The Ward Den 2.0
My version of The Ward Den, Del Sol Valley. I found the original build a bit dull and dark, so I tried to rebuilt it, fitting it better into the surroundings and gave it a bit brighter, and family friendly, interior. It's still lavish and oppulent (I usually don't build in this style) but I think it fits Judith Wards personality. It's a fully furnished, CC free, build.
Main level : double story entry hall, formal living room, formal dining room, large family kitchen with a breakfast nook, lounge, family living room, double story library/office, half bathroom, small bedroom with a full bathroom (ideal for a butler)
Basement : spa/gym/pool, cinema, workshop for skill building, laundry and vault. Plenty space for future expansions
Upper level : master suite (with a dressingroom, full bathroom and balconies), junior master suite (with its own office/dressing, full bathroom and balconies), bedroom (currently dressed as kids room, with a dressing room, full bathroom and balcony)
Gardens : huge deck, pool, sitting areas, barbecue, playground and gardening space.
Lot size : 50x40, designed for the lot that housed The Ward Den in Del Sol Valley
Packs used for the exterior/shell/gardens : Get Famous, High School Years, Cottage Living, Discover University, Get Together, My Wedding Stories and Vampires. Many others for the interior, I used Vintage Glamour, City Living, Decor to the Max and Island Living mostly.

Disappearing Dining Rooms: A Modern Home Design Trend
In recent years, a fascinating shift has been happening in modern home design—traditional dining rooms are disappearing. Once a mainstay in many homes, dining rooms are gradually becoming obsolete, their spaces repurposed to meet evolving needs. This change mirrors broader trends in how we live, eat and connect, and reflects a growing desire for homes that prioritize flexibility, functionality and a casual lifestyle. Let’s explore why dining rooms are vanishing, the trends replacing them and how this shift represents a broader transformation in home design.
The Evolution of the Dining Room
Historically, dining rooms were a symbol of formality. They were spaces specifically dedicated to hosting family meals and entertaining guests. For generations, gathering around a formal dining table was a daily ritual, a moment when families came together, shared stories and enjoyed food in a structured setting. But with each generation, our relationship with home spaces has evolved and so has the way we dine.
Over time, the daily use of the dining room began to decline. Family dynamics changed, work and school schedules grew busier and the traditional sit-down dinner lost its hold as families started prioritizing convenience over formality. By the time the 2000s came around, many dining rooms were being relegated to special occasions or holidays and the rest of the time, these rooms sat unused. This underutilisation prompted many homeowners to consider more practical uses for that valuable square footage.
Why Are Dining Rooms Disappearing?
1. A Shift Toward Casual Living
One of the most significant reasons behind disappearing dining rooms is the shift toward more casual living. Today, families prioritize comfort and convenience over formality and this preference is reflected in our home design choices. People are more inclined to eat wherever they feel comfortable—whether that’s at a kitchen island, a breakfast nook or even the couch. The idea of sitting at a formal table each evening for dinner feels outdated for many.
Furthermore, our culture has shifted toward a more relaxed approach to entertaining. Instead of traditional dinner parties, gatherings today are often more informal, with guests mingling in the kitchen, helping to prepare food, or grabbing plates and eating wherever they find a spot. This fluid, open-ended style of entertaining doesn’t require a separate, dedicated dining space, making the traditional dining room feel redundant.
2. Open Floor Plans
The rise of open floor plans has been a game-changer in residential architecture. In an open layout, the kitchen, living room and dining area flow together in a single, cohesive space. Without walls to separate these areas, homeowners have the freedom to arrange their furniture however they please, allowing for a more seamless, multifunctional layout.
Open floor plans encourage socialization and create a more welcoming, expansive environment. This openness also aligns with modern preferences for natural light and spaciousness. In a home with an open floor plan, a designated dining room can disrupt the flow, creating a spatial imbalance. So, instead of a separate room for dining, a flexible eating area within the open space is often preferred.
3. Space Efficiency and Rising Costs
As housing prices rise and urban areas become denser, many homeowners are forced to prioritize space efficiency. For those living in smaller homes or apartments, having a room dedicated solely to dining is often seen as an unnecessary luxury. Every square foot counts and that space could be better used as a home office, playroom or even an additional bedroom.
Additionally, repurposing the dining room can increase the functionality of a home, maximizing its value. Instead of spending money furnishing and maintaining an underused room, homeowners are opting to put those resources toward multipurpose spaces that serve their needs on a daily basis.
What’s Replacing the Dining Room?
As dining rooms disappear, several design alternatives are emerging to fill the gap. Here’s a look at some of the most popular trends:
1. Multipurpose Rooms
A common trend is transforming the dining room into a multipurpose room that can be adapted to suit various activities. For example, it could serve as a workspace, a reading nook or a place for the kids to do their homework. By creating a flexible, functional space, homeowners can make the most of their square footage and get more use out of the room.
Some people use these multipurpose rooms as "flex rooms" that change depending on the season or event. During the holidays, it may revert to a dining space to host family gatherings, but the rest of the year, it could serve a completely different purpose. Flexibility is key here; rather than being confined to one function, these spaces adapt to meet the family's evolving needs.
2. Eat-In Kitchens
The eat-in kitchen is becoming increasingly popular as a replacement for the traditional dining room. A spacious kitchen island or breakfast bar provides a casual, comfortable setting for meals, offering the same functionality as a dining room without requiring a separate room. Families can eat, chat and enjoy each other’s company while staying close to the heart of the home.
An eat-in kitchen is also practical for busy families. Parents can prepare meals while helping kids with homework or overseeing other activities. The open layout and proximity make it easy to multitask and it fosters a sense of togetherness that is harder to achieve when a meal takes place in a separate dining room.
3. Open Dining Areas
In homes with open floor plans the dining area is often integrated into the larger living space, eliminating the need for a separate room. Instead of being walled off, the dining table is positioned near the kitchen, creating a fluid transition between eating, cooking and living areas. This layout keeps the dining area accessible and functional without occupying an entire room.
Open dining areas can be as stylish as they are practical. Homeowners can incorporate distinctive lighting, art or furniture to create a focal point within the space. By blending the dining area with the living room and kitchen, these open dining spaces offer the best of both worlds—a dedicated spot for meals and the freedom of an open floor plan.
4. Home Offices or Hobby Spaces
With more people working from home, dining rooms are frequently being converted into home offices or hobby spaces. These alternative uses add practical value to the home, providing a designated workspace that can improve productivity and separate professional life from the rest of the household activities. For people who don’t need a home office, the space can also be turned into a studio, craft room or other creative workspace.
This trend underscores the shift toward purpose-driven home design. Homeowners are increasingly tailoring their living spaces to suit their personal interests and lifestyles rather than adhering to traditional home layouts.
Designing a Home for the Way We Live Today
Ultimately, the disappearing dining room trend is about rethinking how we use our living spaces. Modern homeowners are embracing versatility, choosing designs that prioritize functionality and cater to their unique lifestyles. This shift reflects broader changes in how we live—prioritizing shared spaces, opting for less formal dining experiences and maximizing the utility of every square foot.
Today’s home design isn’t about fitting into a mold; it’s about creating a living environment that feels comfortable, functional and reflective of who we are. Dining rooms may be disappearing, but the spaces that replace them offer new ways for families to connect, work, play, and unwind. So, whether you are considering eliminating your dining room or simply rethinking its function, the key is to design a space that enhances your lifestyle. After all, home is where we gather, share, and create memories—no matter which room we choose to do it in.

Babysitting Butcher: Chapter 79
Contrary to popular thought - meaning these lovely thoughts I keep sharing for some reason - I am not out to domesticate all the feral and dangerous men of the world. It just seems to fucking happen to me by accident.
Which is why, even if I felt like I might have been put into some kind of fucked up VR simulation, I chose not to dwell on the severely fucking weird domestic scene that HOMELANDER of all fucking people was taking part in within the hallowed walls of my own fucking house.
It helped that he was always wearing his costume - because at least with the spangles and stars and stripes coating him I could pretend that he was mostly a hallucination brought on by over indulging to the point of brain damage.
The first afternoon and evening was spent with Ryan. I sat on the family room sofa and listened as he explained what he was doing to recreate the film that was playing - one he and his mom had watched before (and while he looked sad at the memory, there was a soft smile there too which I counted as progress) - and before long I was sitting on the floor beside him, letting him guide me as I helped him building his vision.
We took breaks for food - and while I was more than willing to eat outside the kitchen and dining room - I insisted that dinner had to be taken in the kitchen so we could take a true break. I didn’t cook, or didn’t have to depending on the perspective, but I was appeased by the offerings - rather than something that I thought my houseguest might have requested to impress me, the fare was more suited for a family night. Pizza, boneless wings, breadsticks, and other kid friendly - and let’s be honest, Veronica friendly - food was arrayed on the island with a stack of plates and not a single hint of alcohol was to be seen.
“I thought you might want to take a break from -” his breath was warm against my ear and I nearly reminded him that Ryan could hear as well as his huge irritating ass, but I couldn’t really argue the point he was making. Clearly getting buzzed and beyond was a recipe for delusions, so I’d stay sober as the grave.
A slight nod was all I was willing to give him, and once we had our plates full, and were taking our seats at the table in the breakfast nook I realized I had an opening to give as good as I got. Taking note of the plain water Homelander had beside his plate - a plate that he actually managed to fill all by himself - my head tilted and I glanced up to see him watching me.
“Water?” He nodded, reaching for the glass. “Are you sure you don’t want some milk?” He’d started to sip and I was rewarded with a pause - sad that he managed to control himself enough to not snort it, spit it, or worse - shatter the glass with his hand - his eyes didn’t leave mine, and he didn’t bite back the way I wanted him to.
“I prefer fresh milk,” and I was extremely glad I hadn’t picked up a slice or taken a drink from my own glass and I knew he knew it. “After all, why settle for something -” and then he did something worse, he let his eyes take a lingering tour of me from head to toe, the table wasn’t nearly a barrier for his eyes. “Purified or sterilized.” Wait, what?
“Sterilized?” Ryan was looking between the two of us and I turned from his sperm donor to reassure him that - well I had no idea what the fuck I was going to reassure him because I barely opened my mouth when the leader of the Seven answered.
“It means to cleanse,” he offered, and I could feel his eyes still on me. “To clean and purify, and -”
“To not be able to have children,” it slipped out, but if he was saying he preferred things (and since he’d been staring a hole through me, without actually putting a hole through me when he’d said it - people) that hadn’t been - so did that mean -
“Yes,” he agreed, his voice as soft as velvet and more terrifying than if he’d been screaming and foaming at the mouth. “It means being barren or sterile.” I knew he wanted me to engage, but not here, not in front of -
“So tell me,” I was still engaging - or trying to - with Ryan, fuck whatever Homelander was implying right fucking now. “What comes next with your movie prep?”
That’s all it took to take Ryan’s mind off of the topic that my fucking mouth started up. With all the passion a pre-teen could have, Ryan told me what he wanted to do next, and how I could help.
“If you want to,” he tacked on at the end, and if he’d been in the presence of his father for longer - or the man whose name he shared - I would have thought he was using those puppy dog eyes for maximum effect, rather than just a child who was desperate for connection.
“Of course,” the answer was as easy to give as breathing. A throat clearing broke the moment, because of fucking course that throat would fucking break something sweet - well not the throat but the entirety of the throat owner - you fucking know what I mean.
Shooting a look at the source of the interruption, I nearly groaned when I saw the smug smirk growing on his face. Fucker. “While I’m certain Veronica would love to help you with your -” he considered his words with a brief pause and I hoped like fuck that he wasn’t about to make me toss something at his head. “Project. However,” he started before I could chime in and assure Ryan he was right about that. “You should know that she needs to rest -” and he went on even as my mouth opened to protest, I was hungover not fucking dying. “So after dinner, you can go back and start working again, or play some video games that I noticed she so thoughtfully bought in advance of you coming to stay -” dear God he really had been watching everything and had more than enough time to search my house while I was passed out - maybe he was right about the drinking, asshole. “We need to have a private chat,” this was addressed to me, without consulting me about what I wanted, but after his tiny nugget about sterilization I knew he was right about this too, fucking bastard.
Dinner went on like a normal family dinner - if two of the family members were superpowered types and one was a fragile human psychologist/CIA agent who was trying desperately not to diagnose at least one of the other people at the table during its entirety. At the end of it, as I noticed the Vought help come creeping in to clean up after us, I realized that the caped dickhead and I had more to talk about than he realized.

Chic and Beautiful Celebrity Kitchens You Will Love
With beautiful marble islands and amazing decorations, celebrity kitchens are something we all dream of having. Kitchens are often called the hearts of the home, so they are perhaps one of the rooms that shows the most of the owners' personality. There is surely something intriguing about celebrity kitchens, as the design and architectural decisions can speak volumes about the way the owners cook, live and entertain. Kitchen designs can also set the tone for the rest of a home, so celebrities need to be creative in their remodelling choices. Celebrity kitchens can inspire you to create exceptional kitchens and spice up your creativity. So, are you ready to have a party dinner in Julianne Hough’s kitchen, prepare breakfast in Reese Witherspoon's pale blue cooking space or have a coffee in Dakota Johnson's kitchen in Los Angeles? If yes, here are the most beautiful celebrity kitchens you will surely adore. Image source: https://www.freepik.com/free-ai-image/modern-luxury-kitchen-design-with-elegant-wood-material-marble-decoration-generated-by-ai_48646359.htm#query=elegantkitchen&position=13&from_view=search&track=ais Julianne Hough Many people remodel their homes to impress guests and maintain a certain image, but the house of Julianne Hough is truly designed to say something about her personality. Julianne's passion for decoration comes from her childhood when she was thinking all the time about new ways to upgrade her bedroom. All the rooms in her house are amazing, but the kitchen is something absolutely divine. Her cooking space is the best example of using textures and colours in the right ways. She successfully balances the blue kitchen cabinets by using glass panels as doors and tile as backsplash. It is a bold and bright kitchen remodelling idea, but at the same time, it is very airy and light. She has also created an intimate breakfast nook in her kitchen with the help of rattan bistro chairs and a pedestal table. Julianne Hough's kitchen is everything you can dream of. Gordon Ramsay Gordon Ramsay's kitchen is everything you would expect from a world-famous chef. He has multiple ovens, gorgeous oversized cabinets and massive stainless-steel appliances. His cooking space looks like something coming from one of his famous TV shows. Besides being eye-catching, his kitchen is also practical, a must for such a talented cook. He has many sinks, fancy cooking equipment, a huge fridge, and various copper saucepans hanging above his kitchen's island. Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher The architecture and interior of Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis's house are beautiful and modern. They made a bold move in their kitchen by integrating black cabinetry with wood accents. Although the house has a farmhouse sitting, the modern kitchen works somehow with the other details in the house. The pitched roof, exposed beams and the Hector Finch pendants make their kitchen visually appealing. Miley Cyrus Designer Mat Sanders and Tish Cyrus, Miley's mother, were the brains behind the singer's kitchen. The cooking space of Miley Cyrus is a juxtaposition of colours, patterns and design styles. The kitchen has accents of black and white and a sculptural dining table. The accessories in the kitchen are well chosen and stand out in the white cabinetry. Reese Witherspoon Reese Witherspoon is not shy of showing her kitchen on Instagram. And who can blame her if the kitchen looks amazing and anyone would like to sit there? Her cooking space has a lot of things to be admired, but maybe the most beautiful element is her powder blue cabinets. Powder blue kitchens are a current trend, as the colour suggests freedom, sensitivity and imagination. This is why it is a top choice at the moment. The Legally Blonde star has paired the baby blue kitchen units with tiles in a similar shade, creating a soothing and soft cooking space that is truly splendid. Dita Von Teese Dita Von Teese has a retro kitchen best described as eccentric and dramatic. Just by looking at the star's kitchen, you would feel like you have a journey in time. Her cabinetry has a deep green shade that perfectly matches the golden pink elements and tiles of the countertops. The beautiful accents don't stop there, as Dita's ceiling also needs to be admired, as it is dramatically panelled. Her kitchen is glamorous, where the Art Décor meets Tudor style and creates a timeless design. Hilary Duff Hilary Duff's kitchen is an eclectic dream. She has some bohemian blue cabinets that pair well with the white and black tiles. Her kitchen also has golden details, beautiful bar stools, and modern mid-century lamps. The statement of her kitchen is the blue colour and the geometric patterned tiles. Dakota Johnson The home of Dakota Johnson is a beautiful lodge. Her bohemian kitchen has vintage accents with home accessories that vary in design and style. Dakota has a sage green kitchen that is absolutely gorgeous. She has natural elements of wood, touches of crystals and tall windows that bring in the natural light. Sylvester Stallone Sylvester Stallone owned a property in La Quinta, a Coachella Valley Californian city. However, he sold the house for $3.15 million. Unfortunately, with his sale, he said goodbye to the beautiful kitchen of the house. Stallone's kitchen had dark wood cabinetry, a wood and stone centre island and stone floors. The kitchen was created to match the other elements of his Mediterranean-inspired house, which is why the cooking space had a cast iron chandelier, wood carvings and vaulted doors. Final words Celebrities are known for having some of the most outrageously expensive homes equipped with designer finishes and the finest amenities, with the idea of a dream home written all over them. All the rooms of the celebrities' homes are fascinating and gorgeous, but there is something about their cooking space that makes people very curious. Most stars have elaborate designs and unique features in their kitchens that we could stare at all day long. If you want to redecorate your cooking space, it would be a good idea to look at the celebrity kitchens, as they will inspire you. Read the full article

Modern Kitchen Design for Gathering and Socializing
The kitchen has long evolved from a simple utility space into what many families use as an entertaining, living and working area. Whether you’re planning a major kitchen remodel or looking for decor-based ways to make your kitchen more social, here are some great ideas to consider.
A popular kitchen trend is incorporating seating into the design. Adding chairs to a kitchen island or a corner dining nook with a padded banquette can revamp the look of this versatile space.
Design Considerations
The kitchen is no longer a place for tucked away meals. Now, it is a living space for the entire family and guests to enjoy. This is why new design trends incorporate open kitchens connected to the dining and living rooms.
With this new function comes the need for seating in and around the kitchen to encourage interaction and conversation. The addition of bar stools, a comfy couch, or a cozy armchair is the perfect way to provide your family and friends with a relaxing spot to eat, drink or chat with each other while you prepare dinner.
The most important feature to consider for a social kitchen is the layout of your kitchen. We will work with you to create a flow of your kitchen that enables easy movement and provides the best functionality for your needs. We will also consider your personal style and taste to ensure that your kitchen reflects who you are.
Seating
The kitchen is a chameleon of the modern home, evolving into whatever homeowners and families need it to be. Whether that means hosting a cocktail party or a family dinner, it’s important to consider how people will interact with the space in order to create a social hub that is comfortable and welcoming.
Dining tables and seating arrangements play an essential role in any kitchen design. For example, a breakfast bar or stools are a versatile choice for a sociable kitchen as they can offer a casual perch for coffee without blocking the cooking zone. They can also be easily tucked into corner spaces to free up space in the rest of the room.
For this modern eat-in kitchen by GRT Architects, white molded plastic chairs surround a walnut table in a contemporary kitchen. The blond wood furniture and natural wood flooring set off a white and copper island sink and white flat front cabinets. Adding a statement piece of art to the wall adds personality and sets the space apart from the rest of the kitchen.
Lighting
Whether it’s an informal coffee or lunch break, a friendly team meeting, or a productive brainstorming session, social spaces are a great way to build company culture and encourage collaboration. Also referred to as ‘third spaces’, ‘breakout areas’ or WorkCafes, they’re usually less formal than the traditional boardroom and provide employees with a non-hierarchical environment where they can connect on an equal level.
Lighting is a vital element in creating a successful sociable space. It should be designed in layers, providing the room with ambient, task, and accent lighting. This approach helps create a more adaptable and functional design, which is why we recommend using Foyr Neo, our easy-to-use kitchen design software to test out different layouts and see how they look in real life. Foyr Neo lets you create 4K photorealistic renderings in just minutes. Start your free trial today!
Countertops
Whether you’re planning a kitchen remodel or simply looking for decor-based ways to make your kitchen more social space-friendly, the options are endless. Even the most streamlined kitchen can benefit from some extra seating, storage and counter space that encourages family members and guests to hang out and converse.
Add a bench or a banquette seat to your kitchen island, for example, to create a cozy spot where people can comfortably sit and chat while you cook. You can also create a separate zone for seating in the kitchen by adding a built-in booth or a window seat.
Social spaces have many uses, from dedicated lounges and cafe tables in hotels to breakout areas in workplaces that provide a comfortable place for colleagues to gather outside their office, yet still work together. These spots are designed to optimize and promote human interaction, and they can be the perfect spot for a company’s branded digital display.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a kitchen backsplash timeless?
Subway tile backsplash would always be considered timeless. A full-height backsplash is recommended for kitchens. That would mean running the countertop as your backsplash up to the bottom of your upper cabinets. This creates the illusion that your kitchen is larger.
Can you DIY a Kitchen Renovation
If you’re planning a kitchen renovation, you may wonder if you can do it yourself. While the answer is yes, there are some things that you need to keep in mind.
First, a kitchen remodel can be a huge undertaking so ensure you have the necessary time and energy. Before you start, it is important to be proficient in plumbing and carpentry. It is also important to determine which parts of your kitchen you want to improve, such as additional storage, new appliances or lighting.
Once you’ve mapped out your kitchen renovation plan, it’s now time to start looking for materials. You will need to decide on cabinets and countertops, flooring, as well as appliances.
It is a good idea to plan your kitchen layout before you shop. This will help you decide how much space your kitchen needs and what type layout would work best.
When it comes to cabinets, you have many options. There are two types of cabinets available: Ready-to-assemble (RTA), or custom. RTA cabinets can come in different styles and colours. Custom cabinets tend to be more expensive.
You must ensure that you take every precaution to protect yourself and your family before embarking on large-scale renovations. For example, you might want to check the local building codes for renovations.
Although it may seem tempting to handle a large-scale project on your feet, it is best that you seek professional advice. You can save time and money by hiring a professional contractor. Plus, working alongside a professional will ensure that your project runs smoothly.
How can a kitchen redesign affect the home’s market value?
Kitchen renovations can boost your home’s worth by as much as 20%. A major remodel can be expensive, ranging from $40,000 to $150,000. You need to decide how much you can afford and whether you’ll get a return on your investment.
The key to selling your house quickly is choosing a kitchen design you can appeal to many buyers. Stick with neutral colours and classic styles to avoid turning away potential buyers.
If you aren’t planning to sell your home in the near future, you will have more freedom to personalize and customize your kitchen. Consider what you use your kitchen for and how you want it to look and feel. Are you someone who entertains often? Then you may want to consider a layout that allows for plenty of prep space and room for guests. Are you a passionate cook? Do you love to cook?
No matter what kind of plans you have, a kitchen renovation can increase the value and appeal of your house. For the best results, it is important to do your research and find a trustworthy contractor.
Statistics
Your most significant cost investment for a kitchen remodel will usually be cabinets, typically comprising 25 percent of your budget. (hgtv.com)
This is rather grim, but according to Business Insider, 12 percent of couples consider getting a divorce while renovating their home! (familyhandyman.com)
Followed by cabinet cost, labour, and appliance costs consume 20 percent each of your budget. (hgtv.com)
Experts also recommend setting aside 20 percent of your budget for surprises, including unpleasant demolition discoveries. One is water damage, the electricity that is not up to code, or other budget-spiking gotchas. (hgtv.com)
“We decided to strip and refinish our kitchen cabinets during a heat wave with 90-plus-degree temperatures and 90 percent humidity in a house with no air conditioning. (familyhandyman.com)

How To
How do you choose a kitchen remodeling contractor?
These tips can help you make the right choice when hiring a Kitchen Remodel contractor.
Ask around and find out what your friends think about their experiences with different contractors. This is a great way of getting honest feedback from people who have worked with contractors. Ask them about the work quality, professionalism, cleanliness, punctuality, etc. Also, consider asking if they had any problems with the contractor. Do they have any problems with the contractor?
Ask for quotes from different companies. You should be prepared to describe your project in detail and to explain why you would like to hire another company. It’s a good idea to tell them that your search is for someone who has experience in kitchen renovations. You can also provide details about the area, including the type of material used and its size. Make sure you tell them what type of finish you would like (e.g. countertops, cabinets backsplash, flooring). Do not forget to tell them any special requests you have for the project. Do you need new appliances? Do you desire a particular style or type of cabinetry Is there something you’d like to see in your cabinetry, like a built-in wine fridge or microwave oven?
Determine if the company offers worker’s insurance. Online searches will reveal if there are any trade associations. It’s always best to go with a company that is part of a reputable organization.
Talk to the contractor about your project. Ask them about their qualifications, experience, and methods. Find out how they approach your project and what type of timeline they plan to use.
Refer to previous clients for references. Don’t take a contractor’s word for it. Ask for references. Call the people he recommends by going through his references. You can reach them by calling the people he recommends.
You can see past customer reviews on sites such as Yelp, Angie’s List and Houzz. These sites are popular for homeowners who want to leave feedback after they’ve completed projects. If you see positive reviews, it is likely that you will get a high-quality job.
A kitchen designer can help you create a plan to remodel your kitchen. A kitchen designer who has experience will know the best way to design your kitchen. A skilled designer will also know the latest trends in kitchens.

i posted this as part of a reblog on a Batfamily Hanukkah thing, but then I started thinking about a latke night in the Wayne family and got emotional.
In my family, all of us will file into the kitchen for one night and fry up more latkes than a small army could physically eat. And I mean we're using like forty pounds of pounds of potatoes, here. My mom and grandmother are the only ones who know the recipe, and if the rest of us want to learn, we have to memorize it while doing it.
So I'm just imagining the Batfamily's version of Latke night.
When Bruce was young, he didn't make latkes with his family. The Waynes weren't exactly the type of people to spend hours in the kitchen, although Bruce would sometimes sneak in to "help" Alfred. But what they did do was eat them together; In the dining room, the table piled high with crispy golden goodness, applesauce and sour cream, It was one of the few times they could get Alfred to dine with them. Martha would tease him for eating with only the slightest dab of applesauce, Thomas laughing all the while. Bruce loved those nights; more than the sounds of his parents voices as they sung the prayers, more than he loved the games of dreidel or the presents wrapped in silver and blue, he loved that one night of Hanukkah.
But then Bruce's parents died. Murdered, struck down, buried in the very clothes they died in. And when Hanukkah came again, the dining room seemed unbearably empty. There was no Martha to foist sour cream onto Alfred's plate or Thomas to 'accidentally' bite too hard into a jelly doughnut and leave Bruce giggling when the filling smeared on his face. There was no gentle alto or deep baritone to sing alongside the childish tenor, no one to pass the shamash fire to. The very glint of gelt sent Bruce into a panic attack, too close to a different shine in a dark alley, and Alfred hurriedly locked it away in the deepest parts of the pantry.
Alfred stood there, in the doorway of the kitchen, watching as Bruce sat silently at the table, eyes locked unseeing on the wood. He hadn't taken a meal in the dining room since that horrid night, and Alfred hadn't made him. They ate in the kitchen now, in the breakfast nook, Bruce sitting there with Alfred standing by his side, gently coaxing him to take just one more bite, Master Bruce. Just one.
But this was worse, somehow. Because this was Hanukkah, and there should be light and joy and laughter. Instead, there was silence.
Alfred was not Jewish. He grew up with the simple trappings of a passingly Christian family, church on holidays and the occasional Grace said at meals. His experiences with Judaism were superficial, introduced during his time with the Waynes. He did not know the prayers, wouldn't feel right saying them even if he did; he wouldn't feel confident lighting the large oil menorah in the front window, nor the small personal ones in the family sitting room.
But Alfred did know how to cook. He knew how to cook latkes. It was just like any other recipe he had learned to cater to the tastes of his charges, although the ingredients and preparation of these were, perhaps, more carefully handled than most other recipes. The ingredients were tucked away in the pantry behind him, delivered on the first night of Hanukkah just as they were every year. He didn't know if it would cheer or depress the young master, but he couldn't bring himself to throw them out.
But Alfred remembered a young boy who so desperately wanted to help, who slipped into the kitchen with light in his eyes and giggled when Alfred let him steal some of the crunchy bits that had fallen off the edges. Alfred relied on that memory as he prodded Bruce from his chair, to the kitchen island, into one of the stools there. He placed a bowl of matzo on the counter before him, handed him a pestle, and told him to crush (Alfred had always done this the traditional way, and he could not pass much on, but this. This was something he could).
They spent the day making latkes. Piles upon piles, just for the two of them. Bruce was just as bad at it as he was with stars in his eyes, and he was not talking by the end of it, but he was smiling, and the sight could bring Alfred to tears.
It became their new tradition. Year after year, no matter how far Bruce pushed him away or how far Alfred let him, they stood in the kitchen with oil frying in the pan and bowls of shredded potatoes on the counter. And then Bruce grew, grew tall and strong and into an unspeakably stupid crusade (may their memory be a blessing, he remembered hearing at the funeral, and he suspected Master Bruce forgot that it was blessing, not curse. He didn’t think Bruce would ever be ready to hear the difference).
And one day, there was another little boy haunting the hallways of the manor, grieving for parents he should have outlived.
This one was not Jewish. He remembered Christmas spent with the circus, how the big top looked strung up with lights, the taste of gingerbread and cranberries. But when winter crept in and the city of Gotham lit up with red and green and sparkling tinsel, Dick got quiet. Dick got still. He did not want to celebrate Christmas, that year.
But Bruce remembered a day in the kitchen, his heart bleeding out over the wood of the table, remembered Alfred standing in the corner. He remembered the crackling of oil and the smell that lingered for days. Remembered a bowl of potatoes, of apples, of onions, a cup of salt, pepper and baking soda. A carton of eggs. He remembered a bowl of matzo. He remembered not feeling alone.
Bruce was just as useless in the kitchen as ever, but Alfred was not, and the three of them crowded around the island together, oil heavy in the air. Dick was not terribly better in the kitchen than Bruce, but they listened to Alfred's directions very carefully, and they managed. He was talking, by the end of it, babbling a mile a minute, and Bruce could have cried.
Years later, when Dick was off in Blüdhaven, grown tall and strong and angry and hurt, there came another young boy. That one was not fresh off of some tragedy (he had lost early and often), but he was fresh off the streets. Scared and too-skinny, he had only just begun to trust them, so many months into his stay. He wasn't Jewish, either, wasn't really anything; Jason Todd, growing up, had never had the time or the money to be worrying about things like holidays or prayers.
But when Bruce brought him to the kitchen, oil heavy in the air, Jason smiled. He took to the task like a duck to water; Alfred even trusted him to fry a few (under close supervision and with a splatter guard, but it was more than anyone else had managed). Bruce, standing with his apple corer and bowl of sliced potatoes, just shook his head and laughed. Even after all these years, he never managed to get near the oil without burning himself.
Dick showed up. Late, but he showed. He flicked matzo mush at Jason, and then they were chasing each other around the kitchen, laughing and breathless and making a mess of things, crumbs and sodden bread spilling across the floor, the counters, some of the walls. It was the one year they used flour, instead.
But then Jason died (buried in a shiny new suit, because Jason Todd-Wayne couldn’t be buried in Robin's uniform. Bruce was unsure if he would even want to. He kept the uniform safe, anyway, and did not touch the blood). Jason died, and then there was a third young boy in the manor. This one was not mourning; this one had never had enough to mourn. He was well taken care of, never wanted for food or clothes or shelter, for the very best that money could buy, and if money could not buy it, it was nowhere to be found.
Unlike the others, Tim Drake was Jewish, but only in the same way he was a Drake—in name and vague, flickering memories of warmth and fire and songs that had faded with memory and never renewed, until he forgot he was never supposed to be cold. He haunted the manor; not like Dick so many years before him, not like Bruce, like the ghosts of Martha and Thomas and Jason. Tim slipped down hallways like he expected no one to see him, for touch to slip through him like vapor. Tim walked like he forgot there were people living there, and that he was one of them.
Tim Drake was lonely. Tim Drake was alone. But Alfred remembered a lonely young boy haunting an empty manor; Bruce remembered an acrobat wilting at the sight of christmas lights; Dick remembered a little brother at the stove with his tongue sticking out, matzo and onion on his cheek.
Bruce had to herd Tim into the kitchen. When he saw what it was, when he saw Dick and Alfred waiting with bowls of potatoes, apples and onions covering the island, salt and pepper and eggs and baking soda—he stiffened. It was a family tradition, and he did not think he counted. Alfred sat him down at the counter with a bowl full of matzo, and told him to start crushing.
Tim had never made latkes before, and after the third time he almost crushed his own hand, they decided that was probably for the best. Dick chased him across the kitchen, matzo crumbs in his hair and a fistfull of potatoes in one hand. Tim laughed by the end of it, and the three of them blinked away tears.
Later, when they filed into the sitting room, there was a second menorah waiting for them. This one was new, bright silver instead of shiny gold, and Bruce guided him to it with a warm hand on his shoulder. He handed Tim the candles, helped him melt the bottoms so they would stay in place. And when the prayers rose through the room, it was a slow, dark baritone that sung them, an adolescent tenor following close behind.
Steph invited herself to latke night, the first year they knew her; they sent her home with more food than she could reasonably eat in a year. Cassandra showed up shortly after, and spent her first latke night stealing the crunchy bits off the closest platter, instructions lost to the language barrier. Not that anyone minded, really—It was nice to have more mouths to feed, and they were family, even if one wasn't official.
And then there was a day, an old flame, a league of assassins, and a child who looked so much like Bruce it hurt. There was a child, ten years old and terrified, arrogant, desperate. Bruce didn't remember another boy like that (Alfred did).
They clashed, immediately; Damian had been fed stories and expectations of his father since he was old enough to hear it, and Bruce never, ever wanted to live up to them. They snarled and misunderstood each other, over and over and over again.
Damian al Ghul was not Jewish, barely knew what the word meant. He had grown up knowing very little actually information about his father, and the menorah on the mantle was as unfamiliar to him as the man himself.
But Bruce did remember a young man, angry and surly and traveling across the world in search of something. Bruce remembered a complex of shadows. Remembered losing himself. Remembered coming back
Bruce dragged a surly Damian into the kitchen, placed him in front of a bowl of fresh matzo, and told him to start crushing. By the end of it, there were only three minor stab wounds, but Damian had stopped frowning. Bruce could have cried in relief.
Later still there came Duke, grief ridden for parents that still breathed, who went willingly to the kitchen and mixed ingredients with steady determination. He joked by the end of it, and the rest of the family could have ridden that high for the rest of time.
Eventually, there came Barbara and Jim (who's shield of plausible deniability had worn thin), and then Jason, again, and the kitchen was a mess of bodies and laughter and spilled ingredients. Alfred and Jason were still the only ones trusted to fry, although Dick could manage a batch or two before surrendering, unwilling to tempt fate.
Someone still managed to burn themselves. Every Goddamn. Year.

~~~
Rosé hates that he comes home late during choreography days.
He’s never really been one to complain about work hours and rehearsing well past his schedule, if anything he’s happy he has a show to sustain him and his partners for a solid couple of months. But now that there’s always someone waiting for him to come home, he guesses that’s why his feelings toward it have suddenly changed.
He leans against the counter as he waits for the dinner plate Denali had set aside for him to finish heating up in the microwave, tired eyes scanning their living area just across the island counter and dining table. A grimace paints his lips as he catches sight of unfolded fleece blankets and a handful of toys strewn across the living room carpet, making a mental note to tell his partners about cleaning up before bed to ‘lead by example’ or whatever. He saw an article about it on those parenting sites he finds himself frequenting recently.
The beeping of the microwave rings in Rosé’s ear before he turns to take his dinner out, grabbing utensils and a glass of water before setting it on the breakfast nook and making himself comfortable, pulling his phone out from his pocket to keep himself company as he eats.
He makes sure his actions are quiet, each clank of his metal fork against the porcelain plate muted and careful. The walls in this apartment are too thin for him to assume that Rowan (the lightest sleeper he’s ever met in his life) can’t hear the sounds that accompany his every move. Every now and then his gaze shifts to catch a glimpse of her door well-decorated with stickers Mik got her during one of his frequent trips to LA, silently hoping for the silver doorknob to turn and reveal that she had been waiting for him to come back like she used to the first couple of nights with him. He remembers the tear-stained cheeks and bloodshot eyes sitting by the front door and refusing to go to bed without greeting him a proper goodnight. The memory makes him smile, it always does. Rowan always makes him smile.
Rosé sets down the plate on the kitchen sink before walking over to Ro’s room, wincing at the slight creaking of the floorboards that greets him as he walks in. He holds back a yawn as he inches closer to her bed, arms reaching out to pull the comforter over her body when he sees the stain of tears on her pillowcase.
The stain is fresh, and Rosé feels his heart tighten in his chest. He leans in slowly, catching sight of her furrowed eyebrows, the edges of her lips turned down into a frown as quiet sniffles bounce lightly against the thin walls of her bedroom. Her arms wrap tighter around the pillow in her arms, and the mere sight of his baby in any sort of distress is all it takes for him to gently shake her awake.
“Ro? Baby-” He whispers, running a hand through tangled hair as he rubs her forearm to try and wake her up. He sees her writhe under his touch and when her eyes jolt open, the cries that erupt soon after urge Rosé to pull her out of bed and into a hug.
He rubs her back as he stands back up, rocking her back and forth in his arms as he lets her cry it out into his shoulder and onto his shirt. Her wails are loud and drown out any other sound that dares to compete with his daughter’s painful sobs, holding her tighter as hiccups start to accompany her cries. He attempts to soothe her through by holding her as close as he can, whispering reassuring words in her ear and pressing soft kisses on her temple until the ear-piercing wails slowly turn into hushed sniffles.
“What happened baby?” Rosé pulls away to take a look at his daughter’s face, free hand reaching up to push away stray hairs damp with tears.
“Nightmare.” She manages to sputter out in between her hiccups, frail arms wrapped tight around her dad’s shoulders tightening its grip around him as she breaks eye contact with him to lay on his shoulder once again. “You didn’t come home.”
He doesn’t understand how four words could sting him that much, but they do. The second it dawns on him just how much it probably meant to her that he got home safe, it takes all of him not to cry with her then and there. His heart breaks into a million little pieces when he feels her hug him a little tighter than she usually does, so he leans into the hug with just as much love.
“Oh baby,” He coos, running a hand through her hair and continuing to rock her in his arms. “I’ll always come home, I promise.”
They lie in the soothing silence for a few more minutes, filling the quiet atmosphere with soft hums of a lullaby Rosé knew helped put her to bed. He feels her breath slow down after a while, the continuous tears that ran down Rowan’s cheeks finally coming to a stop. It takes all of his body control to gently set her back down on her bed and pull the polkadot covers over her body, a small smile painting his lips as he watches her sleep for a few moments before leaning in to press a soft kiss on her forehead.
“I’m not going anywhere angel.” He whispers, pressing one more kiss onto his daughter’s temple before standing back up.
Rosé turns to the door to find Mik leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed over his bare chest and the genuine gaze of blue eyes going back and forth between him and Rowan.
“You gotta get the kid a nightlight or something. Nali had to get in bed with her to get her to fall asleep, she was so scared.” Mik whispers the moment the brunette shuts the door to Rowan’s room. The younger wraps his arms around him to pull him into a quick kiss, Rosé’s hands drifting down to his waist as he leans in for one more.
“I know.” Rosé sighs as he pulls away, turning his head to cover the yawn that escapes his lips. “God, I really gotta get home earlier.”
“She just wants to know you’re okay.” Mik reasons with him, and Rosé knows he’s right. It’s surprising that somehow he always is.
“Okay let's get you to bed, you look exhausted.” Mik smiles, hand trailing down to intertwine his fingers with the blonde's. He leans back up to press a kiss on Rosé’s cheek. “Nali is fucking snoring, by the way.”
“Oh my god, of course he is.”
Hi! I’ve been reading some of your Wanda & Vision mixtape series and after the season final, I HIGHLY recommend giving “Our Corner of the Universe” by K. S. Rhoads a listen! I think your series is such a great idea and it’s so well written; warm without being cheesy.
You seriously are trying to break my heart with this song - I'd never thought about listening to it in the context of Wanda and Vision but boy once I did my heart was in pieces. Anyway! I hope you like where I went with this.
track #8 of Wanda and Vision’s Mixtape ~ Our corner of the universe
Synopsis: In which Wanda and Vision are coming to the end of a few weeks together in Paris pre-IW and Wanda dreams a life for them where they no longer have to run and hide. Unknowingly, she draws Vision into her dream and they both must contend with the idea that this reality isn't something that will be easy for them.
Paris had grown colder in the last few days, as though the city knew the time was coming when Vision would have to leave. The sun had disappeared early that morning behind a cover of clouds that had seen the day through until sunset, leaving a soft rain to patter against the glass French doors. They were huddled in bed now, Vision tracing soft patterns about Wanda’s back as he watched the rain drizzle down the glass.
“Tomorrow is too soon,” she whispered, her head shifting slightly from where it was resting atop his chest.
“I know,” he murmured into her hair, kissing the top of her head affectionately.
“One day we won’t run like this,” Wanda said looking up into his eyes and Vision tried to smile. Normally he was more hopeful, but it was now coming to the end of their second year of meeting up like this and it was difficult to see a future where they could be else. Of a time when they might have a life together that was more than stolen moments in distant cities.
“One day we’ll be able to live together in one place, we’ll have neighbours and friends, we won’t have to hide.”
“I hope so, my love,” Vision said opening his arms wider as Wanda got under the dark bed covers for the evening. Once she was settled, he slid off the bed and went about turning the lights out and checking the doors were locked. It was routine for them now. Once Vision was sure that everything was safely locked up, he joined Wanda, pulling a blanket from the foot of the bed atop the covers for added warmth.
Wanda shuffled closer to him as he lay down beside her and he opened his arms for her to rest atop his chest once more. They were often inseparable like this on the last night, needing the physical connection of each other to remind themselves to be present in the moment and not spend their precious hours dreading the coming morning.
Vision ran his fingers through Wanda’s hair in calming motions as her breath slowed. Eventually he stilled and started to drift off himself, into the version of sleep that his synthezoid body demanded.
Neither of them was conscious when Wanda’s hand twitched atop Vision’s chest, red mist forming before dissipating in the air between them.
Vision didn’t dream. It wasn’t that he couldn’t, if he really wanted to his synthetic brain could replicate something close to the dreamlike state that humans experienced. But he generally preferred the endless quiet that came with his brain’s resting state. The chance for stillness, even for a few hours, was a relief. Perhaps there was an element of self-preservation to it, the fear that Wanda would be caught and that he would have to watch her be imprisoned once more haunted his waking hours enough, he would rather not be consumed by the same thoughts at night.
So it came as something of a surprise when Vision found himself opening his eyes to warm sunlight, despite his brain reminding him that he was indeed, still resting. It disconcerting trying to reconcile his physical form, which remained in the Parisian apartment in bed beside Wanda, and his mental form currently cast in sunlight somewhere, somewhen, else.
Judging from the light streaming through the four paned windows opposite his face, it was early morning, where though, he couldn’t tell. Slowly, Vision rolled over and came face to face with the peaceful, sleeping face of his partner. She sighed softly and shifted closer to him.
“Go back to sleep, it’s too early,” she whispered to him.
“It’s night-time,” Vision said in confusion.
Wanda’s eyes opened and she scrunched her nose up at him. “Just a few more minutes.”
This put him at ease, it was exactly what his Wanda said most mornings. “Of course, a few more minutes,” he said, and Wanda sighed happily, moving closer to rest her head upon his shoulder like a pillow.
“We should stay like this forever.”
Vision smiled and his eyes drifted closed against the sun, wishing that every morning might be like this.
He started when he suddenly found himself standing in an unfamiliar living room. It was a cosy space, mostly occupied by a large red couch and a collection of armchairs assembled around a flat screen television. He spun on the spot looking around for Wanda.
“Vis? Is that you?” Came Wanda’s disembodied voice and Vision followed it through the next room into a quaint kitchen complete with cluttered island and wooden dining table.
“Darling?” Vision said hesitantly, closing the kitchen door behind him. “What’s going on?”
“I just wanted to make sure that your evening is free for next Friday, we’ve been invited to dinner,” Wanda said running her fingers atop a calendar and marking a square with a black marker.
She was dreaming, that much he was now sure of. This strange transition to what appeared to be a few hours later was the most obvious indicator. Not to mention the haze like state of their surroundings, as though the interior designer had given up halfway through the décor process. Kitchen tiles faded off into exposed wall, there were two clocks hanging above the sink ticking in opposite directions, and though there were cookbooks sitting on the kitchen island, when Vision tried to make sense of their titles, he found he couldn’t read any of them.
He’d talked with Wanda about what kind of house that she would like one day, but that had been a while ago and he’d been hesitant to add himself to that image. Now here he was in her dreamscape, in a made-up house that they appeared to live in, together.
“So that is a yes for you next Friday?” Wanda said absentmindedly as she began to move around the kitchen assembling a breakfast of scrambled eggs and bacon.
“Yes,” Vision said, deciding it was best to play along, distantly recalling that it wasn’t a good idea to wake sleepwalkers. He didn’t want to give Wanda a fright or force her into a lucid dream state. Instead he watched in wonder as she continued to navigate the space with ease, her hands finding the cupboard with the saucepans and the cutlery drawer without hesitation, it was fascinating to watch. He wasn’t entirely sure how Wanda had drawn him into her dream, but for now he was content to observe.
“I was thinking of making Paprikash to take, what do you think?” Wanda asked as she brought her meal to the table and gestured for him to join her.
“I think—” Vision began, watching her smile up at him as he hovered about the table. “I think that is a wonderful idea.”
“I’m glad you think so,” she said grinning and taking a napkin from a pile on the table, “perhaps I can teach you how to make it properly?”
“I’d love that,” he replied, thinking tenderly of his pathetic first attempt at the dish all those years earlier. Back when he’d been a lovestruck being, not entirely capable of processing the wave of feelings he got every time she was near. He supposed not much had changed, if anything the feelings had grown more intense.
Before Vision had time to further dissect the space about them, the scene changed yet again and he found himself standing in a park whose grass was slightly too green, the colours of the playground a little too bright. The colours lost their saturation around the corners of his view, as though the paintbrush had run out of paint for the edges.
Vision instead turned his attention to the woman walking beside him, her arm tucked into the nook of his elbow as they strolled through the park. He was distinctly aware of Wanda chattering away about their imaginary schedule for the weekend, suggesting a movie the following day at the outdoor cinema with their neighbours and reminding him of the community meeting the following Wednesday.
He smiled softly and listened to her creating this life for them, wishing it into existence. He was content to just hear her speak, to gain this glimpse into a future they clearly both wanted, even if it was just a dream for the time being. It reignited his desire to fight for a shared life with Wanda. The running and hiding had been wearing them both down recently, but it humbled his despair to know that Wanda still longed for this version of life. It made him want to do as much as he could to get them something close to this life.
Vision turned his face to the sun as they walked, relishing in its warmth as glimpses of light made it through the greenery above them. Her hand was a constant on his arm, her voice in his head telling him of all they both wished for, birds providing a background chorus.
His eyes opened once more, smiling as he turned his head to look at Wanda. It took a moment to realise this wasn’t part of the dream, that he had returned to their current reality once more.
It was still dark outside and for a brief moment his heart held onto the hope that time had paused while they dreamt, that it was still evening, but a glance to the digital clock on their bedside table told Vision it was nearing 7am. He was due to get the train at 10am.
Wanda was still curled against his side, her breathing slow and steady, one hand had reached across the covers as they slept, reaching for him. He took it rubbing her cold fingers to warm them up. As he did so, she stirred beside him.
“Wanda,” he murmured to the morning air, brushing her hair off her cheek with gentle touches.
“No,” she whispered back, scrunching her eyes closed causing little tears to leak from the corners. “I didn’t want to wake up.”
“I know,” he said.
“I wanted to stay there.”
“One day.”
Wanda opened her eyes at this and looked up at him, her questions clear. He smiled tightly at her but was sure it came across as something closer to a grimace. Understanding reached her eyes and he nodded sadly, confirming that he’d seen it all too.
“One day,” he repeated, like a promise and she slid her arms around his waist in answer, pulling herself closer to his warmth.
They held each other for as long as they could afford before knowing that they had no other choice than to get ready for their respective departures. With their bags packed, Vision set about making a quick breakfast for Wanda, the same scrambled eggs and bacon she’d made in her dream world. She stayed pressed to his back, her arms wrapped around his waist, as though afraid he’d disappear like her dreams.
At the station they waited at the platform as the train pulled in. Vision hated this part the most, hated that he had to be the one to turn his back first, but Wanda never told him where she was going next, it was to protect them both.
“We will find a way to that home,” he whispered at her ear as they hugged one last time.
“You really think we could have that?” she asked, voicing the question they both seemed too scared to ask all morning.
“I promise to you,” he said holding her hands tightly between them, “that I will do everything in my power to make that life for us.”
She smiled and leant forward to kiss him one more time.
“Travel safe,”
“And you,”
And Vision was leaving again, not knowing when they’d next be able to meet up, or for how long. At least some of his hopelessness had turned to hope in the last few hours, reignited by the knowledge that she longed for the same life he did. Doubt was always following him, and he’d started to wonder if he’d been overstepping where they were at in their relationship, but he could no longer ignore how right it had felt. They’d find a way to that corner of the universe, one day.
Inside Johnny Depp and Y/N Y/L/N’s Stunning $1.9M New Orleans Home! - Article by Rita Joseph, November 2018
A casually dressed Y/N opens the door on a bright and sunny but chilly Friday afternoon. The Golden Globe nominated actress is just as stunning makeup free and in an old college sweatshirt and jeans and her hair pulled back from her face as she is in expensive designer gowns and jewelry; right behind her is her husband Johnny Depp and their dog Jack Sparrow. “Hey, come on in!” Immediately, I’m greeted with warmth and the scent of cinnamon. The entrance is narrow, and there is a wooden table next to the door with a small bowl which hold two sets of car keys, but there are two doorways across from each other: on the left is the sitting room, and on my right is the dining room with its painted blue walls contrasted with white curtains and a chandelier hanging above the table.
We start with the sitting room which holds a lime green couch adding a nice touch of color against the white walls. There is also a gold ceiling lamp and a glass coffee table. “This is our sitting room, but we use it for a little bit of everything, like a storage room or sometimes a guest would want to sleep in here when they visit because it’s so quiet as opposed to upstairs because we still have teenagers, and there’s a lot of banging around in the morning getting ready for school, or we’ll have friends over.” Those friends would include Brad and Angelina (before the divorce), Tim Burton and Eva Green, Helena Bonham Carter, and Depp’s Hollywood Vampires band mates Joe Perry and Alice Cooper. What great company to keep!
From the sitting room we head into the dining room. “We actually painted the dining room a week after we moved in. All of the walls in the house were white and we thought it was way too much, so we decided to paint it a different color,” Depp said. “The tables and chairs actually belonged to Y/N’s sister and we bought it off her in ‘07 when she moved to another city, and that couch in the other room we bought after Nathan and Noelle’s first birthday.” “It was their favorite thing to play on when they were babies. So hard to believe that was 2004,” Y/L/N reminisced. The blue walls are decorated with a few of Depp’s paintings with a molding of a deer’s head that Y/N got at a flea market.
As we exit out of the dining room, I get a good look at the other side of the wall facing the staircase as we go into the living room. The entire wall is covered in a black and white photo of a jazz band taken at a Mardi Gras parade a few years ago, and there is a nice sized wine cabinet which is the size of a recording booth with only one bottle of wine in it; Johnny has cut back on drinking, but still enjoys a glass of wine every now and then. “I’m not as young as I used to be, and I’m runnin’ around on stage all night so I want to be as healthy as possible when I’m performing and to see the rest of my babies grow up.” The rest of his babies would be Nathan and Noelle, fraternal twins born in 2003. Their oldest kids include 26-year-old Star Wars star John Christopher III, born in 1992, and 22-year-old The Greatest Showman actress Camille.
The living room is gorgeous but simple; an all white leather reclining sectional with built in cup holders surrounds a small wooden coffee table in front of the fireplace which has a flat screen television above it. There’s a chandelier in this room as well, similar to the one in the dining room, and the wooden table behind the sectional breaks up the whiteness of the room. “This is where everyone spends the majority of their time. Morning, noon, night, weekends, we are here, with the older kids when they come over for dinner on Sundays. They’ll come over in the afternoon and stay the whole day.” Even with the oldest kids moved out and with houses of their own, the Depps are still a close knit family with Camille and John Christopher, or Three as he’s called by friends and family, living minutes away. Depp family favorite weekend activity? “Cooking breakfast together and then going to the nearby park or to a flea market or farmers’ market. There’s always something to do do in the city so you’re never bored,” the Dark Shadows actor explained.
When I asked them why they decided to move away from Hollywood, it was an easy answer. Y/L/N said: “we wanted to give them a normal childhood, and you can’t really have that when there are people taking pictures of you in your school uniform heading into school.” The couple moved to the Big Easy before Johnny began filming the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie in 2002, and speaking of cooking, the kitchen is next, and it is every homeowner’s dream. The white marble kitchen island doubles as a sink with its clear backed chairs and a sleek gold light fixture hanging above. A few feet away is a rectangular table with four shelves.
“This is my favorite room. I’m always cooking, and this is pretty much multipurpose room. We do game nights, eat meals, the twins do homework here.” When I joked about the chandeliers, the two only laughed, with Y/N adding, “you’re gonna be seeing a lot of chandeliers in this house. I loved them as a child and always wanted one. Or thirteen. We actually got each of them at Home Depot or Wayfair, and they look good in every room.” At this point, Jack Sparrow begins barking and runs to the front door (the dog, not Depp who plays the beloved swashbuckler). Noelle and Nathan are home from school and they follow the dog into the kitchen.
They are taken aback as they take in the camera man, as they wash their hands in the sink before reaching for the snacks. “Oh, I thought this was happening tomorrow,” Noelle remarks as she reaches for a bag of trail mix from a cabinet and a bottle of water from the fridge. “You have drivers ed tomorrow,” Y/N instantly in mom mode. “And your uniforms are hanging up in the laundry room.” Johnny and Y/N are athlete parents with Nathan playing on his school football team while Noelle is a cheerleader. After getting an okay from the twins to tour their rooms, we head upstairs after the examining the wall of pictures in the upstairs hallway.
Some pictures that have never been made public: a tired looking Y/N in a hospital bed after giving birth to their children, followed by a procession of school portraits and certificates from school. John Christopher and Camille’s graduation and prom pictures. Family outings at the near by park which featured a heavily pregnant Y/N circa early 2000s. A picture of Depp’s late mother Betty Sue and Y/N’s Aunt Claudia smiling as they played cards. And then there were the family portraits.
One that started with John Christopher as a newborn in 1992, then adding Camille in 1996, followed by the twins in 2003. Black and white photos of grandparents and great-grandparents, photos of Depp and Y/L/N ancestors, and the framed Polaroids of Y/N and Depp in Vegas on their honeymoon, after they eloped in summer 1991 after less than a year of dating, and I had to ask the question that’s still on peoples’ minds years later: why elopement? “We were young and didn’t want to go through the process of planning a wedding. I proposed a day after meeting her aunt and uncle and two days later we were married.” You remember that day like it was yesterday; you and Johnny went on vacation to visit your aunt and uncle so they could meet him for the first time as your boyfriend. They loved him, of course and at that point, you’ve only been dating for four months and it was getting serious to the point where Johnny called you his future wife and mother of his children in interviews (which probably wouldn’t be too distant in the future since your period was late). He proposed the night before you left for L.A. after your aunt and uncle had gone to bed and you immediately said yes.
After settling back home, you two took a road trip to Las Vegas the very next day and twenty seven years later, you’re still very much in love. I asked them why move to New Orleans, to which Depp answered: “Y/N was filming a movie here after Three was born, and when I came to visit her with the baby, I think it was during Mardi Gras, we had an amazing time. The food was just incredible, and the people were amazing, and no one gave a fuck about who we were. Once Camille was born, we kept coming back as much as we could, and we decided we wanted to build a life here.” The first room we enter after reaching the landing is the master bedroom. The walls are painted a nice gray, and, you guessed it, a chandelier. “This is our room, where we rarely get any sleep because we have the kids always running in and out for whatever reason--”
“And we also climb into bed with them too,” Noelle interjects. “And other times we just do it to annoy them,” Nathan backs up his sister’s statement. The bathroom is gorgeous with a white tiled floor; the shower stall is in a corner next to Y/N’s vanity, and across from it is a jacuzzi tub set next to a window that had a few candles along the edge, and adjacent from the tub is a double sink. “This is our bathroom, and we do more unwinding here than the bedroom. Whenever one of us comes home from filming or press tours or whatever, we’re in the tub, probably falling asleep.” Next we move to Noelle’s room and it’s something out of a Pintrest board
Pretty pastel pinks and fluffy white rugs and throws with a nice swing chair in a corner, which she calls her reading nook. Black and white framed pictures of her mom from her modeling days as a teenager and pictures of friends and family fill in space on her walls. “Every piece of furniture came from either Wayfair or Overstock. They have such great deals on furniture and rugs, and I’m always scrolling through their websites.” Nathan’s room is a typical boy’s room. It’s a cool gray scale vibe with a portion of the wall behind his bed painted black and there are shelves on either side of the bed filled with books, picture frames and sports trophies. “Dad and I repainted this wall almost a month ago. The sun shines so bright in the mornings and it’s always a pain, and I love when a room is cold and dark.”
He admits to sleeping with the fan on at night, even in the winter. There’s a sleek desk in the corner that holds a laptop and a stack of books, and next to it, against the wall, is a decent sized book shelf. Nathan likes to read, a trait that he and the rest of his siblings picked up from their parents. He and Noelle are having a competition to see who could read the most books by the end of the year. The next room is a low ceilinged guest room which is where Depp’s mother Betty Sue lived her last days.
“This used to be Grandma Betty’s room. Jack comes in here all the time, and we’d find him just laying on the bed,” Nathan says, touching a portrait of his grandmother. The next room is pretty much a music studio, as there’s a drum kit, bass guitars, electric guitars, and a keyboard. The walls are covered with the kids’ school art projects over the years. The room is frequented by Depp’s band the Hollywood Vampires whenever they blow into town, where they write and record new music, and Noelle receives guitar lessons from her father and Cooper. The last room we reach is a game room/homemade home movie theater.
There’s a nice flat screen on the wall and plastic storage bins containing video games, game controllers, and DVDs; Noelle used the room to host a sleepover a few weeks ago, and Nathan and his friends used it to launch water balloons at the neighborhood boys during the summer, which he realizes he makes a mistake in admitting this in front of his parents. Finally we come to the last part of the tour, the backyard which holds a patio and a swimming pool. “I know it doesn’t feel like it now, but we were using the pool up until a week ago. During the spring and summer months, we’ll invite the neighbors over for barbecues or they’ll invite us.” It’s November, and Thanksgiving is a week away. The entire Depp family plans on spending the holiday at the Kentucky ranch Johnny bought for his mother with his siblings. Before we leave, Y/N offers me and the camera man Justin a snack of green tea and cinnamon rolls ushering us politely out of the door so they could have dinner and get ready for Nathan’s game.
The video is now up on architecturaldigest.com and on our YouTube channel.
Enhance Socializing With Open and Inviting Kitchen Renovation Ideas
When family and friends come over, your confined kitchen can make the gathering feel awkward. A rework can transform it into an open-concept design that can host everyone from kids to grandparents comfortably.
Consider removing non-load-bearing walls that divide your kitchen from the dining or living room. This will give you a space that is ideal for spending quality time with loved ones!
Create a Breakfast Nook
If you’ve double-tapped photos of breakfast nooks on Instagram but thought that adding a dining area to your kitchen would require a pricey renovation, think again. Creating a cozy eating space can be done by tucking a table and chairs into an empty corner or utilizing an existing bay window.
Small breakfast nooks work best in spaces adjacent to your kitchen, where diners can easily keep out of the cook’s way and enjoy conversation over coffee or casual meals. Use a neutral color palette to create an open and airy look, or add eye-catching wallpaper for drama.
If you’re a fan of artisanal interior design, try mixing vintage pieces with modern furniture for a one-of-a-kind style. Textural accent walls can also add dimension to a breakfast nook, creating a sense of depth and making your space feel larger.
Add a Bar or Drink Cart
When guests arrive, a bar or drink cart makes it easy for them to grab drinks and snacks without getting in your cook’s way. You can create one by adding a freestanding shelf to your kitchen that houses drinkware, food items, and coffee essentials. This is especially beneficial in smaller homes where a full kitchen island isn’t feasible.
If you have the space, a cozy banquette can be a nice spot to sit and talk with family or friends. It will also make the room feel complete and integrated into the rest of your home.
When selecting materials for your new kitchen, consider ones that are durable and will stand up to wear and tear from family members and guests. Quartz and granite countertops are ideal because they can withstand spills and other abuse.
Maximize the Use of Natural Light
Having an open floor plan allows natural light to flow throughout the kitchen. This helps brighten up the space and creates a more inviting atmosphere.
Using mirrors in your kitchen can also amplify natural light. By reflecting it around the room, it will help brighten the space and make it feel bigger. If you have a window that provides natural light, consider placing a mirror directly opposite it. This will brighten up the area and add a nice contrast to your kitchen décor.
An open-concept kitchen means guests can move from the living room to the kitchen and back again without feeling like they’re missing out on family conversations or having to rush through dinner. For homeowners looking to transform their kitchen into an open and inviting space, this can be a great option.
Create a Cozy Dining Bench
Depending on the style you select, a dining bench can make an instant seating upgrade for a casual dining room. For a modern look, choose one with sleek organic curves and minimal ornamentation for an understated silhouette that pairs well with simple chairs.
A backless bench is more versatile as it can be tucked under the table when not in use. For a more traditional design, choose a wood bench that pairs with your wooden table.
In this combined kitchen and living space, a custom L-shaped banquette creates a cozy spot for family meals. A white dining bench adds a bright touch to the room and complements the color of the table.
Frequently Asked Questions
What colour goes best with a white kitchen?
A white kitchen can look amazing in different colours. However, walnut looks best with it. The space will feel warm and inviting thanks to its natural wood tones. These two colors will complement each others well. If you are looking for something subtler, black and gray are good options. You can also choose bright colours like yellow and red if you are looking to make an impact. Whatever your preference, make sure to tie in your decor with it so that the space looks cohesive.
Are you able to put flooring underneath kitchen appliances?
You can’t ignore the importance of putting flooring under kitchen appliances. By doing this, you can make sure your countertop is at the proper height.
What place should pots and saucepans be in the kitchen?
Pots and saucepans should be stored in the cupboard directly above the stove. This makes them easily accessible when you need them and keeps your kitchen counters looking clean and uncluttered. To help organize your pots, you might also consider investing in a pot rack.
What should I consider first when remodelling my kitchen?
There’s no one answer to this question since everyone’s priorities and budget will differ. You need to think about the layout of your room, the appliances you are looking for, the style of countertops and cabinets you like, and the storage needs that you may have.
After you’ve chosen your must-haves you can take a look at other kitchen designs to get an idea of the options. It’s a good idea to start with big-ticket items such as appliances and cabinets and then add the details like paint colours or light fixtures if you have a tight budget.
It is important to take things one by one so that your kitchen remodel goes exactly as you planned.
What is the most functional kitchen layout?
An island is the best kitchen layout. It can be equipped with a stove, refrigerator, microwave, sink and dishwasher. An island-shaped layout is best for kitchen design.
Where do I start when planning a kitchen?
There are many choices, no matter if you’re renovating an existing space, or building a dream kitchen.
Before you start, take some time to look online for inspiration. Look for photos of kitchens that inspire you. Make notes about design ideas. Take some time to write down your ideas and then sit down with a pen.
Think about what you could do to improve these spaces. What could you make better? What would you add? Ask someone who is an expert in your field to help you get creative.
Once you have a clear idea of what you want, it is time to get started. Start with the basics. Get rid of any extra clutter. Don’t keep appliances that aren’t being used frequently. Replace old fixtures with newer models.
Next, take a look at areas of your kitchen that are too small. This is where storage or countertops are not possible. Think about how you can maximize those spots. They could become wine cellars or pantries.
Make sure to think about lighting. Are there any areas that could use a brighter light source? A wall sconce may be able to brighten dark corners.
After you’ve made your improvements list, it’s time to implement them!
You don’t have to know everything right away. Just keep working until you’ve got it all figured out. Don’t forget to enjoy it every day!
What’s a realistic budget for kitchen remodeling in Metro Vancouver
$50,000 is a realistic budget for a kitchen remodel in Metro Vancouver. This would cover new appliances, countertops, cabinets, flooring, and lighting.
Statistics
In large firms, the commission charged by the GC ranges from 15 to 25 percent of the total job cost. (thespruce.com)
In the Pacific region (Alaska, California, Washington, and Oregon), according to Remodeling Magazine, that same midrange central kitchen remodel jumps to $72,513, and a major upscale kitchen remodels jumps up $11,823 from the national average to $143,333. (hgtv.com)
Experts also recommend setting aside 20 percent of your budget for surprises, including unpleasant demolition discoveries. One is water damage, the electricity that is not up to code, or other budget-spiking gotchas. (hgtv.com)
It’s a fantastic thing about most home improvement projects: no matter the job. It often seems like the last 20% is the most difficult. (familyhandyman.com)
“We decided to strip and refinish our kitchen cabinets during a heat wave with 90-plus-degree temperatures and 90 percent humidity in a house with no air conditioning. (familyhandyman.com)
How To
How to design your kitchen layout
There’s no perfect kitchen layout, but specific layouts work better for specific spaces. These are some ideas to help you design the kitchen layout that works best in your space.
Start with the essentials. The first step in determining what you have in your kitchen is to decide what can be sacrificed. You don’t necessarily need a large stove, oven, or other appliances if your cooking isn’t very extensive.
Consider the traffic flow. Next, think about how your family uses the kitchen. Also consider how traffic flows through it. You want enough space to be able to move freely and not bump into others.
Maximize storage. The third step is to maximize storage in your kitchen layout. This goes for both food storage and cookware storage. You will want to ensure that everything has a home and is easily accessible.
Your style should be incorporated. The fourth step is to incorporate your style into the kitchen layout. This covers everything, from countertops and cabinets to flooring and appliances. Pick materials and finishes that suit your style.
Get in touch with a professional. Fifth and final is to consult a professional chef. They will help you to create a layout that fits all of your needs.
