#and Dean and Cas must STAND ON THEIR OWN before entering into a healthy relationship together

Sam was unquestionably there at some point during the ordeal that ended with Cas in the Ma'lak box, but Dean still said "when I buried him" which is unusual use of the singular for him, so clearly intentional. It's the widow's "When I buried your father" to her children. The children were likely there, but the phrase implies intimacy. Anyway, I AM DEAD AND BURIED AFTER THAT THANKS BOBO
EXCUSE ME NONNIE SHUSH
There was a blatant callback in tone, depressive/grief dialogue - everything - to Cas’ previous deaths, 13x03 in particular:
And as you said, YES, we’re all aware that TPTB built up pertinent meanings behind the singular vs plural.
Channeling 12x23!Dean wrapping Cas in yellow-sun-oriented drapes alone, Dean buried Cas alone – in a MA’LAK BOX, ONE OF WHICH HE ORIGINALLY BUILT FOR HIMSELF (I also found this small yet significant detail CRAZY-angsty because the on-the-nose symbolism of Dean burying his soul, burying his deeply rooted romantic love for Cas, locking them away, since he both A. lost his chance to further their mending relationship and B. lost his will to FIGHT, to LIVE, without Cas by his side – Cas, oh Cas, who purposefully and WILLINGLY took on the MoC that afflicted Dean, blackened Dean’s radiant soul, and poisoned Dean against him, Dean’s Colette – was meaningful on its own and like…obvious to me. I yelled and died and yelled again, friends. Sam was literally given repeat insight re: the exact nature of his brother’s bond with Cas and, orchestrated visions or not, Sam couldn’t bear seeing where it led –> a crappy-ass, cheap gag unhappy ending where Sam and Dean can’t have what - WHO - they love (the ‘if the brodependency continues’ strongly stated by Emotive Berens). GOING OUT LIKE BUTCH AND SUNDANCE SUCKS, SAM! IT’S THE WORST ENDING! THIS SHOW NO LONGER HOLDS THE BACKWARDS ESSENCE OF YOU AND YOUR BROTHER AS TOXIC-CODEPENDENT ENTITIES, BUT CHUCK, the ultimate Bibro, WANTS IT). Bobo then recapitulated the romantic parallels of Sam/Eileen vs Dean/Cas, with grieving!Dean pointing out Sam’s loss of Eileen) - it doesn’t get any more intimate than this.
I MEAN I have SO MUCH MORE TO SAY sorry I ended up rambling BUT IT’S LATE SO FOR NOW POINT IS–
15x09 was a self-directed plethora of singular ‘I’. Only Dean, and Dean alone, expressed the paramount importance of Cas in his life. He wasn’t using Plural ‘We’ as the shield to his feelings any longer. He took a GIGANTIC INTERNAL LEAP FORWARD.
It was made explicit that without Cas, after everything, Dean becomes an empty, hollow shell of himself.

Down the Rabbit Hole part 3
Summary: What happens when Dean gets everything he wishes for?
Characters: Dean x Reader
Word Count: 2,300
Warnings: Lots of angst, Language, mentions of death, mentions of serious medical conditions
A/N: I wrote part one for @nichelle-my-belle ‘s angst challenge! My prompt was “I destroyed myself so you couldn’t hurt me.” I was really happy with how the first part turned out and the story in my head wouldn’t stop. So this was a three-part series, this is the final piece. This part is from both reader & Dean’s POV. I would love any feedback.
Catch Up: Part One, Part Two
Memories/ Flashback are in Italics
Heaven is Bold ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that.” ~ Lewis Carroll (Through The Looking Glass)
***Dean’s POV***
No Demon would make a deal, no Reaper was willing to help and no Angel could heal her. She has been gone for over a year now, she was alive but she was lost within herself. I hoped she was happy where ever she was, I visited her every chance I could. Until finding a way to rid myself of the mark took me away… after a while I just couldn’t bring myself to see her that way. Then there was Amara. She reminded me so much of Y/N, I was drawn to her. I was drawn to her like a ride to the moon.
I don’t know what it was exactly, but when I am near her I feel like I am with Y/N. Amara made me feel things I haven't felt since I was with Y/N.
“Do you think we could be happy like this forever?” She asked as she was laying across my chest.
“I don't see why not.” I sigh heavily.
“The mark is changing you, I can see that what if it makes you not want me anymore?” She looks up and I can see tears in her eyes.
“Hey don't cry. I will never not want you.” I lean down kissing her forehead. “You have nothing to worry about.”
I was wrong. The mark did change me it made me into more than a Demon. It made me into a monster. A monster that hurt the woman I love.
That's what brought me here, loaded with souls ready to end Amara. I was ready to give my life to save the world. I didn't care what happened to me, I only cared about my family, Sam, Cas and more importantly Y/N. I was ready to die, but when I see her and she tells me she knows about the souls I realize I can't do it, more importantly I realize I don't want to.
“He didn't want this. He zapped me here but he doesn't want you dead, you're family.” I try to reason with Amara. “He doesn't want any of this.
“I just wanted to hurt him, I wanted to make him pay.” I can see the hurt and anger in her eyes. It reminds me of the night I lost Y/N.
“That's revenge, I've been there. Me and Sam we've had our fair share of fights, but no matter how bad it got we always made it right because we are family. We need each other, you might be an all powerful being but I think you're human when it counts. You need your brother.”
I try to reason with her, urge her to reconcile with her brother. I can see she is caving, her wish for revenge washing away. Then out of nowhere Chuck appears. He is confused until Amara explains and he apologizes. I feel the victory when she heals him. They agree that they need to go away and be alone. Chuck takes the souls from me and before they leave Amara turns and looks at me.
“Dean you gave me what I needed most, I want to do the same for you.” Then they disappear in a cloud of smoke.
Unsure of what she meant I stand there flabbergasted. I can't believe I was able to stop the end of the world and no one got hurt. That’s when my phone rings, bringing me back from my confused state. “Hello.”
“Mr. Winchester, this is Dr. Hubbert with the Freemen Clinic and I think you should get her fast.”
Confused I ask “Is Y/N okay? Did something happen to her?” The terror building and concern lacing my voice.
“We need you to get here as soon as possible.” Then she hangs up.
With nothing but adrenaline fueling me I quickly find where I am and rush to the clinic.
~*~ Y/N POV ~*~
Dean is in the kitchen making me pancakes while dad and Sam are reading over lore for a case we are working. Everything is perfect, we have no worries.
I enter the kitchen, wrapping my arms up and around Dean’s chest. I lean my head against his back “If you keep doing this, these pancake are never going get done.” He lets out a low laugh that vibrates through his back. I could get lost listening to the sound of his heart beat. He turns and wraps his arms around my waist. He lifts me up and places me on the counter, once I am eye level with him he leans in placing his forehead against mine.
He leans in kissing me slowly at first, his lips are warm and soft. I grant his tongue entrance as the kiss gets more passionate. He only pulls away when the need for air is critical. I look at him and he is about to say something. “Miss Y/L/N, can you hear me?” the voice is not Deans. He is saying the words but it’s not his voice. “Miss Y/L/N, can you hear me.”
That’s when I see a strange woman in the corner of the room, she has a soft glowing light around her. “Y/N, I am doing this for Dean, because you are what he desires most.” The light around her gets bigger and brighter until it fills the room.
You close your eyes giving yourself a moment to adjust but when you open them you are in a hospital room hooked up to machines.
There are doctors standing around me. Their lips are moving but it takes a moment before I can hear them. “Ms. Y/L/N, can you hear me?”
I nod not trusting my voice to answer for me.
“Good, Ms. Y/L/N you overdosed and were in a coma for over a year can you remember anything?”
Suddenly everything starts to come back to me. I remember everything, I remember Dean pushing me away and I remember losing myself to drugs. My eyes burn with tears and I nod yes again. This seems to satisfy the doctors and she turns to the others silently mumbling something else the. She turns back to me.
“Ms. Y/L/N we are give you some time to adjust to the information and get some rest. We already notified your family and they will be here shortly, for now you should rest.” She smiles a soft reassuring smile and turns and leaves.
My memories return in waves, some good but most were bad. I feel the sudden urge to stand and go to a mirror. Getting out of bed proved to be difficult, I put more faith in myself then I should have. As soon as I tried to stand I fell to the ground bruising my knees in the process. It takes a couple more tries before I am successfully on my two feet. I head to the bathroom, turning on the light I am greeted with an unfamiliar face. My once shoulder length hair is almost to my waist and my face is thinner. My eyes are slightly sunken in and my appearance gives me a chill.
***Deans POV***
Time went by in a blur, I was at Y/N’s clinic in two hours flat. I immediately head to her room, hoping, no praying she was ok.
I am stopped by Dr. Hubbert “Mr. Winchester, Y/N is fine she just woke up.”
All at once it hits me, this is what Amara was referring too… She brought Y/N back for me. I can’t contain my excitement… my hope.
“She is still a little shaken up but she wants to see you, she hasn’t stopped asking for you. She is lucky she was in the coma while her body went through withdrawals but she may still turn back to drugs, especially if she goes through anything traumatic.”
I nod to show her I understand and make a beeline to Y/N’s room. Before I enter I catch a glimpse of her through the door window. I know it has been awhile since i’ve visited her but awake she looks completely different. She looks beautiful, she always does but she looks like time has worn her. Her hair is longer and she looks tired. Taking a deep breathe I head in.
“Dean, you came.” As soon as I enter she perks up instantly, like she sensed I was there. “You’re you again, you’re not a demon anymore.”
“Of course I came sweetheart.” I make my way to her bedside. “How did you know?”
“I can just tell, I can feel it.” She looks up to me her Y/E/C eyes sparkling. “I’ve missed you. I am so sorry Dean, I am so sorry I couldn’t stay strong.” A darkness fades over her eyes as she remembers the things she has done.
“Oh sweetheart, I don’t wanna talk about that. I’ve missed you too.” I grab her hand, kissing the back of it. She looks up to me, reaching up she grabs the nape of my neck pulling my lips to hers. The kiss starts tentative, as we become familiar with each other again. Familiar quickly turns to passion and we kiss until we can’t breath.
Once we pull apart I look at her “I don’t want to ever be apart from you again, I don’t like who I am without you.” In that moment every happy thing I felt went out the window. I realized the toxic-ness of our relationship. She would never admit it but I am no good for her.
Her happiness depends on me, if I am not her constant she will not be healthy. I wished we could go back before the mark back when we were happy. “I think you should get some rest, I'll be here when you wake up.” I kiss her forehead and settle into the chair next to the bed.
It was one of those nights where the air was cool and crisp. Y/N and I sneak off leaving Bobby and Sam to dig for a case on their own. We lay down out in the middle of an open field. Looking up at the stars, hand in hand, settled in a comfortable silence.
“What do you see our future like Dean?” She turns her head and looks at me.
“What do you mean?” I ask confused.
“Forget about hunting, forget about the constant danger. When you think of your future what do you see?” Even in the night sky I can see the sparkle in her eyes.
“Well if I wasn't a hunter I could see us settling into an apple pie life… maybe a couple kids. But we both know there is no life without hunting, we can't get out of it. So I'd be ok with any future for me as long as you are safe and happy.”
“Even if that means we aren't together?” I can hear the concern in her voice.
“Especially if we aren't together. I don't care who you're with or what you're doing as long as you are safe and happy princess.” I know it isn't the answer she was looking for but it was the truth. As long as she is safe i don't care what I get.
“Dean… Dean?” Cas’s voice brings me back to reality. “Why did you call me here? Shouldn't you be in there with Y/N?”
“Cas I need you to do something for me… I need you to not ask any questions either.”
He thinks my request over a bit before he answers “Ok. What do you need from me?”
I briefly consider changing my mind. I know I can’t though, no matter how much I want to. “I need you to erase Y/N’s memories. All of them of hunting, of me and most importantly the things she did while I was a demon.”
“Dean are you sure?” Cas looks at me in disbelief.
“Yes, she will not truly be happy until she has forgotten all of it.” He doesn’t respond, he only nods and heads into her room where she is sleeping. He places his hand on her temple a blue light glows from his hand. He is in there for a few minutes before he exists.
“It is done. I will take care of the doctors and work out all the details. When she wakes she will not remember you.” Castiel walks away headed to change the doctor’s memories as well.
When she wakes I stop in to make sure she has truly forgotten. I stand in the doorway and it takes her a moment to realize I am there. She smiles her beautiful smile “Hi, who are you?”
It feels like a dagger to my heart. I only just got her back and I had to lose her all over again. “I’m Dean, the guy who hit you… I uh I lost control for a minute and I just wanted to say that I’m sorry. I’m real happy you’re ok, I’m real glad your life can get back to normal now.”
She looks at me nodding with understanding. “I’m ok so that’s what is important, right?”
“Yea.” I try to keep it together, not to break down and ask Cas to reverse it all. Then I remember just because you love someone, doesn’t mean you should stick around and screw with there life. “Anyway I’ll leave you alone. You take care of yourself.”
With that I take my leave feeling my whole world crumble around me. I take a deep breath and let my tears fall freely, taking solace in the fact she will be happy and safe.

Into the Mystic Masterlist - Part One - Part Two tankcupcakes masterlist
March, 2017 Lebanon, Kansas
She stopped mid sentence, a shocked look on her face as something flooded her memory. She reached over and gripped his shoulder tightly. "Dean. I have to tell you something." He smirked, knowing this was coming. He chuckled. "Yeah? Well, sweetheart, I've got something to tell you too."
“Wow,” Eve whispered, leaning back in her seat as Dean finished the story of how he met JD.
“I know,” he replied. “Sam said he's alone right now, but like I said, JD has been staying with us, so he'll be there later." "What's he like?" she asked softly. Dean chuckled, a smirk creeping on his face. "Me," he replied simply. “You.”
"Really?" "Yeah, he's a lot like us," he answered, nodding. "I'm sure he'll tell you all about it himself, but he grew up with your aunt, Penny - she took him overseas, they lived in Scotland." "Wow," she said again, breathlessly. "It's beautiful there - Penny always wanted to go." "She loved him," Dean said, looking over at her. "He had a good life, she took care of him." She nodded, and was quiet for a moment. "I'm so sorry, Dean - I didn't know what to do -" He was already shaking his head as he reached over and squeezed her knee. "Don't apologize, there's nothing you could've done. And you had enough on your plate." Eve blinked back tears, nodding and he glanced over at her. "I wish you hadn't had to go through all of that alone." "I'm sorry I didn't say goodbye," she whispered. "You did," he answered softly. "Like a coward, in a letter," she muttered. "Fine, then I'm sorry I didn't let you say goodbye." "I understood," he said, but he felt his throat get tight as he spoke. And he did understand, but that hadn't taken away the pain. "I won't pretend it didn't sting," he continued, stealing another glance at her, "but I forgive you." "Thank you," she said, reaching out to run her hand down the back of his neck, before folding both arms across her stomach. One knee bounced up and down rapidly. "He's gonna love you," Dean said, eyes on the road. "It's impossible not to." She smiled softly but said nothing as she gazed out of the window again. Shortly after, they arrived at the bunker, Dean parking the Impala in the garage before they entered through the front. "Hey, Sammy," Dean said as he stepped through the door of the bunker, Eve right behind. "Hey," Sam called up from the large table in the war room. He was staring intently at his laptop screen and didn't look over. "Where is everyone?" Dean asked, heading down the steps, gesturing for Eve to hold the bannister. "I'm not sure," he replied absently. "Cas and JD went to meet Crowley somewhere." His eyes were still glued to his computer screen. "You know when they'll be back?" Dean questioned as they reached the lower floor. Sam shook his head, but didn't answer this time. "Good lord, Sam - don't be so rude, look at your brother when he's talking to you," Eve said with a playful grin and Sam's head snapped up at the sound of her voice. "Oh my god..." he gasped out, pushing his chair back from the table as he stood. "How did... what-what are you... how?” "We don't know," Dean said, shaking his head, trying and failing to stop the smile at Sam's reaction. "And it's really her?" Sam asked cautiously, standing but still rooted in his spot. "Far as I can tell," Dean replied. "Did all the typical tests on her." "Get over here," Sam said, motioning to her as he also stepped closer, wrapping her into a bear hug. Tears were filling her eyes again as she clutched Sam tightly. "It's so good to see you," she whispered. As she pulled back, she smiled up at him, fixing the collar on his shirt. "I'm sure we have a lot to catch up on." "Yeah, we do... I - I can't believe you're here," he said, a dumbstruck tone in his voice that matched his expression. "Did Chuck do this?" he asked, looking over at Dean. "I don't know," he replied, shaking his head. "I have no clue what's going on." "Chuck?" Eve asked, cocking her head. "God," Dean explained simply, as though any of this was normal. "Oh," she replied with raised eyebrows as she nodded. "Sure." Sam laughed and gestured to the table, pulling a chair out for her. "Can I get you anything? You hungry?" She smiled and squeezed his arm before taking the seat he'd offered. "Water would be nice - thank you, Sam." Sam nodded and disappeared, Dean taking a seat adjacent to Eve at the table.
He stared at her, goosebumps rushing over his skin as it seemed to finally dawn on him that this was real - she was sitting next to him, looking every bit like he remembered.
She locked eyes with him and the shock must have been evident on his face, because she chuckled.
"I know," she said quietly, a smile spreading across her lips. "This is crazy." He didn't say anything as he reached across the table to grab her hand.
Sam came back with her water before retaking his seat, a look of pleased disbelief still on his face. Suddenly, he sat up straighter and turned to Dean. "JD," he blurted and Dean nodded. "Yeah. You know, Sammy, if we can handle meeting our mother who is younger than us, then so can JD." Sam nodded slowly and Eve smirked at Dean, causing him to laugh. "I know, I heard it too - this family is so fucked up." She laughed too and shook her head. "Never a dull moment with you two, huh?" They sat together for a little while longer before Dean showed Eve around the bunker, ending the tour at an empty bedroom near his own. "Home sweet home," he said as she looked around it with a smile. He pointed to a small love seat in the corner. "Probably not as comfortable as a heaven couch, but it's something." She chuckled and shook her head. "It's great. Thank you for letting me stay here." "Well, I wanted to leave you out in the woods, but Sam insisted, so..." She snorted and laughed again. "Yeah, well, I'll thank him too." As Dean opened the door of the bedroom to exit, he could hear several male voices talking and he snapped it shut again. "JD is here," he explained to a confused Eve. "Listen, before you meet him, I wanted to prepare you... I know I told you already, but let me reiterate: he looks very, very similar to me." She raised an eyebrow and swallowed nervously. "How similar?" "Very, very," he repeated with even more emphasis. "Trust me when I tell you this is the weirdest experience you will ever have." "Lord," she muttered and then took a deep breath. "Okay. Let's do this." He smiled and gave her a wink, opening the door again with one hand and grabbing one of hers with the other. Dean led the way down the hall and back into the war room where the voices were coming from. Sam was seated at the table again, Crowley at the other end of it, his feet haphazardly propped on the table top. Castiel stood near them, facing the hall and his eyes widened as he saw Eve enter the room.
Dean didn't see JD, but had heard him a moment ago, so he knew he was there somewhere.
"Evelyn," Cas said, his voice surprised as he stepped toward her. "What happened?" Crowley's feet hit the ground with a heavy thud as he heard her name and he was standing within seconds. "Not the Evelyn?" Eve looked nervously up at Dean, who gave her a disarming shake of the head, a sign not to worry, as he squeezed her hand. Cas ignored Crowley, his head tilted slightly as he studied Eve. "May I?" he asked as he extended a hand toward her. She nodded and he gently pressed two fingers against her temple, both of their eyes closing.
After a short moment, both sets opened again, Castiel's brows furrowed even further than before. "I don't understand."
"Neither do I," she answered quietly. "You seem fine. Healthy. Normal," he replied. "Any idea how she got here?" Sam asked as he rose from the table. "None," Cas said, looking over at him. Crowley now stood in front of Eve, and he reached for her hand. Hesitating briefly, she released Dean's hand to take Crowley's, who simply shook it before letting go. "Hello, darling," Crowley said softly, a smile on his face as he crossed his arms and looked her over. "Every bit as lovely as I imagined." "Thank you," Eve said uncertainly, glancing from Crowley to Dean and back again. "Pleased to meet you." "And a proper southern bell - Dean, I'm surprised at you." Dean gave Crowley a bored look but did not respond. "I'm Crowley," he said. "Apparently I'm the only gentleman in this room, seeing as no one introduced us." "The only 'gentleman' and the king of Hell," Sam added bitterly. "Oh yes, I suppose that is my proper title," Crowley told her with a wink. Eve's eyes widened slightly and she nodded but didn't reply. Dean laced his fingers through hers again, the nervousness practically radiating off of her. "Our relationship with Crowley is complicated, but necessary." "I get all tingly when you talk about our 'relationship', Dean," Crowley said, giving him a suggestive eyebrow raise. "Not to worry, love," he said, turning to Eve. "I don't mean you any harm." She nodded again, and Dean had a sneaking suspicion she didn't trust her voice at the moment. "Hey hey, Dean!" JD's voice boomed from the balcony. "I didn't know you were back!" Everyone on the lower floor looked up at the sound of his voice and Dean watched him as he scanned the group, color draining from his face as his eyes landed on Eve. It was that same moment that Eve's grip on Dean's hand tightened considerably. "Oh my god," she hissed, inhaling sharply. "Oh my god, Dean - he looks just like you, look at him!" She held her free hand to her chest. "This is..." "Eve?" JD whispered, his hands holding a white knuckle grasp on the railing in front of him. He stumbled forward on unsteady legs and made his way quickly down the stairs. Dean felt her trembling hand leave his as she took a few steps forward and met him at the bottom of the stairs. Neither of them said anything as they stared at each other and Dean held his breath, silence settling over all of them. Eve took a shaky breath as she reached out to touch his hand, and with that, JD suddenly moved to wrap his arms tightly around her. A quiet sob escaped her as she hugged him back, and Dean let out an exhale. "Why don't we give them a minute?" he suggested softly, gesturing to the next room. The four men all dispersed to separate rooms, but Dean had chosen a seat near Eve and JD, eager to watch their reunion without disturbing them.
“You are exactly like I remember you,” JD voice was coming out barely a whisper. “I told Dean that it was impossible, but…”
“Well, you are nothing like I remember,” she replied with a laugh, hesitating briefly as she put both hands on his face. “I can't believe how much you look like him… Did you about have a heart attack when you met him?”
JD chuckled and nodded his head. “Thought I was having a grade A acid trip, if I'm being honest with ya.” She laughed again and he grinned sheepishly. “Probably shouldn't say stuff like that to my mum, should I?”
She shrugged. “Eh, to hell with it - you're a grown ass man and nothing about this is going to be normal.”
He laughed loudly and then fell silent as he studied her face. “I'm sorry for staring,” he said after a moment. “This is…”
“I know,” she replied, squeezing his shoulder. “Come on, let's grab a seat - I want you to tell me everything about yourself.”
Dean smirked as he got up from his chair, truly excusing himself from the area.
The clock on the wall said it was after 1 AM and Dean lay in the dark, wide awake.
After the shock and happiness of seeing Eve had worn off, and he was left to his own devices, he had begun to stew in his thoughts. The fire in his heart had never stopped burning for her, but now that she was here… So many things had changed.
There was a soft knocking on his door and he looked over at it. “S’open,” he said.
It clicked open and he sat up when he saw Eve standing on the other side, lit only by some background glow coming from the hallway - dressed in his t-shirt and sweatpants that he'd left on her bed earlier that evening. “Hey, you alright?”
She nodded. “Is it okay if I stay in here tonight?” she asked quietly.
“Yeah,” he said immediately, scooting over to make room on the bed.
She closed the door behind her and crawled into the spot he'd made for her, rolling to stare at the ceiling.
It was all so foreign and so familiar at the same time, lying next to her.
Before he could stop himself, his arm moved almost involuntarily to slide under her shoulders, pulling her closer until she rested her head in the crook of his neck.
He felt her tense body relax, and he listened to her even breathing as they lay silently together for several minutes.
“I'm afraid I'm going to wake up and this won't be real,” she whispered.
He said nothing, though part of him feared the same. Instead, he held her tighter and planted a kiss on top of her head, waiting for her to fall asleep before allowing himself to drift off too.
A/N 2: Just in case anyone was curious or interested, made a little JD edit
