I thought foals are also usually born front-first?
I suppose the front womb could actually just hold the placenta?? But that seems like a bad arrangement, due to the length of the cord to the fetus.
Obviously the most sensical option is that she only has the hindmost reproductive organs at all. And also that the pregnancy aspect is doylistically exaggerated in both halves and she would not be nearly as swollen when seen in person.
Also man is it just me or are her middle shoulders also rather sunken and weirdly slim? Having a horse's shoulder girdle to pass through should Help with the human pelvis problem, but instead it looks even more awkward.
With the conveyor belt proposition I had assumed that only frontal insemination was possible (probably with a somewhat more diagonal or horizontal passage, or else a more flexible reciprocal organ, @ whoever it was that was saying there would be positional/leverage problems), that a new pregnancy would only be possible once the previous baby was moved down, that the time that it takes to finish the upper gestation was at least as long if not longer than the period that the lower gestation takes, and that it was NOT a build-a-bear situation but instead both halves are fully wedded and grow at the same rate, but GOSH do some of y'all have horrible ideas/complications to add.
For the person who mentioned breathing issues due to such small nostrils, I concur. Could one maybe ameliorate it somewhat by separating the respiratory track into left and right pipes meeting at the deepest point and using the dual sets of lungs as bellows to create a more constant flow of air in one direction rather than the in-out motion that we use, similar to the heart? The nostrils themselves will still be rather small, especially when performing vigorous activity, and holding her breath might not be so much of a thing... but at least you would get ~twice as much air as you would otherwise, and there would be a reason to have two sets of lungs then, when otherwise you'd maybe just want to bypass the human torso altogether and reserve that for idk just the stomach and meat/fruit digestive bits I suppose.
Unless the upper swelling is in fact simply her lungs working as intended and filling the entire upper torso and expanding on inhale an amount that we only see as absurd due to our earth-centrism... I think that would be plenty large enough to accommodate her full body, and would avoid the back strain that that much solid tissue would have on her poorly designed vertical human spine.
Hmm, and if we do that we might as well go full xeno and take the most of the weird drawing, assuming that her spine follows the path of the dress more; curve it forward a bit so it's not so right-angled, give her some muscle attachments so raising her torso up is possible...
Please forgive my shoulder and hip girdles. I do not know horse bone anatomy. She's still doing a weird pose, maybe stretching out her hindquarters and back a bit, but much more believable.
So with this biblically accurate centaur we have a more clearly evolved centaur too, from a hexapodal ancester that developed raptorial forelimbs like a praying mantis. The weight of her forehalf is more evenly distributed on a wide middle shoulder girdle, her nerves are less compressed by a sharp spine angle and there is clearly a great range of motion both forward and back since separated foreribs allow squishing the lungs higher to bend over. I don't know how the separated ribs will affect the foreshoulders and arms, but since a centaur isn't going to be climbing trees it's acceptable that she loses some arm strength with a loss of brachiation in her recent ancestry.
Really to make the distended gut make sense you could make a smooth line from the foreribs through below the stomach to connect to the gut. Then you have a streamlined shape that looks decent, even if not like an earthly/mythical centaur.
Behold!
A Cursed Image!
(I had to see this with mine own eyes and I feel compelled to inflict it upon all of you)

Dragon skeletal anatomical diagram because I love taking on projects I and only I will enjoy. The idea is they evolved from theropod dinosaurs. Don't ask me how a tetrapod developed 6 limbs, I don't have answers for you.
Paleoheads feel free to nitpick any anatomical minutia I might have gotten wrong, I'm so here for it.
Inspired but not strictly following the dragons in the Eragon series.
Footnotes below the cut:
Fig A:
Spent a good while debating how to differentiate the naming for the forelegs and the wings, since they are technically duplicates of the same structure. I settled for "anterior" for the legs and "posterior" for the wings, but I also considered M. for "manus" referring to the legs, and A. for "ala" for the wings. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
5. Dorsal Vertebrae 1-3 do not have dorsal spikes.
9. Dorsal spikes sprout from the spinous process and are surrounded by a kerotenous sheath. They become proportionally taller with age.
13. Anterior scapula is fused to the sternum and forms a ball-and-socket joint with the anterior humerus at the base.
14. Large keeled sternum for the attachment of flight muscles.
22. Posterior scapula is also fused to the sternum but the ball-and-socket joint is at the distal end.
36. The dracoid bone (or false finger) is a unique bone to dragons that I made up. It has a bony core and cartilaginous sheath. Inspired by the pteroid, a bone in pterosaurs, which also supports the wing membrane, but in a different location.
Fig B:
Dragons have anywhere from 46-54 teeth, but will always have 10 premaxillary teeth, four maxillary fangs (two on each side), 8 pre-fang dentary teeth, and 2 dentary fangs. The fangs slot into each other for gripping prey. Teeth are named after the bone they grow out of. Like other theropod dinosaurs, teeth are regrown throughout an individual's life.
1. Cross section of maxillary fang. Fangs are laterally compressed like blades for piercing and shearing off flesh.
4. Dragons have two maxillary fangs, with the first one being larger and visible when the mouth is closed. This "snaggle tooth" gets proportionally longer each time it regrows.
5. All dragon teeth have serrations.
6. Like T-Rex and other theropods, premaxillary teeth (and pre-fang dentary teeth) have a D-shaped cross section for delicately picking flesh from bones. Serrations are on the lateral sides and not anterior-posterior, like the fangs and post-fang teeth.
Fig C:
4. Dragons have proportionally enormous nostrils due to the high oxygen demands of flight.
8. The antoribital fenestra (and other openings in the skull) are very large in dragons to reduce the weight of the skull. This makes flight easier at the expense of bite force. While still capable of a formidable bite, it is no where near the power of a T-rex.
10. Large lacrimal bone gives the dragons their characteristic brows, and provides support for large lacrimal osteoderms.
11. Dragons have proportionally enormous eyes and excellent long-distance binocular vision.
14. Dragons horns are modified growths from the parietal bone, and thus called parietal horns. The supratemporal fenestra (holes most theropods have on the top/back of the skull) in dragons has closed to provide support for the parietal horns.
15. The parietal horn forms a bony core with a kerotenous sheath, much like their dorsal spikes (and goat horns). Grows continuously with age.
Thanks for reading!

I love this little comment you can get from Emmrich post becoming a lich, because I assume he's talking about knowing what a heart looks like and how big it is due to. Y'know. Seeing his own or something similar during the rites.
But in Amaris's canon, one of the things I decided on that he was like specifically talented in/had a knack for is anatomical diagramming, both skeletal and muscular (which is part of why he has the full body skeletal scarification - he drew the design himself.) So he'd hear Emmrich say this and immediately be like "Let me see that I need to critique it for myself" and they both proceed to hash out the details and corrections together like the huge freaks they are <3
#dragon age the veilguard#emmrich volkarin#rook ingellvar#amaris ingellvar#i think a lot about the art culture of the mourn watch and nevarra so i feel like being particularly good at anatomical diagramming -#- is something that amaris would be encouraged to foster during his schooling. and he actually Enjoys doing it too#i would assume most watchers need to have a basic knowledge of how to note those things but he's like Insanely detailed about it#and just has honed his skills so its kinda stylized to be his own thing while still being scholarly and readable#i know the game assumes that rook wasnt very high in the watcher order but i think giving amaris something he still excels at even if hes -#- not a superior or higher up adds to things#kief.txt

I don't know what kind of drugs Rose-Engine put on this particular design, because holy shit I've never been this enthralled by a character before.
#There's something about her bigness and general shape that brings me so much joy#...Expect her legs from the side view. What the hell was that#But yeah I really like how she isn't as... Curvy? Shaped?? As the other replikas#I just think it's really good for a robot girl to be kinda bulky y'know?#I would DIE for an in-depth anatomical/mechanism diagram of this particular unit type as well as the sapr#Like. What does the K on their backs stand for? Why the handles on her head???#Like I even started researching how hydraulic machines and irl animatronics work because of this single fictional robot girl#And yeah there's also their personalities and such ofc. But that's for another day#idk what I'm talking about anymore. Sorry for the yapping#signalis#mnhr#mynah signalis

"GLITCHY" RED TAJIRI
Height: 6'2 Pronouns: He/It Home Region: Kanto Team: ????????, ??????, ?????????, ??????, ???????, ?????????
A disheveled man in a twisted realm who claims to be Red- yes, THE Red, despite bearing no resemblance in appearance or personality. He somehow seems to possess knowledge of things he shouldn't know, and an unnerving ability to do that which should be impossible. His body appears unstable, and though the same could be said of his behaviors... the odd man acts and talks as if he's an old friend of yours, and always seems relaxed around you- showing off his loud and passionate personality, and always bearing a Cheshire grin.
[Transcription of design notes and color hex values under the cut.]
Hair: #181418
Skin: #fbf3ef (main) + #c6b7d2 (veins/eyebags, multiply) + #76658c (blush) + #4291fe (airbrush overlay)
Neck bruised and veiny.
Eyes: #ffffff (sclera) + #ffffff, #ff0d00 (iris, red and SMALL amount of white)
NO SHADING. Don't outline iris!
Bluish mouth natural. (#605173, #3b3049)
Alt: red (#ff0d00)
Glitches (red/yellow/white) always visible on body, NOT CLOTHES. (Hidden for body ref)
How I do his glitches:
Use any method to make basic glitch effects of any color.
New clipping layer over glitches, set color layer effect. (Fill: #ff0d00)
Merge.
New clipping layer again, layer effect Hard Mix OR Color Burn Layer. Whichever looks best. (Fill: #ff0d00)
(If there's no #ffffff or #fff800, manually add lines and boxes to base layer of these colors.)
This should result in his distinct glitch colors of red/white/yellow/black.
Merge again
Clip onto glitched area (optional)
Set glitch layer as Glow Dodge-- or whatever gives the best looking effect. Pick with your heart!
Note for outfits:
If details like the back of a shirt or underside of shoes aren't specified, they're plain and colored like the front/top.
Shirt: #3c3942
Belt: #0e0e10 + #ecedf1
Pants: #687998, #9fabc2 (airbrush for fade)
Shoes: #8e4a4f + #ffffff, #ebecf0, #d1d2d6, #8a8b90
Shoes are in AWFUL condition. In the image RED is where holes are- you'd normally see through them, done like this for contrast in reference.
Shirt, jacket: #3c3942, #25222b
Belt: #0e0e10 + #ecedf1
Vest, shoes, gloves: #8e4a4f + #ffffff, #ebecf0, #d1d2d6, #8a8b90

ALT PALETTE (only for this outfit)
Yo.
Look, I'm not here to dick around with a buncha cryptic bullshit. I'd like to think I'm a pretty open book, yknow-
I just think that hiding this one would be really fucking funny. Trust me- you'll find out soon.
A lot sooner than you'd think.
General Note:
Details of these forms can vary based on circumstance. This is more like examples and a style guides than a concrete reference- I've tried to note every key part for each.
Hue over Red's body, not over amalgam: #ff0d00
Skin: #fbf3ef (main) + #c6b7d2 (veins/eyebags, multiply) + #76658c (blush) + #4291fe (airbrush overlay)
Hair: #181418
Eyes: #ffffff, #ff0d00
NO Shading!
Don't outline iris! "Animalistic" look in eyes.
Blood stains, multiply #900700
Mouth: #ff0d00
Amalgamated parts can be parts of anything summonable with the Old Man Glitch, use one of these palettes:
1: #76658c, #181418, #c6b7d2, #c8afa3
2: #ff0d00, #181418, #ffffff, #ffff00
Glitching is far more extreme in this form.
Unobscured gore for reference:
Bones, Flesh: #ffffff, #ff0d00, #a50800 Heart: #bd1a2a Liver: #5c1612 Spleen: #942f53 Intestines: #C6a88f, #d4ac96, #dabdac Pancreas: #c8b26c Diaphragm: #efdcdc Throat: #efdcdc, #c2a5b0 Lungs: #dc9ea3, #b16c72 Stomach: #d4ac96

sorry if you’ve already answered this but how did you tackle studying anatomy ? Did you just practice and practice different references and stuff ?
Personally ya. For me it was most useful to study references and then do loose gesture drawings. Doing studies of references is nice, but gesture drawings really put to the test if u understood what u have been studying. It has helped me to see if I can put studying into practice by making artistic, loose interpretations that still make sense while having flow and style lol
#ask hedge#I don’t think everything needs to make perfect anatomical sense#but u can see when someone doesn’t yet have a grasp of fundamentals of how a body works#and slightly veering off#I don’t understand why people do studies of exposed muscles etc#like super detailed diagrams

Would you ever think of doing something deconstructing harpy anatomy (the big boy harpies)? I'm one of those guys who looooves seeing the skeleton and organs and stuff of theoretical species, and you did something touching on that in your paid pdf (Which I adore the sketches in and would buy the shit out if you had more.)
But also I know that kind of detail is not every artists joy to draw haha, so I'm just throwing it out there.
Ahh i was about to post the diagrams from the pdf (LINE from my shop btw) but then kept reading the ask and saw you mentioned them already
Yeah it's 100% something I wanna do, only yesterday I was thinking I needed to redraw the diagram with my better understanding of birdy anatomy and also the different facial features my harpies have now. Ultimately they're just birds with odd faces, they don't have hands (I struggled with the hand question. So much. But settling on the backstory and world history pushed me into the no hands camp, that seems like a definite punishment for people accustomed to opposable thumbs). The skull would be really interesting to draw I feel, especially some transitional stages between regular harpy and king harpy 👀
Bearing in mind that I've been historically terrible at following through on promises I can't guarantee I'll get this done but it is something I want to do and honestly yeah, it would be a joy to draw
