hewwo i am back to do another round of (mostly) answering all the questions of an ask game and this time it is @ink-flavored's science fiction ask game & i'll be doing it for my cyber western, the graves we dug. the thing about tgwd is, worldbuilding scifi is really not my forte; and while i have a lot of nebulous ideas about how the world works, i think this game will force me to Make Some Fucking Decisions about how the world, and specifically Rapture operates.

(actually adding to the list of influences, unintentionally bioshock but only in the sense that the city this takes place in is named rapture LMAO?? i literally didn't think about that until just now)

anyway have a little blurb about what's going on with this wip:

After the "death" of his long-time partner in crime, Dove, on a mission that went tits up, Graves has been laying low. The former bounty hunter has been hopping from saloon to saloon on the outskirts of the city of Rapture, drinking his sorrows and self pity away. His self imposed misery is interrupted when Dove, very much not dead, renters his life, with a warning: their old organization wants him dead and they’re already hot on his trail. But more importantly, the two of them have an overdue rendezvous with destiny; an obligation that Dove won’t let Graves forget. How Dove survived that fateful night is a mystery, and the anger that fuels him is also something to address. But worst of all, the painful flame of what they had before, and the feelings they feel and felt, burns white hot. The friction might be what finally bucks them off the deep end. But Graves has never been able to say no to the sinful magnetism of Dove's green eyes. And unfortunately for him, he won’t start now.

📅 How far in the future is your WIP set? Is it a “near” or “distant” future?

WAAAAY far off future with a lil mix of alt hist to some capacity bc why are we in a western in like X0XX? who knows my guy. everything old is new again, or something like that. i actually don't have any intention of making the time frame or year or anything like that known just because this isn't a hard scifi world and i DON'T feel like figuring that out. on the kinsey scale of hard to soft worldbuilding, tgwd is muuuuuuuch softer than a lot of my other wips. bc science is scawy <3

🌍 What’s the state of the Earth in your WIP? Basically the same? Better or worse? Does it even exist at all?

i think this may be a different planet that is just the equivalent of a planet wide southwest usa vibe about it ODJC. regarding earth, i think it exists just as a shell of itself and humanity migrated away from earth thousands of years ago; to the point that it’s probably more “mythos” or urban legend about what happened to it. i��m sure there’s religions centered around the worship of earth and where the forefathers came from, however for the purposes of tgwd it has very little bearing on the plot itself in any capacity.

💅What’s the state of cosmetic technology in your WIP? Are people getting painless tattoos in 15 minutes, or are they still box-dyeing their hair in the sink?

it’s sort of a mixture. cosmetic augmentations and upgrades are available to those who are extremely wealthy; but the wealth gap disparity tends to be pretty wide once you step outside of Rapture or you go to her seedier locals or saloons. in general along with synthetic upgrades, changing yourself too much tends to be looked down upon since the general population mindset is like a bizarre mixture of 1800s rancher vibes and 21st century HDDHDH. i have to think more about how that operates tbh but tldr. change in the city is more accepted than change in the outskirts. irregardless this doesn't stop some people; graves himself is a trans man and never got top surgery. and then there's uhhhhh dove's entire situation.

🔋What’s the state of energy technology in your WIP? Is solar old news, or still being fought for?

Solar is old news in the sense that the sun of this planet is "dead." i don't know if this actually means that the sun itself has DIED died, but it definitely does mean that there is no sun in the sky. what tgwd does have is an Artificial Moon. its more an artificial heat source that operates similarly to the same way that a sun would operate in a solar system, but because it is Man Made it does not give off as much light or uv rays since that is technicially bad for humanity (skin cancers and that type of shit). everything is low lit and hazy, and the "morning" is when the light of this artificial moon is at its brightest, which is basically the equivalent of a certain amount of times amplified but not nearly as much as a full moon would be. so unfortunately for all, despite the cowboys, there is no high noon lmao. this artificial moon is created and maintained by the government, but due to the more western elements of this wip i don't really go into too much depth about the science and the why Rapture acts like that. it acts like that because i fucking said so at this point LMAO.

energy technology in general though is still highly sought after, people are always looking for the ways that tech can be best optimized for the conditions that humanity is currently living in.

🚗What’s the state of transportation technology in your WIP? Are there hundreds of mass-market spaceships, or are cars still stuck on the ground?

in my mind motorcycles a la tron style are common in the city, as well as like teleportation hubs because it'd be too much clutter to have trains and public transport snaking around the sky. basically you kinda just input your key, choose your destination, and you're on your merry way. some teleportation hubs are seedier than high tech ones, and can be prone to buzzing, but there are some people who can and do take advantages of the glitches in the hubs to gain access to places where they really shouldn't be able to. there are also people who are able to make teleportation hubs on the fly within the midst of a teleportation. i don't know exactly how it works but i've decided that that's something that one of the minor characters in tgwd coffin is able to do.

actually--i think that might be an ability that is created by the bounty hunter organization bc tldr all the agents have special abilities. "warp jumping" as ig it can be called will probbaly take the form of (insert color here when i figure out coffin's palette) light around his hands :D

📱What’s the state of communication technology in your WIP? Do people communicate through their microchipped brains, or is a cell phone still the best way to get a hold of someone?

cellphones are a rare commodity, most phones are still landline and are very rarely used, only by big corporations bc they can afford the wiring into The Network tm. for most people, sending letters is actually the fastest way to get things to other people. there's a specific kind of teleportation hub that you can input letters and packages to (kinda like a post box) that'll essentially either accept your parcel into a 'hub' facility where it's stored until the person goes to another hub to collect it, or it'll beam directly to a private or designated post box to be picked up by the intended (or unintentional) recipient. Hubs are also very well equipped and encrypted and agents that work for Hubs are usually very loyal to their jobs (and they get paid well so don't blame 'em).

this is just continuing my love of mail crusade so i'm gonna go on before i spend more paragraphs detailing the mail system LOL.

🏢What’s the state of architectural technology in your WIP? Are there cities floating in the sky, or are houses still made of bricks and steel?

steel and titanium mostly, as well as titanium steel. carbon fiber is popular as well, though its flexibility is a bit questionable, but its used in a lot of support beams to absorb shock from any sort of earthquakes or explosions and the like. out in the Sticks tm (saloons and the like on the edge of rapture) they're ramshackled things, sort of strung together by what was available nearby. if there's abandonded buildings from The First Settlement (when humans first came to the planet probably like 100-200 years ago?) then they use the remnants of that, if there's preexisting strucutres like mountains or caves sometimes they can be fashioned out of that too.

🧑‍🌾What’s the state of agricultural technology in your WIP? Can any plant be grown to excess anywhere in the galaxy, or are farms still beholden to nature?

bc the general flora/fauna sitaution is akin to SW USA, i'd imagine that whatever kind of crop sitaution they got going on there, they have going on here, with some... probably recognizable but slightly altered forms of the crops that we know and love on earth so basically pumpkins/gourds, corn/maize, and beans are staples of the diet. exotic plants from other planets can be grown in greenhouses deeper within the city but they're both expensive and rare so its not likely that your average joe will eat them (stuff like wheat, rice, other cereals or grains is all like. unheard of basically). hunting is more of the thing i would presume, at least in The Sticks (which is ig what i'm calling the outside of the city of Rapture for now, i need to make like a ramshackled map at some point LOL). so slaughterhouses, butchers, and hunters tend to be very important and make Sort of decent livings i would imagine.

in general, Rapture and all the planetary system its apart of (whatever that may be) have more of a benevolent if distant trade relationship. every entity sort of keeps to themselves and there's not a huge wealth of trade amongst the planets, especially because outside of Rapture the planet (whatever its called) is sort of like the Outback/a wasteland kind of area. So, generally speaking outside of Rapture, there's not much that it can offer other, more advanced planets. this is also what makes it a good place for the EXTENSIVE criminal underbelly and more nefairous sides of society to thrive. the government is a string of puppets and underfunded and under listened to and so they take bribes to keep themselves afloat. the only thing that everyone can agree on with the other planets in the system is the maintaining of the Artifical Moon.

🎭What’s the state of entertainment technology in your WIP? Are hologram TV shows the best way to spend a Friday night, or is it still Netflix and Chill?

in saloons there's usual saloon shit so drinking, fucking, and pool. whatever their equivalent to rodeos and bull riding is a big sport on Rapture, and it is televised. other than that there's a big drug underbelly so a lot of people travel to night clubs within Rapture to get high and stuff. street performers performing various tricks are a common spectacle as well and there's a few tv programs but its not like Thee most popular form of entertainment tbh. operas and plays are also very common (dove used to be an opera singer)

🪖What’s the state of military technology in your WIP? Are armored giant robots fighting wars, or still regular people with guns?

regular people with guns baybee. spaceships (at least on rapture) aren't really as advanced as other planets so most of their ships are for transportation; either for cargo or for people. they would be permanently neutral in any conflict unless they were cut a deal to be a weapons supplier for ground troops, or if they involved any of the other criminal underbellys/the bounty hunters in either being mercs or in using their resources to help out. i didn't touch on the manufacturing question bc even tho i Do need to figure that out for plot i don't have the brain for it atm bc of plot so i skipped over it, but from the little i do know i know that in general criminaurs level of technological prowess can actually far exceed what they have on the planet proper because a lot of them tend to have connections to other planets.

🤷Are there any jobs that seem obsolete, but still exist? Why are they still around?

stable hands! because rodeos are still a big part of Rapture culture, people who work with animals especially mounts are quite a well respected, if sometimes, nepo baby position. opera singers as well!

💵Is currency different in your WIP? Is it all digital, or does physical money still play a role?

i haven't exactly decided if its physical or digital but i'm leaning more towards physical because i like the mixture of old and new tech. like you go to get a package teleported to your grandma across the city, but you gotta count out the dollars and cents and dispense them into the machine or smthn is a nice dichotomy to me. it definitely plays a role as the main orbit of the story is around bounty hunters, who work for money so lol. it's a big deal for the most part.

✊What is the social climate of your setting? Has society progressed towards equality or regressed? Has it stayed mostly the same?

REGRESSED BABY!!!! somehow this is a world where things are futuristic and technologically advanced but some of the attitudes from back in the day still persist. there is definitely stricter gender roles (i won't be getting into it because everyone who's in the story is pretty much an outcast--it may be something i touch on when i get to the shit about mr. androidson or whatever what have you but i have to decide the actual order of events). i think i also may experiment with having the dialogue be a bit rougher (including slurs and whatnot) but that sorta remains to be seen cuz i really gotta flesh out and build out the scene by scene what am i going for energy. answering this is helping though!

😠What’s happening politically in your setting? Are tensions brewing, a cold war threatening to go hot? Has there been peace for generations?

there hasn't really been peace so much as there's been government negligence, which is why the bounty hunters org that the main cast are apart of is allowed to exist :D because of general incompotency and its very little ability for involvement with international conflicts there's been "peace" as in no space-international? (is that the word?) threats and the like, but this doesn't mean its safe or that there isn't violence and the like going on.

🌌Are humans living amongst the stars in your setting? Are they somewhere other than on Earth?

yeah! this wip doesn't take place on earth but i haven't named the planet yet.

well, i assume its probably some ww3 or whatever planet go boom sitaution--tgwd like i said before takes place like thousands of years removed from when people still lived on earth so earth is like mythos to them. so therefore, it kinda doesn't matter as it has no bearing on the actual story itself lol.

everyone who didn't get off planet died probably LOL. i don't think even if people were to try and find earth that it would be viable at all to still live on

nooooot really. there isn't really an intergalactic (THERES THE WORD) organization amongst them, because thousands of years removed and planets have sort of become a giant web and mess of different relations and things of the like. and i'm gonna actually go off the grain and say that the cosmos is still only populated by "humans" -- thousands of years isn't really enough to fully evolve or transmute a species but there have probably been some changes in some small pockets of planets where other humans live. the reason that there isn't any rules is because humanity has kind of come to terms with the fact that they're the only Sentient life in the universe; animals plants flora and fauna may look different in other places and vary in degrees of dangerousness, however, there doesn't seem to be as far as anyone can tell any other sentient species that exists within the galaxy. because of this, its sort of like a free for all where if you can discover it its yours for the taking. Rapture itself isn't REALLY apart of this conversation bc of all the aforementioned shit i mentioned regarding it, but i imagine other planets fight wars over particularly useful planets and resources--Rapture's planet (it'll get a name eventually) stays out of it.

many, and for the same reasons as people abandon settlements here on earth: the quality of life is shit and hostile so they have to leave. i imagine in the early days of people leaving earth because of their limited tech there was limitations on the planets they could reach and they had to make do with what they had, but once they were able to create better they did that and left. i'm sure that said abandon planets are probably hubs of archaeological research but Rapture aint the type of place to fund that shit.

💡Has humanity invented faster-than-light travel? If not, are they working on it? / 🌱Has humanity invented the technology necessary to terraform planets? i imagine some planets have! Rapture hasn't due to a severe case of being wrapped in its own problems and being generally ass backwards LOL. cyrosleep however is a common thing because that was the necessary tech that got earth off planet in the first place. transmuting the Self into an ai/android is actually a huge plot point of tgwd in general so i'd say they're working on it.... to varying degrees of ethicacy lol.

i imagine that space pirates or militia who live off planet are probably a thing and i think there is prejudice against both of them on Rapture specifically. they tend to distrust outsiders in all forms and because they don’t have their own formal militia, having foreign military personally within orbit of them is a bit Sussy Baka energy or whatever tm.

not yet but give it a couple million years! if humans are still around, biology will take its course. tbh i feel like this is the pre-alien period in history; and what i mean is that instead of it being like the “out of africa” thing where humans as a species evolved and came out of africa to populate the rest of the world and due to the environment and other factors we have such a multitude of looks and the like Now, i think how aliens will eventually come to populate the stars in this sense is that humanity has gone out of earth and began making a living for itself on other planets. as time persists and environmental changes take their toll, humans will begin to change and alter between planets and we’ll start seeing species and eventually new races begin to populate the earth. but there hasn’t been enough time for that to happen!

actually, i was really surprised picard laid into him so hard for being late to work. i know it was a tough-love kind of deal bc toughness "speaks" to worf or whatever and it was supposed to seem "nice" because he let worf go on a little field trip afterward but also like. who yells.

i did like that they referenced the klingon prison camp episode. girl i'd still be feeling that one too

clone jesus as a plot is really insane. like, it's already insane that everybody bought into it and GOWRAN of all people was the one to be like "you chumps are getting snowed." but then he's just a CLONE? they grew jesus in a vat somewhere? in a little test tube? and then they crowned him emperor??

no, scratch that, worf threatened to KILL people if they DIDN'T crown him emperor even though he was just going to be a figurehead because this is somehow supposed to fix the amoral klingons who have fallen into decadence. horrific.

side note. s6 has had a LOT of single-character episodes. we had some picard centric eps some worf centric eps a deanna centric ep and a beverly centric ep...when do we get the fucking gang back together? i feel like i never see them all at once anymore. like don't get me wrong i loved beverly's little romp and i feel like this way allows slightly more of the character work i have been craving but the format change is so weird. can we not have a little character work without singling out one character at a time? pretty please?

i am sighing the deepest longest sigh i have ever sighed. my mixed feelings...

ok, to start with, i hate when tng characters show up in ds9. it's like they bring the bad vibes with them. BUT this is the least i've ever hated lwaxana.

i think the version of lwaxana as presented IN THIS EPISODE ONLY is very nearly a likable character. unfortunately, i have context for her

the flirting has actually grown on me. like, when she's doing it harmlessly. y'all know isabela from da2? like that. what i have a problem with is her being so touchy-feely - leaning into peoples space or trying to snuggle up with them or take them by the arm. the flirting IN AND OF ITSELF is actually kind of cute/sweet if you divorce it from the context of a horrifically overbearing mother and a woman who is narcissistic and can't take no for an answer. "i can swim" like ok girl i admit you have game. i just wish she would do less TOUCHING.

i actually think trapping him in an elevator to force him to turn into goop in front of someone else is a VERY clever premise. and at first i really wished it hadn't been with lwaxana but the more i thought about it the more i realized no one else on ds9 would do. in order for it to work it would have to be both someone who is a little pushy/loud/not totally respectful of his private nature AND someone who could offer a similar vulnerability ie taking off the wig. anyone who's too tactful/respectful of odo/a grownup in general like sisko, kira, dax, obrien, etc would simply turn around and leave him be. anyone who's NOT respectful or a grownup in general (i'm thinking specifically of quark, but julian could probably also work for this) doesn't have a metaphorical wig to take off. like, it would have been great ship material for him to be in there with quark or kira (i know about odo/kira bc i got spoiled, i am a little skeptical but VERY intrigued), but neither of them would have had the same vibe. so i am forced to conclude against my will that lwaxana was the right choice after all.

unfortunately a stranger is also easier to tell crazy shit to...and i looooooved learning crazy shit about odo's past, by which i mean i gasped aloud and covered my mouth with both hands in horror. HE SPENT HIS CHILDHOOD IN A LAB EXCEPT HE DIDN'T EVEN HAVE A CHILDHOOD!!! he doesn't EAT. his mouth is an approximation of one, it doesn't actually work!!! lwaxana, do you know then what else must be a nonfunctional approximation? actually, maybe he doesn't even have any of that going on. maybe he's smooth like a ken doll and that's why he keeps expressing disinterest in sex/romance, or because he has disinterest in sex/romance he never bothered to figure out how to replicate a working set of equipment. anyway the point is i know my king is somewhere on the aro and/or ace spectrum i just have to get to know him better to figure out where

in conclusion, yes it had to be lwaxana, NO i'm not happy about it, but i could have been if she was just less touchy. also, side bar, i don't like that she brought up the ferengi rape episode like it was haha funny. girl it wasn't funny to you at the time and it was definitely not funny to ME

in my delusions a route similar to the novel route is what gives us str (not mekakucity actors shh- canon isn't real if it's from mca), meaning Kano has his weird ass traumadumping session with ene and whatnot and ends up having to spill the beans to the rest of the dan INCLUDING shintaro not just shintaro casually vanishing-

anyways so this ends up with the same vibe as novel-route kano and shintaro which is like. i mean. kano literally describes shintaro as looking at him the same way he looked at ayano and that kano "can't win against him" like. 🤨

Yada yada everything w/ clearing eyes, similar fight to mca ish ( i like the idea of marry draining her friends of their life to save their lives it's interesting to me-) and wahoo ayano. hi. she exists now (with ofc haruka and hiyori too-) and obviously everyone's like HOLY SHIT. especially the mekutrio. and ESPECIALLY kano.

Like I imagine Kano has a much harder time wrapping his head around the fact Ayano's back since while the other two just saw her death as suicide, he knew what caused it / all the clearing eyes stuff so he couldn't really accept her death and move on, while the others (obviously heartbroken over it though) were able to accept it and grow, yea?

Well we get those feelings of "holy shit my sister is alive" but also mixed with these feelings of "oh fuck. i (very unfortunately) might have a thing for my sister's crush." and IMMEDITELY backs the fuck off from both of them. He doesn't ignore ayano obviously but he doesn't seek her out, and he just actively avoids shintaro. ayano's concerned but meanwhile shintaro's just kinda like. what the fuck did i do to you???

Anyways dunno how that gets resolved i never thought past just the idea that kano can barely handle these two facts alone (ayano is alive now and he might maybe like shintaro a little bit (ew)) but together? Fuck. He is Not thinking on that he is backing Way the fuck up. Nope. Not his circus not his monkeys (he is actually just the entire circus).

Anyways long story short when Ayano comes back and everything is resolved kano's unresolved grief over her death but also the budding crush he's developing on shintaro hit him with the force of a truck (haha) and he does Not know how to handle that so he just Doesn't

but for ayano i think kano is super close with her and he's constantly trying to go back the same relationship they had where ayano relied so heavily on him, especially bc kano wants to distract himself FROM himself so he wants to focus on how she's doing but ayano isn't gonna do what she did. she realised just how messed up it was putting kano through all that and she feels so responsible. ayano and kano are on this weird YOU CAN COUNT ON ME. He's a rottweiler/lab mix (for now). For historical sake, if you want, we can just say a rottie mix. Labs weren't bred til the 1800s according to a very shallow google search.

Izzy didn't plan on asking Ed to keep him, or keeping him at all actually. Mutt followed him, and probably snuck aboard. We thought it'd be funny if Stede and Olu found him since they probably wouldn't know about the whole "no pets policy" thing Ed has. They bring him to Ed and are like "hey look" and Ed's like "wtf, get him off the ship" but somehow, Mutt runs off, finds Izzy and vavoom or something.

Loving the idea that Ed would be convinced that Mutt is a pure bred killer, which is why he allowed him to stay, only to watch him smother some of the crew with kisses and cuddle every fucking day

Izzy and Ed both are literally perfect for the "dad who said no then became the dog's best friend" thing just thought I'd point that out

The only one who's able to actually ignore the puppy eyes tactic is Buttons. It just feels correct. Izzy and Ed almost can. Almost.

Normally sleeps besides Izzy's bed, since Izzy was the first one he got attached to and kinda the whole point of this AU of sorts, but sometimes he sleeps with the crew or Stede. Izzy won't let him stay with Ed alone quite yet, juuuust in case.

Izzy lets him sleep on the end of his bed, most of the crew lets him sleep curled up with them, and Stede doesn't like to let him sleep in his bed for fear of fleas and dirt and etc etc, but also there's no way in hell that man can say no to puppy eyes (I mean look at s1 Ed)

Izzy (maybe partnered up with Stede) tries to train Mutt well, but unfortunately Frenchie and Roach like to "untrain" him in a way, or train him in ways that aren't so Izzy-approved.

Whilst Stede reads to the crew, Izzy reads/tells stories to Mutt.

It takes a while for Mutt and Ed to warm up to each other but once they do, they're homies. Ed still treats him like he can be a beast but learns not to push anything. "Go fucking kill that crab over there and I'll have Roach make you something real special." "No? Alright fine. No treat for you. Just regular food..maybe a singular treat for your effort."

Lucius turning Mutt into a little model, Wee John and them making him different little clothes to wear for said modelling, and somehow they convince Izzy to sit long enough to be sketched with him once and probably only once. Fang likes to sit and hold him whilst being doodled.

Jim and Mutt having little chats after raids and stuff. "Captain says your a born killer. Same." Mutt can't answer but they know he's listening as much as he can.

That said, Mutt is 100% most of them's personal therapist. He doesn't understand human problems nor has the ability to give them advice, but it's nice to talk about things anyway. My friend is a massive Stede fan so ofc they had to offer up Stede crying but hugging Mutt so it ends up being a good kinda cry. And honestly yeah I dig it.

Izzy's 100% worried that the "no pets policy" is gonna suddenly come back and likes it best when Mutt stays with him bc of it. This is a feel good AU, obviously, but angstwise, Mutt could totally be used against Izzy and the crew.

Fang definitely teared up finding out Mutt was staying, but got attached immediately and 100% wants to help Izzy protect Mutt.

For some reason, Stede gives off "has a pretty bad dog hair allergy, would hug a dog anyway" vibes, so that's something we like to joke about. "Your face is a bit puffy there, Bonnet." "Oh yeah, I'm terribly allergic to canines." "You what?" "I said I'm terribl-" "Get your face out of his fucking fur you absolute twat!"

Mutt likes to roll in mud when on land and some of the crew probably think "why not join him" every single time. Who? Idk. But some of them.

For the most part Mutt is an absolute sweetheart, but Izzy is his dad, and he's a fast learner. 100% acts all vicious whenever Izzy's feeling aggressive (but it's mostly an act and he just kinda idly stands by Izzy like "yeah I'm tough shit too" then goes back to acting like a puppy the moment Izzy shuts up).

hi friend! I saw your post about questioning majoring in creative writing and I feel well equipped to answer it since I just finished creative writing degree LOL!!!!

firstly, I think a lot of ppl (my classmates included) can relate to what you mentioned! all of us have genres we don't like and prefer not to write. I know someone who didn't take any of the poetry classes meanwhile I took any I could get into. basically, a good creative writing program won't force you to write for a genre that you really don't vibe with, at least not more than once. is this something you're aware that this program does, or is it something you are fearing?

Well, the expectation given to me thus far in Fiction 1 is that future fiction classes in general will share the No Genre Allowed rule, aka write only literary fiction. The creative writing program at the university I'm confirmed transferring to (yay! admitted and everything! but no Major affiliation yet) has a required mix of poetry and fiction workshops and I love poetry so I'm happy about that, but I know nothing more about Fiction 2 and above at said uni.

So I'm like. Is it All like this? I'm having trouble figuring out if I'm truly this allergic to literary fiction and just unfortunately find modern settings boring, or if I'm having issues with like the class itself with no sense of direction for the final short story and no feedback so far in part bc the person assigned to do peer feedback for me simply did not. Do it.

So rn I don't know if it's the class or me, and just trying to figure out if I'm cut out for creative writing. Poetry class was awesome! But...

I also just need to really work on hammering out fully original plots and ideas on my own time. I have some og fantasy stuff made as far as novel notes/concepts/scenes, but that doesn't like, help me with a just literary class.

Fanfic has helped a lot with some technical skills but I feel really out of my depth/wondering if I'm legitimately Not Creative. Kind of a mental health/identity crisis lurking there too tbh

hiii so english isn't my first language and i'm learning more about gender and trans stuff and if i might be trans or something (i've been told i sound agender?? but that feels wrong), and something that confuses me, so i'm asking around abt it… "woman" used to simply denote afab, right? like a body type of ppl with a biological (not surgical) vagina & estrogen puberty. like a female dog. ppl say that it reduces women to their genitals, but what about with other animals? like female cat, female horse, etc, just bc we say "oh she's a girl" or "oh i have a male dog" doesn't mean we're saying they're only their genitals in that case, right…? a bitch is just a female dog, that's why it's a misogynistic word. misogyny is based on how ppl see someone without a penis as lesser, bc they don't have the power to forcibly penetrate and feel genital pleasure for it, they can't impregnate, they're "just a hole" etc. like so much of misogyny is just body-specific. the misogyny transfems experience seems terrible but also conditional? bc if they're found out to be amab they're treated as creepy men, so they then stop experiencing misogyny, they just face usually homophobia. meanwhile bio women (and transmascs who don't transition) have no exit door to the misogyny unless they transition and pass perfectly as male or something, and historically that wasn't an option. to me man & woman have always been neutral body types until i came across trans stuff, and i think the idea of gendered brains sounds sexist af. like gender seems like bullshit, i see me being a woman as just like being a female cat, i don't have ~womanly~ vibes in my brain, i was just born female and that's the least important thing about me, but male society made it weird. why should gender continue to be a thing? what does gender actually mean, if sexism was to be eradicated? is it bad if i view my womanhood as just a body type? most cis people i've talked to view their "gender" like this, as just a body type, like any other animal. they don't "feel" like one, they just have the body and aren't dysphoric about it. they might not always like it, but they don't have dysphoria about it, so they just… are. is that transphobic? i've heard mixed thoughts about it from trans ppl & activists, i'm just curious. feel free to ignore this lol ;;

i don't think there's an inherently wrong way for YOU to perceive YOUR OWN gender/body. i think the only time it becomes a problem is when you try to force others to adopt this mindset for their own personal experience as a trans (or even cis) person

as for everything else you asked (though likely in a rhetorical sense) im not sure i have an answer. its very nuanced. gender exists because we as humans like to put names to things and make categories and identify with something, though unfortunately there are a lot of bad actors and misinformation.

maybe it's bc I just got out of the shower and have the Post Shower Motivation Boost but like. sometimes the best things someone can do to improve their day-to-day life isn't like the Big Monumental Lifestyle Changes and "buy this 20-step self help book/guided journal/fancy planner" (not to say I don't have my own fancy planner that I forgot to write in for a month) but more like. little changes/alternatives in daily habits that can help curb bad habits (without necessarily trying to abruptly cut them off) and making the shit you Can't Avoid more bearable where you can

If you have a habit of scrolling social media first thing in the morning and getting mad/upset/overstimulated before you even get out of bed but cutting out the Morning Scroll hasn't worked, or you need your phone on/close by and can't put it across the room to avoid morning scrolling altogether? Get an ebook (I recommend using Libby bc we love supporting public libraries) and put the app icon where your usual Morning Scroll social media usually is. chances are you'll go off of muscle memory and hit the same spot on your phone you usually do for your social media and open your ebook instead. And you'll probably either realize you were gonna get in a morning scroll loop and stop yourself and get started with your day... or you'll read your book and you still satisfy the part of your brain that Wants To Scroll while reading something less overstimulating than just post after post after post on social media

If you have work/schoolwork to do late at night and don't have time/opportunity to just go "fuck it" and do it in the morning? Sometimes it helps to get something comfy and put on music/ambience to help fit a certain Vibe while you work. Lo-fi is one of my go-tos, but putting on a dark/light academia mix with ambient noise like rain/writing sounds playing quietly in the background (this usually involves two youtube tabs) is also one of my usual choices because, while it unfortunately doesn't make my work magically done faster/due later so I can get to bed, it does help to sometimes feel like I'm a Pristine Scholar pursuing Crucial Academic Studies and not a tired college student who just wants to get their paper done and go to sleep

If you have a hard time getting up in the mornings/getting through a morning routine? If you can - if you have a long enough morning routine/a living environment where it's safe/not disruptive to do so - take some of your favorite music, or any kind of music that makes you feel a little happier/less worried or tired, and don't make it your alarm - you'll likely associate it with having to get up and start to dislike it - but make it the music to which you set your morning routine. (Use earbuds if you're worried about waking roommates/family.) It won't make the morning come any later/give you more time to sleep, but in my experience, this made me look forward to getting to carry out my morning routine and thus... look forward more to the mornings themselves

And... yeah. It wont fix everything but sometimes just changing habits here and there can be really helpful

So like I mentioned on the other post this partially came about cuz I read some "Akari isn't fully human/has some sort of prophet/changeling/divine aspect energy" fics and so in the AU she gets properly isekai-ed and while is still mostly human, she's def like human+ or something cuz whatever Arceus did to send her back Mixed Things Up A Bit, but at the beginning it mostly manifests as her having some weird vibes sometimes, staring off into space, saying strange things occasionally, and being ridiculously good with/drawn to pokemon. (Doesn't start getting Freaky until they're in Hisui and the rift happens.)

So yeah she gets touched by the divine and loses her memory and all that, and then gets dumped on Laventon when he's like 24-25 and only just starting his own personal research in Hoenn, and since he can't find anyone who knows Akari(and starts to assume given how she's dressed weird and getting stares and fell out of the sky he's not going to) he's like well guess I'm keeping her and brings her along with him while he travels, which ofc leads to the "congrats, you're a dad now!" found family stuff.

I don't have much of a plot beyond that yet but boy do I have ideas so!!

He ends up buying Akari galarian-style clothes in Slateport(where he arrived and there are merchants from lots of different places) because she can't keep wearing her Weird Future Clothes and figures if she looks like she came from the same place he did they won't attract as much unwanted attention. Unfortunately the only clothes he can find don't fit her super well so for the first year or so with him she's dressed like a bit of a disaster.

Tho because I am a SAP I did want her to have a sweater that kinda matches his that they found because she got attached to him Real Quick and pointed it out when they were shopping. (It is also too big but she loves it and once she grows out of it she is Big Sad)

Akari loving pokemon is absolutely a double edged sword because sure Laventon also likes pokemon and is as happy to ramble about them for hours as she is to listen, but this is also the Past and she's like seven and small children don't mix super well with Dangerous Wild Animals. Ofc she always ends up okay but does give Laventon a severe heart condition.

And he actually ends up being a bit overprotective once they get to Hisui and Akari is old enough to join the survey corps. Which ofc she desperately wants to do more than anything else. Thankfully it doesn't take much for him to see he's being unreasonable and he's absolutely super proud when Akari blasts through the first trial like it's nothing, and super emotional when he sees how happy she is. And maybe he cries a little when she gets to try on her uniform for the first time. And he takes lots of pictures like a dad on their kid's first day of school. Bcs I said so.

Laventon is absolutely weak to Akari's puppy dog eyes(poochyena eyes??) tho. 90% accuracy, high critical hit chance, always super effective.

Akari ends up learning to speak Galarian because when she finds out that he speaks a different language she spends like a week demanding to know the names of everything until Laventon, as much as he thinks it's cute, just Can Not anymore and starts teaching her the alphabet and making little worksheets to distract her so he can get his own work done.

She starts calling him 'papa' pretty quickly and at first he doesn't correct her but still feels bad cuz he's very well aware of the fact that he's Not Her Real Dad, and it doesnt click until like a year after finding her something happens, like she gets really sick or scared idk yet, and she calls him that and he's like "Oh, wait no I'm actually dad now oh man okay" which makes him have a mini crisis before accepting that he's more than okay with it.

Akari still get blamed for the sky turning red thing and exiled, because despite meeting her way earlier in this au Kamado still is picking up on Akari's ~vibes~ and the things about her story that don't add up, but Laventon goes with her because ofc he does. (Also fun angsty bit if we add surveyshipping to the AU I think Cyllene and Laventon would agree that she stays to keep an eye on the village and Rei, while he goes with Akari, which could DEF make Akari feel mad guilty for splitting them up on top of all the Bad Time Feels she's already having.)

Akari does withdraw a lot as she tries to figure out who and what she is and what her place is, but in the end she gets to meet Arecus again and figures it all out(I'm kinda thinking she died in her previous life and got a little Weird when Arceus grabbed her, made her not dead, and dropped her out of the sky but idk for sure yet), at which point she goes home to Jubilife Village and Laventon and Cyllene and everyone because that's where she decides she belongs. (And she probably helps Ingo get home cuz she's not just gonna sit by and accept him being stuck.)

anyway that's what I've got so far and I have absolutely already written a few little scenes out because I am in fact obsessed with this AU!! I just love me some single dad of weird child shenanigans and the potential for feels is off the charts and am always down to talk about it uwu
