? Weirdly enough? I mean of course SPM being my biggest interest was absolutely part of the reason why it’s so long and why I wrote it to begin with. But what specifically sparked the story of AJL was the fact there was an extremely specific type of Dimentio redemption story I was looking for. Of course, I’m not saying AJL is the first of its kind or something because it most definitely is not lmao😭😭 But there were just some things I preferred in an AU that tries to redeem Dimentio, and after searching for a while for, again, that extremely specific story, I thought, “DUDE JUST MAKE IT YOURSELF💀💀💀💀” and so I did. And a lot of people just ???? happened to like it??? :

Even though story length was one of my specific wants, I highly doubt I could’ve completed 41 chapters without the immense support I received. I genuinely cannot thank you guys enough. Seriously, if you like a fic, I highly highly reccomend commenting. You have no idea how much that means to writers 🤍

I’m putting this under a read more so I don’t clog people’s feed, but if anybody’s curious, some of my specific wants were:

- Length. I needed this fic to be almost unbearably long. I needed people to say GODDD DAAMMMNN when they looked at the word count.

- Dimentio somehow getting more unredeemable before he got redeemed (idk if I fully accomplished that, but I tried) (it’s hard to get worse than the complete annihilation of life) (I just tried not to purposefully write him in a likable way early on in the story)

- Dimentio dying the same amount of times he killed Luigi in the game

- Dimentio in general getting shit absolutely rocked

- Luigi not being a doormat, ESPECIALLY SINCE DIMENTIO ABUSED HIM

- DIMENTIO. BEING. IN. CHARACTER. THIS IS NOT JUST SOME SILLY GOOFY CLOWN!!! HE IS EVIL!!! HE TRIED TO KILL EVERY SINGLE ENTITY THAT HAS EVER EXISTED, DEAD AND ALIVE. HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE TERRIFYING AND SCARY!!! yes he’s naturally charming, write him as such, BUT NEVER FORGET THE THREAT HE IS!!!!

- Dimentio having a backstory that’s emo enough to explain the person he became but not emo enough to be his main source of redemption via pity if that makes sense. I think I achieved this? But of course that’s subjective, and looking back there were better ways to go about it. Basically what I tried to do is give him a good childhood with loving parents- minus the “accident” of course- and have Dimentio himself clarify in Chapter 15:

Basically: the loss of his family and the shit he went through definitely played a role. However, instead of a Blumiere-like “My loved one(s) died, now all worlds are without meaning and deserve to be destroyed,” Dimentio’s grief triggered a very deadly greed that did not revolve around the ones he lost. Blumiere’s motivation for destruction, including himself, was purely the loss of Timpani. Dimentio’s motivation for destruction, excluding himself, was, well, himself. For once, Dimentio wanted to earn, not lose. Making Dimentio have an understandable backstory but be “less sympathetic” than his counterpart, Blumiere, was important to me during the creation of AJL. But this gets extremely complicated because something like hmm uh idk erm MASS MURDER is impossible to truly make sympathetic. Regardless of intention, Dimentio and Blumiere did the exact same thing. Regardless of intention, Dimentio and Blumiere were both selfish. You can’t exactly destroy life itself in a non-selfish way. Both characters are equally unredeemable (or… equally redeemable, technically). Strip their actions down for their bones, and all you’ll see is two characters that tried to ERASE EXISTENCE. Sure, you can FEEL more sympathy for one than compared to the other, but feelings are subjective. Facts are objective. And the fact is, Dimentio and Blumiere attempted mass murder. You see why this is difficult to explain and even more difficult to write? I have a headache. God speed everybody

1. “Emotions are nothing but a distraction, you’re ruled by them. we’re taught to control them:” -Alec. in his own way, he’s got a point. he wasn’t able to complete the ritual or whatever so clary could get her memories. he may not be doing the best but his point is, he’s trying to control them so they don’t rule his entire being. but parabatai’s can’t fall in love (due to CC and her weird ass writing) (and the incest shit she loves) (and this is another reason why I hate Alec + jace pairing or whatever you want to call it)

2. Alec is in charge of the institute so if that means taking the portal necklace so Valentine can’t try to get in the institute, then that’s his responsibility. “If I were Valentine, I’d make you think that you could rescue Jocelyn. And then I’d lure clary to me and leverage her life for the cup.” this is actually funny because it’s almost what jace and clary do. they go and rescue Jocelyn and almost give Valentine the cup lmao

I get Jocelyn wanted to keep clary safe but she should have found a way to do that while also informing clary of dangers. it reminds me of Benedict and Tatiana Lightwood. he never trained her and taught her anything but to cry and scream revenge when she didn’t get her way. even if you don’t want her to be a shadowhunter, that’s her choice to make but at least prepare her

8. I do like these two being besties. I wouldn’t want to be clary’s bestie (I mean who would? I’d die by irritation) but I like this change. in the books Izzy is mean to clary (rightfully so) but clary is also rude to Izzy in the books. she doesn’t like Izzy mostly because she’s pretty, and clary makes a point to say this about Maia. I think it’s something “curvy and pretty? oh I hate her” it’s something above those lines. Clary is so fucking misogynistic in the books. she has internal thoughts about how guys are gross and misogynistic but she’s doing the exact same thing. that’s why I do like they changed this in the show

I find it almost ironic, in a positive way, how hostile and abusive you made Ivors mentor although villagers are notorious for their passive and peaceful demeanor.

It fits, oddly enough! In a physical sense they never hit back or hurt someone with the intent to hurt them. iirc in the Archillager Novel (official) the villagers are peaceful in means that they don't fight, but they do defend themselves and the CAN be VERBALY hostile. They might never pick up a weapon, but they sure can use their words to bully. They are avid gossipers too, as they are in game (reputation system spreading over multiple villages), so they CAN absolutely gnaw and destroy someones image or self-esteem.

They'd never attack physically, but they surely can be viscious to ones mentality.

At first I tilted my head at you making Ivors mentor a villager, a cleric, (unless I misremember), so hostile and abusing, but in hindsight it actually makes so much sense. Mental abuse goes below the skin down to the soul.

but no, no thank you very much! to be honest i had no idea the book was made and i knew that villagers don't fight back in-game but i know that that's just game mechanics. game mechanics don't necessarily have to be canon, as there's no way every single villager is going to have the exact same personality and act the same way in a realistic scenario. so i figured making a villager an extreme piece of shit would be plausible, even if they were a cleric. just because they're someone of religious stature does NOT mean they have to be nice. i mean, look at what the church did to people back in actual medieval history 💀

i haven't exactly worked out the entirety of his mentor's backstory. just that he's an alchemist in a very, very small plains village and provides all the people with his potions. he was the best one in the world and ivor's parents sent him a letter and gave him their life savings so that ivor could be taught alchemy. in turn, he became the best and overshadowed his mentor. the whole story is in my about page if you wanna read it, but i haven't dug too deep into the mentor himself. mainly because i'm searching for someone who will role play as him and dig into him with me so we can make ivor's backstory even more fleshed out together while his mentor becomes their oc. it's the BIGGEST fucking thing on my wishlist, fr.

i mean, technically his mentor could be a human? but i just felt like it would make more sense for it to be a villager. the villagers are the indigenous tribes of the story and hold a lot of history to them. ivor is very, very into the history of the world and what has happened in it, who has done what, what has been discovered. plus, his garb isn't AT ALL like the other order's; it's very old-looking even for mcsm terms. so i figured it would make a lot more sense to put him into a village. that way his craving for history, knowledge, and his vibe makes more sense.

it could have also been an illager? but that would mean it would have to be a witch. and ivor isn't really to big on witches.

i can’t wait until they don’t have to hide anymore. they deserve to be able to be together. i feel like this chapter is the first where they’ve been more honest with themselves about how they feel. obviously we don’t know exactly what yoongi’s thinking cause we don’t have his pov but it’s so obvious he’s different around her. he’s soft and understanding with her, something not a lot of other people get from him. and we know how reader feels. she technically admitted it at least twice in this one. i also feel like it’s a lot more obvious to both of them that they want to actually be together. like they know that the other person wants to be with them as bad as they want to be with the other. yk? they don’t say it out loud (at least not yet) but their actions speak so loudly. and the longing looks and touches definitely add more to it. they’re in deep and there’s no backing out now. i also feel like reader thinking yoongi couldn’t possibly feel the same way is somewhat her insecurities but also probably a bit of her trying to convince herself of that so it doesn’t seem so real.

i’m scared for when her brother gets back. i genuinely have no idea how things will be when he gets back. i’ve said before that i think yoongi and reader will become distant because they’re scared of what they’re feeling for each other but i’m not so sure anymore. i feel like yoongi would fight for her. if he started to feel her slipping through his fingers, he’d try to fix shit before he lost her. i could be totally off but that’s just what 3tan yoongi seems like. unless she 100% wanted to end things with him, then he’d respect her wishes even though it would hurt him.

with how serious they’re getting, i feel like it won’t be long until her brother finds out or they tell him. didn’t yoongi say in an ask that if shit started getting serious, they’d tell him? shit seems pretty serious now and brother gets back soon👀 are they gonna fess up and hopefully be able to finally be together?
