In the lead up to the 2024 elections, the Biden administration has taken aim at several Russian information operations. Earlier in September, the Department of Justice unsealed an indictment against two employees of RT, a Russian state-backed news network formerly known as Russia Today. At the heart of the indictment was Tenet Media, a company promoting content from right-wing influencers. RT, prosecutors say, largely funded Tenet, and its employees “edited, posted, and directed” content. (The individual influencers deny they knew about the company’s ties to Russia.)
Last week, Meta announced that it would ban RT and other media outlets backed by the Russian state from its platforms. Meanwhile, YouTube said it removed more than 230 channels with connections to Russian-backed media. Those decisions followed the US State Department imposing sanctions on Russian state media, saying that in addition to spreading disinformation about the war in Ukraine, RT was supporting a crowdfunding effort to support the Russian military’s invasion and had developed operations directly tied to Russia’s intelligence agencies.
“These Kremlin-backed media outlets are not only playing this covert influence role to undermine democracy in the United States, but also to meddle in the sovereign affairs of countries around the world,” said Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the time. “As part of RT’s expanded capabilities, the Russian Government embedded within RT a unit with cyber operational capabilities and ties to Russian intelligence. RT’s leadership had direct, witting knowledge of this enterprise.”
“Meta's ban of RT and other Russian state media stings a lot because that has been a core channel for the spread of Russian propaganda,” says Samuel Woolley, associate professor and founder of the Propaganda Research Lab at the University of Pittsburgh.
In the US, RT pulled in former war reporter Chris Hedges and late night host Larry King before it lost most of its broadcast access following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. But while the sanctions and deplatforming are certainly a blow to propaganda efforts directed at the US—Russian state media has seen some real success on social media—experts who spoke to WIRED say that it by no means will cap the outlets’ reach. RT is well-regarded in other parts of the world, particularly in Africa and Latin America, and Spanish language speakers make up the outlet’s largest market outside Russia. It has also invested heavily in old school television infrastructure, with offices in Havana, Buenos Aires, Cairo, Delhi, Algiers, and many other locations that will likely continue to operate unhindered, and offers services in French, German, and Arabic, in addition to English.
“English language speakers haven't been the primary target of RT or Russian media's propaganda efforts,” says Woolley. “And they’ve been building capacity for nearly two decades across Latin America, portions of Africa, and elsewhere in the world. And that has meant in those places that RT and Sputnik have almost become like a fixture of everyday life.”
In Latin America alone, RT’s channels run 24/7, and reported 18 million viewers in 2018. African Stream, which was also named by the State Department as part of Russian state media’s influence architecture and later removed by YouTube and Meta, garnered 460,000 followers on YouTube in the two years it was up and running. And Woolley notes that in these markets, there is likely less competition for viewership than there is in the saturated US media landscape.
“[Russian media] made headway in limited media ecosystems, where its attempts to control public opinion are arguably much more effective,” he says. Russian media particularly hones in on anti-colonial, anti-Western narratives that can feel particularly salient in markets that have been deeply impacted by Western imperialism. The US also has state-funded media that operates in foreign countries, like Voice of America, though according to the organization’s website, the 1994 U.S. International Broadcasting Act “prohibits interference by any US government official in the objective, independent reporting of news.”
Rubi Bledsoe, a research associate at Center for Strategic and International Studies, says that even with Russian state media removed from some social platforms, its messages are still likely to spread in more covert ways, through influencers and smaller publications with which it has cultivated relationships.
“Not only was Russian media good at hiding that they were a Russian government entity, on the side they would seed some of their stories to local newspapers and local media throughout the region,” she says, noting that the large South American broadcasting corporation TeleSur would sometimes partner with RT. (Other times, Russia will back local outlets like Cameroon’s Afrique Média). “All of these secondary and tertiary news outlets are a lot smaller, but can talk to parts of the local population,” she says.
Russian media has also helped cultivate local influencers who often align with its messaging. Bledsoe points to Inna Afinogenova, a Russian Spanish-language broadcaster who previously worked for RT but now has her own independent YouTube channel where she has more than 480,000 followers. (Afinogenova left RT after saying she disagreed with the war in Ukraine).
And Bledsoe says that the ban from the US might actually be a boon for Russian media in the parts of the world where it’s actively trying to cultivate its image as a trusted media brand. “The narratives that were shared through RT and other Russian media and in Iranian media as well, it's a kind of anti-imperialist dig at the West, and the US,” she says. “Saying the US is the driving force behind this international system and they’re plotting, and they’re out to get you, to impose on other countries’ sovereignty.”
Though Meta was a key avenue for the spread of Russian state media content, it still has a home on other platforms. RT does not appear to have a verified TikTok account, but accounts that exclusively post RT content, like @russian_news_ and @russiatodayfrance have tens of thousands of followers on the app. African Stream’s TikTok is still live with nearly 1 million followers. TikTok spokesperson Jamie Favazza referred WIRED to the company’s policies on election-related mis- and disinformation.
A post on X on from RT’s account on September 18, the day after the ban linked to its accounts on platforms like right-wing video sharing platform Rumble, X, and Russian YouTube alternative VK. (RT has 3.2 million followers on X and 125,000 on Rumble). “Meta can ban us all it wants,” the post read. “But you can always find us here.” X did not respond to a request for comment.

More than two miles long and 1,142 feet tall, Uluru, the red sandstone rock formation in Australia’s Northern Territory, wows travelers during the day.
But now, a new night spectacle Wintjiri Wiru illuminates the darkness adjacent to the monolith in a way that reveals Indigenous culture while dazzling with high-tech sound and lights.
“Humans are drawn to light—just think of how compelling sunsets are,” says Melbourne light artist Bruce Ramus, who designed the work in collaboration with the local Anangu people and Voyages Indigenous Tourism.
Wintjiri Wiru is just the latest offering—and newest technology — in the tradition of son et lumière (sound and light) shows, grand public spectacles projected on to (or close to) historic buildings and natural wonders.
These mash-ups of pageantry, culture, and art are experiencing a boom fueled by digital advances and tourist sites looking to attract visitors after dark.
Here’s where to see the latest shows, plus why visitors love these “virtual campfires.”
How did sound and light shows start?
Paul Robert-Houdin created the first sound and light show in 1952 at France’s Château de Chambord.
Music and narration played while slide projectors splashed colored lights on the 16th-century palace.
“We had the feeling that a new way of discovering and understanding monumental heritage was perhaps being born,” one observer wrote in Le Figaro newspaper.
The concept was a hit.
“Standing in the dark and being immersed in sounds and images creates a sense of enchantment,” says Jane Lovell, a professor of tourism at Canterbury Christ Church University in England.
In the following decades, other storied sites harnessed that magic, such as the Red Fort in Delhi, India, and Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
“There were captive audiences for these attractions, so the efforts were minimal—just light up these beautiful things that already existed,” says California light show producer Ryan Miziker.
Early technology was expensive and bulky: sofa-sized slide carousels, finicky stereo speakers that malfunctioned in bad weather.
The storytelling, if mostly historically accurate, could be clunky and lecturing.
At Egypt’s Pyramids at Giza, the still-running circa-1961 show features the Sphinx “narrating” a lofty spiel about ancient life as murky colored lights wash over the monuments.

How tech took over light shows
“Son et lumieres started out as pretty rudimentary things—a castle would be lit up and a soundtrack would say, ‘this tower was built in 1592,’” says Ross Ashton of London’s Projection Studio, which designs extravaganzas for attractions from Welsh castles to Indian fortresses.
But by the 1990s, innovations in video, lasers, and audio meant creators could screen riveting, mind-bending shows.
“Digital video changed everything,” says Miziker.
“We had software to do 3-D mapping, which takes a round object like a globe and flattens it, or wraps any structure in overlapping, blending geometry.”
Sound evolved, too.
“Bells, spoken voices from different directions, or a fireball rolling, you can layer sound up, so it feels like a tapestry,” says Projection Studio’s sound artist Karen Monid.
Today’s sound and light shows are like mini action movies screened on historic buildings or natural wonders.
San Antonio’s The Saga wraps the 18th-century San Fernando Cathedral in sound effects (mariachi ballads, cannon blasts) and painterly images (folk dancers, renderings of the Alamo) to tell the story of the Texas city.
In Jerusalem, Israel, the ancient Tower of David has two night shows, one on city history and the other about the biblical shepherd-turned-ruler that gave the site its name.
Wintjiri Wiru harnesses LED lights, lasers, sound, and 1,100 drones to recount a legend from the Anangu, who consider Uluru sacred.
The show depicts mala (wallaby-rabbit) beings battling a gigantic devil dog spirit.
“Combine light with sound—in this case Anangu songs and other effects—and it’s like the desert is speaking,” says Ramus.
Other projects are more abstract, such as the new Aura Invalides show at Les Invalides in Paris, which fills the grand interiors of the historic military monument with surreal rays of colored light and outlines architectural elements in laser graffiti.
“People move around within the building, making it more like a 360-degree immersion than something didactical,” says Manon McHugh, a spokesperson for Moment Factory, the studio that created the show.
Why travelers love spectacles
Experts think people are drawn to these shows for their sense of wonder and spectacle.
“Sound and light shows are like fireworks—it’s impossible to look away,” says Miziker.
"Since audiences are sitting in the dark, there’s cognitive dissonance, with the atmosphere almost becoming its own entity,” says Lovell.

Plus, in this age of Instagram, sound and light spectacles make ideal selfie backdrops or video ops.
“When Moment Factory started doing shows, we didn’t want people to have their phones out,” says McHugh.
Now, other digital production studios build in elements like photo booths to encourage participants to share their experiences.
How sound and light shows help tourist sites
Sound and light shows can be expensive and time-consuming to design.
(Wintjiri Wiru was developed over several years and cost $10 million.)
But many tourist attractions and cities are willing to shell out.
“They produce new income streams,” says Ashton. “People normally go home at night, but if you sell them a ticket to an illumination, they’ll come back.”
Many sound and light experiences in public, urban spaces — outside cathedrals, on city halls, across skyscrapers — are free, but paid for by cities to give visitors an excuse to stay an extra night.
“We used to think of tourism as a daytime activity, but there has been this tourist-ification of the night,” says Andrew Smith, a professor of urban experiences at England’s University of Westminster.
“Now cities want to attract people and keep them in town. It’s a commodification of the night, a way to extend economic and cultural activity.”
Studies indicate that these shows might even make city downtowns feel safer. “It starts to dematerialize the buildings,” says Ramus.
“You just see the lights, and our cities become transparent. They feel gentler.”

Important Tips To Know While Choosing A Right Party Venue
Choosing the right party venue can be a tiresome task. It invites a number of challenges even while choosing the best legacy function hall in Delhi to organize a small event. You may need to change your decision just while you're close to finalizing your selection and this always affects a sorted plan. Various things such as the event date, catering options, attendees' experience, etc., play an important part to choose the right location. A slight difference can bring a large change.
So, in this blog, you'll get to know some tips to consider while selecting a suitable resort for party in Delhi.
1. Location
An easy-to-reach location is always a must while organizing an event. It also depends on who are the attendees. For example, an employee-only event should be near the office and must be easily accessible for easy transportation. Conferences, corporate meetings, conventions, and trade shows must be near the airport or around comfortable locations. This will be more convenient for the industry professionals or all of your company members, such as regional sales representatives.
2. Capacity
Taking a rough estimate of the number of guests would be better to cut down on the extra expenses. You should know how many people are going to attend your event before choosing an event venue. Picking a too-small venue will create a congested atmosphere and a too-large event venue will make your attendees feel dwarfed. Some of the best banquet halls in Delhi NCR will help you know your room requirement.
3. Ambiance
You can choose from a number of venues during event planning. Even venues that appear to be the same in terms of location, size, accessibility, cost, etc., can differ greatly in terms of their ambiance. Choosing the environment, you want to create for your guests is one of the easiest ways to eliminate options. Should your gathering be formal, casual, or private?
4. Budget
Consider the cost of a legacy function hall in Delhi, any additional costs they may ask for the type of event you are planning, and the expense of establishing the ambiance you need. Selecting the venue's preferred vendors, booking rentals, arranging transportation, and purchasing additional insurance can all be more expensive than using a more expensive location when those extras are already included in the base price.
5. Amenities
It's better to ask about the amenities your company desires before booking a resort for party in Delhi. Make a priority list of the various amenities that are most important to your event when choosing a venue.
Parking. Always go for the locations with ample parking, or keep a suggestions list with you for alternatives. Including shuttle pickup and drop-off points, ride-sharing discounts and reserved spaces in a nearby public parking lot will compensate for a location without parking.
Seasonality. While certain areas are more comfortable during chilly weather, others are designed for hot summer days. Choose a venue that is appropriate for the season you will be holding your event. Ask about how each venue accommodates events in the rain, heat, snow, and cold.
Layout. The location and accessibility of entrances, restrooms, bar, stage, tables, and serving points always affect an event flow. It is also a nice idea to have quiet areas tucked away from the main event.
Decor. Many banquet halls in Delhi NCR do not include enough decor or lighting. This gives your company a clean slate, but it may also consume time and financial resources. On the other end of the spectrum are locations that are always decorated. There are, of course, many locations in between these two extremes.
Technology. Acoustics, audio/visual capabilities, and Wi-Fi accessibility are of varying importance, depending on the event's nature. These elements are more important at speaker series, award shows, and conferences than at corporate parties.
6. Sustainability
Several legacy function halls in Delhi believe in the "green earth" concept. The first stage in reducing the environmental impact of your employer's or client's business event is to choose a venue that has a strong focus on sustainability.
7. Preferred Vendors
Many spaces require the use of specific vendors, such as event planners and caterers. Make sure you consider these restrictions when choosing a venue.

“Gut, Microbiome & Millets: The Inflammation Fix”, Celiac Society of India organised A Revolutionary Seminar for Chronic Disease Prevention
● Illness to Wellness initiative celebrated a decade of promoting preventive healthcare.
● The seminar highlighted gut health's impact on chronic diseases and the benefits of millets.
● Experts shared insights on microbiome balance and practical dietary solutions with a diverse audience.
New Delhi, 8th July 2024 – The Celiac Society of India and the Indian Coalition for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders, in partnership with Illness to Wellness, today hosted a transformative seminar titled “Gut, Microbiome & Millets: The Inflammation Fix.” The seminar aimed to illuminate the critical role of gut health in combating prevalent nutritional deficiencies and chronic diseases, emphasizing practical dietary changes for improved public health outcomes.
Distinguished guests, including Dr. Vinod Paul, Member of NITI AAYOG; Ms. Meenakshi Lekhi, Former Union Minister; and Dr. Chandrakant S. Pandav, Padma Shri awardee and Former Professor & Head of Community Medicine at AIIMS, advocated for rightful eating, Gut Health and the need for the use of Magic Millet in our daily lives.
The seminar highlighted the importance of gut health in addressing the epidemic of nutritional deficiencies and chronic degenerative diseases such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancers, autoimmune diseases, and mental health issues. Often referred to as the second brain, the gut houses two-thirds of the immune system, underscoring its crucial role in overall health. Recent studies emphasize the profound impact of gut health on overall well-being, highlighting its role in managing obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and mental health.
The eminent speakers who enlightened the audience with their insights included Dr. Arjun Dang, MBBS, MD, CEO & Partner at Dr. Dang’s Lab; Dr. Meena Mishra, MBBS, MD, Chairperson of the Brain Behavior Research Foundation of India; Dr. Kapil Yadav, MBBS, MD, Professor at the Centre for Community Medicine, AIIMS; Ms. Ishi Khosla, Clinical Nutritionist, Columnist, Author, Entrepreneur & Researcher and Dr. Asha Chandra, Founder of Asha Chandra Welfare Consultancy among others.
Speakers highlighted pointers on the disruption of microbiome balance caused by commonly eaten grains and highlighted the benefits of ancient, anti-inflammatory, gut-friendly grains like millets. The engaging discussions provided attendees with practical dietary changes to incorporate these nutritious grains into their daily lives, dispelling myths and misconceptions along the way.
While opening the session, the Iodine Man of India, Dr. Chandrakant Pandav, Padma Shri awardee and renowned expert in community medicine with significant contributions to iodine deficiency disorders and public health said, "Wellness encompasses nine interconnected components: Physical, Emotional, Social, Creative, Spiritual, Financial, Environmental, and Occupational. Each of these elements is vital to achieving overall well-being. Development should be measured beyond economic metrics, taking inspiration from Bhutan's Gross National Happiness, which emphasizes happiness and well-being as key indicators of progress. According to the June 2024 UN report, only 17% of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are on track to be achieved by 2030. Immediate and accelerated action is required to meet these global objectives."
Pressing on the need for behavioural change, Dr. Vinod Kumar Paul, Member of NITI Aayog said, "We must tackle the nutrition crisis through behavioural change, shifting to nutritious foods like millets instead of processed ones. Our ancestors knew diet influences behaviour, and our Prime Minister has promoted this by celebrating the International Year of Millets and the G20 Presidency. Millets benefit both health and the environment.
Celiac disease is a hidden condition that needs more awareness. The CNNS data shows alarming trends: 11% of children aged 10-19 are pre-diabetic, and obesity rates are rising by 4-5%. I urge teachers, parents, and caregivers to focus on children's diets, obesity, and overall lifestyle. Regular health checkups, including BMI assessments, are crucial. Nutritionists and industry professionals must prioritize adolescent health.”
Calling for participation from Doctors, Scientists and Nutritionists, Dr Paul insisted, “We need evidence that changes can reduce obesity and anemia on a large scale. Preconception care for women and proper complementary feeding between six to eight months of a child's life are critical, yet only 46% of children receive this care. Additionally, only 12% of children aged six to eighteen months receive a minimum acceptable diet, leaving 88% lacking essential nutrition. Special attention is needed for early and low-birth-weight babies, who make up 30% of births and require intensive feeding. This is a critical public health nutrition issue that demands immediate action.”
Describing how Millets has changed her life, Meenakshi Lekhi, Former Union Minister said, “We need a millet revolution, much like the green revolution. Ancient texts from the Neolithic period and the Harappa and Indus Valley civilizations reference millets, highlighting their historical significance. Varieties like Black Millet, Barnyard Millet, Foxtail Millet, and Sorghum Millet were once staples in our diet before colonial influences changed our eating habits.
India now produces 20% of the world's millet and 80% of Asia's. It's time to reclaim millet as our best food, particularly for undernourished children, and promote it for gut health to address many health issues. Remember, 'food itself is a medicine.' Indian doctors, trained in both traditional and Western medicine, understand this well.
Advocating that women shouldn’t ignore the benefits of breastfeeding, Mrs. Lekhi highlighted that, Data shows over 70% of breastfeeding women do not get breast cancer, emphasizing the importance of women's health and breastfeeding."
Appreciating the efforts by Celiac Society of India, Mr Anil Rajput, Chairperson, National CSR Council, ASSOCHAM said, “It's incredibly encouraging to see the Celiac Society organizing a program to raise awareness about gut health. We all understand the crucial role gut health plays in overall well-being, as many health issues originate from the gut. A healthy gut is the foundation of good health. I am deeply grateful to Ishi Khosla and the Celiac Society for arranging this event and wish it a great success.
Dr. Arjun Dang, CEO of Dr. Dangs Lab, emphasized the importance of diet and highlighted the triple burden of malnutrition: undernutrition, overnutrition, and micronutrient deficiencies. Dr. Dang proposed strategies like enhancing maternal nutrition, deworming campaigns, diversifying diets with millets and pulses, and promoting health education.
Dr. Kapil Yadav of AIIMS New Delhi emphasized that anemia is not just a medical issue but one rooted in nutrition. He highlighted the gut's role as a critical gatekeeper, with the microbiome and millets being key in addressing anemia. Rising anemia cases are linked to lifestyle changes, food quality, and climate change. Dr. Yadav noted that reduced kitchen time and increased processed food consumption have led to less diverse, less nutritious diets, moving away from the "Rainbow plate" of our ancestors.
"Micronutrients play a crucial role in brain development across all stages of life—from childhood through to ageing. Special attention is essential during lactation and early pregnancy. Early childhood nutrition is pivotal for cognitive development; traditions like Ragi ceremonies in Karnataka underscore its importance. Scientifically, millet-based weaning diets enhance attention spans and cognitive performance in children." said Dr. Meena Mishra, Consultant Radiation Oncologist.
Renowned Clinical Nutritionist & Author, Ishi Khosla said, "Grain Changer is a game changer as modern science reconnects us with our gut. Millets boost haemoglobin in pregnant women carrying twins. The 'four G's'—Gut, Girth, Gluten, and Glucose—interconnect to transform our eating habits and lifestyle permanently."
Dr. Ashutosh Shukla, Senior Director of Internal Medicine, Max Hospital Gurugram said, "Lifestyle diseases stem from gut health; imbalanced bacteria can lead to inflammation, metabolic disorders, and mental health issues. Bad gut bacteria contribute to the rise in these diseases, disrupting the immune system and increasing risks like diabetes."
"Gut health impacts lifestyle diseases profoundly. Bacteria, present for over a million years, play a vital role in breaking down fiber and producing essential vitamins. Disruptions in this cycle can lead to metabolic and mental health disorders. Skin issues, from allergies to pigmentation, often originate from gut health. Treating the gut enhances treatment efficacy, linking nutrition to overall harmony in life." concluded Dr. Mankul Goyal- Dermatology from AIIMS Delhi.
The seminar concluded with a call to action for adopting millets and prioritizing gut health as vital steps towards achieving better health outcomes and preventing chronic diseases.
