During my foolish attempt (thankfully, successful, through a lot of time, trial and error) at DMC5 SoS difficulty run, the Vergil fights have caught my attention. Vergil's behaviour in both fights is very unusual, and I wanted to share some thoughts on this matter.

I'll open up with the most obvious one, a rebuttal of a misconception, that I've seen a number of times in the fandom, and which baffles me to this day - M20, aka Son VS Idiot Dad fight, which is a complete joke.

Don't get me wrong, this was not the hardest difficulty, not am I the most skilled player, but I almost won this battle first try, and actually won it on second, while being extremely freakin rusty at Nero game, by which I mean halfway remembering the controls in the middle of the fight. Even if you learn the attack patterns and dodges, a proper challenging bossfight will not allow this kind of victory.

M20 Vergil tends to fall on his knee for a breather after laying a single finger on him, he is Much Slower than before, and he gets caught by the most obnoxious Devil Breaker animations to boot. M20 Vergil is exhausted, he does not have his proper strength for this fight, and so a newly-awakened Nero thrashes him easily. Literally. This fight is mechanically and challenge-wise equal to an interactive cutscene, same as the credits. This does NOT mean Nero is on par with the twins' power, it only means he stopped them in their final moments, running all of their last fumes into that rush, only to be stopped from ending it all.

Okay, now that weird thing out of the way - M19 the Twins Final Stand.

Vergil behaves Very Weird in this fight, to say the least. First of all - phase 1 and phase 3 attacks are...Heaven and Hell. On SoS you need to dodge three then five consecutive Judgement Cuts. If phase 1 Vergil can be parried, interrupted or juggled even, phase 3 Vergil is completely bonkers insane, the only thing you can do against him is pray and run away. again I am not too skilled at the game.

Which, you know, is unusual for him. Because Vergil is decidedly Not known for toying with his prey. Vergil is known for going all in and executing threats on sight. It is weird for him to hold back so obviously.

Even funnier, one of the defeat lines he says is 'You've disappointed me, Dante' as in 'player you fool, this is only my first easy phase of the fight, how will you even survive the DT transition'.

But okay, this can be excused by DMC5 being, y'know, a game. And a good bossfight needs mechanics, phases and challenge escalation, otherwise, it will decidedly not be a good bossfight, I hear you say. Hold that thought.

Now for the Arguably Most Stupid Move In the Entirety of DMC - the Mega Ultra Super Freakin Charged Flying Lizord Freight Attack during the 2d to 3d fight phase transition.

I cannot find the words to properly describe just how stupid this move is. It is flashy and powerful, which does suit Vergil at first glance, however, this is a fight against Dante. Batshit like this Would never work on Dante, Could never work on Dante, and never ever Will work on Dante. You wanna know how to dodge this attack? Double jump. That's it. Of course, you can get fancy and RoyalRevenge it right back, or Gunslinger-charge the IMMAH FIRE MAH LAZOR with the Double Kalinnas, or do another stylish move, but the easiest, cheapest, most obvious way to dodge this attack is double jump.

Do you see why this is stupid. For your notice, even the fried chicken Malphas' rampage attack has a larger hitbox than this!!!

Now, contrary to all the evidence presented above, there is One attack in the 1st phase which you must always take seriously - the teleporting Stab. It's the scenic attack which has Vergil shishkebab the player with Yamato and reminisce on 'the old times'. This attack is not hard to dodge, any moving will do it, however the Timing has to be very exact - too fast or too slow, and you can say bye-bye to your healthbar.

This attack is Vergil NOT messing around, this one is serious and dangerous, and you need to always keep it in mind. This attack is Vergil checking you, this is him testing how in control you are of this fight. If you are too excited, or tired, or your attention wandered and he does this - Easy Mode is Now Selectable TM. If I am not mistaken, this is the only attack which timing does not change between phases, meaning the dodge window in phase one and phase three is the same. Meaning this attack is Vergil Not holding back, unlike every other move in phase one, which is considerably faster the more the fight progresses.

So, what do we have in total:

Vergil responding in kind to Dante's provocation in the cutscene; then for some reason limiting himself during the start of the fight; except The Stab, which you can consider a provocation in of itself; doing a needlessly flashy and hopelessly useless freight train attack, which Vergil overly-telegraphs by flying around (parading) beforehand; and only after ALL THIS, does he start fighting in proper.

Why?

Tu-dunnn, advertising time! I am a firm believer and follower of the amazing mutual @stashoflostsouls' school of character analysis and thought, and for this particular post I will be referencing her analysis of Vergil's motivation, which you can guess from the title of this analysis - Vergil loves his brother and it’s the reason he falls, and her analysis on V(ergil) and how Dante ended up being the death omen of his own brother.

You should really treat yourself to reading the full versions of this, but a tldr for the post purposes: Vergil loves his brother so much, he could never kill him; Dante's determination to chase Vergil made him a death omen for his own older brother; after his rebirth in dmc5 Vergil feels rejected by Dante, has no reason to live, and he is ready to face death, which he has been running from his whole life, at the hands of his younger brother.

This analysis shines new light and makes sense of this erratic behaviour of Vergil's in M19. The entire fight is one big trap, a provocation, only the last phase of the fight is the actual last stand. The holding back at the beginning of the fight, and the frying freight lizord attacks are a big red flag Vergil keeps waving in front of Dante. To make him commit to this fight, to truly end this for once and for all, to bait his younger brother into thinking Vergil is serious and force his hand into killing Vergil, because that's the only way he would allow himself to go out.

He insists it helps his killing ability and is a good luck charm

He lets out a few chuckles at this

Will pull you into a big hug as his way of thanking you

He's worried it'll get ruined if he wears it when he's working outside or tending to "dinner"

So he happily takes the shirt and gives you some gleeful giggles and kisses as his thank you

In the hour that passed since Buggy left to get more wine, the snow had nearly doubled in height. The frozen water was making a steady climb, intent on reaching the knee-high amount promised. Worry about the captain trudging back to the ship with the wine (and any other purchases he deemed necessary during a snowstorm) traveled on the icy wind.

Your rescue mission began with an ungraceful slide down the gangplank. Surprisingly, you kept your balance and arrived on the dock, standing on both feet and shaky knees. Pulling down your wool hat and holding the thick green coat closer to your body, you followed divots where old footsteps had been covered in fresh snow and ventured towards town.

The liquor shop wasn’t difficult to find, since it was one of the few places able to pull in successful business in this weather. Buggy, however, remained difficult to find. Questioning the owner and patrons about the boisterous blue-haired pirate resulted in zero leads.

No one recalled seeing such a colorful visitor, nor had anyone asked for the specific sweet red wine he was supposed to purchase. One resident suggested you head across the street. The food shop was another popular destination on poor weather days and maybe someone there could help.

The oily scent of fried food wafted through the air outside - a mix of savory goods with an undercurrent of sweet baked sugar. Definitely the type of siren’s call that Buggy would fall prey to. The heated interior worked fast to thaw the numbness in your cheeks. Two clerks stood behind the counter, hiding pity behind professionalism. They looked toasty and not at all interested in getting anywhere near the outside world.

“Hey…Hi, how are you?” You started the conversation breathlessly as your lungs struggled with the weight of the warm air.

“Good, thank you for asking. What can I get you today?” One worker stepped forwards with a practiced smile while the other went back to wiping down the counter.

“I, uh, need help. I’m looking for someone.”

You began describing Buggy when the quiet clerk smacked the counter excitedly. Her open palm slap halted the rest of your words and she jumped in to fill the space. “Oh, oh! I saw him! I saw him earlier!! Blue hair, big hat, red no-”

“So, he was here?” You cut her off, hoping to avoid the inevitable question that came up whenever Buggy’s nose was mentioned.

“Uh, not exactly. I saw him through the window. He was walking down the street like this-” She crossed her arms, hunched forwards, and started stomping in place.

Your knowing smile was all the shop workers needed to relax and giggle through the story.

“He practically ran into Sapling, who started scolding him. It was hilarious, because Sapling is this tall, so he really had to look up, like this.” Craning her head back, she wagged her finger at the ceiling. 

Oh no. Buggy doesn’t do well when someone - especially a stranger - talks to him like that.

Reading the worry on your face, the worker rushed into the rest of her story. “I think they worked it out. The guy you’re looking for took one of Saplings’ bags and they walked away together. I betcha he wanted to help Sapling get home as an apology.”

You nodded quietly, keeping your disagreement about Buggy’s motives silent. Knowing your captain, he might be trying to rob that unfortunate townie. What was supposed to be a rescue mission for your captain, could be turning into a rescue mission for the town.

You restarted the snowy journey armed with three cups of complimentary hot chocolate and very specific directions - turn left and walk until the house with a mustard yellow door (not daffodil yellow) and take another left. Don’t go down the street that goes left but at a diagonal, but the one that goes left-left. Then go past the black oak tree, the stone fence and the post-and-rail fence, until you get to the house with a picket fence.

Any doubts you had about finding the correct house were blown away by the wind carrying Buggy’s voice. He was shouting. You were familiar with his different tones and this sounded more like annoyance than anger or murderous rage. As you approached the house, you saw Buggy kicking aggressively and sending bits of snow flying.

“You need to clear a path if you’re going to make people walk you home! This is so fucking danger-ah!” Buggy’s last word crescendoed into a screech. 

The pirate lost his footing and slipped backwards. Although he was able to keep his torso afloat, his bottom half was less successful and his rump fell into the snow. 

“Mm, I see what you mean,” said an amused voice from the front door. That must be Sapling.

Although the chilly blow to his ego was enough to subdue his tirade, Buggy flipped off the commentator before patting the snow off his pants.

“Hello, boys!” you called out, finally announcing your arrival. “I have hot chocolate!”

Buggy’s head - just his head - whipped around, wondering if you might be a weather apparition. “Wha- How did you get here?”

“I walked,” you replied simply. You gave the two a quick smile before focusing on your feet and shuffling forwards. 

Buggy was right, continuing to compact the snow would be dangerous. Rather than adding to the icy path that was already forming, you chose to help clear a path. It only took a few minutes for your trail to connect with Buggy’s. You leaned up to press a quick kiss to his cold cheek, ignoring the heat gathering under your winter gear. It must be from physical exertion. At least, that’s what you told yourself. And Buggy’s red face was probably from being exposed to the elements.

Clearing his throat, your captain introduced you to Sapling - a small old man with wispy hair that put the snow to shame and a cheerful drawl. He held a cane that was more of a branch than a walking device. Although there was a slight tremor when you handed over the hot drink, Sapling did not seem like a frail person. Only a few minutes after meeting him and you understood how this man easily got on Buggy’s good side.

“I’ll be honest, sir, you weren’t what I was expecting when they mentioned Sapling,” you commented.

“Right? He’s a bit of beech…a pain in the ash…” Buggy muttered against the lip of his cup before taking a sip of the sweet drink. “Oh, this is nice!”

Sapling tutted and shook head with a smile. “I guarantee you’d have a different opinion if you visited with the blossoms. This area is a sure sight in fairer weather. Not to brag, but many say I have the best garden they've ever laid eyes on.”

The glimmer of pride in Sapling’s eyes was similar to the glint Buggy wore when talking about his circus. These two were definitely kindred spirits.

You looked around the yard and stared at how the white blanket rose and fell, covering plants that must be hibernating until winter. “Do you have any spare fertilizer? We could spread some on the walkway and it might melt the ice.”

“Oh, that’s a brilliant idea!” Sapling said brightly, tapping his cane on the ground. “Follow me, Captain.” The man turned without waiting for a response.

“How do you know that?” Buggy hissed as he lurched forwards. 

“I’m full of surprises, you know.” Faced with a glare, you couldn’t hold back a smile that came with the reply. 

You handed him your half-full cup as an apology for an answer you knew he found unsatisfactory. Buggy accepted and drained it in two gulps.

The two men came back with a small bag of fertilizer, which you offered to spread out after seeing the way Buggy’s face crinkled. You didn’t know his round nose could scrunch up so much. It was absolutely adorable, but you wouldn’t tell him that. A quick peck on your forehead was Buggy’s way of saying he’ll see you back on the ship. He went back to the liquor store and you took care of the ice path.

With enough fertilizer left in the bag to put down another layer tomorrow, you rolled the bag and went to put it next to the front door for easy access. Sapling was waiting for you with a wicker basket full of small packets.

“You and that captain of your’s did good. It’s a blessing to come across people like you.” His words were warm and genuine, like a summer day. The name made sense, now. “Here, take a few seeds. It’s my way of saying thank you.”

When you tried to decline, Sapling pushed the basket towards you again, his balance wobbling with the movement. It was a ploy to make you feel bad and choose some plants and it worked. You rifled through the packets, the paper and seeds whispering for you to choose wisely. As someone who wasn’t much of a gardener, you considered picking a few at random when three envelopes called to you directly. They were flower seeds.

Thanking Sapling profusely and promising to come back another time, you tucked the gardenia seeds into your pocket. Once again, you felt unexpected heat pooling across your body, making your palms slick, settling into your armpits, and burning your cheeks. The flower seeds reminded you of Buggy and you wondered if he’d like them as well.

you happened upon them again as you went through your feed, and miguel glanced over at what you were looking at because you chuckled a little at the tweet. he got curious, and because you were such a nice friend, you showed it to him all nonchalantly. "'i want miguel o'hara to blank me in the blank until i memorize every vein, until my uterus is the shape of his blank, until i see different galaxies, and comfort him about his traumas. i can psychoanalyze this motherfucker while giving him the best head ever'–what the fuck is wrong with these... ay, puta." he read aloud as you erupted in peals of laughter.

miguel sighed as you found even more interesting things on your feed, and all of it was about miguel's less traumatic, but still very horrifying, canon event of discovering internet people want to fuck with and discuss all about his character. "am i just that, a character on a screen, on a comic book for these... desperate, horny, yet so... insightful people?" he asked underneath his breath as you showed lyla some interesting 18+ art if him. "looks like they tried to get it right, though i know you're... a lot bigger than that." "not another word." he said as he said as he ran a hand across his face and sighed deeply.

looks like he won't be visiting earth-1218 for a while.

i was going to respond to this with a list of quotes from him that really show how he's the grumpiest grandpa ever but then i remembered this one quote from him that goes:

"There are some strange creatures on Mount Crenel… Creatures I've never seen before, and your sword alone won't beat them! Don't give up hope, though! Try your other items on them! Well…you don't need me to tell you how to do your job. Just deal with those monsters, and I'll take care of everything else."

i think the "Well...you don't need me to tell you how to do your job" is funny and interesting in equal measure because it's such a stark contrast from other companions for links who were on the younger side (think oot link with navi and ww link with the king of red lions) at the time whose purposes were definitely more aligned with, at the very least, helping link to do his job as a hero (navi with z-targeting, the king of red lions with helping link get around and also kind of. manipulating him into becoming The Hero™). but ezlo is canonically fucking clueless about damn near everything that doesn't involve his niche realm of being a "famous minish sage" who is "renowned for his amazing creations" (according to his figurine description). like:

"A strange nut that will allow us to understand the Minish language… The Jingle Nut, did he say…? No, wait… That's not it… Ah, I remember now! It was the Jabber Nut. That's what it was… Come on, my boy! We've got to find the Jabber Nut!"

"Have you ever visited Hyrule before? What? You have? …What's it like? Not that I… I mean, I've seen it before! Of course I have! I'm very well traveled. I just wanted to see…what you thought of it!"

"So! We must infuse the White Sword with the elemental power. That means we must find the elemental sanctuary. And the way we do that is… Um… Well, I'm sure we'll figure it out!"

"So there are three books that we're supposed to return, right? Link, I'm sure you can handle it! Don't get me wrong! I'd love to help! But I'm a great Minish sage! I don't understand your big, human ways! So…I'm counting on you!"

there are a BUNCH more examples but you get my point. i just think it's really, really funny that out of the few companions that younger links had at that point in time, it's in the minish cap that said companion is like "ehhhhh i don't need to tell him what to do he's smart enough to deal with it himself. he just needs to be yelled at to stop dawdling and GET A FUCKING MOVE ON sometimes." which is also kind of exemplified by this line of ezlo's near the end of the game, too:

"We will get through this! We have all of the techniques and power you've gained in your journey! And we have your wisdom and courage as well! Link! I believe in you!"

it says a lot that he attributes not only courage to link but wisdom as well. link has so so so so so SO much personality in this game and between his own flavor text/internal dialogue when interacting with things and ezlo's running commentary on link's attitude/words/expressions/reactions to things it's SO plain to see (ex: "Link, I know this may not be a great time for it, but... I wanted to say thanks for everything you've done. I'm very grateful for-- Hm? What? You're freaked out? You're not used to me being nice!? Fine, then! Forget I said anything!"/"You're so energetic all the time… Not that I'm saying you're hyperactive or anything! I meant it as a compliment! Like…you've got a special talent for being WAY too peppy or something."). and i love it so much. it's also exemplified by this line of dialogue which is absolutely hilarious to me:

"Do you have to ask me about every single little thing?! Just figure it out for yourself, you big baby!"

Harry Potter’s life is going well in the aftermath of the war. Sure, his house is dark and run-down and might hate him (while his house elf definitely hates him). But other than that, things are good. Except, yeah, okay, Hermione and Ron are no longer on speaking terms. Worse, they keep trying to get Harry to pick sides. But otherwise, Harry couldn’t be happier. Well. Except for the fact that Ginny is being super weird about their relationship and never wants to have sex or talk about the future. But other than that, Harry is perfectly fine, thankyouverymuch. At least, he is until Draco Malfoy sues him for ownership of Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place. Then Harry really isn’t fine at all.

This fic is FUNNY. Harry is such a wally, so perfectly in-character as our awkward, repressed, depressed, hilarious little cinnamon roll (and Draco is so proud and petty and desperate for Harry too). The romance is so well-deserved by both, and we love a Harry-realizing-his-sexuality fic (SO well-done here—the tension is scorching!).

On a stag do in sunny Brighton with the Gryffindor lads, the last person Harry expects to run into is Draco Malfoy. After a glimpse of Malfoy’s Muggle life in Britain’s gay capital, Harry’s curiosity gets the better of him and he finds himself returning to the seaside again and again, drawn to the city, drawn to this new version of Malfoy that Harry barely recognises from school. Meanwhile, Draco’s just trying to live his big and best queer life: working for the weekend, chasing hot men, getting lost in Brighton's nightlife, and making friends with the neighbourhood cats. Why does his former school rival and crush have to show up and spoil everything?

An absolute banger on the first day of the fest. Come for the absolutely perfect characterization of Harry & Draco, stay for the lush descriptions of Brighton and EVERYWHERE. The perfect start-of-summer fic, absolutely impeccable, gentle, gorgeous summer vibes (conveniently when where I live FINALLY started getting hot). So many elements to love here: Harry learning about himself, gently and with grace from everyone around him, the TEXTING (absolutely perfect), the side characters with perfect characterization (Seamus at the hotel!), the flirting, DRACO BUYING HARRY A LEATHER JACKET (;_;). Just bury me dead; this fic was so lovely & it’s all I need.

1. Who or what got you into F1?

Basic bitch answer but my dad. He was a big fan, and his dad was a fan. I was plonked infront of the TV to watch it as a kid, and grew up never missing a race. That was until Sky Sports braught it off chanel 4, and now my family can't afford to watch it anymore. I have to pirate it now coz I AINT PAYING 50 A MONTH go fuck yourself Sky Sports.

2.Who was the very first F1 driver you supported? Do you support them now? Have your opinions on them differed or stayed the same since then?

Probably Lewis? Or Jenson? I was (still am) a Mclaren fan as a kid, and my dad always cheered on English drivers, so I just copied him. I still love them both now, my opinions havn't changed on them at all!

3.Who’s your current favourite F1 driver?

Current grid? Probably Max, Fernando or Oscar. They are all so so talented, it's just a pivalidge to watch them drive. I think they're all really funny in their own ways too.

My favourite driver ever? Senna, obviously. Or Prost.... Can't ever pick.

4.Is there a driver pairing or pairings you support? What made you attracted to that pairing in the first place?

I support all and any pairings. F1 RPF in all forms is delicious thankyou. My faves are: Prost X Senna, Carlos X Lando, Max X Charles, Peroni X Villeneuve, George X alex, Mika X Michael, and Nigel X Elio.

The only ship I don't really vibe with is Pierre X Charles? Like idk I just don't feel it. But I'll still read it so lol

5. Do your parents, siblings or relatives have a favourite team and/or favourite driver(s)?

My dad supports Mclaren same as me. My sister isn't really into it? She finds charles hot and will watch edits of him but shes never watched a race or really gives a shit about the actual driving. Shes here for the thirst traps and Ferrari merchandise and I respect that so much.

6. Do you have any favourite races? Are there any that stand out to you the most?

Dallas, Texas 1984. What a fucking shit show. Absolute comedy sketch. Everything about that dumb race is so funny to me.

7. Do you have a favourite circuit? Can be from the past or from the current calendar.

Hungaroing! It was the first F1 race I ever attended, and the joy I get out of watching it and screaming 'IVE BEEN THERE IVE BEEN THERE' never leaves. The first race in person was special, so hungaoring is special now too.

8. Have you ever been to an F1 race in real life? Feel free to tell us your experience going to one if you like

Yes. And I don't know why but I was so shocked at how friendly everyone was. I think I was expecting it to be like football, but everyone got along so well no matter the teams ect. I always get general admission now, because its so much fun to sit and make new friends with other F1 freaks!!! Everyone shares food, alcohol, blankets, brollies ect- its alwaus such a good atmosphere at everywhere I've been.

9. Have you ever met an F1 driver in real life?

Yes. Seb and Jenson. In the same day. I nearly exploded, but actually managed to come off very normal and composed.

10. Do you have a favourite F1 car? If so, what is it?

McLaren MP4/4 1988.

hey - absolutely always okay to ask me about my favourite characters (or favourite anything's). I haven't unboxed them for some time and am frankly excited to wave them in everyone's faces again (though picking a top 10 is hardddddd - this could very easily have been a BNHA/HQ/JJK list but I restricted myself to 1 character per media)

Bakugou Katsuki (BNHA) - beloved boy, loml, star in my sky, etc etc. forever #1 of any + all lists. I adore grumpy characters who find themselves caught up in being loved into character growth by their friends, but I think the main reason he's my #1 is that I see a lot of myself in him. I too was a very angry young person with a superiority complex who went on a journey into letting others in, allowing myself to experience joy and love, and dismantling ideas of perfectionism. I don't think I'll ever truly let the pricklyness or slight god complex go though

Bokuto Koutarou (Haikyuu) - beloved boy #2 because who doesn't love Bokuto??? We are all rendered weak in the face of his endearing and endless puppy energy. I love how loving, optimistic and tenacious he is. Oh, and let's not talk about how relatable some of his other qualities are (prior to watching HQ I almost verbatim quoted a complaint Bokuto makes in a completely different context). love himmmmmmmm

Sarah Harding (The Lost World) - One of two of my biggest role models as a child/teenager. I wanted to be like Sarah so bad and had also wanted to work in animal behaviour in part bc of her. She's completely badass, and as an adult I also have a newfound appreciation for how she handles communicates + asserts her boundaries in her relationship with Ian

Padme Amidala (Star Wars) - The second of my biggest role models as a child/teenager. Leia didn't grow on me until I was older, but I was obsessed with Padme. I feel like the fandom + Episode III does her dirty, but to me I adore how intelligent, caring and assertive she is. I studied politics at college because of her!

Gojo Satoru (Jujutsu Kaisen) - Possibly my favourite of all of the shitbags that I love. I remember desperately pleading with myself to not fall on my face for Gojo during the first episode of S1 and made it until the credits... Why do I love him? He's heinously obnoxious, self-assured, hilarious, extremely powerful, and a complete walking disaster of a man.

Cristina Yang (Grey's Anatomy) - I don't watch Grey's Anatomy anymore but I used to be obsessed with it. I still own S1-6 on DVD and have very fond memories of it. I always loved Cristina for her blunt directness, self-belief, intelligence, and approach to friendships/relationships. Plus, my best friend in college identified me as a 75% Cristina/25% George personality so Cristina has also been very dear to my heart for that reason lmao

Achilles (The Song of Achilles) - It wouldn't be me if I didn't include Achilles on a list of favourites. I named my dog after Achilles because I love him so much and joked to my (poor) boyfriend that if we ever have a kid together, their middle name should be Achilles. Madeline Miller's depiction of Achilles is my favourite and love him for very similar reasons to Bakugou tbh. Give me a man filled with unbridled pride and arrogance with god-like physical prowess and I'll probably love them forever (plus also, ow my heart)

Kassandra (Assassin's Creed Odyssey) - *heart eye emoji* but fr I have such a fondness for Kassandra. She's the perfect mix of stoic big buff lady, hilariously sarcastic sense of humor, and absolute heart of gold. I love her characterisation and think she's such a fantastically written character. Plus... I want her to pick me up and cuddle me so bad

Lilo (Lilo and Stitch) - I think it's a tragedy that Lilo is often forgotten due to not being a Disney princess bc she is honestly such a wonderful character. Lilo and Stitch is one of my favourite movies, and I admire how resilient, loving, eccentric and curious Lilo is

Xandri Corelel (the Xandri Corelel series) - The Xandri Corelel is one of my favourite sci-fi series and that is, in part, bc of Xandri herself. She's the first autistic woman I encountered in sci-fi and I adored how the series explores how her autism is what makes her an excellent head of xeno-liaisons. She's also bisexual and polyamorous so even further brilliant rep for me, and tbh is just a great character all round

I read your 13k on Tumblr *eyes emoji*

Much respect though I have for the genre, I don't really read fanfic, but I wanted to read something you had written and knew enough about MDZS to feel grounded for In The Pines, so I read it.

You have a great grasp of voice in your narration, and a great ability to tweak it to show more or less of the character as the story develops. There's a great sense in the original story (as I read it) of this overwhelming catastrophe of love developing in Lan Zhan - not suddenly or surprisingly, but hugely and honestly, like a great wash of snow slumping off an eave - and I think you did a really good job developing something of the same feeling in your story within the context of things getting very, uh, hot, very fast (in a different way from the original - don't tell me sword duels and rules enforcement aren't flirting, I won't believe you). Still very gradual on the feelings, too, which in addition to reflecting the characters well, I think is also a great depiction of negotiation and kink and how that relates to the realization of self and others (I'm sorry, I always talk this way). Plus, of course, when those bananas-perfect phrases come through that are just fucking dead on and hilarious, they fit in perfectly as part of the story (the only thing the 13k in one go kept me from doing was being able to find the quote I wanted to highlight here - it might be in the earlier parts - it's in there, though, and it's great, I'll look again).

Oh my god you read the entire 13k! Thank you!! For saying kind things!! Honestly my second reaction (after several big happy "!!!!!"s) was "I can do better than that, I swear!", which was very funny -- I like watching my own ego dance nervously. There's something delightful, actually, about hearing you talk about my writing in a piece that I'm not as confident in as some others, where I haven't been able to (or simply didn't) cover up all my little heavy-handed habits.

Which is my overlong way of saying that it was genuinely fascinating and also very helpful to hear what you're picking out from this particular chunk of text! Like, I never would use this 13k as an introductory business card, as it were, but probably it gives a more honest read of the median state of my prose. I think I mentioned a while back that I've been trying to write my own original stuff, and finding it very much like standing in the surf to battle the ocean, so the fact that you're coming from mostly outside the fic genre and still have nice things to say is helpful in reminding me that I do have SOME grasp of what words do. Thank god! And thank you for taking the time to read it.

Hi!!!!! Firstly, thank you so much for this, it's been a hot minute since I've been active on tumblr and haven't really received an ask in a while, so this made me very happy 👉👈

Hmmm I have SO many favourite characters so this is a bit difficult! But I will try my best below:

Xie Lian, Tian Guan Ci Fu - hands down my #1! He's my favourite because he's so gentle and kind despite going through so much of pain and suffering, and all he'd like is to save the common people (he's a former prince/God) - I could talk forever about him, I love him a lot and he's definitely taught me to be a lot kinder and find joy in smaller/simpler things

Kita Shinsuke, Haikyuu - he and I are both creatures of habit, and I'm particularly fond of his quote "I am built upon the small things I do everyday" which really had a big impact on my overall life

Lydia Martin, Teen Wolf - a whole QUEEN, she was my idol many years ago!!! She's delicate yes but she's such a badass who cares so much about her friends, hurt them and she will kick your butt XD

Sugawara Koushi, Haikyuu - this list might have too many hq characters,,,, but I love him SO much, he's the type of person to take a step back for the team/others, thinks very positively and realistically, and overall is very caring (and funny!

Kugisaki Nobara, Jujutsu Kaisen - another badass princess, she's also taught me a lot, especially about the people around you and breaking female stereotypes

Aaron Warner, Shatter Me - evil bad guy who turns out to not be so bad and would do absolutely anything for the love of his life, he's stunning and strong and pretty hilarious actually

Howl Pendragon, Howl's Moving Castle - strong, persevering and also suitably dramatic, he's beautiful and scary and a hero - plus his fashion is A++++

Akutagawa Ryuunosuke, Bungo Stray Dogs - I did NOT like him at first but as the series went on, I grew to love him so much - he's a tsundere type who really just wants his idol's praise, he will also reluctantly be a hero but he will do it!

Shi Qingxuan, Tian Guan Ci Fu - love love LOVE this icon, they're so bubbly and quirky and funny BUT ofc tragedy strikes and they're on their way to rebuilding life but they give me inspiration that life does go on and is worth fighting for

Kara Danvers, Supergirl - amazing iconic sometimes questionable (don't keep major secrets from your friends) but ultimately someone who wants the best for everyone and also cares deeply for those around her :")

💝what is a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?

The Art of the Possible! I figured the only other person on earth who’d be interested in this story was the person who wrote it with me. (Hello mysterious coauthor 😘) I figured, no way; there is no audience for this story. It’s Sharon-centric when the MCU hasn’t given anyone much of a reason to like or care about her character! It gets into the weeds of TFATWS’s often terrible writing and the disturbing politics of the MCU! The Bucky/Sharon pairing is a thing exactly nobody asked for! It’s an intricately written non-chronological story that involves at least five separate plot lines that cover a decade-plus, which is a big ask for something the audience comes to the story not caring about or invested in.

But I had a blast working out how to tell a story where what we see Sharon do in TFATWS makes a terrible sort of sense, from a certain point of view; a story that pokes at the politically charged subtextual hypocrisy—or worse—that often underpins the MCU’s storytelling. I still think about this story, its version of Sharon (and the Bucky here, too—I want them to be ok!) and I would happily go on and on about the meta and politics at play here to this day. 

All of which is to say, I was very surprised when this story did find some readers. I wish I’d been at a place where I had enough spoons to reply to the comments people left—hell, I may loop back and reply even if it’s bizarrely and awkwardly late. But I was so delighted to get some engagement and some amazing, thoughtful responses that I absolutely did not expect.

🍉in what ways has writing helped you process trauma and/or navigate through your own life?

The glib way to answer this question would be to make an elaborate ta-da flourish in front of A Man Takes His Sadness Down to the River, which is often hilariously on the nose for things I’m processing myself. Thankfully, I think it doesn’t show too badly in the text itself, but this is a deeply personal story to me; to quote the poem where I got the series title: because you thought it would follow, you thought there would be / some logic, perhaps, something to pull it all together / but here we are in the weeds again.

Writing, off and on for much of my life, has served as a wonderful way to think through problems and difficult emotions. And my urge to write often comes from one of these “how do you…” questions. 

How do you live with this? This loss? This longing? These messy and complicated desires? This confusion?

And how do you live with happiness—with yourself as you are and in the world as it is?

What do you do with all this survival?

Amber: My little fire bunny, I love her so much. She’s always so bubbly and capable. My go to archer. My SO bought me a copy of her Baron Bunny, best Christmas gift ever!

Barbara: I want to adopt her. I know a lot of people find her annoying, but I just can’t, she’s too adorable! She just wants to make everybody feel better with her singing. My #1 healer!

Bennet: My son! My poor, unlucky son. I hate that he has trouble forming an adventuring team because of his bad luck, and it always makes me so happy to see him with his friends during events.

Cyno: He is my biggest favorite out of all of these characters. I love how he’s serious and stoic right up until he starts relaxing and begins cracking silly jokes. Some of them are hit-and-miss, but others are genuinely funny to me. I love how protective he is, even with the criminals he’s dealing with - if they are in his care, then no harm will come to them until he can hand them over to the Akademiya (and after that it’s no longer his problem 🤷‍♀️). And I love how nerdy and absolutely obsessed he is with the in-game card game.

I still need to get him to lvl 90 so he can replace Keqing as my electro character. And then Keqing can get a much needed break.

Diluc: He falls into two of my favorite character tropes - red hair, and fire powers. I’m weak. ‘Course it doesn’t help that he’s an honorable, hardworking, eloquent, rich boy who seems so incredibly lonely, even when he’s surrounded by people.

Gorou: Puppy! Puppy-puppy-puppy-puppy! He’s so cute, and I love how he has a huge sweet tooth! I bet he’d be nice to cuddle. Can I adopt him? Please? 🥺

Itto: Bestest and tallest oni! I love how carefree he is, he’s such a child at heart. Also, he’s hilarious! I love listening to him speak, his voice actor does an amazing job.

Kaeya: I love-hate him. I never forgave the smug-ass bastard for lying about giving me a new weapon if I found some smugglers for him. But damn he’s smooth and so pretty. And such a tease, argh! 😩

Kaveh: He has a heart of gold, giving all of his money to people in need (and subsequently falling for a lot of scams…) I want to hug him so badly, especially after the end of the ‘Parade of Providence’ event T^T I need more canon content with him, he seems like such a creative and pleasant person to be around!

Lisa: She reminds me so much of myself IRL, lazy and turning everything into an innuendo 🤣 We also look somewhat similar; tall with long, brown, wavy hair. Can I be a librarian witch, too?

Razor: Another son, little wolf boy, I love him so much T_T Please never grow up and learn how to speak properly.

Thoma: He seems like he’d be such a good friend, the kind to instantly notice if something is wrong and ask what he can do to make it better. But I can’t help but wonder how many people do the same for him… Also, he’s an animal lover, so that’s a huge bonus.

Tighnari: I want to pull his ears so badly! Not hard or anything, but I wanna see how flexible they are. Also, catch me calling him ‘ya big Valuka’ every time he does something I don’t agree with. I wanna run a plant nursery with him.

(To be completely honest, I kinda disliked Tighnari before I really got to know his character. I tested him when he was released and found his voice lines so boring. ‘One with the forest! Let’s nip it in the bud! I hear EVERYTHING!’ Big whoop. The thing is that the voice lines he uses in combat do not portray his delightful snarkiness, I had to wait for that until I progressed enough in the story for him to appear. Then he was added to my ever-growing pile of faves)

Xiangling: Yet another adoptee. I love her battle quotes about how she wants to eat the monsters and her ‘Ow! My dinner is attacking me!!’ And her summon is too cute! Just… please don’t make me eat her experimental dishes T_T

well well, tears still taste good. guess who? first of all, i love daemons character development SO much! ive got the feeling as if this part is about him. like its not totally but his character is SO big there. i love how whiny and desperate he is. he feels like the man who gave his life to save his wife. the brothers' relationships !! the first scene got me 1) a little amused 2) softened 3) thinking. 1) drunk bubbling mess daemon? i giggled. he does hilarious things. 2) THE brothers relationships TT how viserys takes care of him like he IS the baby brother? oh and i never really noticed you using it in another parts so it made SO much sense for me here. as ive said, it made this part SO abt daemon. and how daemon sees his older brother as the father figure while next to him hes just a rebellious child whos saying 'fucking viserys' and then beggs him to let him wed. GOT ME CHOKING ON MY THOUGHTS 3) i was confused at first. yeah he sees viserys as the father figure but. was he that drunk to just mistake him? to talk to the dead? were these just his true feelings? AND one time when he said kepa and viserys stopped talking i even got a thought that maaaybe daemon does it intentionally and manipulatively. but hes too baby brother for this. AND also i was confused bc ?? bro?? youre married? in valyrian way? its even more valuable? why r u mopping? so that made me think even MORE abt his character's development AND depth. bc this inner conflict causes self-hatred? maybe not this in particular but he absolutely does think he deserves love. neither from his wife nor from the brother. My Review:

The things I love best about Ali Hazelwood's books are the bitingly accurate portrayals of what it's like to be a woman in STEM academia. They are consistent and really highlight how much work needs to be done in regards to workplace equality. At the same time, the characters all display a realistic passion for the sciences and an inherent social awkwardness that, as a former Caltech student, really ring true and make the book feel like coming home. The romances are a little bit formulaic with the small woman, big hulking man trope, but they center ideas of being true to yourself and finding out what you really want. The leading men are always decent, kind, considerate and willing to (eventually) treat the women with care and understanding. It was painful to watch Elsie contort her personality to fit whatever she thought the person she was interacting with would want to see, and I was so happy to see her work to shake those habits and learn to stand up for what *she* wants. Jack was hugely instrumental in helping her on the road to finding herself and it was so refreshing. The fake dating plotline was hilarious, as was Jack's grandmother Millicent. I loved their relationship. Every time I read an Ali Hazelwood novel I am transported back to my days as an aspiring scientist and they make me seriously nostalgic for both the good and bad parts of being in STEM and I find myself eager for the next hit of that nostalgia. There seriously aren't enough romances that capture that feeling of the peculiar world that is STEM academia. *Thanks to NetGalley and Berkley for providing an early copy for review.

In it, you spoke about how both Harry and Draco are queer-coded in canon. Would you mind to expand on that? Hi anon! Sorry for the delay in answering; I wanted to do the question justice. I could have thrown some stuff at you off the top of my head, but that didn’t feel right—at my core, I am a Ravenclaw, and I could not bring myself to half-ass this. (For those who haven’t seen the referenced post, you can find it here)

Before I get into my personal analysis, I want to note that there has been a lot of discourse on this topic over the years, so many of my ideas didn’t actually originate with me, they just got incorporated into my mental cache of HP analysis. If you search the tags “canon drarry” or “drarry in canon” or any variation thereon, you’ll get a bunch of posts where people pull excerpts and explain how extremely not heterosexual the things happening in them are. @iamnmbr3 in particular has written a ton of these (which I didn’t realize were all by the same person until I started trying to track them down!), a few favorites being Arthur Weasley clearly thinking Harry’s got a crush, this hilarious list of canonical interactions, Narcissa’s very accurate understanding of how aware Harry and Draco are of each other, and that time Harry got beaned in the head by luggage because he was watching Draco change. Others classics include when @big-draco-energy got an ask about how Harry assumed that Draco must be a Death Eater if he was preoccupied enough to not care about their rivalry (and was right) and when @northward had a great observation about their obsessions with each other.

And now, on to my own thoughts!

So first off, I want to say that some of the things that I’m going to flag as unintentional queer coding are rooted in stereotypes, and that that doesn’t mean that I believe in or condone said stereotypes. However, media often uses stereotyping as a lazy shorthand, and I think that that should be taken into account in this context, because it means there’s a reasonable assumption that people would interpret some character traits and scenes through that lens.

Secondly, so much credit to my amazing friend @mxmaneater, who actually HAS A FOLDER of photos of super gay moments from the books, which saved me a lot of time trying to dig up quotes that I knew existed but wouldn’t have been able to easily track down.

And finally, these are my personal interpretations. I’m not any sort of academic, and we’re all aware that JKR does not believe that she wrote Harry or Draco as queer. I’m hoping folks can be chill and take this in the spirit that it’s intended: as one possible reading. Your beliefs about the series and the characters are your own, and I’m not here to tell you you’re wrong just because they aren’t mine, so please extend me the same courtesy!

Now, without further ado, here we go:

Let’s start with Harry, because that’s the easier lift here. The Harry Potter books are written from a third person limited perspective, which means we only see things from Harry’s point of view and are privy to his thoughts. I can’t find a link, but I know that it’s widely quoted that JKR at some point used the fact that the books are from Harry’s perspective as justification for the ways in which some people or events were portrayed. The answers on this Quora post about pro-Gryffindor bias in the books do a good job of explaining the idea of Harry’s point of view skewing the point of view of the series.

So if we accept that the books reflect Harry’s thoughts and feelings about things, we’re left with the unmistakable fact that he frequently observes how handsome various boys and men are. We have physical descriptions of Cedric Diggory, Bill Weasley, Sirius Black, and even Tom Riddle that clearly illustrate admiration. Additionally, although it’s largely unflattering, it’s often noted amongst fans that we get full physical descriptions of Draco extremely regularly—we know his hair and eye color pretty much from the get go and hear about them often, as well as his outfits, his swagger, his smirking and ‘leering’ (yes, she really uses that word), etc.

Some very heterosexual observations on men from the perspective of one Harry James Potter

Sure, Harry never explicitly says he’s into men, but let’s keep in mind the time period the books were placed in and the type of family that Harry was raised by: there is a very real chance that Harry wouldn’t have been aware of the idea of bisexuality and therefore would never have questioned his own orientation. Because he knew he liked girls, so of course he wasn’t gay! To many folks who later realized they were some form of not-straight, particularly bisexual and/or pansexual folks, this is a pretty common experience: not really registering that checking out people of multiple genders is not actually something that everyone does. *Stares vaguely into the distance while pondering all of the girls I didn’t realize I was crushing on until many years later*

Plus, as I’ve mentioned before, there’s the symbolism of the whole ‘literally being raised in a closet, abused for being a ‘freak’, and forced to keep his truth a secret because the people he lived with were ashamed of him’ thing. To queer people raised by homophobes (or anyone who knew people in that situation), this isn’t even the slightest bit subtle, and the fact that JKR either didn’t notice or is in denial about it is truly bizarre to me.

Draco is a little harder to pin down without delving into stereotyping, so I’m just gonna go for it: Draco is a textbook Drama Gay™. He’s performative in his speech, using a lot of flamboyant gestures; he constantly performs over the top reenactments for his friends; he makes buttons and sews costumes and does drawings and generally just goes through a lot of effort to pick on his ‘rival’. The only scenes where we see him in something that could be read as a heterosexual romantic relationship are with Pansy Parkinson, whom he doesn’t seem remotely interested in; she reads more like a prop that he puts up with to project a particular image. Also, at one point we see him flopped across her lap to have his hair pet, which is definitely a thing that I remember happening during rehearsals back when I was involved in high school theater (and almost never by people with compatible orientations).

And then there’s this scene:

Someone once made a post about just how gay this whole thing is: pointedly grabbing the biggest bowtruckle, whispering in Harry’s ear, smirking over his shoulder while walking away, etc. (If anyone can find it, please send me the link and I’ll add it to the list of other people’s thoughts that contributed to all of this.)

So, that’s what I’ve got for you! Someone could probably write a whole research paper on this (and hell, maybe they have), but hopefully this at least somewhat explains my assertions of queer coding. It was like one of those “play date” edits that were trending around TikTok.

Tom comes out to check on you only to find you smiling at his phone. His eyes widen when he sees what you’re looking at.

“I—uh, I can explain!”

He thought you would find it weird and creepy of him to have a live wallpaper of you as his lock screen.

But you didn’t find it weird, you thought it was cute and adorable of him. It made you realize how wholesome of a boyfriend he was.

He’s instantly relieved when you tell him that.

You’d ask him where he got it and he would open up TikTok, then open his favorites.

Which exposed him because it’s literally a bunch of edits of you.

“Why do you have so many edits of me?”

He shrugs, “I just like watching them. They also help me when we’re apart. The fans make so many good edits of you, you need to watch them.”

Tom then goes on to show you all the edits he’s saved from TikTok.

You guys cuddle on the couch while going through them.

After you’ve gone through most of the ones from TikTok he would open up Instagram.

“Wait, there’s more?”

“Yes, there’s more. I can make about 5 Marvel length films out of all of them.”

He’d be so adorable and click on specific ones to show you because they were his favorite.

“Ooo, baby let’s watch this one. It’s very cute and my favorite song is in it.”

“Can we please watch the thirst edits?”

“Look, this one’s an edit of us. Aren’t we the cutest couple ever?”

Later on you would admit that you also watch fan edits of him.

“Do you really?”

“Yeah, they always pop up on my feed and I end up going down a rabbit hole of fan edits of you.”

Then you guys would go through your phone and watch fan edits of him.

He’d find a lot of them ‘sick’ and asks you to send them to him.

Now that you both knew about your love for fan edits of each other, you guys would send edits to each other all the time🥺

Sometimes you’ll even share them to your stories.

Tom did this the most with edits of you. When he shared the edits to his story he would add comments like:

“😍😍😍😍”

“My beautiful girl”

“Thank you for making an edit of @yourinstagram just laughing. I’ve been missing her so much and this really made my day x”

*thirst edit of you* “I’m the luckiest man in the world😍”

Tom is just the most supportive boyfriend and your biggest fan.

He could watch fan edits of you all day if he could :)
