Both? Can I say both? I do a lot of salt like olives and chips (crisps if you will :P) but I also love chocolate

There are merits to both! There used to be a movie theatre in my former town that played more indie films and also didn’t care if you brought in food (takeout, beer— whatever. It wasn’t that it was allowed they just couldn’t be bothered) and that’s sort of the ideal scenario

Non pas en grattant du beurre et du narcissisme à chaque prise de plume ou de parole - il sait qu’un auteur est voué à faire gagner à sa passion ce qu’il perd en heures de solitude et en cheveux gris. Non, non. Plutôt en les communiquant avec empathie à ses contemporains, à la manière d’une télétransmission amoureuse : n’est rentable que ce qui peut être transmis. Essayiste, rédacteur en chef, enseignant, directeur de collection, chroniqueur et j’en passe, Nicolas Tellop est l’écrivain stéréophonique, celui qui vous fait aimer d’un même battement du cœur Snoopy et Pierre Salvadori, Astro Boy et Kurt Vonnegut, Jr ., Franquin et les courses-poursuites cinématographiques, Highway 61 revisited et Venise. Lien secret mais vivant entre des comités de rédaction et des éditeurs qu’a priori rien ne rapprochait, il trame au sein de la pensée pop-culturelle francophone quelque chose de neuf et d’ancestral en même temps, une chanson de geste composée tout à la fois pour les nonnes, les cow-boys, les savants fous et les enfants.

| Que trouve-t-on comme nouvelles acquisitions dans ​ta bibliothèque ?

Soyons sérieux quelques instants : si ce sont des nouvelles acquisitions, elles ne sont pas encore dans ma bibliothèque. Qui range ses livres dans sa bibliothèque sitôt qu’il les a achetés ? Il existe des gens pervers au point de faire des trucs pareils ? Je préfère l’ignorer. Donc, si la question s’entend en termes de derniers achats, je dirais Let’s talk about love – pourquoi les autres ont-ils si mauvais goût de Carl Wilson, Normal de Warren Ellis et Nymphes de Giorgio Agamben. S’il fallait parler des derniers livres à avoir été lus et à avoir rejoint ma bibliothèque, je dirais La Caverne aux Idées de José Carlos Somoza, Une Année sans Cthulhu de Thierry Smolderen et Alexandre Clérisse et L’Enfer et le Paradis de Charles Asselineau.

| Quels livres marquants a​s-tu découver​​t​s ​ à l'adolescence et que ​tu possèdes toujours ?  

Mon adolescence, c’est une espèce de trou noir. Je ne sais plus ce que je lisais à l’époque. J’étais trop occupé à survivre. En fait, j’étais resté attaché à mes lectures préadolescentes, que je me contentais d’entretenir. Je relisais avec application les mêmes bandes dessinées : Tintin, Blake et Mortimer, Spirou, Astérix et tous les titres qui gravitaient autour des éditions Dupuis… Elles possédaient – que dis-je : elles possèdent – des vertus hautement consolatrices. C’est aussi à cette époque que j’ai découvert Jérôme K. Jérôme Bloche, Théodore Poussin ou encore Soda, des titres qui n’avaient pas complétement rompu avec le monde de l’enfance mais qui possédait un ton plus grave, plus dur. Dans l’enfance, je m’étais aussi plongé dans Jules Verne, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, S.A. Steeman, Pierre Véry, Edgar Allan Poe, Oscar Wilde, Robert Louis Stevenson, Edgar Wallace… J’étais passionné par les énigmes et l’aventure. À ce titre un auteur en appelait souvent un autre. Avant tout ça, j’avais bien sûr commencé par Le Club des Cinq d’Enid Blyton ainsi que sa série des Mystères, en plus de quelques éditions allégées de grands classiques par La Bibliothèque Verte. Mais il n’a pas fallu longtemps aux livres de grands, avec leurs titres mystérieux, pour qu’ils exercent sur moi une fascination à laquelle il ne m’était pas possible de résister. Histoires extraordinaires, Le Fantôme de Canterville, L’Île au trésor, L’Assassin habite au 21, Les Disparus de Saint-Agil… C’était et ce sont encore des sésames incomparables pour pénétrer le monde de l’imaginaire. Rien que le nom d’un auteur suffisait à me transporter ailleurs. Jérôme K. Jérôme, quel nom ! Trois Hommes dans un bateau : quelle merveille…  Ce n’était pas toujours facile à lire parce que j’étais très jeune. Je me souviens avoir eu un mal fou avec Le Tour du monde en 80 Jours. J’étais en CE1 ou en CE2. J’ai dû le recommencer plusieurs fois et cela m’a pris un temps considérable. Au collège, j’ai développé une passion pour Voltaire et le Siècle des Lumières. Je lisais ses contes philosophiques et j’étais mort de rire. Je n’avais donc pas beaucoup d’amis en dehors de mes livres. En tout cas, aujourd’hui, je garde auprès de mon cœur bien plus de Jérôme K. Jérôme que de Voltaire.

| Sans égard pour sa qualité, lequel de tes livres possède la plus grande valeur sentimentale, et pourquoi ?

Le Manuel Géant des Castors Juniors, parce que tout ce qu’il y a d’utile à savoir est là-dedans.

| Lequel de​ te​s livres prêter​ais-​tu à quelqu'un qui te plaît ?  

Aucun. C’est courir le risque que ce quelqu’un-qui-me-plaît ne me le rende pas. Je préfère lui en offrir un. Généralement, ça ne coûte pas cher et ça fait partie des meilleurs cadeaux qui puissent se faire. Après, cette stratégie de séduction a-t-elle jamais fonctionné ailleurs que dans les films ou les romans ? J’ai offert L’Invention de Morel d’Adolfo Bioy Casares à la jeune fille qui n’était pas encore, alors, ma compagne. Ai-je gagné son cœur grâce à ce monument des lettres sud-américaines ? Certainement pas – elle ne l’a toujours pas lu. Un conseil, donc, à tous les néoromantiques : laissez tomber ces techniques fantaisistes inventées par un libraire au bout du rouleau, et entraînez-vous à faire des gâteaux au chocolat.

| Que trouve-t-on comme livres honteux dans ​te​s rayonnages ?  

Aucun, ce sont tous mes copains et ils ne me font pas honte. Bon, par contre, je dois avouer posséder un petit livre d’Alain Finkielkraut, publié par l’École Polytechnique : Philosophie et modernité. Il date du début des années 2000 : il n’était pas encore devenu complétement fou, je crois. En tout cas, ça m’avait intéressé et je l’avais trouvé bien utile. Toujours est-il que, si je le possède encore, il n’a pas le droit d’être dans ma bibliothèque. En plus, il est tout moche – je parle du livre.

| Quels livres a​s​-​t​u hérité de ​te​s proches ?  

Beaucoup de bandes dessinées, les classiques de la francobelge orientés plutôt « gros nez », mais aussi le plus gros de ma collection des Bibliothèque Rose et Verte. Il y a là-dedans des livres merveilleux. Les Trois Jeunes Détectives, de Robert Arthur Jr., alliés à Alfred Hitchcock, me passionnaient. Le Trio de la Tamise de Paul Dorval également : Dave, Ted et Cathy (sans oublier le chien Watson) s’apparentaient parfois à des détectives de l’étrange. Bref, même s’il m’est arrivé d’en compléter la collection, il s’agit de livres qui étaient à la maison avant moi.

| Le livre que ​tu as le plus lu et relu ?  

Ce serait une bande dessinée, sans doute. Il m’arrivait très souvent de les lire plusieurs fois d’affilée. Je n’ai pas tenu les comptes, mais le record doit être détenu par un Tintin, sans doute L’Île Noire, Le Sceptre d’Ottokar ou le diptyque Le Secret de la Licorne – Le Trésor de Rackham le Rouge. Sinon, il y a Le Réel et son double de Clément Rosset, que j’ai usé et que j’use encore. Et sans doute Sucre de Pastèque de Richard Brautigan.

| Le livre qui suscite en ​toi des envies symboliques d'autodafé ?  

Au lycée, j’aurais dit Balzac, parce que je le mettais dans le même sac que les réalistes que je ne supportais pas. Je n’arrivais pas à concevoir qu’un roman puisse avoir d’autre vocation qu’exalter l’imaginaire. Et puis, peut-être à 20 ans, à partir de ma lecture des Illusions Perdues, j’ai dévoré plein de Balzac. Happy end : je me suis rendu compte que c’est du génie pur. Si j’avais tout fichu au feu, comment aurais-je pu prendre conscience de mon erreur ? Je ne livrerais aucun livre à l’autodafé. Du moins, c’est ma réponse politiquement correcte.

| On ​te propose de vivre éternellement dans un roman de ton choix, oui, mais lequel ?  

Pas un roman, mais une bande dessinée : Il y a un sorcier à Champignac, de Franquin. Tout y est tellement beau que ça fait presque mal à lire. La bande dessinée de l’après-guerre incarne les lieux comme aucun autre récit n’est capable de le faire. Il y a là une puissance qui est folle. Dans L’anti-atome, j’essaie d’expliquer ce mystère que détient le monde miniature des cases. La vie y semble possible comme nulle part ailleurs. Sinon, ce serait sans doute un roman qui se passerait dans la campagne anglaise, comme par exemple La Maison près du cimetière de Sheridan Le Fanu.

| Quel est l'incunable que ​tu rêves de posséder, ton Saint Graal bibliophilique ?  

Longtemps, j’aurais répondu Léonard ou les délices d’un bouquiniste de Pierre Véry, mais une récente réédition m’a enfin permis d’assouvir ce souhait.

| Au bout d'une vie de lecture, et s'il n'en restait qu'un ?

1. What song makes you feel better?

It changes kind of day by day but lately it’s been The Last Stand from Sabaton’s album of the same name. (But I also nominate (We Make) Sweden Rock by Hammerfall because the lyrics are incredibly dumb and it always makes me laugh.)

Wood smoke, like a campfire, it makes me very nostalgic. Diptyque makes a good one called Feu de Bois.
