it was a dream, a nightmare in fact.

tears still continued to stream down her cheeks though as she tried calming herself down with a 5’11 boy shuffling around.

“it was a dream..,” she shakily mumbled to herself, calming her heart rate with its loud pounding in her ears.

the sleepy male took notice of her sitting up, small sniffles heard as she tried silencing herself.

“y/n? you okay?” jay’s groggy grumble of a voice spoke, eyes trying to make out the figure in distress.

it hadn’t been too long since he arrived home late from rehearsals, so his body was still draining him back to sleep.

she didn’t respond though. her throat was dry, voice almost too hoarse to speak with her body still shaking from the horrifying nightmare.

“hey darling, what’s wrong?” he softly murmured after taking in that she wasn’t answering back.

jay finally sat up as well with blinking eyes to get a better look at her.

“y/n?” he called out again, careful in his every movement as his hands reached towards her face, attempting to try and relieve her at once.

the girl sniffled, finally coming to meet her boyfriend’s face with soft tears and puffy lids that showed her concern.

his heart instantly sank at the sight, wondering what had happened while he was asleep.

it struck him awake, eyes no longer blinking from the exhaustion of waking up as he went closer to her.

“hey hey hey, what’s wrong love? did you have a bad dream?” jay sweetly questioned, wiping away her tears while patiently waiting for her to catch her breath from the tiring cries.

after seconds of waiting, he finally got his answer with a nod — “yeah… i had a dream that you..,” her voice stopped for a second, pain caught in her throat as she strived to finish her sentence — “.. cheated on me.”

the male’s jaw dropped once her words processed.

cheat? on someone like her?

his breath was kicked out of his lungs with the frowning thought that he would do such a thing to the girl he loved.

“y/n..,” he softly whispered before pulling her into a warming hug.

it healed her in every way possible, giving reassurance that he would never dare to do anything remotely close — but even then, he knew he could do more with his words.

as they hugged, he prompted, “i would never cheat on you. i would have to be the dumbest fucking guy alive to betray a special girl who’s worth keeping like you.”

he stopped, shakily sighing as he hated his dream self for cheating. “i wouldn’t even forgive myself if i pulled that crap, please know that i promise to never make you go through that in real life.”

jays grasp around her body was tighter as the thought of cheating was truthfully striking him as well.

his girls eyes closed to reel in the loving presence of it all while smiling.

of course she knew he wouldn’t do such a thing, but the utter shock of the dream being so real had her in a trance.

“i know you wouldn’t jay, everything just felt so real.” she confirmed, rubbing his back with her hands as she was comforting him now.

the two finally pulled away after her words, tears still lightly falling down her face as the boy wiped them away again. they stared at each other, both equally melting at the sight of their idiots in love.

with jay’s hands still holding her cheeks, he pulled her closer by the tug of them. leaning in closer as well while kissing where her tears dropped, giving a comforting reassurance within each one as he let out soft whispers of nicknames he’d always call her — ‘gorgeous,’ ‘love,’ ‘darling,’ ‘my girl.’

the two dumbly smiled at each other as they stayed gazing into one another before finally sitting up.

“last night was something, wasn’t it?” jay joked, slightly laughing at his own joke, leaving her to only roll her eyes playfully.

“jongseong!” y/n exclaimed his government name, letting the arm closest to him fly up and send a smack to the tall man.

he chuckled with the laugh, the opposite arm quickly reaching over to his other side as he uttered — “ah! my arm! you hurt it!! after what i did last night.”

she laughed at his stupid action before she automatically tried to send another hit to him, only to be stopped by her very own boyfriend.

his hands ran to hers first, getting a hold of her left wrist before getting her right when she attempted the other side.

“jay!” she whined.

his arms fully took control of hers now as she tried to wiggle her way out but couldn’t do much.

the handsome boy’s laughs were echoed throughout the apartment, smile widening with his body toppling over hers. he pinned her wrists down on each side of her head.

jay’s fluffy, black hair was now hanging down as his girl huffed out a defeated sigh once she had realized she had no way out.

his lips curled in satisfaction at his victory.

“you still gonna hit me?” he mocked, a smirk coming on as the smile left.

y/n still tried to wiggle and move around but ultimately gave up.

“jay.. this is no fun!” her whiny voice rang in his ears as he felt his heart flutter upon the thought of her.

FAVORITE CDRAMAS - 2024

This year, I finished 33 dramas (including minis, movies, one variety show, and some left over from previous years). Among those, these were my favorites, including a short "about" summary or an "explain this poorly."

NOTES

All of these are ancient costume dramas, unless noted specifically.

I don't care if a drama has a happy or a sad ending, as long as it's well written.

THE STARS: These are the ones that I not only super enjoyed, but also score great on all critical aspects: plot, writing, character depth, visual appeal, and the ability to capture and hold the viewer's attention. ✅Recommend! THE CHECKMARKS: They're great and I really, really enjoyed them, and they made me squee too🥰 but they're not as technically perfect as the ones above. Still awesome dramas, and I recommend them! ✅Recommend! OTHERS I WANT TO TALK ABOUT: They're not a third tier, or an honorable mention. Generally, they're not that great technically, or missed the list by a botched ending, or something in the technical aspects was missing, but I enjoyed them nevertheless and want to talk about them for some reason. Other than that, they're just listed in the order in which I watched them.

SUBTITLES: Please help stop the prejudice against Mango subtitles. Everything I've watched from them this year has had excellent subs.

ON ROMANCE: Though I appreciate it, I'm not really all that much into the romance aspect of dramas. I say this because I know many people watch them specifically for the romance, and I've seen comments asking how soon the couples kiss. At the end of a drama, I tend to not even remember if they kissed or not (unless it was memorable - either because it was a very good kiss or a very bad one😂). So, with that disclaimer said...

THE STARS

"A JOURNEY TO LOVE" Liu Shishi, Liu Yuning, Alen Fang, He Landou, Chen Youwei, Wang Yizhe

I watched half of this in January and it was broadcast after I posted my faves from last year, so it goes in this year's list.

Premise: Emperor is kidnapped. No one really wants to rescue him. Ning Yuanzhou (Liu Yuning) puts together a team of Ocean's Eleven Ning's Six to bring him back, including an assassin, a crossdressing princess, an angry doctor, a womanizing archer, an engineer puppy, and an animal-loving defense specialist.

"LOVE YOU SEVEN TIMES" Ding Yuxi, Yang Chaoyue

Left over from 2023.

Premise: Seven shorter stories strung together by the overarching plot of trying to recover the God of War's powers and figuring out what happened with a powerful evil fairy.

"BELL RINGING" Li Daikun, Song Fangyuan

Mixture of modern and ancient, but modern is main. Twelve 20-ish minute episodes.

Explain it Badly: The tragic story of what happens when you don't read the fine print when signing a (magical) contract. [I reviewed it properly here.]

"THE LEGEND OF SHEN LI" Zhao Liying, Lin Gengxin

Explain it Badly: The goddess of war has become a chicken. An unfeeling immortal feels. This is catastrophic. But first, he buys the chicken.

"IN BLOSSOM" Ju Jingyi, Liu Xueyi

Premise: Coroner gets kidnapped and subjected to a forced face transplant by jealous socialite who wants her boyfriend. Socialite marries coroner's BF but is killed at the wedding. Coroner, who now looks like the socialite, teams up with former boyfriend (who doesn't know about the face swap) to solve cases.

"UNCHAINED LOVE" Dylan Wang, Chen Yuqi

Left over from 2022, actually.

Explain it Badly: The empire's Most Eligible Eunuch, who everyone wants to bed, and the concubine who really Does Not Want to die with the dead emperor. [I wrote about it more properly here.]

"CALL ME BY FIRE - SEASON 4" Singing variety show

Not a drama, but I'd really be remiss if I didn't include it here. The grip this show had one me! I'll just copy what I wrote before:

Explain it Badly: Call Me by Fire is going to ruin me for normal concerts. What do you mean your show doesn't have singing, dancing, playing instruments, Peking Opera, acting a whole cinematographic mini movie with costumes, flying and dancing on wires, fighting live without doubles, the multilevel moving stage burning, explosions, drowning, trees falling, *WHEEEZE!* and fake rain all at once?! ...That explains it pretty well, actually.

I started watching this for Miyavi and then I was HOOKED.

Premise: Actress transmigrates into a drama she's acting in ... as a character who's about to be killed because her husband has just died! She must save him, solve the mystery of his murder to save herself, break a time loop, and return to the real world.

"LOVE IN THE DESERT" Alen Fang, Hankiz Omar

A Secret Third Option (Why I liked it): I really enjoyed watching this; it was very different from other costume dramas. From the setting (desert tribes instead of high-society cities) to the soundtrack, to the "This is allowed now?" moments, this was different in a good way. The costumes were so many (about 1 every 2 eps for FL, and a whole bunch for 2FL, + other characters) and every single one of them was top notch; the best I've seen in a cdrama so far.

"LOVE GAME IN EASTERN FANTASY" Esther Yu, Ding Yuxi

Almost a Star: This was a super fun drama. :D It's lighthearted, and the first five episodes are laugh-out-loud funny. Everyone's really nice, even most of the villains - you end up feeling for them as well, and most of them redeem themselves. And all characters are fully fleshed-out, even the mini-villains the party encounters along the way. Esther's costumes are SO pretty, too. [I did a proper review of it here.]

"BLOSSOM" Meng Ziyi, Li Yunrui

Almost a Star: This drama surprised me by doing time travel AND "going against fate" differently. I also liked how, despite looking like it would go in that direction, it wasn't a revenge drama, but the protagonist really tried to make life better for everyone. Good plot, good writing all throughout, good characterization, keeps your interest. The first full-length drama I watch from a director whose minis I enjoy. Definitely recommend!

OTHERS I WANT TO TALK ABOUT

"SECRETS OF THE SHADOW SECT" Hu Yiyao, Lin Zehui

Mini drama. 24 eps x 12 min

Almost a Checkmark. Honestly, I don't remember why this wasn't a checkmark. But I also honestly cannot remember the ending. So maybe that had something to do with it. However, before that, the cinematography and sets were beautiful and the plot was interesting and well-written. The characters were engaging, as well.

"HEART OF ICE AND FLAME" Huang Tingting, Li Daikun

Mini drama. 24 eps x 10 min. Cliffhanger ending.

Ep 24 is a cliffhanger and a hook for a new plot. You can take ep23 as an ending, if you want, I guess. The production value was low, but the plot was good, and the main characters were such endearing dumbasses. The two leads play 3 characters/personas each, and each has their own distinct personality and has iconic moments. ML's main persona (dumb prince) unknowingly marries all 3 of FL's, each for different reasons, and she (in reality a former general) plays along because she wants his heart (literally). Then there's the wizard who's stuck in a snow avalanche but can still send and receive messages. And Chen Zihan, who played Tragicomic Ghost in Word of Honor, plays the mother of scorpions here. TW: If you have a phobia of bugs, probably skip this one.

"BUTTERFLIED LOVER" Rain Lu, Zhao Yiqin

Mini drama from 2023. 22 eps x 20 min

I pretty much try anything from this director because he's honestly top notch. Absolutely stunning works, visually!

Ancient vampires, pretty much. The only reason it didn't rank higher for me was personal - as I mentioned at the beginning of the post, I'm not really into plots that focus only on the romance. But if you enjoy romance plots, I definitely recommend you check this out!

"THE DOUBLE" Wu Jinyan, Wang Xingyue

Almost a Checkmark. Revenge plot and fake identities. For most of the drama, I thought this was amazing, and then I wasn't too thrilled about the ending arc. But the drama was really well done. Visually beautiful, with fun and interesting characters, and multiple, parallel plots, which is something I like. Amidst all the tragedy, it also had two comic relief characters that I enjoyed a lot (the turtle cousin and the attendant who apparently didn't know how to use stairs).

"LOVE'S REBELLION" Zhang Linghe, Jing Tian

Reason to Watch It: Appreciate Zhang Linghe looking 🔥 sometimes evil and sometimes not, and a pretty whale town that reminded me of Kilika from Final Fantasy X (mostly X-2 because of the pastel colors). The characters and their interactions were fun. The villains did a good job being hateable. Pity the frustrating omission of a key fight - what was so problematic about ML's brain-fight with the demon that they had to cut it?? We were left wondering what happened in there.

A drama that you "watch for the plot" The "plot" = *points at video above* If you watch dramas for the kissing scenes and you don't mind every character being toxic, this is a drama for you.

Really good artistic direction (sets and costumes, camerawork, colors, lighting, music timing, etc.), and honestly the best kissing scenes I've seen in a cdrama (note I did say Chinese drama, and I've only been watching since 2021). And extra kudos to Duan Yixuan for her brave dubbing of FL (note: same voice actress who dubbed Bai Lu in "Till the End of the Moon"). Why "brave?" *points at the video again*😳

"THE STORY OF PEARL GIRL" Zhao Lusi, Liu Yuning

Almost a Checkmark. Would have been a solid Checkmark if not for the last episode. I have nothing against what the last ep told us, but rather against how they told it. It could have been 15-20min long and it would have been stronger for it. I do understand that the dragging was meant as a narrative parallel to how the characters wanted to extend the time they spent together as much as possible (as shown by the very slow soup-drinking and dregs-scraping), but, personally, I lost my patience with the method. Then, on the second half of that ep, it would have been nice if, instead of just showing the meeting from a neutral POV, they'd done it from the protag's POV, letting the viewer experience her emotional turmoil and distraught-ness, much like they did when she was diving for pearls at the beginning. Finally, the very last scene, with the camels, told a story but felt detached; they could have shown an aged version of the character leading into that narration.

I'm currently watching other December releases, but if they make the list, I'll include them in next year's.

Lewisohn vs. Wenner Pt. 1 of 2

I kid, I kid! Of course I'll adjudicate things between these lads.

I'm working on the follow-up(s) to my Kim Bennett post, but I lack the degree of coherence necessary to finish them at the moment. My household has been hit with Covid and influenza, so I'm too sleep deprived to string together a proper point. But I can still check citations, baby!

Today we're tackling a fun source: Jann Wenner, co-founder of Rolling Stone magazine and early-70s confidante of the LennOnos. Mark Lewisohn quotes interviews conducted by Jann Wenner ten times in Tune In; nine of those quotes had issues. Nine of the ten quotes come from the infamous Lennon Remembers interview (conducted in Dec. 1970 and first published in Jan. 1971); the other one is from a different 1970 interview for Rolling Stone. A few of these have been covered by @mythserene; I've included links to her analysis.

About half of Lewisohn's Wenner-sourced 'quotes' are Textbook Multi-Source Frankenquotes. Lewisohn does this quite brazenly--if you look at the text of the endnote, it will say something like "First and third parts of quote from Bip Bop Weekly, second part from interview with...." The multi-source quotes will appear in part two; this post will include the single-source ones.

Pictured text is from Lennon Remembers (Verso, 2000 ed.), but I made my comparison against the audio of the interview. You can listen to it on YouTube here. I've included time stamps as well as page numbers for each quote.

Tune In 33-2 vs. Wenner p.65 (1:49:24), 145-6 (4:16:43)

I do not like the way Lewisohn wrote/cited this--each quote from the Beatles is pulled from a different source, but it's presented almost as a dialogue. It would be simple stuff to slap an endnote after each quote giving its source, rather than using a single endnote for all four separate quotes.

That's just a quibble, but this quote delivers a big issue as well. See that ellipsis? Lewisohn is letting you know that he left out over two hours of recorded interview between the first and second parts of this quote. You can use an ellipsis to omit a few words or a sentence or two in the same passage--you can't use it to omit multiple hours of conversation.

An ellipsis would be perfectly acceptable between the fragment and the final sentence, but Lewisohn chose not to use one.

Tune In 24-33 vs. Wenner p.63 (1:44:58)

I have come to love those instances were Lewisohn throws in one token ellipsis as if that will distract from the fact that he completely scrambled the order of the sentences.

Tune In 31-44 vs. Wenner p.27 (54:46)

@anotherkindofmindpod discussed this in their Fine Tuning series - I believe in the episode "Leader Lennon." I won't hit it too hard.

As you can see, the context in the source text is wildly different from its use in Tune In. In the original, John is discussing confronting the Maharishi about rape allegations. In Tune In, Lewisohn uses it in the context of….discussing a song choice with George Martin. A bit different. John does imply some universality in the source quote (“as usual”), but this still seems like a stretch. Also note the omission of the word “actually” in the phrase “I actually had to be the leader,” which, to my reading, implies that John wasn’t constantly in Leader Lennon mode, unless the others were forcing him to handle the dirty work.

Hiii first off, flesh and blood is absolutely brillant, i love the story so much, you did amazing on it. I love reading your anon responses going more in depth with the story.Second the song inspo was also an amazing choice, theres a version by donny hathaway that i 100% recommend, its slower paced but its really good if youre interested in listening to it. About the song theme, I actually chose it because he sounded angry. The way he sings it is like he's angry at his lover, because she didn't reciprocate his love. If you read the lyrics (and I'm sure you have), you'll find that he keeps professing his love in a selfish way;

I've listened to Hathaway's version, and I gotta say that it fits my other story instead. It's more mellow, and definitely softer in tunes. Thank you for the recommendation, It definitely goes into my playlist ^^

If you ask me about her escape, I'd say that she'd get help from a third party. Maybe the government or some military groups will try to punish him for his war crimes, which results in her getting rescued. I've talked a little bit about his ending (not ending as in dying) here, and I think he'd point his gun at her when he's close to getting captured. But he'll end up sparing her life, because he can't pull the trigger.

Of course he'll go crazy when she's gone. It's like losing your most prized possession to someone else. Like, can you imagine losing your house (or anything, really) so suddenly, and you can't do anything about it? That's how he feels.

This is a bit dark, but I think he'll try to find her again. And when he does, he won't hesitate to shoot her if she refuses to come back. Then again, it'll only happen when she escapes.

i had the sweetest leveling roulette experience in vanaspati where the healer + other dps were both new and i had only done it once, we all died on the second boss except for the paladin so we were all just cheering her on & emoting at her in the chat from outside the arena EHEDFN <33. and then on the third boss it was just me and her who survived so we did it together and ough :’). she kept casting clemency + cover on me to keep me alive and i made sure to keep her in crest of time returned-range and awwh it was so fun . we won and all cheered about it afterwards ehehe <)!!!!!!!!!! <3333

Änglagård (2023). I admit it's a bit of a weird relationship I have with this show – I think there's so much wrong with it, especially when it comes to dramaturgy, and that feels very frustrating to me. But I'm also seeing it for the third time next week, can't wait, and listen to the cast recording all the time.

...though I guess that's more or less my relationship with Jekyll & Hyde too, so maybe it's actually exactly on brand of me to love Änglagård. I can't stop myself from enjoying these problem shows.

6. Who is your favourite musical theatre director?

Answered, but let's talk about a close second.

Tuomas Parkkinen. Of course. When you direct a production of Jekyll & Hyde that worms its way directly into my brain, takes over a large chunk of it for over a decade, and absolutely refuses to leave, you're a forever favourite, no matter what you do afterwards. And that's not to say he hasn't directed other musical productions that I've enjoyed, too – at his best, he has a mischievous (sometimes to the point of bordering chaotic energy) but at the same time extremely well thought out vibe that I really like! Case in point: Evita (2020), gone too soon but never forgotten.

About that Så som i himmelen, though... I've been throwing so much shade on it, I can't not mention it here. Of course, since I refused to actually go and see it based on everything I heard about it, I don't think it'd be quite fair of me to hold it against him. But oh man. Let's just say he apparently sees my favourite musical from a perspective I can't even begin to understand, and probably vice versa.

33. Talk about a performance in a role that you can't forget.

I still think about Morgan Alling as Harold Zidler daily. Just spin him around in my brain. He was perfect in a way I don't really have words for, he just made me like the character so much, I wanted to watch him all the time and lift him from the stage and put him in my pocket so I could put him on my bookshelf back home and always keep him?? Just so enjoyable to watch every second he was onstage. I loved him. I want him back.

48. What's the worst musical you've ever seen? What made it so bad?

The Prince of Egypt was such a thorough downgrade of every aspect of the source material that I doubt... well, I hope no other musical will ever be able to let me down like that.

Maybe, had I seen it without any prior knowledge of the movie and the story of Moses and whatever, it wouldn't be the absolute worst I've seen – it did have some nice choreography, and the original songs will always be bangers, even when butchered like some of them were – but when compared to the movie and my sky-high expectations, and then the fact that we went all the way to Denmark to see it... for me, it really doesn't get any worse than that.

Cats. I don't think I would be the person I am today without it, really, but I also don't consider myself a fan. I had an intense three-month relationship with it back in the day, and that was it, pretty much.

Ethan: Unintentional flirt but I suppose Subtle Flirting is the closest. He has a dry wit, which can be appealing to some (aka Cassie). When he puts his mind to it, he is very successful, but he also doesn't have the patience for it.

Sienna: She's a mix of Sincere and Polite flirting. She pays attention, active listening, eye contact and compliments. She's all about building deeper connection, but Max brings out her playful side.

Cassie and Max: The twins are very flirty and always have been. It just comes naturally to them (and often gets them into trouble). Their styles are a mix of playful, physical and witty.

Ethan was surprised by how much Cassie treasured her alone time and quiet time. He always assumed she was an extrovert who needed people around her. But she likes the balance and is happy to stay home and read or watch TV. Cassie was surprised that Ethan enjoys cuddling on the couch (or in bed) and feeling connected physically. Physical touch is one of his love languages.

Max and Sienna knew each other extraordinarily well before they started dating because they had been friends for so many years. As such, there weren't any major surprises. Still, Sienna was surprised by how serious he could be, and seeing him in his world was eye-opening. Max was equally surprised by her stubbornness.

Cassie often borrows Ethan's old tee shirts and refuses to give them back. He thinks she looks better in them anyway. Sienna tends to sleep in Max's shirts when he's traveling. She also borrows his old college hoodies when she's chilling at home.

Cassie wasn't allowed to have pets for the longest time because they would run away. But one day, in the distant future, she'll have Watson (who technically belongs to her children). You can read about that here.

aussie jangle pop recs hi!!! okay okay so the first that comes to mind are the go-betweens, aka who i grew up with the most. their biggest hit was definitely streets of your town, and some other good songs are love goes on!, was there anything i could do?, spring rain, head full of steam, and bye bye pride (also the founder of the band is the father of one of the members of the goon sax!! aka band i sometimes post about)

another good band is the church, some song recs are under the milky way & almost with you AND the third rec is almost with you & bury me deep in love by the triffids

YES DUNEDIN SOUND i forget who i've mentioned these too before but there were two random dunedin films (neither of which i've seen so idk) where the soundtracks were all dunedin sound music - they're called scarfies & topless women talk about their lives & playlists of them are on spotify. they're really good intros into the whole thing i think & a fair bit of variety as well

my favourites are saskatchewan by superette, point that thing somewhere else by the clean and north by north by the bats - love not given lightly is a song that i knew as a kid but i only realised that was what it was recently cos it came on and i was like AHH THIS ONE!?!??!?! hehe (thats by chris knox). pink frost by the chills is also a banger
