“I had an overall arc that in mind that [JJ Abrams] wanted to do,” Driver continued. “His idea was that [Kylo’s] journey was the opposite journey of Vader, where Vader starts the most confident and the most committed to the dark side. And then by the last movie, he’s the most vulnerable and weak. He wanted to start with the opposite. This character was the most confused and vulnerable, and by the end of the three movies, he would be the most committed to the dark side. I tried to keep that arc in mind, regardless if that wound up not being the journey anyway, because it changed while shooting. But I was still focused on that.”
“The last one, it changed into being, you know, about them and the dyad, and things like that,” Driver said. “And evolving into Ben Solo. That was never a part of it. He was Ben Solo from the beginning, but there was never a version where we’d see Ben Solo when I first signed up for it.”
Daisy Ridley revealed back in 2020 that her character, Rey, started out as having a connection to none other than Obi-Wan Kenobi before she ended up not having any connection to a pre-existing character in “The Last Jedi.” That was then retconned in “The Rise of Skywalker,” when Rey was revealed as a descendant of Emperor Palpatine.
“At the beginning there was toying with like an Obi-Wan connection,” Ridley said at the time. “There were like different versions, and then it really went to that she was no one. Then it came to Episode IX and J.J. pitched me the film and was like, ‘Oh yeah, Palpatine’s grandaughter.” I was like, ‘Awesome!’ Then two weeks later he was like, ‘Oh, we’re not sure.’ So it kept changing. Even as we were filming I wasn’t sure what the answer was going to be.”

adam's inteview on rich ellson show and i feel sorry for adam and do you thougets on star trek movies?
Yes that interview with Adam is interesting. I mean we already knew there was no concrete plan for the sequel trilogy from the start, which isn't necessarily a bad thing - things change and evolve as you write a story (in the original trilogy Vader wasn't originally Luke's father, and Leia wasn't his sister, that was decided later). Adam's performance as Ben and his chemistry with Daisy was so compelling and Rian picked up on that and gave us TLJ! I am forever grateful for that.
But I really thought Ben's redemption was one thing they'd decided on from the beginning. I just find it impossible to believe it wasn't? There were so many hints in TFA alone that was where his story was heading. But I guess none of it was intentional?
Star Wars has always been about redemption and they were really gonna have Han and Leia's son fall to the dark side and never return? That would've been super depressing. As many issues as I have with TROS, at least we did get Ben's redemption and a Reylo kiss.
As for your other question - I've actually never seen any of the Star Trek movies. Been meaning to watch them at some point.

I would prefer never hearing of Ben Solo again than having him return as a Force Ghost.
The concept of the Force Ghost is a weak narrative choice that always feels like an afterthought and has become tacky. The ONLY good force ghost scene with valid reason and dialogue was Yoda in TLJ.
Bring back Ben Solo alive or leave him be.

Holy shit Adam Driver plays piano in SNL monologue. It’s like I need any more reason to melt when I look at him. I have soft spot on men who play piano 🫠

okay but Kola saving Mills not once but twice … KILLED me
#all the reviews are like …. But what was the point#and it’s like. Love???? Understanding ?????? Basic human compassion???????#the dinosaurs barely existed and barely registered in a compelling way but why should that matter#lol#no really. when your story is about adam driver trying to take care of and communicate with a little girl#who doesn’t speak the same language as him and is lost and traumatized#and then in doing so is also cared for#like. the movie is about grief!#and that thread is consistent all the way through. they hit all the beats#and when she reaches for his (ridiculously oversized) hand at the end as they leave earth#it’s just like. right. they made it through#anyway it’s about fathers and daughters#(they kind of low-key didn’t need his real daughter tbh. the story would have worked even more stripped down)#(but as Nina correctly pointed out the audience would not have been able to as comfortably interpret the fact that this relationship#was fathers and daughters#also like !!!!! there were so many real moments#like when she ran back to save the struggling baby dinosaur and he was like NO but then came and helped her anyway#and when she made him put the flower in his hair#and when he was about to drown in quicksand or whatever and she finds the tree branch#they were equally matched and beautifully acted#and the dynamic was inherently father and daughter. and not all the easy parts!!!!!!#when she was scared after being dragged all over the place by that evil dinosaur he had to sit there and wait for her#and draw her out with the sound signal and just. Be patient!#and when she was mad about her grief he had to make himself share his#anyway sorry for all the spoilers it was just good#65#adam driver

I think everyone should keep in mind, too, that Variety is a trade magazine. Yes they sell it on the street and anyone can buy it, but it's a magazine for the industry. They aren't going to focus on fan issues, such as "oh no he was never gonna get a redemption??1!" etc etc, you need to look at what is *actually* being said which is, roughly:
1. The actors were given initial instruction on how to portray their characters, this changed, and no new instruction was ever given. This is Bad Communication With Your Actors.
2. The story became a shitshow of a mess where not even the directors knew what they wanted to do. This trickles down into a Bad Work Environment for everyone else trying to do their jobs on these movies.
3. This was frustrating in particular for the actors who were trying their best to give meaningful performances with either old or zero information.
These should be the actual take-aways, because there is no critique of any film characters here nor should it be interpreted as such, just about Production and how they failed the cast in particular by having zero idea what they wanted to do. I hope you guys can take some comfort in that.

Normally I'd just put this in the tags, but I agree too much with this to put it there. If Lando is your team's number 1 driver and qualifies 5 places behind Oscar, why should he get the preferential strategy? If he qualifies in front, then he gets the preferential strategy. Given the head-to-head stats, that's not often an issue anyway. If one driver is faster than their teammate, the team should also take care to not let them get unnecessarily held up behind if the pace differential is significant.
Andrea saying they don't have a number 1 driver just means they leave the opportunity for fluctuating weekend performance to play a more significant role. Landos not always going to be on it and vice versa. I have my own thoughts and opinions, but Oscar was an entire second slower than Lando at times in Zandvoort just now. They're human sometimes.
When the team starts trying to be so fair that it becomes unfair (e.g., Hungary) that's when you run into issues. But so far that's been the only trip up, so there's no reason to think that's how it's always going to be. I think this is especially evident now that Oscar's won his first race and the team can push that to the side for future decisions like that.
Team orders suck no matter who has them, in my opinion, because if anything's going to diminish a result, it's that.
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/article/2024/aug/26/mclaren-say-they-will-not-favour-lando-norris-over-piastri-despite-f1-title-race
Fuck Andrea Stella
ok i might be in the minority by saying this but i don’t completely disagree with what he said here. i think a lot of people have a bad taste left in their mouth for mclaren with what happened in hungary, and rightfully so, which are causing them to react negatively more so than usual to anything andrea says. personally i don’t want landos first shot of getting a championship to be because team orders were put into place when he has the skill to get there without it, both of landos wins have been down to merit and skill on his part so for people up in arms saying the team should implement team orders for him to win kind of shows a doubt they have in him to me when it’s not been needed for him up until now. andrea also said “We have nine races ahead of us and if we create a No 1 driver what do we do? All the favours to one driver? This is not a healthy way of running a team. For every race we will analyse the situations and in the 50-50 situations, in this case if Lando needs a bit of extra support, we are going to give it to him. But the team includes Oscar, the team should not do things that are not reasonable to Oscar. We are in this together.” like yes as a lando fan do i want lando to be given the best opportunity of winning? yes of course, and andrea says clearly that they will support lando where needed if in with a chance of wdc, but not at the detriment of oscar’s races which is fair imo. i think people fail to realise is that andrea is a team principal and sacrificing one driver for the benefit of another, when the two clearly have a good inter team relationship, and both have long term contracts with the team, could cause that all to crumble and effect the team in a more negative way for the future.
also can we just take a second to imagine the fucking scenes and hate people would give lando, more so than they already do, if he were to win due to team orders i don’t want to have to deal with that.
