Iruka casually dropping that his ma was ANBU and his friends are like "oh that's cool - WAIT WHAT???" and this is how Kakashi finds out that Vulture, the commanding officer who struck fear into every new recruit and once used a barrier to crush someone into paste against a wall, is Iruka's mother. The same mother he used to describe as "not big on affection and kind of a tough love sort but had a soft spot for sushi." The same mother he said "burst into tears one time because she was high on pain meds and was overcome with Feelings"

And now he just has to live with that knowledge. Forever. At least they finally have an explanation for Iruka's infamous temper

i know it wasn't the point of the post but i see the "naruto has a personal ANBU guard" thing a lot in fics and i always accept it, not bc i think he gets beat in the street or whatever, but simply because it seems irresponsible to leave the vessel of a chakra monster (whose containment relies on emotional stability) loose without supervision. it seems likely that they'd want at least one person knowing where he is at all times, both to keep the village safe from him and also to keep other villages from stealing him (that said, the sandaime had a crystal ball that he used as a monitoring device (???) so maybe thats how they did it lol)

listen i get you. i see you trying to apply logic. but also i need to point out that during the chunin exam they just let gaara kill people. like not even during his fights or during the invasion. he and orochimaru just killed random people and no one seemed to care. it is implied orochimaru and danzo just disappear people and no one does anything. kakashi took sasuke out of the village with no explanation about why or where they were going and they legit thought it was possible orochimaru had them and they continued to do nothing. i do not think that as a society they are capable of thinking that far ahead

Maybe they didn't get along because Kakashi was a jerk in his younger days, and in his anbu years he was worse so him and y/n really hated each other but when they got older they were forced to do missions together by the hokage and they fell in love naturally? Kakashi X Reader | When He Was Jerk To You

Kakashi has been your mortal enemy since the very beginning. Your ninja way was that everyone in the team comes first, and then the mission. Which, as we all know, was opposite to his ninja way.

So you both always used to quarrel since the very beginning about this. And as you heard about what happened to Obito, you sympathized with him. But as soon as he got into anbu after that, he was even more rude and avoidant to you. So you decided it was best not to show him any sympathy since he didn't deserve it.

Little did you know what he was going through you can't help it. He was hiding it all way too well.

But this one time, you both got a mission together as you two became adults. You were agonized to have been assigned a mission with him, but you had to do it anyway since Tsunade, who was more or less your mentor asked you to.

So you agreed. The mission was very quiet. You two set the ground rules and shared very few words. It was all going smoothly until you both came across a random outcast and you were in danger.

As you lay there on the ground, you saw him running away. But through blurry eyes you could see some figure running towards you, you flinched but you recognized his chakra and felt safe and confused at the same time. Was this the truth or the lack of blood has made you hallucinate?

It was confirmed, once you woke up in the hospital bed and not in some cave. Kakashi saved you.

"But why?" you asked yourself. "Talking to yourself? Hmm, maybe you need more rest I'll come back later." you saw the gray-haired guy standing at the end of your room.

He was about to exit through the door when you said, "Why did you save me?". He turned around, gave his famous one-eyed smile, and said, "Why wouldn't I? We're on the same team, right?"

You were in shock but kept quiet and watched him walk away. That's when you were startled again by a voice in the background," He's changed y'know." Your mentor was there for you even in illness.

"What do you mean?" you asked, confused. "He..." she sighed heavily, "...has been through a lot. Something you and I cannot dare to imagine. As much of a slob as Jaraiya is, he told me all about it with every detail."

You didn't question more. You know you cannot get anything out of it since it is not her place to tell you, so you ended the conversation with a hmm.

Later you decided to talk to him about what happened on the mission. You were a little hesitant that he might make you look small again like he used to do back in his teenage years. But your mentor's words stuck with you. He told you all about it and even complimented you here and there.

That is when you started to open up a bit to him and started talking to him more often. You didn't realize when this rivalry turned into friendship which led to something even more.

Until one day, you found yourself giggling like crazy as you are making dinner at his house and he is ranting about how tough it is to sign all those paperwork as Hokage. Giving you occasional kisses on the neck and hugs from behind whenever he finds your giggle cute.

ok ok ok so i am going to be around here in a little bit, to respond to some ooc stuff. I'm finishing up a series & then i will be (fresh) but i am thinking about the first time kakashi smokes a cigarette. thinking about him being too young, seeing his commander in anbu smoking & asking ' can i get one of those? '. of course he does, because there are no children in anbu. & he smokes it & he throws up afterwards & minato smells the smoke on him later that day & calls him out on it. he doesn't smoke again until after he leaves anbu. he'll have an occasional cigarette here & there, but he can't go around smelling like smoke when he's supposed to be invisible.

so here we arrive at another part of kakashi's life. after leaving anbu, I've hc'd that he had a fling with asuma. maybe he & kruenai broke it off for a few months, Kakashi crawled into asuma's bed & stayed there. it wasn't a healthy relationship, as asuma was blatantly in love with kurenai & Kakashi was more content to watch him love someone else. plus he was totally unwilling to put in the effort to build a relationshop, as kakashi didn't know who he was. anyways the point I'm getting to is he picks up the habit more regularly from asuma. so he's not a regular smoker until he's around 25 & the habit sticks

There is a scroll with a ribbon left on Kakashi's window. And inside are not some secrets about ROOT that was a bit outdated but still important and it talked about Danzo's involvement with the civil wars of Amegakure and with Hanzo as well. The only identity of the mysterious sender was a drawing with a pair of glasses on it.

There is a note attached to the letter that reads, "If this kind of information is good enough to open your eyes to the real corruption of the very village you live in and how involved it was to the other village's wars as well. I do hope that this would be enough to get you to leave it. If you need a place to stay, do let me know."

Kakashi snags the scroll the moment he sees it, tucking it in his satchel and favoring a location away from potentially peering eyes. What he reads sends a course of chills and boiling anger, his memory drinking in every fine detail and correlating it to what he already knew.

He'd known Danzo's hands were bloodied, but this indicated they were far more drenched than he had imagined.

Kakashi slouched back, feeling a sickening weight in the pit of his stomach as a slough of thoughts ran through his head. His decisions would be crucial from here on, for he knew what would become of himself if he dared to defy Danzo directly and openly. They'd had confrontations in the past, and he'd dodged those greedy hands as they had tried to weave him into a network of defiling acts.

He would need to locate the sender of this letter, and he knew that by doing so, he may just have to seal his own fate.

His hands summon a trusted companion--Pakkun--and he urges the ninken to collect the scent from the parchment as he quickly writes a note in return.

Your information is appreciated and correlates to what I've discovered on my own. If you would be willing, I would like to request a private meeting with you. I will come alone if you agree. You have my word.

Kakashi Hatake

You hated how full of himself he was. He was always talking down to people, to his teammates and so-called friends. He goes out of his way to show people up no matter how inappropriate the situation may be.

He hated that you always stuck up for people he considered weak. He hated how much time and energy you put into helping others instead of focusing on your own training. He hated that you had so much potential, yet seemed to waste it at every opportunity.

As time went on and you were forced into each other's inner circles, your occasional arguments became a constant bicker. It got even worse when you were assigned to his ANBU team. You questioned his every move and fought every decision he made.

In return, he always gave you the least desirable night shifts. He'd make you write all the reports, saying something about needing to learn to respect your elders (he's only a few months older than you).

Once you were put in charge of your own team, things quieted down. Not because either of you had mellowed out, but because you didn't cross paths as often anymore.

Because of how rarely you saw him, you always made sure to make your brief encounters worth it. You had practically written a list of insults to throw his way. He returned the same energy with out hesitation.

Eventually, after his genin team had gone their separate ways and you had finally retired from ANBU, you had a seemingly infinite amount of time to rekindle your rivalry with him.

He always seemed to be heading in the same direction as you were. It didn't matter if you were on your way to the Hokage's office, the shops, or meeting up with someone- he was always there.

You tried to fight with him like the good old days, but it was different now that you were grown adults. Maybe the ungodly amount of trauma combined with the wedge distance had created in your odd relationship had finally put an end to your petty war.

Thinking back, maybe this is what it had been all along, and your stupid kid brain was too proud to admit what was really going on.

Your arguing had turned into kissing the moment he stepped through your apartment door. Things moved quickly, expert hands doing away with endless layers of Jonin uniforms in a rushed attempt to feel more of each other.

It felt right. Like the decades of tension had finally come to a head and you were being forced to deal with it in the most animalistic way possible.

"I hate you."

Your mumbling between desperate kisses. He doesn't acknowledge you immediately, opting to instead lift you by your ass so your legs could wrap around him. He pushes you against the wall, pressing his clothed election right against your womanhood.

"I hate you, too."

Neither of you acknowledges the elephant in the room, that the word you're looking for isn't actually hate. But that's beyond your cloudy minds right now.

Shikamaru Nara

Shikamaru has never really bothered with social pleasantries or subjected himself to cater to what people like and dislike. In fact, he often chastised people for caring what others think.

He always commented about what you wore, how well groomed you were, and the overall effort you put into your appearance each day.

You hated listening to it, which is why you always did your best to avoid him.

It wasn't even about you specifically. You hated hearing how rudely he'd shut down Ino when she would ramble on about anything. You hated when he complained about how loud Naruto and Kiba were despite knowing that they're just excitable people. You hated hearing the damn near sexist remarks he'd make about how stupid people were for giving any shots about how they looked.

It was annoying. It didn't seem to phase anyone else anymore, but that almost made it worse.

You were at your breaking point. Just one comment away from losing your composure and you prayed to God you'd be able to refrain from saying anything too harsh.

But alas, Kakashi had assigned you to yet another mission with him- the sixth one just this month.

At least he waited until you were at the Inn before he started up with you. You honestly don't know why he let you shower first if it was going to be such an issue.

"Finally. I thought you'd be in there forever."

"What the Hell is your problem with me?"

He paused in his tracks. He wasn't expecting you to say anything to his usual grumbling, and especially didn't expect it to be so hostile.

"You always take forever in the bathroom."

"It was twenty minutes. You'll live."

"It wouldn't be that long if you didn't bother with all the extra shit you use."

"Why is it such a problem that I care about what I look like? I don't ever involve you in it and yet you're always talking about it."

He rolled his eyes, about to blow off whatever you were saying, but you started up again before he could.

"All you ever do is bitch and whine and moan about dumb shit that doesn't concern you. I like to look nice. I like wearing clothes that compliment my figure and putting time into the health of my hair and skin. It's not the end of the world, so shut the fuck up about it already."

You walked past him and lay in one of the twin beds, tired from the journey and pissed about your teammate's usual poor behavior.

He didn't say anything. He continued with what he was going to do before the argument and carried on like nothing had happened.

He kept any conversations strictly professional for the duration of the mission, something you were ecstatic about.

It wasn't until a few days after you returned home that you heard from him. He showed up at your apartment unprompted, looking irritated and slightly flustered.

"After talking with my team, it may have come to my attention that I might be kind of an ass."

You invited him in, curious as to what he had to say. He admitted that he had never been called out on it. Most people don't take him too seriously and he may have gotten a bit too comfortable voicing every thought that crossed his mind.

Although he had mostly soothed any nerves you had, you still decided he owed you.

You dragged him into your room, sat him at your vanity, and laughed when he groaned. You pulled out all the stops for him. You took him through your entire routine start to finish and when you were done, you asked him hiw it felt.

He hated that it felt nice. He hated that he suddenly realized how dry his skin usually was and how clean he suddenly felt. He would never fully admit that to you, though.

Him showing up at your apartment the next day, conveniently around the time you usually started these things, was all the confirmation you needed that he no longer deemed it a waste of time.

Sasuke Uchiha

He hated going to the Hokage's office, not because he was still in the thick of earning his freedom after the war, but because he hated Kakashi’s assistant.

You annoy him. He hates that you so confidently push his buttons. He hates that you're just a civilian, but you've been given so much authority over him. It was an unfit existence for the last Uchiha.

You enjoyed messing with him. He would grumble when given his assignment and you made sure to mock him with a playful pout. You'd check in with the ANBU watching over him to make sure he was behaving. You always used that word- behaving. As if he were a child.

Unfortunately for Sasuke, Kakashi isn't in the village right now, meaning he's stuck taking orders from you. He swears Kakashi picked you to oversee him intentionally, knowing how much it would bother him.

He's sitting next to you, helping you go through seemingly endless piles of paperwork. He wasn't sure if this was better than all the D-rank missions he'd been assigned lately, but he begrudgingly accepted the change of pace.

He glances at you through his peripherals. The sun is just going down, the orange light illuminating your soft features. Your usual bratty expression was replaced with a more peaceful one.

This was most likely just as much a break for you as it was for him. He wasn't oblivious to the way you had to reel Kakashi in every day, damn near having to tie him to his chair to get anything done.

"You can go home. I'll finish up here and we can resume tomorrow."

He didn't argue, thankful for relief from the horrifically tedious task. As he was leaving the building, he suddenly got this feeling in his gut that he should stay.

Of course, not wanting to do more paperwork than he was required to, he ignored the feeling and carried on.

He should've stayed. Just an hour after he left, while you were packing up for the night, the tower was raided by rogue nin.

The alarm sounded in the village, immediately calling all available shinobi. Bee, the ANBU assigned to him, gave him permission to lend a hand, and off they went to the tower.

He teleported himself to Kakashi’s office, knowing you would most likely be in there or at least somewhere near. What he wasn't expecting, however, was you standing over a body, kunai in hand and blood splattered across your body.

"Y/N?"

You didn't move, couldn't move. He reached forward, tugged the blade out of your shaky grip, and let it fall to the floor. You let him, not really in the mood to fight any more than you had to right now.

"Is he dead?"

Your question caught him off guard.

"I've never killed anyone before."

Ah. Civilian. Right. Sure, you belonged to a Shinobu village and even worked under the Kage, but that was vastly different than being on the front lines.

He thought for a second. Was he in any sort of position to be responsible for you at the moment? Should he hand you off to one of the other nin and return home?

"Cover your eyes."

It took a minute for his words to register in your hazy mind, but once they did you obeyed. If there was one thing you knew would benefit you, it would be allowing him to take the lead for now.

He put his hand between your shoulder blades and guided you through the hallways, down the stairs, and away from the tower completely. He glanced around, but couldn't find Bee, so he opted to take you back to his apartment. It would cause a lot less trouble if he was where he was supposed to be after all.

At home, he sat you down in the tub and turned on the water. He left you there, letting all the blood loosen from your skin. He returned a moment later, setting a stack of clothes down on the counter and grabbing a rag from the cabinet.

Neither of you spoke as he gently scrubbed your face. When he was done, he got a little bit of shampoo and worked all the red out of your hair.

You were slowly coming out of your daze. It was nice being brought out by something kind and comforting. It was almost enough to distract you from the night's events. Almost.

When he was done, he handed you the cloth, telling you to finish up and see him when you're done. You nodded, standing up and undressing when the door closed. You noticed how clean the water ran, most likely due to how thoroughly the Uchiha had taken care of you.

When you stepped out of the tub, you noticed the clothes on the counter. Upon closer inspection, they were similar to the ones he was wearing now- a t-shirt and sweats.

You joined him in the adjacent bedroom where he waited patiently. He all but forced you into his bed, shutting down all of your protests. When he went to leave the room, you quickly grabbed the fabric of his shirt to stop him.

"Please stay."

He didn't fight you. He walked around to the other side of the bed and sat down, leaning against the headboard and staring blanky in front of him.

You were thankful for the comfort of simply not being alone. Not after tonight, when so much had happened and the trauma was still fresh in your mind.

He tried telling himself that this was not a personal act, but instead one that would aid his village. But who was he kidding? He was realizing you weren't all that terrible and he had just allowed his angst brain to manipulate him into thinking so.

There are so many naruto time travel fics out there but what I need SPECIFICALLY is an ANBU era team of Kakashi, Tenzo, Itachi, and Shisui getting flung into the founders era.

Like. Ok just looking from the political side of it that's;

A) 2 very young and VERY powerful Uchiha's (one of which is the future clan head!! Politics!!)

B) A very fucked up baby mokuton user who's still in the middle of being deprogrammed and can totally pass for Senju

C) The free wild card that is Hatake clan lore on top of having a stolen sharingan. On top of *that* him being the team leader of a team of kids who, in the time period context, should both be at eachothers throats and probably not be expected to obey the commands of someone not only from another clan but a way smaller one

Theres SO much potential there!! So many political implications in virtually ALL of the directions!!!!

Yk what as I'm typing this out I'm having ✨️ideas✨️ so let's make some story points to sort those out:

• I think itd be neat to have this happen like. A year? Ish? Before the massacre? So age wise, and full disclaimer I'm referencing Google and Wikipedia rn so I could totally be wrong, I think that's :

Big fan of Tobirama being the youngest between the 4 but projecting the aura of someone as old as like. Idk, however old Madara is. Very funny to me, 10/10

• I'm personally a big fan of dogteeth kakashi so we're running with that all the way home. Also a huge fan of the "Hatake's are a distant, more feral cousin of Inuzuka clan" hc along with some sprinklings of "back in the day they had a bit of a Reputation(tm) for being a 'lill wild, and everyone generally tries to avoid them. Which isn't too much of a problem because theyre a very small out of the way clan from Iron, they just have a big reputation in contrast to their size.

In more modern times tho, along with (obviously) having dwindled down to a single depressed teenager, they've become a lot tamer over the years due to village life. Kakashi is a Hatake, 100%, but he is NOT up to the standards of this time. Which becomes a bit funny when people see him, go "oh FUCK it's a Hatake" and then start edging slowly towards the door like he's about to rip their throat out with his teeth. Meanwhile he's standing there like 🧍‍♂️"am I that ugly."

Give me a scene where, finally used to this reaction to him from the general shinobi population, the team starts to use it to their advantage.

"Give us the scroll or we'll let the Hatake off the leash to have his fun with you. He's been awfully hungry latley you know, hasn't had fresh meat in days"

Kakashi, feeling kind of stupid, gave his best growl.

It caused an almost immediate, embaressed flush to rise to his face, but he didn't let up. It sounded more like an almost pathetic puppy growl than anything to his ears, but apparently it was enough to convince the trembling enemy nin because he slowly lifted the scroll up in offering.

Wow. Now he couldn't tell if he was embaressed for himself or for this guy.

Probably both to be honest.

• So like. Itachi is the clan heir. That's big. That's important. Let's do something with that.

First off, I had a great time reading this one fic (tho I don't even remember what the fic itself was about now, oops) where a plot point of it was how Sasuke is just a walking stereotype of main house Uchiha. Like people look at him and they don't just go "oh that's an Uchiha." They go "oh fuck that's an UCHIHA Uchiha." He's so fucking painfully, obviously related to the very tippy top of the clan that anyone not blind can tell. It's in the way he looks, it's in the way he talks and treats those around him, it's in the way he fucking holds himself. You look at him and every other stereotype about the Uchiha clan is there in big, bold letters. (On top of that he's also a dead wringer for Izuna, which I'm such a sucker for and desperatley wish people would do more with)

So like let's give that to Itachi here because it's so fun for several reasons.

First off; Sasuke in this is like. Straight up a doppelganger of Izuna, just a few generations apart. They could be twins. Itachi, as I'm sure you are aware, is Sasuke's big brother. So let's take some liberties and say that Itachi could absoloutley pass as a blood sibling to Izuna and Madara.

He is however 12, so we're also going to say that the only people who get to make this connection is anyone who's seen the siblings when they were also at a similar age.

On top of that however he has the 'walking amalgamation of all the stereotypes of the main Uchiha house' so anyone who isn't blind will look at him and assume he's somewhere in the sphere of 'important main house person' tho who really knows how distant the relation may be exactly. No one !! That's who !!!

Second; He's the fucking clan heir!! What the fuck!! This bit would have the most impact after all the messy time travel reveals when things have settled down a bit, so it'll sit in the back pocket for a bit. Save it for some fun shaking up later down the line so we don't run out of all the fun reveals too fast and bore the readers, yk?

When it is brought up tho it'd be fun to maybe have some fucky Itachi and Madara mutual understandings of the way things work.

• So. Madara is like a bit of a scary bed time story to Uchiha children, right? Like. "Ooo make sure you don't get too obsessive or fall too deep into your grief and always stay loyal to the village or you'll end up just like Madara!!"

Something something Uchiha-Village relationships are tense as hell, something something Madara fucking over a lot of the clan with his whole. Everything., Something something scapegoat and old stories, something something 'people have probably been talking a lot more about how "god dammit this all started with Madara" in recent years.'

Now with that in mind let's take a look of what our time travelers think of Madara:

Itachi is a good Konoha soldier. Itachi (as has been very much fucking proven) would rather beat a possible problem before it even exists with a hammer till it dies an ugly bloody death than even RISK it blossoming into a proper problem. Itachi does not like Madara. Itachi personally, quietly thinks they should maybe wait till the village is formed then carefully arrange a little accident for him before he goes off the rails. He, even more quietly, maybe even thinks it would be a kindness. Allow him to be remembered well by the village instead of scorned.

Shisui I think is cautiously optimistic about him. He's the kind of guy who gives the benefit of the doubt, who weighs the options, risk and reward, but includes things like hope and compassion in his calculations. Yes, Madara was a uhh. Thing. That happened. But in every story his big blow up always come from one specific event; Izuna's death. So if they stop that from happening, wouldn't it secure both a better future for them and Madara? The history books never went into detail about Izuna, he doesn't know what he's like, but maybe his involvement in the future, on Konoha's side, could lead to even more profits for them long term. At the end of the day he's not against killing Madara (though to be clear, they are at first operating on trying to avoid all interactions with historical events and return home without touching things) but it'd be nice, to manage to get a happy ending for everyone. Unrealistic maybe, but nice.

Mmmm hear me out actually, maybe Shisui, after interacting with him a bit, finds that Madara reminds him of Itachi too. They definatley both have that "I would do unspeakable things to even dream of my loved just one more time" energy, if you know what I mean

Anyways; Kakashi and Tenzo are both neutral on Madara. Yes, they learned about how he betrayed the village when young just like everyone else, but they weren't getting the bed time stories and "do this and you'll end up just like him" warnings like the Uchiha's. They're possibly leaning into negative but are detached from the situation enough to just go "well he hasn't done it yet and his brother is still alive so he won't any time soon" and be done with it

• Now, on the the total opposite side of the spectrum you have Hashirama and Tobirama. People are brought up in Konoha to fucking IDOLIZE these guys. You can not tell me our team of time travelers wouldn't be at least a little awed to speak with them.

I think Tenzo would be the most wide eyed about Hashirama, both for the baseline "holy shit that's the Shodai Hokage" and also that fun juicy mokuton user imposter syndrome he has going on for him. That guys DNA is inside his body!!! Holy shit wait does that mean if someone did a blood relation test with them he might read as being related to him?? Fuck were gonna pocket that for now but like. Mmmmm potential.

I'd say Itachi is the most hesitant about Tobirama but again, village loyalist, so.

You know what tho maybe Shisui is the most hesitant about him (though still largely positive) he both def grew up looking up to him but can also see the anti-Uchiha policies people inact now with the implications that Tobirama would have approved of it. He doesn't know if he would, but like, he has to wonder.

Kakashi is probably the most normal about them (and also has experience in being close to a hokage (Minato) to know that at the end of the day they are painfully human) Don't get me wrong, he's still in some sort of awe! He might get a little lightheaded at the thought of seeing the God of Shinobi in proper battle, or the possibility to see the famed genius of Tobirama with all the different jutsu's he's invented. You can't tell me Kakashi didn't spend a little extra time reading about him when he was trying to make Chidori. Honestly I'm gonna roll with that and say he had a bit of a phase as a kid where he was a total fan boy. Maybe sprinkle in the good old HalfHatake!Tobirama hc to add some faint daydreams a lonley babykashi had after his father's death, about getting to meet him as family. Like cmon, little genius idolizing and projecting on some big history figure only to find out they're actually related? Can you say potential?

Anyways he did eventually grow out of the phase, probably got unattached to it all and lost interest after the whole "losing everything he loved" bit of his life. And at the end of the day, he doesn't have any real complex personal hang ups on the founders like the others do. Thus, most normal.

• And then my favorite most special boy, Izuna !! He's for sure the one they're all most neutral about. He's not actually taught about in the academy? There's probably some throw away line about him in some history books somewhere, but he died young and was quickly buried by the looming shadow of Konoha. The only real knowledge had about him in modern times is just a vague "Yeah he got killed by Tobirama which lead to peace being made but also lead to Madara losing his shit"

Poor Izuna he's the linchpin for it all but was left an unremarkable footnote of history. My boy deserves so much better

Tenzo doesn't actually even know who he is, that boy got bare minimum education under Danzo and Izuna was NOT included.

Itachi and Shisui mmmaybe have some small little fun fact here or there buried in stories from the older members of the clans but like. It's gonna amount to just "yeah he had a great katon" and thats about it.

I WILL SAY HOWEVER. Itachi sees him and instantly is that one PTSD dog meme. Sasuke is a BABY but holy shit Izuna looks exactly like he'd expect him to grow up as and it's making him FEEL THINGS. Also he's so bratty little brother coded !! He's an entire 7 years older than Itachi but Ifachi keeps fucking up and trying to big brother him it's embaressing.

And ofc Itachi didn't go into the first meeting thinking he'd see some weird older mirror version of his beloved baby brother who he misses and worries about very very much. So like. There's for sure going to be some conflict there. If their first meeting is a scuffle (which it probably will be) I think Itachi would keep hesitating to attack. On full run away mode. Which is probably for the best bc he shouldn't try to fight Izuna anyways honey he's like double your bodyweight and you're strong but you aren't THAT strong.

• Pointing back at both the 'Itachi does not like Madara and has quiet thoughts about how it'd possibly be in everyone's interest to just kill him' and the 'Itachi and Madara quietly bond over being clain head/heir during stressful times (w pressure from the elders especially)

I can see 2 outcomes of a potential bonding conversation with them:

1) They come to understand eachother better.

Madara wants to be on good terms, he looks at this kid and sees one of his brothers eyes and the others quiet determination. He can tell Itachi doesn't like him for some reason, and it's frustrating because he doesn't know why. He wants him to like him. He wants to be able to offer his hand and have it taken. It hurts, to be looked at with such suspicion from a face that has traces of Izuna's.

Meanwhile Itachi . . . Itachi looks at Madara and he sees someone who gets it. Gets it like no one ever has. It scares him. He looks up at this man, this horror story he's been told to fear becoming, and he sees himself. And this realization shakes him. It makes him think, makes him wonder. He's so, so sure of his loyalty to Konoha. More sure than he is of anything else in the world. But . . . But if something happened to Sasuke, if he had to choose—

And maybe it softens something in him too, along with the (honestly healthy) dose of fear. It forms a little crack in his shell, just enough to maybe, maybe let Madara through. Just a hair.

Or 2) we pull one of those "The conversation ends with them agreeing verbally but mentally they're on 2 VERY different notes."

Madara, nodding and looking at Itachi meaningfully: "Yeah it can be hard, but all we can really do is try to make the world a safer place for the ones we love. (To create Konoha, to keep my clan safe. Izuna safe. And now to keep you safe too.)

Itachi, nodding slowly: "Yeah. No matter how hard it is (even though I think I understand you more than anyone else Ive ever met) we have to try to make the world a safer place (by killing you in your sleep once Konoha is formed) for the ones we love (My clan. My village. Sasuke.)"

• Also pointing back at the 'Hatake warring clan era reputation,' the 'Tobirama is half Hatake' and also now pointing at Tobirama's title as the White Demon. Small thing but it'd be neat if there was some small throw away line that the nickname lowkey started in part because of the absoloutley terrifying reputation of the Hatake combined with Tobirama's own Everything(tm) like it just had some influence on how some view him. Give me Uchiha's making dog jokes ab him it'll be funny

• Ok but now the actual plot thoughts. Yeah I know I kept you waiting sorry about that.

So time travel! Probably due to a mission gone wrong. Some ruins or some ancient crumbling scroll that wasn't even supposed to do fucking time travel but was so old and corroded that it somehow managed to transform into a whole other seal by pure bad luck. Or good luck I guess, considering it could have just turned into a nuke.

Our favorite team of disasters are very very alarmed !!! What the fuck !!! Obviously they don't default to thinking time travel, but they immediatley know something is wrong. The landscape has changed, though the big landmarks are still there. The mission was complete anyways with no injuries so they just retreat to Konoha. Only oops !! It's not fucking there!!!

Queue alarm.

Shisui is the first one to suggest time travel because he's quirky like that. And there's a very easy way to confirm this theory.

(Also we're going to say that Konoha's location is a valley a few miles out from the Naka River that borders the Senju / Uchiha territories.)

This is convenient because that verification method involves checking in on where Itachi and Shisui know the old Uchiha compound should rest.

They do it in full stealth mode, the second they saw Konoha was missing Kakashi as team leader decided they'd treat the land as enemy territory. They all agreed ofc, for all they knew this WAS enemy territory now.

And, ofc, yeah!! There's the old Uchiha compound!! Being active!!! There are people there!!!

"What are the odds Fugaku-sama decided to have the clan return to their homeland for ahh, cultural enrichment?" Kakashi asked weakly.

"Time travel." Was the only reply he got from Shisui, whispered reverently as the boy vibrated with excitement on the branch.

Itachi just gave him a look, radiating a level of dissaproving disbelief that no normal 12 year old should be able to make. Kakashi would know, he was that not-normal 12 year old once.

From there they decide a no interference policy. Hands off guys!! They probably debate it tho, like, a good amount. They all have ✨️opinions✨️ except maybe Tenzo who's lowkey still in the middle of trying to learn how to be a person and is following Kakashi's lead 99% of the time. Especially since they're still in mission mode and this is like a super serious discussion and he really does know the least ab the founders overall.

They probably debate the merits of going to Uzushiogakure bc seal help but it's really far and they don't actually have like, just any leverage with them. They already decided not to fuck with the future so it isn't like they can trade secrets and warnings. At least if shit happens here they have some plausible deniability, being, yk, 2 uchiha's and a senju-passing guy with Mokuton. Kakashi's kinda fucked tho in that regard but he isn't going to be doing the party ANY favors with his clan heritage.

Which means it's time to potentially get desperate enough to interact with Tobirama !!! Which will inevitably lead to them bumping into a Uchiha patrol or something!!! I don't know honestly

• Anyways want Hashirama and Tenzo to interact. He has so many issues like holy shit. Let Hashirama give him the hug he deserves. I want him to violently adopt him. New brother acquired!!!

I said before but Tenzo is still reprogramming from ROOT. Let Hashirama impact that! Let him help! They can make flower crowns and photosynthesize together idk

Hashirama would be so happy to have another mokuton user, I think they should be able to sense eachother extra strong and like 'ping' off of eachothers chakra, it'll be fun

But for this fic specifically I'm ranking the founders and Team Ro, weakest to strongest (in a clean, fair fight head on w no time to prepare) :

Itachi (he's fucking 12 guys. But also he is like. FRACTIONS under Tenzo and Shisui. If he were 13 I'd let him be above or at the same level but like. He's 12. Cmon.)

Tenzo - Shisui (they're like JUST under the next 2 tho like seconds behind)

Izuna - Tobirama

Kakashi ( by the skin of his fucking teeth and the advantage that is his stupid amount of jutsu's and lack of self preservation)

Madara - Hashirama

And again that's not counting like. The specific situations, time given to prepare, potential dirty tricks they could play (I think the Konoha tricks would play a fraction dirtier than the others, who are slightly more used to big open battles vs the ANBU squad who does all sorts of shit in all sorts of places) plus like. Mental state and team ups.

Tenzo or Shisui couldn't take down Izuna or Tobirama but if they teamed up I'd allow it. Kakashi would get his ass kicked by Hashirama or Madara but he could survive a minutes longer than the others would

I love him and he is terrifyingly competent but he won't win 1 on 1 with anyone unless he has some sort of advantage. Minus Shisui and Tenzo who he does have the advantage of regularly fighting, so.

• I think they do get to go back home in the end. It takes a ton of work tho and they probably do need to get Mito's help with it, Kakashi can show them the seal they got brought here with but it's an ACTUAL one in a trillion miracle it didn't fucking atomize them. So it needs a lot of touch ups

sai had that one, as well. for so long, his identity revolved strictly as the painter. he hadn't minded it. it wasn't as if ROOT was particularly needful of names. there were no group outings to be had, neither encouraging group activities which may require a proper use of it. only recently had sai been indulged in series in a BBQ dinner with some of the konoha eleven.

they were certainly rowdy, and loud, and mischievous. always truicking someone or other for one more round of drinks. sai couldn't admit it then, but he had liked the encounter very much. he wonders how danzō-sama would've retaliated to this new discovery. no, sai already knows. he would have dismissed it nothing but childishness. a waste of time.

perhaps he was right. well — sai had enjoyed it anyway.

he rubs the back of his neck awkwardly at the subject that sai brings up. kakashi's not sure if sai knows kakashi's own history with root ( or even tenzō's , for that matter. his kōhai has probably told sai , but it's just as likely that he didn't. not just because of the bad memories , but because they weren't quite sure still how far sai's indoctrination lie. ) , but this line of inquiry couldn't have come from nowhere.

although , technically , it was a secret that kakashi had been an anbu , let alone an anbu captain. unofficially , it had been one of the worst kept secrets ever. after all , it would have been near impossible for a ninja of kakashi's pedigree to disappear into the ranks of anbu the same way other shinobi could , and he wouldn't have put it past danzō to give sai a dossier on the team he was going to join , whether or not kakashi himself had been briefly indisposed.

' maa , sort of. ' he scratches the back of his neck , a habit he had faked until it turned real. ' we're given codenames just as those from root are , but many anbu have families and friends outside of the anbu ranks that allow them to stay in touch with their real names. ' unlike those in root , is the unspoken sentiment. ' most don't erase themselves as completely as those in root do. '

Little hc I have that makes me kick my feet and giggle is everyone assuming Kakashi and Iruka dislike one another but in fact they're pretty good friends so if you try to shittalk one of them to the other one as a bonding thing you will be in for such a rude awakening buddy it is the quickest way to make them despise you

You try and joke with Kakashi about Iruka being a rude shit who doesn't know his place and you're getting an ANBU level "come again?" dark glare. Try and go to Iruka to complain about Kakashi's reputation or weird habits and he might just break your wrist. Etc etc

Could I maybe get a lil hurt/comfort ((scenario or HC whichever you're feeling!)) situation where ANBU Kakashi comes home from a rough mission in the dead of night and all he wants to do is be held/cuddled by reader, but he doesn't feel like he deserves her comfort :( maybe reader wakes up to find Kakashi, still in his mask, watching her from the shadows of their room and knows exactly what he needs and is determined to be there for him because even if he doesn't think he deserves it she knows he does ❤️‍🩹

Damn, I think, Kakashi has a lot of baggage and most of that is full of self-loathing. It kinda hurt to just think about it because he deserves a happy end just like everybody else D:

Kakashi comes home after a rough mission and thinks he doesn't deserve Reader

It was one of those nights. Kakashi was away on a mission, he had departed a week ago and you waited anxiously everyday for him to return. When he came by before departion, Kakashi had said, he would only need a few days. A few days were in his and your book not even a week. So you rightfully began to worry, after all missions weren't typically difficult for him but rather tedious. Sleep evaded you a lot. You were used to Kakashi's scent and his warmth around you. Even though he never woke you up when he had nightmares, you noticed it, simply because he moved out of the bed, leaving you cold and alone. It was like a sixth sense.

Maybe that was the only reason you woke up one night after falling asleep just before midnight. Your eyes were heavy with sleep and with a small sigh, you turned over, drawing your blanket up to your shoulder to settle down again. But somehow sleep evaded you still and that wasn't typical for you. With a bigger sigh, you turned on your back, staring with tired eyes up to the ceiling. It took you some minutes until you sat up, scrunching into yourself. When you raised your head, you noticed a figure sitting in the corner of your bedroom. The moonlight illuminated the room, showing the silver hair of that person. "Kakashi? What are you doing there and how long are you back?", your voice was just as heavy with sleep as your eyes were but the smile couldn't held back. "Go back to sleep.", was the murmured answer. Frowning, your smile disappeared. You cocked your head to the side before you threw your blanket to the side, shivering as the cold air hit your naked skin. With quick steps, you simply climbed on top of Kakashi's lap. Instinctively he held you up on your waist, steadying you.

His eyes were drawn, full of despair and pain. Your eyebrows drew together. "You shouldn't be near me. I don't deserve you." His voice was full of pain and self-loathing. Tears threatened to fill your eyes but right now it wasn't your place to feel bad. Kakashi needed your comfort and safety. "Your mission went bad, right?", you ignored his words which were not even true. Instead of an answer, Kakashi simply nodded before leaning his head down and placing it against your neck. "You should go while you can.", his voice became heavier, cracking at the end. Not long and the first tears would fall. But you would be there to catch them. "You know, I will never leave. You deserve me because you are the best that ever happened to me." Silent tears socked your thin shirt and moistened your skin underneath. Slowly you stroked through his beautiful soft hair as you pulled his head closer to you, basking him with your warmth and love.
