Her thumb traced soft circles against your back, her smirk softening into something fonder. “Solo importas tú.”

Your resolve crumbled immediately. She knew it, too, because she took the opportunity to flip you onto the couch, settling between your legs, her weight pressing you down just enough to make you breathless.

“Alexia,” you warned, but your hands were already threading through her hair.

Her lips brushed your jaw, her smirk returning. “Dime lo otra vez.”

You swallowed hard, your body betraying you as warmth pooled low in your stomach.

She chuckled, her mouth moving lower. “Eso pensé.”

Your breath hitched as Alexia’s lips ghosted over your throat, her weight keeping you pinned beneath her. She was smug about it too -you could feel it in the way she smiled against your skin, in the teasing drag of her fingers down your ribs.

Your fingers tightened in her hair, tugging just enough to make her look at you. Her eyes were still burning with that same intensity, the one from the ad, the one that had you storming out here in the first place.

“This isn’t fair,” you huffed, but you still pulled her closer, your legs wrapping around her waist and squeezing tightly.

Her smirk softened, the sharp edges giving way to something more affectionate. “¿No?”

You shook your head. “No.”

She dipped down, brushing her nose against yours. “Entonces…¿qué quieres?”

You exhaled sharply. She knew exactly what you wanted. She just wanted to hear you say it.

“You,” you admitted, voice barely above a whisper.

Her lips barely grazed yours. “Siempre soy tuya.”

And then she kissed you -slow, deep, like she had all the time in the world. Like she wanted to erase any trace of jealousy or frustration you had over that stupid ad and remind you that, at the end of the day, she was yours. Your hands slid under her shirt, tracing the toned muscles that had driven you insane just moments ago. She shivered under your touch, her breath hitching as she melted further into you.

You grinned, dragging your nails lightly down her back just to hear the quiet gasp she let out. “Mmm, maybe I shouldn’t be so mad after all,” you murmured against her lips.

Alexia chuckled, kissing you again, her body pressing you deeper into the couch. “Sabía que te gustaría.”

You huffed out a laugh, even as she kissed you again, stealing the breath right from your lungs. “That’s not the point, baby.”

Alexia hummed, clearly not paying attention, her hands slipping beneath your shirt, fingers pressing into the warm skin of your waist.

“Alexia,” you tried again, dragging her name out in warning.

She pulled back just enough to look at you, her expression frustratingly innocent. “Sí, amor?”

You narrowed your eyes, ignoring the way your stomach flipped at the pet name. “You let the entire world see you like that before me.”

Her lips twitched. “Eres mi esposa. You see me every day.”

“That’s not the same!”

She arched a brow, a knowing glint in her eyes. “¿No?”

You groaned -because of course she was right- dropping your head back against the couch. “I hate you.”

Alexia laughed as she leaned down, pressing a slow, lingering kiss to your throat. “No, you don’t.”

You sighed, tilting your head slightly to give her better access. “No, I don’t,” you admitted, your fingers tangling in her hair again. “But I do hate that now half the world wants you, and I can’t even fight them all off because they’re right.”

Alexia pulled back just enough to smirk at you. “You think I look good?”

You deadpanned. “Are you stupid?

Her smirk widened, and she pressed another kiss to the corner of your mouth. “Di lo otra vez.”

You refused to give her the satisfaction of an answer, instead choosing to drag her down into another kiss, your hands tightening in her hair. She melted into you immediately, her body molding perfectly against yours like it was made to be there. Her tongue grazed filthily against the roof of your mouth as she all but devoured you, and you groaned quietly as you tightened your legs around her waist, lifting your hips in an attempt at getting some relief.

That was all it took for Alexia to,scoop you up into her arms, hands cupping your ass and squeezing as she carried you through to the bedroom.

You huff before jumping out of the window. Wade would’ve loved to stop and admire your superhero landing, but he’s busy chasing after a very pissed Wolverine.

“Wolvie, stop! She won’t understand! Fuck. Shit. I said, Stop!” Wade takes off his mask. He wheezes because all he did all day was chase after the worst Wolverine. Logan’s words, not his. “HEY! I didn’t tell you about her for you to run off. We still have a job to do!”

“WADE WILSON!” You start to run, seeing Wade kneel on the ground. He still tries to catch his breath as you storm toward him. “I’d kill you but watching you grow legs and arms is disgusting!”

Instead of decapitating his head or stabbing Wade, you slap the back of his head.

“Ouch, Y/N.” He complains loudly. Wade got stabbed and shot; he lost body parts but whines like a baby when you slap him.

“Sweetheart, we both know you would have outlived all of them, no matter what. It just happened a little earlier this way.” Wade shrugs before putting his mask back on.

You run one hand down your face and huff. “What do you want, Wade? Is the world on fire, or did you lose a ball again?”

“No jokes about a man’s balls,” he points a gloved finger at you. “But yes, the world is ending once again. Or not. I mean… It depends.” Wade babbles as you put your hands on your hips.

“Wade.” You close your eyes and inhale sharply. “Whom did you bring here, and do I have to kill them?”

“No, no! You cannot kill him,” Wade hastily says. “I came here for a short break. You see, bad guys are after our cute asses, and this is the safest place I know.”

“Christ on a cracker, WADE!” You kick his shin. “I’ve been out of this business for years.” You dip your head, hearing someone sneak closer. “Why would you bring anyone here? This is a lost place. Dead and forgotten. Just like me and the rest of the X-Men. Just like—”

The man, looking so much like your one true love, dips his head. He has the same body, the same eyes, and the same claws. Hell, he even wears the same fucking suit. But he’s not your Logan. He’ll never be your Logan.

“Go away. Both of you. Whatever will happen to this universe is not my problem. Maybe I can finally rest then too.”

You turn around to walk away, leaving Wade and Logan’s clone behind.

“Wait, Y/N!” Wade jogs after you. “I know you’re angry, but I couldn’t stop him. If there’s only a tiny piece of the undefeatable Y/N still inside of you, help us. Help me save my friends and this world.”

“Your friends,” you say, your heart heavy with sadness and grief. You glance at the photo Wade shows you, swallowing thickly.

“If there was a way to save your friends, you’d do anything, right?” Wade presses on. Even though he knows it’s a low blow, he cannot shelter you or your feelings. You’re his only chance to convince Logan to help him and get his clones off his back. “Please help me…”

“What the fuck is that?” You dip your head to look at the ugliest dog you have ever seen. “Uh—is that thing even alive?” Crouching down, you poke the dog’s nose with your index finger. “Who did this to you, little pug?”

“I think he was born this way?” Wade chuckles while picking the dog up. “And he’s not ugly. Dogpool is the sweetest.”

“Y/N. How?” Logan finally found his voice. He steps closer to you and Wade, not looking you in the eyes. “Why did you do it?!” He yells before jumping at you.

Logan tackles you to the ground to ram his claws into your sides. He growls like an animal, stabbing you again and again.

“What’s his problem?” You laugh as Logan tries to kill you. His claws dig deep into your flesh, but it doesn’t do much damage.

“Uh—from what I heard, you killed his people because he didn’t love you or shit?” Wade shrugs before letting the dog lick his face.

“YOU!” Logan growls. He slides his claws back in to slam his fists into the ground. Again, and again, and again. You can hear bones crack and flesh tear. “Why don’t you die?”

Logan looks at you, shaking his head. “You’re not her…”

“I assume in your world, I was mortal,” you sit up and push Logan away. While you slowly get up, he watches you with tears in his eyes. “In this world, my Logan would’ve cut your head off for touching me.”

“After we introduced ourselves, we should talk about the guys wanting to end this world. Come on, sweetheart. You know you want to help your Deadpool.”

Yoongi is well within his rights to have a cigarette wherever he pleases. You just didn’t think he’d prefer to have one here, with you.

“You looked like you had fun today,” Yoongi says, the low hum of his voice effectively breaking you out of your thoughts.

“So… I had fun, you had fun,” you mumble, lazily kicking your feet to push the swing back and forth. “Crazy concept that you and I can have fun in the presence of each other.”

“You can admit the truce was a good idea. It’s okay, I won’t tell anyone you were wrong.”

Yoongi’s eyes meet yours. For a moment, he doesn’t say anything, just takes a slow drag of his cigarette as he considers you. You shrink, pinned as his eyes scan over your face for so long it feels unbearable.

I don't know where you got that from, i've played the game enough and don't recall such a statement. The Blight is contained in the Black City, that's why it's black. There's hardly any doubt about this idek why it's a point at all

The Fade has spirits, spirits represent or mirror emotions, ideas, concepts. Some are positive, others are negative, they're still spirits. The Veil separating reality changed everyone's perception of things, spirits once used to the fluid nature of the Fade were suddenly faced with a stagnant reality that didn't adjust to their will; crossing the Veil becomes a traumatic experience that literally changes their composition. This resulted in aberrations and other scary things that humans called demons. Whatever humans fail to understand always gets demonized. In the harrowing of a circle mage Warden we meet Sloth, a so called demon. The Fade is full of desire demons tempting mages all the time. We have seen this many times both in games and other media like the comics. Nightmare was not an anomaly only present because of Corypheus, call it demon, spirit or whatever, it was always there to begin with because fear is one of the most ancient and natural emotions of life. I agree demons are spirits too, but the lore states very clearly they don't just turn negative by crossing through the Veil, they ARE already present in the Fade from the start.

Another idea you pulled out of..somewhere, idk, i've never read anything like it. The Veil choking?? the life and magic out of Thedas? The Veil is an unfortunate by-product of the Evanuris prison, whatever went wrong in Solas' ritual caused the barrier meant to contain the Evanuris and the Blight in the Black City to extend further and contain the entire Fade apart from the rest of the world. And it's a VEIL. Not a wall, not just any barrier, but a VEIL. Veils are usually of see-through fabric, they're not rock solid, they allow for some things to pass through, and the Veil gets thinner in some places, making that even more likely to happen. And things have been passing through, pushing through for ages; it's only been ripped open in places a few times (Magisters Sideral, Corypheus, the occasional mage fucking shit up). A Veil ripped open is what we see in Inquisition, with the Breach and the tears all over, and in future Redcliffe as well, a Veil torn and taken down carelessly. It's not a wall -unless you count the shield Gaxkang drops called "Fade Wall" which if you think about it is indeed a way of seeing the Veil-, if it were it'd take more than a knife to open it. I think there's a confusion between the Veil, the Fade and the prison Solas made. The whole thing is like a freaking onion, i once posited all the circles in the murals were a barrier between a barrier and i was correct, there's the Veil surrounding the Fade -an accident- and the containment around the Black City. You don't wanna consider it, fine, but that does not erase the fact DAV clearly states multiple times that the Blight is in the Black city and Elgar'nan is trying to break in to get it out; it's not just chilling everywhere in the Fade.

I'll just point this out because I think is hilarious you did it: first you say he doesn't lie. Massive retcon, right? Oh he doesn't lie. Then you say he's an absolutely terrible liar. Which one is it? Either he never lies, or he lies poorly (which is still lying, mind you), you can't have both. Also, every damn single time he uses the "i saw it in the Fade" excuse he IS lying. We know he didn't see shit in the Fade, he lived it, he was there when things happened for thousands of years. Tricksters trick but also lie, a lot, lying it's a big part of their trickery. You failing to grasp this is entirely on you, and sorry not sorry but you don't get to define any aspect of the lore like this when even you contradicted yourself! This is the point that got me to write a lengthy counter because it is ridiculous, and i say this as a lore fan, who played all the games, dlc, got all the books, comics, i even watched Redemption ffs, also as a Solas fan, a Solavellan even. Solas has lied more times i care to count. Not just by omission, but actively lied. He spent all of Inquisition lying "oh i saw it in the Fade, i saw it in the Fade" dude you were there when it happened!! LOL Are you for fucking real? You literally went just "nuhn unh, Solas doesn't lie cause i say he didn't".

You can dislike the game all you want, but do yourself a favour and heed your own advice, listen to people who know the lore. Right now you just proved you don't know it as well as you think, and that your interpretation of it is tainted with your bitterness over a game you didn't like, which whether you accept it or not will always be a Dragon Age game, and the lore it presents, whether you accept it or not, will always be Dragon Age lore.

I'm relegating you to the list of people who didn't understood shit about the lore and Dragon Age as a whole. I've spent YEARS diving into the lore, analyzing everything, got a whole blog dedicated to that, got a considerable number of things right in the process, but i always phrased things as maybe, might be, could be, because i'm well aware my word is not the law. Your attitude is the most annoying part of your post, you can have any headcanons you like but you're not a lore master and you don't get to twist things in your anger like that.

Do whatever you want, believe whatever you want. And using Veilguard as any sort of source for anything remotely related to canon Lore is just ridiculous. It's so... awful, IMHO, to use it to defend any sort of point.

I'm not certain if this would be considered critical, so I'll put it under a cut. Potentially critical of Veilguard.

Though I'm really just talking about the Lore.

I point out 4 massive retcons in Veilguard that blew my mind and that I see people commonly using as arguing points. And yes, if someone wants to pay me for the time, I can prove all of it with sources.

What little canon Lore they actually used in Veilguard? They twisted beyond recognition.

Just a few examples.

1. The blight is NOT, in fact, (or even in Veilguard) 'everywhere in the Fade'. It has always been contained to the Black City, that floats disconnected from everything else in the Fade. It's why the previously golden city is black ffs! Even in Veilguard, it's really damned obvious that the Fade isn't full of blight. We hop in and out of the Fade throughout the whole damned game like it's a shopping mall.

2. The Fade is not full of demons. Demons are spirits (people) of emotion. What usually twists them into demons is coming through the veil! The only reason there was the big demon in DAI is because it was attached to Coryphyfish. There's probably some, but it's an arguable point that an emotion spirit of, say, anger, or spite is actually a demon. Emotions aren't bad. They wouldn't automatically be demons simply because they reflect a negative emotion.

3. The veil has been canonically choking the life and magic out of Thedas for thousands of years. If the veil didn't come down, there would be no Thedas. This is clearly spelled out in canon. The veil was never meant to be part of the world. At the end of Trespasser, the veil is as holey as my grandmother's doilies. It's not as they tried to depict it in Veilguard, a firm, whole wall holding hordes of demons and the blight of blights back. That's such a bullshit retcon, and I make weird faces every time I try to figure out the mental gymnastics necessary for someone to come up with that idea.

4. It's also a massive retcon that Solas lies. (Sigh. Yes. It really is. No matter what you believe.) He canonically does not. They rewrote his character for DAI so that he doesn't lie because it weakened the character. He was originally written as much more similar to Blackwall. They decided it weakened Solas as a character and made sure he doesn't lie. He obfuscates, misleads, doesn't answer, and is really good at letting people make assumptions or even leading people to make assumptions. Because that is what a Trickster does! But in all of DAI and Trespasser, he does not lie except once. At the Winter Palace when you ask him where he got the experience of court. No. A 'lie of omission' is not a lie by the definition or philosophical understanding of what a lie is. You, as the player, not paying close attention to what he says doesn’t mean he lies either! He is not the 'god of lies'. That's Epler's hate shining through. Throughout 3 games, many dlcs, books, comics, short stories, the Dread Wolf is known as the Trickster. The god of rebellion and sometimes the god of betrayal. He is never once referred to as the god of lies in anything pre-veilguard. It's. Bullshit.

And Solas is an absolutely terrible liar. He stumbles all over himself trying to do it in the winter palace. It's hilarious tbh.

Just, even if you liked Veilguard, don't use it as a defense in any sort of discussion of Lore. Perhaps listen to us Lore fiends, instead? Because they shat all over the Lore for Veilguard.

Real talk? It makes you look ignorant to anyone who actually has been paying attention to the Lore.

With a deep inhale, he leans back against the wall of the house, taking in the taste of nicotine. He's promised his roommate, Nicholas, that he'll quit, but instead he’s hiding outside to sneak a final cig of the night. He’s convinced himself that as long as he's not doing it in the house, then Nicholas won't mind.

The neighborhood is eerily quiet tonight, and the streetlights barely illuminate the area down the side of the house where he’s hiding, effectively concealing him in the shadows. As he flickers away the ash from his cigarette, he catches a fleeting glimpse of light from the corner of his eye. 

Looking up and around, he surveys the area, trying to figure out what caught his attention. Then, his eyes fall on a house opposite his own. The light is on in one of the front upstairs bedrooms. 

The curtains are wide open, and for a fleeting moment, Folio watches, observing no movement until he spots a tall, slender man entering the room. Folio can see the towel draped around his waist, and his hair is still damp from the evident shower he’s just taken. As he allows his eyes to linger on him for a moment longer, he notices the intricate array of tattoos adorning his body.

The neighbors arms are muscular, bulging almost as he paces the room, oblivious to the possibility of being watched. His head nods in rhythm as his mouth moves in a singing motion. When Folio’s eyes catch sight of the TV screen hanging on the wall, he sees it's playing the opening credits of an anime.

Cute. Folio thinks to himself. 

Folio watches him intently, the front of his jeans tightening. He reaches down to touch with his free hand, seeking a momentary relief from the building pressure. He can’t tear his eyes away from his neighbor, especially not when he carelessly walks around his room, towel now pulled from his waist and exposing himself completely to the world beyond his window.

Naturally, Folio’s eyes lower, and he takes in the sight of the guy’s hung cock. It’s enough to make a choked groan rise up his throat as he strokes the length of his own hard cock through his jeans, his thumb just barely touching the head through the thick fabric. “Someone’s a slutty puppy,” he whispers to himself, his hand pressing more firmly against the crotch of his jeans and rubbing himself with increasing vigor. 

The ash, which has accumulated on the end of his cigarette, falls to the floor. He's completely forgotten about the reason he initially came outside, too captivated by his new favorite view. 

When his neighbor turns away from the window, he catches a glimpse of how perky his ass is, and his mind immediately wanders to the desire to bite it. He fantasizes about having him bend over the bed he’s currently leaning over to reach for something, and then pushing him into the pillows with his ass high up while he breeds and claims him as his own. 

It’s a thought that he clings to as his hips jerk with the movement of his hand, getting himself off to the idea of fucking this new neighbor he’s currently lusting after. Folio watches him wander around his room naked, completely oblivious to his present actions.

When Folio’s release hits him, his body trembles as he presses back against the wall, muffling his sounds with a hash bite to his lower lip, the taste of copper filling his mouth. The cigarette he had been holding falls to the floor, and his foot crushes it completely. He feels the warmth spreading through his boxers and the wet patch seeping through his jeans against his hand, but he's unbothered by the mess he’s made, knowing this is just another in a series of many. It's not the first and it won't be the last.

As he descends from his euphoric state, he's jolted by Nicholas’ voice, which echoes through the house before he emerges from the back to look down the side, where Folio is currently hiding.

“Hey, you coming back—You haven’t been smoking out here again, have you?” 

His tone is accusatory, and Folio responds with a scoff.

“No.”

Nicholas knows he’s lying, and Folio is aware of it, but neither of them bothers to admit it.

“Well, are you coming in or what?” Nicholas asks.

“Yeah, in just a minute.” Folio indicates for him to head back inside, and once he's alone again, he turns his attention back to the house across the street. He notices that the curtains have now been drawn, and the light switched off, with the dim glow of the TV being all which shines through.

ok FIRST OFF. basically the very very very basic lore rundown vis a vis What The Hell Is Their Issue is that essentially theyre both semi-hosts to a fucked up fungus* (*think of cordyceps fungi if u want a similar example ^_^) thats using their bodies to keep itself alive.

in moore's case it primarily resides in his throat & mouth* (*hence the fucked up hoarse & wavery voice + stutter) & in theresa's case it primarily resides in her heart* (*hence the fact she essentially just. cannot die. it just refuses to let her heart stop beating. lol. sucks to be her). moore's "healing" is essentially speeding up the healing process but sacrificing pieces of himself to do so, meanwhile he recovers at the same rate a normal human would with those injuries. the entire process is just . incredibly painful and draining for him. sucks to be that guy Lol Lmfao Even.

ok hope you got that. NOW onto their . like. normal actual dynamics i promise this is Far easier to explain.

moore works primarily on site as a sign language interpreter, and he'll pretty much work on anything he can have access to. the man loves information and its basically enrichment for him to be allowed to translate things. he also doubles as an off site medic, traveling primarily to areas where medical help isn't able to be received quick as a first resort health system so they don't use up their medical resources as quick. really the only reason they even have him on medical calls is because he was a med student who just . never went into nursing after graduation. worlds most traumatized 42 year old man who has not socially progressed past the age of 10. He Sucks Bad. its great

THERESA, on the other hand, is just. worlds worst interviewer. she works primarily with the more "violent" or typically dangerous humanoid scps doing interviews which . usually ends in her getting her ass kicked or being dragged out of the room before anything actually gets physical (really, its just because the foundation doesnt want to spend more money on fixing her messes than they have to). her main goal is pretty much to see how much they can take before it turns to violence. theresa takes primary control over anything relating to moore with the justification that he doesn't "truly understand what he's getting into", so long as she has permission from the higher ups.

theres just So Much happening in the background in their relationship honestly like. brief examples include theresa purposefully keeping him sheltered and insisting he not socialize with anyone as a way to keep him under her thumb, the fact moore hates her but literally wouldnt know who he is without her and also thats his sister still and he cant just Leave Her, and also just the fact alone that she, even within foundation walls, has found a way to isolate him further and keep him truly controlled. also like . dont even get me started on theresa purposefully injuring herself so moore will heal her so she has to take care of him and just manipulate him further. endless spiral. they suck so fucking much. my constant go-to is just "cain & abel if they sucked shit and were awful for eachother". but that would take Forever to properly explain so i will not even try to. anyways.

I think the part I still don’t get is, why is on-the-spot healing a threat to exploration? If the goal of this exercise is to get them to spend longer in the dungeon … like, how does removing healing items help that?

If a player has, say, a wand of cure wounds. They get in a hard fight, they get knocked down to low health on a good number of people. They now need to rest or otherwise heal up to keep going without dying. So they use 4 of 7 charges to get most of the party back to a reasonable level of health so that they don’t need to rest right now, and can handle a trap or a small encounter while they search for a good place to hole up. Is that not a good thing? They’ve spent a resource to enable them to keep going without having to rest for sheer ‘the next fight will be a TPK otherwise’ reasons. They have spent a resource to stay in the dungeon. To keep exploring. I don’t understand how preventing this helps our cause here.

If you want to discourage the party from having to go all the way back out in order to safely heal up and recharge their slots/abilities, surely it makes more sense to enable them to do those things in the dungeon. I thought that was the specific logic of doing this in a system where the characters are hardier and more powerful?

So if you want to encourage them to keep going deeper, you give them the resources to do that. You let them have healing items. You set up places that can be made safe for long resting in the dungeon. You reward the choice of picking up, say, the Alarm spell or Leomund’s Tiny Hut, or a character who thought to bring string for tripwires and ball bearings for traps. If they brought the tools to stay there, let them stay there. Let them use them. And actually go out of your way to give them to them. Let them find a scroll of Leomund’s Tiny Hut. Let them find a goblin camp’s stash of pots and pans to set up an alarm system. Make small out of the way rooms with only one entrance that they can barricade to make a safe space to long rest. Let them find friendly factions that they can safely stay with for a night. That they can buy/earn healing potions off. That they can use as a safe point of retreat if they meet something that nearly wipes them further in.

Like. You want them to keep going. The healing items let them keep going. The security of having the healing items in case something happens encourages them to push that little bit more and maybe take those extra risks. I don’t see the conflict here? Healing item good. Makes player more willing to explore. I don’t see the problem?

Because otherwise its just a grim gauntlet of ‘how fucked up can I allow myself to get before I have to die or retreat’. It’s not exploration, it’s just an endurance gauntlet.

Like I get the fear of making it too easy, but honestly …

I feel like, if we are removing concrete time and/or end of the world pressure for force them to stay in and endure the slog, players are more likely to nope out of something that’s just grim and unrelentingly difficult for no reason. If you want them to explore, then you have to encourage that. By making it doable. By making it interesting. By making them want to keep going, and then giving them the tools to do so.

I will grant that I’ve never run a megadungeon, so maybe there’s something about the experience that I’m missing. Maybe some players just don’t want to explore for no reason. In which case, honestly, this just likely isn’t the right campaign for those players? But I don’t understand why we’re going around trying to force them to stay, by doing things like punishing leaving, instead of just giving them the tools to make them want to?

Just give them a wand of healing and let them push their luck, you know?

I’m watching a (3hr) discussion on megadungeons as a concept for modern d20 games on a youtube channel called Knights of Last Call, and I’m enjoying it a lot, because it does explore a couple of points that I’ve been very much looking for. Namely, the idea that megadungeons should be there to enable and reward exploration. Which means, among other things, there can’t be a time-pressure meta plot (you have to get to the bottom of the dungeon to stop the lich before he destroys the world), and that the game/DM needs to explicitly reward (with xp, magic items, etc) the act of exploration, not the act of killing things while exploring.

Because the thing I always found enchanting about the idea of massive dungeons and complexes was the idea of going in to see what’s down there. Not being forced in for a plot, but just … because I’m curious, and I want to see what’s there. And he discusses how modern d20 games like Pathfinder and 5e can actually be better for that than OSR-type games because characters are more powerful and sturdy and can survive doing that. You can explore, and (most likely) have a decent shot of surviving said exploration. You can take risks because you’ll survive a broader range of risks.

The thing with a megadungeon is that it’s there to be explored, and so to encourage, enable and reward exploration for people who want to play that kind of game in the first place, you have to a) not penalise taking risks and going exploring by making it instantly lethal to try and go anywhere, and b) actively reward going exploring by making it the main way your character gets more cool things, such as magic items and/or new abilities from levelling up.

(And, he’s less explicit about this, but also making the rewards self-contained to the dungeon, things you find and gain in the dungeon, and not things you’d have to bring outside the dungeon to benefit from. So cool items you can keep and use, experience to level up, knowledge that would allow you to access new areas, etc, not things like gold where you’d have to go back outside to spend it, or quests that you have to go to external parties to be rewarded for).

The discussion goes into some detail about potential ways to do this, and potential problems with various methods, but overall I just really like the tone of the discussion. Because that very much is a thing I’ve been looking for for a long, long time. A game that rewards the simple desire to go somewhere and see what’s there. I don’t want to explore a massive underground complex because there’s a bad guy down there and I need to stop him, I want to explore it because there’s rumours that there’s a vast underground sea down there where creatures that haven’t been seen in aeons are rumoured to still live (blame reading Journey to the Centre of the Earth as a kid), or to discover why there’s a massive dungeon down there and learn who built it, or just because it’s a big strange space and I just want to see what it looks like.

He does talk about how you make dungeons interesting enough to justify that, things like thematically-distinct areas (like the underground lake, or the weird sunless forest, or the ghoul town, etc) so that it’s not one endless slog of ‘10ft wide corridors and stone rooms’, and to make it interconnected so that the players have full choice of where they go and what risks they want to take (enabling them to skip ahead difficulty levels, or retreat if need be, or escape areas that they’re not enjoying). And to possibly put in some distinct … not end goals, but capstone events, like a boss monster very deep down, that might feel like an ‘ending’ if the party wants to ‘finish’ the dungeon. Not something that will ‘burst out and destroy the world’, but something contained to the dungeon that a party could triumph over if they want a ‘final challenge’ sort of feeling. But one that’s optional, a challenge they can take up if they want to, not a prerequisite for getting out of the dungeon or completing a large goal, but just a challenge that exists if they want to take it on.

Because, and I do agree, a lot of the problem with exploring in D&D is not necessarily that there’s no mechanical support for it, in terms of things like skills, etc, but because there’s no reward for it, and in terms of structured adventures, there’s often either narrative or mechanical punishment for it (running out of time on the baddie, or running into something too lethal for your party to handle with no option to nope out). A megadungeon as a concept is a cool environment where exploration is the whole point, and the only point, and if you take care not to put an external pressure on it (‘kill the lich or else’), then then party has time to poke around and decide what they want to see and what risks they want to take (or nope out of). Especially in something so big that there’s no real chance of finishing it, so there’s no ‘100% completion’ pressure, just a big buffet of options for people to pick and choose from.  

(There are so many things in 5e that would be excellent for an exploration game, especially in terms of spells and magic items, but because combat is so much the driving force of the standard mode of play, people are reluctant to ‘waste’ spells known/prepared and/or items attuned on things like Alarm or Water Walk or Purify Food & Drink or non-combat items like Candles of the Deep or Foldable Boats or Slippers of Spider Climbing when those slots could be used for combat spells/items instead. But if exploration gets you XP, and if you can nope out of combat as required because there’s no massive stakes/story riding on it, then you’ve got more room for these things).

There’s also an in-depth discussion on ‘game balance’ and CR, and why megadungeons might not necessarily require them, for the simple fact that everything in the dungeon is optional and not required to forward the story/plot, so you can try challenges way above your level if you’re feeling frisky that day, and just nope out and go a different way if it starts really not working for you. Which I feel is a fun point.

There is a point that this is a specific mode of play and not meant to be the point of the game in general. It’s specifically for people (like me) who want exploration as its own point and reward, without needing a quest or storyline attached, and for whom combat is an element/hazard/complication but not the point. But. If you are specifically doing a MEGADUNGEON, it’s an interesting look at things to consider and what people might want out of a massive self-contained dungeon that’s going to be the whole point of the campaign in and of itself.  

Where he loses me is when the discussion moves to how to prevent the '15 Minute Adventuring Day', where people go in, do a room or two, and then go back out to rest and heal and resupply, instead of staying in the dungeon to keep exploring. And for some reason allowing healing is bad for this? If you want them to stay in the dungeon, how is it bad to let them heal in the dungeon? Set up factions to trade with and potential base camp locations in the dungeon to let them heal and resupply and set up safe areas so that they can stay in there potentially infinitely? Though it’s possible that I missed something about his point there.

But yeah. I love the idea of megadungeons, vast areas to explore just because they’re there, and I love the idea of game modes with all the cool abilities and spells and powers of D&D BUT where the thing that’s rewarded is exploration and interacting with the environment rather than combat.

(There’s also … I think this also reminds me of the story arc vs episodic discussion regarding TV, where I genuinely like episodic series equally to story-line driven ones, and I think that in games it also works, where there’s a BIG SETTING and the point is to go out and have episodic adventures in it. A loose sandbox like a megadungeon where there’s no plot, you’re just exploring and seeing what you encounter day to day (and possibly developing plots as you interact with individual areas/factions and then connect them to other ones) is also an excellent way to play a game).

love love LOVE what matthew is doing with this portion of the campaign and how it mirrors how organizations like the ruby vanguard recruit people who were actually deeply wronged and gives them an outlet, and how a lot of the time their motivations are understandable, and wanting to get rid of the gods is not, in itself, the worst thing ever to many of these characters

but then you have orym there who is a widower with no living father because of the ruby vanguard, and no matter how the world/matt/the ruby vanguard justifies their actions, there will never, ever be a good enough reason to convince orym his family had to die for this cause
