This is a bit more of a personal post, and maybe a bit out of the scope of this blog, but it's been something bothering me a fair bit in lefty spaces.
Also, odds are this has been hashed out before, and in much easier to understand terms.
Anarchists need to stop being liberals.
For context, I would describe myself as an anarchist, so understand that these critiques come from a place of love rather than destructive ranting. As well as this, I live on the british isles, and the left-wing scene here is well and truly pacified. I might winge about this more in the future..
As a side note, "anarchist" isn't a particularly useful term anyway, because it refers to a broad group of philosophies concerned with a critique of power, and each one of those philosophies can vary WILDLY.
Also, by "liberal" I am refering to an advocate of free-enterprise, free-markets, and private property.
There is a concept known as "political prefiguration", which broadly refers to ways of organising that reflect the future society that you wish to build. Do you want a future non-hierarchical society? Then you have to literally act as if you were in one. And the more you do, the better you get at it, and the more you understand how to develop through it.
So often I see so-called anarchists talking about owning a business and hiring employees. And sure, if you're the kind of anarchist that either doesn't understand what capitalism is, or you don't see it as an issue, then sure, whatever. But IMO you can hardly call yourself an anarchist when you own employees? You are putting yourself in an unnecessary position of power over them. And you will only ever learn how to exercise that power over them.
Additionally, I hear so-called anarchists come out with "I'll just wait for someone to tell me what to do." And again, you will only ever learn how to follow orders and take instruction. You will never learn to think for yourself. You'll never know how to work with others. You have to step forward and say "I want this" and you work with your comrades to figure out how to get it.
And I get it. I really do. The society we live in really doesn't teach us anything useful, and if it did, it would cease to exist as it does. And there isn't any easy way to survive in this world without exploiting someone, even if it is several degrees separated. But you need and have to try.
Talk to people in your communities, be that where you live, where you work, where you learn, or where you play. Pick an issue people care about. Work together to figure out how to fix it. And then do it.
And sure, I am making that seem easy. And believe me, it is not. But the first step is to try. PLEASE.

scout and juniper are the beloveds!! what are their pronouns? how did they end up orphans? did they have a drift at some point and do they remember them at all? do they have a caretaker they go to more than the other? who do they each take after more? what do they refer to dream and techno as? what do they refer to the rest of the anarchsit commune as? are they friends with michael??
(feel free to answer as many or as few of these as you want :) thank you for sharing your wonderful au with us!)
they're toddlers so they don't super care yet but juniper uses she/her and scout use they/them!
in the aftermath of dream and techno fleeing through the nether, trying to gather supplies, it sets off a bit of chain ghast reaction. players hanging around the nether for too long has that effect. i haven't completely thought it out but i'm thinking ghast explosions, maybe deflected, ends up hitting a hunting party that was out hunting for hoglins. in that mess, the twins end up losing their caretakers and while dream is like 'techno we have GOT to go', techno is just 'and leave the babies man???' and dream wants to argue, he does, but he can't. he knows techno and he knows himself.
as for who they go to more, it kinda depends on the point in time. this is my only au that doesn't start post-prison but the prison does happen as does the torture, it's just not as long. like juniper at first is so attached to dream. she thinks he's cool and wants to be like him! and that doesn't really change after the prison, it's just that she doesn't exactly know how to approach him. he's quieter and jumpy and hurt and she's just a baby who is kinda loud and clumsy but she's tough! and techno can help her learn how to use that.
scout, at first, goes to techno more often. even though techno is really big and kinda scary, he immediately picks up on their awkwardness and does his best to make them comfortable. techno tells stories and scout loves stories! they're a very empathetic baby. and so after the prison, they know dream is different and so they do the baby babble in their softest baby voice, telling him a story and sitting on his lap because that's what techno does when they're scared and it helps so that's what scout does.
as for what they call dream and techno, their actual names are a bit too much for toddlers who are just getting a grasp on language and like all young kids, just tend to call their caretakers something easy. so dream gets 'didi' and techno gets 'zaza' because Ts are hard. they don't fall into any sort of traditional roles, honestly. they're quite literally just two friends taking care of some babies, y'know?
everyone else at the commune just gets referred to by techno as either 'uncle' or 'aunt' except for phil who gets 'grandpa' so the twins just call him 'gaga'.
and one day they will be friends! i just haven't decided exactly on how it happens.

STATION TO STATION
"Dance, dance, yeah ! Dance baby, shake your body..."
Le nouveau souffle triphop-rock, made in Glasgow !
Bien sûr, ce genre musical n'a jamais cessé d'exister, au Royaume Uni. Radiohead, Keane, Muse...
— Oui.
— Passe me voir demain matin.
— Pourquoi nous ? Pourquoi maintenant ?

yeah i definitely agree with all your points !! i knew about the neo-tech thing going in, i guess i just didn't expect it to piss me off this much.
my problem is precisely with both 1) lonnie being a bit of a hypocrite and 2) never being able to critique batman too much because it's, well, his universe.
about lonnie being a bit of a hypocrite, it's so true lmao. or at least he's definitely not the vibe im used to in an anarchist. it's strange that Grant made him a vigilante on a solo quest, with little ties to an anarchist group helping him organize his actions, or working with him in general. i understand why though, the superhero genre sort of demands that obsession with 'individual characters', and a lack of horizontality, so to speak. plus anarky is heavily inspired by the other sort-of-controversial-anarchsit V, so I'm not surprised.
and about the bruce thing. yeah that pisses me off the most. I think in general a lot of storytelling potential is wasted in batman comics because they can't let anyone who's not s villain oppose bruce for more than 3 seconds. im just upset that the concept of an anarchist character in superhero comics was this limited by the genre it was in.
but in general my og post is more about complaining about how Grant got the chance to write an anarchist vigilante in superhero comics and screwed it up this badly in terms of what your average anarchist actually opposes. it's 100% an emotional rant.
this is a crazy thing to have lonnie say when
no company based on wage labor is 'ethical' for a socialist, it'd have to be a co-op. and even then im not sure an anarchist would like a conglomerate born out of late stage capitalism.
hasn't wayne enterprises sold ships and jets to the us military before? what I'm not sure about is when in canon this was stated, and if it was before lonnie's creation. im calling for the community's help with this one.
i dunno why they try so hard to have lonnie like bruce. in what world does an anarchist think a CEO's conglomerate is ethical. i know im nitpicking, but i can't stop thinking about the cop out this is, because here a business is considered 'ethical' because of how it is run, instead of considering the structure of capitalism as unethical in itself. anarchism has never been about running the system ethically from the inside, it's been about dismantling it entirely. how did grant miss that.
in conclusion:
#I suppose lonnie doesn't need to be your average anarchist — if such a thing even exists — and all this ideological incoherence#helps to add character to him. and remind the fact that he was a teenager too#it's just hard to know when his incoherences are on purpose amd when it's just alan grant being a bit full of it#anarky tag

William Godwin; was not only the father of Mary Shelley but also the first anarchist. The term anarchy which is now associated with Mohawks, wearing black and generally not liking government has it’s roots in Godwin’s book “Enquiry concerning Politcal Justice, and it’s influence on General Virtue and Happiness”. This was the first publication where the idea of an anarchsit state could actually be functional.
However much of his work became associated with the more extreme and violent individuals of the French Revolution, which tainted his intellectual reputation and forced him to live much of his later life in secrecy.
