hii recently decided to seek out a signature scent through perfume samples n was wondering if i could get some reccs! i found that i really like autumn vibes by maison margiela and oud wood by tom ford … but both are way out of my budget. do you have any reccs for similar masculine-ish scents that are woody, warm, and a lil sweet? preferably under £100? thank u in advance love ur blog :)

warm, woody fragrances are my absolute favorite! i'll recommend some good cheaper fragrances to consider to the best of my ability :)

this is peak fall, with a wonderful blend of warm woodsy fragrances but a more sweet marshmallow and pumpkin blend to pull it together. it's got a lot of cinnamon, but i don't think it's too overwhelming to the point of completely taking over the rest of the notes

full dark by solstice scents

solstice scents are a bit more than some other indie fragrances ($90 for a bottle), but i do really stand by their work. full dark is a great darker halloween-y fragrance. it might not be as sweet as you'd like, but there is still some spicy sweetness that adds some more depth. i adore this one a lot, it has a lot of my favorite notes in it!

other solstice scents i would recommend checking out: estate rosewood, farmhouse in fall

amore oudh by oakcha

since you mentioned enjoying oud wood, it might be worth checking out this $45 dupe of it! dupes are sometimes...controversial in the fragrance community, but that's mainly when they're dupes of smaller houses. i think dupes of big, expensive houses like tom ford are fine LOL

amore oudh is a pretty faithful adaption of the same fragrance for much cheaper. it might be a tad more synthetic-y in comparison, but overall it's one of the better dupes you can get out there

oud noir by versace

not as sweet per say, but oud noir is a wonderful darker ambery spice oud-heavy fragrance. it's a classy "masculine" clean smell. its performance isn't perfect, but it is relatively cheap so applying some more throughout the day isn't as much of an issue

marlowe by poesie perfume

i love some coriander with teak wood....this is a really good spicy floral woody fragrance. a good masculine warm smell for the colder months!

poesie's cardigan (sandalwood, cardamom, pimento berries, vanilla, white chocolate, "sweater" musk) is also a good consideration! it's a very cozy and comforting scent that's less spicy but still a good warm, cozy woody scent.

and, lastly, lovesick witchery has a looot to choose from that i think would suit what you're after! i'll just briefly list the top ones i think would work well, but i would recommend taking a peek at their full list of fragrances

seance perfume - lavender, oakmoss, incense, cedarood, sweater musk

spirit perfume - bourbon, tobacco, tonka bean, bay rum, sandalwood

dark bloom - gardenia, pink pepper, amber, black vanilla, datura, jasmine, cacao

erudite's parlor - tobacco, gin, musk

happy hunting!! i had a few more to recommend, but pretty much everything else i can think of is above $100 sadly. if you get the chance, i would highly recommend getting some samples from the scents of wood house! my favorite from them is cedar in acacia which is a delicious woody spicy fragrance

Woody Fragrance Recommendations

So the base I was given was Woody (or Pine-sol which in itself is a VERY unique scent). I took some big creative liberties and started us on some different brands that have different types of woody.

Some quick terminology (used mostly correctly-ish):

Fragrance - what I mean when I talk about cologne, perfume etc

(Scent) Family - You'll hear me refer to Woody as a scent family. This comprises of different notes (ex. cedar, pine, sandalwood)

Notes - in this case, I'm talking about specific scents. A fragrance may have Top notes (what you smell first) mid/heart notes ( what you smell mostly after an hour, and base notes (which really come into play after an hour or so. You can smell them all to a degree when you first spritz something, but the fragrance will evolve over time.

Brand No.1: Replica | Maison Margiela (also @ Sephora)

These scents were created to replicate/evoke memories of fairly universal experiences!

Autumn Vibes - Starts off with a burst of sweetness, but settles into a deep woody note. It's earthy and warm, like hugging a tree.

By the Fireplace - You're hit with smokey notes, and then it becomes a delicious spicy/sweet combo. The sweetness comes from the Vanilla, while the Cloves and Sweet pepper give you that burst of spicy. Real LoA vibes here.

Now it's a bit of choose your own adventure here. Both of these aren't woody, per se, but have woody or wood adjacent notes:

Aromatic, sweet , coffee shop vibes? -> Coffee Break

Leathery, sweet, and a little spicy -> Jazz Club

Brand No.2: Imaginary Authors

Literature inspired scents that are mysterious, broody, and truly unique.

Whispered Myths - This scent is considered sweet, woody and animalic, which is hard to describe other than fur, skin etc. (it's not that gross I promise!) There's also some distinct melon in there.

Cape Heartache - This may be the closest scent to what you requested! It has notes of pine and fir. The light, barely there sweetness comes from fruit (and you guessed it...vanilla).

Memoirs of a Trespasser - another sweet, woody scent, but more of a gourmand (i.e. it's that vanilla!!) If you liked By the fireplace but wanted something a little more sweet and less spicy, try this.

Brand No.3: Boy Smells (also @ Sephora)

A brand that puts a twist on traditional scents. These are VERY unusual and contain a lot of notes that you don't see in a lot of commercial fragrances.

Tantrum - this is woody and GREEN. There's a little bit of citrus in there, but I think the green pepper (aromatic note) really shines here. It's SO different than anything on this list

Hinoki Fantome - deep, woody, smoky, very, VERY earthy. This is what I'd consider a DRY wood. If you like Autumn vibes but wanted something deeper, this may hit the spot

Marble Fruit - If you want something way more floral and fruity but still with woody vibes upon dry down, this is a lovely scent. It also leans into aquatic (my fav). But this is definitely the LEAST woody scent on this list.

Brand No.4: The Harmonist

The love of my life probably. Perfumes based on alchemy. Unfortunately, a bottle is so obnoxiously expensive. Get the scent kit first.

Royal Earth - do you want something creamy, powdery, and woody? This combines everything great about traditional perfume with wood. But it's more floral than woody at first.

Magnetic Wood - this definitely starts out with a kick of citrus and floral but then dies dries down to a lovely sandalwood, cedar base!

Golden Wood - another more citrusy wood, but it leans more into fruity (imo) than the above.

Desired Earth - if you want something herby and fresh, but with some cedar vibes, this is for you. You may like this because it's got similar clean vibes as Pine-sol

Anyway, I hope this helped. I had SO much fun putting these together. It forced me to catalog my collection and revisit some favorites. If you find that you're changing your mind or want to try something else, please let me know. Happy fragrance hunting!

Shadows of The Night Scents

Ok so this is purely my opinion on this very random subject but enjoy what I think Nyx and the vamps from Shadows of the Night by @charlizekkelly would smell like as someone who works in a small cosmetics store. This is purely based on descriptions in the book as well as the vibes I got while reading. Take this with a grain of salt.

Nyx: I feel like Nyx would enjoy the fragrances from Maison Margiela but specifically Autumn Vibes and Jazz Club. However I feel like Not A Perfume from Juliette has a Gun would also suit her.

Orion: Ok so I have two fragrances that I feel would work for him. The first being Ombré Leather by Tom Ford. It’s a very strong fragrance with heavy leather notes that softens as it settles. The second being Wanted from Azzaro it’s a softer woodsy scent with hints of spice

Kotori: Luna Rossa Carbon or Ocean by Prada. I feel like both would suit him. Carbon is a warm woodsy fragrance and Ocean is more of an aquatic spicy scent.

Kade: Personally I feel like Kade has a little bit of a respectful fuck boy energy (i mean this in a good way I swear) and so I think Eros from Versace would suit him. Guilty Black from Gucci is also one that seems like something he would wear

Nico: Niko has that respectful and flirty personality and there are a few scents that would work. I’d say Myslf from YSL or Aqua Di Gio would both suit him.

Also I feel like K from Dolce & Gabbana would work for any of the vamps

Again this is purely my opinion and I’ll post a little review of the book when I get off work. But I hope you enjoyed this.

Autumn and Winter Scents for the Dark Academic

Some of my favourite scents for cooler weather, with a dark academic vibe. All of these perfumes make me think of cozy nights and blustery days. All unisex, at a variety of price points. If you guys like this, I’ll make one for Light Academia scents as well! Details below.

Jazz Club - Maison Martin Margiela

Boozy cocktails in a smoky bar, with a sweetness that ties it all together. MMM calls this a male scent, but it's got enough vanilla that I think it leans really unisex. Great in colder weather, smells perfect on a wooly jumper. My boyfriend likes to borrow this.

Nirvana Amethyst - Elizabeth and James

Floral tobacco with a dash of pencil shavings. This is what your 90s revival poet friend wears. It is elegant and well blended, but the cedar pencil note keeps it from being stuffy.

Étui Noir - Miller Harris

Old leather jacket and smoky incense. Very moody, dark with a strong gothic vibe. Buy this if your favourite colour is black. Spray with caution - it is very strong!

No. 3 Pomegranate - Hotel Collection

Spicy pomegranate and rhubarb. Fruity but not sweet, with plenty of spicy pepper and cloves. Complex, it is the opposite of 'cute'. This is what pumpkin spice wants to be when it growns up. No. 3 is a dupe of Jo Malone's Pomegranate Noir, but sold at Aldi. BARGAIN BUY, people! Even on reseller sites (amazon, ebay) you can normally pick it up for less than £15.

Unfortunately they were out of stock of the parfums de marly athalia, which really piqued my interest. Do you have any recommendations for other scents that feel somber? sadly the perfumed court doesn't always carry all scents from every line, i got my parfum de marly samples directly from the brand's website (they offer a sample kit that then gives you a discount if you want to order a full bottle). for pdm that's what i'd recommend doing!

somber scents... it will depend on the sort of shadows you prefer. guerlain's l'heure bleue is pensive and melancholy, but not yet fully dark. fallen by bpal is the heavy air before a storm. event horizon and anathema (also by bpal) are similarly stormy. the former leans ecclesiastic, the latter floral. deadly nightshade by alkemia is trad goth elegance. autumn vibes by maison martin margiela is a november walk on soggy leaves, on a day without sunlight. zoologist snowy owl is the same, only in midwinter, with the leaves now frozen deep under snow. these are all very different, but all have a somber mood to them in my opinion.

if you want something more in line with athalia's vintage powdery florals, go with l'heure bleue or the earlier entries in the list; the last two are more androgynous, esoteric interpretations.

This autumn, I want a scent that smells like wandering off a trail in the woods and picking up a mossy stone to find bugs scuttering underneath. Something like a cold stream with dead orange leaves floating on top and clean smooth stones underneath. Any ideas? What notes should I look for?
