kicking in the door to ur askbox to say — what’s your take on TTS characters + a haunted house? I gotta know who you think is the first one to accidentally sock a haunt actor in the jaw
Oh my gosh yes. I think Eugene and Lance love them. They don’t really get scared, they think it’s goofy fun, and enjoy criticizing them for being cheesy. The only times I’ve ever been to one, I prepared myself for all the jump-scares and thus, wasn’t scared. I think it’s the same for those two. I also spent the entire time flirting with the characters. Which again, I think they do that too. (Neither Off-Brand Freddy Krueger nor Haunted Science Doll have called me back 😔)
I don’t think anyone is really scared except for Rapunzel and Varian who are very jumpy, and prone to being freaked out by the spooky atmosphere if it’s well made. Varian tries to play cool like the others but is probably the first to scream out loud. I can’t see any of the others enjoying the experience except for maybe Hugo and Cat.
Lance totally accidentally punched an actor for throwing cobwebs at him, Varian accidentally punched one during a jump scare, and Cassandra punched an actor because it was being really annoying.

I've got a headcanon and I would like to know what you think about it.
Varian is actually pretty damn strong, like one day some years after the series he asks Eugene to bring a toolbox to him, but Eugene just can't get it off the ground.
Lance who sees this walks over to him and is all smug but when he tries to lift the toolbox it won't budge either.
After that they try it together, without success, and Varian finally comes over and... picks up the box with one hand like it's nothing.
Later Eugene invites Varian to a tug-of-war with him, Lance, Rapunzel and Maximus, all of them on one side and Varian on the other.
After a few minutes Varian thinks he has wasted enough of his time and pulls the rope, causing three people and a horse to land flat in the mud.
The toolbox story reminds me of a story I heard about my oldest sister when she was a kid. She had this big, wooden dollhouse, about the size of an eight year old, and she picked it up and took it all the way out from her bedroom to the living room to complain that she couldn't get it into her toybox. And my family has never let her live that down, she gets reminded of it all the time. Sorry for the random trip down memory lane, it just suddenly came to mind and I thought I'd share it. So, uh, honestly I think that by the time he's in his 20s, he can absolutely do that and Maximus will be SO sour about the tug-of-war game because he hates losing. Lance would make a joke about Varian pulling the caravan.

Ranking Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure Songs (Part 1)
Here it is, the definitive (read subjective) tier list of the top 15 Tangled The Series songs. I’ve been listening to these daily, and now you can too!
Let’s get to it:
[see Part 2 for #11-15]
Tumblr media
10. With You By My Side
Harmonies for days, plagued by relentless forshadowing aka the best way to end season 2.
Pro: these 3 compliment each other so well vocally, chills every time
Con: heavy handed foreshadowing like we get it everyone will betray everyone but for now they’re happy
Rating: 8/10
Tumblr media
9. Buddy Song
Let me reiterate THE! BUDDY! SONG! SLAPS!👏 Stream these legends and their beautiful friendship
Pro: Hilarious, stellar melody, broadway-esque extravagance
Con: a plant is trying to eat them during this song
Rating: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
8. Next Stop, Anywhere
Ultimate peppy road trip music, especially the final chorus. You can’t get better than Cassandra singing while running with horses.
Pro: each chorus adds in another singer so by the end it’s all three of them and epic
Con: too much dialogue that shouldn’t be in the soundtrack version
Rating: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
7. View From Up Here
This song is the embodiment of being free and flying. It’s hard to put into words how this song makes me feel. Classic Disney vibes.
Pro: beautiful vocals and visuals, nostalgic feelings galore
Con: Rapunzel and Cass as singing birds
Rating: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
6. Let Me Make You Proud
Time for the best character, Varian, to make his solo debut. “Let Me Make You Proud” is when I first started taking this show seriously, and it was all due to Jeremy Jordan, Alan Menken, and Glenn Slater in this show-stopper.
Pro: that final high note, Varian’s singing voice
Con: I want more after the high note, song ends too quickly
Rating: 9/10
<Attention! You have reached the halfway point. Get ready for the S Tier.>
Tumblr media
5. Let Me Make You Proud (Reprise)
If the original version made me stop and pay attention to Tangled The Series, the reprise broke me. THIS SONG is only 1 minute long. One minute spent watching my favorite character transform from a plucky kid to a tragic villain. THEY SET THE MOMENT HE BREAKS TO THE MOST HEART-WRENCHING MUSIC AND I’M NOT OVER IT.
Pro: Jeremy Jordan held back nothing as Varian in this scene. This is the most emotion-filled and shocking song of the show
Con: 1 minute long, I can’t put it higher because of that
Rating: 9.5/10
Tumblr media
4. Crossing the Line
Did someone say epic orchestra? Nobody? Oh well, too late the horns are already here.
What’s great is this is technically Cassandra’s villain song, but it doesn’t play like any villain song before it. It’s building, unapologetic, and triumphant. This is Cassandra letting her walls fall and taking what she wants, consequences be damned. Is she right? No. Is she OOC for most of season 3? Possibly. Is it cathartic to watch her wreck two seasons worth of buildup and relationships? HECK YEAH!
Pro: bass boosted “If I’m burning a bridge let it burn!”🔥
Con: This is the one time I’d add back in dialogue from the show. Cassandra’s trigger word is wait. In the episode, Rapunzel asks her to wait three times: once at the beginning of the song, once in the middle, and once at the end. Each occurrence pushes Cassandra further away, but only one makes the soundtrack recording.
Rating: 9.5/10
Tumblr media
3. Waiting In The Wings
Emmy winner, best ballad, moving work of art - all define “Waiting In The Wings”. There’s something gripping about a side character acknowledging her place and desire to be heard when the main characters continually overshadow her goals and actions. We all know the feeling, watching your life pass by feeling like you don’t get the chance to lead your own story. Wow, my kind of emo sad song. What can I say, Cassandra gets the best. This would be a classic Disney “I Want” song if the show had been a movie.
Pro: Eden Espinosa singing that key change at “I hear my cue.”
Con: Honestly can’t think of anything besides it not being my favorite, too perfect?
Rating: 10/10
Tumblr media
2. Nothing Left To Lose
Stellar concept untouched by anything Disney has made. Here we have the redeemed villain kidnapped by someone he once called friend. He sees her in her brokenness, and instead of being condensing as she has accused others of being, he tells her the truth. Nothing good can come from giving into her anger as he once did. Varian pleads with her; not to choose good because it’s the right thing to do, but to save herself from spiraling self-destruction. By meeting Cassandra where she is emotionally, Varian is the last chance to pull her from the dark. The message is merciful, well-thought out, and completely in character for Varian and Cassandra’s situation.
This song is the epitome of “Your feelings are valid, your methods of coping are not.” Each second is breathtaking from the animation to the song itself. It’s the ultimate battle between the show’s best singers and side characters while demonstrating the power one true friend can have against your own pain and anger.
And you know what hits the hardest?! Varian doesn’t give up on Cassandra in this song (we’re not talking about later episodes here). Every time she thinks she has outmaneuvered, out-argued, or out-sang him he comes back all the more ready to reach the friend he knows is buried deep in her heart. It takes her physically removing him from her tower and caging him ON A CLIFF for the main section of the song to finish.
But that’s not where it ends. A now dejected Cassandra, reminiscent of her “Waiting In The Wings” motivations sings her true feelings now when nobody can hear. “Now, I have nothing... ... ... left... to lose...”. That long pause she takes after “I have nothing” allows the first half to stand on its own. This is Cassandra realizing Varian’s truth. By pushing her last chance at redemption away, by removing her last chance at a friend, she truly has nothing left to lose.
I could go on and on about this song: the 360° turn in 2D animation, the way Varian and Cassandra sing over each other at the song’s climax, the lyrics, Varian’s vulnerability, Cassandra at her most dramatic, and more. I’ll save you the time, it’s incredible.
Pro: THE BEST DUET why are you still here go listen to this song! Jeremy and Eden recorded it together in-person for a reason. It’s too good for anything less. Also, another Emmy nominated song
Con: It could lose its Emmy nomination which would be unjust yet poetic? Cause you know, “Nothing Left To Lose” loses would make a funny headline
Rating: 10/10

1. Ready As I’ll Ever Be
There’s a reason seemingly half the fandom joined due to this song. It encapsulates everything I love about this show flaws and all. Varian gets a solo! Cass gets a solo! Rapunzel gets a solo! Everyone gets a solo! Each time I listen it gets better. Nothing screams epic battle prep song like “Ready As I’ll Ever Be”. Plot and singing-wise this song has it all.
What makes this song a winner is my inability to analyze it. It’s not a song I think about, it’s one I enjoy and constantly replay. The impact this song has had on me and it’s ♥️❤️💕💜💛💖💞💚🧡💝💙-ness makes it the greatest song in Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.
Pro: ultimate hype song, villain Varian, mind-blowingly incredible
Con: the king sings (easy to ignore)
Rating: 10/10
Thanks for reading!

Tangled retrospective: Cass and Varian
SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE SERIES AHEAD
There are a lot of great songs in tts, both performed by the movie and original characters. Rapunzel gets some beautiful songs like, “Hurt incantation” and “I’d give anything”.
But the big run-away hits, and the ones I wanna gush about, is the songs made by the two fan favorite original characters - Varian and Cassandra. These two villain-disasters parallel each other in such a beautiful way. You could watch “Ready as I’ll ever be”, “Crossing the line” and “Nothing left to lose”, and get a self contained story that works regardless of whether you’ve watched the show or not.
Besides the songs being awesome, I think thats a big reason for why these three songs in particular have gotten so popular.
So thats how we’re gonna look at them!
In “Ready as I’ll ever be”, there’s this kid who clearly feels hurt by others and is pushing himself into a destructive spiral of hate and resentment to get back at them, damn the consequences.
Tumblr media
Now it's time to step up
Or it's time to back down
And there's only one answer for me
Then in “Crossing the line”, there’s this lady who also feels hurt. She’s tired of waiting for her chance in the spotlight, so she’s grabbing the spotlight herself, consequences be damned
(And here, we’re already seeing the parallels to Varian. Because Cass most of all just wants to be heard and acknowledged)
Tumblr media
You don't know how much I've been denied
Well, I'm not being patient anymore
I'm crossing the line!
And all of this culminates in “Nothing left to lose”, where the two go up against each other. He has had time to calm down and gain perspective, where’s she’s still in the thick of self-justified anger and resentment.
He knows now where this road ends and it doesn’t end anywhere good.  He knows that there’s more than one answer and he knows what happens if you refuse to back down after crossing the line.
Consequences will catch up to you, whether you like it or not.
Tumblr media
Listen please
You’ve lost your grip and lost your mind
All’s not lost don’t be so blind
I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that Tangled the Series is freaking great.

A twist on the Cass & Varian parts of Cass' Revenge? You could super angsty with the kidnapping scene or the 'tell me the third incantation' bit, or heck, hurt/comfort up in the tower? :>
AO3 Link is Here!
“You know,” Varian says, as Cassandra shoves him up the tower, forcing him to walk up and up and up those spiraling steps. “Usually, um, when someone is—trying to get revenge, you know—they have a reason?”
The world is spinning before his eyes, and his breath feels sickly and sticky—the truth serum is sweet, all the better for baking, but on its own it’s almost too sweet, like he’s drunk solid sugary syrup and now the aftertaste is clinging to his tongue. It’s gross. Still an ingenious invention that Varian is very proud of because hell yeah, chemistry, but also—yuck.
“Shut up,” says Cassandra, and a rock pokes his back in warning. Keep walking, that’s what that means, and something about that grits at his teeth. She’s been short and curt the whole damn time—one-word orders, cold demands, chilling smiles and taunts. It’s gone right past frightening to just plain annoying, and Varian cranes back his neck, eyes narrowed, trying to catch her gaze.
“No, really,” he says, suddenly sharp. “I’m not kidding. Why are you doing this? All this? What’s it for?”
“Nothing you need to know,” Cassandra says. Something curls at her lip. “Hasn’t Rapunzel told you already, anyhow?”
“You’re kidnapping me,” Varian reminds her. “It’s definitely my business now, thanks.” And as for that second bit— “She did. I heard Rapunzel’s side.” He takes a chance, turns on his heels, forcing them both to a stop on the steps. He meets her eyes and lifts his chin. “Now I’m asking for yours.”
Cassandra stops too, looking up the steps; her eyes flash, and she looks momentarily furious—stops, and looks away. She stares off into the distance and her jaw clenches. She seems torn— caught between Varian’s offer and some other, quieter whisper, some urge to ignore all he says and just keep going.
“You think I wouldn’t understand?” Varian asks, suddenly desperate, suddenly afraid. There is a sense of—of being caught, here, of a thread fraying thin and worn between them, and if he doesn’t reach her here then he will never reach her again. His voice rises, incredulous. “Me?”
Something in his tone must hit true, because she almost seems to smile—a reluctant twitch of the lips, an almost-acknowledgment of the irony. Cassandra’s eyes turn to him. “It’s not revenge,” she says, sudden and clear and sure. “It’s just… taking back what should have been mine in the first place.”
“And… what’s that?”
Her eyes narrow. “A destiny.”
“…Right.” Varian feels unsettled, off-guard. He doesn’t—he doesn’t understand that. What she’s saying, why she’s saying it like that. He was there for the fight in the tunnels— he saw what she did to keep Rapunzel occupied and to spirit Varian away. That… wasn’t revenge? That wasn’t anger?
You almost killed us, he thinks, and gets the sudden sense that he is out of his depth. But he knows better than to say that. So he says instead, quietly— “And… how are you planning to do that?”
“Easy.” Cassandra’s chin lifts. Her hand brushes by her heart—  the shining blue-white gem. “When Rapunzel comes for you…”
She’s going to fight, Varian realizes, with sudden horror and even deeper, awful understanding. She’s seeking a fight. And it’s awful, because this, this Varian does understand—hurting, and taking, and drawing blood for no reason other than the feeling you deserve a little payback. But he also knows how this story ends. Cassandra is throwing everything away, everything she has left to lose, and in the end she’ll gain nothing at all.
“You… you’re going to kill Rapunzel.”
“If she forces me too.”
He says nothing to that. He has nothing at all to say to that. He keeps walking, cold all the way to his bones, and Cassandra walks beside him now, ahead of him, her head raised and eyes set.
He understands now. He knows what this is. Varian’s a hostage. He’s the bait. And it burns low and dark and furious in his chest, like a bitter pill he cannot swallow, and Varian looks at Cassandra’s back and thinks—  it doesn’t even hurt her.
The idea of fighting Rapunzel. Of hurting her friends. She’s so convinced she’s right that nothing else will shake her out of it.
Varian knows that mindset. Varian knows that certainty. And he remembers, sudden and cold, the way that certainty crumbled. Bit by bit. Little by little. Crushed down into pieces with every doubt that festered in his mind.
He doesn’t have time to convince Cassandra slowly.
“It’s almost over, Varian,” Cassandra says, and it’s almost as though she’s trying to sound comforting. “You get it, right?”
“Yeah,” Varian says. His voice is very soft. He keeps his eyes on her back, and already can feel his heart sink. The truth serum on his tongue tastes sweet and sickly.
“I get it,” Varian says, and then he smiles. His hands tremble and then still. Rapunzel stopped him, once, months ago, from sacrificing himself for Corona. But Rapunzel isn’t here now. And while Cassandra’s choices aren’t Varian’s responsibility…
Home, he thinks. Dad. Old Corona. Rapunzel and all the others.
If he can inspire even the slightest doubt, if he can crumble that certainty even a little—  then finally, Varian knows, he’ll have done something right.
“Hey, Cass? Did you know the truth serum lasts for almost a few hours? Fun fact!”
Her eyes flash back at him. She scowls. “Don’t call me—”
“I just want you to know that,” Varian says. “I want you to know this is true.”
“The hell are you talking about?”
Here’s the problem with kidnapping Varian. Because he wants to do better. Because Varian wants to be kind. But once upon a time Varian was angry, and he hurt people— and as much as he hates it, he still remembers how to do it.
“You almost killed us,” Varian says, calm. “You almost killed Eugene, and Lance, and Pascal, and Rapunzel.”
“I didn’t—”
“And even if I do survive this,” Varian continues, ignoring her. “I want you to know that you almost killed me too. Because I didn’t have to do this.” He smiles. It’s shaky. “But you’re scaring me, Cass. And you forced me to. You made me choose this.” The smile goes stiff. “You monster.”
And before Cassandra can react, before she can speak or startle or do anything else other than go pale around the eyes, Varian steps back off the staircase into open air, and lets himself drop.

Are We Forgetting Something?
Just finished editing Chapter 17 of Coffee Tastes Better When I Drink It With You!!! Please bear in mind this was written before Christmas but I wrote loads and had to cut it down and edit it a lot. I hope you enjoy the double update!! <3
------------------------
Hugo grumbled as he woke up, Ruddiger jumping onto his chest and taking his place there as though he were a king taking his place on a throne. He purred for a second, his rough tongue licking Hugo’s face and jolting the man to fully being awake rather than his dazed state. “Alright, alright you dumb cat.” He muttered as he sat up, feeling around on his bedside table as he searched for his glasses and put them on. As the world became clearer, he glanced down to his left, taking a moment to glance down at his fiance with a smile playing on his lips. He looked beautiful. Really, really beautiful.
Hair was sprawled out on the pillow around him like a halo as he snored, his mouth open as he slept. It was a bad habit, really, and he’d noticed his fiance never grew out of it. It was cute as hell though, the other always pulling a face when he woke up at how dry his mouth was. Hugo let out a little chuckle at the thought of it. His fiance really was the biggest dork ever, huh? Still, he admired the man before him as he slept, taking in the little freckles and marks over his face, Hugo reaching over to gently brush a strand of hair away from Varian’s face and being careful not to wake the man up, and, as if he was wired to ruin the moment, Ruddiger took a scratch at Hugo’s forearm. “Ow you fat bastard! Fine, I’ll go get you some food, but you fuckin’ owe me for this.” He grumbled as he rose to his feet, the glint of Varian’s engagement ring not going unnoticed as he made his way out of the room. He couldn’t help the little smile that took over his features as he was reminded of last night.
As he walked through the tiny apartment, he couldn’t help the feeling he was forgetting something, his hands instinctively moving to lift the cat bowl from the floor and placing it on the counter. He took a look at the clock. 10:27am. Why did he feel like he was forgetting something? Sinking back into the routine, he took out a sachet and emptied the contents into the metallic bowl, Ruddiger deciding to just jump on the counter and eat it right then and there. “You really are a fat bitch, huh.” He muttered under his breath, and he could swear the cat hissed at him in response as he took their mugs from the cupboard and began to boil some water to make a coffee. He really couldn’t shake the feeling he’d forgotten something...was it Donella’s birthday? No, that was in February...Eugene’s? No...the arrogant bastard would have reminded them at least a billion times if that was the case.
Arms wrapped around his waist, almost scaring the shit out of him as his muscles stiffened and a loud chuckle sounded from behind him as Varian pressed a kiss to the back of his shoulder. “Hey baby…” He whispered, and Hugo could tell that the bastard was grinning smugly as he continued to press kisses against the skin. “Sleep well, my handsome fiance..?”
“Yes, very, until your bitch of a cat decided to wake me up because he decided his insatiable appetite needed to be at least slightly satisfied in order for him to be happy.” Hugo complained, though his boyfriend simply let out a soft laugh. “Don’t laugh! Our son is literally the worst and he knows what he’s doing because he never wakes you up! Only me!”
“Maybe if you stopped calling him fat, he would hate you a bit less.” Varian whispered, Hugo turning to retaliate before a kiss was placed to his lips and, miraculously, he forgot what he was talking about. They settled into a nice, slow kiss, Varian gently pushing his fiance against the counter as the blond’s hand moved to entangle themselves in raven locks. They would’ve gone further too, if it weren’t for the sudden buzzing and ringing emitting from Varian’s phone in their bedroom. Slowly, the younger one broke the kiss. “Who the fuck is even calling me..” He groaned as he left his boyfriend standing in the kitchen, a childish groan leaving his lips. “Oh fuck. Hugo, remember the day?”
“No actually-” The blond paused. He checked the clock again. 10:34am. He left the kitchen, the fat cat finishing off his food as he stepped into the living room. The Christmas tree was still up. He’d proposed last night as an early Christmas present for Varian, and he’d said yes. That meant yesterday was Christmas Eve and today was…”Shit. Varian, we’re late. We’re late!” he yelled out, rushing into the bedroom to get changed, his boyfriend having already remembered the occasion. Quickly, he scrambled to get dressed, almost tripping over as he pulled on some black slacks and a green dress shirt, buttoning it up and hastily fixing his hair. “Oh fuck, Rapunzel is gonna kill us for being late! Shit!”
“Don’t you think I already know that!” Varian yelled in response, his choice of outfit being jeans, a white dress shirt and a cyan sweater over the top. Joining Hugo at the dresser, they both desperately tried to fix their hair before rushing to the hall and pulling their shoes on. He had to be honest though, his boyfriend still looked damn good, even when he was rushing to look his best. He was a sight to behold - a sight that made Hugo’s knees feel very very weak and caused him not to think straight. His outfit looked good too, especially when he pulled on his coat and wrapped Hugo’s old scarf around his neck to prepare himself for the bitter weather outside. “You ready to go and get murdered by Rapunzel?”
Hugo took his boyfriend’s hand, raising it to his lips and pressing a gentle kiss to the back of his palm, a smile on his face as he saw the other’s face flush red. No matter how much affection he showered the other with, he could never seem to get used to it. It was absolutely adorable in his opinion, the man never ceased to warm his heart. He loved that about him. The same flush always came to his cheeks at the slightest gestures. “Ready as I’ll ever be, darling.” He responded, unlocking the door and heading out into the hallway.
Walking down the stairs hand in hand was always awkward, the stairs too narrow to let more than one person walk. It honestly seemed like a fire hazard in Hugo’s opinion, but the whole building was essentially a living deathtrap so he wasn’t really surprised. But it was still home. Well, not technically. Hugo’s head raised to look at Varian, who jumped the last two stairs instead of walking down them and a wide smile grew on his face, the joy on his face infectious. Home was wherever he was with Varian. His eyes drifted down to the other’s ring and his smile grew wider, if that was even possible at this point with how happy he already was.
“I wanna take the motorbike. We’re already too late and walking will slow us down.” Varian rambled as he intertwined his fingers with Hugo’s, the pair already heading over to the aforementioned vehicle. As soon as the green metal came into sight, Varian perked up with a smile and shuffled even closer to his boyfriend. Hugo swung his leg over, his boyfriend following suit and wrapping his arms around his waist before proceeding to drive through the city roads en route to Rapunzel and Eugene’s cottage.
Varian’s head rested against Hugo’s back, the smile on the blond’s face never disappearing as he felt the warmth of the man behind him and the gentle sigh of wonder as he watched the busy city turn into serene countryside. He’d never felt more loved than in that moment, the other man absolutely full of wonder as he looked out at the changing landscapes that he knew all too well. Quietly, Hugo pulled into the driveway of the cottage and took the key out of the ignition, swinging his leg off the bike and helping steady his fiance as he did the same. “Damn baby, you fell right into my arms. You alright?” He chuckled softly, earning a gentle shove as he simply burst out into laughter. Hand in hand, the pair opened the gate and made their way up to the door.
Cassandra opened the door, Irene standing beside her, and both with disappointed expressions on their faces. Cass had...definitely changed, her once bobbed hair now in an undercut with shaved sides. Not to say it didn’t suit her - it definitely did. She looked great. Irene looked different too, her once long hair cut into a bob. “You two are late. Y’know she’s gonna kill you right?” The raven haired woman stated before losing the facade and pulling the boys into a hug. “C’mere you gay nerds, I’ve missed you two so so much…”
“We’ve missed you too, Cassie.” Varian replied, smiling up at the woman before letting Irene pull them into an embrace as well. Hugo had never really gotten used to that - all the cuddling and hugging...Donella never was one for that kind of thing. She always tended to keep her distance from Hugo and his emotions, other than the time that Ulla had shown up and everything had gone to shit…but he preferred not to think about that. Not when it was Varian’s favourite time of the year (though Hugo much preferred Halloween, like an excuse to scare the crap out of little kids all while dressing up in a cheap costume? It was like heaven!).
A gasp from down the hall broke him from his thoughts, Rapunzel standing there with her arms folded and a frown on her face. Hugo wasn’t even sure whether he’d seen her frown before - it felt terrifying. “So you wanna explain why you were late?” She raised her eyebrow, the boys stuttering excuses before the woman practically jumped into their arms. They stumbled back into the wall as the woman broke their ribs in the biggest, tightest hug they’d ever been in, before pulling away and gasping to grab their hands and stared and their fingers. “Oh my god! When did this happen? Who asked first? You have to tell me everything!” She giggled as she pulled them along and sat them down, Lance and the girls waving to them as Eugene sat on the floor.
“Oh um, well…last night, I was waiting for Hugo to come home from work to propose, and he decided to propose when I was planning to. Hugo asked first and...I said yes if he would say yes too so...yeah!” Varian laughed, explaining last night as if it wasn’t like some weird cliche moment from a movie or a book. Hugo wrapped his arm around the other’s shoulder, pressing a kiss to his jawline with a soft smile and listening as Rapunzel rambled on about something or the other. He didn’t really listen though, he simply kept holding his boyfriend close to him and playing with his hair happily.
“Rapunzel, did you tell them the news?” Eugene asked from his place on the floor, a wide grin on his face as he rose to his feet and wrapped his arms around his wife’s waist, pressing a kiss to the junction between her neck and her collarbone. When he was younger, Hugo would’ve gagged at the gesture, but now...well, he knew he was just as sappy as the man in front of him. He was rather happy, really, that he and Eugene managed to eventually get along, especially after their little talk last Christmas. He’d never admit it but he kinda liked the guy.
“Oh, yeah! I’m pregnant!” she smiled widely, Varian gasping and immediately rising to his feet (much to Hugo’s dismay) and swarming her with questions. Hugo simply nodded in congratulations towards Eugene, the man giving him a smile and nodding back in return as he moved away from his wife and headed towards the kitchen. Yep, he definitely liked Eugene.
The pair must’ve rambled for hours about names and genders, until Rapunzel finally put the conversation to a close. “Anyway, it’s time for food!” she laughed cheerfully as she rose to her feet and walked towards the kitchen, everyone following in her footsteps and taking their seats at the table. Hugo’s, thankfully, was next to Varian and Irene, the woman paying more attention to her fiancee and the other people at the dinner table than Hugo. He’d always found Christmas awkward, having never been able to celebrate it when he was living with Donella. They’d always found it difficult to get money, so when they had it, they wouldn’t spend it on something like Christmas, so as soon as he came here with Varian, who adored Christmas and spent it with his family...it was a very sharp 180 to what he was used to. He didn’t know how to react, so he simply held his fiance’s hand under the table as he ate and listened to the conversations taking place.
After dinner had finished, Varian and Hugo took their seat on the couch, their arms around each other as people slowly started to leave. They could stay for longer - there was no rush and they felt terrible about arriving late, so it wouldn’t hurt to stay a little while. Hugo’s fingers threaded through Varian’s hair as he pressed a kiss to the man’s temple and stared out the window. Snow was now falling quite heavy - it would probably make the roads dangerous. He’d loved snow but...he knew Varian couldn’t leave, the man’s breathing already quickening as Hugo shuffled to shield his vision.
“You two can stay here tonight, boys. The roads aren’t safe.” Rapunzel replied as she moved towards the window with a frown, watching the little, white flakes hit the dirt roads and stick to it. “You can have the spare room, but please, don’t try and drive, okay?” She smiled sadly at Hugo, the blond nodding in agreement. There was no way in hell he was driving anywhere in a snowstorm when his boyfriend was here, not after what he’d told him on the night they’d confessed their feelings to each other. And, as he locked eyes with Rapunzel, he could see all the guilt in her eyes from the past few years. He felt bad for her, really. Her and Varian were quite similar in that sense - both of them had never really forgiven themselves for how they’d acted back then.
“We’ll head upstairs.” Hugo stated, rising to his feet and gently pulling his boyfriend along with him towards the staircase. They ascended the creaking stairs before Varian took the lead. Hugo had never really been upstairs in the cottage before, hell, he didn’t even know it had an upstairs until he found the staircase. His fiance pushed open an oak door, showing a small guest room, decorated in typical Rapunzel style decor, with paintings on the wall of different flowers, birds and stars, and bookshelves full of books pressed against the wall. In the middle of the room was a double bed, Varian immediately pulling Hugo towards it after he shut the door and virtually pulled the man down to lie beside him. “How’re you holding up, goggles?”
“Not very well. I just wanna cuddle and sleep.” Varian muttered as he buried his head into his chest, Hugo being able to feel the tears soaking through. A gentle sigh left his mouth as he played with his fiance’s hair and pressed kisses against this forehead, singing a little melody to him in an attempt to soothe the man. Slowly, he felt the tears stop pooling on his chest as Varian muttered against his shirt. “I love you, Hugh. I don’t tell you enough...I love you so so much..” he choked out, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry I keep acting this way-”
“Don’t apologise, sweetheart. It’s okay.” He whispered. “It's okay to cry and be upset - I get it. It’ll all be alright. I’m here and nothing can hurt you.” Hugo reassured the man in his arms and, eventually, the body beside him lost its tension as he fell asleep, gentle snores soon following and Hugo moved back to see the man’s mouth wide open, a sad little chuckle leaving his lips as he looked down at the sight. Quietly, he brought him closer, resting his chin on top of the man’s head as he stared at the wall.
He really wished he could take all of his boyfriend’s pain away and kiss away all of his tears, though he knew he couldn’t. It hurt him to see him hurting - to hear his boyfriend in so much pain...he let out yet another sigh as he closed his eyes and wrapped his arms around his waist even tighter than before. “I love you so much, Varian.” He whispered into the air, closing his eyes and letting himself fall asleep.

(i know you said no NLTL, anon, but i want to state for emphasis that this was the first time in the whole conversation i mentioned NLTL at all LMAO with NLTL the first time around i said nothing and then promptly had a whole meltdown about the janus point nightmare sequence that mostly involved a lot of “WHAT! BLUE!”)
(at this point i also want to note that the chat is littered with pictures of zhan tiri that i took with my phone on account of directTV not letting me take screenshots i was VERY excited about gremlin baby finally going feral)

bestworstcase: YEAH
hemlock: you were right so many murder attempts
bestworstcase: she did not fuck around
and then the conversation meandered into speculation (i really thought cass knew who zhan tiri was RIP) and the strings/bitter snow cinematic universe lmao but the POINT IS
i still wholeheartedly agree with everything i was excited about on the night the ep dropped and ig this reiterates or illustrates or something what i meant when i said that, while i think the technical execution of cassandra’s villain arc is...not good, the beats and emotions and drama and cass-ziti team-up aspect of it all is EXACTLY what i wanted out of the series and it does get me very jazzed.
i like it when characters are terrible >:)

Prompt: (?) Varian and Hugo go on an adventure, but in the end one of their crushes gets found out
Ok so my thought on this was 2am ice cream run lol!! So have some high school boys being awkward as fuck! With just a sprinkling of bad dad! Enjoy!!!!!
Hugo drummed his fingers against the steering wheel of the car, idly scrolling through his phone as he waited for Varian. He should’ve known the younger wouldn’t be ready in time, whenever he said ten minutes it usually meant thirty. Although he couldn’t really blame him, they were sneaking out at two in the morning and Varian’s dad was extremely protective. It had become a tradition of sorts, ever since Hugo got his license he’d pick up Varian and they’d go on some kind of nighttime adventure. They usually ended up at the nearby park, talking under the stars until the sun started to rise. He would never regret finally swallowing his pride and asking for Varian’s help fixing up his truck, he was easily his best friend now, but he’d be lying to himself if he said he didn’t want more. They had a rough start but after the hours spent together working on his car, which Hugo still didn’t know why Varian agreed to help, they grew closer, and he wanted to grow closer still. He thought it was just a crush at first, his adoptive mom, Donella, told him it was, but the more he denied his feelings the stronger they grew. Logically he knew the relationship probably wouldn’t last, he was only sixteen after all, that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to try.
His eyes darted to the two tickets to the homecoming dance that stuck out ever so slightly from the sun visor. Dances weren’t really his thing, he just knew that Varian really wanted to go, so he could sacrifice a night for Varian’s happiness. And tonight was the night he was going to ask. His stomach doing a flip at just the thought, his cheeks heating up. He jumped as the passenger side door opened, dropping his phone.
“Shit.” Hugo grumbled, reaching down and fumbling around for his phone, smiling in success when he found it.
“Sorry.” Varian said, slinging his backpack into the backseat as he climbed in, the dark circles under his eyes evident even in the dim lighting.
Hugo frowned at that, whenever Varian brought his bag it wasn’t a good sign. He didn’t know much about Varian’s home life, but he did know his dad could be intense. He didn’t think he ever hit Varian, although he had heard their screaming matches from time to time, and there were the odd times that he’d kick Varian out of the house for days on end. It was a strange relationship Varian had with his dad, he either didn’t let him out of his sight or was putting Varian down, there was no in between. Hugo watched as Varian closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the headrest. He looked absolutely exhausted, his dark lashes resting against his cheeks as his chest rose and fell softly. He almost looked like he was sleeping if it wasn’t for the way his eyebrows were furrowed together, a frown on his face. Hugo gently brushed Varian’s bangs from his face, the younger’s eyes opening, his blue eyes blinking up at Hugo. Hugo quickly pulled his hand away, his cheeks reddening again.
“So, where do you want to go?” Hugo asked, his eyes on the road in front of them, even though he had yet to move, hell he hadn’t even turned on the car. He didn’t ask about the bag, he didn’t ask if he needed a place to stay, it was just something that they didn’t talk about, and he absolutely would not ask if he was okay. If Varian wanted to talk about it he would, and Varian extended him the same courtesy, he never talked about his biological family.
“I don’t know.” Varian said, nibbling at his bottom lip as he glanced back at his house, a light flickering off in one of the windows. Varian squeezed his eyes shut again for a second as he let out a sigh. “I could really go for some ice cream.”
Hugo resisted the urge to brush Varian’s hair out of his face again, Varian glancing over at him, his eyes shining with unshed tears. Instead Hugo nodded, turning on the car. “Ice cream sounds amazing.”
It didn’t take them long to find a place for ice cream and soon enough they were sitting in the bed of the truck ice cream in hand. Hugo shot a quick text to Donella letting her know where he was. He was lucky she gave him enough freedom to come and go as he pleased as long as she knew where he was. It was nice, but sometimes he wished she cared a little more, he rarely ever got a reply from her. He tucked his phone away in his pocket, licking his ice cream cone before it could get on his hands. “I thought you’d want to go to the park.” Hugo said around a mouthful of ice cream.
“I guess not.” Varian said with a shrug, stabbing at his sundae with his spoon rather aggressively, paying no mind to the melted ice cream that leaked onto his hands. “I needed a different adventure. Change of scenery, you know?”
“I still wouldn’t call ice cream an adventure.” Hugo said with a laugh.
“Then you’re missing out.” Varian responded, using his spoon to point at Hugo, the ice cream splattering across Hugo’s face.
“Hey!” Hugo shouted, wiping the ice cream away, Varian laughing all the while. Hugo couldn’t help but smile himself.
“I’m sorry! I really didn’t mean for that to happen.” Varian chuckled, holding his stomach as he continued to laugh, his ice cream now abandoned.
Hugo hummed, cleaning his glasses with his shirt, his cone balancing precariously on the vehicle. “And I didn’t mean to do this.” Hugo lunged, his fingers digging into Varian’s sides. It got the desired effect, Varian laughing even harder as he rolled back, trying to fight off Hugo’s hands.
“Please… Hugh… I’m sorry.” Varian breathed out between laughs, tears streaming down his face as Hugo continued his attack.
“Well, since you asked so nicely.” Hugo teased, smiling down at Varian, practically on top of the other boy, his fingers finally slowing to a stop. His hands still lingered on Varian’s sides, watching as Varian’s laughter died down and he wiped the tears from his eyes, his chest rising and falling rapidly as he caught his breath.
Varian awkwardly cleared his throat, his cheeks reddening as he took note of their position. “Umm, could you- uh, you know?”
“Oh, sorry.” Hugo said, his own face flushing as he became hyper aware of their position. He scrambled off of Varian, swinging his legs back over the end of the truck already missing the warmth Varian provided. He focused on his ice cream cone, ruined on the ground, instead of the way he so badly wanted to keep Varian pinned there, kissing his soft lips, the taste of ice cream still lingering on them.
“Thank you.” Varian said, shimmying to the edge of the truck as well, his mostly melted sundae in hand.
“What?” Hugo asked, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion as he glanced up at Varian. He almost wished he hadn’t, the younger looking up at him through his eyelashes, the street light hitting him just right to make it look like the blue in his hair was glowing, he was almost otherworldly looking in the best way.
“I just- thank you. For always being here for me, for being so understanding. Just for being a good friend, I guess.” Varian said, returning his attention to swirling the melted ice cream with his spoon. Maybe it was a trick of the light, but he swore there was a blush coating Varian’s cheeks. It was probably just wishful thinking on his part.
Hugo nodded, ignoring the slight sting of being called a friend. “Uh, you too. With the whole friend thing.” Hugo said, lightly punching Varian’s shoulder in what he hoped was a friendly manner. Hugo cringed at his own action, why did he have to be so damn awkward when he was trying so hard not to be awkward? Varian must’ve thought it was odd, the car shifting with his movements.
“Umm-“
“I got you something.” Hugo interrupted, deciding it was now or never. If he thought about it too much he’d back out.
“You did?” Varian asked, finally giving up on his ice cream and setting it to the side, his eyes twinkling at Hugo’s words.
“Yeah, uh, just wait here for a second.” Hugo said, leaping off the back of the truck, his hands sweating as he grabbed the tickets. He took a deep breath, trying desperately to calm his beating heart to no avail. This was it he was going to ask Varian to the dance. Their relationship would never be the same regardless of what Varian said, things would be different, there would be no going back. There would be no going back. Hugo slowly lowered the tickets, his face dropping as he realized he couldn’t go through with it, he couldn’t risk losing Varian forever. He stuffed the tickets into his jacket pocket with a sigh of defeat, plastering the fakest smile on his face as he made his way back around. “You know, silly me, I must’ve forgotten it at the house.”
“That’s okay.” Varian said, a brief flash of disappointment flashing across his face before he hopped off the bed of the truck and threw his ice cream out. “Drop me off at Rapunzel’s?”
“Sure.” Hugo responded simply, settling behind the wheel as Varian got into the passenger's seat. It wasn’t the first time he’d dropped Varian off at his cousins house. Apparently her and her fiancé knew the extent of Varian’s home situation and wanted to get custody. Varian, however, refused to leave his dad. And that’s about the extent Hugo knew. He wished he knew more so he could help, but he also respected Varian enough not to push for information. He wanted to help, he just didn’t know how.
“You could stay at my place.” Hugo blurted out, the words ringing in the silence of the vehicle. He could feel his cheeks beating up once again, the longer the silence went on the redder they became. He didn’t dare look in Varian’s direction.
“Wha-“
“Never mind! To Rapunzel’s then?” Hugo replied hurriedly, starting the car and driving down the familiar road to Rapunzel’s house before Varian even gave a slight nod. Silence filled the car once again, it always did on nights like this. Hugo hated nights like this when Varian looked so down on himself, when he wasn’t his chatty self, when he was sad. He wanted to take all that away even if just for a moment, but he was too scared to do anything, to pull Varian into his arms and hold him tight, to stroke his hair and whisper soothing words, to place a reassuring kiss to his lips as they talked about everything and anything. He was too scared and it fucking sucked.
“Thanks for driving me.” Varian’s voice brought him back to reality, the car stopped in front of the modest home, the white picket fence blinding even in the middle of the night.
“No problem.” Hugo said, shaking his head in hopes of clearing it from the last of those pesky thoughts. Varian shot him an odd look but otherwise didn’t say anything on his behavior, before getting out of the car, Hugo followed suit. He grabbed Varian’s backpack from the backseat, slinging it over his shoulder as he jogged around the car to meet Varian. “I’m serious, Goggles, if you ever want,” need, but he didn’t dare say the word, Varian would outright deny him if he did. “To stay at my place Don won’t mind. I- we’d love to have you.”
Varian smiled softly, the soft yellow light flickering on in the house behind him making his eyes sparkle. “Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind.” Varian said, taking his bag from Hugo, nether noticing the two tickets that fell from Hugo’s jacket.
Hugo’s hand lingered perhaps a moment too long over Varian’s as he handed over the bag, but the younger didn’t say anything in protest. “Goodnight.” Hugo said, daring to place a soft kiss to Varian’s cheek, his own cheeks heating up as he did, his lips tingling from where they had connected with Varian’s soft skin. He didn’t wait for a response, a wide smile on his face as he got back into his car and drove away, sparing a glance at the rear view mirror to see Varian place a hand over his cheek, a soft lopsided smile on his face.
“Goodnight.” Varian whispered, his heart skipping a beat in his chest, his cheek unusually cold now that Hugo’s lips weren’t there. He let his hand drop as he watched the car disappear around the corner, an odd sensation filling him. He’d never really given much thought to his relationship with Hugo outside of friendship, but now he knew he really should. Hugo had always been there for him, willingly dropping things on a dime to come to his aid, he was smart and funny, and charming, and despite his snarky and stubborn attitude he put others first. The more he thought about it the more he was starting to realize he might actually have feelings for his best friend, and for some reason that thought was more comforting than scary. Varian smiled to himself, shooting Hugo a quick goodnight text for good measure before turning towards the house, something crinkling underneath his shoe. He bent down, eyebrows furrowed as he picked up the wrinkled slips of paper. His lips quickly turned to a smile when he realized what it was, two tickets to the homecoming dance.
Varian brought them close to his chest, a giddy laugh bubbling up as he smiled into the night sky. Things were looking up for once in his life. He couldn’t wait to spend homecoming with Hugo. He could have Rapunzel help him pick out an outfit, maybe even convince his dad to let him stay at her house for the weekend. One thing he knew for certain was that he now needed to ask Hugo, and he was okay with that.

Eugene Appreciation Day Six: Team Awesome
Summary: What if Eugene saw Varian fall in Cassandra's Revenge?
Read on ao3
@fishskiin
Eugene realised that, as much as he thought he was angry with Cassandra, he wasn't really furious until he saw Varian hanging over the air in a cage of black rocks. He had been sad, because Cassandra was his friend and she betrayed them; he had been frustrated, because she kept hurting Rapunzel, who had her flaws, but nothing that couldn't be solved with a discussion; he was concerned, for his friends and for Corona, concerned at what she would be willing to do.
Then, she kidnapped Varian and put him in a cage high above the ground, and he felt furious.
Varian, for his part, was scared but more focused on the last incantation than on himself, letting Eugene do all the worrying about the empty space under them, and how easily Cassandra could let them fall. When the rocks started retreating, Eugene had half a mind to curse - until Varian called his name fearfully, and he realised there were more important things. He took the kid's hand in his, squeezing it tightly and hoping he would understand that Eugene intended to defend him against Cassandra if need to be.
Well, except that she squeezed him between black rocks, and he was helpless to do anything but glare at her. She was using him to pressure Rapunzel into fighting and Eugene hated it, but when he tried to talk, the rocks squeezed tighter, and he lost his breath with a groan.
The next part was a little blurry. Or, more exactly, a little too bright for Eugene to follow. Rapunzel was shining and floating and exuding power like a goddess and, once Eugene's heart stopped beating so loud with anxiety, he would be awed by her beauty. She was fighting Cassandra, who was also glowing because nothing could ever be easy in their lives, and Eugene still struggled to breath, both because of the rocks and the sheer energy he was faced with. Some part of his brain told him he was also cursed with the "birthday should involve a near death experience" special, and he would have laughed if it wasn't his friends being in danger too.
Then, Rapunzel and Cassandra clashed together and the energy was enough to break the black rocks surrounding him, and push him away a few feet. He was fighting the strong gusts of wind when he heard a cry from behind him, and turned just soon enough to see Varian being pushed over the edge.
Eugene thought he screamed but he wasn't sure - there was too much noise all around and blood was rushing to his ears.
He scrambled after him, the wind pushing him harshly to his knees midway - but he got up again, he ignored the pain in his bones and rose up because he needed to see- needed to go and try to fix this, even if it already felt like he was too late because Varian fell and they were so high up the ground-
Eugene stumbled again near the edge and crawled the few inches left, his head sticking out over the staggering height. He felt sick, Varian's cry of terror like a twisted knife in his body - and Eugene knew something about those.
It felt like a dream, then, when he saw the tiny figures right under him - first a recognisable red-head, Catalina, then Angry right at her side, Lance and… Varian, in Lance's arms. It took several more seconds before Eugene managed to breathe again, laughing nervously as he was overwhelmed with relief. He closed his eyes and thought numbly that they had been lucky, so so lucky, but his body was still thrumming with anxiety and fear.
The energy of the sundrop and the moonstone disappeared and Eugene got shakily to his feet, running to the second focus of his worry: Rapunzel. He joked that she had been awesome, and she was too exhausted and wrung out to see that his smile wasn't quite reaching his eyes - which was good since Varian didn't seem to know that Eugene had saw him go over the edge.
Everyone was acting normal, so Eugene bottled up the terror he couldn't quite shake, and they went home.
------
"Hey Varian, are you- oh my god get down from here are you crazy?!"
"Hi Eugene!" Varian greeted brightly, ignoring the unmanly screech as he balanced himself precariously on a ladder, trying to reach the highest part of his new contraption. "You'll never guess what this do!"
"Varian-"
"I mean, I know I wouldn't have guessed, considering that this is beyond what currently exist, but I'm also the creator so nothing is impossible for me-"
"Kid-"
"Well some things are, impossible that is, but not this and once I tell you what this is I think you'll be pretty amazed that-"
"Varian!" Eugene's voice was loud enough to interrupt the alchemist's excited ramblings, something dark and scared hiding in his tone. Varian looked down at his friend, the other half of team awesome, and noticed that Eugene was white as a sheet. "I- Varian, please, can you get down from here?"
It was supposed to be a request but sounded so much like begging that Varian complied immediately, sliding down the ladders in barely three seconds. Eugene seemed ready to protest, but sighed instead, his shoulders sagging as he put his hand through his hair. Going by said hair, more precisely its disheveled state, something was seriously wrong with Eugene.
"Are you alright, Eugene?" Varian asked, biting his lips.
"Who, me?" Eugene laughed, the sound too high pitched to be genuine. "Pff, yeah I'm fiiine, always am! Anyway, uh, I have to- to- brush my hair, so see ya!"
And just like that, he was gone, without even asking what he came here for. Varian blinked at the half-opened door worriedly, rubbing his own arm as Ruddiger settled around his neck to comfort him. Since the events with Cassandra, Eugene had been downright weird - always insisting on safety measures, and stopping Varian from doing anything that could result in even a papercut as long as he was in the room. At first, Varian basked in the new found attention; then he was frustrated by Eugene's overwhelming protectiveness, because he wasn't a little kid; but now, he was only confused and concerned about his friend's state of mind.
That was the first time Varian tried to confront him outright, but it had resulted in exactly what he feared: avoidance. He would have worried that Eugene was angry with him, if the man wasn't trying to protect him from every little bruise and cut. His health in general seemed to be the centre of Eugene's concerns, these days, as the man also lectured him on good eating and sleeping habits.
Though, going by the dark circles under Eugene's eyes, that was irony at its finest.
Varian grimaced, looking up to his ladder but abandoning this project for a while, not in the mood anymore. He gathered his tools and tried to think back at what could have provoked this shift, why Eugene wouldn't trust him with his safety anymore, when it hit him.
Trust.
Since Varian had been kidnapped, Eugene lost his trust in him being able to take care of himself correctly. Upset at the thought, Varian frowned, before coming to a conclusion: he had to gain that trust back. He had to show Eugene that he shouldn't worry.
Easier said than done.
------
Eugene knew that he couldn't keep this up forever, couldn't avoid Varian forever, and he already felt guilty enough about it. However, he also knew that he needed to get a grip on himself - he could hear how overbearing he was being with the kid and, despite cringing internally at his own behaviour, he couldn't stop himself from interrupting each time there was the slightest sign of danger. His mind kept flashing back to that day, at the top of that damn tower - different but identical in the way that mattered, because he nearly lost another person dear to him in there.
Eugene looked at Varian now, and could only hear his desperate cry for help as he tumbled over the edge. Eugene looked at Varian, looked at the things that could harm him, and his heart started to beat so loudly he wondered if anyone could hear it except him, wondered if anyone could see the trembling of his own hands. So Eugene intervened, because the worst thing that could happen was being too late again when he could have done something - luck wouldn't always be on their side.
That also meant he was being an horrible and controlling friend. Which is why he avoided Varian, which in return made him an even worse friend - vicious circles were like that.
Seeing Varian up on that ladder a week ago made his whole body tense in panic so quickly that it was a wonder Eugene managed to flee - and, after that, it took a very long time for him to be able to breathe normally again. And Eugene knew, he was certain he couldn't impose his own problems on the kid because Varian didn't deserve that - he'd have to deal with his issues first, and everything could come back to normal, and they would be team awesome again.
For the time being, though, he was an horrible friend.
Eugene groaned and buried his face on his pillow. He had to shake off the fear that gripped his gut when he thought back on the few seconds when he thought he would find Varian's sprawled body when he looked down - had to shake off the terror of thinking that this kid, his friend, had died in the middle of a conflict he had no business with, and tha5 Eugene had been useless to save him. Easy, right?
A knock interrupted his swirling thoughts and he frowned. It wasn't late exactly, but Eugene was pretty sure he had nothing planned for this evening, and he was also pretty sure that Rapunzel had other duties to attend, so it couldn't be her. He got up and-
"Hello Eugene!" Varian chirped excitedly, pushing back his goggles in his hair. "Got ten minutes or so?"
"Varian?" Eugene yelped, before he plastered an anxious smile on his face. "I, uh, I'd like too but-"
"I checked with the Princess, your schedule is clear for the evening," the alchemist singsonged without losing a beat.
Varian took Eugene's sleeve and tugged him out of his room without leaving him the time to protest, leading him toward the guards training area. Eugene could only gap at the multiple installations that were clearly not here earlier, and who looked like something you could find in the challenge of the brave. Hardcore version.
"I present you," Varian announced with a dramatic flair Eugene could only admire, "the TRUST! Or Training Regimen to be Used Safely and Tactically, as you wish!"
"What?" Eugene asked dumbly, taking in the spiky ball hung mid-air on a pendulum, or the obviously unsafe axe-throwing area or-
"Well, I noticed you've been very protective of me recently, and I think I know why." Varian nodded at his own words, ignoring the contrived stare Eugene gave him. "This is my way to show you that, even if Cassandra did kidnap me, it doesn't mean that I can't take care of myself!"
"Varian, that's not-"
"I don't blame you, don't worry!" Varian smiled weakly, self-conscious. "I mean, I guess I can understand that you would think I constantly need help, my life is rhythmed by disasters, but you don't need to worry constantly about me and I'll prove it to you right now!"
Varian made his way to the TRUST and pushed a lever Eugene hadn't seen, making all the different obstacles move in a very creative fashion, certainly, but also terribly dangerous. Eugene picked up his jaw from the ground before grabbing the kid's arm and stopping him as he made his way to the spiky pendulum, swaying from right to left quickly.
"Varian you don't need to do that," Eugene pleaded, guilt churning in his stomach.
"Of course I do!" Varian answered angrily, tearing his arm from the hold and backing off toward the contraption without looking. "You don't trust me anymore Eugene and this, this is my way to regain your trust. I- We can't be team awesome if you don't think I'm good enough to protect myself!"
"It's not that," Eugene insisted, "not at all Varian! It's not that I don't trust you, it's that I… I…" he stuttered, feeling his throat dry up as the dreaded images popped back in his head.
Varian took another step back, hurt, and Eugene knew he was fucking this all up but the words wouldn't come to him. Then, he saw the pendulum come their way and realised that Varian had backed off way too much - he didn't even scream his name, instead throwing himself on the kid and making both of them tumble on the ground, to safety. Well, more or less, going by the stinging pain in Eugene's arm - a glance told him that a spike had come too close for comfort.
"Oh god I'm sorry!" Varian exclaimed fearfully, grabbing at Eugene's arm before searching frantically in the bag he carried. "Wait, there's got to be bandages here, I'm sure-"
"Hey, kid, it's okay," Eugene reassured gently, both of them still sitting down on the ground as the could hear the swishing noise the pendulum made behind them. "It's only a graze."
"Yeah, a graze cause by one of my inventions! Again!" Varian's voice broke, and he lowered his eyes, his hair falling in front of his eyes. "Maybe you're right not to trust me," he mumbled, "everything I build ends up hurting the wrong people…"
"Varian," Eugene called firmly, his hand going under the kid's chin and raising his head, "I trust you. Actually, I trust you a lot more than most people, and your inventions may cause problems, but they also constantly help us. They're brilliant, kid."
Seeing the alchemist unconvinced and sad look made Eugene sigh, his free hand tightening against his own leg.
"You remember the mess with Cassandra at the tower, right?" Eugene asked, as if Varian could have forgot - even waiting until the kid nodded, nonplussed. "You… fell, off the tower."
"Yeah," Varian nodded quietly, the memory an unpleasant recurring guest in his nightmares, "Lance was there to catch me, though, I told you."
"You told me," Eugene assented quietly, "but I already knew, because I saw you fall."
Varian's eyes widened as he opened his mouth, before closing it with an audible snap. Eugene's eyes were looking at him, but they seemed glazed over, far away from the situation. His hands were trembling.
"I saw you go over the edge and… I thought-" Eugene trailed off, his voice too quiet to continue, before Varian sneaked his hand to take his. "It took me nearly twenty seconds to get to the edge and, for every of them, I was sure I would find you- find you dead. And I know I've been overbearing recently but- I can't get this fear out of my heart. I'm sorry, Varian," Eugene offered earnestly, "I know that I need to get over this but… I don't know what I'll do if something happened to you."
Varian hugged Eugene tightly right when he finished the story, his goggles digging painfully in Eugene's cheek.
"Thank you," Varian whispered, "for caring about me."
"Of course I do," Eugene whispered too, his arms settling around the kid's back. "You're one of my closest friend. Team awesome, am I right?"
"Team awesome!" Varian yelled in answer, nearly deafening Eugene for a moment as he jumped back to his feet. The kid paused, before proposing shyly: "Let's make a deal: I swear to do my most dangerous activities with someone to help supervise the experiment, if you swear you can accept that I am competent enough to do most things alone."
"Sounds good to me," Eugene grinned, happy that they made progress today - once they escaped the training equipment from hell.
He didn't think everything was fixed - didn't think he could stop being afraid for Varian so suddenly - but it was a first step in the right direction. As long as they were team awesome, they could surpass any obstacle.

Tangled Salt Marathon - Freebird
Tumblr media
This is a fairly decisive episode in the series. I personally like it, but I can’t act like I don’t understand when others say they have problems with it. Because it is very flawed.
Summary:  When their caravan breaks down, Rapunzel and Cassandra wander off, where they eventually meet a couple only known as the Mother and Father, who trick them into drinking a tea that turns them into birds. Though assured that they could use magical eggs to return to normal before they lose their intelligence within an hour, the group finds out that the Mother and Father have been tricking and imprisoning innocent people as birds.
Why Don’t You Have Time Cass?
Tumblr media
So the conflict of this episode is that Cass wants to get their quest over and done with while Raps wants to treat this journey as a fun vacation. While Rapunzel has been lollygagging up till this point, and with a good reason as we’ll find out this episode, there’s no given reason why Cass is in such a hurry herself.
There’s no overarching threat in season two, no motivating reason why Rapunzel needs to go on this quest, nor even a basic ‘ticking clock’ that the heroes have to beat. The lack of an external conflict undermines the internal conflicts that the writers want to push.
These Villains are Such Outliers in the Show That They Make the Episode Feel Misplaced
Tumblr media
I don’t mind the central conceit of Mother’s and Father’s presence here. They are a standard fairytale trope and this is meant to be a fairytale after all. However, up till now the more the fairy tale aspects of the series was kept to a minimal. There’s zero explanation why the wider world would be full of magic and mythical creatures if someone as well traveled as Eugene was oblivious to their presence before now.
My guess is that since Rapunzel herself is magic she naturally attracts other magical things to her that normal people don’t usually experience. But that’s just a guess, it’s never explained in the show and it needed to be since beforehand magic wasn’t considered common.
Mother and Father are also out of place here because they’re played fairly straight. Other mythical and magical beings are played with a twist or are tongue in cheek about their existence. Plus, as pure villains with simple goals, they contrast too starkly with the more complex villains the show was pushing both before and after this.
There Needed to be More of This in the Show
youtube
I couldn’t find a single image that broke down my thoughts about this scene so here, have the whole song. In my opinion it’s the best one out of season two and you could spend a lot of time breaking down an analysis of Cass and Raps characters and their relationship dynamic from it.
Or at least what their relationship dynamic should have been.
For you see, this is the only point in the series where Cass and Raps actually feel like friends. You get an understanding of why they would hang out together despite their differences. Yet this one episode isn’t enough to sell their ‘unbreakable bond’ by itself. We needed more scenes like this, more episodes that focused on them actually being friends and enjoying each other’s company, and more conflicts that that didn’t just boil down to petty jealousy in order to make their later breakup work.
Behold the One and Only Time Rapunzel Actually Admits Fault and Means It
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is why I like the episode. It’s the only one where the premise of the series works.
Cass and Raps have a genuine and understandable conflict, they feel like real friends here, and more importantly we get to the heart of Rapunzel’s issues and have her acknowledge what she’s doing wrong. It’s scenes like this why I had hope she would learn and grow and eventually come to realize how her treatment of Varian and others were wrong.
Even after this point, while she still is selfish, Rapunzel at least stops purposefully dillidalying. Oh there’s still plenty of filler to come, but from here on out it’s typically either something external holding them up or they’re on the go throughout the episode. So it does feel like she has learned something here.
Sadly this is damning with faint praise as that’s the only thing she seems to have learned.
There’s Still Holes in the Girls’ Motivations Though, Because of the Lack of Set Up
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What did you drop Cass? What on earth did you actually give up for Rapunzel? You achieved your goal of being a guard and now are the personal bodyguard to the crown princess. That’s a high honor and what you’ve been wanting.
Also it’s not like there’s anything back in Corona waiting for you except for your dad, which, given that you’re now 23, it’s kind of expected to move away from him at some point regardless. I mean, if you have a close relationship with your parents into adulthood, great, but you’re typically not reliant upon them for your whole life and there’s nothing wrong with going off on your own to purse your interests and goals.
Even then, Cass winds up throwing her relationship with her dad away the same as she throws her relationship with Rapunzel away, so it’s not like he was that important to her either. There’s also no other friends nor romantic partners in Cass’s life according to season three, so, once again, what was she giving up here in season two?
This goes back to what I was talking about throughout season one, how Cass’s goals and motivations are just shifted around to suit the plot rather than having any follow through or internal consistency.
We Still Don’t Know What ‘Destiny’ Means
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
‘Destiny’ isn’t a reason in of itself to do something. Rapunzel being scared because she doesn’t know where her future will lead is understandable, but that then begs the question of why is she even bothering with this quest. There still needs to be an external threat to motivate her into doing what she’s doing. Either keep the rocks active, have another villain racing her to the end, or a ‘ticking-clock’ prophecy that she either can’t avoid no matter what she does or that has a consequence if she doesn’t succeed.
So Hookfoot, Why are You Just Standing There Doing Nothing?
Tumblr media
There’s no reason why Rapunzel had to be the one breaking the eggs to free everybody. Especially since she doesn’t have hands right now and all the guys do. Even if Raps just wanted to make sure everyone else was freed before her, there’s still no reason why the other characters had to stand around doing nothing.
Also, hi Faith. What are you doing here?
So Are We Just Going to Ignore the Fact that Eugene Is Literally Right There?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like I’m sure the idea is that, in the confusion and with helping everyone else, Eugene just wasn’t made aware of what was happening with Rapunzel, until after the conflict had been resolved anyways, but that’s not made clear and it highlights one of the core fundamental problems with the show.
Characters’ previous relationships and dynamics are ignored into order to push the focus back on Rapunzel and Cassandra and that’s poor writing. If you can’t get the audience to care about the relationship you’re writing without undermining other relationships that the characters have, than you haven’t a compelling relationship. Just an annoying one that’s going to piss off most of the audience save for the most hard core of shippers.
And keep in mind, a romantic ship isn’t even what the creators were shooting for here. They fully intended for Rapunzel and Cassandra to be viewed as sisters. If you ship Caspunzel, that’s fine, but just know and recognize that there was a lot of gay baiting in the series. Some done on accident by the storyboard artists because Chris didn’t inform them of the sister plot twist, and some put in there by Chris himself to string along Caspunzel shippers into sticking around since they were the only part of the fan base left who weren’t pissed off after the events of seasons two.
Yeah, This is a Lie
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look, I don’t mind the Cass is a villain twist in theory, there were indeed things to work off of to justify it, but it’s wasn’t built up to well enough and there wasn’t enough motivation for it on Cass’s end. I’ll get more into it as we go along, but the lack of a clear underlying goal during the conflict here undermines that other conflict later in the series.
Conclusion
I still like this episode, but I get it when others say they don’t. It doesn’t work in the context of the wider story because it’s ironically the only episode that does present the Raps and Cass conflict right. It can be frustrating to come back to this episode and see all of the wasted potential. Just like how it’s frustrating to go back to Varian’s arc in season one and realize how much was wasted there as well. The show had a lot of interesting ideas and setups that were let down by later creative decisions.

Stay Alive
Decided to be mean over on Discord and write some future angst for @glacecakes Baby Varian AU on AO3- Alchemy Lullaby: https://archiveofourown.org/works/25816972 (THIS IS AN AMAZING READ, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!)
This is pretty much entirely based on Hamiltion’s- Blow us all away & Stay Alive (Reprise)
Warnings~ Major Character Death, gun shot wound, small mention of blood
Hope you enjoy!
-
Varian was a recently graduated college student and while he's back in his home town, Corona, he hears someone trash talking his dad, Eugene. Who it was? That's what Varian was trying to find out, nobody messes with his dad, nobody calls his dad a dirty thief! His thieving days were far in the past, Eugene was an honorable man who deserved the world in Varian's eyes.
He asks around the town about who had been talking about his dad, Varian didn't like that answer.
Andrew
Of course it was Andrew, that man did whatever he could to try and bring the Royal Family down.
Andrew. Where was he, Varian was going to kill him! But, where was Andrew? Varian asks around the town once again, of course.
Of course he was at a play, that man always tried to pretend he had some sort of class. The playhouse wasn't far, Varian makes his way down the street.
-
He swings the door to the building open, where was that bastard!
"Andrew, ANDREW!"
The man turns around and looks at Varian in annoyance. "Shush! I'm trying to watch the show!"
"You should've watched your mouth before you talked about my dad!" Varian is pissed, how could Andrew act so casual when he just went around talking about Varian's dad in such a horrible way!
I never said anything that wasn't true, your dad is a dirty thief and scoundrel, and by the looks of it, you probably are one too."
Varian didn't think it was possible to get any more irritated, but here he was.
"Just like that?!"
Andrew rolls his eyes, why wouldn't this damned kid just leave? "Yeah, I don't fool around, I'm not your little schoolboy friends."
Varian knew it was stupid to say, but he says it anyway. "Well, see you on the dueling ground! That is, unless you wanna step outside and go now!"
"I know where to find you, piss off, I'm watching the show now."
The whole conversation with Andrew in the playhouse left Varian pissed as he stormed home. He couldn't believe this, how could Andrew act so careless and casual
Varian arrives to his destination and slams the door behind him. Eugene was nearby.
"Dad! You should've hear the garbage Andrew was saying about you! You would've never let it slide and I was not about to!"
"Varian, slow down."
"I came to ask you for some advice... this is my very first duel and they don't exactly cover this subject back in college..."
"You did what?!" Eugene was shocked, sure Varian made du- no, no very thought-through decisions at time but a duel?
Eugene sighs, there wasn't much he could do about Varian challenging Andrew now. "Did your friends attempt to negotiate a peace?"
"That man never apologizes! We had no choice but to let the peace talk cease."
"Where's this happening."
Across the water in Equis..."
Both of the deadpan. "Everything is legal in Equis..."
"Alright, so this is what you're gonna do, Stand there like a man until Andrew is in front of you. When the time comes, fire your gun in the air. It'll put an end to the whole ordeal."
"But... What if he shoots and I'm a goner?"
"He will follow the rules of a duel if Andrew is truly a man of honor."
Varian had a lot of doubts, Andrew was no man of honor, but he trusted his dad.
"To take someone's life, that is something you can't shake Varian." Eugene's voice was more serious.
"Dad!"
"You don't want this man's blood on your conscience."
Varian thinks about that for a second
"Okay, I promise."
"Varian, take my gun, I trust you to be smart, make me proud son..."
-
The boat ride across the water was tense, this could be Varian's last moments. But, in that moment it didn't matter to him, he was a Fitzherbert with pride and when someone talks bad about his dad he would never let it slide!
They dock on land, it was time.
"Andrew, how was the rest of your show?" Varian was trying to be polite
"I'd rather skip the pleasantries and get this over with."
"Grab your pistol" Andrew wasted no time.
"Confer with your friends..." Varian was scared out of his mind
"The duel will commence after we count to ten." The two men say in union.
Varian's thoughts were screaming in his head
"Look him in the eye, aim no higher."
"Summon all the courage you require."
"Then slowly and clearly aim your gun towards the sky..."

BOOM
the sound of a gunshot rings through the air.

The red spread across his clothes.
There was so much-

How-
His gun... He aimed towards the sky just like his dad told him to...
Why?-
Varian collapses
-
It was getting late, where was Varian? Eugene was getting sick with worry, this ordeal should've been over quick, maybe he should-
There's yelling, sounds like someone running
"EUGENE!"
Kiera? Cataline? what were they doing here?
"It's Varian, you need to hurry! He's at the medi-"
The two didn't need to finish what they were saying before Eugene bolts towards the Medics place.
-
The door slammed open, “WHERE'S VARIAN, WHERE IS MY SON?!"
Eugene wasn't just worried anymore, all he could feel was pure panic. What happened to Varian?!
"Mister Fitzherbert, come in, they brought him in a half and hour ago. He lost a lot of blood on the way over." The medic was staying professional, keeping his voice calm despite the chaos.
“Is he alive?!"
Eugene couldn't lose Varian, he couldn't lose his son, not like this.
"Yes. But you have to understand, the bullet entered just above his hips and lodged into his right arm..."
Eugene was a mess already, tears were threatening to spill. "Can I see him... Please..."
"Mister Fitzherbert, I'm doing everything I can, but the wound was already infected when Varian arrived-”
Eugene was mostly tuning out the doctor at this point, none of that mattered, all that mattered to him was his son.
Infected the word rang in his head despite his best efforts to tune it out as well.
"Varian"
“D-dad..." Varian sounded so weak
"I did exactly as you said dad... I held my head up high...”
Eugene didn't bother holding back his tears, "I know, Varian, I know, you did everything just right."
"Before they got to ten... I was aiming for the sky...” Varian sounded delirious, barely conscious.
Eugene tried his best to reassure his son that he did nothing wrong, he did everything right. But Varian just repeats, "I was aiming for the sky..." in a quiet voice.
Eugene was almost sobbing at this point, "Please save your strength and stay alive..."
He was so desperate he couldn't leave, he could di-
Eugene hears the door slam open once again
Rapunzel
"No!" Her voice sounded so desperate..
"Rapunzel!" Eugene's voice sounded... broken
"Who did this Eugene, did you know?!"
Her attention is taken from Eugene the moment she hears her son, "Mom... I'm so sorry..."
"I forgot what you had taught me."
Rapunzel was already sobbing, her son... Who did this to her son...
"My son---" It was all she managed to get out through the tears that were streaming down her face
Varian's eyes were starting to look hazy, "We played piano...”
"I taught you piano."
"You would put your hands on mine..."
Rapunzel looked back on the memories with Varian, the happy moments they had spent together.
"You changed the melody every time."
Varian lets out a small laugh, "I would always change the lines." His voice sounded like it was getting weaker
"Sh, I know, I know..." Rapunzel needed Varian to save his strength. He had to survive this.
His voice sounded like it was getting quieter...
"I would always change the lines..." Varian's voice was a whisper
"I know, I know..."
Un deux trois quatre
 Cinq six sept huit neuf
 “Good”
 Un deux trois quatre
 Cinq six sept
Varian echos Rapunzel’s words,
Huit neuf
Sept huit neuf—
Sept huit…
Varian didn't say anything back this time, It was silent.
Varian was silent.
"Varian? VARIAN?!"
Eugene and Rapunzel yell out their sons name, hoping for any response, anything at all!
The doctor enters the room once again and check the young adult’s pulse, He shakes his head.
Varian was gone, the light of the couple's life gone.
Rapunzel drops to her knees and lets out a heart wrenching scream, Eugene cries out for his lost son.
The boy that came into their lives all those years ago was gone.

Matters of the heart S2 ep2
Matters of the heart Season 2 Episode 2: The dreamer’s twilight {OPENING CREDITS} {open to the village at night with Isaiah walking through the street} Isaiah: Dad?... Zapada?...where is everyone?... {the street is completely devoid of life} Isaiah: no one’s here?...hehe… {He runs over to the fruit stall} Isaiah: All the apples belong to me! Haha! {he picks one up and bites it; he chews it for a moment before promptly spitting it out} Isaiah: *gags* UGH! What the-!? {Suddenly all the fruit is rotten and the atmosphere darkens; a distant voice calls out} Voice: Isaiah~... Isaiah: huh? Zapada is that you? {A shadowy figure stands in the distance; Isaiah starts walking towards it; pink and green flames shoot up from the ground} Isaiah: AHHHHH!!! {The flames overtake the village; Isaiah tries putting them out but the flames only grow taller; he turns and sees his house burning down} Isaiah: NO! NOO! {Isaiah lurches up in bed screaming; Varian and Zapada burst into the room with Varian holding an alchemy vial at the ready} Zapada: Isaiah! Everything alright!? Isaiah: there...there was fire..a-and the house was...and the fruit stand! Zapada: oh copilul mea, it was only bad dream...Varian for the sake of all things put that vial away! {Varian grins sheepishly and puts it away} Varian: Buddy you okay now? Isaiah: y-yeah just...thanks… {Zapada walks over and kisses his cheek} Zapada: Noapte bună, Isaiah. Isaiah: goodnight… {they walk out of the room; once there gone Isaiah walks over to his desk and pulls out a journal; he flips to a page labeled bad dreams with tally marks; he marks down this dream as the 15th bad dream; he sighs and closes the book; cut to afternoon the next day} Nathaniel: I'm telling you man it's getting harder to put in the work lately... I mean with Dad gone I have to feed my sister and my mother and have enough money to pay taxes. the adult life is rough, you know? Isaiah:..... Nathaniel: Isaiah? Isaiah: *snore* Nathaniel:.... so that's how it's going to be, eh? { he picks Isaiah up and walks over to the river and promptly drops him in} Isaiah: AHHH!! what is the matter with you!?  it's freaking cold outside! you want me to get sick!? Nathaniel: what is up with you lately? all you ever want to do is sleep! Isaiah: it's none of your concern and I'm more concerned with the fact that my shirt is now soaking wet! {isaiah climbs out of the water and Nathaniel puts a hand on his shoulder} Nathaniel: come on man you know you can talk to me about anything. what's going on? Isaiah:... ever since I got these powers... I..   Nathaniel: yeah? you going to talk or you going to stutter? Isaiah:  I've been having these horrible nightmares... I don't know if it's a side effect of whatever this is…. or maybe I'm just going mad. Nathaniel: you know about a year ago I would have agreed with the sentiment of you just going mad… Isaiah: gee thanks I'm so grateful to have the support of a friend… Nathaniel: let me finish...But now that I actually consider you a friend I'm worried about you. if you don't get proper sleep you're going to end up crashing. Isaiah: Well then how do you suggest I beat the fear then? Nathaniel: well...My dad would always just tell me that it's not real. except that it happened in your mind and then let it go. it never really did help. Why don't you try taking your frustration out on something- WHOA! {He dodges a punch} Nathaniel: that wasn't an invite! Isaiah: oh... I thought you were telling me to... nevermind… {Nathaniel sets up a training dummy made of a flour sack and a pumpkin head and gives Isaiah a stick} Nathaniel: Okay... I've set something up so that you'll be able to get out your frustrations in a healthy manner.  this is what I would normally do when I was mad at you. just hit the dummy over and over again with the stick. Isaiah: and this will help my nightmares? Nathaniel: Well I read somewhere that nightmares are usually caused by situations or internal feelings so maybe this will help you… Isaiah: stop reading those books you sound like a nerd. Nathaniel: says the king of nerds… Isaiah: oh hush… Nathaniel: just picture of the stuff that pisses you off or makes you afraid and beat the crap out of it! {Isaiah walks over to the dummy; he pictures one of the wolves that killed Quirin; he screams and starts hitting the dummy} Nathaniel: whoa... a lot more pent-up energy than I thought. {Isaiah pictures the dummy as Cass and beats on it} Nathaniel: ... I think I could be here for a while… I'm sure the Town leader wouldn't mind if I picked a few apples for lunch. {suddenly he notices Isaiah shaking with rage} Nathaniel: Isaiah? you okay man? { Isaiah suddenly begins ferociously beating the dummy to the point of stomping on it} Nathaniel: damn... I'm actually afraid to picture who that one is… { Isaiah Stomps so hard on it that he breaks open the bag of flour and crushes the pumpkin head before falling back against the ground; Nathaniel nervously looks around then walks over to his friend} Nathaniel: ... Isaiah... you okay? Isaiah:...yeah… Nathaniel:.... who was... who was the last person you pictured? Isaiah….. Nathaniel: Isaiah? {pink magic crackles around him} Isaiah: it was me… Nathaniel: What? Isaiah:..IT WAS ME! {he screams out and the shockwave of his anger breaks branches off the apple trees causing branches and apples to fall to the ground; Isaiah backs away from Nathaniel and runs off; cut to Isaiah sitting by his favourite tree flipping through his journal} Lily: thought I’d find you here… Isaiah: huh? Oh hi, Lily… {lily sits next to him and leans on him} Lily: What are you doing? Isaiah: I'm trying to see if there's a pattern with my dreams that I've been having... so far all I've noticed is that involves the destruction of my Village or the kingdom. {lily takes the journal and starts reading it} Isaiah: Hey! Lily:... Isaiah...these are terrible...Wait. this one's about me. Isaiah: Don’t read that one! {he tries to lunge for it but lily moves out of the way} Lily: …. it says in your dream that I tried to stop you... but you slapped me out of the way... and you attacked me well under influence of your powers...  Isaiah…. That's horrible. I'm sorry you've been going through this. Isaiah: you're not mad at me for dreaming about that? you're not afraid of me? Lily:  why would I be afraid of you? Isaiah, you're my best friend. you would never hurt me on purpose. deep down you know that. Isaiah: I know... but these powers they overtake me whenever they want and I'm powerless to stop them. I try and fight it but.. I'm always afraid one day it'll be too much. Lily: you're afraid one day you won't be strong enough. Isaiah: exactly! what if one day i’m sick or tired and I don't have the strength to fight it off! What if-! {Lily puts a finger to his lips and smiles} Lily:  Isaiah... why do you worry so much of what could happen? Isaiah:  because the last time I was told not to worry about the future someone very close to me was killed. Lily: ...Isaiah… {Lily hugs him and he hugs her back tightly} Isaiah: I can’t lose anyone else...not again… Lily: Isaiah...I'm going to say something and you need to promise not to get angry… Isaiah: okay… Lily:.. did you ever consider maybe these nightmares aren't a result of the magic and I just you?  I mean think about it.. you were fine for a while there and now suddenly these nightmares have started up within the last fifteen nights... you ever think that maybe it was just holding everything back? Isaiah:... you mean that I've been doing this to myself? Lily:  kind of...You have a tendency to not talk about what's bothering you… Isaiah:  Fair point… Lily: come on... I have something that'll cheer you up. {She leads isaiah to his house and they open the door; streamers hang from the ceiling and a cake sits on the table with everyone surrounding it} Everyone: Surprise! Isaiah: What the-!? What is this!? Lance:  it's a party little man! Rapunzel: your friend told us how you were feeling... about yourself. Eugene: we wanted to let you know that we all value you highly. Varian: I'm sorry buddy if I knew you were feeling that way I would have done everything to cheer you up.
 Isaiah:  who told you all of this and how are you able to set this up so quickly!? {Everyone moves out of the way to show Nathaniel standing there} Isaiah: Nathaniel!? Nathaniel: don't get mushy on me now!  I did this because... you really scared me back there. the way you were beating up that dummy and then you said it was yourself that you were picturing... not going to lie that was disturbing. Akina:  Nathaniel tracked us all down within the day and told us what was happening! Zapada:  we came up with a plan.  we were going to throw you the greatest of parties that has ever been in your life. Rapunzel:  I was able to pick up a cake from Attila no problem! Akina: I cut out all the streamers by myself! Varian: And I made your favorite lamb stew! {Isaiah’s eyes water and he brushes away the tears} Isaiah: I can't thank you all enough...Each one of you is so important to me.. thank you. Rapunzel:  okay everyone bring it in! it's time for the queen to give hugs! Eugene: oh no now you got her hugging!  there's no coming back from this! {the Group hugs; cut to flashes of everyone having fun, dancing, eating, and playing games; after everyone leaves Isaiah closes the door and smiles and goes up to bed only to open his door and see Lily, Akina, and Nathaniel} Isaiah:  what's going on? aren't you guys going to go home with your folks? Nathaniel: I seriously think he's the only kid I've ever met that has never heard of a sleepover… Akina: it's a slumber party… Lily:  what does it matter what it's called?  we were worried about you sleeping at night so we talk to our parents and we're going to stay over and make sure that you're going to be okay… Isaiah: really? Akina: yeah! Nathaniel:  I was kind of roped into this… {Akina elbows him} Nathaniel: OW! that was my lung!  I need that to breathe~! {Isaiah laughs and hugs them all; cut to them all getting ready for bed} Nathaniel: no seriously what is that on your face… Lily: I am a princess and must keep up my Looks.. also it's called a mud mask… Nathaniel: girls are so weird… Akina: I could say the same about boys… Isaiah: Good night everyone… All:  good night! {Isaiah blows out the candle and goes to sleep; fade to Isaiah in the orchard} Isaiah: huh... let's see.. the fruit looks fresh at least... this is kind of weird... am I in one of those weird dreams where I know I'm dreaming? because if so... awesome. { he runs about the orchard laughing and giggling to his heart’s content} Quirin: Isaiah… Isaiah:....g-grandpa?... {Quirin nods; there is a moment of silence before Isaiah gets up and runs into his arms} Quirin: oh Isaiah...my brave grandson… Isaiah: Grandpa...I’m so sorry… Quirin: no it’s not your fault. Isaiah: but it is! I should’ve helped you… Quirin: Isaiah what good would it have done if we had both gotten killed? Isaiah: I don't know... I just miss you... I miss you every day. Quirin: I know... you've been doing a good job though... you've been helping your dad. rebuilding the town. Isaiah: I wish you'd come back. Quirin: it doesn't work that way… Isaiah:  I know… Quirin:  do you remember when I first ever told you? when you were five years old? Isaiah:...  not really. Quirin: you were such an angry little boy.  I remember I was working in the field all of a sudden this tiny little boy comes barreling out of the orchard into the Northfield. I remember he did a somersault. {Isaiah giggles} Quirin:  he started crying I thought because he scraped his knee... I remember I ran over to him and tried to help him. it turns out he wasn't crying because he scraped his knee... because he lost his mother and he was afraid of what was going to happen.  Do you know what I told him? Isaiah: what? Quirin: even though it's sad to lose someone you still always have the memories you made with that person. cherish those memories. never let them go.  if you hold onto their memory it's as if they never left. you know I'll never leave you, right? Isaiah: mmhmm… Quirin: If there's one last piece of wisdom I can impart on to you as your grandfather it would be to never doubt yourself.  you are Isaiah.  you're strong, confident,  and you are my grandson.  believe in yourself. don't let others tell you who you are, you know who you are… Isaiah: I'll do you proud, grandpa… Quirin: I know you will…. {they hug and cut to Isaiah sleeping with a smile in bed} {END CREDITS}

In what order would you rate all the songs in the Tangled franchise from best to worst (including movie and series) and why would you rate them that way?
That sort of question is so stressful like, I hope none of you expect me to have good taste or anything, I'm only listening to songs for the emotions they give me asgdhjdj also if I didn't make a mistake, there's exactly 40 songs between the movie and the series and it pleases me greatly
Anyway this is very long so read more it is (and btw since i cannot ever make up my mind this is far from a fixed list, ask me tomorrow and it'll be different asfhdjd the first ones and the last ones stay mostly unchanged but the middle is a big puddle of what i've been listening to the most lately)
1. I See The Light
It's very soft and very sweet and I could spend my life listening to it. I loved it before even watching Tangled for the first time and now I've got all this emotional attachment too so like yeah it deserves the first spot
2. Stronger Than Ever Before
Straight out banger okay, I love it so much and it always put me in such a good mood 😭💕
3. Buddy Song
Same reasons as above asghdjd
4. When Will My Life Begin (reprise)
Dude I just….. yeah this song always makes me emotional it's so freaking great i wish it was one hour long
5. Next Stop Anywhere (reprise)
Underrated new dream duet, again i only wish it was LONGER
6. The Girl Who Has Everything (reprise)
i listen to it and i cry what more can i say it's too sOFT
7. Everything I Ever Thought I Knew
Listen it's eugene's song at this point i cannot deny that i just love these songs based on what they make me feel and this one makes me feel a LOT
8. Nothing Left To Lose
Discovered the show through it and that part when they both sing at the same time hits just right 😌
9. Mother Knows Best (reprise)
It hurts but god is this an awesome villain song, both in the performance and the lyrics ;-;
10. Ready As I'll Ever Be
I love that song but I'll be honest I mostly love Varian's part and the chorus (?) part….. it's a banger but i tend to skip cass and rapunzel's part asfhdjdk (sorry it's still amazing tho 😭)
11. Life After Happily Ever After
Eugene's part 💕💖💖💕💖💖🥰💕🥰💕
12. Bigger Than That
Lance has the best voice all his songs are the coolest
13. Crossing The Line
The beginning between Rapunzel and Cassandra?? Unparalleled, I just. wish they kept going like this. Cass' solo part is still great but the beginning was SO good
14. With You By My Side
Very sweet and I love when people sing together asgdhjd
15. Waiting In The Wings
I do not have the same adoration some people do for it but it's clearly a banger, tbh the best Cass song even tho I've rated some higher here (but it's because there's other people in them)
16. I Will Make You Proud (reprise)
Can they start making these damn reprise longer I LOVE THE KEY CHANGE
17. I Will Make You Proud
I love itttt
18. Next Stop Anywhere
Honestly I feel it should be higher but I forgot so it's here instead asghdjdj i'm not remaking this but I love it (especially the Rapunzel and Eugene's parts because like. i'm me. ofc)
19. Wind In My Hair
It's stuck in my head like 70% of the time and i'm not even complaining about it
20. Through It All
I just…… love group numbers ghdhdjd it's catchy and i wish i could… idk, frame Eugene's "we all must heed the call" cause his voice is awesome here
21. Set Yourself Free
I really love Rapunzel that's all 🥺
22. Listen Up
Yes it's mostly useless but i love that song so much i can't explain it, IT GIVES ME ENERGY (also cap's moment is awesome gjfhfjgh)
23. Mother Knows Best
I'm all for upbeat and chilling villain songs, and Gothel's are amazing examples of that
24. If I Could Take This Moment Back
Okay I do like it and I do enjoy the angst but since it's like, nearly the only new dream duet in the series, I wish we got something better 😔 i like happy fun songs so much
25. When Will My Life Begin
It's such a nice song I know it by heart and I love it :')
26. The Girl Who Has Everything
I have Thoughts about this song and its meaning but it gave me the reprise and it's also very cute and catchy so I still listen to it quite often
27. Wind In My Hair (reprise)
It's soooo short but when she starts it up it's really amazing, it's just not that different from the og which is longer, so I tend to listen to the first one more
28. Life After Happily Ever After (reprise)
*listen to Rapunzel's part* *skip forward for 3000 years* *listen to the end* asfhdjdj Rapunzel's voice makes up for the annoyance tho i'm so proud of her
29. Something That I Want
Catchy, even though it doesn't really feel like tangled to me
30. Hurt Incantation
Literally one of the most fascinating twist of the series, it's not a song I listen to in itself but it's hella cool
31. Healing Incantation
Same, difficult to listen to it as a song but it's pretty and just… rapunzel singing it brokenly over Eugene's body haunts me ;-;
32. I Have A Dream
Group numbers my beloved <3 it ended a bit low on the list but idk i like it
33. The View From Up Here
It's cute idk what my brain has against it but i think it's the birds scaring me asgjdjjk no honestly i just think i have no emotional connection to it
34. I've Got This
Very plot focused song which is okay but it's just not really interesting to listen to it separate from the show, if that makes sense
35. More Of Me
A cool song but i just don't seek it out
36. I'd Give Anything
Pretty song but i cannot disconnect it from how stupid it is for Rapunzel's character arc so like, not the worse in melody but i avoid it
37. Friendship Song
I forget that it exists half the time… it really doesn't add much and i don't get why they made it 😅
38. Waiting In The Wings (reprise)
The only reprise that's actively worse than the original, both because of the twist and because the kid's voice just ain't it 😭
39. Living The Dream
I honestly don't care about it and Hookhand's an ass
40. Hookfoot's Ballad
Last on behalf of the ep making me believe that Eugene and Rapunzel were going to argue while singing and i got hookfoot instead. also it sucks

How exactly do you keep track of all your ideas when brainstorming and writing? Cause I can't imagine making it otherwise than with a giant corckboard and a ton of word documents, and in your writing all just goes together so smoothly. Do you have any methods/tools you're using?
um
okay so i have AN answer but it’s not a very good one if you’re looking for like, advice. because every time i have an idea i write it down but i use… ulysses, google docs, and the ios notes app and there is no rhyme or reason to which one i write any given idea IN and there’s no organization just three big messy stacks of notes and a half-finished world anvil and rambles to a couple friends on discord and rambles on this blog that i search through whenever i need to refresh my memory gbfjcjdbsh i have “a system” in that there are notes but the system is just
Tumblr media
and then for the stories themselves my planning stages go kinda
1. ruminating on plot points
2. jotting down notes like this:
0 - xaviers big book of lore
1 - vardaros / the baron & stalyan / kiera & catalina
3. think about the structure of the narrative and how best to arrange plot points along that structure
4. start writing synopses of each basic section like this (you can see how much vardaros changed from my early thoughts!):
Bounce from Alcorsīa, heading east to Eldora and Vardaros. Things are weird between Cass and Rapunzel and Cass feels weird about it. She sticks close to Varian, glad to see that the flying ship has pulled him out of his funk a little bit, and he thanks her for trying to find him at Ghisa. Eugene and Lance are excited about Vardaros; Eugene is hoping to show Rapunzel the sights and hopefully get her to talk about Janus Point a bit. Moira testily reminds them that this is not a vacation, which makes Rapunzel dig in her heels a bit. When they get to Vardaros Moira flatly is like if you’re not back by nightfall I’m leaving without you.
Cass opts to stick with Rapunzel, Eugene, Varian, and Lance (henceforth Team Corona) while Moira and crew members set out to take care of business/buy up supplies (Vardaros is right on the border of Marne, so they land in a Marnese lake near the border and walk into the city). Cassandra is keenly aware of the risks here: she’s a Coronan traitor walking around in a city of one of Corona’s closest allies. Eugene and Lance try to entertain Raps and Varian with a tale of youthful misadventures in Vardaros.
They are, of course, ambushed by the Baron’s goons. Eugene and Lance are captured, Cass and Rapunzel get pretty banged up, Varian (at Cass’s command) bolts back to the ship to get help.
Rapunzel and Cass reconvene at the Zampermin. Moira is pretty unsympathetic and kind of like rules are rules, we’re leaving at sundown, but Rapunzel loses. her. shit. Screams that they are going after Eugene and Lance and Moira is going to help because we don’t leave the people we love behind!! Moira sneers but Cass steps in and is like, Moira, they got kidnapped, it’s not like they’re off being irresponsible, come on. So Moira is like fine. Twenty-four hours.
Rapunzel is like we should go to the police and Moira just laughs. Asks for a description of the muggers, says they sound like the Baron’s boys and the watch isn’t gonna do a damn thing. He’s a crooked noble and Rodolfo loves him. Nobody messes with the Baron; even Moira is wary of him. Cass remembers Lance mentioning him before and is like oh shit. They agree to sniff around town in the morning; Moira theorizes that the Baron is gonna use his authority to have Eugene and Lance executed.
5. junk draft! this is just a speed write a la nanowrimo of a kind of hybrid very rough first draft / very detailed final outline. a lot of narrative troubleshooting happens here (this was the stage where i went ‘oh cass should go with moira instead’ for myriad reasons and also decided to toss abraham into the mix)
6. and then the revision/full writing stage is when i go through and separate everything into chapters and write it out as like. a real story. sometimes troubleshooting continues to happen (eg the lance pov scene in uh. 6 was originally planned to be eugene pov but when i went to write it i was like ‘…this section is a lot more about lance so let’s write it through his perspective actually’)
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
it’s all a bit chaotic and kind of about…slowly feeling out what ‘works’ for the story.
i will say that imo thinking about ✨narrative structure✨ is extremely important - HOW am i telling this story. i have these blocks of characters, plot points, settings. and i have certain plot and character arcs i want to build. what is the best way to put the blocks together to achieve the shape i want in the sturdiest, most coherent way? what is the core purpose of this scene and what other functionality can be layered into it, what other jobs can it do? how are these events being framed, through whose eyes, and why? etc. narrative structure will make or break a story so it’s good to keep it in mind as u plan and write 👍
