do we know the writing order for the songs off evermore?? i feel like taylor hasn’t ever really discussed the bts of that album a lot :(

taylor hasn’t (i mean she has a little, but kinda skattered all over), but aaron has! so we know some things (this is all mostly taken from these three interviews, if you want sourcing on something specific lmk)

dorothea was the first song, with closure following soon after. both of them were written “around folklore” but “after [it] came out”, so i’d guess sometime in mid july

in “late july” aaron sends the instrumental for willow over to taylor, and it kicks of another round of writing between the two of them (here's a full interview about the making of willow, but fair warning, it is extremely inside baseball)

no body no crime was confirmed to have been written remotely, sometime after aaron visited her in rhode island in early august and gave her a rubber guitar, but before she goes to lpss in mid september.

tis the damn season was explicitly written at long pond, on the second day of filming for folklore lpss (september 17)

champagne problems, gold rush, tolerate it, no body no crime, ivy, long story short, marjorie, evermore, and it’s time to go were all recorded at long pond studios, meaning taylor recorded them sometime between september 16-26, when she was there filming for the folklore lpss

sometime in early october, taylor leaves easter eggs for tolerate it and ivy in her interview with paul mccartney for rolling stone, confirming they were written by this time

coney island and cowboy like me were likely written in october/november, because they were recorded at marcus mumfords home studio in england (they also added joe playing the piano on evermore here). she does an interview from the studio for gma on november 25

right where you left me and happiness were the last two songs (happiness being The last), written one week before the album came out (this is extremely abnormal and insane of everyone involved)

Prologue

To put it plainly, we just couldn’t stop writing songs. To try and put it more poetically, it feels like we were standing on the edge of the folklorian woods and had a choice: to turn and go back or to travel further into the forest of this music. We chose to wander deeper in and my collaborators and I are proud to announce that my 9th studio album and folklore’s sister record is here. It’s called evermore.

I’ve never done this before. In the past I’ve always treated albums as onе-off eras and moved onto planning the nеxt one as soon as an album was released. There was something different with folklore. In making it, I felt less like I was departing and more like I was returning. I loved the escapism I found in these imaginary/not imaginary tales. I loved the ways you welcomed the dreamscapes and tragedies and epic tales of love lost and found. So I just kept writing them. And I loved creating these songs with Aaron Dessner, Jack Antonoff, WB, and Justin Vernon. We’ve also welcomed some new (and longtime) friends to our musical kitchen table this time around…

Before I knew it there were 17 tales, some of which are mirrored or intersecting with one another. The one about two young con artists who fall in love while hanging out at fancy resorts trying to score rich romantic beneficiaries. The one where longtime college sweethearts had very different plans for the same night, one to end it and one who brought a ring. Dorothea, the girl who left her small town to chase down Hollywood dreams – and what happens when she comes back for the holidays and rediscovers an old flame. The ‘unhappily ever after’ anthology of marriages gone bad that includes infidelity, ambivalent toleration, and even murder. The most righteous motive, to avenge the fallen. The realization that maybe the only path to healing is to wish happiness on the one who took it away from you. One starring my grandmother, Marjorie, who still visits me sometimes…if only in my dreams.

I wanted to surprise you with this the week of my 31st birthday. You’ve all been so caring, supportive and thoughtful on my birthdays and so this time I wanted to give you something! I also know this holiday season will be a lonely one for most of us and if there are any of you out there who turn to music to cope with missing loved ones the way I do, this is for you.

I have no idea what will come next. I have no idea about a lot of things these days and so I’ve clung to the one thing that keeps me connected to you all. That thing always has and always will be music.

And may it continue, evermore.

The Eras Tour fun fact: evermore is the 6th album to be completely performed at The Eras Tour. 1989 (Taylor's Version), Speak Now (Taylor's Version), Midnights, folklore and Taylor Swift (debut) also have been completely performed. 'tis the damn season and tolerate it were on the setlist until March 2024 shows, while willow, marjorie and champagne problems remain on the setlist. no body, no crime was performed with HAIM on the nights they supported the show. willow is... october. november maybe. it’s autumn it’s bending in the wind but it’s also crisp, sharp like the cold water of a stream.

champagne problems is november, it’s thanksgiving and the very beginning of december. the first snow of the year falling on the train tracks.

gold rush is september. it’s walks on the beach under the cool sun of early autumn. it’s cold enough for a sweater but still warm enough to walk barefoot on wooden floors.

ttds is the thick of december, a hard freeze, crunchy snow that stops traffic and shivering under an old quilt that could never quite warm you up.

tolerate it is february, long dismal bitter february when all the neighbors have left town for warmer weather and it feels like your house is the only one still inhabited.

nbnc is the decay of late december, quiet backwoods interrupted by tramping boots and the sound of a motorboat on the lake.

happiness is the same dismal february, a suitcase packed slowly and set by the front door. it’s the tree with a heart carved around two names, standing bare and dying in the backyard.

dorothea is mid december, just before the unexpected hard freeze hits. the sun is shining through the branches of the half-naked trees as a queue forms outside the tiny movie theater in town.

coney island is december 15th. the day is gray and bleak and you sit on a bench with a cocoa that’s grown cold. half a birthday cake sits forgotten in the freezer.

ivy is frost-covered january, icicles that grow on the eaves of a stone house and a fireplace seen through the window. it’s pawing away at the snow in the garden and finding the herbs still surviving underneath.

cowboy like me is december, lush green and gold. glitter and light in a holiday resort but quiet shivering in the dark empty courtyard beyond the ballroom’s glass doors.

long story short is the 28th of september. it’s a day of bright clear sunlight and a sharp wind that makes the aspen trees quiver.

marjorie is november, amber skies and flickering front porch lights and walking through the city in the brisk air. but it’s also november, 20 years ago, moonlit swims and cream soda in the car with the windows down on the highway.

closure isn’t as well-defined — it’s more of a sharp abstraction vaguely resembling february.

evermore is, well, gray november and december. it’s walks in the forest with wet leaves underfoot and it’s deep dark water under a gloomy sky.

rwylm is the end of december, dark setting in at 5pm and the year turning to dust under your fingertips.

ittg is a cloudless day in the first week of either january or march, cold air sweeping through open windows and filling your lungs. it’s a moment of brilliant, liberating clarity.

now, let’s discuss one of my top three taylor albums of all time:

Van Hohenheim

- taylor said that folklore is an album of confessions while evermore is an album of endings, and while i think that's a good description of the two im gonna argue that evermore is actually a love album about heartbreak, which is why it's MY favorite album.

- each song is full of love to another but there's always something that is standing in the way to let it either be explored or it having already ended. good examples are in songs like ivy, tis the damn season, champagne problems, no body no crime, gold rush, happiness, marjorie, and so on. every song tells us how the narrator has a person they loved, either romantic or platonically, but they can't be with that person for one reason or another. something has stopped it, maybe it's even them and their own issues getting in the way of maybe it's a person physically standing in the way, either way something is stopping this love and it's breaking the narrator.

- this idea can be linked to several FMA characters, but i think hohenheim best fits it. this is a man who was born a slave and learned to read and slowly gained his freedom through his friend only to have said friend turn around and use him to become immortal. which ends up not only making hohenheim immortal but also killing his entire civilization. he is then forced to live with the many people of xerses inside him who lost their lives while he tries to grapple with his own reality.

- over time, he meets everyone inside him and tries to give them everything they want or need to make up for it while also still honoring them. but then, hohenheim meets and falls in love with trisha elric. he doesn't even fully see himself as a person, yet here he is falling for a woman who by all accounts is perfect (as told exclusively through ed, al, and hohenheims persepective). he doesn't think he's worthy of love or can have children, not wanting to spread his curse onto others and fearing he may have already done so. he then had to leave his home to go and try to help save amestris because his old pal is trying to destroy it, meaning he has to abandon his family, one that he said in the past he'd like to have, to save everyone. which only ends up making his sons lives more complicated.

- hohenheim is on the constant end heartbreak and love, almost mourning it before it begins. and him specifically leaving to go and try and save amestris is somewhat reminiscent of tis the damn season as in that song the narrator, dorthoea, leaves home to chase their dreams but leaves the love of their life and neither is ever able to move on from the other.

- i ran out of other ways to describe it because i'm kinda tipsy, but DO YOU GET WHAT IM SAYING???? LIKE DO YOU SEE THE PARALLELS BETWEEN THE TWO???

- i'm going to end this here cause i'm afraid this means that dorothea is now about hohenheim and that's just a funny thought to me

- anyway i'd like to dedicate this section to my beloved mutual alex (@roberrtphilip) cause if it wasn't for him sexualizing that old man i would've never put two and two together. so congrats buddy, you get the prestigious honor of having your favorite character be my favorite taylor swift album AND heavily connected to my favorite song of all time, tis the damn season. i cannot honor someone more than this. so thank you for your service 🫡

Cecily(1469 - 1529). Queen of Scots. Wife of James IV, mother of 4 children: Marjorie, Anabella, Sibylla, Robert IV. The married life of the royal couple was not a happy one. Because of Jacob's constant infidelities, the couple became more and more distant from each other. The queen tried to influence the king's policy, but her attempts were unsuccessful.

Edward V(1470 - 1537). King of England. Husband of Isabella of Aragon. Edward's domestic and foreign policies were not successful. During his reign, nepotism and treasury increased in England, and he intervened in military conflicts of other countries. Isabella and Edward had a cool relationship. The marriage produced 5 children: Jacquetta, William IV, Isabella, Thomas and Henry.

Margaret(1472 - 1530). Queen of Portugal. Wife of Manuel I. Margaret had an indomitable character and great willpower. She was religious, donated money for the construction of monasteries and schools. In marriage with Manuel Margaret gave birth to 12 children: Fernando II, Beatriza, Elizabeth, Afonso, Isabella, Sebastian, Luis, Blanca, Dinish, Mary, Constanza, Duarte.

This is a bracket to determine which of the many memorable NPCs from across the Professor Layton games are the greatest.

GAMES INCLUDED: Every game except LBMR. Eternal Diva characters are also not included here.

WHAT COUNTS AS AN NPC?: Anyone who doesn't have a puzzle animation. Characters excluded are Layton, Luke, Flora, Clive, Emmy, Randall, Aurora, Des, Espella, Phoenix, Maya, Katrielle, Ernest, Sherl, Hastings, and Emiliana.

WILL THERE BE NOMINATIONS?: Nope! Every NPC will be included.

WHAT ABOUT THE LAYTONMOBILE/MOLENTARY EXPRESS?: No vehicles. Not characters.

WHAT ABOUT THE PUZZLE LADS/LASSES?: I only plan on including characters that we can speak to in-game, so no Puzzle Lads or Lasses. Sorry to the people who like them 😔

WHICH CHARACTERS ARE INCLUDED, THEN?: Anyone who isn't an exception listed above that is in the profiles of the game! A full list is enclosed below.

WHEN WILL THE TOURNAMENT START?: More information forthcoming on that! I have to seed the bracket first :)

WHY IS NAIYA YOUR ICON?: In my opinion, she's one of the more underrated NPCs of the series. I'll probably cycle through some of the ones I have available to me right now.

WHAT CRITERIA SHOULD I VOTE ON?: Whatever makes you happy :)

ARE ALTER EGOS SEPERATE CHARACTERS?: No. For instance, Ratman is not included because his secret identity is in the tournament.

US OR UK NAMES?: I will try to make available as many names for the NPCs as possible! Which includes their Japanese names and as many names in the localizations as I am able to obtain from the wiki and my own sources. I'll probably reliably have the English (both versions where applicable), Japanese, and French names for every character when I do the bracket rounds. The list below however is entirely in English.

Day 9 of The Tortured Poets Department countdown which means we are headed back to the woods for Evermore

Just when we thought Taylor couldn’t shock us anymore, she releases yet another surprise album, all within the same year. Folklore’s sister album continues the whimsical and ethereal storytelling of folklore but while still having its own unique feel and identity; it’s the winter to folklore’s summer. It also continued the amazing collaborative work of Taylor with Aaron Dessner, making it clear he was here to stay. This album also led to some of the most anticipated fan moments during The Eras Tour, screaming the bridge of Champagne Problems and shining the lights for Marjorie. Although it is referred to as the ‘forgotten album’ by some, it has proven to be yet another piece of Taylor’s discography which has cemented her as the legendary artist and songwriter she is and will always be known as, forever and evermore.

The Taylor Swift Song Tournament: Dorothea vs. Cowboy Like Me

A new matchup in the first round of the Evermore songs. This time it's Dorothea against Cowboy Like Me. Two really great songs, even though they sound quite different.

My sweet soft boy deserves the world and evermore is there for him. You cannot tell me DJ does not want justice for evermore. He demands it. DJ no doubt cried listening to evermore and I think he would want to honor that and represent at the eras tour. I’m sorry, but he is the male equivalent of dorothea. He cried to marjorie and tolerate it. Give DJ and evermore the moment they deserve.

DJ would want to be comfy and really give the soft, woodsy vibes. I mean, DJ would sit down and think what would I be deep in the forest, the colors, the vibe. I think he’d look great in the browns and the sweaters. I also think if he wanted to get a bit more concrete with his outfit as it relates to TayTay, he might go for something like from the willow music video.

2. Why their name was chosen: Thea’s beloved paternal grandmother’s middle name is Dorothea, and Robert wanted to honor his mother. It just so helped that Marjorie loved the name, and wanted to honor Ginny as well

4. Their biggest fear: Thea’s biggest fear is that her eating disorder will come back and destroy her physically and mentally (which it very nearly did in s2)

5. One turn-on of theirs: Proper etiquette (don’t ask her why, but seeing Finn act like a total gentleman at a family dinner at her house REALLY got her going)

6. Their go-to sleepover activities: Painting everyone’s nails and drinking hot chocolate while watching old movies

7. What candle they’d get at Bath & Body Works: Definitely the Vanilla Bean candles (always a classic like Thea)

A moment where they reached their breaking point: You would think it would be seeing Finn and Quinn cheating, but no, it was actually when she broke up with her jerk of an ex because she found out he was cheating on her. It was at that moment that the gears started shifting in Thea’s mind that she will never be enough for somebody, causing her eating disorder to come back full force

9. Whether they’re organized or slobby: This is the girl who has the most beautiful handwriting known to mankind AND who is the best tutor at McKinley. Of course she’s organized!
