Bandai V-Pet Crossovers Part 2 (see Part 1 here)

With Tamagotchi's original launch in 1996, then Digital Monsters in 1997, Bandai and Wiz released Magical Witches in 1998!
While Tamagotchi were based on eggs, and Digital Monsters on cages, the Magical Witches v-pet is shaped like a book, cover and all!
Just like the original lines of Tamagotchi and Digimon, Kenji Watanabe was also the designer for the Magical Witches. Besides going through different stages, the Witches were also divided into four different clans each representing a different magical element. Which tribe of Witches you would raise depends on the version of the v-pet you have.
The clans and their respective magic are as follows:
Eneruge, who specialize in fire magic, Earthlin, who specialize in Earth magic, Baluluna, who specialize in wind magic, and Aquary, who specialize in water magic.
As your Witch grows, it can study other elements of magic! They cannot learn their opposite element until Gen 4 (and master it by Gen 5). So a Eneruge Witch has to learn Earthlin and/or Baluluna magic before they can learn Aquary magic.
Unfortunately this franchise never took off, and no further lines were created past the original line up. The toys are now quite the rare find and any online listings are super expensive.
But part of the franchise lives on within the Digimon franchise!
The Land of Witchelny is now portrayed as another dimension, so to speak, another layer to the Digital World we know. According to offcial DigimonWeb profiles, the land is ruled by elders of each clan and three sages that lead a council governing the clans.
Witchelny is split into four blocks for each cardinal direction, each occupied by a clan, and in the center lies Mount Brocken. On the top of Mount Brocken, the clans have established a joint magic school. Those who master magic (advanced programming language) at said magic school, move on to travel to the Digital World we know.
Here is a list of Digimon, who have been confirmed to have come from Witchelny: Wizardmon /X (master of fire and earth magic), FlareWizardmon (master of fire magic), Sorcerymon (master of light and ice magic), Witchmon (master of wind and water magic), Mistymon (master of various magics, of which fire is its forte), MedievalGallantmon (a legendary hero, who protected Witchelny in ancient times) and Wisemon (born in a magic-less region of Witchelny).
Furthermore, Hexeblaumon is a Digimon that came to Witchelny from the Digital World, and mastered ice magic there.
On the Option Card, Absolute Blast, which features HexeBlaumon, you can also see the symbol of Aquary!
Absolute Blast BT5-097 by Shin Sasaki from BT-05 Booster Battle of Omni
Comparing the original Magical Witches evolutionary charts to the what magic we know these Digimon to be proficient in, we can make some possible connections.
Wizardmon being a master of fire and earth magic, and Witchmon being a master of water and wind magic, these original Witches line up with their abilities.
[Wizardmon: Eneruge native master top, Earthlin native master bottom] [Witchmon: Aquary native master top, Baluluna native master bottom]
However with official artwork, such as the one below, portaying fire and water magic as their respective specialties, I believe the top sprites would be more likely.
With Mistymon being proficient in all magic, only the "Soul" type of Witch applies, which is the same in all clans.
I find this stuff super interesting! But wait... doesn't that one face look familiar...?
SATAN?!
If you are interested in Magical Witches, I recommend you check out gotchi-garden! They have a very detailed coverage on these. Also shoutout to @/MagicLad_Ty on twitter who first brought these to my attention!

Well, despite making DAMN well sure I didn't get any care mistakes this time around, I guess I unknowingly failed and made them evo-fail yet again. That's what a horrid sleep schedule does to a motherfucker. Oh well, that just means it's time for...

Oh what the fuck- oh fuck yeah! I got me a best AND worst-case scenario. Twiggy became Ancient Volcamon once again, the WORST ancient 'mon imo. Getting them once is fine, but again? Very unfortunate. At least Twiggy is paired with one of my favorite ancient 'mons, Ancient Wisemon!
Given that Volcamon can evolve into a Super Ultimate, I imagine Wisemon can do the same, so I'll make sure to take care of them right proper the next new days until I let them pass with a traited egg. Idk if I want to run these again or move on to different PenZs or just different devices is general. I'll see how I feel when the time comes

OH SHIT, I FORGOT ONE THING!!! My Frozomon evolved into... not Ancient Megatheriumon. I guess when I put it on the charger, I forgot to put it to sleep, so it evolved into Hexblaumon instead. That's fine. With what I'm hearing about the Vital Brace BE, caring about the progress made on the DiMs is pointless. Very unfortunate to hear. I'll still transfer over my favorite 'mons onto the new app, and I'll probably still use the DiMs I have every once and a while cuz I spent money on them, but yeah, we'll see what happens.
Alright, that's it for me, y'all! Until next time!

FrontierFest [11/20]
Day 11 • Favorite Ancient Evolution
Tough question, tho I got a bit confused about the “Evolution” part... Until I saw the other peeps posts and then Oh this means the Ancient Warriors...
Pardon.
We don’t see much of them besides the Frontier solo movie’s Ancient Greymon and Garurumon for a climax combo battle alongside the main five characters of the TV series.
So it’s a bit hard for me to pick something with... Screenshot? Well, let’s just use Bandai’s artwork then.
I have a deep passion with these Ancient mons: Garurumon, Sphinxmon and Wisemon.
First, AncientGarurumon is pretty cool and I love its color palette. Making it bipedal was an interesting choice. The yellow suits the white, silver and purple/blue accents. I really love this wolf warrior and it got wheelies. Please picture it goofing around with those wheelies please.
Next, AncientSphinxmon. I love this cool design for a quadrupedal digimon warrior, with Egyptian traits and those Lion-like details. The black armor works pretty well with the gold and red details. Are those things on its back wings? Because they’re very cool-like wings.
And finally, AncientWisemon. This indeed a non-conventional design for me. You would expect something merging Mercuremon and Sephirothmon like some other Ancient digimon, but... Nope! It goes to a different way. And it’s so cute in my opinion. I love digimon with this kind of “face” because it just looks like Black Mages from Final Fantasy franchise imo.
I wish we saw all ten in full color and design in Frontier... Or, a movie with them. Anyway, here’s my favorite Ancient warriors ✨
Why the only high res artwoek i found was AncientSphinxmon... Kouichi, is that you?
#FrontierFest#i remember alice or someone else had crack (?) theorized that ancientwisemon's face is just a botamon blob head.#and i love that theory so much lmao. yes for botamon rights.

Speaking of the Warrior Ten, what are your guys' preferred forms. Be it your humanoid forms or 'feral' per say.
AncientGreymon: Right! Well, I guess it's no surprise that a lot of our Ancient forms are pretty huge. While great in battle, it can make things difficult when going about our every day business, so we tend to stay in our smaller, more practical forms most of the time. For me, personally, I prefer to stay in my KaiserGreymon form. Not only is it bold and dashing, but it's what I'm used to and it's way easier to move around in! I've always been something of a swordsman as well, so I like to stay sharp with the Ryugonken. Not to mention I look particularly heroic and sexy, if I do say so myself. vwo
AncientGarurumon: *rolls his eyes* While you do cause somewhat less destruction in that form, you are somehow more troublesome, dragon. -.-;
AncientGreymon: What's that supposed to mean, mutt?! ¬.¬
AncientGarurumon: *ignores and folds his arms* As for myself, I typically use my AncientGarurumon form. It is small enough in size to be on par with a standard humanoid Digimon. However, when I require the ability of flight, I revert into my MagnaGarurumon form.
AncientWisemon: Oh, me? :3 I prefer to use my spectacular Wisemon form, of course! Why, when when my Ancient form's amplitude is not a mitigating issue, you ask? The reason is my arresting, advantageous, academic and absolutely utilitarian Book! I have access to its vast library of information, as well as its myriad other functions!
AncientGreymon: That bloody book tried to eat me on numerous occasions! >A>
AncientWisemon: Poppycock. vAv It has more discriminating tastes than to consume the likes of you.
AncientVolcamon: Well, I suppose I prefer to use my PileVolcamon form in most cases. It is a little more wieldy, as well as less scary to the average Digimon. ^.^;
AncientMegatheriummon: You are pretty sexy in your PileVolcamon form, Volca. You might even get more attention than I do! xD
AncientBeatmon: Heh, I'm sorta with Volca, apart from the sexy part, obviously. xD AncientBeatmon's a pretty useful form in combat, but when I'm just talking to random Digimon in a city, it gets all awkward because they never know which face to look at and then they look at what they think is my crotch and it gets even more awkward. xD So, yeah, I prefer to use my AtlurKabuterimon form when I'm travelling, since those electroreceptors are pretty useful. I also usually use my Blitzmon form in social situations because... you know, AtlurKabu- also big and scary. xD
AncientTroiamon: Um, w-well... as you probably know, my AncientTroiamon form is very b-big and a little awkward, although very useful in battle. ./////. I prefer to use my Shurimon form most of the time, as it is far more mobile and versatile. With it, I am able to make the most of my ninjutsu abilities.
AncientMermaidmon: And you hate how being so big makes you the center of attention, right, Shuri? -wo
AncientTroiamon: >//////<;
AncientMermaidmon: xD As for me, I'm pretty cool with being in my AncientMermaidmon form most of the time. I think I look best in this form. vwv It's also pretty handy that, in true mermaid fashion, I can shift my data to have legs on-land and use my fish tail while in the water. I get the best of both worlds. ^.^
AncientMegatheriummon: Hah, I'm pretty grateful for that too. I'd hate having to carry you around all the time, fishy. xD Anyways, obviously it's pretty hard for me to just walk around town without causing enough tremors to knock a load of buildings over, so I generally just use my Blizzarmon form. It's waaaay more useful, and I can't exactly cook my delicious meals with no hands. xD All of you'd starve, otherwise.
AncientMermaidmon: You're forgetting to mention that Blizzarmon's better for your pick-up game. =P
AncientMegatheriummon: *wiggles his eyebrows* vwv What can I say? Everybody loves a big, hunky bear.
AncientIrismon: -.-;; ...Well, as with AncientGarurumon and AncientMermaidmon, it's really no problem for me to remain in my Ancient form rather than my Valkyrimon form. Fortunately, my bird remains with me between my two Ultimate levels.
AncientSphinxmon: v.o For me, I am fine with either form, although I tend to prefer my Anubismon for the advantages that having hands affords me. AncientSphinxmon is better suited for high mobility and making the most of my darkness abilities. However, I also tend to use Anubismon due to my responsibilities to the Dark Area. It is the form that I am known for as the current judge of the dead.
AncientGreymon: Don't worry. He seems scary, but he's actually kinda cute. xD
AncientSphinxmon: ?

Review! Digimon Adventure: (2020) Episode 64: The Angels' Determination
In this episode, the real treasure was the friends we made along the way. No, really, Wisemon actually said that. That’s what they’re going with.
You know, for all the failings this series has, and all the times we come back to the lack of character depth, the bizarre tonal pacing, and the refusal to dive into any concept of substance… when you sit down and summarize the overall story and its connection to the world’s mythology, that part’s awfully solid. The ancient war won by the sacrifice of the Holy Digimon. Two of the Holy Digimon being reborn and having to find their footing in new forms in a new era. Remnants of that war creeping up and becoming even bigger threats. The final catastrophe coming from a place beyond traditional good or evil. This is strong stuff! As fun as it is to watch the story come to a boil here, can you imagine what this would be if we had real characters in it?
The closest we have has been Patamon, with all his adorable little doubts about saving the world in this form and his connection to Devimon and all. That connection returns in a dream shared by Patamon and his partner, a message about how Devimon manifested and its connection to the Great Catastrophe. While it doesn’t actually provide Takeru any actionable information, it’s a nice way of connecting the dots between the assorted crises the Digital World has endured. It’s also a reminder of Patamon’s situation, which feels like it should be important given the nature of this new enemy. Granted, it also feels like it won’t be, and Patamon’s dalliances with the darkness will be viewed as something he overcame rather than something that needs to be accepted.
While the early attention to Takeru and Hikari is welcomed and appropriate, it quickly gets drowned out by the attack on Wisemon’s center and the big reunion. The coordinated Soundbirdmon attack is the sort of raised stakes we’ve been waiting a while for, and the chaos doesn’t disappoint. Nor does the defense riding to the rescue, tossing around Soundbirdmon and the assorted Digimon they possess. And definitely not the eventual (eventual meaning it drags out forever) fusion of Deathmon to really kick the party off. Along the way we also get a nice summary of the overall history of the conflicts and see that Deathmon slots in just fine.
Easily the best concept raised is the notion that the Great Catastrophe isn’t necessarily a force of light or darkness. The idea of a white void suggests an absence of everything, which fits with the notion of the world’s destruction. An entity that’s sick of all the squabbling between good and evil forces that just wants to wipe everything off the map isn’t unheard of in Digimon (Yggdrasil and Homeostasis have both dabbled in that mindset in the past), but we’re always up for a good exploration of the idea. Granted, we’d have more confidence in this if Millenniumon in the ancient war and the Vademon now hadn’t also been pursuing the world’s destruction. They were pretty firmly tied to the evil camp. In fact, Devimon, the one that most seemed to be influenced by the Catastrophe, was the only villain who actually had motivations that went beyond destroying the place.
This conflation between evil and nihilism makes it hard to expect anything interesting from the Great Catastrophe. Look at its harbinger Deathmon: it’s called Deathmon! Wisemon even asks why an agent of darkness would be working towards white nothingness. There could be some logic here: it takes Seraphimon and Ofanimon making their grand reappearances to take Deathmon out, and it’s his destruction that triggers the start of the end. Perhaps the whole point was that beings of good destroyed a being of evil and therefore this whole mess is destined to happen for eternity unless the board was cleared. For that to work, of course, stopping it would entail good and evil powers working in unison. This is where proper nurturing of Patamon having this darkness within him would make for a hell of a final twist. You can bet that’s not going to happen.
If anything could sum up the season in one go, it’s the way the crests are used to bring back the Holy Digimon. Wisemon says that key to their activation was the kids spending time in the Digital World and bonding with it. Which is all well and good if it came with any sort of individuality, like having each child there mattered for a different reason. No, the crests finally get namedropped, but all clumped together, as if each of the eight possessed all eight attributes simultaneously. Which… based on the way they were portrayed this season, isn’t far from the truth.
My Grade: B
Loose Data:
If Devimon was the messenger for this dream, what was the point of Tsukaimon? It was almost like he was the dark parallel to Patamon and Devimon was the dark parallel to… Takeru?
Seeing the Worm Trailmon again was nice and all, but the real earnest bit of Frontier nostalgia was the Ball Trailmon from the movie strolling in later with Hikari and Tailmon.
At least Wisemon demonstrated that he learned from Nanomon about the Soundbirdmon’s ability to brainwash other Digimon and prepared his team mentally for that.
Boy, badass evolution to Seraphimon and Ofanimon, total destruction of Deathmon, and Joe’s absolutely sure that didn’t end anything and he’s absolutely right.

FrontierFest [18/20]
Day 18 • What aspect of the series would you like to have been more developed?
Hmm...
• I’d have liked if they had given those douple spirit evolution to the other four kids. I love DaiPenmon (Kumamon + Blizzarmon) a lot, and I’d have chuckled at Tomoki evolving into it. Big penguin with ice cream weapons. Or see the cool Raihimon (Loweemon + KaiserLeomon) in action ;o;
• Also, wouldn’t have been fun if everyone had their own Hyper Spirit evolution time? In which everyone would have their own chance to fight? Or even, how about they just copy the data of the spirits from the group and then use such copied data to evolve, without having to make the rest of the party unable to evolve & fight? Like, I think Frontier’s the only series in which the unbalanced power to the protag & side B damages the teamwork of the main cast.
• I’d have liked to see which digimon were used to be the evil warriors. We only know they’re digimon because Cherubimon had a beef with humans and humanoid digimon. So I’m pretty sure this implies he used beast-like digimon to spirit evolve them.
• And, to finish this post: I’d have liked to know more about the Ancient Ten Warriors. Maybe more flashbacks about all ten. Maybe them in full design & color. Really, why only Ancient Greymon and Garurumon can appear in a whole movie for a climax battle but not the others? ;o; Ancient Irismon and Sphinxmon have wonderful cool designs... So does Ancient Mermaimon and Wisemon... orz
• [edited note] I totes agree with peeps in the tag about the family background for Izumi and Junpei. I’d have loved to see it as well...
Listen, I love Frontier... And I wish more cool stuff with them all... 😔

Review! Digimon Adventure: (2020) Episode 51: The Mystery Hidden Within the Crests
In this episode, a research consortium pulls the team aside and forces them to wonder about the crests they’ve been ignoring since the very beginning.
In case you needed any more proof that the fight against Millenniumon was a fleeting and relatively insignificant moment in the series, consider how quickly everyone moves on to other business. Without a moment’s hesitation, with barely a second thought, everybody is ready for the next thing. It’s as if Millenniumon was never the cataclysmic battle the show spent twenty episodes assuring us it was. As a way to set up the next arc, this could be far worse. There’s a promise of another major clash, a mystery to investigate, and a genuinely interesting development poking out from the background. But its entire premise underscores just how badly the kids refuse to consider their own situation and complacently ride the rails the world puts them on.
Even if we the audience know the adventure isn’t over, it would have been awfully nice if the kids themselves believed it a little longer. They get their moment on the hillside to relax for a minute—they’ve earned that—but before they get a chance to really ask the question, Garbemon buzzes them with their next instructions. Mimi’s rightfully annoyed at the interruption, but everyone’s quick to end their break and pop off to the next thing. For all that we’re supposed to believe they’ve gone through, there’s no sign of weariness, no thoughts of going home, and only the tiniest echoes of hope that this was the end. This isn’t the only season guilty of ignoring this (Xros Wars even doubles down when only Akari seems to show trip fatigue), but it’s another missed opportunity to humanize the kids a little before returning to business.
Garbemon leads them to an impressive research facility, populated by scattered cameos and Wisemon from Xros Wars. But rather than experimenting on the kids ahead of Millenniumon’s revival, they’ve been hard at work investigating data and hosting the giant crests hovering over an altar. The result of their research? Absolutely nothing. They spin that as a positive, a known mystery they’re curious to have no data on, suggesting that it goes further back than recorded history. It’s a legitimate mindset, but it also takes away any purpose beyond translating whatever future discoveries the kids are bound to make. Oh, and making the kids actually think about this stuff for once.
It’s amazing how little thought the kids have put into where they are and what they’re being dragged through. The crests have consistently appeared before them to boost their power at opportune moments, but not a single one of them has given it a second thought. Koshiro dismissed them as some sort of ID tag, despite bearing no resemblance to the written Digital World language he’s encountered before. Even then, he didn’t bother bringing it up until now. Given the power that they surely must have recognized is attached to those symbols, why should they be so surprised to see them on ancient pedestals? Why wouldn’t they want to understand the significance of them, especially when they’re unique to each individual and the reward is maximizing the power they generate? That’s power they should have needed against what they should have believed was the ultimate enemy.
Considering how much Millenniumon had been hyped, they’re not that shocked to know there’s something worse beyond him. Clearly they noticed how easily he went down too. The Great Catastrophe is too vague to think about right now, but the fact that the Soundbirdmon are back and unleashing attacks speaks to… something relevant. So is the sudden inability for Patamon and Tailmon to evolve. It’s a good thing there are interesting tidbits in all that, because there was nothing special in that fight with the Kirby knockoff.
There’s also something kind of interesting about the compasses all pointing in different directions. It’s the first time the show suggested the kids’ paths are supposed to be different. It acknowledges that they’re different people, their crests mean different things, and they’re going to behave differently to reach their full potential. Because after fifty episodes, they haven’t yet. They’ve been almost entirely uniform in their thinking, with no disagreements in sight. So that lack of foundation makes it easy to be cynical about this gesture. You’d be inclined to dismiss this as an excuse to split up the party again.
My Grade: C
Loose Data:
How embarrassing for the kids that they hadn’t questioned the crests at all while Garbemon gets a glimpse at one and immediately recognizes its significance and drops everything else to research it.
Given its previous usages in the franchise, the mad Yggdrasil vibes coming out of this research facility are awfully strange. No points if it turns out that was intentional.
The return of the Soundbirdmon is very notable as it harkens back to the Devimon faction, potentially independent from the Millenniumon camp. Two different enemy camps would have been kind of fun if they had clashed for more than five seconds and if we hadn’t long forgotten about the Devimon camp.
Between the focus on the mountain of unsortable junk data at the facility Burpmon spitting out Garbemon because he doesn’t like garbage, you would have thought the solution would be using the unappetizing junk to deter him from eating the fighters or their attacks. But no, it was using whatever they had lying around to stuff his pie hole! He’ll eat junk just fine; Garbemon was just a red herring.
It took them ten episodes to drive from the area around the hot spring to FAGA. It took them half a second to get from FAGA to the research center. Watch how little time it takes to get from the research center back to the hot spring.
Actually, how weird is it that Joe’s solution to Patamon and Tailmon’s inability to evolve is to take them to a spa treatment at an notoriously unwelcoming hot spring?
