I’m gonna be honest I didn’t realize the new 52 messed with Kon that much till I read your post and now I can’t get over the potential. I’m a Tim/Kon girly at heart so I would devour anything you write exploring the 52 vs typical Kon. Also Time being in a clone sandwich is 👌.

the new-52 messed Kon up SO bad it's ridiculous. like, to the point i would personally argue he's a completely unrelated character to pre-Flashpoint/Rebirth Kon. his personality, his suit, his origin, all different. the only real similarities are the name and powerset. and even New-52!Kon's powers are slightly different from pre-Flashpoint!Kon. New-52!Kon is a clone of a future version of Jon Lane Kent, cloned by N.O.W.H.E.R.E. to provide genetic material to Jon Lane Kent, whose body was not handling being half human/half Kryptonian well, it was a whole thing. New-52!Kon is also where we get the infamous "Kon-El means 'abomination of the house of El' and Kara basically named him a slur in Kryptonian culture" tidbit, because that is the only time that's canon. (originally Kon-El was a name gifted by Clark to accept Kon as his family way back in the 90s) he also never went by Conner Kent. New-52!Kon just straight up didn't have any real human identity or connections, outside of being very close to Tim and some Titans.

the very TLDR of Kon's history is: during post-Crisis/pre-Flashpoint, a clone called Superboy is created by CADMUS. at first, he's considered to be a clone of a dude named Paul Westfield and is not Kryptonian whatsoever, he was simply made to look like Superman and only has Tactile Telekinesis as a power. then, it was made canon that actually he was a clone of Lex Luthor and Clark Kent, but Lex hid this fact and slowly, Kon developed more Kryptonian powers. he's given the name Kon-El by Clark, and is taken in by the Kents, getting the name Conner Kent. then Flashpoint happens, we get the New-52, and we're given the above version of Kon-El, who is a clone of Jon Lane Kent, created by N.O.W.H.E.R.E. who has mostly very strong telekinesis powers and some Kryptonian powers. he's with the Titans for a bit, then at the end of the New-52, he kills some aliens and feels bad about it so he decides to fuck off and is never seen again, it's presumed he's dead but never confirmed. then Rebirth happens and DC makes Jon Kent the current Superboy, we get Supersons and all that, and it's assumed that no version of Kon-El exists. just at all. he's not around whatsoever, Jon is our only Superboy. *but* in 2019, we get a new Young Justice run and the pre-Flashpoint Kon-El is back, and we're given the explanation of: Kon got accidentally teleported to this alternate realm called Gemworld and then Flashpoint happened, and since that was a Crisis Event that changed the timeline, the poor lad got *erased* from the timeline, causing most people to *not fucking remember him* and for him to remember a timeline that no longer exists. some of the Young Justice team vaguely remember him, Ma and Pa Kent remember him, but notably, Clark *does not remember him*. it's not an issue of "Clark ignored Kon in favor of Jon" it's an issue of "Kon was erased from the timeline and didn't exist for years bc he was stuck in Gemworld and Clark just doesn't remember Kon or Kon's timeline" which to me, is far more tragic but i digress. since then, Kon has been back and is present in most significant Superfamily runs, with his own recent mini-series, Superboy: Man of Tomorrow. (which was very good btw)

so basically: the New-52 fucked Kon up so bad they wrote him out of comics for years and then brought back the pre-Flashpoint version, but never *explicitly* killed the New-52 version off. so hypothetically, it's possible that there are currently two characters existing in the DC universe named Kon-El who have been Superboy. and like i said above, one of New-52!Kon's only real significant relationships was with Tim, it was the only thing the New-52 managed to get right about Superboy, his closeness to Tim. they have a *lot* of moments that read incredibly queer. and ofc, it's just outright confirmed in Dark Crisis: Young Justice that Tim had a crush on pre-Flashpoint!Kon at some point. so while comics are intent on pretending New-52!Kon doesn't exist, i am intent on putting Tim in a clone sandwich.

because i do think it's fun to play with Tim having genuine feelings and potentially a relationship with both of them. and the fucked up nature of him not fully *remembering* his relationship with pre-Flashpoint!Kon (which is a canon thing, in YJ(2019) Tim has vague memories of Kon he's struggling to piece together and understand why he cares about this guy he doesn't recognize so much) and how frustrating that is for Tim. he knows he loves Kon, but it's all foggy besides that. and so it's even *more* fucked up if Tim dated New-52!Kon before he got emo and ran off into the unknown. obviously in canon no one has told current Kon about New-52!Kon bc comics are doing the good ol' tried and true of "sweep that shit under the rug" but for fanfic, i think it's fun to ask the question of: would anyone *tell* Kon? especially Tim? who now remembers dating both versions of them? would he admit to Kon that briefly, he had another Kon? how would Tim cope with that and move on? personality wise, they could not be more different. they dress and act and look different. they're not the same person, but there's certainly a questionable factor of Tim's dating history including two Kon-Els.

the idea i've had for a while is Tim slowly starting to date pre-Flashpoint!Kon again. it feels familiar and like home. and Tim has grieved and accepted that wherever New-52!Kon is, he doesn't want to come home, he didn't love TIm enough to stay and try. so Tim takes the Kon he has, and genuinely has a happy relationship. like for once, life is good and things almost make sense for Tim. but then, of course, New-52!Kon comes back. he decides he wants to try again and he finds Tim. only to find well. he's been replaced. and technically, he's been replaced with the *original* that he didn't even know *existed*. and if being a clone is bad enough, that just makes it a hundred times worse. because imagine knowing you're actually the second Kon-El your boyfriend who you never *technically* broke up with fell in love with. that's gotta give you some kind of complex.

so i think it's fun if both Kons try to step back and let the other Kon date Tim. both of them have reasons to feel like the "replacement" or "fake" Kon, and it makes them incredibly awkward with each other. do they count as the same person? bc they definitely don't *feel* like the same person to each other, but with weird timeline stuff, who can really say. them settling on an awkward throuple that's really meant to be Tim just dating them both but somehow they end up dating each other too is so fun for me. they both feel like imposters to the Superboy name but are so deeply in love with Tim Drake, it's the one thing truly connecting them. and then of course, Tim feels bad in that somehow, he's betraying both of them for having feelings for the other. but they make it work, with a lot of awkward angst and miscommunication. i just think it'd be fun. very difficult to write to get all the weird timeline nuances down in a way that's understandable in a fanfic (bc you can't just. infodump like i did on this post) but doable. also difficult to tag, because even though i argue these are two different characters, i'm pretty sure Ao3 groups them under the same character tag. so it'd be difficult to convey it's not *really* as selfcest-y as it would imply. comics, man. DC will never acknowledge New-52!Kon again, and he's admittedly a terrible adaptation of Kon-El, but. i think he was sort of neat in his own right and i'd *love* for DC to just inexplicably bring him back and make the current Kon deal with the consequences of all that. and them make Tim kiss them both. obviously.

As we all know, comics have a fairly messed up timeline. Luckily for me, Tim is also one of the characters who got one of the easiest to follow timeline (so did most of the 90's kid tbh, but he was probably the most consistent one too) so I often use it as the "main" timeline. A reference to understand the rest of DC.

So I'm going to break down how I decided upon Conner dying about a year and 3 months between the time Young Justice was formed and Infinite Crisis.

1. We learn in the first few issues of Robin that Tim turned 15 recently (I'm taking it as "in the week" because otherwise I just can't put everything together but just as a starting point, and you’ll understand later why I’m specifying this later down) and he turns 16 in Robin  #116 which was released the same month as Teen Titans #1.

2. We don't know how many months along Steph was when she found out she was pregnant but what we do know is that she and Tim started dating in the same issue we learned about her pregnancy and that it was released the same month as Young Justice #1. So I tend to play it as her being about 3 months pregnant (maybe 4) when she starts dating Tim. So she gave birth 5 to 6 months after. I tend to use the 5 months mark because she gave birth in issue #65....

3. The biggest problem here is the No Man's Land arc which is supposed to have lasted a year in world and irl (it lasted for the whole year 1999 and a bit of the year 2000 which means from  issues #4 to #17 of Young Justice and from issues 60 to 73) Now for various reasons, No Man's land cannot possibly have lasted a year and not just from Tim's PoV, so I tend to reduce it to lasting about 8-9 months (it's still a fairly long length but it allows for the 103 issues not happening during NM'sL to happen in between Tim's 15th and 16th birthday)

4. At the same time, I can't believe that by issue 17, YJ had already been together for 8 months. Their relationships seems a bit too new for it to be true. So I tend to believe that it lasted until the Olympic Games (it would explain the relative "absence of Tim between Sins of Youth and the OG and the next 6 issues happen in a few days). so issue #3-4 to #24 = 8-9 months (maybe I should say issue #3 to #30 because of what I said earlier). With everything between issue #31 and #34 happening in the same week.

5. I tend to consider the arc Our World at War and Tim's leave from YJ as lasting for about a month in all (they have the time to have their war, be lost, come back and for Tim to leave YJ and come back). Let's note that Robin 101 is part of the World Without Young Justice Storyline. So we have Young Justice #31-#45/6 ~ Robin #74-#101

6. Then the last 10 issues of #YJ seem to be happening pretty fast so I usually reduce it to 2-3 weeks (and I know in YJ they talk in months but overall it's not very practical). I tend to believe Titans/YJ: Graduation day happens a few days later because Kon and Cassie apparently think nothing of their kiss so I'm taking it as them simply not knowing what to do with it.

7. We don't know how long it took between Graduation Day and Teen Titans #1 BUT while they seem to miss each other, they don't seem used to it enough for it to have been really long so I tend to think it's been 2 weeks-a month.

8. Finally, there are like 5 arcs before Infinite Crisis, so I'm taking it as 5 weekends. Then there are the 2-3 weeks Conner was away and the crisis. Which makes an overall lapse of time of about 2-3 months.

9. Now you may wonder, why did you put issue #3 of YJ in NM'sL and what about the previous ones? well technically #3 and #4 go hand in hand so might as well start NM's Land with the arrival of the girls. Now I tend to think Tim, Bart and Kon hung out for 2 weeks-a month before they came.

10. There's another problem in the timeline which is Steph's time as Robin, at some point they said she was trained for a while with Bruce before she doned the official Robin costume. I honestly can't see it as happening for more than a few weeks for various reasons.

Tim, the Birds of Prey and Cass had already done most of the mentoring and Steph is the closest thing the 90's generation of the Batfam has to a genius (yes Steph, not Tim. Genius means at least partially being self-taught, which Tim isn't) and I don't see Steph *waiting* to get them again.

 the guys at the tower don't seem to have really realized Tim was really gone so it can't have lasted more than a few weeks.

other reasons but I really don't want to re-read War Games just to give my argument :p

So what does this give us? 8 months of NML + 2 weeks before NML + 1 week after + 1 month until World Without Young Justice + 2 weeks until the end of YJ

= 9 months + 5 weeks

= 10 months + 1 week : until the end of YJ

Which means that we have to place 100 issues (Robin #1-60 & #102-116 in 2 months time frame). So I admit, I usually cheat. And say Tim turned #15 around issues #10-30 of Robin (basically a bit before the Contagion/Cataclysm arcs) and only said he got his driving license a year in advance because he was pretty much already 15 in his head anyway. (It's something I do, I have about 2-3 months when I pretty much alternate between two ages because I don't care enough to remember which age I am and use the first that comes to mind).

With this, we get one more month to fit those 100 issues (or you can look at it as fitting 70 issues in a 2 months time frame if you want).

Then we add the 3 weeks between Graduation Day and Teen Titans #1 to the 2-3 months

PS: It’s also worth noting this allows for the 1 year later arc to work more or less seeing as Tim had barely turned 16 when it started, meaning he’d be barely 17 when we see him again (1 year is also fairly vague and taking about one month out of it doesn’t change much), so, knowing that there were plans to have Tim turn 18 around the time the preboot started (it would have happened in 2011 or 2012) you can think he was in his last weeks of being 17 at the end of Red Robin and so everything that happenes between 2006-7 and 2011 happens with a year.

Okay, so Tynion just appears to have merged Damian-Batman from Batman #666 future with Titans Tomorrow and their Tim-Batman. Anyone who is more verses in Nightwing and Red Hood mythos knows if their parts in this are also references to some Elseworlds or alternate futures we’ve seen before? I also know there is some alt future in recent Batwoman series and things Future Tim said here hint they might be connected.

Detective Comics #966 really found a way to do this whole character study of Tim in an interesting way. By confronting him with his Titans of Tomorrow self and have them talk. And it’s very interesting, it let’s future Tim lay out his reasons and justify his actions in a compelling manner and he plays out well with present Tim because he is as smart and knows his past self very well, so he is always a step ahead in the conversation. He controls the flow of the events perfectly. Which only makes it that much more poignant when his composure shatters.

Why does it shatter, you might ask? Future Tim told Present Tim to make peace with Conner. Present Tim asked who the hell is Conner (a reminder - New 52 Superboy never took his human name, he was just Kon-El). Future Tim discovered that somebody tampered with the present and Conner, for example, doesn’t exist. Meaning we now have proof something took him away and pretty blatant hint they’re gonna do something about it at some point. Especially when Future Conner was in Titans of Tomorrow story and even had a cameo in this issue and things affecting Present Tim still affect Future Tim meaning this still is the same timeline.

But back to Future Tim, that moment where he realizes he can still change the past...the guy is crying. I think it’s conveying the message of this story very well - Tim could be the most rational choice to become Batman’s successor. But it would also destroy him. Who knows, we might even have a new recurring villain/anti-hero out of it. We know there is Batman of Tomorrow in the upcoming crossover between Super Sons, Superman and Teen Titans - what if it’s actually this Batman still trying to change the past?

YEAH i’m totally down!! I don’t really watch TV though, so this will be a movie rec list! (Also I haven’t watched a lot of movies recently, so a majority of these are from my teenage years)

Movies:

The Fountain (2006): a layered story that interlocks three different timelines/worlds. One takes place during the 16th century where a conquistador is trying to find the Tree of Life in central America, hoping to save Queen Isabella, the second takes place in the 2000s, about a doctor coming to terms with the impending death of his wife, and the third is in the far future, where a lone man is traveling through space with a magic tree. All three timelines star the same two actors, Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz, and the significance of that can be interpreted in multiple ways. The movie doesn’t have a solid Hollywood story, so the ending may feel rather unhappy, but the visual themes, music, and acting are amazing. It may seem like a typical “middle age white man pain” story on the outside, but it’s executed well and I personally really enjoy it.

The Hours (2002): based on a novel of the same name, this movie is another triple-layered story. This story revolves around Virginia Wolfe and her novel Mrs. Dalloway: one timeline follows Wolfe trying to write the novel, the second timeline follows a 50s housewife reading the novel, and the third is a 2000s re-telling of the novel. This movie could very likely be considered slow and is practically made up of all soliloquies, but again, superb acting and an overall very emotional journey. There are quite a lot of gay subthemes, with the modern Mrs. Dalloway character (played by Meryl Streep) in a long-standing and committed relationship with another woman, and there are one-sided feelings in the 50s housewife story (the housewife is played by Juliane Moore). There is a weird, potentially incestuous, kiss between Virginia Wolfe (played by Nicole Kidman) and her sister(?), so warnings for that and also lots of talk of suicide (as per accurate of Wolfe). It’s also unfortunately another all-white cast.

The Tale of Two Sisters (2003): a Korean horror movie about two sisters who return home after an extended stay in a mental institution. Their home suffers under a subtly oppressive and supernatural energy, and there are a lot of mysteries creeping about. Complicated relationships are slowly revealed between the sisters, their father, dead mother, and step mother. This story has a lot of twists, and in its center, I actually think it’s more of a tragedy rather than a true horror. I know the surface level of “psychologically troubled sisters in a horror movie” seems very cringe-worthy, but surprisingly the psychoses are treated as a separate entity from the supernatural elements (even if the lines are a bit ambiguous and blurry, there is still a line). The acting in this is amazing and makes much, much more sense when watched through a second time.

Doubt (2008): the screen adaptation of a stage play, Doubt is a very thematic story revolving around a Catholic boarding school and a molestation allegation. The lead nun (played by Meryl Streep) is suspicious of the main pastor (played by Philip Seymour) because of the close relationship he shares with the first Black child to be integrated to their school. The story is fairly simple, but the amount of psychological tension really drives the story, and the viewer’s prejudices are really put to the test. The actors deliver incredible performances, with an amazing, surprise role from Viola Davis as the child’s mother. The movie really leaves you questioning yourself by the end.

Unleashed (2005): my favorite American Jet Li film, and one of the few US movies that actually takes advantage of his incredible acting skills. This story is about a mentally disabled cage fighter, who is kept like a dog by his gang boss. Through circumstances, he gains his freedom and is saved by a blind pianist (played by Morgan Freeman), who teaches him how to live an ordinary life. Of course, his past comes to haunt him and there’s a lot of action scenes, but the core of the movie is very sweet. I also personally have a soft spot for Asian/Black co-leading actors, and movies that focus on positive relationships between the two groups (which Jet Li has also done in Romeo Must Die but the story in that one is kinda lacking). I think what’s incredible about this movie– as a childhood Jet Li fan– is seeing how his acting and personification of the character translates into the martial arts choreography. For someone who rose to stardom as “the elegant fighter,” Jet Li delivers amazing emotional impact as an unhinged and almost beast-like fighter.

Saving Face (2004): I realize most of my movies are heavy I’m so sorry, so here’s a light-hearted movie to balance things out lmao. Saving Face is a Chinese-American lgbt film, starring Michelle J. Krusiec as a lesbian surgeon. Out to her friends, but closeted to her mother and their general Chinese community, the main character falls into the responsibility of caring for her aging mother– who has mysteriously become pregnant. The mother-daughter duo must learn to live together, reconcile their relationship, and deal with losing face together in the light of their unconventional relationships. While the story is mainly focused on the parental relationship, the main character does have a relationship with another woman that receives significant screentime and development. A feel-good film that does have a lot of bilingual scenes, so watching with subtitles will be needed for non-Mandarin speakers.

Animated Movies:(obviously I’ve seen more animated movies than the ones on this list but I don’t see people talk about these films often so I’m gonna rec them)

Wolf Children (2012): the story of a mother who’s left with raising her two, half-wolf children. The movie follows her meeting a werewolf, falling in love with him, losing him, and raising the kids from infancy to middle-school age. The animation house is the same group that produced The Girl Who Lept Through Time and Summer Wars, so the quality is top-notch. The story, while generally slice-of-life, obviously has some supernatural elements to it due to the kids being werewolves, but is still able to retain the evocative nature of a parental coming-of-age story. There are a lot of themes of love and loss, so it’s not a very feel-good film, but the ending leaves quite the impact on the viewer.

Tokyo Godfathers (2003): a dramedy movie from Satoshi Kon, this film follows the story of three homeless people: a teenage girl and two middle-aged adults, an alcoholic father and a former drag-queen (who now identifies as a trans woman). During the Christmas holiday, the three stumble on an abandoned baby, and more or less decide to find the parents. Their journey takes them across Tokyo, through unbelievable and hilarious circumstances, and also through each of their unresolved pasts and motivations. The animation in this movie is amazing, and the story is light but human enough to strike at your emotions. Hana-san, the trans woman, may come across initially as a caricature, but she is treated with respect and humanity just like the other two characters.
