Note
I will say that Daisy named her kittens before joining the Clans, so Mousewhisker arrived as Mouse before they just slapped a -kit on him and called it a day.
A different situation just happened now where Fernstripe of Windclan joined Thunderclan and Fernsong is still kicking. The same as that situation happened back in TPB where Graystripe joined Riverclan while Graypool was right there.
Cats who dance on the edge of this are a bunch of Riverclan cats: Mossyfoot and Mosspelt were both alive in OotS, and more recently Mistystar and Mistpaw were both alive at the same time. Not quite the same, but enough to be confusing.
Also in AVOS, there were two Mintfurs kicking around at the same time; Mintfur daughter of Petalnose of Skyclan, and Mintfur the conspicuously absent probably-mate of Icewing. If Robinwing of Windclan existed beyond the allegiances of Dawn, she might've been able to meet Robinwing of Riverclan an arc or two later.
I'll start over lol, legacy naming can be fine if done well but i don't think it has. Hollytuft + Sibs appeared to us as adults so we don't get to know about them. Cinderheart was cute until we had the whole "shes actually cinderpelt lmao" moment. The two Mouses and Leafs just had no excuse to be there. And if I was Ivypool and my kid died I would NOT want some random cat immediately naming their daughter after her. Isn't that kind of traumatizing? I got rid of all legacy namings that occur -
in cats younger than Holly in my AVOS/TBC allegiances and in my rewriting exercise I'm making Sparkpaw just be really obsessed with being Firestar's kin so her eventual naming of Flamekit makes a bit more sense. At least I can excuse 4 Robinwings to the Erin's forgetting they all existing(not a valid excuse tho imo), having two Frecklewishes is just insane. Was literally nothing else an option? Frecklesong, Freckletuft, Frecklemint? I've also noticed stuff from the beginning like having a semi - prominent Ashfur in Into The Wild's ShadowClan then immediately having Ashkit/(fur) in Fire and Ice's ThunderClan. At the very least, literary-wise, it feels like too much repeating too quickly. I'm not against two Bobs existing at the same time but still…I've actually put down a good fic because they named literally everyone in TC after a dead cat and I got annoyed lol. Names were like, Ferndust Bluestorm Frostheart etc
TV Tropes has a trope relevant to this: One-Steve Limit. While it's very common for people to share names in the real world, in fiction it's avoided to make things easier on your readers/viewers and prevent repetitiveness. The point of not sharing names is for each character to stand out on their own; often when there are multiples of one name (for example, Heather in "Heathers"), there's a reason to it, usually to mock the hivemind-nature of the characters or establish a theme of putting people in boxes they can't escape from (such as in Steven Universe where every gem of one type shares the same name and remains stuck in one role for their entire existence).
In the case of Warriors, I feel that "rule" rings truest. To be entirely fair to the writers, they have hundreds of characters to name, most of them never even showing up in the books beyond being mentioned in the allegiances. A prefix or suffix is going to appear multiple times - that's just unavoidable, especially if you have rules in place for what names are allowed that limits your options. I can't blame them for that issue coming up a few times accidentally.
What I can blame them for is deliberately using names that have important characters attached to them barely a generation later. In a setting where you have to keep track of every name, even as a reader, it's going to cause nothing but trouble if Greystripe dies and in the next book there's a Greykit in the very same Clan. It creates a constant stream of Grey-, which can accidentally confuse readers, or at the very least trip them up for a few seconds - something you DO NOT want in a story, especially one aimed at kids, where things need to be clear and concise.
#shoutout to the da user i followed back in the day that had six cats named silver- spread out between four 50-cat clans#it was... certainly something#fr three names were used twice#nettleclaw and silverfeather and ivystripe#black and spotted were used five times#dark snow oak tawny and mouse were used four times#and 65% of the clan cats shared a name with another cat in the clans#and 42% of the cats who share a name with another cat do so with a cat from their own clan#there were *three cats named leaf- in one clan*#that so far is the most egregious example of repeating prefixes ive ever seen in a fan-thing#and to clarify#these ocs were all contemporaries of one another#they were like the starting allegiances for a story thatd take a few years in-universe#i am both massively relieved and morbidly intrigued by what wouldve happened if skyclan was added#would silver- be given to a seventh cat? would oak- get a fifth bearer? its more likely than youd think#anyway#reblog#redux-iterum

Moon 280-Greenleaf
Instead of processing her grief, Creekstar (134) has decided to spend time with the middle-ranked warriors. She makes sure to share prey with her son and tells a joke to Greenrapid (36) that makes her laugh. Bluestripe (55) is still not a fan of Creekstar. She thinks the leader is very stuck up and rude. In the wake of tragedy, Hatchswipe (25) and Kestrelcreek (69) have become the best of friends. Kestrelcreek really appreciates how helpful Hatchswipe is around camp. She always seems to be busy doing something! Almondback (51) decides to take Kestrelcreek on a nice date and surprises her with a pretty wind show. She’s a little perplexed, but appreciates the gesture. Whorlstorm (25) is not doing as well in the Clan as her sister is. She doesn’t get along with Sweet Marmalade (65), her adoptive father, and thinks that Cavecatcher (38) never does anything. Whorlstorm does like Nettlestripe (49), though, and goes on a nice long walk with him. The newcomer to the Clan, Sofanthiel (69), is surprised to hear about all the hardships that Whorlstorm has been through recently. She’s a little worried to learn that Clan life isn’t as easy as she thought it was. She also wants to get to know Nettlestripe better. The Clan also welcomes another new member. Nettlestripe and Cavecatcher find an injured former loner by the thunderpath and bring him back to the Clan. His name is Alderflight (36) and he’s powerless.
Healer’s den: Alderflight (head damage), Creekstar (grief stricken), Dawnfreckle (grief stricken), Whorlstorm (stomacheache)
Meta: I actually added 15 moons to Alderflight’s in-game age. He has a cute romance with a cat later on, but, at his original age, he would have been younger than that cat's kits. So, I aged him up. Problem solved.

History of VineClan
Please don’t steal this idea! I’ve been working on it for more than 4 days!
I’ve left this in my inbox for bit trying to understand what you meant by steal your idea. Im assuming you still want me to post this publicly, since you submitted it to me, but in future if you are afraid of someone stealing ideas perhaps maybe you can send a personal message and we can talk things through and discuss your ideas privately! Im always open to dms.
Formation- Vine was a loner who ran away from his father and then met a small group of cats who needed guidance and became their leader and taking them to the Trees of Time.
Many moons ago, BadgerClan, ShadeClan, the lost clan, SunClan, and the other clans, SnakeClan and StreamClan were dead. But now a new dawn is rising.
Thats quite a start, a new clan rising from the ashes of the old ones! Do the current day cats know much of the clans? Or are they basically starting over from scratch?
Rivals- After Vine and his group left the Woods of Water, another group, the Rogues of Roaming moved in and injured one of Vine’s best friends, Blue.
There was almost a war but Blue stopped it. The area is now known as the Roaming Rainfalls.
Always good to have some rivals. Do the rogues become their own clan as well?
Age- VineClan is old. Vinestar and Bluestar are remembered and celebrated every 12 moons
Old is... not quite a helpful descriptor. Perhaps a better way to indicate the age of a clan is through how many leaders have reigned, and for how long, or how many generations have passed.
Shaping Events- The elders told the story of how Blue stopped the war and the tales of the lost clans are less told than the founding of the clans which is very often. The bold and faithful BadgerClan, the tricky yet helpful ShadeClan, the sharp and qualified once missed SunClan, the passionate and quick SnakeClan and the kind and courageous, water-loving StreamClan
Okay so I see here that some stories of the old clans still survive, but there is still a lot of info you could expand on the old clans and the current association with Vineclan. How does Vineclan see themselves? Are they still the only clan now?
Heroes and Villians: All the living peaceful medicine cats, warriots and kits want to be like Bluestar and all the battle-hungry warriors and kits want to be like Rainstar. The villains are the Rogues of Roaming and VineClan’s greatest enemy.
Each side has the Hall of Fame.
There’s the Hall of Heroes and the Hall of Villians.
I’m glad to know you are thinking of some of them, I would love to hear the stories of your favorites!
Territory
VineClan’s territory Slope Woods by Day Twowalkers and the Twilight Twowalkers. Fires always come in the greenleaf and floods in leaffall every 48 moons. In those times, they go live in the Fire’s Flood Field (A Shelter Place). Some common animals are bugs, frogs, snakes, lizards, chipmunks, or squirrels. There may be foxes, raccoons, or porcupines as well. Look up in the trees, and you may see birds or bats.
Sounds like standard North America, although choosing a specific region might help you come up with details especially for some fun unique names.
On RainClan’s territory there is Training Valley, The Hunting Hills, the best place for hunting, Harmony Hills, every moon there is a truce where cats can talk and have fun and they share news and advice. The medicine cats go to the Star Cave with the Moon Crystal. Cats who are not medicine cats go to the Star Hollow and meet their ancestors with the Lightstone. It only works in the daytime.
Ah okay I see here that there is a second clan. There is also a lot of information to unpack in this paragraph. I do like that there are different ways to interact with your ancestors and that your average clan cat can still commune with Starclan, and the Day/night motif of spiritual connection here as well.
Camp
The camp is hidden in the slopes. Climb up it and you hop in it. It is guarded throughout the day. Over there is the nursery, the biggest den, the one with the huge sand wall. Cats have to leap over it just to get in. Only VineClan cats have that kind of strength and speed for that. The other smaller sand den goes into an underground cave where the apprentices sleep. Scouts sleep on top of the slope or the trees. Guards sleep in a pile of sand with there breathing devices called Sand Breathers so they can sleep and breathe easily. Hunters sleep underneath a pile of prey, so they always get first pick. That big pile of sand and leaves with a small sand wall. The Sand Gem is where the leader gives meetings and the leader glows whenever they sit on it. On top of the gem is where the leader sleeps with the rest of his family. The medicine cats sleep underground. There are two types of herbs, Sand Herbs, that can be kept underground, mostly for wounds and diseases. Sky Herbs are plants that are supposed to be kept outside, in the Green Den that’s open but protected with a bright surface that you can see through it. Poison Plants are spread out all over in the Roaming Rainfalls and the darkest, deepest corners of the Slope Woods.
I see a lot of interesting concepts here! I am fascinated by the implication that these cats have some form of technology or magic, to create the Sand Breathers and the hard clear surface (glass?) protecting the Green Den. I would love to hear more about those aspects, since technology and magic are things I tend to enjoy. As for the hunters sleeping under prey, that sounds a bit uncomfortable, I certainly wouldnt like to sleep under a pile of carcasses which might bleed or be dirty or stinky. So why did they choose to do that? Are they afraid their clanmates will steal their food?
Build: Cats that were born from Guards have a remarkable amount of strength. Cats who are born from Scouts have an unbelievable amount of speed, an average amount of both is how they become a Hunter and anyone who was born from a certain rank (Hunter, Guard, Scout) always is born with that ancestry.
I see you have gone for a more Tribe-like divisions of skills and build. If you have a certain build are you basically destined to be in that position, or can cats choose?
Pelt: Black cats are considered lucky and white cats with any other eye color than blue are considered unlucky. Any cat with a white pelt and blue eyes is not blind but very powerful and will be automatically chosen for deputy and given 12 lives if they’re evil and want war, 15 lives if they’re average and like a regular leader, 18 lives if they want everlasting peace and is good and kind.
I dont quite understand this. When white kittens with blue eyes are born, are they basically destined to be leader? What happens if there are two in the same clan at the same time? What is the significance of the number of lives? How does the clan or even Starclan itself decide how many lives to give them? Can they read their minds and intentions? Whats to stop a cat who says they want peace from getting those extra lives and then causing chaos? How does living that long affect those cats, or do they die of old age? While this is an interesting concept in theory, you might want to think this through a bit more, you dont have to discard it completely, but you do have to consider the ramifications and consequences.
Clan Roles-
Leader
The leader is voted for every 48 moons and if they are a white cat with blue eyes, there is no vote needed. If they are a white cat with blue eyes that’s good, they get to be leader for 144 moons. If they are voted again, it’s 96 moons.
Ah some more info, but still very confusing. If leaders are voted for every four years (48 moons) normally, what happens to leaders who havent lost their nine lives by that point? Do all leaders (other than white cats with blue eyes) get regular nine lives? Why do white cats get to be leaders for so long, and do their extra lives sustain their bodies that long? Are you saying a white cat with blue eyes could live and rule for 238 moons (almost 20 years, 144+96 moons)?
Deputy
The deputy is the leader’s Vice President and is chosen by the leader.
Medicine Cat
They follow the Code of the Stars. An apprentice is chosen with a trial. A trial starts at 5 moons. There are two tests: Intelligence and Heart. Intelligence shows how much you know. Heart shows how much you’re into it.
In order for kittens to pass this trial, are they all taught basic information and knowledge about herbs? What qualifies a cat to be chosen as medicine cat apprentice?
Elders
The elder’s average age is 65 moons. The oldest elder is The Protector of the Knowledge, the second oldest elder is Head Elder and reminds elders of their duties like their Daily Walk guarded by 1 Scout and 2 Guards and their Ceremony Seats and the Head Elder is like the deputy’s assistant who helps with everything and The Protector of Knowledge tells knowledge whenever needed.
I feel like I am missing a lot of info here, that there is a lot more to dive into. Its really nice to see Elders having their own positions and duties though at least!
Warriors
There are Hunters, Guards, and Scouts. Hunters are average, Guards are strong and Scouts are quick.
Okay, well Im not sure why Hunters are considered average, since that sounds a bit demoralizing, but I suppose that if the Guards and Scouts are elite warriors it might make more sense.
Queens
The Kitter is the cat who has been in the nursery for the most and assigns Kitsitters who take care of the kits after the age of 4 moons and stop at the age of 9 moons when a kit moves out of the nursery and into the apprentice den, so the queens can go back to their original role. The Kitsitters are mostly former queens or their fathers. The Protector of Knowledge mostly takes on an apprentice and there are called The Apprentice of Knowledge and they teach the 6-9 moons, the Way of the Warrior.
I see your cats are considered kits for longer than canon. Are these intermediate moons kind of like school? Why are medicine cat apprentices chosen so young before their schooling even begins?
Apprentices
They are apprenticed to 15 moons. The Protector of Knowledge mostly takes on an apprentice and there are called The Apprentice of Knowledge and they teach the 6-9 moons, the Way of the Warrior. The requirements to become a hunter is to hunt the most prey from sunup to sundown. Guards have to fight each other and the Top 3 becomes a guard. Cats who have failed have to take the test next moon and if they fail till they’re 18, they become a hunter. Scouts go into a race and the Top 3 becomes a scout and the 4th, 5th and 6th placers become Trial Scouts and if they fail their mission, they become hunters.
So I notice that there are two different ways to become a hunter, but they seem a bit contradictory. You mention that to become a hunter you need to hunt the most prey. Does that mean only one becomes a hunter? Or is there an amount each cat needs to hunt to pass their trial? And failed scouts still automatically become hunters without having to pass the same trial as regular hunters?
Kits
Kits are raised by their mothers from the age of 1-3 and their Kitsitters from the age of 4-9
Code of Conduct
The regular warrior code.
Laws
Punishment is placed in front of the StarClan Court and if it was minor it’s mostly cleaning out the elder’s den. Middle is suspension. Major is mostly banishment.
Mates
There is a ceremony for mates who want to be together forever.
Leader: Welcome, cats of VineClan who have wanted to be with (male cat) (rank) and (female cat)(rank) and today: we thank you for being here to share this extraordinary day. You may sit. Now, (male cat) do you, of your own free will, take (female cat) as your StarClan watched mate, to cherish and defend—as long as you both shall live?
Male Cat: I do.
Leader: (Female cat) do you, of your own free will, take (make cat) as your StarClan watched mate, to cherish and defend—as long as you both shall live?
Female Cat: I do.
Leader: With the promises you have made and with the power invested in me with all of StarClan watching, I now pronounce you mates for life. You may touch noses the bride.
(They touch noses and some purring may be made and that’s when the kits and apprentices leave.)
I see you have drawn heavily on modern human marriage ceremonies for your mateship ritual! But are there provisions if the cats break up? Or marriages where the cats aren’t strictly male and female?
All the other ceremonies are the same. Here’s two new ones.
The Protector of Knowledge Ceremony
Leader: You are the oldest cat (name of cat) and hereby should be known as The Protector of Knowledge for as long as you live.
Head Elder Ceremony
Leader: You see the second oldest cat (name of cat) and have proven your loyalty many times over and you are hereby known as Head Elder until the Protector of Knowledge hands over his/her power to you.
Naming: The kits are named after whatever the queens want their names to be.
Afterlife: Cats can go into whatever age they want too in the afterlife and there’s plenty of prey and instead of a dark slope there’s a light sunny field.
Thank you for sharing about your clans! I think there are a few things you might need to expand on and think through, if you would like we can chat in private as well if you are worried!

Dawnstar (Lionheart, Lionpaw, Lionkit)
Age (in moons)**: 65 moons Clan: Lakeclan Rank: Leader Mate: N/A Apprentice: Minnowstream [Aquata] (past apprentice) Skills: Fighting, mediating, swimming
Beliefs: To the clan, Dawnstar has always been a firm believer in Starclan and its teachings. He is known to settle arguments by citing the teachings of their ancestors and can be found on many late nights, looking at the reflection of the stars in the lake. However, on the inside, Dawnstar is beginning to doubt Starclan. After all, why would all that has happened happen if Lakeclan had the favour of Starclan? His doubts scare him and he feels trapped, with no one to share these thoughts with for fear of being ousted as leader and destabilizing his clan further.
Appearance: Dawnstar is a tough, barrel-chested orange tabby with no white markings, except a small amount under his chin. He has warm deep golden eyes, short ears, a thick tail, and large paws. He has a scar on his shoulder from a battle in his youth with some of Darkclan.
Story so far…:
**tw drowning, car accident, cat death**
From the moment that Lionkit opened his eyes, he was ferocious. Or, well, he wanted to be. Chasing beetles in the nursery, pouncing on his mother…It was a good thing he was so strong, because the year he was born, the lake flooded over its boundaries and destroyed the nurseries, drowning his two sisters.
This tragedy allowed Oakstar, Lionkit’s father, to rise to power. He moved the encampment onto higher ground, in the shade of the big trees along the shore. Well-beloved, Oakstar took Lionpaw on as his apprentice when the young kit became of age. Lionpaw and Oakstar were inseparable, and everyone knew that one day, Lionpaw would rise to become leader. Handsome, kind, and deeply faithful, Lionpaw was very popular in his youth, if not a little clumsy with his want to be a brave, true warrior.
As an older apprentice about to graduate to warrior, Lionpaw got in a skirmish with Darkclan on their borders resulting in a deep wound and scar on his left shoulder. Due to this, Oakstar withheld his graduation and Lionheart did not earn his warrior name for another six moons. In this time, he reevaluated his priorities and emerged a loyal, responsible young warrior. Eventually, his father graduated him to deputy, where he stayed comfortably, knowing that his father’s nine lives would protect him.
Then, his father lost one of his nine lives fighting to keep their territory from Darkclan. They lost and suffered heavy injuries. Oakheart consulted their med cat, Shadowpool, who told them that good tidings would be coming soon.
Then, about twelve moons ago, two legs started pushing into Lakeclan’s territory from the other side. Oakstar and Lionheart went to investigate and Oakstar was killed by a Monster. Reluctantly, Dawnstar rose from his clan’s darkest moments to try to be a guiding light. His first order of business was to banish Shadowpool, who had not warned them of the two legs’ arrival.
They took back their land from Darkclan and now they are doing their best to maintain their borders while enemies close in from all sides and their leader’s faith is slipping…
Realistically, how much time will you be able to commit to this role?
I live here. I may be busy some on Saturday during the day and Sunday during the day, but will have my phone on me for questions.
How did you become the leader? Describe the issues and political standings that you have faced and overcome. Also, describe the general feeling of the clan towards your leadership.
I already kind of described this in the bio? Basically, he was groomed to be leader by his father, who the clan respected and loved. Some may have thought him young and foolish in his youth, but he has proved himself by reclaiming their territory. Others may think that his decision to remove Shadowpool was not right.
His main issues is just maintaining their territory and keeping the cats safe from two legs. He has made a very clear ban on associating with any kittypets.
What are your concerns for your clan to bring forward at the Gathering?
That our territory is not being respected and that due to the two legs’ encroaching encampment, he is going to be requesting Forestclan to share their territory. Additionally, he will be asking for Forestclan and Stoneclan’s help to push back Darkclan. He will be willing to strike deals and negotiate with them to do so. He thinks that Darkclan’s doctrine is dangerous and threatens all of the clans. Due to his own shaky faith, he will be even more firm in scolding Darkclan for their flouting of Starclan.
How will you make your plan of action?
Meet with leaders from the other clans. Send delegations to Forestclan and Stoneclan before the Gathering, so that they can provide a united front against Darkclan. Tighten border patrols between Darkclan and Lakeclan.

Episode 65: Onion Friend
“Good things the kids are keeping themselves busy.”
It’s been exactly fifty episodes since Onion Trade, and it’ll be another forty-five until Onion Gang. Awfulness of the latter episode aside, this seems like pretty good pacing for a character as beautifully bizarre as Onion to get the spotlight.
Steven is largely kept out of the Gems' story throughout the Week of Sardonyx, and that’s never made more explicit than in his romp with Onion. Amethyst’s voice during dinner is drowned out by Steven’s fascination and revulsion with Beach City’s weirdest weirdo, and the episode revolves around Steven putting up with him for Amethyst’s sake. We don’t even see Pearl or Garnet, but we don’t have to: Onion Trade is all about Steven’s separation from the grown-up’s table.
Let’s start with his story before we get into the meat of the Week of Sardonyx implications. His main function, as per usual when he’s paired with Onion, is to serve as the straight man. In true sequel fashion, Onion’s absurd creepiness from Onion Trade gets ramped up: right off the bat he’s hiding in Steven’s cupboard to steal his food (as the latter narrates his own actions to nobody, because this is a silly episode from the start). Even if we learn he didn’t paint them, it’s honestly not even surprising to find portraits of Amethyst in his garage, because it’s hard to be surprised by anything he does.
After a relatively tame dinner scene—Onion is probably too old to be messing with his food, even if his age is hard to pin down, but this is still normal kid behavior to an extent—we reach the nightmare that is his room. We still get a nice blend of regular weird and creepy weird, aided by Zach Callison’s fantastic portrayal of bewilderment. He’s just so confused about Onion bounding on his bed instead of a trampoline, and even if this is hardly the strangest thing about this environment, I love that Steven’s still upset by it.
But like Charlie Brown with the football, Steven keeps up hope. He somehow sees no reason to be suspicious about Onion’s mouse or video tape, which makes their inevitable twists hilarious and super gross. So of course, when he finally decides enough is enough (featuring Callison’s best-ever use of the word “okay”), Onion decides to perform his first unambiguously kind action. Does he do it just to subvert Steven’s expectations? Or does he also consider sharing his snake and birth video “kind”? Even if he could talk beyond Callison mumbling, I doubt we’d ever know. But throwing a wrench into his actions by giving him a moment of true friendship is a great way to keep Onion unpredictable.
While it lacks the narrative oomph of Garnet being revealed as a fusion in Jailbreak, this episode gives a similar sense of satisfaction as all the implications about Clan Onion are confirmed. At first, the only hint that he and Sour Cream are related is the pun we get when combining their names, but more clues start piling up as we start to get a sense of their family. We know the unnamed fisherman who speaks gibberish is Onion’s dad from Onion Trade. We learn in Joy Ride that Sour Cream’s stepdad is a fisherman who speaks gibberish. We meet Vidalia (a type of onion) with Marty (who looks an awful lot like Sour Cream) suspiciously leaving Greg’s van in Story for Steven’s flashback. With this knowledge, we can shape an image of a family featuring Vidalia and the fisherman as parents and Sour Cream and Onion as half-siblings, but it’s never stated outright until Onion Friend. It’s not really a twist, as all the information (save the fisherman’s name, which we learn here is Yellowtail) was already there, but it still allows for that gleeful “I knew it!” moment.
Vidalia is the fifth mother we’ve met on Steven Universe, but only the second we’ve seen interact with her child-aged child (Nanefua’s kid is a grown man, Rose is only accessible by videotape, and Barb was on the job). Vidalia is the polar opposite of Dr. Maheswaran: a chill artist with free range kids and a shotgun in the house. We don’t even know her last name, just as we don’t know Dr. Maheswaran’s first name (although Ian Jones-Quartey says it’s Priyanka). They both love their kids, but where one expresses it through strict control, the other does so with wild freedom.
While neither style is strictly superior—compare and contrast Onion and Connie on your own time—I’m thrilled that the show’s desire to portray different types of mothers extends beyond the Crystal Gems. “Moms are people too” is a refreshing stance to take in a medium where mothers are often the portrayed as the most grounded (read: boring) member of the family.
One thing I find fascinating is that both of these mothers are voiced by women who have worked extensively behind the scenes in animation beyond voice acting. Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (who also played Major Motoko in Ghost in the Shell) is a veteran anime voice director, starting with a bang with the legendary English dub of Cowboy Bebop. And Jackie Buscarino (who also played Pacifica Northwest in Gravity Falls) worked her way from production assistant on shows like Spongebob Squarepants and Dexter’s Laboratory to full producer on shows like…well, like Steven Universe.
There’s nothing wrong with actors who are just actors, but even if it’s just a coincidence, I love that some part of the casting crew went for known industry multitaskers to play family matriarchs. Because yeah, no disrespect to Yellowtail and Doug, but Vidalia and Dr. Maheswaran are obviously running their respective houses.
(If Buscarino wasn’t so great at portraying Vidalia, I would’ve killed to have Wendy Hoopes in the role, because I’m pretty sure Vidalia is who Jane Lane grows up to be.)
As important as it is to see Vidalia as a mom, this episode is also about seeing parents as people outside of that context, which is why Onion and Steven are shooed out for Amethyst and Vidalia to talk. There’s a risk in making an episode about Amethyst talking about her troubles that features only a moment of eavesdropping, but this is another benefit of the Week of Sardonyx’s structure. We know why Amethyst is upset. We hear just enough to know how she’s dealing with it, and how valuable Vidalia’s friendship is. And we know how freaked out Steven is by Onion, making his quiet decision to return to his room surprisingly touching. Surprising not because it’s in any way out of character for him, but because this is otherwise a really goofy episode.
Subtlety is also used to shed a new light on Amethyst’s backstory. She’s always been the Gem most interested in humans (outside of Rose), attracted to human things like food and stuff and pop culture. She uses human slang and wrestles with humans and has that sisterly bond with Steven that makes the two feel like close peers instead of a parent and child. While we know she was fascinated with Greg and hung out with him alone, it’s awesome to see more of how he indirectly affected her forays into the human world.
There’s no indication from the two seconds we get of Vidalia in Story for Steven that she and Amethyst would be best buds, but they’re both punky and rebellious and we see so much of how they would’ve gotten along in their photo montage. Vidalia styles Amethyst’s hair to look like Rose’s. Amethyst morphs into Marty so they can make fun of him. It’s kind of amazing how quickly we’re able to accept that these two utterly nonintersecting characters have a history that informs Amethyst’s behavior to this day.
We sadly don’t see much of these two hanging out after this, but we don’t see Purple Puma and Tiger Millionaire wrestling between Tiger Millionaire and Tiger Philanthropist either, and are led to believe they’ve been regularly fighting the entire time. In that sense, I’ll just assume these two are getting into all sorts of trouble when Steven’s not around. Slippers included.
Future Vision!
This is our first look at Sour Cream’s weird backstory with the Crystal Gems, as Amethyst remembers hanging out with him as a baby. We’ll see more in Greg the Babysitter, but Sour Cream has a unexpectedly major role in Steven’s existence and it’s cool to see that referenced so early.
We’re the one, we’re the ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR!
Despite the angst behind the scenes, Onion Friend is at its core a comedy showcase. It’s a little too forgettable compared to more well-rounded outings, and not quite funny enough to sit with the bigger comedies, but I’m still a big fan.
