(Hello again! It’s me with another media recommendation.)

My Father, Myself is a film directed by Joel Lamangan. Of the eight official entries in the 2022 Metro Manila Film Festival, it grossed the lowest at the box office, probably because it’s rated R-18 and the country’s biggest mall chain doesn’t show R-18 films in its cinemas (as far as I know). Here’s a summary of the plot:

Robert and Amanda have two children: Mica (biological) and Matthew (adopted). The latter joined the family after his biological father Domeng (Robert’s former friend and lover) was murdered. Mica falls in love with Matthew. Her mother Amanda is surprised but supportive, while Matthew himself rebuffs her…only to sleep with her later. Unknown to both Mica and Amanda, Matthew seems to have eyes for Robert.

One night, while they’re talking about how much they miss Domeng, Robert comments on Matthew’s resemblance to his dad and Matthew responds by kissing Robert, who pushes him away. Matthew continues pursuing Robert, who claims not to be gay (which is odd because there’s a flashback to Matthew’s childhood where he saw Robert and Domeng kissing). They hook up. Matthew considers breaking up with Mica, but Robert tells him to just wait until Mica falls out of love with him. Unfortunately, Mica gets pregnant. When she admits this to the family, Robert attacks Matthew. Amanda steps in. She tells Robert that they should now prepare for Matthew and Mica’s wedding. Robert objects on the grounds that they’re basically siblings. Amanda responds that everyone knows that Matthew’s adopted, so they can claim to have arranged the marriage when the kids were still young.

Matthew and Robert meet in the cemetery while the latter is visiting Domeng’s grave. They kiss…and of course, Mica catches them.

“I can’t believe my own father is having an affair with my boyfriend!”

She demands that Matthew choose between her and Robert. Matthew picks…her. The movie ends with Robert having killed himself. He was heartbroken because he would’ve picked Matthew over his family had the latter decided to do so, too.

I haven’t watched the movie myself, but I remember that it was controversial. People on Reddit were making the usual jokes (Alabama, House of the Dragon, Habsburgs) and complaining about the bad representation of gay people and the state of local cinema. As for me, my issue is the legal side . The current Family Code doesn’t allow marriages between the same person’s adopted and biological children, so I don’t know how Matthew and Mica can get married…unless the adoption wasn’t formalized on paper and the family just raised the kid. Or perhaps they could bribe some government officials to look the other way? Robert’s a lawyer, Amanda’s family has money, lots of people get away with corruption in real life, and not everyone’s aware of the Family Code…🤔

Amanda’s support of Mica/Matthew is hilarious. It’s less “I ship my kids OMG they’d be so great together” and more like “You should take responsibility for my daughter,” but I’ll accept it. I can’t decide whether I ship Mica/Matthew or Matthew/Robert (or if either of them are shippable at all, for that matter). I’ll need to see the actual movie for that; in the meantime, here’s a trailer. It reveals way too much of the story for my taste, but at least there are English subtitles.

hello! first off im assuming you mean exr fic recs, since those are the only ones i have read (sorry i only care about the shippable twinks im problematic).

anyway that is a very good question that is harder for me to answer than it should be, because the thing is i am discovering that i am very particular when it comes to exr fic - both because im picky wrt characterizations, and bc im weak and i need happy endings (which obviously rules out almost all canon timeline fics). so what im going to do here is only give you fics i have no reservations about, and you can dm me if you want to hear about more.

we'll start off with world ain't ready, because how can we not. it's a fake dating high school au that takes place in the mid 2000s (a fact that never fails to bring me joy), and it has to be one of my favorite fics i have ever read. it's well written, the characterizations are soso good and despite dealing with some heavy subjects it's such a feelgood read for me. in fact im the only one in our 3 person book club who hasn't started my war reread yet. i should do that

speaking of our book club. It's Not the Same Anymore is a bookshop au where grantaire is a father (!), and it's is the last thing i imagined myself getting into, but life is full of surprises i guess. it's just one of those fics that has A Feeling to it iykwim, it's a delight to read, and the way it handles the characters is simply beautiful. it also includes one of my favorite portrayals of jehan, and definitely my favorite description of their house.

another one i haven't been able to stop thinking about is how sweet and lovely dost thou make the shame. the thing is. 10k words of pwp have no business making me this emotional. i thought about rereading rn so i could explain to you why i love it so much but im at work and do in fact have some boundaries so. just trust me ig

and lastly. i don't usually break my habit of Not Engaging With Sad, but i had to make an exception for ta bouche de ciel by @jondrettegirls, and it absolutely destroyed me. it's definitely the most difficult fic on this list so mind the warnings, but god. i feel like it reached into my soul and rearranged my organs. thank you lucy <3

Just had to unfollow a creator I really enjoyed for silly reasons, so I feel the need to say something.

Characters that you post publicly will be enjoyed in ways that may not satiate you fully. People will ship or not ship your OCs, people will have headcanons, people will draw them how they see them.

That being said, my characters are all 100% shippable, headcanonable, and kinnable (save for my sona on the last one 😅 please be normal). I don’t care if you see my OCs differently. I don’t care if you ship them with OCs or yourself even if I don’t personally see the chemistry. I don’t care if you headcanon them as autistic or bipolar or whatever.

My OCs are your dollies to play with. I respect you as long as you don’t use anything Ive made or own to produce hateful or gross content (ie. Inc*st, r*pe, etc).

I think the 90s House of Usher movie lets the incest be canon!

The number of adaptations is insane. I was going to list them, until I realized there were too many. There aren't just movies and the miniseries this year, there also seem to be horror anthology series episodes and other things.

I would love to hear from anyone who has seen any of these and has any info on 1) Whether Roderick and Madeline are characters in it, 2) whether they are shippable, and 3) whether they are canon.

The only version I have seen is this one from 2006. It is not a very good movie. It is, like may of these others, a loose modernized adaptation:

Three years after her lover, Rick Usher, and her best friend, Maddy Usher, had suddenly disappeared from her life without explanation, Jill Masters receives a phone call with news of Maddy's death. This is not a movie I would probably recommend for R/M, however it does have a very visually striking ending for them that made an impression on me. I would call it canon and have classified it as such all along. I would even call it endgame. But a horror sort of endgame.

Saw your post about ginhiji being hated by the Gintama fandom.... I don't mean this in a bad way at all and I'm sorry if I do sound mean, I promise I'm not starting a fight 🙏

But I just wanted to say that a lot of people acutally love ginhiji and it's argueably the biggest ship - lots of fics and fanarts and I personally have not seen any hate for the ship (been in the fandom for almost three years now). Especially on Twitter, there are so many cute and soft fanarts of them. I think the ship is actually so loved

Also in general the Gintama fandom is so chill and don't really care much about other people's ships, except for like, Gintoki x Otae vs Gintoki x Tsukuyo shippers lol but that was shortlived thankfully. Gintoki is so shippable so every ship with him is pretty much valid (except for Gintoki x Kagura... that one's just.... nope).

For the most part, the Gintama fandom is pretty chill, not much hate coming around, which is why I love it a lot

I just remembered something. Didn't Tae answer some comment, I'm not sure where, but the comment was from a taekooker about the ship and Tae said "get out of your imagination. It's not good in there" or something along those lines. Don't you think that if there's something between them he would have just ignored the comment? If they're together it's kinda rude. on the ‘what do they become divorced from their original context’ the answer is dry as hell i’m afraid to confirm ! it’s like the people who uwuify south park characters, modern tumblr and twitterina tweens don’t seem able to comprehend the old culture orz …

no but the thing is the south park people are FULLY delusional like there is LITERALLY nothing to south park but outdated 'ant-pc' humor and crude art. i have seen a lot lot lot of south park and am speaking with an extensive amount of knowledge on the series and the characters are incredibly 2 dimensional and the show has little to no overarching narrative aside from a few vague plotlines. so like to turn that into shippable fandom fodder you have to be fully removed from reality

RVB, ON THE OTHER HAND, has a heart and sincerity to it that south park completely lacks. the characters are not exactly super complex but they have a nuance to them that is definitely more than the south park characters are allowed because RVB is a narrative show, not an episodic one. there is conceptually something here that makes sense to engage with from a Fandom perspective. which is why its so fucking funny to me because like.

okay like i haven't seen much of the south park Fandom so i know that this exists. but i dont think its the majority. like. i think most people's attempt to reckon with the horrific ideology south park peddles is the 'its satire' defense. they don't want to completely defang the source material. RVB fans on the other hand seem to want exactly that. like there are a bunch of people who seem to be under the impression that if you stripped out all of the jokes made at the expense of minorities rvb would still somehow not only be funny, but actually better. and i just literally don't think that's true because as much as the shitty very un-pc jokes are jokes in and of themselves, the larger impact of it is the pinpoint accuracy with which the show preserves This Exact Kind Of Guy Anyone Who Was Alive In The 00s Knew. like you lose out SO much of what makes the show Hit if the characters aren't Those Guys.

so when you want to like, woke-ify that canon and bring modern standards of acceptable humor + make these characters have something approximating the mainstream contemporary understanding of queer theory, disability activism, and critical race theory, i think you'd end up genuinely doing a disservice to the show. i'm not trying to say Actually, Calling People the R Slur Is High Art And You Can't Get Rid Of It (the gay jokes however ARE high art and i can say that) but i will say that i genuinely think RVB has a lot of value as a time capsule for early post-9/11 american ennui and i do think attempting to sanitize it would remove the authenticity.

south park is on the other hand a LOT more anachronistic in it's vibe, and the characters in that show aren't a direct 1:1 stand in for any type of real subculture that existed because the characters adopt whatever contemporary bigotry is the exact right level of edgy for the current set of writers. some south park episodes, individually, are of their era but overall the show isn't a meta-level Period Piece in the way RVB is. the show doesn't HAVE that authenticity because it lacks a coherent perspective or ideology to align itself with. i dont know what im saying anymore what were we talking about. this got away from me.

thesis statement: south park shippers are fully removed from reality but people who want red vs blue characters to talk to each other about the split attraction model are slightly less removed from reality, which actually makes it worse

hi! I don’t think that’s really why I ship nikolina personally. I multi ship and do enjoy zoyalai a lot too but nikolina is just more interesting to me bc of the ways they offset each other. like nikolai’s perspective of like image and politics above all else vs alina only really caring about how meaningful things are/actual happiness. like I think they could help each other grow? and I especially was just really into the shared trauma aspect hinted at in r&r when he asks her to stay because he thought only she could understand. and idk arranged marriage type stuff is just very fun to me! and like the vulnerability it takes for characters in an arranged marriage to admit that they’re genuinely in love when it started out as a practical arrangement. I like it way more than forbidden romance so that just ends up being a point for it over zoyalai to me. and also just the potential angst of it being really clear that someone else was always alina’s first choice.

anyway yes nikolai/alina/zoya and zoyalina are themselves also galaxy brained ships and I absolutely love them too! tgt is just very shippable imo 😂

i don't know if i've just been out of touch with shadow and bone, since i don't read or think about it as much as the 2 duologies. but i personally ship zoyalai because i don't think nikolai ever really loved alina that way. and i get why some people find arranged marriages interesting, but i love nikolai so much and i feel i root for him more than alina's story. and instead of finding it interesting, it's heartbreaking to me to see nikolai have to give up so much his whole life. and i think he deserves to choose someone he truly loves, and i think he loves zoya. i'm not against nikolina, just my perspective! i don't really mind the forbidden romance since i think it's written well but i understand the preference! and on the other hand, i don't think alina also loved nikolai that way. she clearly loves mal and i just want her to be happy. and on zoya's end, i think she deserves someone who loves her as much as nikolai does. she's been through a lot and i think nikolai truly loves her and she truly loves him and that's all i really care about in a ship. but i'm so grateful to hear your side <3

I could care less about who ends up with who because the main thing that is carrying this show on its back is the love each sibling has for the other.

It's also fun watching their interactions back when the show tells u who's related to who

(it's never revealed to the contestants in the show but we aka the viewer get to find out)

&post reveal to us the viewers, it's fun just watching them putting on their best actor faces so no one in the house catches on.

I think what makes it that much sweeter is that the only familiar face in a house of unfamiliar people is their sibling, so they have someone who has their back there with them.

They also have solo confessionals&the things that come out of each siblings mouth about their counterpart are so adorable if you don't say awwwwwwww 30 minutes into episode 1 ur pants will catch immediately on fire.

I'm very rarely into real life shipping so I basically checked it out, out of curiosity because I saw a tiktok that was a short clip from the show of two siblings talking&I thought the scene was cute

&now 6 episodes in I ship all the siblings with each other&each ship has become my new obsession.

!! i’ve talked abt that before, iiiiin this post? but! it’s old, so lemme reclarify my thoughts + update things a bit :]

tl;dr - in canon it’s not okay, but the canon writing was. Yikes, being arguably homophobic, and within that poor writing, the issues between those characters stem from trauma, so?

i think like… the interactions we see between tsurugi and yuki in dra show a lot of signs of a good and healthy relationship, but if we stick with 100% canon/linujs writing, things between them wouldn’t be healthy, and in an au sticking with characterizations, where all that’s different is that like… utsuro is resurrected and comes back to life, tsurugi wouldn’t be able to forgive him/move past what happened? i think utsuros response to that is a lot more open to interpretation, but still. there’s tsurugi

whiiiich… tsurugis writing is. Trash, it can definitely be read as homophobic, which,, a lot of his queer coding is shown in scenes with yuki! so u could definitely argue that if linujs wasn’t trash, and wasn’t homophobic, they’d have a better dynamic/be more shippable?

the ways in which they r incompatible/have issues stem from trauma, and it was poor/homophobic writing that prevented them from growing, kept them as stagnant characters, so im like… supportive of people who reject canon when it comes to its flaws, and retain nuance when reworking characters, because. as we see, utsuro struggles with which decision to make, and it is feasible for him to choose hope, he just. gets offed immediately when he does that; which goes to say that yes, even with how things r written in canon, there’s solid potential for both characters to grow and have a healthy relationship

this in mind though, i’m not down with 100% canon kinjomae; tsurugi doesn’t get better, and even if he did, maybe he just wouldn’t forgive utsuro/grow to have that kinda vibe with him! and i absolutely understand people who are uncomfy with any version of it because of how things are in canon.

pretty much, linujs treatment of them was homophobic, and also just,, not really good? didn’t… do anything for the plot or the characters or the themes or anything? and in any rewrite where they’re actually handled with care and not. homophobia, i can see it! there’s genuine care there, yuki was there for tsurugi genuinely, without any ill intent, buuut in canon, it wouldn’t work out, and i respect either decision; to rewrite, or to stick with canon!

Listen, I hate gatekeepers and elitist fans as much as the next guy,

but

there's a huge distinction between canon Enjolras: Don't like your current government? Overthrow it through violent revolution. I don't like killing people but it can be a necessary evil. Stage a coup. The people have to rise as a whole.

and then fanon Enjolras, who's typically more along the lines of: Change can happen from the inside!🥺🥺 Small changes lead to big ones! 🥺🥺 No, R, you can't be an anarchist! (also usually a liberal, but like aggressively liberal.)

Jehan Prouvaire is also a good example. He dies one of the most courageous deaths in the entire canon, but in fics he's often reduced to 'soft uwu poet/flower boy'. And yeah, that's sweet, but, y'know. Diminishes his character a lot?

I'm not saying that I want everyone to be serious all the time about everything. I myself read and write fluffy fics all the time. (i just want them to be happy, okay?) But it's also really weird seeing such a drastic change between the original works and the fanon material, especially considering that they're supposed to be these radical idealist revolutionaries.

(now, granted, a lot of the works that are prime examples of this tend to be older fics written around the 2013-2016 period where i'm pretty sure a majority of the fandom were, like, fourteen year olds, and again, i cannot stress how much i am not one to talk, but yeah.)

Many fics also make l'ABC primarily focus on queer issues. Which, yeah, great! But, same issue with greatly diminishing their entire purpose and existence, specifically in canon. They often just have chronically online ideas, (which makes sense, because they were written online, but still.) I mean, I headcanon most of the characters -- scratch that, all of the characters (personally transmasc R and transfemme Jehan are some of my favs) -- as queer and/or trans, but that's not their focus, or point, and being queer shouldn't be used as a main plot point, unless it's something specifically just about queer rights or queer theory. But if it's just a normal fic, as a queer person, it gets boring and quite frankly kind of annoying when being queer is the only thing that gets talked about. I mean, if you're going for realism, whether in a historical or modern AU, being queer can't be, like, ignored, it has to be acknowledged, as characters' environments and existence in heteronormative sOciETy would probably hold some relevance in their relationship, but I just don't think it should be the entire point.

This isn't to say that they can't be soft or feminine. No. Give them skirts and makeup. Make them defy gender norms. Objectify them all you want, I don't care.

I mean, this could just be me throwing a hissy-fit over something small, but it does bother me.

It's just interesting to see and it kind of just goes to show that you can put several young and canonically attractive and charming young (shippable) male characters with funny personalities that fit gently into a mould and people just take that and fucking run with it.

OHHH I have so many thoughts on pastry cookie and how the fandom sees her and pomegranate

i think we all r aware of pastrys backstory , basically faithful to the order until she faces the tower where she is shown the truth then traumatized .

that backstory is similars to pomegranates !

pommy , like pastry , was faithful to her village and devoted to the tree . i know ovenbreak and crk lore aren’t exact , but pom’s candy lore states

and in addition she was the high priestess , she had a destiny to lead her people and follow the sacred tree

so , my point is pom was / is manipulated by dark enchantress . there is no doubt in that and if u can’t understand that you lack comprehension skills . someone doesn’t immediately go from being a devoted leader to burning their village down .

pommy is also religiously traumatized, to believe in one religion so faithfully u were destined to lead it then learn the awful truth . [ huh wonder who else had that happen to them ]

however , de doesn’t do this to show pom the truth , it’s to manipulate her to joining the cookies of darkness.

Pomegranate shows Pastry the truth to actually show her the falsehood of her religion, something she understands and had to witness. That’s why I say Pomegranate and Pastry have similar backstories , Both are faithful to their religion until they are shown the truth. However, the difference comes from their behavior, which I think isn’t treated fairly by the fandom.

Pastry and Pomegranate are still both being lied to. Both are still under false pretenses and believe in their authority, the Only reason why pastry is seen as more redeemable than pom is because she does show more remorse [ barely ] , and because of her interaction with red velvet.

It’s so annoying [ to me ] how the fandom clings onto the one scene where pastry shows slight hesitation to shooting redvel . Had Pom not stepped in and shown Pastry the truth, pastry would have most likely finished her mission , returned [ maybe regretfully ] back to the order and moved on. While it does show Pastry has more of a chance of escaping the church , whose to say she won’t be like pomegranate and become devoted to dark enchantress ?

In addition, the fandom woobyfies pastry and redvel . like some of u guys cling to ships because of 1 moment [ which is fine , but sometimes it becomes just hypocrisy when u judge other ships / characters ] people make pastry to be this poor victim who doesn’t know the consequences of her actions , when while slightly true , she still is complacent . it’s trauma , she’s being lied to , and the same can be applied to pomegranate. But the fandom treats pom differently because she doesn’t hesitate in her actions , and she isn’t shippable with men .

like i get if u don’t like pom , she is irredeemable and does fucked up things but I think weird y’all completely ignore ones trauma and solely call her derogatory terms like ??? yes trauma doesn’t excuse actions , but you’ll ignore poms and then call dark choco a giant soft boy even tho he was willing to kill kids [ gen ]

also the fact that affogato has no redeemable quality and is selfish , but it’s okay and even ‘ fun ‘ because hes hot gnc man . the same could b said with licorice he has no moments of hesitation and was willing to poison the entire hollyberry princess contest , but because he isn’t a threat it doesn’t matter that he too is morally grey that learns toward black  . And same for other characters with trauma , their actions r excused because of slight moments of what they could be but they still always end back on the villain side .

Hi there! I recently watched two films by Danish director Kasper Juhl:

A God Without a Universe 2015 (Gudsforladt - Danish title)

Moonfire 2018

The first one has cannon bro/sis incest, but a warning that the film is not exactly for the faint hearted. It has strong violence and some disturbing scenes, including r*pe, but aside from that I actually thought it was a pretty interesting story that left me thinking. The relationship between the siblings Anders and Mia is complex but quite sweet, and they are both in love with each other, though Anders is much more tortured by the concept than Mia is. Despite the overall disturbing themes, I quite liked this film.

The second film does not have cannon bro/sis incest, but the relationship between the siblings Valdemar and Alex is extremely codependent and complex. Alex is a lesbian which complicates things further between them (and also had me rolling my eyes a little at that trope I feel like some movies rely on to create an “incest barrier” between extremely shippable siblings lol, but seeing this director has not shied away from full on incest in the past, that’s not what’s happening here). My assessment was that despite their crazy dynamic and Alex’s sexual preference, I do think that they have feelings for each other. I feel like Alex could have a subconscious attraction to her brother, and Valdemar definitely is attracted to his sister, although is bitter about her sexuality. I also think it’s implied that there was possibly some incest between them at some point, given the antics they get up to in the film. This movie was also very interesting, though a warning that there is also some violence, but nowhere near on par with the first film.

Also, as a side note - the same actor plays the brother in both films (and it helps that he is pretty handsome *wink *wink)

I highly recommend them both if you are able to watch them. I was able to find them both streaming online pretty easily. I personally prefer all the very dark angst in my bro/sis dynamics, so probably not an ideal watch for anyone who prefers their shipcest less complex.

If you do watch, I’d love to hear your thoughts as I think they’re both pretty thought provoking films, especially the complex relationships between the siblings.
