Ghost and Doc (Simon "Ghost" Riley x F!Reader)
Masterlist
(Part Twenty-Two)
Did y'all miss me? ;) Taglist is closed now!
Due to the time frame that comas involving alcohol usually occured in, you wanted to get your daughter a gift just in case she woke up. You were quite confident in the fact that she would be waking up soon- but who knows really, because Kennedy was in a damn coma.
Before you left the house, you showed the rest of the boys things that they could be doing. You had cable TV and YouTube available. There was also an Xbox 360 plugged into the wall with hundreds of games on it. “MineCraft is fun, why don’t you three play that together? It can be a team-building game, I suppose.”
“So, where are we going, (Y/n)?” Soap asked while staring out the window. It was nice for him to actually be able to look out the window and see the landscape. You know… since they all drive on the left side of the road.
You checked your GPS. “Target. They have some stuff that Kennedy would like there.” When Soap gave you a look of ‘what the hell is a target’ you laughed. “Do they not have one on your side of the world? Oh, that’s depressing. It’s like… er… Walmart?”
Soap nodded, seemingly embarrassed. “Got it.” He drummed his fingers on his thighs, then sighed. “About this morning, you and Ghost… I didn’t--”
“Yes you did,” you interrupted him before he could even say it. Soap shut his mouth real quick. Your fingers around the wheel tightened as you let out a deep sigh. “I’m sure Ghost is a fine man outside of work, but the only person I know him as is… Lieutenant Ghost- okay? He seems to keep his outside life private too, it seems impossible to intrude on that- and I don’t want to intrude on that.” Your shoulders tensed as the light turned red, and knowing this one would last a while, you turned to Soap. “You should know the issue of rank as well, John. No superior can ever be with anyone that is ranked less than them, it’s written in the handbook.”
Damn. It sounded like you had taken a lot of time to consider this, but you made sure to put out that you (sort of) weren’t interested. “Wait- I’m confused. Ignoring rank… would you go after a man like Ghost?”
Ignoring rank… You jumped when someone honked at you and started the drive forward again. “Depends, John. Is Ghost a man who wants someone in his life like that?”
-
You ended up getting her some Pokemon cards, as you were teaching her how to play and trade when she would come over to the house. You also got one of the electronic dogs that a kid would pretend-take care of. The lady that was at the check-out wanted you to have gone to self…
“Awww, is it y’all’s daughter’s birthday? How cute…” Soap muttered something that you couldn’t understand as you just smiled at the woman. “Have a nice day!”
The next trip would be to the hospital. You yourself wanted to talk to the doctor that was taking care of Kennedy, which would leave a little time before talking with the legal team. You gave Soap a mask then put one around your own mouth.
Shawn and Kiara were not at the hospital- thankfully, so you and technically Soap had the room to yourselves. He took a seat in one of the chairs, fiddling with the pokemon deck not opened with furrowed brows. You were talking outside of the room with the doctor, someone who actually knew what was going on.
“I’m sorry to say that she hasn’t woken up yet, we’re honestly surprised here.” The doctor, Johnson, said while rubbing her arms. “We’re not sure she will wake up at this rate, Ms. (L/n).” Her eyes met yours- and she could see the tears forming.
You knew about the effects of alcohol and children. Their little bodies can’t handle the contents of what’s in the bottle, no matter what. It’s why you told Shawn to get a fucking liquor cabinet and keep alcohol in something that Kennedy couldn’t reach or mess with. “It’s just some alcohol poisoning… she has to wake up.” You turned around to look at your daughter.
Dr. Johnson left you at that note, saying to press the red button if you needed anything or if anything changed with Kennedy. You walked back into the room and plopped into the chair next to Soap, resting your head on his shoulder. He didn’t pull back, but looked down at you in confusion. “Any… good news?”
“They have doubts about her waking up,” you mumbled. Your watch beeped, indicating that it was 1:50pm. Just ten minutes before the people would arrive. “I’m one of the worst mothers to ever exist.”
Oh god. Soap rubbed your shoulder in reassurance, not sure what to do other than that. “You… You weren’t here so you can’t blame yourself. And your ex-husband just… he doesn’t seem like the brightest individual.” You snorted. “Don’t beat yourself up too hard about it, okay?”
You hummed, then lifted your head from his shoulder. “Thanks, John.” The man nodded then turned his attention to the door, where two people in suits were standing. “Umm… do you mind waiting outside for this? I’ll fill you in. I don’t even think you can be here for this.”
Soap nodded again, then walked out of the room, giving one last look at the situation and your daughter. “Let me know if you need me.” Then the door closed.
You redirected your seat onto the hospital bed next to Kennedy while the two suits took the seats you and Soap had. They took out a folder from a briefcase, cleared their throats, then sighed. “(Y/n) (L/n), I presume?”
A/N: Fun fact about you in this story. What helps you cope with things is comfort. It's why you're so touchy :)

Friday Special #5
December 18th, 2020
Welcome back to another Friday Special!
For this week, we’ll be looking into the history of cheat codes and what happened to them.
Tumblr media
So what exactly are cheat codes? What qualifies as a cheat code?
In the most basic definition, cheat codes are usually a set of numbers, words, or phrases that, if a video game allowed them, would allow certain abilities or rewards to happen based on the code entered. For example, rewards could be something like infinite lives or all weapons/costumes/etc. unlocked.
According to history, the first recorded instance of a video game cheat code was in the video game Computer Space alllllll the way back in 1971. It was installed into the software and could only be accessed while holding the two buttons to the left while the machine was booting up to make your score start at 14. This tidbit of information however is difficult to prove as it only worked on a handful of machines.
Cheat codes were not always about given more “freedom” to players.
Did you know that they originally started out as developer tools?
Other early examples of cheat codes were ones like Colossal Cave Adventure, a text-based adventure game where if you inputted XYZZY, it would teleport the player between two places, or for a game like Manic Miner where if the player inputted the number code 6031769 (sources vary between some saying it was creator Matt Smith’s phone number and others say the last few numbers of his driver’s license) into the title card and press enter, it would allow the player to shift between the six levels of the game.
The original purpose of cheat codes were meant for developers to quickly move from one section of the game to another as well as video game reviewers to properly see through the different parts of a game to review and score it properly in gaming magazines.
Cheat codes at the time were pretty simple and not given much thought.
Then everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked when the Konami Code was first introduced.
Just about everyone and their mother knows about the legendary Konami Code, but just in case you don’t, it was a special code combination first introduced in 1986 for the game Gradius as a way to test the game during the early stages. The code is:
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start
It was created by Kazuhisa Hashimoto (he passed away back in February of this year, rest in peace) and although it didn’t gain popularity then, a little game called Contra was where the Konami Code really started to send shockwaves all across the Western gaming world.
In the original Contra, if the Konami Code was used, your three lives were boosted to thirty, making the impossible game more manageable to play. The code became so widespread with immense popularity that Hashimoto insisted that from then on that every single Konami game would input the cheat code in its programming.
This kickstarted what would become a more modern definition of what cheat codes would be.
Tumblr media
The Konami Code would be so famous it even found its way into non-Konami titles such as Bioshock Infinite, Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, and even Fortnite Battle Royale. Several famous Konami IPs that feature the code include the likes of Castlevania, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, and even DDR (Dance Dance Revolution).
So what are some other famous types of cheat codes?
Sometimes the cheat code in question can provide some content that has been hidden away. Take the debug mode in the first Sonic the Hedgehog game for instance. The way to access the debug mode was to input the following code:
Press ↑ C Button, ↓ C Button  ← C Button → C Button on Title Screen
A ring chime can be heard
Hold then A Button  down and press start button
The game begins with Debug Mode
The debug menu became a rather popular feature for SEGA Genesis players, mainly for the chaos that ensued where you could alter parts of the game without bricking your cartridge and console.
Tumblr media
Now to the more controversial stuff.
When Mortal Kombat was first released in arcades back in 1992, it was immediately hounded by enraged parents and politicians alike for its graphic violence and abundance of blood for the famous “Fatality” scenes, thus paving the way for the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) rating system for video games. When the game started to get ported to various consoles, Nintendo of America, being the same stickler for family-friendly content, censored the blood in the SNES port. SEGA, on the other hand, decided to use the cheat code route, and while the blood is censored upon boot-up, you enact the cheat code to bring back the blood. The code below:
ABACABB
This code famously became known as the Blood Code and this along with other factors made the SEGA Genesis version of Mortal Kombat so popular.
Tumblr media
Wait! What if a game can do cheats but not just by using button combinations?
This is where cheat code devices come in.
The first recorded instance of a cheat device was in the form of the ‘Multiface’, which found its home on the likes of consoles like the ZX Spectrum. There were different variants over the years that added better and better quality to the device itself. Due to its success, similar devices made their way to the market like the ‘Freezer’ for the Commodore systems and the ‘Darth Vader’ unit (yes, it was actually called that) for the Atari 2600.
If you owned an NES/SNES/Game Boy/Mega Drive at the time, you would’ve heard about the Game Genie, which was the next major cheat device to be created. The player would put the game in the Game Genie slot and then insert the device into the console itself. You could then up your game depending on what game you had. Although they are a by-gone relic of gaming history, it still paved the way for similar devices.
When you think of the name Action Replay, those who had an original DS or a DSi probably had one of these devices, however the device is actually much older than that, dating back to its original release back in the late 1980s with its first appearance on the Commodore systems. It has since release on consoles like Nintendo DS, Gamecube, Gameboy Advance, Playstation Portable, and even the Xbox 360 and Playstation 2!
If you were a kid in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, you would’ve had the Game Shark. This cheat device was primarily known for its appearance on the Nintendo 64, but it was also widely used for the original Playstation and Playstation 2 as well as the original Xbox and Game Boy/Game Boy Color. You could even bypass the region-locked security using it, which can allow you to play any game from any region.
Tumblr media
So what happened to cheat codes, and why don’t we see them anymore?
Well, they didn’t go away completely, as they can sometimes be found in some video games, rather they just fell out of style. See, as we approach to today’s gaming culture, cheat codes are nowadays hidden behind higher-level programming and it is no longer able to be manipulated by average players. This was done as video games became bigger and more complex, going past just some programming and the developer tools were now locked away so that the game doesn’t get altered so much it crashes. This started to become more prevalent in the mid-2000s and onward. As mentioned before, cheat codes originally started as a way for developers to go across different levels in order to fix coding or bugs. They are still being used, they’re just not for open use like they used to be.
Cheat codes have changed the gaming world and are still remembered fondly by players even to this day with the rise in retro gaming in recent years. Here’s to hoping they can come back someday.
Thoughts From The Head
Cheat codes have always been a part of my gaming experience growing up for as long as I can remember. I remember the Book Fairs that my elementary school hosted every year and I remember getting some cheat code books for games. They have unfortunately been lost to time but i do miss them fondly.
I also have memories of cheat devices, the Action Replay for the original DS for example. I used that sucker to use the ‘Complete Pokedex’ cheat for Pokemon Pearl as well as ‘Infinite Health’ cheat in Kirby Super Star Ultra. That was later unfortunately lost as my dad tossed it out, saying “it wasn’t good for anything”. Jokes on him, that device alone is easily $30-40 online, and higher in some cases.
Thanks dad.
I do have a cheat device in my possession for my original Playstation and it’s the original Game Shark. I received it for free at my local video game store since they had no real use for it and it was “Flashed” which meant that it was slightly different and was capable of playing burned and imported games (which I had). I have not had a chance to test it yet because I do not have a game to really test it on yet (plus the text is kinda odd, see photos). I will try to give it a shot this weekend and see if I can come up with anything.

CHAPTER 6: CHRISTMAS PRESENT
Tumblr media
Chapter 6: 6784 Words
Fic Total: 21340 Words
Series Total: 21340 Words
The next day was the start of the weekend and I had decided that because I'd been so stressed lately it's time for me to get an Xbox 360 again. Even though I'm no longer doing any new freelance programming jobs I still have quite a bit of money I saved up.
I was in the middle of setting up the TV in my room when Dunc called. "Blue Jay." I said.
"Busy today?" He asked.
I thought for a moment about the breakfast at lunchtime conversation I had with Wilson.
___
"I've got to say the fact you're not lactose intolerant but just don't like milk is slightly concerning." Wilson commented.
I glanced up from my bowl of lucky charms (without milk of course). "I don't know what to tell you man it's just gross. I just don't like most dairy." I said with a shrug.
"What dairy do you like?" Wilson asked, looking more concerned.
"Oh easy cheese and ice cream." I said.
Wilson stared at me blankly for a few seconds. "That reminds me you need a physical." He said.
I set the spoon down. "Like a check-up?" I asked.
"Yes." He said.
"Can we just not do that? I mean like you guys are Doctors I'm sure I'm fine like-" I started to say.
"You're joining the Cheerleaders. They're going to need a physical." Wilson said simply.
Ah no, he's got me there. I groaned.
Wilson looked confused. "You volunteer at PPTH, you met House as a patient in the free clinic, you don't seem to be afraid of Doctors." He said.
"Yeah I know but that was for my wrist. Physicals you have to you know… and like I'm trans so it's just awkward because I'll have to explain that to whatever Doctor it is and like God forbid if they're low key transphobic or not you know?" I ranted but then remembered that Wilson is also trans. So he just kinda stared at me like “yeah I know”.
"Well, you already know all of House's Team isn't transphobic." Wilson said.
He's right there. "But do I have to?" I pleaded.
"Yes. Schedule it with one of them today." He said.
I groaned again before getting back to my cereal.
___
"Uhh I have one thing to do at PPTH." I said.
"Oh? Care to elaborate?" Dunc asked over the phone.
I huffed and put him on speaker while I started to set up the Xbox 360. "I have to schedule a physical with one of House's Team."
"In person?" He asked.
"Well I don't exactly have any of their numbers. I've never asked and they haven't offered I'm a teenager. What adult is going to offer a teenager they barely know their phone number? Makes them look like a pedophile or something I don't know." I rambled. I have Kutner's but he's out of town right now anyway.
"Can't you just call the hospital?" He asked.
"I'm like 95% House would pick up the phone so no thanks. Hi yes Dad what I've never called you Dad before oops. Well I'm NOT calling you. I'm here to talk to your Team because I hate you. That would go great." I joked.
"You haven't called him Dad before?" Dunc asked.
"Okay look I didn't know him for the first 16 years of my life and I've been calling him House since I've met him like at what point do I call him Dad? Is there like a guideline because I'd really like to know this shit is so confusing, Dunc you have no idea." I complained.
"Hmm yeah I guess that kinda sucks." He said.
"Okay but like if I did call House Dad like I had no idea how he'd react. The man might just die for all I know." I joked.
Dunc laughed. "Yeah let me know so I can record it."
"Sure thing." I said.
"Want back up?" He asked.
"You asking because you're really that bored or because you want to watch the shit show?" I asked.
"Can't it be both?" He said.
I sighed. "Yeah sure meet you there in an hour?"
"Sounds good." He said and hung up.
Well maybe it will be a little easier with Dunc there.
~~~
I was idling in the lobby of PPTH waiting for Dunc to show up. The reason that House and his team were even here today on a weekend was because of a case. I wasn't too sure of the details of this one but apparently something happened late last night.
"Take the bus?" I asked Dunc as he walked into the lobby taking off his scarf.
"Unlike you I don't have a parking spot." He grumbled.
Yeah apparently with the amount of volunteer hours I was logging I got a parking spot. It was far away but a free parking spot nonetheless. "You could've asked me to pick you up." I said.
"Your car is a piece of shit dude." Dunc replied as we made our way to the elevator.
I rolled my eyes as I pressed the button. I mean the car works just fine, that's all I could really ask for. "Not all of us are rich like you Lestrade." I said.
"Really? Because Wilson told me who your Uncle was and from what I heard when he died his money went to your Mother which I assume has gone to you now." He said as we got into the empty elevator.
I watched the doors close. I figured this would catch up to me at some point. Going to a school full of rich kids. I figured Ivy was the one who was going to figure it out though. I mean she was the one that found out about Dr. King. "I'm not exactly sure what's happening with the money." I said.
Dunc looked confused. "Why?"
"Uh I bailed from Minnesota the day after my Mom died. I've been a little preoccupied." I said.
The elevator doors open to the floor we were going to. "Why did you even bother looking for your Father if you had that much money?" Dunc asked.
"Because I don't know if I do!" I exclaimed.
A few people turned to look at us which made me freeze up of course.
"What do you mean you don't know if you do?" Dunc said quietly.
I glanced around and the few people who were watching us looked the other way. "Money was a very sensitive topic in my family. I'm not talking about this now." I said and made my way to the DDX Room.
Thankfully House wasn't there. Thirteen and Taub were the only ones in the room at the moment. Thirteen was on the computer and Taub was reading some files. "Looking for House?" Thirteen said without moving her eyes from the computer.
"Who's that?" Taub asked about Dunc.
"Uh no and this-" I started but Dunc cut me off.
"A friend Duncan Lestrade. I'm also one of Dr. Wilson patients." He introduced me.
"We both go to Princeton Prep." I said.
"You go to Princeton Prep?" Taub asked.
I looked at him blankly. Does House never talk about me? I mean that's fine I don't really care but I feel like the fact that I wear the uniform around the hospital a lot would shed some light on the subject. "Yes?"
"He pays for that?" Thirteen asked, surprised.
"I'm there on scholarship." I said with a sigh.
The looks on both of their faces went from confused to oh that makes a lot more sense.
"What do you need?" Taub asked.
I looked back and forth between the two of them. Jeez I hate this.
"He needs to schedule a physical to join the Cheerleaders." Dunc said for me.
I glared at him. I did NOT want the hospital to know I was joining the Cheerleaders just yet. I guess it's not too surprising I mean after the whole Spider-Man thing but still.
"Cheerleaders?" Taub asked.
Great job Dunc. Great job. "I used to be a gymnast." I said softly.
Taub just looked shocked but Thirteen wasn't. "When are you available?" She asked.
I blinked. "I'm here every Wednesday and Friday and most Tuesdays and Thursdays." I said.
"Next Wednesday at 3 work?" Thirteen asked.
I pulled out my phone to double-check my calendar. "Yes." I said and put it in the calendar.
I muttered thanks on my way out of the DDX Room with Dunc.
"See, was that hard?" Dunc said.
"Did you have to tell them I was joining the Cheerleaders?" I huffed.
"I mean they'll find out soon enough." He shrugged.
"I'm not so sure anymore. Like they didn't even know I went to Princeton Prep." I said.
"Yeah, that was a little weird." Dunc said. "Oh and next year you won't be able to volunteer on Fridays."
"Why?" I asked.
"Football games duh." He said.
Oh right yeah. This is going to be interesting.
~~~
I rested my head in my hands after I sat down at the lunch table. I was a bit of an idiot last night and stayed up all night gaming on my Xbox 360. Because it's December I was trying to figure out a Christmas present for House and I thought some gaming would help… It didn't. I just got no sleep and zero ideas. Wilson is easy enough. I have some props from some musicals that my Uncle gave to me a while back. Sure it's regifting but like he's more into that stuff than me. I even have some ideas for House's Team, Dunc and Ivy but House? No clue.
"What's bothering you?" Ivy asked.
I guess you could say Ivy has become my friend now? Despite her being the Cheerleading Captain she actually doesn't have many friends because she tends to piss people off. You could literally stab Dunc and he wouldn't care and I have House for a Father so it's gonna take a lot for her to piss us off.
"Trying to think of a Christmas present for House. I was up all night thinking about it." I mumbled.
"Really? I thought you were up all night playing Dragon Age Origins." Dunc said.
I glared at him. I bought the game recently. "I can multitask."
"Clearly not very well." He said.
"Yeah well, you try having House as a Father for a day and come back to me." I said.
"Can I have Wilson instead?" Dunc joked.
"No. He's actually nice." I mumbled.
Ivy looked back and forth between us. "Isn't Wilson your Doctor?" She asked Dunc.
"Yeah." He said with a shrug.
Ivy thought for a moment. "How did you two meet?" She asked.
I laughed. "Oh man, that was hilarious. You remember that Dunc."
"Pfft, how could I? I almost died from second-hand embarrassment." He said.
"Yeah, I'm so glad Wilson didn't judge me too hard on that first impression."
"Dude that's how you met Wilson?!" Dunc exclaimed.
"Unfortunately." I sighed.
"What happened?" Ivy asked, clearly annoyed that we were leaving her in the dark.
"Right so what happened was this-"
___
Part of me really wished I didn't mention that I was good with computers to Dr. Cuddy when I asked her about volunteering. Once she heard that she totally glanced over everything I said about wanting to become a Doctor someday so it would be nice to see something medical related… Yeah she immediately stuck me with Bill The IT Guy because he's like the only IT person for the whole hospital so he's a BIT overwhelmed. But you know it's fine.
The main issue I'm having now is that Bill is having me running around the hospital a lot and well I really don't know the place that well yet. Yeah I don't know it at all. I mean sure I can find my way to the lobby like 60% of the time but that's about it. I'm currently lost again. I was just grabbing myself a Mountain Dew and a Coffee for Bill at the cafeteria but got lost on my way to IT. Man I've been on so many floors today I'm not even sure what floor it's on anymore.
I turned around a few times trying to look for one of the floor signs that are usually all over the place but apparently are never there when you need them to be. If I was going to guess I was in Oncology. Because you know…
I finally found a floor sign and went over to it but unfortunately IT wasn't on there. I forgot it never freaking is. No one ever goes to IT. I did notice a cute guy my age staring at me from one of the couches. Must be taking a break from his room. I wasn't paying attention when I turned back around so that I bumped into a Doctor spilling the Coffee that I had got for Bill on him. "Oh God I'm so sorry." I said, my face turning bright red. I scrambled to get something to help clean up the mess.
"Hey it's no problem. New volunteer?" He asked, pointing at my badge.
"Y-Yeah Jay Flynn. Helping out Bill in IT because I told Dr. Cuddy I was good with computers but I do kinda wish I could be doing something else." I said without thinking. Wow Jay why the fuck did you just tell him that. He's probably going to tell Dr. Cuddy you just messed everything up.
"Ah well Bill can use all the help he can get. I'm Dr. Wilson by the way. You lost?" He asked.
My face got even redder. "Yeah I forgot where IT is." I mumbled.
"Oh that would be an issue. I guess the coffee was for Bill?" He said.
I just nodded.
"Right well-" Wilson started to say but was interrupted by the cute guy I saw earlier.
"I can show him where IT is Wilson." He said.
Wilson looked at the guy. "Have you had a walk yet?"
"No." He said.
Wilson squinted. "Alright fine."
The cute guy waited for Dr. Wilson to turn the corner before speaking up again. "Okay here's the deal. I can help you out but I need you to help me out."
I blinked. "What?"
"Right so I noticed your Princeton Prep uniform you wear around here and like dude really get some other clothes. But you might've heard of me, I'm Duncan Lestrade." He started.
Right okay wow he's just gonna do this right here right now. "Uh yeah, the dude with cancer." I said.
"Obviously. Anyway. I overheard some of your conversation with Wilson and I assume you're volunteering here because our school's medical club sucks ass." He went on.
I nodded.
"Right so I can put a word in for you with Wilson and Cuddy about volunteering over in Oncology if you tutor me in Science." He finished.
I thought for a moment. "So you're assuming that because I'm volunteering at a hospital I want to be a Doctor so I must be good at Science?" I asked.
"Am I wrong?" He asked.
"Well no but like…"
"What's the problem then?" He said.
I huffed. "Okay fine deal but I'm not calling you Lestrade like everyone else does at school."
"Why?" He asked.
"I don't know it sounds kind of classy, I don't really like it." I said.
"You go to a school full of rich people and you don't like classy?" He asked.
"I'm there on scholarship." I said.
"Hm all the more reason for you to tutor me… Jay Flynn." He said while pulling on my badge.
I pulled my badge back. "Okay, Dunc." I said.
"Really you're going to call me Dunc? I haven't been called that since I was like 6." He said.
"Yeah? Well, get used to it Dunc." I said with a smirk.
___
"You didn't even know where IT was." I said throwing a fry at Dunc.
"I obviously needed an excuse to talk to you." He said.
"He acted like such a rich prick at first." I said to Ivy.
"Yeah, I was kinda surprised when I heard the Football Kicker was hanging out with the new scholarship nerd and that you two weren't like together or anything." She said.
"I mean he was tutoring me." Dunc said.
"Oh come on everyone knows what tutoring means half of the time." She scoffed.
"What?" I asked.
Both of them looked at me. "God for how smart you're supposed to be you are so oblivious sometimes." Ivy said.
"People thought we were hooking up?" I squeeked.
"Yeah, I had to set the record straight." Dunc explained.
I looked at the two of them blankly. God, I have no idea about the drama that goes on in this school, do I? I get a bit of The PPTH drama from eavesdropping and House and Wilson but I don't really care too much. I'm more focused on my own life that has more than enough of its own drama. "You didn't think to mention it to me?" I said.
"You were uh dealing with stuff at the time." Dunc said.
I just stared at him.
"You know, coming out to House." He said.
Oh right. "Oh Ivy knows Dunc. She found out about my gymnastic past so there's stuff about me being trans. Man, that sucks that I'm constantly being outed." I complained.
"Couldn't you like change your last name?" Ivy asked.
I froze. I mean yes obviously but like the most reasonable one to change it to would be House and… "Hi for Christmas I'd like your last name House." I joked.
Dunc snorted.
"Just become a fae and steal it. You're Irish right?" Ivy joked.
"Ah yeah, simple let me just become a fae real quick." I shot back.
"We've somehow circled back to Christmas presents." Dunc pointed out.
"Ugh right, what the hell am I going to get him." I grumbled.
"A name change obviously." Ivy said.
"Ha very funny." I said.
"What's he like?" Dunc asked, trying to be helpful.
I sighed. "Yeah I thought about that but like… All I really know about is Motorcycles, Monster Trucks and Music."
Ivy stared at me for a moment. "Monster Trucks?"
"Yeah, apparently he likes to watch those I don't know." I said with a shrug.
"And you hate Motorcycles." Dunc said.
I nodded.
"Music is vague." Ivy said.
"He plays Guitar and Piano. Listens to a bunch of stuff but uh hates musicals so that's something that he and Wilson don't agree on." I explained.
"Oh, so Wilson is a musical gay shocking." Dunc joked.
"I'm pretty positive he's Bi first of all." I said.
"I'm just saying." He said.
I rolled my eyes. The bell rang signaling that lunch was over. "Well, that was no help thanks though." I said standing up.
"Sorry I can't always save your ass." Dunc said.
I scoffed. "Right gotcha."
He winked at me.
Ivy rolled her eyes. "Oh get a room."
~~~
"Bill?" I said after I walked into IT and didn't notice him right away. I set down my backpack and Mountain Dew but kept holding the coffee that I grabbed on my way up for Bill.
"Servers." A muffled Scottish accent said.
"I'll leave the coffee out here then." I said before making my way to the server closet. I leaned against the door. "What's up?"
"Just checking a few things." Bill said looking at me. "Slow day."
"Because of all of my help clearly." I joked.
"Ah well, the coffee is nice." He said with a smirk.
"Ouch, I'm hurt." I said and fakingly clutched my chest.
"Get out of my server closet." He said shooing me out of the doorway.
"Don't have to tell me twice to leave a closet." I joked.
"Ack you and your gay jokes. I guess it makes sense living with House and Wilson." He commented after locking the closet.
"Mmm, I had two Moms at one point. If I turned out to be straight that would have been surprising." I said.
Bill just sighed. "Well, I don't have anything for you to do. Does Wilson?"
"Nah he's sick of me too." I said and sat down and the desk that I have slowly taken over. I mean the dude's got a pretty big workspace just to himself so there are multiple desks.
Bill took a sip of the coffee I got for him. "Need help with school work?" He offered.
I just stared at him. Now Bill and I are, you know, friendly with each other. I'm like some of the only social interaction the man gets on some days but like normally we just shoot a few sarcastic comments at each other and he tells me to go off and fix something somewhere. But like I'm a teenager and he's like older than House. Sure I'm a bit curious how a Scottish IT Guy ended up at PPTH but I've been too busy to ask around. "How slow has it been?" I asked.
"Slow enough I've been debating calling my Ex." He complained.
I blinked. Ex? Bill is just telling me about himself? What? I sat up a little. "I mean I know I'm only 16 but like that's probably not a great idea?" I said.
"Eh it wouldn't go anywhere anyway she's in London last I heard." Bill said.
Okay, now I'm curious. "So like-" I started but was cut off by my phone. "Uh, one sec."
Warning on the way to PPTH w Ivy. Found out about ur Uncle. Can hold off 4 bit.
DL
My face fell. Ah great. I don't really want to deal with this right now. House and Wilson still haven't caught on to the fact that I should probably have a bunch of money. Or if they have they haven't mentioned it.
"Who found out about what?" Bill asked.
I looked up. "What?"
"You're not that hard to read Blue Jay." He said.
"My friends found out something about my family and are on their way here." I said.
"House?" He asked.
"No something on my Mom's side it's complicated." I said.
"Try me." Bill said.
I texted back that I was at IT but to take their time. "Right so you know how I go to Princeton Prep?" I said.
Bill nodded.
"Right so I'm there on an academic scholarship. The reason I applied was because you know stuff with House being my Father." I said.
Bill was going to ask a question about that but I stopped him. "Look I don't have time to go into that." I huffed. "Anyway my Uncle was a pretty famous musical actor that died in a helicopter crash a while back. When he died his money went to my Mom. And when my Mom died the logical conclusion would be that I would inherit that money. So I assume my friend Ivy is about to tear me a new one for acting all weird about rich people when I'm probably rich." I explained.
Bill just stared at me for a moment. "Jay what your friends think about you having money or not is not that big of a problem."
Oh, he's right actually. This is like the least of my problems. "That's uh pretty helpful." I mumbled.
"I can be sometimes." Bill said. He stood up and threw away the empty coffee cup. "How long until they get here?"
"Well assuming Ivy's driving not long." I sighed.
Bill raised an eyebrow. "Fast driver?"
"From what I've heard." I said.
"Well good luck." Bill said while making his way to the door.
"Wait hold up you leaving me?" I asked.
"As much as I'd love to stay and hear about your high school drama I'm needed in one of the lecture halls. Don't forget to lock up when you leave" Bill said and left me alone.
This is going to be great.
10 minutes later Ivy smashed through the door with Dunc mouthing a Sorry shortly behind. "You failed to mention who your Uncle was." She said.
I looked up from my history textbook. "You never asked."
"Lestrade knew!" Ivy exclaimed.
"Wilson mentioned it to him. Not that I wanted him to." I said.
"Here you are this whole time with this 'Oh I'm not Rich Superiority Complex' when in reality you're probably richer than the both of our families combined." Ivy ranted.
I slammed the history textbook on the desk and stood up. "Look Ivy. There's a lot of reasons why I don't like talking about this but if you really want me to go into it I will." I said.
"Explain yourself." Ivy said now in my face.
"Now obviously even if I do have a bunch of money which I mentioned to Dunc I'm not even entirely sure I do. I'd much rather have my Uncle or Mother instead. Connor's money was always a sore subject for my Mom because her being a Single Mom with lots of student loans she had to come to him for help. She never wanted to. Mom was going to pay him back even though Connor said it was unnecessary but then he died and she got all of his money. Mom never touched it. I know she thought about donating it but she was so busy and never had the time to figure out what to do with it. I grew up middle class. The idea of having a lot of money is foreign to me." I explained.
The two of them stood there for a while. No one wanting to break the silence. "Look I'm sorry for misleading you two I just don't know how to handle these things very well." I said.
"Right well how about we all get something to eat." Dunc said.
"I guess that sounds like a plan." Ivy said.
I was about to say I'm still volunteering but Bill walked in. "Ah are these your two friends?" He asked.
"Uh yeah. Duncan Lestrade and Ivy Adler." I said.
"Bill Baxter. I really don't have anything for you to do Jay. You should go have fun with your friends. You won't be a teenager for much longer." He said.
"I uh but-" I started.
"No buts get out." He said.
"Right okay I guess we will get something to eat then." I said.
~~~
I was having trouble making eye contact with Thirteen. We've already done the more invasive parts of the physical but I'm just uncomfortable anyway. We're just in the middle of the questions now.
"Smoke?" She asked.
"No." I said.
"Drink." She asked.
"No." I said.
"Sexually Active?" She asked.
"No." I said.
"Thoughts of harming yourself or others?" She asked.
I paused. Technically no I haven't gotten that far yet but… "No."
Thirteen looked at me clearly noticing my hesitation. "Jay you can be honest with me. You've lost a parent it's not unusual to be experiencing-" She started.
"I'm fine." I said looking at her.
"Wilson told me he's worried." She said.
Of course, he did. I crossed my arms. "He worries about everything. Dude's not even my Dad." I said.
"If you need to talk to someone Jay you can. Doesn't matter who but I'd recommend maybe avoiding House." She said.
Yeah, House probably wouldn't be the best person to talk to.
"Can we move on?" I sighed.
She looked at me for a moment before continuing. "Do you feel unsafe at home?" She asked.
"No." I said.
~~~
After Cheerleading practice Ivy decided to drag me to the mall for Christmas shopping. Seeing as I'm still trying to figure out a present for House , I reluctantly agreed. "This is it?" I asked once we were in the Mall.
Ivy gave me a weird look as we went down the escalator. "Yes?"
"Kinda small." I said with a shrug.
"Aren't you from the Midwest? Malls must be tiny there?" She said.
"Ah well, fun fact about Minnesota is that we were the first State to have a fully enclosed indoor Mall. On top of that, I was a short drive away from The Mall of America so I was a little spoiled." I explained.
"Why do you know such random shit?" Ivy asked as we wandered into some clothing store.
"Dunno. I have a pretty good memory but like I don't really get to choose what I remember." I said.
"So your brain thinks random facts about Malls in Minnesota is important?" She questioned.
"I guess. On the bright side, I'm pretty good at trivia." I said.
Ivy just rolled her eyes. "Anyway. You have feelings for Lestrade?" She asked suddenly.
I froze just holding a random shoe in my hand. "What kind of feelings?" I played dumb.
Ivy was unamused with my attempt at playing dumb. "It's fairly obvious you have a crush on him."
"I don't know what you're talking about." I lied while setting the shoe down.
"I'm pretty positive he feels the same way." Ivy continued.
"Ha someone having a crush on me? Funny." I joked.
Ivy just rolled her eyes. "Not like you'd ever be the one to make the first move anyway."
"I know that's a sound analysis but it still hurts a little." I huffed.
"Right well you figure out a gift for House yet?" She asked.
"No. We should probably pop in the music store." I said.
"Sounds like a plan." Ivy said.
Thankfully I finally found the perfect thing at the music store.
~~~
I never really mentioned it to House or Wilson but I do enjoy Christmas quite a bit. It's not my favorite holiday. Halloween is that but I don't know there's something about it. It is a bit more somber for me personally this year because it's the first Christmas without my Mom but I'm trying to ignore that fact. So on Christmas Eve, I made my way to PPTH to drop off my presents I got for Kutner, Thirteen, Taub, Foreman, Cuddy, Chase, and of course Bill. I was humming to the Christmas songs on my iPod as I made my way to my first stop, Dr. Cuddy.
Now I know that Cuddy, Taub, and Wilson are Jewish but they all seem to be mostly non practicing for the most part. And I don't think anyone can really argue with receiving a gift right?
I took out my earbuds and knocked on the door. "Come in." Cuddy said.
"Hey." I said while walking up to her desk.
"Oh, Jay I wasn't expecting you. Nice hat." She said.
Yeah, I decided to wear my Santa hat today seeing as I'm dropping off a bunch of gifts. "Thanks! I'm just dropping off a quick gift." I said and pulled the present out of my backpack. Normally I wear my messenger bag to PPTH but I needed a bigger bag… I set the present on her desk.
"Oh wow! I didn't know you were getting anything." She said.
"Uh, no need to get me anything. I just like to give people gifts on Christmas you know. Besides you've been really nice to me and you definitely didn't have to." I said while rubbing the back of my neck.
"You know it really is a wonder how you're related to House sometimes." She joked.
"I'm a prime example of nature vs nurture." I joked back. "I need to get going though I got more people to get to." I said.
"How many people did you get gifts for?" She asked.
"Uhhh… besides House, Wilson, and my friends. Seven people?" I said while counting on my fingers.
"That's a lot." She said looking surprised.
"I guess it is. Isn't it." I said before leaving.
Next on my list is Chase. Hopefully, he's not in the middle of surgery right now.
I found him on his way out of an OR on his way to get some food. "Chase!" I called.
"Oh hey there Blue Jay." He said.
"Not gonna take up too much of your time but I got you a small thing for Christmas." I said and handed Chase the present.
"Never thought I'd see the day I'd get a Christmas present from a House." He joked.
"I mean my last name is technically Flynn but sure." I said.
"Well, thanks Jay." He said.
"Yeah, no problem dude." I said with a thumbs up before running off down the hallway.
I went into IT with You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch blaring from my iPod. Or a least as much as an iPod could. "You're A Mean One Mr. Baxter" I sang along as a joke.
Bill looked at me with an eyebrow raised. "Didn't realize you thought of me that way Mr. Flynn." He said.
"Sorry, it's my favorite Christmas song." I said with a shrug.
"That's your favorite Christmas song?" He asked.
"What can I say? It's a bop." I said.
Bill rolled his eyes. "Why are you here anyway? It's your Christmas break and I would love to not be working." He asked.
"Ah well, you see." I said and pulled out the present. "I have this for you."
"Oh." Bill said.
"Yeah think fast." I said and threw it at him.
Bill caught the present with no hesitation. "I never really took you as the gifting type." He said.
"Well, I always love to subvert expectations." I said and did a curtsy. "Anyway, I have one more stop so bye." I said and waved Bill off.
~~~
Thankfully House's Team was all there. They were doing a differential diagnosis so it makes sense that they would be. I walked in quietly trying to not interrupt. Also because seeing a real differential diagnosis live would be pretty cool.
All of them did take note of me walking in but kept shooting off ideas anyway. House shot most of them down for various reasons. "Do you four really have nothing better than that? I bet Jay could come up with something better and he's only sitting in on medical classes." House ranted at them before turning to me.
All of them were now staring at me.
I looked blankly at House. "You actually want a suggestion?" I asked.
He waved his hand in front of the whiteboard.
I set down my backpack and walked up to the whiteboard to take a better look. "Legionnaires' Disease." I said with a shrug not really sure what to suggest.
The five of them stayed quiet for a moment. "Look I'm in High School I don't really know what I'm talking about." I said softly.
"Kutner and Foreman check the workplace. Thirteen and Taub start him on antibiotics." House said.
The four of them started to get up to leave. "Oh wait! Before you leave. I have Christmas presents for you guys." I said awkwardly.
"You didn't come to show us up?" Taub said.
"N-no?" I said while scrambling to my backpack to get the presents. "Right uh here's Taub's." I said and handed it to him.
He nodded and took it.
"Foreman." I said.
"We've barely talked." He said while taking the present.
"I mean it would be rude to show up here with gifts for everyone but you." I said.
"Thirteen. Thanks for the physical." I said whispering the last part.
"No problem Jay." She said.
Taub and Thirteen left to tend to the patient and Foreman went to wait for Kutner outside. "Last but not least." I said handing Kutner his present.
"You're still on for Star Trek the day after Christmas right?" He asked and walked over to another part of the room.
"I mean yeah." I said.
"Great! Here." He said and handed me a gift back.
"Oh!" I said.
"What not expecting one?" He said.
"I mean you're the first person to give me one in return so yes?" I said.
"Oh… Well, you're a pretty cool kid. Besides you need that." He said while tapping the present he got me.
"Well you don't need what I got you but I hope you like it." I said with a smile.
"I sure I will. I better get going before House notices I'm still here." Kutner said and left.
I tucked Kutner's present in my backpack and glanced at House's office. I can only hope that he'll like what I got him.
~~~
"You know I swear we had more eggnog." Wilson said.
"Yeah weird." I said like I totally didn't drink quite a bit. House found out but he didn't care. Only Wilson is in the dark.
"Maybe you drank more than you thought." House said.
Nice cover House…
Wilson glared at him.
I bounced up to a standing position on the couch. "Right we're doing presents now. I've been waiting far too long with you two being at work all day." I said pointing at House and Wilson.
"You could've just opened them." House said making his way to the couch.
"Actually no. It's my first Christmas with you two so we're doing this at least once." I said.
And the first Christmas without Mom.
Wilson chuckled and grabbed his gift for me and threw it in my lap. "Go wild."
"For Blue Jay, you've been needing a new one of these. Love Wilson." I read the tag before opening.
My eyes lit up at the new binder. "How do you know my size?" I asked.
"He checked your laundry." House said.
"Oh. That's pretty obvious I guess." I said. "Thank you so much Wilson." I said and hugged him.
Wilson was a little surprised by the hug. Then again he doesn't know I'm buzzed so you know. "Okay, so you have to open mine for you now." I said and handed him the present.
Wilson read the tag with a small smile. "Is this?" He asked after opening the present.
"Yes! Uncle Connor gave me a lot of props from the musicals he was in. You're more into that stuff so." I said.
"That's probably worth some money." House said.
"Yeah." Wilson said wide-eyed.
I laughed. "I'm glad you like it. Here House." I said and threw him his gift.
He caught it. "Very light."
I shrugged.
House opened the present. It's a flaming guitar strap. "To match your cane." I said with a smirk.
Wilson chuckled which made me lose my composure and start laughing too.
He got up and put the strap on one of his guitars. "Bitchin." He said.
Wilson and I laughed harder.
House sat back down on the couch this time strumming some Christmas songs. He slid me a large envelope. "Here Kid."
"You got me a massive card?" I joked.
House kept playing the guitar.
I opened it. Looks like some sort of legal documents. "Is this?" I asked.
House stopped playing. "Wilson asked your friends what you wanted. Told them you said you hated how you were constantly getting outed by your last name. Even joked that you'd like a name change for Christmas." He said.
"And you're fine with it?" I asked.
He shrugged. "You're my son. Jay House makes sense."
I bit my lip. Wow okay, Jay don't cry. That eggnog definitely didn't seem like a great idea now.
House got up and put the guitar back. Once it was back I ran up and hugged him."Thanks… Dad." I said."
"Oh okay. You're definitely not getting eggnog next year." House said.
"You gave him WHAT!" Wilson exclaimed.
"Wilson we're having a moment." I whined.
"I didn't give it to him. I walked in on Jay drinking the rest of the Eggnog." House said and pulled me off of him.
Wilson pinched the bridge of his nose. "So you just covered for him?"
"He's 16." House said with a shrug.
"House not only is the drinking age 21 but he's a minor." Wilson said.
I listened to the two of them argue while I opened Kutner's present. "Oh, dope." I said.
They turned to me. "Who's that from?" Wilson asked.
"Kutner." I said and balanced the Star Trek The Next Generation DVD Box Set on my head.
Wilson just sighed.
"Oh! I should text him thanks!" I said and ran off to grab my phone in my room.
Thank 4 Sar Trek I"v ben wantin it

What are the worst games you played? Mine was a Lilo and Stich game that had nothing to do with the story and a Harry Potter one with sucky combat and a Pirates of the Caribbean game. COD after MW series and BO1 became too bland to mention and then theres Bethesda games. The only good things about Bethesda games is the lore, the immersion and the atmosphere, everything else is either a buggy mess or an unfinished, half-assed feature especially the combat.
I think I know the very game you mean, it was that old as Pirates of the Caribbean game back when xbox 360 was just released for maybe a year or so right? Oblivion glory days when there was barely anything out and you were desperate enough to play anything basically XD
I played that shit, and this shitty shitty ass german roleplay game saying it was better than Oblivion XD I was 12 and was stupid enough to take that as a guarantee it was a good game lol. I learned the hard way...
What was that shit called... fuck man all I remember is they said “Nay” a lot and that it was about saving your sister from some Orc god or something? And the funny thing is by the time I got to the end of the game and actually started to enjoy it a little, it ended abruptly with no playing after you finished, which I didn’t expect from the Oblivion comparison on the game case lol. That game was such ass, in every aspect. Mechanics, story, voice acting, graphics, everything.
If anyone can recall what that game was called I’d appreciate it.
Besides that, I definitely agree with Call of Duty after Modern Warfare 3, but besides Fallout 76, which I havent actually played, I can’t put any Bethesda games on this list, not even Fallout 4. They were varying degrees of good yet disappointing (excluding the mess that is 76) but that’s just because I know those fuckers can do better.
Other worst games I’ve played:
I really did not like Battlefield at all, not even Bad Company so those go on the list for me.
Fantasy Star Universe lol which is funny since my friends and I played it a lot on 360 despite how bad it was. Why? Fuck if I know.
That’s really pretty much it, I usually research games before I play them so I rarely actually get burned by a game...
Oh shit wait, Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition XD Don’t get me wrong, I’ve played them both quite a bit but Inquisition I almost got my money back after buying because of the long boring slog the first 6 hours were. The game has its gems for sure but them shits is waaaaay too stretched out. I can’t go back and play that anymore, just can’t, not even for Cassandra. Same with Dragon Age 2, not even for Merrill. DA2... Hawke is just so fucking lame. They tried to make a medieval commander Shepard and the attempt fell flat on its ass. Hawke just barely better than Kaiden Alenko and that’s only because Hawke’s jester dialogue was funny. Kaiden is rarely funny, on purpose.

My Top 20 Favorite Video Games
(Listed in the order in which I played them)
Pokémon Red Version - Along with my matching red Game Boy Pocket, this was the first video game I owned that was purely mine and not handed down from an older kid. I still go back and replay this every couple of years on that very same Game Boy Pocket or on the 3DS Virtual Console. I know there’s FireRed and a whole series of more modern Pokémon games at my disposal but the original Red Version easily gets the most nostalgia points. Sometimes that’s what it’s all about, no? Banjo-Kazooie - Similarly, the N64 became my first home console that wasn’t a hand-me-down and it came equipped with both bear and bird (complete with “screaming about it on Christmas morning”). After going back and replaying this almost twenty years later I gained new appreciation for how goofy and colorful it is. Treasure Trove Cove is so fucking catchy. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle - From its kickin’ soundtrack to its satisfying controls to its random-ass virtual pet simulator this game has it all. Multiplayer was always pretty exciting too, I remember many an afternoon trying to one-up a friend during a grind race. No 3D Sonic game compares to this if you ask me, although Sonic Heroes and Sonic Unleashed come sort of close in their own ways. What I wouldn’t give for a proper Sonic Adventure 3... Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes - I remember playing this at my local arcade in my youth before eventually getting a port of it for the Xbox 360. The look of its 2D sprites are phenomenal and - if it will help you understand why I love this game - I’m singing “I Wanna Take You For a Ride” to myself as I type this. Metroid: Zero Mission - This was the first Metroid game I ever actually beat, and it was the game that made me fall in love with the series. I love Metroid Fusion and Metroid: Samus Returns as well but I like Zero Mission’s visual style the most. I was so thrown for a loop when Samus lost her Power Suit towards the end of the game but it only made getting it back that much sweeter.  Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - I started playing this one in 2004 but didn’t officially beat it until way later in 2017. For a while I had a pattern I’d go through every few years of “start playing, enjoy it for a while, get lost, and start over for some reason.” Took me thirteen years to get serious about it but it earned its place as my favorite of the 3D Metroid games. I felt so fulfilled once it was complete, like I was achieving a childhood dream. Kingdom Hearts II - I don’t think I would’ve gotten into this game if not for my friend’s suggestion but I couldn’t thank him enough for it. This is another one of those games you only vaguely understand when you’re a kid only to realize how complex and intuitively designed it is in your adulthood. After the long wait, Kingdom Hearts III proved to be pretty satisfying but I just have too much history with its predecessor for it not to win a spot on this list. Jak 3 - Though my interest in this series burned fast and bright, this game still sticks out to me as one of the best I’ve ever experienced. I played the third installment before Jak and Daxter or Jak 2 but that’s fine because it’s the best goddamn one. Driving around in the desert, swapping out gun modules, and taking flight on some janky wings made of light were definitely the highlights for me. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm - I got into this game during the latter period of Wrath of the Lich King but I didn’t feel like an official WoW player until this fiery, grim expansion. It was the first real online game I’d ever played (if you don’t count Neopets and Adventure Quest) that I started as a Night Elf Warrior in a PVP server and ended as a Worgen Hunter in a non-PVP server. Because fuck the Horde, that’s why. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - I got Skyrim on a whim because I literally couldn’t think of anything else I wanted for Christmas in 2011. There was no hype for me, I knew nothing ‘bout no Dragonborns, but I thought “heck it” and dove in anyway. After originally playing it on Xbox 360 and replaying it more recently on PS4 (with a slew of mods) I can say with confidence this game continues to blow me away. I always seem to find something new even though I feel like I know it like the back of my hand. I did get involved in The Elder Scrolls Online later on but Skyrim is still where it’s at. Soul Calibur V - I was first introduced to the tale of souls and swords (eternally retold, of course) through Soul Calibur II and only because you could play as Link on the Gamecube version. Fast-forward to 2012 and I was still on board with its story and cast of characters but its character creation was really what kept me hooked. Soul Calibur VI turned out to be a little disappointing but I definitely got the most out of its fifth installment and I’m guilty of having played for hours and hours on end. Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward - What began as a free trial because I was bored turned into a years-long interest in yet another MMO. While the base game was okay it really picked up speed with Heavensward and I was hooked from that point onwards. After a certain point I caught myself not skipping cutscenes and discovered - oh hey - the story’s actually really good. Star Wars Battlefront - I loved this game when it came out on PS4 and used it often to get my insatiable Star Wars fix. Aerial combat was my downright favorite part of the game and I loved smoking some TIE Fighters in an X-Wing or in the Millennium Falcon. Its sequel Star Wars Battlefront II could’ve made this list but EA was being a real dirtbag about it and now I find it hard to look back on happy memories of it the same way. The 2015 game is thankfully unsullied by those sour elements, however, so I’d say its gotta be my favorite Star Wars game ever. Overwatch - This game came to me at a time when I only wanted to play games that had character creation. I was hesitant to get to know all the characters and lore but I’m overjoyed I did since they’re so rich in personality and fun details. Once I got the hang of characters like McCree, Soldier, Reinhardt, and Widowmaker I was absolutely sold and I still play it two years later. Sonic Mania - The delightful trailer for this game got me all riled up but I wouldn’t know just how great it was until I was playing it myself. I don’t think I could ever truly enjoy my previous favorite 2D Sonic games (Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD) ever again because this game just feels better than all of them combined.  The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - I didn’t really grow up with the Legend of Zelda, only ever playing A Link to the Past and Twilight Princess, but I immediately knew I was going to enjoy this open world take on the series. Just the sheer freedom of what you could do and where you could go was enough to reel me in and its aesthetic still amazes me with how great of a mood it generates. Final Fantasy VII - I still remember going into a GameStop when I was in high school and naively attempting to buy a used copy of this game for the PS1. It was an “epic fail,” as I would’ve said at the time. But over a decade later I downloaded it on the PS4 and went to town, getting my full FF7 experience at long last and loving every minute of it. Very stoked for the remake; it’s probably my most anticipated game right now. Marvel’s Spider-Man - What a surefire hit this was. From the moment the first gameplay footage was out I knew this was going to be the must-have web-swinging, wall-crawling good time. I love that there are so many ways to play the same character and everyone can really embody their own version of Peter Parker. I’m also from New York City so seeing a digital rendition of Manhattan was a real treat (even though they changed uptown a lot and my old apartment doesn’t exist in the game). Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Nine of the other nineteen entries in this list feature a character who’s playable in this latest Smash game. I get that people like Melee for reasons and whatever but how can you not like SSBU, the game that has it all? I’m still riding the high of Banjo and Kazooie entering the fray and I absolutely cannot wait to see where things go from here. Never had more fun playing local multiplayer in my life. Red Dead Redemption II - Never cared for Grand Theft Auto and the first Red Dead Redemption was fun but damn, there’s nothing quite like its sequel. I’m still working my way through the story just because I’ve spent so much time out in the wide open world, taking my time and seeing the sights. I might be a city boy but I have a deep appreciation for the American West and if this game ain’t just the prettiest damn thing I ever did see... hoo-WEE! Top shelf.

Star Wars Knights of The Old Repbulic II Review
Release Date: NA; 6th December 2004 (Xbox) 8th February  2005 (PC) EU; 11th February 2005 (Xbox & PC)
Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
Publisher: LucasArts
Tumblr media
I had gotten my Xbox Christmas of 2004. It was the crystal one too and I had been wanting one all year. I kinda spoilt the surprise for myself though because in a poorly chosen hiding spot by my parents I found the crystal box poking out of a bag. It was torture to occasionally look at it and do nothing with it but gawk and wait until Christmas and almost feign a reaction to it. Sorry mum and dad…
But Knights of the Old Republic II was the third game I got myself? I think? First two I can remember were Ninja Gaiden and Soul Calibur 2… let’s just say Kotor 2 was the third game I got for myself.
So I went down to Game, saw the cover with that haunting image of Darth Nihilus on the front, nabbed it, got home, played it for the weekend and got bored of it… Shamefully. There were parts that I liked but it played so differently to other action games I was already accustomed to at the time it threw me off. Little did I know how much of an RPG it was and the action was so different to what I was used to.
The initial problem I had with this game was it didn’t meet my expectations of what I wanted out of a Star Wars game, especially one where I knew you could create your own character and make them Sith or Jedi. Perfectly what I wanted. But after playing it for 12 hours and still on Telos and still without a lightsaber, I lost patience with it and gave up. How foolish my 13 year old self was. I then traded it in and got something else instead. If I remember right they even had Kotor there as well…
But so ignorantly did I miss out on one of the greatest games and greatest Star Wars games of my budding teenage years that it wasn’t until 5 years later I gave it another try and since then it might be one of my most played games without even realising it.
I got it again on the Xbox, played through it with a video walkthrough and I completed it. Although this first run through felt a little disconnected because I was almost playing it alongside the video and didn’t fully experience it all myself with my own choices and completely understanding what choices I was making. But the fact was I completed it regardless, I got my damn lightsaber—lightsabers even! Goddamn plural!—and loved the characters and every moment of it. The story was completely different to any other Star Wars story I was accustomed to which delved into themes I didn’t fully understand yet, but I loved it all the same.
I loved the planets, the characters, the combat I grew to love, the music, the voice acting, the twists, the scope it all conveyed and perspective it gave on the force and the Sith and what it is to be Jedi. All of it influenced me even and inspired my own Star Wars stories I want to write.
Since then I have played and completed it 3 more times. Once more on the Xbox, a save on the 360 I completed and a Sith run I started, and recently on PC. I’ve only ever completed it as a Jedi and the Sith run I still haven’t completed after… 6 years now I think? Maybe? Probably longer than that. But the best thing about all the times I’ve completed it is that as much as I have tried to stay close to what I will always do in the games I have always gotten a different outcome in the end. I’ve had an ending where no one survived, where some survived, and where everyone survived, and another where all survived but Atton died. And I know next time I play through it again I’m going to get another ending completely different. That’s the best thing about this I think, that each ending isn’t guaranteed to be the same even if you play close to the same as before.
So, how this game plays. It’s space D&D. The game uses a d20 system so it was akin to playing Star Wars D&D.  You can even see these roll stats in the game in the journal, message log and combat filter. Kotor also used this system. And you know what? The system works. Not only for its combat mechanics but for its character creation. You can have more freedom to play about how you want to build your character and class as you level up.
Want to be a Jedi Knight? Consular? Sentinel? Just be a Scoundrel or Scout and be allergic to lightsabers? (Weirdo, how would you not want a lightsaber?) A Techie? Sith Lord? Jedi Master? Sith Assassin? All these classes and builds gives such freedom and variety it begs for multiple playthroughs with its open ended opportunities for how you want to make this story go and develop your character. You can go on with a single lightsaber or sling dual lightsabers, optionally with a short lightsaber in your off hand (it works better that way), or go all Maul and swing about a double edged lightsaber, mow down rebel and Mandalorian scum with a mini minigun. You can rely solely on force powers and go all Palpy or completely ignore using the force and stick to your guns. (Seriously, why not use the force or lightsabers? Goddamn weirdo you are.)
You get a multitude of gear to equip that can help out your stats further, naturally. And you can modify your own lightsaber! When you’re on Dantooine, the home of the Jedi Academy that has long since been abandoned, you can delve into the Jedi caves that house the crystals that all blossoming Jedi in training go to when it comes time to build your own lightsaber. And in this crystal cavern you can find your own special character specific crystal. Of course you can find other crystals in this cave to help power up your lightsaber and other colours (I’ve always gone dual orange and yellow), but this crystal holds a special connection for your character both narratively and gameplay wise. As a gameplay mechanic; when you level up or change alignment from light to dark, or just get lighter and become Keanu Reeves or more darker and go goth, you can take the crystal out of your lightsaber, take it to Kreia and she will enhance it to better reflect your character’s growth. So if you’re majoratively light you can gain more damage to dark side, or if you’re dark you gain more damage to light, more attack power, more damage etc.
As a narrative device, it works for the Exile’s lost connection from the force.
Which, now I think it’s time to get to the main appeal of this game.
Tumblr media
Knights of the Old Republic II is possibly the best Star Wars story ever told next to Knights of the Old Republic and the films themselves.
You play as The Exile, a Jedi exiled by the Jedi council because you chose to defy them and go to war with Revan and Malak against the Mandalorians before they slaughtered everyone. The bastards. Who’s the bastards? The Jedi council or the Mandalorians? Maybe both? You be the judge.
Seriously, you get to decide who the bastards are. Disagree with the council? Agree with them? Resentfully chose to fight the Mandalorians? Or gleefully sided with them and fell to the dark side because everyone are bastards and you wanna watch the galaxy burn?
Hell, maybe you’re the bastard…
Anyway!
That’s all you’re given. You get to weave your own story throughout this. If you’ve played the first Kotor then you know the deal with Revan and Malak. If you’ve read the Revan book as well then you will know too that this Exile is canonically Meetra Surik. You can make and choose whoever you want easily. Want to be Revan again even? Go for it. But she’s the main character of this story and it finishes on the light side.
As Meetra, you wake up on a Peragus mining facility in your undies with amnesia. You run into a cranky old woman called Kreia and an imprisoned dodgy scoundrel named Atton. You eventually come across this game’s resident R2, T3-M4, returning from Kotor. You escape the doomed planet with the repaired Ebon Hawk-- also back from Kotor-- as the Sith arrive, who is led by the walking zombie Darth Sion. You arrive on Telos, get your barings, either help some environmental Ithorians or corporate Czerka, solve a few security cases before you’re off and on your way to the big wide galaxy ahead and the story opens up.
Tumblr media
Now, you’re being chased by Darth Sion because he and Darth Nihilus believe you to be the last of the Jedi (ha.) But you are not! Your task is to find the remaining hidden Jedi masters and, depending on your alignment, gather them together at the ruins of the Jedi Academy on Dantooine or kill them.
Along the way you’re going to meet new party members and Kreia will train you in the ways of the force.
Then, you get four planets to choose from to find these masters; Dantooine, Onderon, Korriban, and Nar Shadaa. And you can go to any of these planets in any order you like. Though, my order has always been Dantooine, Nar Shadaa, Onderon, Korriban.
Tumblr media
I’m not going to go through each planet and explain what happens and spell it all out, but you find more party members to help you along the way, find the masters and then shit unfolds in a greatly unexpected way…
Mandalore, another returning character from Kotor, at one point on the Onderon moon of Dxun has a confrontation with Kreia and tells a fellow Mandalorian “Forget the Jedi. Keep an eye on her…” Which, seriously. Keep a very close eye on Kreia, pay attention to what she says, what she does and how she can influence others. She’s the most curious of all your party members…
Tumblr media
Which, speaking of, as Kreia teaches your character and you grow and you attract more followers, you eventually get the chance to train your party members into becoming Sith or Jedi. Those who are force sensitive are the Handmaiden, Mira, Bao-Dur, Atton and the Disciple. Although, the Handmaiden is a character who you can only recruit when you play as the male. Taking Handmaiden’s place when you play female is the Disciple, someone you meet in the Jedi ruins on Dantooine.
And then comes the romance options! Because what RPG game wouldn’t have one. As the male character you get Mira, Visas and Handmaiden, and as the female you get Atton and the Disciple.
I’ve always gone the way of the male and choosing the Handmaiden. Helps she’s voice by Grey Delisle…
Anyway.
Time to get into the story more.
So, you’re trying to find these Jedi masters while running halfway across the galaxy from a zombie Sith and a gluttonous Sith.
Sion is a man who should long ago have since died, but is using the force to keep himself held together. His body is decayed and falling apart, he’s got one working eye, his voice is dried and husky. That is a man whose sheer force of rage and anger and willpower to control the force as such to keep himself together and alive is incredible. I’ve never seen something like that nor someone use the force so creatively.
And then there’s Nihilus. A man no longer who feeds on the force. A wound in the force who feeds on all life throughout the galaxy. He sees not the form of flesh and sinew in front of him, but the living force around him and all is his for the taking, to consume and draw on until there is nothing left. He is a vampiric, poisonous leech the likes of which no Sith has ever matched before. Again, something I have never seen before in how a character, or even how the game’s developers, has ever used the force, to bend it to his will and develop the force more into something greater and more mysterious and powerful than the films have ever elaborated on.
And that leads me into my next point; the force and Kreia. Which, spoilers for the twist and ending. (I know I said earlier I won’t spoil but this needs talking about! At least I’m leaving some mystery.)
Kreia is a Sith… Or is she?
Well, she is truly Darth Treya. If Sion is the Sith of pain, and Nihilus is the Sith of hunger and annihilation, then Treya is the Sith of betrayal. And therein lies the twist.
Kreia is seemingly a Jedi at first, perhaps even a grey Jedi the more you talk to her. I mean, her alignment on the character screen is permanently neutral, no matter which side you sway to the heaviest or how much you influence her. Until eventually you come to learn she was once Darth Treya, a powerful Sith Lord who once had the galaxy firmly in her grasp accompanied by her pupils Sion and Nihilus. Until those two overthrew her and imposed her into her own exile. Now, where else have we heard of that…?
So naturally, with Kreia wise to the force and of the Exile’s being, she works to control Surik and do her bidding no matter which side she may fall on. She manipulates all that occurs right up until the game’s final stage; Malachor V, the final battleground and graveyard of the Mandalorian wars, where so many Jedi died and where Meetra Surik became a wound in the force herself.
Once you have defeated Nihilus and convinced Sion to finally die and let go of the force, you face Kreia. Or, Treya, rather. And it is here you learn more about the force, its sides, its control, Treya’s motivations and the why of everything.
Tumblr media
Treya, hates the force. The reason why she does what she does is because she hates it. She wishes to see it dead and destroyed because of the hold it has on all those in life. And, as much as she betrayed Meetra Surik, she holds a special kind of love for her. She doesn’t wish her dead or any kind of harm or anything like that to have happen to her. But for her to understand more on the force.
This is where the best part of this whole game and story culminates, the reflection on the force and what the force is.
The force is a powerhouse. The force is a living beast. A galactic behemoth that is almost a deity or living entity that is all that lives. It is not these midichlorians, this kind of blood bacteria. It is not this mysterious magic. The force is an all-consuming, all controlling, all illuminating and suffocating creature that presides in everyone and everything. It controls the motion and flow of everything. It is reactive to emotion and try as they all might, the Sith and the Jedi may never really fully understand what the force is other than be a slave to it or try to control it to their will.
There was once this one interesting theory I read about what the force is and related it to a swimming pool. The Jedi only swim in the shallow to middle part of the pool. They can see how far the pool stretches and understand its breadth but dare not delve deeper into it else they get lost or drown within it, and so stay safe and respect the shallow part of the pool. While the Sith dive deep into the pool and swim far and wide into the deepest parts and soon find that it is really an ocean and discover all these other monstrous beings deep below. And that makes total sense honestly.
I love more the concept of the force being this uncontrollable being, this literal special force that is everything and there are a special number who are sensitive to it and can control and use it. And not just for magic tricks like lifting things and confusing chumps, but to use the force to manipulate, influence and shape things as sizeable as an entire galaxy. To control something on that scope with that kind of a power is intangible yet fascinating.
And so, regarding that, Treya hates that people in the galaxy might not have full control over themselves and she wishes to see the force die. And that is an immense ambition. How could you kill the force? Could you? Darth Nihilus fed on it and wiped out star systems, Meetra Surik was a wound and brought death and suffering to those around her and amassed a loyal following that fought when she fought (a very, very clever piece of writing to implement a simple game mechanic such as levelling up into the story as for each enemy you defeat or kill the stronger you become), and Sion relied on the force to live until he gave it up. There are those who rely on it who perhaps shouldn’t be around and those who are a poison with the force.
And, perhaps, even all of Treya’s ambitions aren’t really her conscious choices either? Maybe in that, the force controlled her choices because that is what the force wills and dictates…
Maybe the force wills to die too but learned it cannot…
Who knows!
It’s this writing and Sara Kestelman’s acting as the conflicted Sith Kreia which helped this game win awards and cement Kreia as one of the most recognisable and compelling video game characters ever.
And that’s another one of this game’s strengths; the voice acting. Everyone does stupendously and there’s not a wrong word put out or spoken.
Either way, Knights of the Old Republic 2 is an incredible Star Wars game and an incredible Star Wars story that is critical and self-reflective on itself, superbly creative, immersive, poignant, and did more to develop the Star Wars lore than it is recognised for.
Do yourself a favour and play it and play it again.
If you’re playing it on PC, get the Restored Content mod that fixed everything Obsidian didn’t have time to fix and which includes all cut content. Go fulfil your Sith or Jedi dreams and get lost.
I have spoken.

trying to get a cheap Xbox 360: a saga
background: several years ago I found a bunch of stuff in a dumpster, like a couple backpacks, some dried crickets (reptile food I guess), a bunch of birthday cards, and also a functional PSP with two games, an original Xbox, and a probably busted Gamecube with a controller. the whole thing was a mystery; I did eventually find the owner on Facebook because his name was on the cards and I tried to contact him to see if he wanted any of it back, especially the cards since it seemed like those might have sentimental value, and it went in his spam folder and he found my message like...three years later to say no thanks. so: free stuff for me! figured I might have a use for the Xbox eventually.
I didn’t, actually, because what are you even going to do with an original Xbox, but then once I finally got through Silent Hill 2 and 3 I started hunting around to see how hard it would be to play any of the other games. and I discovered, first of all, that Silent Hill: Homecoming has no trophies or achievements on Playstation or Steam, which is where I had it on my wish list, but it does have Xbox 360 achievements; that Silent Hill 4 is also supposed to be good but it hasn’t been re-released on anything newer than PS2/Xbox, because Konami hates putting in any effort to make money; that it’s possible to get Silent Hill 4 for like ten bucks if you go with the Xbox version; and also that an Xbox 360, in what appears to be its only major advantage over the PS3, can natively play any original Xbox game. so then obviously I fixated on getting a cheap Xbox 360, because that doubles my field of games I can play cheap by getting them used (and I’d already picked up a couple downloadable Xbox 360 games for free that were just sitting in my Microsoft account).
and after that it just got dumb.
do some hunting. actual refurbished Xbox 360 consoles are like $70; Goodwill often has some for $50, which seems like way too much considering a) I’m not sure those come with power supplies and they definitely don’t come with controllers, and b) if they don’t come with power supplies, there’s no way to know if they work. start stalking Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace.
eventually find somebody on Craigslist selling original Xbox 360, power supply, two controllers, and two games (Madden 09 and some arcade compilation) for $35, which sounds like a very very good deal; don’t want to pull the HDMI cable off my PS3, though, so I order one cheap and wait
bring Madden 09, original Xbox, and probably-busted Gamecube to local game store, where I’m pleasantly surprised to be offered $40 trade-in credit for everything; immediately buy Silent Hill: Homecoming for Xbox 360
HDMI cable arrives. I hook everything up...........and get a Red Ring of Death
hunt around on the internet to see if there’s anything I can try
open Xbox 360, slicing open finger in the process, in hopes that dust inside is the cause of RROD; it’s not
controllers also don’t seem to work. no, wait, one of them does, the one that looks like it might actually be a little corroded? new batteries don’t work but the old ones do even though I’m pretty sure they didn’t the first time I tried?
call around to see what repair prices are like. it’s not great! the whole point was to get this for extremely cheap!
find somebody else on Facebook Marketplace selling another original Xbox 360 and an Xbox 360 E (but no power supply for either) for $40, because apparently her nephew just left them behind when he left the state. I figure okay, I can use the power supply and maybe controllers from Craigslist, and whichever consoles I decide not to keep can at least get me something in trade-in value. plan to meet. get cash and drive all the way over. stop hearing from her. eventually learn her daughter got a bloody nose at the playground and they went home. ask if we can meet again. hear nothing.
she’s available the next day. I say a different day would be better. she’s like okay I’ll just go to the next person then (you know, even though I’d been talking to her and she knew I drove all the way across town once already). I’m like ugh fine if today’s the only day then yeah I’ll drive over again, knowing I might be getting suckered but it does seem like a good price. this time I actually get them.
this Xbox 360 is like...surprisingly beat up, but I hook it up with the power supply from the RROD Xbox 360 and it WORKS. also has Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 inside. bonus.
Xbox 360 E requires a different power cord, and local store has power supplies for $30 or more. I decide I can be patient and go online, where I discover that instead I can order a three-dollar adapter that will let me use the original power supply with it. also order a rechargeable battery pack for the controller, which...works on both controllers, including the one that refused to work with batteries. sure why not.
find wired controller at Goodwill for $8 and buy it, figuring it’s a good deal and it’ll be especially useful if I want to use a controller with my PC. has an old plug that the Xbox won’t take (which is weird, because...I have the oldest version of Xbox 360, and this is an Xbox 360 controller, so what console was this controller designed for?) so I order a USB adapter for a couple bucks. it arrives. wired controller doesn’t turn on. is it the adapter or the controller itself? no idea but my money’s on “I spent eight bucks on a busted controller because I shouldn’t buy shit like that at Goodwill maybe”.
decide I want to try MW3 just to see if I want to play it before trading it in. open optical drive, and it closes itself faster than I expected, so I grab at the tray. it doesn’t like that. will now only make sad noises when I try to open it. I do some reading on how to open stuck Xbox 360 optical drives, watch some videos, spend a considerable amount of time messing with it. nope, it Will Not Open.
occurs to me that the Xbox 360 E might have something in it as well, since I don’t have a power supply and haven’t been able to turn it on. turns out the Xbox 360 E is actually designed in a reasonable way that lets you easily pop open the tray if it’s stuck. it does have something inside but it’s just a DVD of The Equalizer, boo.
so now I have an original Xbox 360 in great shape except for the RROD, and a beat-up one that is somehow perfectly functional except for the optical drive, and a much less beat-up Xbox 360 E that I’m feeling much friendlier toward but that I can’t use until I get the adapter, so I figure I’ll use that one. it’s newer, it’s obviously better designed, it probably doesn’t have the same problems that gave so many original Xbox 360 consoles the RROD.
the adapter finally arrives. I hook everything up. the Xbox 360 E does not turn on.
no RROD, no nothing, it just sits there. I ask the universe if it’s fucking kidding me but the universe does not reply.
is it the adapter or the console? I HAVE NO WAY TO KNOW BECAUSE I HAVE NO WAY TO POWER THE CONSOLE. grumpily order an actual Xbox 360 E power supply, finding a third-party one on eBay for $15.
now: waiting for the new power supply but also still stalking Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist, wondering if I should jump on it if I find yet another cheap console that might be better than what I’ve gotten so far or if that’s, you know, the whole “throwing good money after bad” thing.
prediction: once I get the Xbox 360 E power supply, the console still will not turn on, which will leave me with a power supply I will probably want to resell and two original Xbox 360 consoles busted in different ways. I will try to swap the optical drives which, if successful, will leave me with one beat-up but functioning Xbox 360, and two busted consoles that should at least get me some trade-in value. however, given my luck so far, I will be utterly unsurprised if the beat-up but functioning Xbox 360 just fucking dies on me in fairly short order as well.
this also does not include my attempts to get Minecraft for cheap, because one dude on Facebook was going to sell it to me but then he stopped replying, and somebody else wanted me to drive out even further but then she had some kind of emergency so that didn’t work either.
I just. I just wanted to get a cheap Xbox 360 so I could play more games, why did that have to be so complicated

Note
Sorry if this has been done before but, how was everyone when they first joined the family? Like first few weeks and such. (:
Arthur:
Stayed in his room
Always grumpy about something??
A lot of reading/being read to
Constant nightmares
Crawled into Dutch and Hosea’s bed a lot
Writing/doodling in his new journal constantly
He always asked before getting food
Hosea and Dutch took him fishing for his first time
He enjoyed it and wanted to go out to do it again
Didn’t want to start school
Bill:
Sneaked out a lot
Dutch and Hosea get mad at him and demand to know where he is going
Psh, “nowhere”
Would take and store food in random locations to “save for later”
He and Arthur argued a lot at first before getting along
Took Arthur’s journal one time and started reading it while holding Arthur back as Arthur was trying to get it back/fight him
They didn’t talk for a long time after that and Bill actually felt bad about it
Eventually Bill started to skip school when Dutch and Hosea made him go back
Within his first week at school the school calls Hosea, saying that Bill never showed up once
The first month of living with his new family Bill was already grounded
Karen:
Still tried pulling scams with unsuspecting people
Hosea caught her, still giving her tips on how to improve on scamming people (since he did the same thing when he was younger)
Dutch took her clothes shopping and they were gone for hours
When they got home she made everyone sit in the living room as she displayed what new outfits they bought-Arthur: “Can we go now?”-Karen: “No. Now, which outfit should I wear for my first day of school?”-Arthur and Bill: Groans
She’s insistent that she goes to school sooner than Dutch and Hosea would like
Once she finishes her first week at school her phone is already filled up with phone numbers and texting constantly
Dutch says that if any boy hurts his little girl or breaks her heart that he would break his legs and his skull
Hosea tries to help her with her math homework but he gets frustrated because he doesn’t remember having to do this when he was in school
She tries to get to know Arthur, but he shuts himself out to almost everybody, so it was useless to try
She keeps everyone up at night with her phone constantly going off from phone calls/text messages
Tilly:
She cried. A lot.
Also prayed to God and her mother every morning and every night
Took her awhile to handle a room with Karen since she would talk on the phone for hours and snore at night
Always asked Dutch if there was anything she could do
Dutch told her to just relax and to enjoy herself
She tried desperately to find a hobby to enjoy
Then she saw a sewing machine ad on the TV
Hosea brought up her interest to Dutch, who bought it for her
She instantly made everyone little gifts with it
Karen took her shopping at the mall for hours while Dutch sat outside the shop waiting for them and was falling asleep waiting
Javier:
Had trouble communicating
He and Bill could never get along
Hosea always had to pull them apart when they got into fist fights
Hosea also helped him to improve reading
Scar across his neck that he was self conscious that everyone was looking or talking about it
Hated sharing a room with Bill, but liked sharing a room with Arthur
Arthur, Hosea, and Javier would all go out fishing together and it was Javier’s new favorite hobby
Of course, he’s also hooked on video games, but Arthur couldn’t understand how he could play it for hours and hours on end
School? Lame. He didn’t take school seriously for awhile until Hosea scared him into caring about it
Stayed up until 3am since he didn’t like to sleep because all he sees his good memories with him and his uncle
Lenny:
Heavily mourning over his father (who was killed in a drunk driving accident)
Didn’t want to talk to anyone but Hosea (since he was a family friend)
Eventually he opens up to Arthur
After that he never stops talking
Dutch is convinced that he’s not the same kid
It’s obvious that Hosea is his favorite dad
He’s excited to go back to school
Eventually he starts warming up to Dutch
They’re both bookworms and start discussing what books they were reading together
Not use to sharing a room since he was an only child- but now he knows he couldn’t ever sleep alone in a room again
Mary-Beth:
Was very quiet and didn’t want to draw attention to herself
Since food was something she never really had, she had a habit of checking the kitchen to make sure that there was enough food for everyone
Dutch always assured her that there would always be enough food, there would always be clothes, and there would always be a roof over their heads
She found that the internet was her getaway, making a whole life online that her new family wouldn’t understand
When she discovered cosplay she instantly went to Tilly, knowing that she made clothing
Once she got comfortable she was a chatterbox, especially with Arthur- asking about his day, telling him about her day, etc. and Arthur wasn’t used to the constant socialization
She writes in a diary every night before she goes to bed
The girls stuck closely together
Anime was quickly her new addiction
Dutch got her hooked on reading
John:
Literally was was always ready to fight/argue with any of his siblings/Dutch and Hosea
Once punched Bill in the gut for calling him “street rat”
Was always paranoid whenever Dutch and/or Hosea drove him anywhere
Pretty anxious and angry at everything
Dutch found that if they ‘took a walk’ he’d calm down
Javier was the one who introduced him to video games by allowing him to play Call of Duty on his Xbox 360
Call of Duty was his favorite game and that made Hosea worried that he was channeling his anger in the wrong place
He tried mimicking Arthur a lot
Bill would practice his WWE moves on him- slamming him down on the couch
Hosea spent weeks helping him learn to read and it frustrated John greatly since he wasn’t good at it
Sean:
Tried to keep his ADHD to himself as best as he could so he didn’t seem like a freak
Then Dutch took him aside, asking what was wrong- since he was acting differently than when he did when they first met
Sean confessed that he didn’t want to annoy his new siblings
He thought that for awhile until he saw how literally everyone was dedicated to pissing each other off
He and John shared a room and it consisted of:-Sean: “John? Do pigeons have feelings?”-John, after a pause: “Shut up, Sean.” but do they?
John showed him video games (by sneaking in to Javier’s room to play on his Xbox 360)
Minecraft was his new favorite thing
Hosea sat him down and talked to him about medicine for ADHD, Sean admitted that other families he lived with made him take meds for it and made him feel like a zombie- Hosea left the choice for him and would respect it
Seeing Arthur doing some sketches Sean wanted to take up drawing too- they’re stick figures but he still enjoyed it, and Dutch put them up on the fridge
As soon as Sean started warming up to everyone Dutch pulled Arthur aside, commenting that Sean reminded him of Arthur when he was about that age.
Charles:
Always started his chores early
Pretended to eat what was made so he wouldn’t be an inconvenience since he was a vegan
So he started making his own vegan meals
Super polite, but he was use to family enough to not put up with bullshit
Spent his spare time making crafts and taught his siblings how to make them as well
No matter how many times Sean and John tried to have him play video games he just couldn’t get into them
Tried to understand why Arthur was angry all the time but gave up when Arthur wasn’t going to budge
Always asked Dutch and Hosea if they needed help with anything
Never actually went to school before, so he had a hard time getting use to the swing of things
Quickly decides that history is his favorite subject
Micah:
He made a point to bully his siblings (especially the younger ones for no reason)
But always cried to Dutch when they decided to retaliate
Quickly realizes that he practically has Dutch wrapped around his finger
Forced to go to therapy because of what he’s been through
Hated it at first, now he can’t wait to see his therapist -”Holy shit, Jim, you will not believe what happened.”
Constantly has nightmares of his brother
At first, Lenny and Bill slept on the couches than shared a room with Micah- it hurt his feelings
Honestly never understood why nobody liked him
Was diganoised with bipolar disorder and was having trouble coping with it
He is/was pretty damn lazy
Sadie:
Was honestly a mess from the fire
She was either crying or yelling at Bill
Dutch was extremely patient with her
She would keep herself in her room all day long
It was hard for her to engage with the family at first
All she wanted to do was sleep
One day she went to the back yard to practice shooting
That’s when she taught Bill to shoot
They quickly became best friends
Almost overnight her personality changed from moping around to fitting right in with the family
Kieran:
He was extremely skittish/anxious
Everyone would playfully call him an O’Driscoll and he hated it
He had a bad habit of hoarding food
Always tried to get Dutch’s attention during inconvenient times- since he thought that Dutch didn’t like him
John and Sean taught him to play video games
He couldn’t ever stay asleep during the first few weeks
Hosea taught him to read
School was too hard for him
Turned out after a little effort he was a whiz at the English subject/spelling
Discovered that Youtube is a calm getaway

Can You Help?
A/N - Here is another Game Grumps fic for the week. I hope you all like it, especially the prompter @fluffehballofgiggles Love y’all, have a great day.
Word Count: 1,094
           “I fucked up,” Dan muttered to himself. He thought it was be nice to set up the next console while Arin took a quick break. Dan wasn’t expecting there to be this many wires tangled back here, most of the consoles they owned sitting at this one place for some god forsaken reason. They were supposed to be in the cupboard, but most ended up sitting beneath the television. Due to this oversight, Dan was stuck. The NES was plugged in, but Dan was stuck, bound at the wrists like hand cuffs, and help wasn’t on the way anytime soon.
           Dan sat back on his knees, the cords growing a bit tighter. He knew if he pulled back more, he would start to cut of the blood flow, which would be really bad. Dan figured he could get out of this, but he just had to figure out what consoles he was connected to. He knew it wasn’t the PS4 or the Wii, as both were on the other side of the platform. He figured it wasn’t the NES, as he took care in not tangling himself with the cords as he plugged them in. He may have been connected to the Xbox 360, but if he moved the wrong console, it might tangle him more.
           “Everything plugged in?” Arin’s voice called from outside the room, finishing up his conversation with Matt and Ryan.
           “Yeah, everything’s good,” Dan called back as the door opened. Arin smiled at him, grabbing the controller from the couch, and sat down.
           “You good?”
           “Yeah,” Dan leaned behind the tv, hiding his trapped wrists. “Just trying to reorganize some of these cords. Don’t want anyone getting tangled later.”
           “C’mon, you can do that later,” Arin replied, patting Dan’s spot on the couch. “You can finish that after we play Ice Climber.”
           “Um, okay,” Dan mumbled behind the screen, having loosened one of his wrists, but was still connected to the Atari somehow. He could feel Arin’s gaze on him, a bead of sweat full of anxiety slipping down his temple.
           “Dan?” He heard the couch squeak as Arin leaned forward in his spot. “You stuck?”
           “No,” Dan replied quickly, slightly more standoffishly as he had intended. “I just like the view back here, that’s all.”
           Arin crossed his arms, brows raised. Dan muttered a short curse to himself as Arin stood up, padding across the room to him.
           “Show me,” Arin said, a parent calmly asking their kid to show them the candy they stolen from the cupboard. Dan reluctantly revealed his wrists, his arms now flecked with dust. Arin took Dan’s wrists, examining the awkward bracelets he had obtained. “Damn, good job.”
           “Can you help?” Dan asked, quietly. Frankly, he was quite embarrassed for the predicament he had put himself into, though he is happy that it was Arin that found him like this.
           “Of course,” Arin said, still holding his wrists. “But you need to cheer up a little bit.”
           “What?” Dan’s brows furrowed, his lips parting as Arin brought his wrists up, holding his arms above his head with little effort. He pushed Dan a bit closer to the tv, maneuvering him slightly his body was facing the cords, though his eyes followed all of Arin’s movements. “How is this helping?”
           “You relaxing will make this much easier for both of us,” Arin smiled, keeping one hand locked around Dan’s tangled wrists, the other making its way down to Dan’s belly. Dan flinched and pulled away as much as he could during the initial contact, but not only was he restrained by Arin’s strong hands, he was also constrained by over a thousand dollars’ worth of game consoles.
           “Nohoho,” Dan let out a stream of giggles, Arin only lightly teasing his belly, fingernails lightly scraping the fabric of his worn t-shirt. Most people would barely feel the sensation, but for Dan, the phantom touch was enough to elicit his happy giggles.
           “You just need to relax a little, Danny,” Arin cooed, fingers digging in finally, wiggling all over his thin stomach. His body jolted, though could not escape. All he could do was throw his head back and laugh. His arms tried to fall, tried to protect his sides as the five mischievous fingers climbed his ribcage, but Arin just couldn’t have that. Dan’s most sensitive spot was wide open, and he couldn’t do anything about it. Why not take advantage of the moment for a little bit?
           “Don’t you fucking dare,” Dan nearly hissed as he felt Arin’s hand hovering above the hollow of his arm. He knew his threat was empty, but what else was he going to do? It felt good to threaten Arin, until Arin finally dug in and Dan screamed.
           “I forgot how much of a sweet spot this was,” Arin said, not sure if Dan could hear him, so he just listened to Dan’s loud laughter accompanied with the occasional snort and squeal. It didn’t take very long for his laughter to go silent and wheezy, but it also didn’t take Arin very long to untangle Dan’s wrists during his onslaught. He managed to use Dan’s thrashing as a way to loosen the cords, his muscles tensing in his torso, so his arms were relaxed, and his limp hands slipped right through the restraints. He let go of Dan’s hands and waited for Dan to finally drop his arms, which did take a few seconds of mental processing. “You had your arms up for a while after I let go. It’s almost as if you wanted me to keep going.”
           “Fuck off,” Dan said, having fallen onto his back, curling into a tight ball. “That was fucking evil.”
           “Aw, c’mon. I know you would’ve done the same thing if I was in your situation,” Arin shrugged, knowing the silence Dan was giving him was confirmation. He ruffled Dan’s hair before getting to his feet. “Let’s finish an episode before you kill me. We should actually get some work done today.”
           “Five minutes, you can’t move your hands from behind your head,” Dan replied, uncurling from his little armadillo ball.
           “That’s too long.”
           “That’s what you did to me,” Dan huffed, finally getting to his feet, grin still on his face. “Say yes or I’ll kill you now.”
           “Fine,” Arin whined as Dan wiggled his fingers at him, Arin biting his lip instinctively. “Whatever you say.”
           “Good,” Dan sat down in his spot, wearing a mischievous smile for the entire episode, excited for the ten minutes of recording to be up.

TALES OF BLASTIA
Let’s talk about Tales of Vesperia.
Let me start off by saying I loved playing this game on the Switch. This is my complete biased opinion but being able to play RPGs in handheld mode is wonderful. I didn’t notice any frame rate issues and it didn’t feel clunky to play, I know that’s an issue when it comes to playing literally anything on the Switch. That being said, in handheld mode the battery life for this game sucks some major ass. I don’t even know why to be honest. I’d get like a good 2-3 hours out of it and I’d have to charge my Switch again. That was really frustrating.
I won’t get into what this game is about because it’s been done before but I will say that the story was interesting-ish. I spent a lot of time waiting for the story to actually pick up and really the most exciting parts about this game’s story was when (spoiler) Yuri kills someone or the extra tid-bits of conversation that the characters have on the side which leads me into my next point:
The characters for this game, save for Karol, are hilarious and very easy to love. All of the characters and how they interact together is really something special. I genuinely loved adventuring with them. I haven’t played most Tales games but Yuri makes it to the top of my list as one of my favorite characters in a Tales of game. I really love main characters who don’t follow the status quo in terms of being a hero. Yuri sits in the middle somewhere. He wants to do the right thing but maybe he doesn’t take the right path to get there. That sort of stuff gives us the multi-dimensional character that we need or at least that I need. I don’t want a hero like Flynn.
The battle mechanics took some getting used to. In the beginning it’s feels really really slow. Yuri starts off with 3 consecutive normal attacks and then you can use an arte after. Weapons are able to give you abilities or skills to use but you have to use the weapon long enough to unlock those skills. Some of the skills are able to help you heal throughout battle or able to add hits to your attack so you aren’t just attacking 3 times (I think I got mine up to like 6 consecutive attacks). As always you’re only allotted a certain amount of skill points to use. You’re also able to upgrade and synthesize new weapons and normally whenever any type of synthesis is involved in an RPG it goes right over my head because it’s confusing but in this game it’s really easy to forge a better weapon.
Another thing that really bugged me about this game was the lack of maps for the dungeons and the fact that i literally played the entire game without doing a single quest (I finished the game in like 30 hours or something like that.) I didn’t even know there were quests until I got lost in a later dungeon and had to pull up a guide.
A difference that I thought was interesting is that Patty’s character literally didn’t exist in the regular game for the 360 in America? So being able to play the definitive edition a lot of people got to experience her character and she’s really interesting and quirky and I love her a lot. I put her into my party late in the game and by the end I wished that I had her in my party the entire time. Her attacks are wild AF and her storyline is really great!
Overall this game was pretty good. It wasn’t the best RPG I’ve ever played but I barely put it down and I think that counts for something.
Tales of Vesperia Definitive Editon is available for PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Steam.

HI THIS IS YOUR LOCAL GARBAGE GAY BOY AND HE WANTS TO VENT ABOUT KINGDOM HEARTS
A couple of days ago i had an enligtening talk about my favorite hot garbage series with a mutual and i kind of ended up realizing i had a lot of pent up stuff about it that i never really let out
While i did vent a little already i feel like i need to put this really out of my head because it’s been consuming me in a way. And since this site is designed for just screaming random stuff into the void i wanna take advantage of that for once
Now first and foremost this is meant as a very personal thing. This is not an elaborate critique or a well thought work. This is a vent and i want this to be read as a vent by a gay with a lot of feelings about video games. ESPECIALLY about Kingdom Hearts and some stuff about KH3.
Now let’s get to the meat of this course of mind screaming
I’ve been into Kingdom Hearts for a very long time. The first game i played was Kingdom Hearts II (the original KH was kinda hard to find here for some reason) circa 2005/2006. Bear in mind i had no idead what KH was. Game advertisement wasn’t (and still kind of isn’t) a big thing here in Brasil specially if you were a poor kid like me. Hell consoles were pretty inacessible to most of the people i was close with and me and other 2 kids must’ve had a PS2 in the same time frame. The main way you would know about new or cool games was through word of mouth or recognizing brands like Castlevania and Mega Man.
But i was always kind of a freaky little avant-garde child which meant i ended up having a very different taste from most of the people around me. I had like 1 other friend who had actually played a Final Fantasy around let alone something like Shin Megami Tensei for an exemple which i also didn’t even knew was a thing. And i’ve always tried to find something new. Something that gave me some new experience. I’ve ended up playing a lot of more niche games like Drakengard and the Atelier Iris games (god i still love 2 and 3 a lot) and it was this mindset that eventually led me into the game that had a bunch of random anime kids and disney characters in it’s cover.
To say that i was confused by KH2 is an understatement. I knew absolutelly nothing about the previous games. Who is this “Sora”? Who was the red haired man? Why the fuck am i fighting with a giant key? Again what the hell is up with the Disney characters? Also bear in mind i must’ve been 9/10 yo brazillian kid whose entire english vocabulary came from video games and a couple of songs. Some stuff wasn’t even the plot getting dense it was just me not getting the actual language.
And yet it’s also an understatement to say the i fell very deeply in love with that weird little game. The combat was great. The plot had SO MUCH DRAMA and i knew only about 1/3 of what was happening at any given time. Keyblades where fun and ridiculous. Demyx was a bitch.
As soon as i’ve finished KH2 for the first time i used what little internet i had back then to learn more. I found out there was a game for the easy emulated GBA. It kind of sucked but it was more Kingdom Hearts. Being unable to locate a copy of KH1 for a while i did the only thing i could actually do: i’ve played and replayed KH2 to exaustion. I did most of the stuff except a couple of the minigames and gummy routes because they where boring. The feeling of learning how to fight against Sephiroth, mastering his moves and eventually being able to beat him with a Kingdom Key in proud was a big moment for me. Beating all the Hades cups felt great.
About a year later i was able to get a copy of KH1 and by this time Re:CoM was out so i got that too. Played both of them throughly even thought KH1 clumsy mechanics kick my ass to this day probably.
Then another year passes i hear two new games where coming out... to consoles i didn’t own and honestly i couldn’t justify the cost of to my parents. I was pretty bummed but still i kept getting invested. Hell i was already balls deep into this series and only dreamed of how it would take off in the future. I even remember kind of writing a “script” for a sequel that i tried to make with two other randoms in RPG Maker. Never went anywhere and i know in my heart it sucked but still. That was how into this i was. The prerelease hype for Days was killing me even. Member XIV? How?
Also side note: to my edgy ass 12/13 year old self the idea of playing as Organizattion XIII was literally a dream.
Days came out and if you where like me in the good old days of youtube videos that had like 5 minutes at max then you know that video game let’s play were almost impossible to do. I had to get a LOT of info from second hand about what actually happened in Days. Then i ended up getting a “decent” pc and was able to emulate it with absolute WORST frame rate. Still it worked and i was able to know what was happening.
But BBS was a completly separate beast. PSP emulation was basically non-existant when it came out so it actually took me a couple of years to actually play it. I had a friend that had a PSP (and that to this day i feel only got a PSP because i kept raving about it having both a KH game and a Final Fantasy fighting game on it because he was 100% that little shit but that is completly besides any point) and of course he couldn’t lend me because it was pretty expensive around here and that’s a very useless tangent.
Anyway time passes as it must and just as Sora fell deeper and deeper into the realms of sleep i too fell into as much Kingdom Hearts stuff as i could. The complex theories, the AMVs (GOD the AMVs), the plot summaries for games i didn’t play, all that good shit. So for years i’ve built within myself this... tension i shall call. The grand plot momentum that mr Nomura seemed to be building. The misterious indentities the hinted at hidden plots. The nature of stuff that seemed very vague and opaque. And as the new games where released it seemed more and more that they where building blocks into the grand prize: Kingdom Hearts 3.
Now here’s the thing. I don’t 100% agree of the narrative that we waited “13 years” for KH3. I think if you where actually a fan of the series back then then each game in it’s own way seemed to be it’s own event. With that i want to say the while we ALL waited for KH3 for me at least it seemed it needed time to build up.
Now here’s the thing. Between BBS and DDD being both in consoles i didn’t own and me getting an Xbox 360 (PS3 prices where absolutelly INSANE here) i seemed to drift a bit away from KH. While before i waited for new game releases with baited breath i now found myself very blasé about DDD. I was getting used to it i guess. Also high school came and a lot of stuff started changing. KH felt like a bit too connected to my childhood too i guess. I was still a fan and still loved it to death but KH ended fading away a little for me even if it lighted a fire in me when people talked about it. This must’ve been around 2010.
I think it wasn’t until KH3 was formally announced that it all came back to me. The drive to find and consume and engage with as much of KH lore and theories as possible. Also i didn’t really get into “proper social networks” as a whole until 2012/2013. Weirdo i know. By then consuming these thing was a lot easier. Internet was a lot more acessible. I could just open up a tab of a KH wiki in my phone and read away from there.
And there was this rush y’know. This thing of finally seeing a finish line. Not that actually expected or even wish for KH to end but it was KH3! The big one! And remember the tension i’ve mentioned earlier? It was always kind of present and it ended up skyrocketing during this period. I was already knowledgeable about KH but during this time i was almost a goddamn lore master. I knew the whole gig inside and out. Even the weird shit from DDD. The stuff they added to the collections just kept it going too. As did X/UX (which in my grand KH tradition i too didn’t play but i think most people feel me here).
All a big ball of complex yarn and plot and madness that would SURELLY burst with KH3. After all this time all this tension it would come. Release. Answers.
But to me that was the aspect in which KH3 failed.
Now don’t get me wrong i actually like KH3. Quite a lot. And Nomura did apparently tied up a lot of arcs. The lost are found and saved. Piss Grandpa Xehanort is dead.
But it didn’t release my tension. It didn’t burst it into the magic fireworks and ecstasy. The tension is still here. Hell the tension seems even stronger now.
And a lot of it has to with how KH3 seems to still be hiding so many fucking cards from us. Literally in one case. It was a vague feeling of unceartainty before but when i came through the Sleeping Worlds theory it just RUSHED onto me. The story doesn’t feel complete.
Now this is not the same as FFXV. I have a couple of... harsh opinions about it and it’s plot and story are front and center on the list. That story was absolutelly unfinished but not in the same way. To me it feels like Nomura just HID parts of the story. We are not getting the full picture. A lot of shit is really really REALLY weird. I’m still not over Riku’s sudden haircut.
But here’s the real gag to me. Nier: Automata gave me the same feeling the first time i played it. But then i came upon route B. And then Route C. and that’s when the TRUE game showed itself. Nier kept a lot hidden but it was hidden within itself. If you just keep playing you actually can access those hidden parts and eventually you reach your true goal. The actual ending. An ending so final that you might even like giving up your save data to help somebody else achieve it too is the only true option.
Yet KH3 has no such crowning grace. At least not for now. And that’s half the reason i made this.
KH3 feels incomplete but in a way i could really love if the game eventually completed itself. Reading the Sleeping Worlds theory i was like “omg this makes VERY much sense. but if it makes so much sense why isn’t it in the game?”. And then it clicked. DLC. It’s 100% possible the actual plot may come as DLC.
But an even darker thought crossed my mind and it’s filing me with actual rage: This is meant to be another game. This is the Powers That Be (Nomura, Disney, Square-Enix, take your pick...) unaturally extending this “Saga” beyond it’s ending point. If it does turn out that KH3 had some dream hijinks going on then it was 100% possible and BETTER to include that in the actual game. But since KH is known for having so many side games what is the harm in doing another right?
Well you harm the integrity of your plot. I know we say the plot is hot garbage but come the fuck on that is what is holding us here. Or at least it’s what is holding me for so long. Setting up another saga is absolutelly fine but breaking away for you ending like this is even worse. How? Why? The why is probably money but still.
Or maybe KH3 is just meant as that. There is no twist not weirdness. Maybe all that is by design y’know.
This is long enough already. I’m tired. I started writing this at 2:30 am. It’s about 4am now. I slept very little last night.
This is a big colletion of nothing i guess. Not even sure it helped me. Oh well.

Mega Man Network Transmission
Tumblr media
Mega Man Network Transmission is one of those games I've had forever due to buying it at GameStop back when they actually regularly stocked GameCube games.  It took about six and a half hours to finish.  Through the magic of emulation, I used an Xbox 360 controller and had to play around a little with the controller settings in Dolphin since the GC and X360 layouts are a little different.
Tumblr media
Nothing serious, considering you never need to use either stick.  Jump on Xbox B, fire on A, use chips on Y.
TLDR The Good
Callbacks to the Classic series - From the disappearing block puzzle in Ice Man's stage to having reversed gravity sections in Gravity Man's stage, people who are familiar with the Mega Man Classic games will see some nice references to the Robot Masters here in the stage gimmicks.  Some viruses come straight from the Classic games and aren't found in the other Battle Networks!
Great music - Even the "basic Internet" theme is high-energy and gets you in the mood to beat the crap out of some viruses.  Every other stage has its own theme and I found myself not really liking only a handful of tracks...amusingly enough, the remix of the home theme from MMBN was one of them.
Flexibility/Customization - Much like the BN games, you can stick whatever chips in your Folder, but there are no Chip Codes and copies of a single chip stack to a set limit instead of each taking up a Folder slot.  Chips also helpfully tell you in what situations they can or can't be used (on the ground, in the air, on a ladder, while using a wire hanger) as well as how many MP each use burns.  PowerUPs return for the Mega Buster to boost its damage, its rapid-fire capabilities, and enables/quickens charging too.
Tumblr media
Shh, I X series now.  The wire hangers show up in a few stages but there aren’t any vertical ones at least.
TLDR The Bad
Early-game hell - Your Mega Buster starts out horribly weak, you have a small variety of chips that are also weak, and said chips are your best means of actually killing viruses to get more chips.  The first boss in the game can kill you in about four hits with the right Armor and mercy invincibility is extremely short.  It's not that bad afterwards but it's far from the easiest sidescroller Mega Man game, potentially worse if you're not used to how chips operate in the context of the gameplay.  Like having an MP meter but also so many uses per chip.
Some grinding required - You'll need to kill viruses quick and with little to no damage taken to get them to drop chips, and you'll need to pick up Zenny coins in the field to fund increasingly-expensive upgrades and other chip purchases.  This ties back into the hard start but at least you can immediately use chips you pick up if you’re already using them, or once you shuffle your Folder if not.
RNG screwage potential - Just like the core series, you can still end up with a bad draw of cards in the Custom menu.  You'll have to wait longer than in the BN games for the Custom gauge to fill due to the more actiony aspect of the gameplay, but you can get up to ten chips to show up on future draws and you can eventually find/buy FastGauge and FullGauge consumable items.
Trying something new here with the review format.  Why not put some TLDRs on top?
It's been a month since Lan and MegaMan.EXE defeated the WWW's Life Virus and peace has returned to the land.  But now there are rumors of an even worse virus making the rounds and a tainted vaccine that's making Navis go crazy.  Time to jack in and uncover the mystery of the Zero Virus!  Huh, where have I heard that term before?
Tumblr media
TrustMe.exe has encountered a problem and needs to restart.
Mega Man Network Transmission is a mashup of Classic Mega Man platforming with elements of the Battle Network series.  MegaMan.EXE runs, jumps, shoots, and slides through a variety of stages while navigating around traps and destroying viruses in his way.  You place chips in a Folder and these are randomly selected when you call the Custom screen and you can then use said chips a limited number of times, limited both by what you find and buy but also the arbitrary limit the game sets.  I didn't play one stage long enough to see if completely-expended chips were made reusable when you burned through the rest of your Folder, however.  There's also an MP bar that limits your chip spam but at least it constantly regenerates.  The elemental strength/weakness system is still in place and since this takes place before Battle Network 2, you still have elemental Armors to mitigate damage instead of Styles.
Tumblr media
Hitboxes are pretty tight so I’m unfortunately eating the shock in this picture.  I need a better system to take screenshots.
I mentioned earlier that the Mega Buster is lackluster at the start and it's telling when it takes you ten shots to kill a basic Canodumb, or three with maxed Damage.  It gets better with more levels in Charge, to the point it almost becomes a gamebreaker because of how quick it is at max Charge, limited by a full-power charge having annoyingly short range and you losing your charge level when you take damage.  When aura-equipped enemies start appearing near the end, your Buster won't be able to make them vulnerable so try not to neglect your Folder like I did.
Chips mostly behave the same as they do in their core series with several adapted to 2D gameplay, and there are still Program Advances too.  Even a basic Cannon + Hi-Cannon + M-Cannon combo gives you ridiculous firepower that also makes you invulnerable for several seconds--and it only uses one copy of each chip in the combo!  You can only have one active chip/PA at a time of your ‘hand’ of five and you use L/R to swap through them, or you can trigger Standby Mode and freely swap while the game is halted (though the Standby Mode notification blanks out most of the action).
Unlike the regular Battle Network games, you don't play as Lan at all.  He shows up in the story and he tools around in his room when you're not jacked in, but that's it, no skating through the overworld this time around.  Several characters show up in portrait form but otherwise aren't even given models.  And speaking of models, every Navi you beat creates a toy figure in Lan's room of that Navi which I thought was a nice little touch.  And because I don't really have anywhere else to fit in this complaint, the Japanese-only audio kind of got on my nerves and very little of it is actually subtitled.
Tumblr media
The jack in sequence is kinda impressive the first couple of times, but you can’t seem to skip it--and you have to watch it in reverse when you jack out!
 Stages are pretty basic Mega Man fare.  Flat sections, sections you can slide through, ladders, enemies, spikes (that actually only deal 200 damage this time around so you can survive them after several HPMemory upgrades), instant death pits, the works!  Work your way to the end of the stage and face the boss in a battle to the death.  You're given a confirmation before entering the arena and almost all of them have a big health recovery behind the portal so you can heal up before duking it out.  I oddly got Mega Man ZX vibes with the way you enter new stages from the central Internet stage (ZX) and where you pick from stages without knowing who the boss is beforehand (Advent).  I mentioned the Classic Robot Master stage references but not every stage has them (SwordMan's doesn't seem much like the one in MM8) or the boss doesn't match the stage (ShadowMan's stage has the platforms from Guts Man's in MM1).

I generally get frustrated when taking on disappearing block puzzles, but none of them in this game were all that bad.
Progression starts you against FireMan.EXE as the first boss, then you have to track down GutsMan.EXE, and you're given small batches of stages to choose from before getting railroaded again.  Navi difficulty is kind of all over the place--BrightMan was my bane yet SwordMan that came after him was no problem.  Interestingly, you can slide between the legs of some Navis and come out unharmed.  There's an area on the map where you can refight defeated Navis for their chips based on your performance.  Some bosses have gimmicks like BrightMan’s shield and a counterattack, or GravityMan having a tiny vulnerable area while you manually switch gravity by jumping.
  I found the game to be pretty hard, a bit more than the average Mega Man sidescroller.  I've played every Classic game apart from Mega Man 11 and I still had a bit of trouble, like QuickMan's stage having instant-death lasers that never turn off once activated.  There are other parts where you need pretty good timing on your jumps and your slides to avoid unnecessary damage.  I wouldn't say the game is unfairly hard other than at the start so if you can soldier through that, you might be able to enjoy yourself.  Lan will always notify you when you hit zero BackUps, so you should probably jack out to not only refill your extra lives, but also to keep everything you picked up during this outing.  Having to work back to the boss room is a chore, but being able to exit a stage before defeating the boss is very rare in any Mega Man game.
Tumblr media
You can’t seem to jack out during a boss battle and you can only save in Lan’s Room, so try to be careful!
And I did enjoy the game.  Great music and fun familiar gameplay were a great combo, and it didn't outstay its welcome.  Farm 10 DoubleJump chips off of the flying penguin enemies in WaterComp's starting area and you'll be able to explore a little more in the cyberworlds since there are no Mega Man X-styled permanent upgrades or anything.  I found the controls to be pretty tight and there are a lot of chips to collect, a secret boss to unlock, and a variation on the ending too.  If you're a fan of 2D platformer Mega Man games, you'd probably like this one.  And even if you're more into Battle Network, the game isn't so hard as to be unfair.
And if you’re emulating, you can abuse savestates to get through the bank lasers.  Cough.
Tumblr media
More like, “I can feel wanton cyber-murder coming on!” in my experience.

My First GDC: 2018
It has become something of a yearly ritual where I get an email from Mike Dailly over at YoYo Games asking if I’m going to GDC, and I respond with my reason of why I’m not going. I’m in the middle of game development, I’m in the middle of something, literally anything that was going on right at that moment was enough for me to skip another year of GDC. Maybe next year, maybe in two years, who knows.
This year was different, in that I didn’t really have any particular reason not to go. My game was fully released, I was in a good place as far as patches go, I had money in the bank. This was the year. I had to commit. I knew if I didn’t go this year, I would never go.
It’s not that I didn’t want to go, it just became easier to say no. That came hand in hand with a lot of things in my life, I think. At that moment, I had reached a breaking point. I was tired of letting myself be the only reason I wasn’t going to do something.
Yes, I responded, I am absolutely pretty sure I’m going this year, maybe, and I’ll let you know at the end of January for sure, or maybe early February.
Tumblr media
I’m not particularly out going, though I’ve been making hard strides to do so over the last few years. The hard part of going to a convention, I would soon realize, is that I didn’t have a team to bring along with me. It has mostly just been me and freelancers over the last few years. Someday I’ll change that and open my own studio. I had hoped GDC was going to be helpful in showing me that path.
One of the first talks I attended, Failing to Fail: The Spiderweb Software Way, seemed a great place to start. I had somehow misread it and assumed it was talking about the Spiderweb Solitaire game on the Xbox 360 that I really enjoyed playing. Looking it up now, there’s not even a game that exists that is called “Spiderweb Solitaire” nor can I find anything like remotely resembles the game in my head so I am at a complete loss as to why I thought any of this.
“A lot of you probably don’t know me or any of these games” Jeff Vogel said as his array of titles was displayed on the projector, most of which were hardcore RPG games. That’s a weird path to a Solitaire game, I wonder how that happened? It was a fantastic talk, with lots of humor and self-depreciation. He commanded the room easily, which was completely full, many of whom who knew exactly who Jeff Vogel was, unlike me apparently. It didn’t matter, as by the end of the session, I was a fan. It was a great start to my GDC week.
Tumblr media
On Tuesday I had a chance to go to the Humble party, as well as the NoClip documentary that was showing later that night with a live Q&A with Danny O’Dwyer. The doc seemed like a natural place to be- I really enjoyed NoClip’s docs, I wanted to meet Danny, and the social interactivity would be low. Perfect.
Outside on the street, I was frantically looking for the entrance to the screening room. The entire center is a maze of doors, stairs, exits and entrances, and by the time I had found it I had wasted twenty minutes. As I walked up to the door, someone exited. “Session is full.” I couldn’t believe it.
I stormed back to my hotel room, mad that I missed it, angry at myself for being so stupid in not finding the entrance fast enough. There was still the Humble party, something that I likely wouldn’t have gone to if I had been able to go to the screening. I felt that all-too familiar feeling of having myself be the one reason not to go somewhere. In a sense, maybe I was going to the screening so I didn’t have to be left with this decision of not going somewhere because I was too afraid to do so. What was I scared of, really? No one knew who I was, and if it’s not something I liked, I could leave easily. I grabbed my coat, opened the Lyft app, and somehow found myself on the way to a party.
Tumblr media
“Yo welcome to the Folsom Street Foundry we got a ton of pizza so be sure to head to the back and grab some slices!”
As I shifted through the crowds I became acutely aware of how I looked: head darting back and forth, aimlessly wandering through people, not really with any purpose or direction. Immediately I looked to see if anyone was doing the same thing, and there were. I went up to introduce myself to them.
There is a certain relief when the first thing I tell someone is that I don’t normally do these things and I’m a bit nervous and they respond in the same way. If you don’t go to parties, you don’t go and meet people who also don’t go. It was only at GDC where you felt like you were surrounded by equally nervous people who were in the same position as I was: doing something out of their element. I talked to one person, then three, then five and ten. It got easier and easier.
“Hey we just got another batch of pizza delivered everyone, so come grab a slice or three because we have way too much pizza! Seriously let’s all go to town on this pizza, don’t be shy!”
What I found to be the easiest thing in the world to enjoy were videogames, which were stationed all around the hall. The power of videogames can always bring a group of people together, and I found myself having a great time with several people who had never played a game of Gang Beasts/Duck Game/Nidhogg and other games on the multiplayer circuit. I did a high five with someone when we beat a Cuphead boss, explained the dynamics of Duck Game to three other people who I easily steamrolled over but kept it close to make it exciting, and lost miserably in Gang Beasts, one of the few games that seems to level the skill level even if you’ve played it for years. None of these experiences were particularly new to me, but the added dynamic of strangers in a new city playing and having a fun time was a warm comfort blanket in a cold city.
Tumblr media
“Last Call is going to be at 11:30 everyone, and please be sure to grab a few slices of pizza because we still have plenty! Let’s all enjoy some pizza!”
I did another round of aimless walking and found a random sofa with two people sitting in it, one of whom looked like Rami Ismail. Is that him? That totally looks like him! I quickly grabbed my phone, pulled up his twitter profile, and compared a photo of him. I am 75% sure its him. 85%. Did more photo searches. 95%.
He got up, and I asked, hey are you Rami? Keep in mind that whatever the correct way to pronounce Rami I did the opposite of, that I am 100% sure and I will never look it up to find out otherwise.
“Yes I am!”
“Hey, my name is David Galindo! I made Cook, Serve, Delicious!”
“What?”
“COOK SERVE DELICIOUS!” (I would typically tell people who I am immediately because it was an easy way to remind myself that I wasn’t some kind of fraud/phony and that I actually deserved to be there, a nice side bonus of impostor syndrome).
“Oh yeah!”
“I loved Luftrausers!” (I love Luftrausers).
“Thanks!”
“This is my first GDC!”
Someone came up behind Rami and wanted to introduce him to a friend of his. My time was up, but I was happy. I did it. I started to walk away.
“Wait wait!” Rami told them. He turned back to me and gathered his thoughts for a quick second. “What are your goals for GDC?”
My goals? I literally had no other goals that night but to talk to someone, let alone talk to an industry star. I found myself answering, “to learn,” which is just about the most generic stupid thing you could hear anyone say.
What surprised me the most is that Rami didn’t want to brush me aside, he wanted to make sure we finished our conversation before talking with someone else. That meant so much to me. I got a firsthand account on why Rami is so loved in the industry.
“Look I’m going to be real with you all: we ordered way too much pizza. Please, please take some, we have to throw it all away after tonight. Please! We have so much pizza! Please!!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next night, around the time Rami was getting his GDC Ambassador Award in front of a massive audience, I was inside the screening room for the last film in the festival, called Insert Coin. I was determined not to miss this one and showed up about an hour early in the rain. I struck up a conversation with some people in line, which had the added benefit of being in a mostly empty lobby. In a city where a quiet space was about medium yelling to the person next to you, the silence filled the room. I never appreciated a quiet conversation more.
As we ushered into the theater, I saw a crowd of people come into the theater. Oh my gosh, I told the person in front of me, do you know who that is? It’s Ed Boon!
She didn’t respond immediately. “The creator of Mortal Kombat!” I followed up. “Oh, yeah, of course!”
The documentary was not finished, and we only saw three segments with some temporary audio mixes, but it was immensely entertaining. Setting up the rise of Midway in the coin-op arcade glory days, the film talked mostly about Mortal Kombat and NBA JAM in the segments we saw, with some of the familiar beats (Mortal Kombat: corrupting today’s youth?) and some truly astonishing revelations I had no idea about (NBA JAM made one billion dollars in revenue…in quarters.)
The lights went up and questions were asked to some of the Midway people in attendance. I was somewhat unfamiliar with the history of NBA JAM, which was the main focus, and I missed out on that golden era of arcade gaming. But I was determined to ask a question…something, anything. I quickly put together some ideas in my head.
“Ok, a question in the back?”
Something to do with the rise of arcade violence? No, that was covered already. What about other NBA games? I didn’t know enough to reference anything. I wanted to ask a question, but finding an actual good question was harder than I thought.
“Ok how about you?”
Maybe Mortal Kombat? What about its competitors? Think of some…Eternal Champions, Primal Rage, yes, those games make me feel like I know what I’m talking about. Ok, I can do this!
“And time for one last question…yes?”
“Yes, how did y’all feel at the time about competitors nipping at your heels with cookie cutter games like Eternal Champions and Primal Rage?” (Nice, I nailed it.)
“Hah, actually we have a Primal Rage dev here today!” He points to a man in the front row, who immediately looks behind him to see who asked that question.
Tumblr media
There are so many more stories I have to share, like the moment where, upon finding out that PixelJunk Monsters 2 was announced, I made a dash to the Chunsoft booth which turned out to be a conference room, slid some money under the door and tweeted about it, and by the end of the day ended up getting a hands on private demo by none other than Dylan Cuthbert himself (due to the tweet, not the money). I am confident that I was the biggest PJM fan in attendance, and if they didn’t know it then, they knew it when I was asking a ton of inside ballpark questions as the demo was played.
Another story is being able to meet some people for the first time and tell them how much they changed my life. Meeting up with friends that I only knew online but finally met that week. Meeting new people, but not enough new people, something I’m already working out in my head for next year. Feeling a renewed sense of purpose, of loving game development. Experiences I’ve never had before. Moments I’ll never forget. Moments just for me.
Tumblr media
For that one week, game developers took over the city. That’s what it truly felt like, with our badges flopping around all over downtown. You could not be in the downtown area without passing by a fellow convention-goer.
As the conference ended and I left one last party that Friday night, I made a quick detour to Super Duper Burger to grab a shake. I walked back down to my hotel one block away, and I saw many people walking but no one was wearing a badge anymore. No one was left from the conference, no one was walking to any sessions, there were no other events or parties to attend, and I suddenly felt very alone, back to how it always has been. Maybe I should change that.

All for the video game ask. (do I need to mention only if u r comfy w/ it at this point). Love you!!
alright u done done it now bitchhhhhhhh are u READY 4 THIS SHIT (dshfa;lkj thamk i am so pumped ur my biggest enabler) i already answered a couple of these for anon but i’ll go ahead and answer them here as well
1. First game you played obsessively?hmmmm i wanna say the legend of spyro the eternal night? i played it so much i could beat the whole game in four hours. i’ve heard lots of ppl actually hated the legend of spyro trilogy but honestly they can suck my ass i loved them
2. A game that has influenced you creatively? Writing, drawing, etc.uh besides my answer for anon of skyrim not many games have actually just straight up influenced my art style but i’ve been playing this game called Fe (not fire emblem just Fe) and i really want to draw fanart for it bc it’s super cute if that Counts as influence?
3. Who did you play with as a kid?if this is meant in terms of co-op games nobody bc we didn’t have anyif just in general, my sister for the most part. i’d watch her play things like resident evil and she’d help me with the hard parts in medievil and crash bandicoot warped (read: racing levels)
4. Who do you play with now?myself lmao i don’t rly like co-op and multiplayer games and i prefer to play most games by myself

8. Rarest/Most expensive game in your collection?uh well back when i had a job i spent A Lot of money (to me it was a lot) to get the collectors edition of the last guardian so that would be my most expensive. other than that i would have to say one of the hardest to find (maybe not rare but not common)games i have currently is medievil for ps1 bc it took me like a week of searching to find a copy in good condition online for sale bc i rly wanted to own it again since we had to sell all my old games when we moved to oregon which sucked bc we had a Bunch of cool games (mostly early ps era)

Friendship
When I think about it, I meet some of the best people. I make friends with the best people. The only problem is...
They're always so far away.
The friends I made in high school were wonderful. They tried to bring me out of my shell, they tried to involve me in things. But I was too broken. Too afraid to be myself because I didn't know who I was anymore. I didn't know how to have fun. I regret spending so much time with my ex, so much time wasted trying to be a good girlfriend but not knowing how to even do that. I should've spent more time with my friends and not have felt guilty about the times when I did and he wasn't invited. He was always somewhat offended by that. But they were my friends. Not his. His friends never invited me to things, so why should mine? But beyond that, that group of people, those friends of mine, they were fun. I miss being apart of a group like that.
But before I met that group (or rather became a part of it) I had another friend. I met her back in freshman year. She was another flute player, one that for some reason I just wanted to be friends with. I'm pretty sure that I asked her to come have a sleepover with me one day out of the blue. I've never regreted having her as my friend. Sure, she can be difficult and a bit distant at times, but so is everyone else. She's a good soul, but sometimes doesn't know how to take care of herself. I try my best to help but I'm not very good at it. I remember how much I dragged her around with me back in school. Sometimes I just didn't want to be alone with my ex I guess, so I convinced her to come with us. That group of friends didn't like her much, but I think it was more of the friends she had rather than her. They actually told me that she was pretty cool, they just didn't like the people around her. I think I told her that once but I'm not sure if she believed me. This friend, me and her still talk and hang out from time to time. She's been through rough times and I only wish I could help her more. But like I said, I've never regretted picking her out of the crowd to be my friend.
But before her came my Alaskan. He showed up the summer before 8th grade, the first day I got my Xbox 360. I remember yelling at him for pronouncing my gamertag wrong. Best decison I've made. This guy has the best soul. He's a few years younger than me, two I think. And he's always made me smile and laugh. No matter what, he finds a way to cheer me up. Just a month or two ago, I wanted to get a bad story off my chest, get a step closer to letting go. He listened to me try to remember all the things I repressed. And then, he started talking about weird things and telling me stories about what he did. We somehow got on the topic of things his family had taken from his room. So, out of spite, he went to the fridge and said "there's a coke zero in here. It's mine now. I don't even like this drink, but I'm angry at them. So I'm gonna drink it. *a soda popping open and him taking a sip* ugh. Disgusting. *another sip*" After telling that story, worrying about how he would see me after, he did this. He took a soda out of spite. There are many other instances of this. He's been my best friend for around 7 years...But I've never met him face to face. I'm convinced that when I do, when he gives me his promised hug, I might finally feel like the world may actually be okay. Just because he is that type of person who would somehow fix the world.
Somewhere during high school, I was playing GTA online with my brother and maybe some of his friends. We were just running around, blowing things up and driving cars. But this was a GTA online lobby, nothing could ever be peaceful. Eventually, these two people just starting chasing us and constantly killing us. After a while, they invite me to a party. I was fed up and wanted them to stop killing me...So I joined. Those two were surprised I joined the party, and even more so whenever I turned out to be an actual girl. They turned out to be surprisingly fun and only a year younger than me. They started to protect me instead of killing me and they brought me random fun vehicles. So I started playing with them whenever I was online. After maybe a few months to a year, we all just kind of stopped playing. School was back and I was in my later years so the workload was a bit more. Plus, my ex was jealous that I was playing with these random guys online instead of with him (but they were more fun, so can I really be blamed?). Me and those guys stopped talking for maybe a year or two. But one day, one of them messages me. After talking a bit, we decide to meet up since we live in the same state. We talked about meeting up back when we talked more, so it wasn't really an odd thing go us. I made the joke one night that I didn't want to go to town alone to buy a fish, that he should drive up here to go to town with me. Funny thing is, he agreed. I didnt think he'd do it but the next day, they showed up at my house. I discovered that I had an odd knack for picking the best friends, even over the internet. I've told the story of when I went down to visit them already and I'll probably write about the next time I visit them.
There's one last group, so don't you dare think I've forgotten about them. These guys are from California and think that Cali is so much better than Texas. They're wrong of course but I think I showed them Texas's wrath via a tote full of glitter. Anyway, I met these guys on overwatch. Apparently I was a good mercy player and they wanted to play more matches with me. Totally a trap, because then I somehow became the healer of the group. These guys are fun though. And they're always there for me, just like all my friends. They've heard me be depressed, happy, tipsy, drunk off of laughing too much (though when that happenes they usually think I'm actually drunk somehow). These guys have their own problems, but yet when I come to them to complain, they let me. They don't say "Oh but my life is so much worse" they just let me let it all out and then they usually just convince me to play a game and try their best to cheer me up. They give me crap a lot and make me the joke, but I know it's all in good fun and if I could do it back to them, I would. I'm forever glad I ran into them by chance. They're good people and somehow I managed to find a little online family with them.
This is a long post. I didn't mean for that to happen (and just think of how much more i could say). I just wanted to think of how lucky I am to have met these people. To have picked them out of the blue. All of my friends are the best...even if they're so far from me. I've reached some of them but I do intent to reach all of them.
So y'all, if you're reading this for some reason, just wait for me to reach y'all. Or if you're one of the ones I've reached already, know that every moment I spent with you, i never regretted it and I never will. I took it for granted a lot of the time, and I will try to never do that again.
Distance is a bitch.
But lucky for y'all, I'm stubborn as hell and won't let distance win.
