so I made the mistake of listening to the character songs sung by the voice actors and it sparked a buggy centric mad max style musician/music au and I cant get it out of my head here is a google doc with all the details and my reasonings

You do get the sense that the fallout of Roger's death and the Roger pirates disbanding not so much traumatized Buggy and Shanks indifferent ways but instead generated such drastically different reactions to the trauma.

While the trauma of everything seemed to push Shanks into the future, always constantly waiting for something, putting plans on hold and then later in place, for this great moment, this great coming that he sees on the Horizon. For Buggy it rooted him firmly in the past keeping him trapped in this grief masquerading as anger.

While Roger's death forced Shanks to grow up fast, it kind of arrested Buggy's development keeping him stuck in those same feelings, rooted int that same place.

You get the sense that Buggy's whole east blue schtick is just one long overdue rebellious phase one big fuck you to Roger and his ideals. He's rebelling against Roger's principles. One of their rules was don't steal from innocent people and Buggy was keeping a whole town in poverty. If Roger and Luffy's pirating styles are diametrically opposed to someone like Blackbeard, who might be the most literal pirate in the entire series, then buggy is the parody of that Blackbeard piratism. He is playing up cruelty, being the most piratey pirate possible, hell he's literally a clown on a stage. It's all a show! It's his own special way of trying to "get back at Roger" of trying to discard everything Roger taught him for this overacted, over exaggerated clownish cruelty. Mentally he never left that execution square. He is still 15, alone and scared.

Hell he literally never left either, while I'm pretty sure Shanks' booked it out of the east blue as fast as he could, Buggy never lef, might have never left, if not for Luffy. It's part of why Luffy bothers him so much, he's just like Roger everything that Buggy is trying hard to forget and here comes this kid, whose never even met the Captain but is wearing his hat, shoving it right back in his face.

It makes sense that he never leaves the east blue till Luffy literally forces him out of it (fucking with Luffy gets him captured and imprisoned) and it makes sense that it's Luffy that literally breaks him out of prison, literally sets him free, and on the path to greatness that maybe he was always meant to achieve (even if he trips his way into it). This boy that is tragically so much like his old captain but so beautifully unabashedly himself, is what Buggy needs to start letting go off the past, to start trying to move forward.

Maybe that's why Buggy, at what could arguably be described as his lowest moment, gets the strength to free himself from his own self imprisonment, realizing that even back then he was locking himself away and pinning his own dreams on Shanks. And, maybe for the first time ever, Buggy really own his dream. He declares to his tormentors and his crew and the entire world that; actually He wants to find the one piece, him, as captain of his own crew, this crew, not just a part of someone else's. That's his dream and he's willing to turn the world upside down to do it.

i've discussed previously that there could be a number of reasons shanks' reaction to the roguetown fight with buggy is obscured/hidden from us, but these panels… really did not need to be arranged this way?? like, i agree with goingbuggyy, it definitely feels like an intentional artistic choice and one that must have been a pita to adapt to the anime.

Now imagine Shanks thinking of Buggy every time he looks at the sea (which is all the time because the man is a damn pirate, his life literally is the sea)

How would shanks take care of his lover who got sick? Do you think he would be clueless or bad at it lol I think he would be worried about you though

Oh I don't think he's clueless or bad at it, I think he mostly plays up being a lil flighty and silly for laughs and the comfort of his friends and whatnot c:

That being said, it depends on the severity of the sicks? If you wake up and its obvious you have a cold and you're feeling crappy, Shanks is shuffling around your duties for the next few days and keeping you comfortable, making sure you have plenty of water and hot tea and soup whenever you want it. He's very doting in general, I think he takes great pains to be with you as much as possible, keeping a cool cloth on your head, helping you with things and the like.

Honestly he ends up sick more often than not when you do because he will not stop giving you kisses and cuddling your face in against his to comfort you.

If it seems more severe, or you have a fever that won't break, or you're in pain of some sort, he would likely bring Hongo in on it, and defer to his medical expertise, although he still hovers around you and makes his own checks of you while that's going on.

At the end of the day, Shanks is both a deeply competent man who is in love with you, and a Yonko with extensive reach, wealth, and influence, so whatever you ended up needing, from bedrest to surgery, he would make that the crew's priority until you were declared safe and on the mend, and be incredibly supportive and gentle with you the whole time.

I touched on this a little bit in 'A promise is a promise is a promise is a...' but I feel like it needs to be said again.

When the rest of the Roger Pirates went to Laugh Tale without the two cabin boys, there was a big difference.

Shanks chose to stay behind.

Buggy got left behind.

Now, don't get me wrong, I - Cipher - fully understand that Buggy was very sick and that taking him would have been quite harmful and negligent - not just for Buggy himself but for the rest of the crew as well, because who knew if the sickness could have spread. Also, for all we know and how things appear to be at the moment, they could have had a very narrow window of time to actually reach the island. That being said, this is not about me understanding this, but Buggy. And Buggy with his extreme inferiority complex and being, well, a child - or young teen - probably did not see the reason behind this.

To him, he probably felt like he was denied from going to Laugh Tale.

And then, after Roger's execution, when Buggy asked Shanks if they would set out for Laugh Tale and Shanks explained that he wasn't ready, Shanks once again chose not to go there. While Buggy, once again, was denied.

largely i think soulmate au’s are boring as hell (because they mostly are) and luffy defies being told what to do (though he’s also weird about things that are his) but in certain circumstances i’ll indulge (mainly if it’s funny) and so in conjunction with my koby / kobylu kick i’m positing “one of those soulmate au’s where it’s EXTREMELY RARE to begin with— in the east blue it’s considered a total myth— and the relationship is entirely up to personal interpretation it’s just an indication that you’ll change the other’s life in some intimate fashion, whether as enemies friends lovers or family” so that garp and roger can be each others soulmates but garp specifies “not in a gay way” every time he’s forced to bring it up.

i like “birthmark shaped in the impression of the first time they touch you” because the first time luffy touched koby he punched him in the face and lo does koby have an ambiguous birthmark in the exact shape of luffy’s knuckles on his forehead (he has the worst luck in the universe and it doesn’t occur to him that there’s any significance to this except that it looks weird)

the first time koby touched luffy it was shaking him by his shoulders so luffy has two perfect impressions of clearly human hands on him— for various reasons he’s well aware of the significance of this, but he oscillates violently between not liking being told what to do and liking the idea that he has a special mystery friend out there somewhere. baby ace thought it looked stupid and told him this frequently but honestly that just tilted luffy towards the special mystery friend side of the spectrum harder. the real coby wasn’t very impressive until he was— luffy understood the situation years before koby did he just didn’t tell him.
