Mainline Pokémon Games Based on How Buggy They Are: A Thread
Red, Blue, & Yellow
Tumblr media
Pretty buggy. The Butterfree line set the stage for regional bugs and emotional trauma. Everybody loves Scyther. Inspired use of Cordyceps when designing the Parasect line. Kabuto and Kabutops should have been Bug to honor trilobites for founding Arthropoda. 8/10.
Gold, Silver, & Crystal
Tumblr media
Yes, we had Scyther, but what about second Scyther? Scizor, Heracross, and Shuckle are legends. Game Freak decided to invite arachnids (Spinarak and Ariados) to the party, truly redefining what it means to be buggy. 9/10.
Ruby, Sapphire, & Emerald
Tumblr media
This generation is loaded with bugs! Game Freak realized their mistake in not giving the Kabutops line Bug typing, making up for it with Anorith and Armaldo (who are based on Anomalocaris). They fumble the recovery, however, in not only depriving the Flygon line of Bug typing, but forever making them second fiddle to the Salamence line. The Beautifly, Dustox, and Ninjask lines introduce some interesting approaches to Bug-type evolution. Volbeat and Illumise are there. 7.8/10.
Diamond, Pearl, & Platinum
Tumblr media
DELELELELELEWHOOOOOOP! A smaller collection of bugs this gen, but a well-rounded one. Vespiquen slays. Scorpions get some love via Skorupi, Drapion, and Gliscor. Writing this post is making me realize that slugs, snails, and nudibranchs like the Magcargo and Gastrodon lines aren’t bugs. We grew up thinking snails were bugs, right? Anyway, Yanmega rules. 8/10.
Black, White, Black 2, White 2
Tumblr media
Game Freak’s magna opera. Truly the buggiest games there are. While you have to wait until Pinwheel Forest to encounter your first bugs, you’re rewarded upon arrival with Sewaddle and Venipede, the larvae of the Leavanny and Scolipede lines. From there, you encounter the Crustle, Galvantula, and Volcarona lines. Game Freak has some more fun with Bug evolutions, having Karrablast steal Shelmet’s armor as they evolve into Escavalier and Accelgor (inspired by the real-world interactions between the ground beetle family Carabidae and the gastropods they feed on). Durant is our first proper ant, and we get our first (and only . . . ) legendary / mythical Bug in Genesect. These games made Bug my favorite type. 10/10.
X & Y
Tumblr media
A big step down from the previous generation. This game hardly has any bugs. Do you like butterflies? You get a butterfly. Vivillon is a lovely butterfly that comes in all sorts of colors, but SURELY there are more bugs than that in France. 6/10.
Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon
Tumblr media
Giant isopods! Diving bell spiders! Giraffe stag beetles! A true return to form. While the native bugs of Alola are great, we are also introduced to the ultra beasts, two of which (Buzzwole and Pheromosa) are really cool bugs. It seems they were going for wasps and bee flies when designing the Naganadel and Ribombee lines, but they don’t really work for me. Faint blemishes on an otherwise buggy generation. 8.5/10.
Sword & Shield
Tumblr media
Centiskorch is the greatest Pokémon ever made. I have them tattooed on my arm. Blipbug is the worst Pokémon ever made. I see them in my nightmares. Interesting that they’re both Bug Pokémon, and that Game Freak really min-maxed with them. Fortunately, Blipbug evolves into Dottler and Orbeetle, who are great. Snom has a place in everyone’s heart, and Frosmoth is elegant as can be. 9.5/10.
Scarlet & Violet
Tumblr media
I love Rellor and Rabsca! I . . . don’t really love the rest! Iron Moth and Slither Wing are great, but they’re nepo babies. Tarountula and Nymble are nice, but Spidops and Lokix leave something to be desired. Orthworm is a a big worm. At the end of the day, these games would be alright if they weren’t so wonkily coded and glitchy. Wish there was a better word for that. 7/10.

This is Alicia! (me when the mini detail guide for an OC is cuter than the actual drawing of the OC)
Sorry it's blurry, I am way too tired to fix it. Happy 12 A.M. club!
Also @peachsodama this one was made because of your fluff piece "Like a Frosmoth to a Flame" I love you so freaking much, platonically and respectfully

This must be a little bit annoying but how would Melody react with the s/o who uses a Butterfree to fly ( they aren't couple )
Sometimes I forget I can like girls, then I look at Melony and remember I don’t have to choose.
I love writing for Kabu and Melony don’t ever apologize.
Also!!  If I ever did a request and you’d like me to do it for other characters then it’s fine to request it!!
--------
Melony is a mom
And when you decided to be her friend you signed up for having a second (or third) mother
So, like Kabu, she kind of freaks out a little bit when your Pokemon just picks you up and starts flying away
She will also chase after you and if she can’t keep up then she’ll send out her Frosmoth to get the two of you
When you’re back on the ground she will hug you in the tightest embrace ever
She may or may not start crying either
Melony is going to give you an earful about how you can’t just go around with your Butterfree like that
When you tell her that’s how it works in most other regions she doesn’t believe you at all
She is awestruck when you show her a video of your friend flying with their Pidgeot
Although Melony knows your Butterfree is most likely strong enough and capable of flying you through the sky, she would really appreciate if you didn’t
And don’t even think about lying to her, she has 5 kids she can smell a lie from a mile away
She, much like Kabu, just really cares about you and doesn’t want anything bad to happen

Nuzlocke: VS Leon
Here we go! Final fight of the Nuzlocke.
Starting off with Nike - don’t wanna waste Victoire too soon and Nike’s not gonna be much help later on.
oh fuck i FORGOT TO HEAL
Nike vs Aegislah --> Nike puts Aegislash to sleep, lands a Dream Eater before I switch to Vic. Victoire vs Aegislash --> Vic destroyed it immediately. Love that #teamwork. Leon sends out Haxorus. Ambrose vs Haxorus --> Taught Ambrose Ice Punch for this. Outrage is killer though. Was an unexpectedly rough fight.  Relied on a combination of Ice Punch and fatigue from Outrage, but Ambrose pulled it off. Moriarty vs Dragapult --> Moriarty is my new Dragapult and I trained her specifically for the fight. She tanked a Shadow Ball and then OHKO’d Leon’s Dragapult, in Simon’s honor. Rostam vs Inteleon --> This was easy, but poor Rostam was the only one I forgot to heal before the fight and he had to fight on half health. But he did great! Victoire vs Mr. Rime --> She obviously melted the freak. No contest. My fire starter is better, Leon. Reyna vs Charizard --> Both at level 65. Super stoked for this fight; I love seeing Dynamax Lycanroc. Immediately took a rough Max Overgrow - I forgot Charizard could learn Grass Knot - but luckily all it took was one Max Rockfall to beat the unbeatable dragon.
WE WIN!!!!! NO LOSSES IN THE LEON FIGHT AHHHHHH
IT’S OVER
FINAL TEAM: Victoire the Cinderace, lv 67 Nike the Noctowl, lv 66 Ambrose the Ludicolo, lv 66 Rostam the Toxtricity (Amped), lv 66 Reyna the Lycanroc (Midday), lv 65 Moriarty the Dragapult, lv 64
Badges: CHAMPION STATUS BABY
Deaths: 3 Harold the Drifloon, lv 19 Stella the Noibat, lv 35 Simon the Frosmoth, lv 63

Which pokemon do you like best in Sword and Shield? I fell in love with Appletun the moment I saw it.
I feel like a lot of people are in love with Appletun, lol. It is cute, but I’m beginning to feel bad for Flapple, which failed to garner much love comparatively. To tell the truth, I still need to actually play Sword and Shield, so I may change my mind on which monsters I like. Buuut, based on how they look:
- I love all three starter chains. Rillaboom is fun with the big drum they carry around, and the wild grass on the head for hair, lol. Cinderace is cute and has a really exciting signature move. Inteleon is cool with the themes put into them and has the best personality range, it seems. And, of course, all three of their first stages were equally cute! Very nicely done this gen.
- Corviknight was awesome from the second it debuted and I still can’t believe it’s just a generic bird.
(More below!)
- Thievul seems pretty basic looking, but I like that they have a relationship with Boltund, so that makes them both enjoyable.
- Coalossal is so cute looking? Like, have you seen one go fetch a ball at camp? They’re so adorable and happy, I love them.
- Toxtricity because I really liked the type combination. Both forms look cool, so I like that too.
- Grapploct is so odd, but I like it for that! Also, I watched them move and the weird mouth, so I got kicks out of those.
- Hatterene is scary and that makes me love her, it’s so great. She’s the unexpectedly terrifying Pokemon.
- Grimmsnarl, mostly because it’s an imp/demon fellow, and I’m kind of enjoying one being a Pokemon.
- For Galar form evolutions, I like Obstagoon, Cursola, Sirfetch’d, and Mr. Rime. Obstagoon was about the coolest evolution from a previous generation added in, very drastic change. Cursola horrifies me, but I love the idea they fleshed out so well. Sirfetch’d is an evolution we’ve waited YEARS for, and I’m happy to see Farfetch’d evolve into something so enjoyable and cool. Mr. Rime looks weird, but I find them cute? I like the tap dancing gimmick, it’s fun.
- Falinks are so freaking cute, and the more I see them online, the more adorable I find them.
- Snom is also super cute, and I love the memes they spawned. Frosmoth also looks pretty.
- Zacian and Zamazenta are also nice for this generation’s legendary duo. They’re big puppies, what’s not to like?
Um. I like a lot more from this generation than I expect. Yay Galar!

Top 5 Slot Stealers of Gen VIII
So, it’s time to discuss the slots in my Top 5 pokémon that Gen VIII stole! Each type title will be linked, so that you may go and view my top 5 Primary and Secondary Gen I-VII pokémon. You’ll notice I did my top 5 for both primaries and secondaries of that typing, but in this, I’m sticking only to primary slots.
For my Steel Type
Tumblr media
Perrserker was an instant favorite as soon as I saw it. It’s one of the very few in this lineup that actually took my number one slot for all time fav of its type. It’s really got a good thing going for it, and that’s saying something, because I do not like Persian. Perrserker surpassed Jirachi, Dialga, Klefki, Beldum, AND Mega Steelix.
Normal and Dark Type
Tumblr media
Generation 8 did not introduce any Normal type pokémon that piqued my interest well enough. However, it did introduce Grimmsnarl and THAT... IS A Good choice. A unique typing AND A WEIRD ??? HAIR??? MUSCLE MOTIF? ALRight! alright, into it. Very strange pokémon, very god design. Ultimately Grimmsnarl landed number 4 on my top 5 Primary Dark Type. Grimmsnarl trumped Hydriegon and Houndoom, but could not beat Guzzlord, Umbreon, nor Mega Sableye
Fire Type
Tumblr media
Let me tell you, if it weren’t for Charizard’s nostalgia factor, Centiskorch would be 100000% number 1. I love centipedes, and my ONE stipulation in Gen VIII was that I got a centipede. Like, not a horse-centipede- a straight up centipede. FOLX. They provided. I adore Centiskorch, and it makes it was to number 2 on my Primary Fire top 5. Centiskorch took the place over Turtonator, Blacephalon, Magmortar, and Mega Blaziken.
Fighting Type
Tumblr media
Like I laid out in the post, I hate the fighting type, oftentimes the designs are just not my thing. However. HOWEVER. Gen VIII put out some of my all time favorite fighting types ever. Grapploct took my number 1 slot easily and Falinks was RIGHT behind it at number 2. I really wanted an octopus this Gen, and I was sorely disappointed to see it was fighting type, but we can forgive it, because it’s really very good. These guys collectively beat Lucario, Marshadow, Mega Lucario, Passimian, and Hitmonlee.
Fairy Type
Tumblr media
For as much emphasis as Gamefreak put on the Glimwood Tangle, I thought there would be a bit more of a fairy focus? I guess it was really only Galarian Rapidash? Anyway, I love Zacian Hero of Many Battles, and it is a solid number 2 in my Top 5 Primary Fairy Type. Zacian claimed a spot above Granbull, Xerneas, Sylveon, and Snubbull, but unfortunately, I couldn’t bring it to number 1 over Aromatisse. I know that sounds unbelievable to the average playER I KNOW IT SOUNDS CRAzy but it’s the truth.
Psychic Type
Tumblr media
HOOOOOO BOYYYY DO I love Galarian Slowpoke. Why? No real idea. I mean, love how it’s low to the ground and how its tail drags behind it? It’s, in my opinion, very likely that it will evolve into some kind of poison secondary type (my favorite type), so I’m excited about that and I will 1000% be looking forward to the reveal. Psychic type is a REALLY good type, to me, so it only made it to slot number 3, but that’s pretty substantial considering how many psychic type pokémon I like over other types. This little guy beat Necrozma, Dusk Mane Necrozma, and Defense Forme Deoxys, but could not overtake Mewtwo nor Reuniclus. A babey. A smol child.
Poison Type
Tumblr media
Eternatus’ menu sprite is ... insanely huge, they really went all out with sprite sizes on the switch. Several of these had to be trimmed to fit into my little boxes. Although, for The Darkest Day itself, it ought to not fit into a small box... it is, after all, absolutely massive. Poison is my favorite typing, as I’ve said 2930829 times- and man... when I saw the design for Eternatus I was absolutely M I N D  B L O W N. It is VERY much up my alley. Despite this, it only ended up as my number 4 for Primary Poison. Eternatus took over Dragalge and Garbodor, but stayed behind Nidorino, Alolan Muk, and Salandit. Still solid... not bad at all.
Flying Type
Tumblr media
Of course, there are not very many primary flying types to choose from, but Gen VIII really just- added them without discrimination, it’s my opinion that this will be the new norm. Corviknight ended up as my number 3 Primary Flying Type pokémon, behind the Noivern family and in front of Tornadus’ formes.
Dragon Type
Tumblr media
Uhhhhh duh. How many top lists do you think this spiritual UNIT made this year? A ton, is the answer. Everyone loves Dragapult, and for good reason. It’s a really neat type combination, and also is ???? extremely OP. In addition to that its freaking TAIL? Is CLEAR? yeah, solid design, love it. Dragapult outsped Mega Altaria, Kommo-o and Zekrom and couldn’t quite beat Zygarde 10% and Zygarde 50% meaning it’s placed as number three on my fav primaries.
Ghost, Water, Ice, and Grass Types
Tumblr media
Whew, that skips a lot of types. Unfortunately there is not a single Ghost pokémon that beats even my number 5 spot, Altered Giratina. Nor my number 5 water, Clawitzer... oh... nor my number 5 ice, Bergmite. Yikes! However, claiming number 3 spot in my top 5 Grass Primary, we have Flapple! Flapple beat Torterra, Decidueye and Breloom and could not surpass Kartana nor Jumpluff. Jumpluff??? I know, it’s a nostalgia thing, I think. For the record! Appletun is probably at number 6. But!!! That’s not what we’re discussing, so too bad.
Bug, Rock, and Ground Type
Tumblr media
Don’t read the bug post where I said “this will definitely have some replaced” because it’s embarrassing now... so please don’t read those words that I said. I think I was thinking of Frosmoth and Centiskorch, but neither are primary bug, so... keep in mind, gen 8 introduced 3 primary bugs... 3............. bugs..... 3.... that’s nothing- and unfortunately, they didn’t even beat my number 5 spot, Golisopod. Likewise, rock is a really solid typing for me, so the threshold was my number 5: Cradily. I really freaking like Cradily, I do NOT know why. I have NO reason. Leave me alone. As far as ground goes. Yeah. We had a bit of a SHAKE up here. Runerigus, counterpart to the horrible Cofagrigus, somehow WIPED the platter clean and took the number one spot, surpassing Gliscor, Krookodile, Sandle, Trapinch, and Sandslash. But wait! Then it’s pre-evolved form, Galarian Yamask, also claimed spot 4- passing Trapinch and Sandslash. What a world! If someone had told me one year ago that Yamask was one of my favorite Ground types I’d’ve been... well... I’d’ve been very understandably confused...
Electric Type
Tumblr media
Duh. Also. I don’t understand why they made ToxtricitY LOOK LIKE THIS. It? Is sexy? Why? Why is it sexy? I want to be put down immediately for falling prey to this...??? Nonsense... Regardless, I can’t get enough of the awesome type combination that Amped Up Toxtricity (and Low Key) present. I think they really strove for an odd thing and I think it paid off. Amped Up Toxtricity beats Xurkitree and Elektross. I couldn’t say I like it better than Therian Thundurus, Ampharos, and Helioptile, though.
So that wraps up and finalizes my Top 5 Lists for now. I do actually think the Galarian Elemental Birds are gonna shake this apart, but, whatever, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. I also wonder how many more new pokémon they may introduce with the Expansion Passes.

Ok so this is a very Extra rough draft:
Victoria:
Arcanine, Falinks, Mienshao, Pangoro, Corviknight, and ace Blaziken. Falinks & Arcanine (with hidden ability Justified ofc) for the PRT/Wardens/Patrol, Mienshao for Warrior Monk, Pangoro bc dark-fighting (see Ashley) and to represent Vic’s darker side, Corviknight for type coverage and bc Vic is a Knight if ever there was one, and Blaziken bc I think fire-fighting is a perfect typing for her (tho if there were a constellation-themed fire-fighting type or smthn I’d do that).
Sveta:
Dragonair, Serperior, Tangela, Mawile, Leavanny, and ace Milotic. Dragonair & Serperior cuz they’re really pretty snake-y pokemon, Tangela has the body-made-of-whips thing down, Mawile has a few biting moves that trap/grapple but mainly I thought fairy/steel was a great type for Sveta and provides amazing coverage to an otherwise quasi-grass team, and then Leavanny is a fashionista grappler and Milotic is my absolute favorite of the snake-like body-type Pokémon!
Byron/Tristan (that’s right baybeee they’re a double battle)
Lunatone, Solrock, Galarian Darmanitan, Darmanitan, aces Frosmoth and Volcarona. Lunatone/Solrock are the double-battle icons of course, they fit the Capricorn astrological aesthetic, and you can slap a few ice moves on Lunatone by TM. Darmanitan/Galarian Darmanitan are perfect twin parallels with ice/fire, and Frosmoth/Volcarona basically do the same thing but with even more fire(and ice)power. I imagine their teams would change as their dynamic does, incorporating more water or rock pokemon at different times, but this is just one example team!
Kenzie:
Luvdisc, Alolamola, Inteleon, Audino, Claydol, and ace Stakataka. Luvdisc and Alolamola are hearts and that’s Kenzie’s Thing, Inteleon has a sniper scope and continues her quasi-water-typing, Audino is one of a bajillion support pokemon that could go here but is one of my faves for strength and versatility, Claydol has eyes and freaks people out, and i thought it would be funny if you beat up a little girls Luvdisk and she tosses out an UltraBeast with the justification “it’s a box pokemon! I can do sort of whatever if it’s a box!” Lol
Chris:
Eevee, Ditto, Smeargle, Porygon-Z, Hisuian Zoroark, and ace Silvally. “Im SOOOO normal you guys look my partner pokemon is an eevee, nothing weird about me. No need to look further. I just like to take on weird shapes for fun sometimes like ditto too I guess” he says. U can ask abt his Porygon being made from corrupted data, or his Hisuian Zoroark being the type that hates humans, or Silvally being an artificial Pokémon created in a lab. And Chris will be like “oh that’s wild I just wanted to be a normal-type trainer I never thought of that! Also fuck off!”
Rain:
Politoed, Yamask, Shedinja, Chandelure, Musharna, and ace Spiritomb. Politoed has Drizzle which makes it Rain! That’s Rain’s name! Then we have some ghosts cuz Rain helped massacre a shopping-mall full of people; Yamask is a child’s ghost, Shedinja is more a metaphorical “ghost of Rain’s old self” type of thing, and Chendelure is a Fire type cuz his name is Rain-o-Fire. Musharna cuz dream shenanigans. And then Spiritomb cuz while the rest of Rain’s team is like deceptively strong or gimmicky I think it’d be nice for him to just have a sick-nasty Ace.
Ashley:
Umbreon, Mandibuzz, Mismagius, Sneasler, Salazzle, and ace Hydreigon. Umbreon works for her whole “villainess stroking a cat” thing, then honestly I just chose 4 evil-looking Bad Bitches with good offensive coverage that leaned sort of dark-ish, then Hydreigon is a Dark type and really strong Dragon to boot and Ashley would love how powerful it is even if it’s not the most elegant. Almost gave her Swanna or a song pokemon like Jigglypuff cuz Swansong but whereas Rain would think the jokes were fine I think Ashley would rather die than use a pun-based Pokémon…
Anyway that’s my Breakthrough, thoughts?
What Pokémon team would the members of Breakthrough have?
