A: I think Little's probably one of the most hopeful out of them all, simply because he has clung on to his humanity. I don't have a comics "take" to offer up necessarily--but I want to see a Superman run where Clark Kent is essentially J. Jonah Jameson. Constantly finding reasons to just shit on Superman and belittle all of his efforts. Superman is of course just as heroic as usual, but I want to see him having fun writing a bunch of tabloid bullshit about himself.

He is the single least popular editor the Daily Planet has ever had, but it's the age of clickbait and engagement farming, so he's also the most successful. His most famous editorial rant is the one where he claims that Superman must have destroyed Krypton himself, since it's veeeeeery suspicious that somehow a baby just happened to survive while no one else did. Very suspicious indeed. And all these Kryptonian expats that keep coming to Earth to fight Superman must be looking for revenge for their murdered homeworld. If the forces of Earth would just stand back and let these freedom fighters take the filthy alien off their hands, it would save countless lives. They might even stop trying to conquer Earth. No more precious human lives lost on account of an alien!

(Lois reads this in utter disbelief. "Clark...are you appealing to racism to keep people from getting hurt during your fights?"

"Why not? Nothing else has worked. And the term is super xenophobia.")

Aside from Lois, who hates what Clark is doing but loves the free reign he gives her to investigate any story she wants, and Ma, who doesn't read the paper anyway, the only non-hero who knows what Clark's doing is Lex Luthor. He sussed it out the first time he tried taunting Superman with a Kent editorial and Superman merely floated there looking pleased with himself. It took Lex about three seconds to really look at Kent's byline photo and realize he was Superman all this time! Lex is pissed, of course. How dare this alien take over humanity's free press and use it to spread his false propaganda! Compromised newspapers pushing a biased agenda? That's just unamerican! Lex immediately buys the failing Huffington Post, renames it the Lexington Times, makes himself Editor in Chief, and turns the editorial section into a daily rebuttal of every article Clark Kent posts. Lex's elegant arguments against Kent's "shortsighted xenophobia" and "reckless crusade against Superman" garner national acclaim. LexCorp stock is breaking records daily. And Superman's reputation has never polled so high! Lex isn't exactly pleased with the latter, but when you add the former to the fact that he's finally succeeding in thwarting Superman's schemes, he decides that he's come out ahead anyway. All is right in Lexworld-- no, in Lextopia!

Two weeks later he's named the Grand Marshall of Metropolis's annual Superman Day Parade and he realizes that he might have fucked up. Superman and Lex Luthor are linked so tightly in the public consciousness that not only can he never risk attacking the alien again lest his stock plummet, but shareholders are actually expecting him to support Superman. Overtly! His own board won't shut up about destroying their Kryptonite stockpiles and dismantling the anti-alien missiles. Even worse, they want R&D to start working on anti-Kryptonite armor that will make the damned alien even more powerful! Lex never should have bought the Lexington Times. No! He never should have went public! Worst mistake he ever made. LexCorp should have stayed a family company.

He is, of course, placed right next to Superman during the mayor's Superman Day commencement speech. The entire time he's standing there, a rictus smile on his face, he's muttering "I hate you I hate you I hate you I hate you I hate you" under his breath while he and Superman link arms and wave to the crowd.

Lois gets a great shot of Superman giving a surprised and bright red Lex Luthor a grateful hug, the American flag proudly flying high above their heads.

im writing an au that is supposed to include everyone in the dsmp. but i am a humble enjoyer and dont know about lots of characters, purpled included. can i get a guidebook to writing cpurpled? any tropes to avoid, motivations you see people getting wrong, etc?

okay so. purpled is Interesting bc there's a lot of depth to his character in the sense that he himself is not self-aware of his own actions/wants, making for there being three purpleds: the purpled that he shows to others, the purpled he feels he is, and the true purpled he himself isn't even fully aware of. and depending on how deep you wanna explore into his character, that third one likely won't even come into play, because that is more of an instance of a character study/purpled-centric piece, but i'll go over it anyways, just in case! splitting this into parts below the cut to make categorizing things a bit easier :]

first, the basics:

purpled has a very. unique way of talking. in serious moments, he's calm, collected, and intimidating, and will act like you'd expect a broody teenaged mercenary to. most of the time, though, his speech pattern is the world's most ungodly mixture of teenage boy and starving victorian orphan.

in fight or flight, he chooses fight 100% of the time, even if that fight is not immediate.

purpled only cares about a handful of things: self-preservation, his image, and money. this doesn't necessarily mean he won't do "good" things, just that his motives are less about saving people and more about advancing his own agenda. during the red banquet, for example, he only saved the attendants because he was paid to. eret called him a hero for it, but it was nothing more than a matter of who paid more. his morals are extremely skewed,

but he's not inherently malicious. he's indifferent. his actions are logical, not emotional, so despite harming others for his own gain, he typically holds no ill-will towards them. for example, the wiki cites that he and bad have a negative relationship for betraying the eggpire during the banquet, but in reality, purpled really doesn't see bad in anything but a neutral way. there are very few people he holds either positive or negative emotions towards, as his default state is indifferent, but willing to go along with the other person's emotions if they pay enough.

the only people he does feel a semblance of strong emotions towards are: hannah, boomer, ponk, tubbo, jack, and quackity. he has positive personal relationships with hannah, boomer, ponk, and tubbo, seeing them as genuine friends. additionally, ponk, tubbo, and jack are fellow businessmen, which he very much admires. quackity, of course, is the one person on the list he has overtly negative feelings towards, something that possibly extended towards slime after the ln finale, as well. he has an Odd relationship with tommy in the sense that they're somewhat rivals, but not in the usual fandom sense where "oh they secretly care about each other because they're sworn rivals". purpled would sell tommy to satan for a single cornchip and not even blink. there's also dogchamp, his dog, which is i think the one True attachment he's ever had on the server.

business is very important to him! purpled only really cares to talk to people who he sees on a similar intellectual level as him, and business is the closest way to his heart, as seen with his relationship with ponk.

anyone he doesn't see on his level is "lesser". this is specifically highlighted with his viewpoint on slime, as he sees slime as nothing but a child who can't fend for himself and has to rely on quackity for everything. this viewpoint is, obviously, extremely untrue, because purpled is an unreliable narrator in every sense of the word.

he's very smart and extremely capable. if he sets his mind to something, he Will accomplish it through any means necessary, even at the cost of others.

he is also. just sillie. at least around those he trusts or is pretending to allow to get close to him (like fundy in ln). he pulls stupid pranks for stupid prizes. he's just a boy that really loves his dog. he's the server's strongest warrior yet he runs screaming from boomer because they threatened to child-leash him. do not be afraid to make him a freak (because trust me he Is one)

some deeper stuff! all of these things are unspoken, and things he himself is not aware of. a dive into his subconscious thoughts, if you will. if you're writing something deeper with him, these are things i recommend alluding towards/highlighting, but in a sense that only the audience is aware of. they're not things that should be Explicitly Stated, at least not by him/his pov. purpled has little to no true self-awareness, and when he does have moments of introspection, he Still manages to fuck that up, which i'll be getting into

purpled does not really feel any negative emotions other than rage and spite. or, more accurately, he doesn't let himself feel anything other than rage or spite. when lamenting about his loneliness on the server, he immediately spins it into a revenge plot, believing it'll be solved as soon as he gets his just desserts. he does feel and process positive emotions, it's just negative ones he pushes aside for the sake of anger.

this is because, inherently, purpled does not believe he is in the wrong. ever. everything is always the fault of others, which is why he results to anger, because that's what happens when he pushes blame onto other people. he doesn't ever accept that his actions can be detrimental to himself, and that his issues are always the fault of others. for example, he believes that the reason his legacy on the server was "ruined" was because of quackity's intervention. while quackity's destruction of his ufo certainly didn't help, purpled's core issue was himself. his own self-isolation is what started the downfall of his legacy, and his continued isolation is what sealed its fate.

his inability to process his true emotions/wants makes him very prone to self-sabotage, although he believes the path he chooses is the right one. due to quackity's intervention, he believes that he wants a legacy to have power and to be remembered. when he laid out his issues, however, his biggest hang-up was that "if he asked people on the server to name three things about him, none of them could". deep down, what he wanted was a sense of connection, of building a legacy through the bonds formed with others, but he was unable to realize that.

he's so fucking stupid. all of this is me trying to say he's a fucking idiot. he has the emotional capacity of a pet rock with angry eyebrows drawn onto it. he's hypocritical and not even aware of it. i don't think he has the emotional ability to know what hypocrisy is.

the most important thing, though, is to not woobify him into the "manipulated minors" trope. purpled was not manipulated, and although his age plays into the tragedy of his character on a meta-level, it has no true importance to his actions/story. and although i gush about him a lot, and there are reasons to why he acts the way he does, he is not a good person. i can explain why he does what he does all i want, but at his core he is flawed and antagonistic. that's what makes him so good!! he is not a good person, he knows he's not a good person, and unless he's purposefully playing that role in order to deceive someone, he doesn't pretend to be one, and is up-front with others about that fact.

Almost snarling wasn’t snarling. And ‘almost’ only counted in Horseshoes and hand grenades. So he would count it as a win.

It was.. really unfortunate he didn’t have a change of clothes. Some part of his skin bristled putting the same wrinkled clothes from earlier back on. He never realized how many sets of clothes he went through.

Buttoning up the work shirt, he brushed his hands down it. Trying to at least smooth out some wrinkles. And it did nothing at all. There was no way this place had a dry cleaner.

Vox didn’t wait, so he didn’t hear Alastor’s second comment. Or see the other enter the room with the towel on his waist.

The door of the room closed and locked gently as Vox left.

It was almost half an hour before he returned. His hair was very fluffy and wouldn’t stay out of his eyes now that it had dried forward.

He came back in and closed the door behind him with a big sigh.

“Alright. We have food things enroute. It took some convincing.. he kept wanting me to use something called uber eats. But I’m trying to not use this card. Plus that’s a stupid fucking name. Also if you were curious.. they don’t have a dry cleaner.” He muttered the last part like it was a serious set back for him.

He cared a lot about how he looked. Looking a certain way was step one of any grift. The only reason this whole thing took as long as it did is because he looked like a dressed up trucker just crawled out of a lake.

It was still barely early evening though. They had all night to get the food and beat Alastor in beer pong again.

Oh so that’s how it would be. Oh he could work with that.

There was almost a physical lightbulb that went off above Vox’s head. His whole demeanor changing as he seemed to finally understand the rules of their human ‘on a mission’ dynamic.

The huge smile was back. Shit eating grin and without the angled shark teeth the shape looked almost out of place.

It was a light shove, so he ignored it. Even if it hadn’t been he might have ignored it.

“I like when you blush for me~” he added mercilessly. He took another kiss keeping the other’s jaw trapped in his firm grip. Then bit at Alastor’s bottom lip hard enough to leave a mark and in this case, draw a little blood.

“Oh there’s your blood~ enjoy that~” he teased. Finally letting go and giving the other’s ass a tight squeeze as he moved to step out of the shower.

There was plenty of staff, and he had some cash left but he wasn’t going to blow it on wait staff that should do what he said anyway.

They would get his food regardless.

Vox shook his head around briefly as he was free of the shower, just to stop his hair from dripping in his eyes. His skin sort of all over his body was still blotchy and pink, just agitated by the heat of the water from earlier. But it was settling slowly.

“Hurry up in here. And I know it won’t take long- you have no products.” He added leaning on the impatience he exhibited all the time, just so the other would know he was not free to wither in peace.

He picked up the rest of the cigarette and wandered into the hotel room naked.

i feel like almost everything in utena has sort of already been extensively discussed in the last two (almost three) decades of utena's existence (not that there aren't new interpretations to be made, there always are) besides black rose arc (mikage+mamiya+tokiko). which is why they're so much fun to think about. i think the need to read between the lines makes it unfortunately easy to misunderstand or look past obvious stuff if you don't pay attention, but to me it's always been really obvious that mikage's arc is a literal representation of the erasure of queerness in ohtori (society?) by akio/everything he represents. and that's so fucking tragic! nemuro was never able to find a name for his desires. he lived and died as a puppet in the shadows.

Hearing some thoughts on Rin's lines about Clear Wing.

I don't disagree that it feels off-putting or wrong (whichever you prefer to describe it as), but I imagine her reasoning doesn't necessarily boil down to seeing herself as above Yuugo (though it's very possible it partially is; they both lived in a dog eat dog world - the City - and they're commons to boot - so they're fighting one another to duel Jack up until she's kidnapped, even if Yuugo says they were going to do it together), as much as it boils down to her being the responsible one.

Yuugo really isn't, so it might possibly be that, given how dependable of a monster Clear Wing (and Crystal Wing) are, Rin thinks her burn deck is a better fit for such a monster than Yuugo's luck based deck. The answer to this is obviously no as soon as anything to do with Zarc or Ray comes into the picture (Clear Wing and Yuugo are both cut from the same quarter of the Supreme King Dragon, even if it was by En Winds.)

Or, Rin is probably jealous she doesn't have effect negation in her monsters, and is bullying Yuugo about it because she's seemingly never really dealt with her frustrations in any other way (because Yuugo's always there.) Or maybe because Clear Wing is a unique card and Rin wants a copy too.

Alternatively, this is somehow the same thing as Yuuri's sadistic streak; a hold over from their Original self, and Ray decided Clear Wing should've been one of her monsters. As if Zarc would lose one of his dragons without a fight, though.

(Additional note I think is important but couldn't figure out where to put it in; Rin's defeat line in the overworld implies to me that Yuugo expects her to win her matches, like it shouldn't be hard for her. Yuugo's never gotten angry at her even if she's gotten angry at him multiple times and she's probably afraid of what he'd think - either this hasn't happened and she's worried all his frustrations with her would ungracefully tumble out, only putting up with her because she wins and can get food on their table even if we know that wouldn't happen - he loves her so much he'll ramble about her to anyone given half a chance, or it has happened before and Rin doesn't want to experience that sort of thing again, as though it would embarrass her.) (So her self esteem is either rock bottom when it comes to losing. or she's got too much pride to admit any of her losses to the one person who adores her)
