HELLO would you like to read some FIC?
Do you crave some fresh new Kurofai stories to get you through the season?
Did you watch the recent Olympics and think to yourself, “Well that was fine but it could use a lot more fictional gay characters falling in love with each other in it?”
Well you’re in luck! The Kurofai Olympics is happening right now.
Best of all, if you ever find yourself writing a comment on AO3 and going, “Gee, I sure wish I could also submit my thoughts via voting on various categories on a Google Docs,” well, they have that too! You can vote on each fic you read and help them choose the overall winning team of the year.

May I ask what's wrong with changing modern adaptations of ancient stories to fit the morality of today? The way I see it, it's hard to connect with the characters portrayed when every second one is a rapist of some kind.
Stories adhering as much as they can will never be as popular or appreciated as ones modified to be engaging to the audience they have now.
Stories are meant to entertain, and the audience they were originally made for is dead. What the audience finds entertaining changes in decades. Does it not make sense to adapt them to that?
You answered your question yourself. By placing modern day morality and fitting it to ancient stories we just twist the original stories and their meaning and we create a false idea of the past to make it sound as if that place was consisted of people who were terrible they had no Morals at all and nowadays we are the great moral people that know what's up.
You said it yourself: "when every second one was a rapist of some kind". That is just false assumption on both the characters and the past. In fact rape was severely punished. Even in the Epic Cycle when Locrian Ajax raped Cassandra the soldiers were trying to stone him to death and he had to take refuge to a sanctuary. Him being a noble didn't matter before such an immoral act. Rape was not casual as "modern morality readings" think. There is a big risk of misunderstanding when we project our morality in ancient stories which were not always THAT far away from us at some things.
At another case I have heard people speak of "gay ancient greece" when the concept of "gay" didn't even exist and not only that homosexiality had a much more complicated meaning in antiquity than we think now and no it was not a bunch of people kissing their partners in public as many people do in 21st century. Again there is a danger to misunderstand stuff and they do get misunderstood
Modern day morality changes by experience of mine never realize the harm they do to the narrative and character development (for example Odysseus giving out his name to Polyphemus has nothing to do with modern narrative saying "oh he was stupid" there is an entire analysis behind it which just harms the character and his development by bluntly say that without taking the background in consideration)
Changing stuff to ellegedly "fit modern narrative" is inheritently dangerous because it contains personal biases on what morality is in the first place and it is harmful often because these stories are far from just entertainment; they are witness of the past and a past culture and by changing them according to the bias of one person on modern morality consequently leads to the misinterpretation of the past. And in the end of the day ancient stories are still entertaining today. Look at the festivals in Greece where we play ancient theater as it was written. We have only changed the concept of the full face mask. So allow me to disagree and say the ancient stories still entertain today and the admirers of them are not dead at all.
I am not saying it is wrong in every shape or form in fact as I said million times already it is even expected to add some elements from each culture or era to appease the public. The problem begins when that story is exclusively looked through that keyhole and then we have the bias of one person on the text shaping the past and have a story that simply doesn't work and many people even those with no knowledge in the past realize there is something wrong with the picture. See how many people who love the Iliad and the Odyssey criticized Miller for adding too much of her modern morality in her books. Even people who are not experts realized the story was damaged despite her beautiful weiting etc

sometimes I think about how one of the properties of human languages that separates us from other animals is that our language is culturally transmitted, meaning though we have an innate capacity to learn a language we still have to learn it, while animals don't. and then I think about how elves are born speaking enlightened. and then I have to forcibly remind myself shannon likely didn't take any of that into consideration and I should go outside or something
#kotlc#kotlc worldbuilding#every time I think about the languages in keeper I start shaking and vibrating#i mixed up those two words when typing and accidentally said I shart </3#anyway. thinks about the 'translations' of the other species' capitals and explodes#thinks about vesperas signature and explodes#thinks about ancient vs modern runes and explodes

I know that Heien Shiki and Yuzuki didn't have any children but hear me out on a heart wrenching thought I had.
They have only one child. A little girl that doesn't survive past four years old. (Maybe the same condition as Yuzuki?) The loss of her makes Shiki and Yuzuki unwilling to try again. By sheer coincidence either with a single character, the sound or meaning in her name; Tsumiki also has that in her name.
Just imagine Shiki waking up in the modern day(maybe looking forward to finding Yuzuki?) and one of the first things she learns is that her vessel shares part of her lost daughter's name. Like logically she knows that Tsumiki isn't her daughter reborn, but yet...she can not allow this girl to be harmed.
Also did Kenjaku know what they were doing when they choose this girl as the vessel? Do they dare to have the audacity to mock Shiki's dead baby like this?
Oh yikes, there would definitely be extra angst points in this AU if this was the case.
It would also change up the situation -previously we have Shiki being Not Interested in Kenjaku's games or fighting anyone, she just wants to see Yuzuki again. But if we suppose that 'Tsumiki' (/or some related name) was the name of her dead child then I think she'd definitely have a bone to pick with Kenjaku. Which begs the question of why he would think that this is a good idea in the first place...
Supposing that Kenjaku knew exactly what he was doing... one can only surmise that he deliberated intended to draw Shiki's ire. Hm. Possibly to orchestrate a Sukuna vs. Shiki encounter again and benefit from the results?
#QA#zenith of stars au#heian shiki au#considering that kenjaku put into motion his plans of incarnating ancient sorcerers after the first time sukuna vs. shiki happened#back during the heian era#one can only imagine what he's aiming to do with a re-enactment in modern times

Absolutely death gripped clenched trying not to comment on reductive posts on ancient greek homosexual relationships
#It is neither wholly '0mg two gay guys in love!!' and 'I am humiliating and debasing a lower man by making a woman out of him'#There's heavy elements of that in how they conceptualized penetrator vs penetrated but the erastes (lover/protector) and eromenos (beloved)#relationship was significantly more complex than that#Like it is conceptualized as sort of a mentor/mentee relationship and a positive element for an adolescent's development#It was the subject of romantic plays and you get things like people in antiquity in heated debates over who is the#erastes and who is the eromenos between Achilles and Patroclus (to better depict them in plays)#The bottom line is more 'the socially accepted m/m relationships were (what we would now consider) an adult and a child#(or young man) with the age difference being a fundamental element to the dynamic.'#And more broadly being penetrated in sex assigned a 'lower' or 'womanly' role and it would not be conventionally accepted#for an older/more socially powerful man to recieve penetration (which certainly DID happen though)#So absolutely a moment in the history of male homosexuality and not something to just go 'ew ew bad evil ewwie' about but also#not something you want to project modern conceptions of LGBT identity upon#Also we know relatively little about relationships between women in ancient Greece due to lack of sources due to being a#highly patriarchal culture but we can't actually know that they did not involve similar power dynamic#Certainly not to the same extent or in such a well socially defined way (bc they conceptualize sex almost entirely through a lens of#penetration) but I think you should be treating relations between ancient Greek women with the same degree of#historical distance from our lives and identities today.#Ok death grip failed I just typed an entire rant. Fiuck it

I know that 'The Secret History is a satire' is an extremly prevalent take, and I think it came about as a response to the idea that tsh "romanticises" things like classist ideas/substance abuse/murder, but like. It can be unsupportive or critical of the characters without being a satire. Satire is not the word you're looking for here
#tsh#the secret history#And frankly in my opinion it is also an incredibly boring and reductive interpretation anyway#Like. There's so much else to chew on here.#Fate. the ancient vs modern digression vs obsession dichotomy happening. Identity/loss of self.#The immortality/death/ghost/memory thing. The unreliable narration.#The way their paths notably shape them but remain illusory. Fate.#You're missing out on so much if you only interpret it as a satire.#And frankly. Satire is a specific thing that is not this.#Like you can argue that ONE of the things happening is an intentional criticsim of the characters but#a. That's not automatically the same as satire b. That's not the only thing happening#c. You could debate whether 'criticsim' is really the word to use here anyway#As opposed to like. Being self aware of and intentional about the characters flaws and#using them to further illustrate and exlore the stories themes.#Like. You wouldn't call blood meridian a 'satire' just because the narrative is 'critical' of the judge.#That's not how anything works. Having flawed/amoral characters does not mean#you have to make the entire point of the work into a denunciation of them.

biggest pet peeve is when people refuse to acknowledge/don’t understand that the greek epics were written in a completely different era of cultural and societal norms 😭😭😭
#like okay!!!! we get it. we understand NOW that all the stuff that was acceptable back then is and was horrible#some ppl can never get past that and then go waterdown the myth and spread misinformation#ancient greece was horrible to women. it reflected in their myths#they kept bride prizes. didn’t have a real difference between ‘kidnapping’ and marriage#yes sparta had women who were allowed more freedom than other places#BUT THEY WERE AN INSANE MILITARY SOCIETY????#men stayed in barracks to train like their whole life. so women kind of were left to do the rest???#but they also had the biggest slave population so they practically did no labour#they were more afraid of an uprising than any other invading enemy 😭#i get having ur own interpretation esp based on more modern adaptations#but wanting to erase all this to justify liking the epics is so stupid#it all boils back down to the anti vs pr0ship internet debate#god im so tired LMFAO#ik i say pr0shits dni but if u legit ask me if im anti or pr0ship#i would just say man im an adult living in the real world#i have a brain#and can think for myself#i just would rather attract antis to my blog than pr0shits bc i find them very annoying#we get it you’re ‘problematic’ oml#this became way off topic but oh well

I think every time drama flairs up regarding what dragons people dislike that we all remember one thing: We all actually have the freedom of what dragons we own and no one is holding us at gunpoint to have types we don't like. It's actually super fine to just chill out and mind our own businesses.
#I'm not referring to the playful teasing ancient vs modern posts of course#that were all presumably in good fun#but people really dying on the hill of it... my friends no one is asking you to die for it
