Aikoto in the Atlus FES!

Atlus has announced more details about the upcoming Atlus FES! The Merch Lineup includes two Aikoto Acrylic Panels, one based on the Soejima illustration (4,400 yen) and another on the Episode Aigis Key Visual (3,300 yen). Both of these will be at sale on the Atlus D Shop from Monday, June 10th.

An Aikoto Clearfile and Postcard featuring the Episode Aigis Key Visual will also be given as prizes for those who participate on the P3R Dice Battle. It's not known at this point whether these goods will also be sold on the Atlus D Shop.

Lastly, Atlus has also prepared Aigis and Metis cosplayers for the event!

Fun little detail: Notice how Atlus put together Aikoto merch in the first photo! While the Makoto, Yukari and Junpei keychains are sold as a set, the Makoto/Aigis keychains and badges featured in the photo are sold separately, yet Atlus put them together ❤️

Across all of the Shin Megami Tensei properties, how many have a female protagonist only as the star of a whole game, not like a spin-off novel or a DLC or anything, and not as an alternate option that defaults to male for spin-off materials.

Cursory googling says it's Ringo, Maya, and Mai Kaname from Devil Children Red Book but I might have missed some.

Weird how that shakes out though, like girls can be the protagonist of a whole game if we have boys something to do or they can be protagonists of their own little side adventures but somehow the concept of playing a whole game as only a girl as her own character the way Atlus likes to do with even their silent protags is so weird they've done it three times across literal decades and dozens of games

The Great Seal’s Design

Considering how close Episode Aigis/The Answer is to being released, I think it’s time to point out one of the most interesting design choices in the game. Because everyone must have asked themselves why does the Great Seal look like this:

A golden door with 6 eyes and 4 spirals…

Well, the choice for it to be a door has an obvious source: one of the titles the Death card receives in esoteric traditions (in particular Thelema) is the “Lord of the Gate of Death”. This title is also seen in the card rendition of P3 and P4.

The doors behind the skull? Yeah, they are the ones.

I don’t think I’ve to do an in-depth explanation of why doors—and threshold in general—are a perfect representation for death and transformation/evolution, going from the known and familiar world into the great unknown, from the inner into the outer and vice versa.

“Man is a gateway, through which from the outer world of gods, daemons, and souls ye pass into the inner world; out of the greater into the smaller world. Small and transitory is man. Already is he behind you, and once again ye find yourselves in endless space, in the smaller or innermost infinity. At immeasurable distance standeth one single Star in the zenith.” - Seven Sermons to the Dead.

And as a curiosity that has no particular relation with the Seal’s design: Makoto creates the Seal within Nyx’s body, yet The Answer showed him using it within the depths of the collective unconscious. Pretty interesting indeed, and I can only link it with the Star mentioned in the previous quote, and thus with…

“An Indian picture of Shiva-bindu, the unextended point. It shows the divine power before the creation: the opposites are still united. The god rests in the point. Hence the snake signifies extension, the mother of Becoming, the creation of the world of forms. In India this point is also called Hiranyagarbha, 'golden germ' or 'golden egg.'” - Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious

How I lied about its importance xD

Again, I’m not going to repeat the meaning and role of Nyx’s here; I already wrote a post about it. So to put it shortly, Nyx isn’t something that can't be defeated, but only accepted, integrated and transformed. That’s why the Great Seal is a door, because doors are meant to be opened, to communicate the outer with the inner. However, as life and humanity are unable to confront their darkness, the Gate is sealed for the time being.

Now, moving into the next element, there’s the 6 eyes! And I have a perfect quote once more.

“Eyes are round and in common speech are likened to ‘cart-wheels.’ They also seem to be a typical symbol for what I have called the ‘multiple luminosities of the unconscious.’ By this I mean the seeming possibility that complexes possess a kind of consciousness, a luminosity of their own, which, I conjecture, expresses itself in the symbol of the soul-spark, multiple eyes (polyophthalmia), and the starry heaven.” - Mysterium Coniunctionis.

That quote was in regard to an analysis of Ezekiel’s visions about (biblically-accurate, duh) angels, the cherubim and ophanim. Since those angels are the bearer of God’s throne, they become extensions of his essence and symbols of the Self as well, of the unified and whole nature of man. The animal and monstrous characteristics of the angels are due to said wholeness, which fully embraces the autonomous and (sometimes) beastly aspects of the unconscious.

At any rate, the same logic should apply to the Great Seal, with the multiple eyes it has being representations or outright multiples souls/complexes that are working harmoniously as one, constantly watching their surroundings. In that regard, the number of eyes also makes sense: 6 is the quantity of directions (above, below, front, back, right, and left) in a 3D-space like the universe. While the number doesn’t really fit with the hindu Lokapala, it does with their role as the guardians of the cardinal directions and eternal watches of the universe at large.

However, as far as I’m aware, there’s no particular relevance of the number 6 within a psychoanalytic context beyond two mentions. The first one is in the explanation of Seven Sermons, where the candelabra named “Ignis” and “Eros” has seven arms due to the spiritual principle of the number 3, or “3 + 3 + a special 1”, which in turn connects with the second mention:

“Luna is thus the sum and essence of the metals’ natures, which are all taken up in her shimmering whiteness. She is multi-natured, whereas Sol has an exceptional nature as the ‘seventh from the six spiritual metals.’ He is “in himself nothing other than pure fire.” - Mysterium Coniunctionis

This one makes more sense, considering Makoto’s visage is a white/gray stone hanging near the center of the Seal. It could also connect with the alchemical symbol of the hexagram, representing the union of opposites during the Great Work and, as per Tatsuya’s Scenario, the macrocosm of space—or the macrocosmic universe (“大宇宙”). And just to put the final nail on the coffin:

“This sun has seven rays. A commentator remarks that four of them point to the four quarters; one points upwards, another downwards, but the seventh and ''best" points inwards. It is at the same time the sun's disc, named Hiranyagarbha.” - Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious

The six eyes are the multiple “consciousnesses” that watch over the ever-expanding and ever-developing outer word. They observe and change, focusing only on the reality that surrounds them. While the seventh ray, the most important and exceptional “metal” of all, focuses inwards, into the equal and contrary of the macrocosm: the human soul. And that disposition isn’t only found in Makoto’s “soul”, but also in the other element on the Seal, the 4 spirals.

“We can hardly escape the feeling that the unconscious process moves spiral-wise round a centre, gradually getting closer, while the characteristics of the centre grow more and more distinct. Or perhaps we could put it the other way round and say that the centre—itself virtually unknowable—acts like a magnet on the disparate materials and processes of the unconscious and gradually captures them as in a crystal lattice." - Psychology and Alchemy

4 is the number par excellence of the process of individuation and the Self, the sacred quaternity that’s ever so prevalent in mythology and folklore. And it’s present along with the figure of the spirals that, as previously quoted, stands for the movement of the psyche around its core and whole nature, the Self. Thus, the spirals go on forever, endlessly and fruitlessly getting close to the underlying archetype of life and humanity.

The eyes and spirals, then, present complementary imagery. They both represent the simultaneous collectivity and individuality of the Self, which is “smaller than small and bigger than big”. Yet, the divinity present on them is only fulfilled when the effigy of humanity is included, the immobile and changeless center from which every movement emerges and around which they move.

However, life is bound by time and change by definition. It transforms itself to accommodate archetypal wholeness. So what happens when that wholeness is achieved and embodied?

“That would probably mean—translated into our language—that when the Self, after having grown within the earthly man, has completely reached its goal, i.e., the mandala of the unus mundus, then it has a deadly effect on the earthly body because it has reached a form of definite oneness with the all-pervading cosmic One-continuum, which seems to be hostile to separated existence.” - Psyche and Matter, by Marie-Louise Von Franz.

The Self, the union between the outer and the inner, is the final goal of life, its purpose. And once it’s achieved, life is ready to “depart”, but not completely. Again, when individuation is finished the individual becomes one with the collective and world at large, and just like them, it keeps going even after death, though not necessarily in a physical manner. Again, the only thing that dies is the physical body, because the realized essence becomes everlasting, like stone itself.

“Then spirit, soul, and body become ‘the One, in which the whole mystery lies hidden.’ This ‘One’ is also described as a stone statue which is born out of the fire. It unites spirit, soul, and body and contains all four elements.” - Psyche and Matter.

The real stones that everyone knows of aren’t eternal, obviously. I’m not speaking about that kind of thing, but of their symbolic nature as things that surpass the lifespans of all living beings, that resist the weathering of time and the elements. Thus, what element better than stone to represent the non-bodily eternity of the soul? Even Erebus, with a strength that Elizabeth said was enough “to tear down mountains to the heavens”, can’t even put a scratch on Makoto’s effigy.

Following with the stone motif, Christ’s association with stones can also be noted, the eternal cornerstone of the house of god, as well as the Philosopher’s Stone, which, despite having red as its main color as seen with Trismegistus, is said to be a manifestation of God like Christ is, and the microcosm itself—the perfected human spirit. But again, the main idea behind the statue is the fact that it’s Makoto’s crystallized life force, made to last as long as humanity finds life unbearable.

The Great Seal, the manifestation of Makoto’s soul and his final resolution, will forever remain in the abyss of the collective unconscious as a symbol of the potential that lies dormant within everyone—the timeless bond that joins everyone as one. And as long as it remains as such, the Gate will be eternally closed, immovable as a mountain.

He may look alone, but that's from the truth.

(Byleth) “We’ll be going into our respective groups that we came in with. House Reps, you will be the leader of your group.”

- Kazuma and his group nodded, and dived into the water.

- The first area they went into was a somewhat small cave.

(Aqua) “Oooh, this weird tube thing looks pretty!”

(Darkness) “Is it edible?”

- Kazuma put a scanner to it and read the name.

“Acid Mushroom”

(Kazuma) “…Nope.”

- Kazuma continued to swim off as Aqua stared at it.

(Aqua) “Hm…We could use it for something. Right?”

(Darkness) “I will go find the most hostile fish in this area and…hehehe, fight it!”

- With an insane look in her eye, she swam away.

(Kazuma) “Megumin? Find anything in there?”

- Megumin was inside the cave and found a small red-plant like creature.

(Megumin) “I think so?”

- The plant revealed an eye, which made Megumin jump.

(Megumin) “K-Kazuma?!”

- A creature with a giant eye made an unholy noise as it bolted towards Megumin.

HUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

- A massive explosion could be heard from across the entire shallows as it jolted Aqua and Kazuma into attention.

(Kazuma) “What the hell!? MEGUMIN!”

- Megumin swam out of the cave with her scuba gear clearly dented as a crazy smile took over her.

(Megumin) “THESE CREATURES! THEY KNOW THE ART OF EXPLOSIONS!”

(Kazuma) “You gotta be- KAMIKAZE FISH?! THAT’S GREAT!”

(Aqua) “Hm…”

- Aqua purified the mushroom and looked at it curiously.

(Kazuma) “DO NOT EAT THAT MUSHROOM! Where’s Darkness?!”

(Darkness) “How disappointing.

- Kazuma and the group saw Darkness getting bitten by some shark-like creature.

(Darkness) “These predators will not provide the stimulation I crave.”

- She punched it so hard it flew into the nearby coral tubes, splitting it apart as if it were paper.

(Kazuma) “OH FOR FUCKS SAKE, DON’T GO PICKING FIGHTS WITH THE PREDATORS-”

(Aqua) “K-Kazuma?!”

- The fish began to swarm Aqua, which eventually led to those same shark creatures headed her direction.

(Kazuma) “RETREAT! RETREAT!”

(Aqua) “Psh, it’s just a buncha fish! THEY’RE NO MATCH FOR THIS GODDESS-”

- The predators began to bite Aqua.

(Aqua) “OWOWOWOWOW-”

- Kazuma began swearing loudly and incoherently as he brought up his knife and tried to save Aqua as Megumin and Darkness took care of the exploding fish being drawn to Aqua.

30 minutes later…

(Sharon) “Welcome back, Master Satou.”

(Kazuma) “Ugh…”

- Kazuma flopped onto the lifeboat’s floor, dragging up Megumin, Aqua and Darkness.

- Sharon helped them up and calmly got a towel while Kazuma continued to groan.

(Sharon) “May I ask what you have found?”

- Kazuma reached into his pocket and put them near Sharon’s feet.

- A fish, several teeth from the shark-like fish, some acid mushrooms, and 1 piece of titanium.

(Sharon) “Would you like some tea?”

(Kazuma) “Please?”

New Class VII visit the back of the Aurora

- Altina drove the Seamoth forward while the rest of Class VII tagged along on their seagliders.

- Juna kept looking around left and right until Kurt spoke.

(Juna) “Juna, are you alright?”

(Kurt) “Ugh…No, not really. I don’t like this place is all. It’s so…alien.”

(Ash) “Well yeah, it’s another planet.”

(Juna) “Bah, you know what I mean! We were never trained for this, surviving underwater!”

(Musse) “Neither was the original House Isekai, but they still survived!”

(Altina) “Instructors Rean, Towa, Aigis, and Kazuma seem to have sufficient knowledge of the planet, despite how much time has passed.”

(Juna) “I wonder how the others are doing right now…”

(Kurt) “If I had to guess, like us. Especially the Garreg Mach students, I don’t think they ever anticipated on going on a journey like this.”

(Musse) “Hm…I don’t think the original three houses ever went on this planet, did they?”

(Ash) “Don’t think Rean mentioned it…Er, Altina where are we going?”

- Class VII only now realized where they were. The waters had changed from a blue-green tint to almost brown.

- They couldn’t see very well in front of them.

(Altina) “I was told to search for blueprints. The back of the crash site seemed like the most likely area to find some.”

(Juna) “Wasn’t this the one place all the Instructors told us NOT to go?”

(Ash) “Eh, I’m sure it’s fi-”

GROAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRR

- Altina looked to her right and almost stopped breathing when she felt her Seamoth shake violently.

- The Reaper Leviathan grabbed her Seamoth and swam towards the sand cliffs, slamming it down.

(Juna) “OH MY GOD, ALTINA!”

(Kurt) “We have to help her!”

(Ash) “GET THAT BASTARD!”

(Musse) “Arcus, activate!”

(Altina) “I REQUIRE ASSISTANCE-”

…

(Diluc) “…Hm. Class VII still hasn’t returned.”

(Elizabeth) “Oh dear, you’re right. Should we go look for them?”

(Venti) “I’m sure they’re fine. They’d just call us if they were in trouble.”

(Amber) “Still, this place looks pretty dangerous.”

(Helena) “I think we’re underestimating their skills. They’ll be back.”

- All of Class VII was on the Reaper Leviathan, stabbing it with tools and weapons while Altina was still in the seamoth, getting crushed.

(Altina) “CLASS VII, I AM PINNED HERE-”

(Juna) “DIE, DIE DIE DIE!-”

(Kurt) “THE SWORDS WON’T GO THROUGH!”

(Ash) “COME ON YA SON OF A BITCH!”

(Musse) “This rifle is going STRAIGHT INTO YOUR EYE-”

Garreg Mach Students getting used to the ocean

The Garreg Mach students flew out on their seagliders around the safe shallows, being instructed to grab whatever copper they could find.

Sitri followed them since everyone who had been here before was required to stick with a group.

Not to mention she had been here with Byleth before.

(Elizabeth) “Ugh, this is quite unpleasant…”

(Helena) “What, don’t like the ocean?”

(Elizabeth) “Helena, dear. I enjoy the ocean as much as any girl would-”

(Kairos) “Could’ve fooled me.-”

(Elizabeth) “Shut up, Kairos. And I like walking near the beach, and even swimming. But living inside it and fighting nature? No, I do not like it at all.”

(Stefan) “Y-Yeah this is a bit much for swimming.”

(Astrid) “Least we’re all getting our exercise!”

(Kairos) “…Sure.”

(Helena) “It’ll give us experience in case we ever need to swim underwater.”

(Elizabeth) “Where in Fodlan do we possibly need to swim?!”

(Helena) “With all the places the House keeps dragging us into, it might be handy. Hell, it came in handy for Sitri.”

The group stopped swimming and looked at Sitri, who was gliding right behind them.

(Sitri) “Well, I learned it on the fly like you all are currently. But it is helpful that we’ve been to this world before.”

(Stefan) “Just how many have you been to, Lady Sitri?”

(Sitri) “Let’s see…Here, that one world in the far future, the one where we had to hunt ghosts, the one with the talking animals…”

(Helena) “See? She now has skills that’ll be helpful for surviving in another world.”

(Kairos) “How many times has she been underwater for it?”

Sothis appeared behind Sitri, though the students didn’t seem to notice.

(Sothis) “If only they had met Aqua…”

(Sitri) Yeah, I bet they would’ve been terrified of Leviathans…

(Astrid) “Anyways, this place is seriously freaky. The giant sea monsters trying to eat us, and we can’t even use magic here!”

(Helena) “We could always visit the back of the ship like Class VII did.”

(Kairos) “A-ABSOLUTELY NOT, HELENA!”

(Elizabeth) “Do you have a deathwish, dear?!”

(Stefan) “It’s not so much them I’m worried about, as I am about the dark…”

Everyone shuddered.

(Helena) “That’s true, we can’t really see if something’s coming up from behind, and it might just emerge from the-”

(Astrid) “GAAH, SHUT UP SHUT UUUUP! Ugh, I wanna go back home…”

(Elizabeth) “Sitri, ma'am, how did you survive here last time?”

(Sitri) “Well we all took our own Submarines. I think if you ask Kazuma to ride with him on ‘The Wiz’ he’ll let you.”

(Kairos) “Does Professor Kazuma even know how to drive it?”

(Sitri) “Better than most of us did. The only other ones were the old staff.”

(Stefan) “Then what about you?”

(Sitri) “Um…”

(Helena) “Great confidence there, ma'am.”

(Astrid) “C-Come on, you can be a little nicer.”

(Kairos) “Let’s just go back inside, I’m suddenly feeling a bit queasy…”

[Happy Birthday Aigis!!] It had somehow never crossed his mind that his android companion had a birthday. Not that he found that strange or unnecessary, the girl was sentient enough that he could often forget she wasn't human (though her unique way of phrasing things was a pretty good reminder). Things had just been so hectic ever since he'd joined her little organization that it hadn't even occurred to him.

However, upon overhearing some of her compatriots talking about it a few days prior... well, he couldn't NOT get her something.

The tricky thing was figuring out what to get her. There wasn't a lot that an android was in need of, and he wasn't sure if she'd accept anything that didn't serve a purpose. But perhaps there was a middle ground? Something practical that could serve a purpose outside of a mission? It took him a bit to figure it out, but that line of thinking did bear fruit.

When she arrived to wake him up that morning... well, he was still asleep. She did tend to arrive at the crack of dawn, which tended to be around four hours after he got to bed in the first place. But he did try to be a bit more chipper about it, especially given the occasion.

"... morning-" He said groggily, slowly rising from his bed as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes. "And... happy birthday. Or would you prefer activation day? Production day..? Eh, doesn't matter. I got made you something-"

He had wanted to wrap it, but... well he kinda passed out as soon as he finished it. So instead he fired a web line to snag a strange metallic disk off his desk before handing it to her. It was an odd looking device, with a few buttons, what looked like a lense, and a way for her to interface with it directly... albeit that last part wasn't as well thought out. He didn't know what kind of cables she used, and he was 90% sure she wouldn't have Bluetooth given when she was made, so he kinda just... put in as many different kinds as he could fit on the thing-

"It's a bit complicated, and still needs some polish, but the gist is... it's a hologram emitter I've been tinkering with for a while. I thought it might be handy for you to be able to disguise yourself whenever we're jumping around on rooftops, to keep you from getting recognized. There's currently a few built in outfits, but you should be able to use to look however you want."

He pulls out his phone to show her the ones he'd built in.

"There's an armored look for hero-ing," which wasn't all that different to her usual look. It just hid her face, "-as well as both the summer and winter outfits for Shujin, just in case you don't have time to change."

The biggest advantage, and one he wasn't sure how to call attention to without being awkward about it, was the simulated skin on the summer uniform. Now she wouldn't have to cover herself head-to-toe to pass as a human. She could wear whatever, whenever, and nobody would be able to tell the difference... unless they touched her. Holograms can only do so much.

"You just pin it to your shirt, press a button or just... tell it to turn on if you're plugged into it, and bam! You can be a superhero or a normal high schooler in the blink of an eye!"

// Good lord this was so much longer than I meant it to be, but given the premise, I don't know how much shorter I could've made it. I know she can kinda already pass as human at school, but I thought this would be a cool way to give her a bit more options!

Happy Birthday Aigis 2024! || Accepting until September 12!

"Good morning, Amamiya-san! I..." Her voice trailed off as he greeted her with a birthday sentiment. "Did Mitsuru tell you?"

Before she could get a full answer though, he handed her the gadget he'd made and began walking her through its features. She had never had anyone make a device for her to use before aside from the Kirijo Group's science and technology department. No one outside of her creators had the talent, she guessed.

She started to play around with the device, the mask feature flickering brightly before the image of a brilliant blue morpho butterfly's wings appeared across her face, disguising it completely. The image reflected on Aaron's phone screen caused her to take a shocked step back, a distant memory of her sister, Metis, flashing through her thoughts.

She blinked rapidly and shut the device off, her Papillion heart fluttering quickly in her chest. "I see.. This is very impressive technology, Amamiya-san... I... I appreciate that you thought of me. This... This means a lot to me, thank you..."

She quickly stored the device in her pocket. She'd have someone in the labs install it into her properly once a full inspection had been made. Aigis turned her face away from him so he couldn't see her eyes, which had gotten watery. "This was a very nice surprise. Thank you."

Update on my P3R playthrough-

Aigis has joined the team (and I am only just now realizing it's pronounced Eye-gis and now Ay-jis... I'm stupid) and... I romanced Chihiro

I was debating on whether I wanted to go with her or one of the team, but... Yeah no, I have a type and she fits it.

And since I originally wrote this, because I have a bad habit of just letting these things sit in my drafts, I've gotten to actually see her in battle and... WOW, she's as awesome as I'd hoped. I mean, I'd seen her in the anime and a bit in P4 Arena, but seeing her here was just so much cooler, especially Orgia Mode Oh my LORD

She's like if War Machine had Captain Marvel powers. Just an absolute powerhouse that I never tire of seeing shred everything in her path.
