also, another note on the use of in-ear monitors and their function, i think it is incredibly impressive if you manage to perform really well and live on stage without wearing them. musical performers do it all the time, by the way, which is why it is the gold standard for performers and a huge honor if an idol is cast in a musical and earns accolades or rave reviews (highlight's yoseob and btob's eunkwang as well as exo's junmyeon are known as very good musical performers). but anyways, i think the one group i will always think of in that regard is actually seventeen. they used to perform clap on music shows without wearing monitors which is crazy considering how tight that choreography is and the sort of vocal gymnastics especially dokyeom and seungkwan had to do. (this performance of clap is done entirely without in-ear monitors except for dk, and in this performance of aju nice! no one is wearing a monitor.) that is something that is very difficult to achieve especially considering just how high seventeen's performance standard is, which is, after all, partly due to the fact that they have gone through stages like this. they simply had to learn how to sing and perform without these monitors and without the advantage of a backing or click track in their ear. seventeen is a group that is as good as they are because they took the time and effort and dedicated themselves to be that way, which is so admirable.

and yes, it sucks when there actually is an in ear malfunction and you cannot hear yourself on stage. in concerts or on music shows there is a crowd and a track or a band that plays simultaneously while you are supposed to sing and if you take out an in-ear due to malfunction, you will be usually attacked by a wall of sound that makes it near impossible to even parse where your voice sits right now. either you are a super solid vocalist or you have to check in manually to see where you at (when you see idols holding their ear closed, it is to listen to the sound of their own voice (usually done when you harmonize with someone but also in cases like these bc lots of different sounds.)) neither of these things are easy. and it takes a lot of hard work for many to even get to the point to hear the discrepancies in your voice and if you are flat/off key, and even then, sometimes it is impossible to tell when all there is is people screaming at you. another factor is the fact that you can decide what channel to raise in your monitor so a singer, for example, will opt to either hear the guitar or the piano louder than the drums or the bass to be on key. because those are usually the instruments that give you musical cues.

that said, if you are a professional singer you should be able to stand on stage and sing and it should sound fine, because that is literally your job and what is expected of you. and i don't think that is too much to ask for.
