Possible TWs if I get there: domestic assault, sexual assault, corpses
I've been trying to conjure what to write about Shadow the Series since I binged it last week. It seems tenuous to make any guesses about this show, since each episode does it what needs to do, and adds information that colors and has me questioning any theories I'm coming up with. Instead, I'm just going to meditate on a couple of bits that are sticking with me, and questions that I have about references the show may be making. Full disclosure: I have NOT spent enough time searching for meta in the tag, so my apologies if I'm repeating anything that's already been written.
1) The scene in episode 3 with the monk had me thinking a lot. In reference to an unrelated conversation with @lurkingshan, the legend of the story of villagers sending dead bodies floating down a river as sacrifices to local wild ghosts -- and the timing of the Catholic school being built after World War II -- had me thinking if, within that legend, there were any references to the building of the Burma-Siam Railway, also known as the Death Railway. I rewatched that scene yesterday, and noted that the referenced dead bodies were not necessarily attributed as being of the village in which the monk is from.
I'm extrapolating: taking into consideration that memories of assault or trauma among children are often dissociated into stories (think Life of Pi), the same will often go for local legends of attack and war. Again, I'm extrapolating, but I think it's interesting to note that this school was built on otherwise venerable grounds, meaningful to the local villagers, and that ghosts considered inhabitants of this area began to rebel against not being worshipped.
Catholic schools in Southeast Asia were already plentiful before WWII due to colonialism; in fact, a Catholic school built AFTER WWII would be relatively new, as compared to schools built before and at the turn of the 20th century. I wonder what it meant that that school was only built after the war.
2) I very much appreciate that Dan never lacks a critical eye or question. He heard from the monk that he should use his dream ring to bring him back to reality; but also, that staying in the dream realm for too long would expose him to "things he shouldn't know" (I'm paraphrasing). And Dan asks why.
Dan's someone who questions, and who lets other people who that he's going to question.
I appreciate that while the set-up of Dan's exposure to the Buddhism of the monk seemed like a reprieve from the weird-ass vibe of the Catholic school -- that Dan didn't fall into the mindset that what he was experiencing at the temple was necessarily "a" or "the" right path. The monk still told him -- as so much of Christianity tells Christians -- to not question certain things, which is out of the possibility of Dan's internal philosophy to find answers.
3) A priest using hypnosis. SMDH. "Feelings aren't reality"? Biatch. I got shivers when Anurak popped out the Rorshach drawings.
4) I mentioned this to a few other folks, but it's definitely giving me the jibbles that Nai seems okay with Dan taking the fall (multiple times) for Nai's revenge scheme against Anan. Without intervention, the oppressed will oppress.
5) Episodes 6 and 7 did not seem as tight as the earlier episodes; it seemed to me that the show, as it continues, is holding a lot of stuff, and will need to unwind on this stuff as we near conclusion. I'm hoping for a tight ending, but we'll see.
I have no theories on the shadow, except, again, many of those who have suffered trauma as children may experience dissociation. But I'm not going to offer that as a theory for conclusion -- it's far too early to make those conjectures. My tastes having me paying continued attention to the themes of Christianity living side-by-side with Asian traditions of religion, spirituality, and local/regional practice, and what it means to have your questioning sides shut down when one has questions about how these cultures co-exist, if at all. I see the clash of cultures especially as juxtaposed during the funerals of Dan's parents at the temple, with Anurak visiting both times.
This is a FANTASTIC show, and it's honestly a HUGE refresher to take a break from traditional BL to watch a queer thriller. I can see that Nai may be attracted to Dan, but I'm honestly so glad to not actively ship Fluke and Singto. They are SO GREAT in their roles, holding their own, and I would be perfectly happy with no couples at the end of this show -- this wouldn't be an element to an excellent ending that I need or that I'd ask for.

I saw you finished Shadow! Thoughts? Opinions? Feelings?
Oh my god, an incredible amount of emotions and thoughts.
So, from the first episode I could tell things weren’t gonna end well for Brother Anurak simply from the fact that the school is using Saint Lawrence of Rome as their patron saint. But the plot twist! It was in plain sight and I didn’t even notice nor fathom to question why he favored his right arm.
I think right now most of my thoughts center around the spectrophilia scenes with Dan and the idea of Catholic guilt. The thing about Catholic guilt is that even when you find yourself not truly a believer in the religion, the teachings are still instilled in you. Meaning, even as a nonbeliever, feelings of remorse and shame are not uncommon when going against the grain of the moral teachings that you’re surrounded with. So I can’t help but wonder whether Dan’s encounters with the Shadow is supposed to imply the suppression of his desires and fantasies? Is he struggling with his sexuality as well? Are his encounters with the Shadow supposed to demonstrate his eagerness to find an outlet for his forbidden desires? Even though Singto played Dan pretty straight-laced, I can’t help but wonder if the spectrophilic encounters are meant to blur the lines between the sacred and profane. Giving in and enjoying the shadow seems to dive in the direction that Dan is indulging in forbidden desires, which gay relationships have been categorized as such under the Roman Catholic Church. I mean even though Dan stated that he had been interested in Cha-aim, the suggestive drawings with Shadow seem to show his internal desire for the prohibited. Does this mean that the shadow taking Dan’s life becomes the ultimate consequence of repressing himself? I’m not sure.
Also, it’s pretty interesting that both Dan and Brother Anurak martyred themselves for no true change to occur, which parallels Saint Lawrence’s story.
I really liked the Catholicism vs Buddhism approach that was framed. Maybe it’s because I grew up with Catholicism that integrated and embraced pre-Hispanic traditions and faced push back for utilizing ‘witchcraft’, but there’s something so satisfactory over the Venerable Monk always the composed one of the two religious heads.
After that reveal in episode 14, I want a second season. I want further exploration of the forest spirit and whether Nai ever realizes the truth.
Also Nai was really badass targeting Anan like that. I also wanted more of the backstory from that angle. Prior to the confession, I could have sworn he had been interested as well, but then Anan did a whole 180 for the worst. Is it internalized homophobia? Did his dad beat him? Crazy to think that the charmer that Nai first met became a cold-blooded murderer…
I really want that second season.
There’s a lot more I can discuss, but it’s 2:30 a.m. and my brain is malfunctioning.

'70s Harajuku (Part 1)
The Harajuku district in Shibuya has gained international acclaim as a hub of Tokyo's youth culture and fashion scene. Its streets are lined with cafes, boutiques, and well-known fast fashion stores, drawing a constant stream of tourists, fashionistas, and teenagers. However, before the arrival of billionaire retailers, foreigners, and media attention, this area's early inhabitants were the ones who truly shaped its unique character.
Several factors contributed to Harajuku evolving into a valuable and fashionable destination. Firstly, its location, accessible via the Yamanote Line and situated within the Shibuya ward, played a pivotal role. The vicinity surrounding Shibuya Station, located about 1.3 km north, has been a focal point for youth culture since the 1950s. Moreover, Minato-Aoyama, which borders Omotesando Avenue, has been developed as a fashionable place since VAN made it a hub for Ivy fashion, scattering its boutiques and facilities around the area in the '60s.
Another noteworthy aspect is the absence of certain establishments like sex shops, dingy bars, pachinko parlors, cabaret clubs, and love hotels. This is due to the city's designation of the area as an Education District, owing to the presence of the Jingumae Elementary School. Consequently, Harajuku maintains a safer and considerably less seedy atmosphere than other popular fashion and entertainment districts like Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, and the central part of Shibuya.
Despite this, Harajuku didn't become a famous, trendy area overnight. For decades, the district remained a quiet residential neighborhood with minimal activity, except for the annual influx of New Year's Day visitors who assembled at the Meiji Shrine. Yet, one distinguishing feature would set it apart: its international vibe.
In 1947, the construction of the Washington Heights complex, a vast housing facility for the US Armed Forces, transformed the landscape, prompting the emergence of local shops catering to international families, exemplified by the enduring Kiddy Land toy store. Kiddy Land, which still thrives today, became a beloved destination for the children of American soldiers and was the first shop in Japan to offer Barbie dolls.
Route 5, the fashionable drive-in eatery, photographed in 1965.
In 1964, Japanese authorities took back control of the land occupied by Washington Heights. The government repurposed the area and built Olympic facilities and athlete accommodations, further fueling investments in Harajuku. By 1966, the local nightlife began flourishing, primarily due to affluent teenagers cruising the streets in flashy American sports cars. They were drawn to cosmopolitan restaurants that kept their doors open late into the night, with Route 5, a drive-in eatery, being a notable hotspot. Right across the street from Route 5 stood an Adventist church, contributing to the area's foreign allure.
Around that time, Harajuku garnered significant media attention with the completion of Olympia Co-Op, Japan's first luxury condominium development. But it was another residential building that shaped Harajuku's spirit...
Harajuku Central Apartments
Occupations like stylist, copywriter, designer, fashion photographer, and illustrator didn't gain recognition until the post-war period. They were referred to as the "katakana professions" due to their foreign origin and the fact their Japanese translations are loanwords, usually written in the Katakana syllabary. It wasn't until the 1980s, thanks to articles in magazines like AnAn and other fashion publications, that these professions became widely known among the Japanese public. However, starting in the '60s, more than a decade before becoming widespread, these creative individuals—already molding Japanese pop culture, fashion, and advertising—gathered in the Harajuku Central Apartments opposite the Jingumae crossing.
Central Apartments featured seven floors that accommodated offices, boutiques, and a café. The café that occupied part of the ground floor, Leon, achieved legendary status and was immortalized in fashion magazines as a meeting place for Japan's creative elite.

With the launch of magazines like AnAn, Non-no, and Popeye, which reported on Tokyo's fashionable districts, boutiques, and individuals, Harajuku gained recognition among trend-conscious individuals across Japan, and so did Leon, the trendiest coffee shop in Harajuku.
Unlike Chianti, the upscale Italian restaurant frequented by celebrities in the posh Nishiazabu area, Leon was accessible, unpretentious, and affordable. In fact, you could enjoy multiple cups of coffee for a fixed price, a rarity in Tokyo at the time. Nevertheless, its reputation as the haunt of Harajuku's most notable professionals made it an intimidating spot where few dared to venture.
The recurring theme in stories from young visitors to the area was, "I was just a kid from the countryside; there was no way I could summon the courage to enter." Even Tokyoites who weren't part of the inner circle kept their distance. However, Leon's large glass windows attracted the attention of passersby, who craned their necks and tried to catch a glimpse of celebrities and industry figures featured in magazines and on TV.

Inside Leon, despite its no-frills décor and menu, it felt like entering a new world where only the most stylish individuals were welcomed. Everyone in the café dressed in the latest European and American fashion trends, and the music playing was the latest hits from London, New York City, or California. Since the café also served as an office for its customers, you could overhear Japan's most prominent fashion, music, and advertising professionals openly discussing their latest projects and loudly taking calls on the venue's pink telephone.
While the coffee shop served as Central Apartment's meeting place, it wasn't its only commercial facility. Harajuku's first boutique, Madame Nonnon, by legendary designer Taro Aramaki, opened in the building in 1964. It sold casual Parisian fashion, and its border (stripped) shirts were a big trend. (Even today, striped shirts remain a cherished staple of Parisian casual style in Japan, with trend-conscious women often sourcing them from the British brand St. James.).
Madame Nonnon, considered by many as Japan's first boutique, shaped the exclusive aura of Central Apartments. Taro Aramaki was discerning in his clientele, only selling to those who matched the store's style. Prices were exceedingly high, and except for the striped shirts and a few select items, everything was either tailor-made or imported directly from Paris. Additionally, sizing was limited to XS, adding to the exclusivity.
Later, other retailers started occupying space in Harajuku Central Apartments, and the basement floor became a small shopping mall with stalls selling food and fashion items. But the biggest success story emerging out of the Central Apartments' shops is probably MILK.
The entrance of MILK's first boutique (left) and a glimpse inside Mademoiselle Nonnon, including its iconic border pieces, as part of an AnAn 1972 editorial (top right).
Under the direction of Hitomi Okawa, MILK initially sold women's clothes, mixing playfulness with the London punk aesthetic admired by the young designer. Eventually, the brand became a staple of Harajuku kawaii fashion with its girly designs and celebrity admirers. MILK influenced the rise of fashion tribes like the Gothic Lolitas and gained prominence, expanding nationwide. A men's line, MILKBOY, was launched in 1975.
MILK's flagship store is still in Harajuku, but not at Central Apartments. As a testament to how much the area has evolved and how things have drastically changed, the building met its demise in 1998. The place is now the site of the Tokyu Plaza shopping center. However, Harajuku owes a lot of its fashionable, creative cred to the existence of the legendary building, which brought some of the most avant-garde professionals to the area.
The Evolution of Harajuku
Harajuku has become so renowned that every facet of the district is well-known. There's Ura-Harajuku, the charming backstreets teeming with cafes and independent shops. There's the heart of Harajuku itself, which typically includes Cat Street and Takeshita Dori—lively thoroughfares packed with stores and food stalls catering to teenagers. You'll also find the bustling Meiji Dori and the iconic Jingumae Crossing, which doubles as the intersection of Omotesando. And, of course, there's Omotesando itself, the grand avenue lined with zelkova trees, home to the flagship stores of luxury brands that extend from the Meiji Shrine to the entrance of the stylish and equally lavish Aoyama-dori in the Minato ward.
In the '60s, however, there was no Ura-Harajuku, and Omotesando was just a tranquil and beautiful avenue with almost no buildings. Harajuku was a quiet, relaxing area of central Tokyo, catering mainly to its residents. While a few trend-savvy people gravitated towards the area due to its cosmopolitan air, it was a well-kept secret among them.
A fashionable girl walks in front of the Kiddy Land toy shop in Harajuku Kiddy Land in 1974/Alao Yokogi.
However, as the 1970s rolled in, AnAn magazine changed everything. The magazine frequently featured Harajuku alongside well-known Tokyo districts like Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Ginza. During this era, Harajuku hadn't yet embraced the youthful, inclusive vibrancy it enjoys today. Instead, it was an elegant adult enclave characterized by its upscale, intimidating boutiques, the accomplished creative professionals at Central Apartment, and the opulent Co-op Olympia and its wealthy residents.
After Mademoiselle Non-non, a wave of boutiques began to emerge. Model Mako opened the trendy MAKO BIS. London underground fashion, favored by the style-savvy, was available at Help and Suzuroku. Meanwhile, for those who preferred folk and boho-inspired garments, also trendy at the time, there was Violon and Hitotsume Kozou.
In 1970, BIGI, a women's ready-to-wear clothing brand founded by the husband and wife team of Takeo Kikuchi and Yoshie Inaba, opened its first store in Harajuku. Three years later, Rei Kawakubo inaugurated the first boutique of her now internationally renowned label, COMME des GARÇONS, in the same area. BIGI and COMME des GARÇONS, along with other brands created by emerging Japanese designers, set off the "DC Brand Boom," which would shape the domestic fashion scene in the following decade, a theme we will revisit later.
BEAMS, now one of Japan's largest retailers with stores nationwide, started in Harajuku in 1976 as a modest import store modeled after a UCLA dorm room. It quickly drew crowds searching for American brands featured in the MADE IN USA Catalog and Popeye magazine. During the same year, teenagers flocked to the neighborhood to shop at Cream Soda, a second-hand boutique known for its '50s-inspired rockabilly fashion, sparking a youth fashion craze. By 1977, a significant portion of Harajuku had been closed to vehicular traffic, transforming the area into what the Japanese refer to as a "pedestrian paradise." Stylish young people began congregating in the area to dance and flaunt their eye-catching outfits, mostly bought from the local Boutique Takenoko.
In 1978, a fashion building aimed at the youth market, LaForet Harajuku, opened at the Jingumae Crossing, just across from the Central Apartments. LaForet quickly gained fame as one of Tokyo's premier shopping destinations and continues to be a beloved fixture in the area today. Harajuku's transformation into a central hub for fashion was complete.

Bangladesh TV hires the country's 1st transgender news anchor
DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) - A Bangladeshi satellite television station has hired the country's first transgender news anchor, saying it hopes the appointment will help change society.
Tashnuva Anan Shishir,
Tashnuva Anan Shishir, who previously worked as a rights activist and actress, debuted on Dhaka-based Boishakhi TV on Monday, International Women's Day. She read a three-minute news bulletin, and after finishing cried as her colleagues applauded and cheered. “I was very nervous, I was feeling so much emotional, but I had in my mind that I must overcome this ordeal, this final test,” Shishir, 29, said in an interview Tuesday.
Born Kamal Hossain Shishir, she said she found in her early teens that she was stuck in a man's body and behaved like a woman. She said family members, relatives and neighbors started teasing her and she was bullied and sexually exploited. She started feeling that it was impossible to continue living and attempted suicide, she said.
The worst thing that happened was that her father stopped talking to her, saying she was the reason that her family was losing face, Shishir said. “I left home,” she said. She moved from her family's house in a southern coastal district to live a solitary life in the capital, where she underwent hormone therapy, worked for charities and acted with a local theater group. In January, she began studying public health at a Dhaka university, which she is continuing alongside her job at the TV station.
Bangladesh officially has more than 10,000 transgender people, but activists say the actual number is much higher. The LGBT community faces social isolation, sexual abuse and other forms of harassment. Finding employment is very difficult, and many live by begging or selling sex. Since 2013, the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has allowed transgender people to identify themselves as a separate gender. They were given voting rights in 2018.
Some changes are already visible. In November, a charity group opened Bangladesh's first Islamic school for the transgender community. Boishakhi TV said it wanted to be part of the changes and has hired a second transgender person in its drama department. “Our prime minister has taken many steps for the transgender people. Encouraged by such steps, we have appointed two transgender people, We want the attitude of society to change through these appointments, ”said Tipu Alam Milon, the station's deputy managing director.

BREAKING OVERNIGHT: Regional Outages in Cable and Power in Negros Oriental, was Blacked Out in Both Companies [#OneNETnewsInvestigates]
DUMAGUETE, NEGROS ORIENTAL -- From the slowdowns into an outage in the entire Negros Oriental area, our investigative research team of OneNETnews was compiling the timeline beginning this early weekend on Thursday to Saturday. We start this off in exact order, with a little help of our Radyo Patrol #2 reporter (Kimi Sparkle).
The in-charge person of SkyCable Office in Dumaguete, was told to OneNETnews; about the slow internet issue on SkyBroadband as of this Thursday afternoon at 3:15pm (Manila local time), there will be a disruptive noise interference from the entire system in all of it's local barangays of Dumaguete. These areas are affected including right here in our broadcast hometown of Brgy. Pulantubig, Brgy. Buñao and the other 2 Barangays. This resulted in a loose wire around later this Thursday night, is at the Villa Verde Subdivision; just a several meters before the Negros Oriental Montessori International School and the Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport.
He adds in Cebuano dialect, the interference level for the illegal invisible power noise is at 20dbMV. So, the SkyCable Dumaguete was sorting out the issue overnight. The next morning on Friday (as of 7:30am - Manila local time), an internet sweeper was now fixed and it's now normalized to start the working day on the internet.
And...
A double-featured blackout between the Unscheduled and Emergency Power Interruption straight from the NORECO II (Negros Oriental II Electric Cooperative) and the NGCP (National Grid Corporation of the Philippines), during the General Community Quarantine on a post-pandemic of CoViD19 (Coronavirus Disease-19) in Negros Oriental.
Tony Salvoro (Power 8 reporter of 91.7mhz DYGB-FM Power91FM Dumaguete) was recieved an exclusive copy of a latest advisory from the NGCP (National Grid Corporation of the Philippines) at the local Media Briefing during Tug-anan told OneNETnews... She says in Cebuano dialect during the Generator broadcasting without the power source of NORECO II as reported, all the entire town of Dumaguete... was temporarily blacked out unnoticed, due to it's heaviest rain in the early morning.
This happened as of 4:32am to 6:50am on Friday early morning (Manila local time), which is classified as unscheduled power interruption of NORECO II. The affected areas in parts of Negros Oriental are in Pulantubig, Bagacay, Dauin and Siaton Substation. The entire reason was caused due to it's tripping down by the Entangled Kite from the Amlan-Siaton 69kV line. NORECO II Line Patrol was now ongoing for the investigation, along with the rest of the affected lines.
But that's not all on the same early morning on Saturday this weekend... An emergency power service interruption was issued starting at 4am to 5am. But it was delayed to 75mins., which is now at 6:15am for the entire Negros Oriental island and us here in Dumaguete. The affected areas in Dumaguete City happens from Bagacay to Taclobo. Followed by the other places in Valencia, the Entire Area of Bacong (excluding Combado, Balayagmanok & Isugan) and the other Entire Area of Dauin, Zamboanguita & Siaton. Bagacay, Dauin & Siaton substations are affected. NORECO II was requesting an emergency shutdown of the NGCP (National Grid Corporation of the Philippines)'s Pulantubig-Siaton 69kV Line to work on a loose connection in Dauin substation that needs immediate action. This resulted a regular brownout almost automatically in the early morning today.
Internet Problems was probably new in a digital world today. Cable Internets are in for the top priority per ISP when you manage the internet subscription in this city and informing any issues such as slow, congested, traffic or blocked out in selected websites and the Cable Internet team tries to sort this out in under 1-2 business days or less. While the Blackout and Brownouts is a different story. This local events are based between the severe weather in Dumaguete City and/or the actual outage issues in some regional areas. Sometimes when people are frequently mad around the archipelago and worldwide but, it was too late to apologize for the Negreses and the Dumagueteños in any later reason.
Both SkyCable & NORECO II in Dumaguete are partially apologized for it's heaviest inconvenience, until it's later complied by the NTC (National Telecommunications Commission) & NEA (National Electrification Administration) in a serious fault. Cable Internet & Power was both neturalized all this week from now.
So there you go. This was the actual reason in both companies between SkyCable & NORECO II, for the double-featured outages in Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental. Brownouts, Blackouts and Outages in the Regional parts of Negros Oriental is NOT OK to do so.

HONEST DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed from this news report are not those from the Pilipino Cable Corporation & National Electrification Administration. Ganina hapon, naa siyas likod managers area where we’ll find out unsa among buhaton. And kana xa nga spot kay tunong sa ramp nga gikan sa Ambient area. Ako, gikan kog Ambient, ni agi ko dadto nga ramp tungod kay maoy duol pasulod sa pikas area (Chilled). While ga lakaw kos ramp, girl, si kuya, gi tutukan rako niya while ga lakaw ko. Mura mig nag tinutuka. Ana ko sa akong hunahuna, “hala Lord, mura manig aisle oi. Mura kog padulong sa akong groom nga nag hulat sa altar @.@“ tapos, ni duko ra pud ko ug ni liko, di ko mag pa duol.
Karon napud, pag abot nako sa work. Na tingala ko wala akong name sa any tasks. Naka sulat lang sa ubos, nangutana ko sa isa sa mga leaders kung asa ko naka assign. Wala man gud tao dadto sa managers area where we’ll find out where we are assigned. Pag taod2, ni abot ra si Sir @.@ malamang. Nag joke pa siya nga ang gi sulat daw nga name sa ubos kay pwede muuli @.@ triggered ko kay I need more hours sa work (daghan kog kinahanglan isave @.@) ni react ko, nag katawaha ra pud siya. Naay uban tao nag wonder pud asa sila ibutang. Nangutana dayon siya nako ug “Katrina, what do you want to do” na pressure ko kadjot kay murag lang, managers dont ask us what we want to do @.@ akoy ni give up niya kay murag nalingaw kay siyas iyang gi buhat 🙄 nag palayo na dayon ko.
Nag thank you ra pud ko, and ni adto nako sa locker to get my car keys. Pauli nako.
Guard your heart jud intawon Cecilia. Wag kang magpadala sa iyang mga tinanawan, pagka concern, ug garagara. Niagi nakag drill sauna kay Philip @.@ siya pud, concerned, brother in Christ, gapamansin, sigeg invite nimo sa mga events nga adtu-an niya, ga share pa mo unsay inyong mga plans sa school and sa future (hala oi), ug samot, he talks about you to his close friend AND nag pray pa mo together sa common area. Grabe tong si Philip, di jud nako na malimtan. Pero salamat kaayo kay karon, di nako magpa daá sa mga ingana na mga moobs. Di nata dali ma fall ani. Likayan nato nang mga papansin.
Sige mga guys. Salamat kaayo. Thank you for tuning in! 😆🤯 mangatoog nata. Buntag na. Awoooo.

Graduating Class of Fashion Forward Future Stars 2019
by Pikke Allen, Editor at Large
Graduation Fashion Show 2019
The history of the SF Art Academy is a unique one and particular to the city of San Francisco. Their students and graduating class are a part of fashion history, as the school has
developed and put out into the fashion world many luminaries over the years. It is always a unique and wonderful experience to see what students are doing, their vision of the world and their wonderful spontaneous take on what fashion really means. The Academy of Art is the largest school of art disciplines in the US today, so it may surprise you that its importance to both fashion and culture on the West Coast, can’t be compared to anything else for fashion education in the country today. So, the over 2,000 attendees of the graduating class this year made it the hottest ticket in town.
Drawing on their own personal experiences that are a combination of the naive, or perhaps tentative. Some of the work might even pulled from both internal or external cultural references; sometimes the work is outside the box and inspiring. Some of the designer’s work and creations are so non-commercial as to be commendable. Always, the students present their knowledge gained in this program whether it be textiles, fabric cutting, patternmaking or handcrafts, there is a unique mixture of disciplines expressed in their final collections. Here are some of the highlights that I truly enjoyed and those I felt had real promise in their future in the fashion industry.
One of the unique areas in the show was the menswear, with CHRISTOPHER CABALENA a stand out with his series of white suits, vests and truly futuristic looks that will be a unique addition to a brand looking for new directions in menswear. I feel his work has already predicted a red carpet choice for any music or cinema star and ready for Pharrell Williams, for example would be quite at home in these looks.
My next favorite designer was CLARA M CHANDRA & JACK GUNNIN whose unique placements of textiles and colors harkened back to one of San Francisco’s most unique designers, the team of JEAN MARC who were a powerful duo in the 1970s. mood board says it all and sketches say it all. With contrasting colors and sculptural sleeve extensions, I urge them to go back to see the work of this unique team as they can learn from them. Her cultural heritage from China and Indonesia are expressed in remembrance of her mother’s courage and beauty. Together they worked some magic, whimsey and fun.
My next choice for designer favorite, is ZIYI YE who used her cultural experience of a Chinese folktale to begin her inspiration that ended up in a collection of feminine and soaring shapes in shades of pink red and rose tones. The clothes had a chance to breath on the models are the first steps of what I feel will be a successful evening wear or bridal designer in the future. Her lovely eye for color and shape will be an asset in bringing her ‘youthful’ eye to clothes that will be very appealing to both young and old.
HANAN SABIR ARGAW was another woman designer who really put the graphics and pop back into a runway show, and her work was a crowd pleaser. Her outfits featured the pill-popping colors you see below in her mood board and the circles of pills and related shapes were built into garments that really had a sense of fun and point of view. This is a critical moment for any young designer, trying for and getting a worldview that is just the open door to more exciting things.
ANAN YINAN ZHOU was a remarkable show of how black can have a variety of moods from sad to exultant. The mood board says is all; both despair, extreme emotions and also a poetic glamour that reminded me of work by ALEXANDER MQUEEN in its devastating approach to glamour. There is an opportunity to go beyond the black; I hope this young woman will envision the light as well, but her exploration of the dark side was a standout.
Her runway looks were crowd pleasers, almost mystical and strange but beautiful. Her use of Black in all its forms made us take a closer look at the color, that in itself is both a mood, a design point of view and one of fashion’s favorite ‘non-colors’. I understood the fabrics though basic, were molded into unique shapes. A higher fabric budget will allow her to soar to great heights in the fashion world as she has a deep understanding of the way fabrics can work in sculptural elegant shapes, and so her future looks bright, indeed.
Here are some links for you to see the show in person, yourself in this online reportage of the show. More information on the show is also below.

5 Reasons to Study Abroad in Ghana
By Cody Anderson
A post shared by Cody Anderson (@cdmn37) on Apr 25, 2017 at 7:03pm PDT
This semester I am in a hybrid course called International Storytelling. For two weeks we spent time abroad covering the arts and culture of Ghana. I must admit, two weeks was a relatively small amount of time to spend abroad to claim to know a lot about a place. However, during that time we did more than most study abroad students can fit into a semester abroad. Thanks to the help from some amazing staff members at Webster Ghana who built our itinerary, we traveled across the country meeting hundreds of people along the way who inspired me to write about why you should choose to study abroad in Ghana.
The People
From locals on the streets to the prominent members of society, Ghanaians’ are among the most hospitable and friendly people you can find. From our experience, they work hard, pray often, and dance like nobody’s business. In the two week trip, I bonded with some really down to earth people that treated our group like family rather than the outsiders we were. Ghanaians reminded me that sometimes it just feels good to do things for others without expecting something in return. The youth is full of energy and life, which makes every encounter with a local one that you won’t forget. Below is a picture I took of our instructor at a drumming workshop in Accra.
Cultural Heritage
Ghana is rich with culture and art. Today there is a beautiful blend of traditional and modern art. During our time there we met several performing artists, sculptors, painters, and textile artisans who taught us a lot about the traditional techniques used to make Kente and stamp Adrika symbols. A painter shared with us his inspiration for his paintings. A tree carver showed us how to give something that has died a new purpose. In a place with so much of its traditions and values intact, it's hard to miss the beauty in things all around you.
Peace of Mind
Safety is, of course, everybody's primary concern when traveling to a foreign country. Ghana is quite safe for Western tourists and students to explore. Granted, our hotel was in the East Legon district, which is considered the affluent area of the Accra. During the first few days of our trip, we stuck together and traveled in groups of four or five. But as we became more comfortable with the city, culture, and people, navigating our way around with one other person was simple and easy. To avoid haggling with taxi drivers over prices, we predominantly used the Uber service because it was a fixed price and was almost always cheaper than the lowest price a taxi driver would settle on. Our second week in Ghana, a friend and I heard that locals go running up the Aubri mountain in the mornings. We decided that we had to experience it, too. I highly recommend using the buddy system when traveling anywhere.
Food
Accra offers a comfortable balance of food from all over the world so it is easy to find dishes that remind you of home. But, I highly recommend trying as many local dishes as possible. The wide variety of meals will surely satisfy all your taste buds. My favorite meal was the fufu and tilapia, fufu similar to the texture of bread dough is made by pounding cassava and unripe plantain together, mixed with water and goes well with just about anything. Another local staple that I really enjoyed was dried plantain chips which are delicious and great for a light snack.
Personal Transformation
One of my favorite parts of the experience was our visit to the Anane Memorial International School, a local nonprofit school for children in Nima, Accra. Many of these kids walk for nearly 2 hours to make it to class by 8 am every morning. As an American, I have been fortunate enough to have had opportunities that many have not, opportunities such as school buses and indoor classrooms. Growing up here has come with its privileges and it is easy to forget just how convenient life can be for us. When traveling to rural villages in Ghana, it is hard to miss kids walking to school early in the morning along the highway or the small passenger vans with windows down packed shoulder to shoulder making frequent stops city after cities to pick up more passengers. No matter the length of time someone spends in a place like Ghana, you quickly realize how hard people work for what little they possess. Every day I learned something new about myself from observing and interacting with locals. I was constantly reminded that it is important to be grateful for the simple things in life. Basic things like clean water, food, and shelter are not as easily accessible for a lot of people.

【Ananweb】 PENTAGON first visit to Japan!
Source: ananweb.jp
Jap-Eng trans by: pentagon1010-trans
Do not take out this translation our from this blog. Thank You.
10 members of PENTAGON who just debuted in Korea in 2016 is appearing in ananweb as soon as possible. 10 members will introduce the charm of 10 colors!
PENTAGON, the combination of five elements = pentagon
From the left of back row, Yan An, E’Dawn, Wooseok, Hui, Shinwon, Yeo One, Jinho. From the left of front row, Yuto, Kino, Hongseok.
The chance of debut was through survival program "PENTAGON MAKER", which broadcasted in South Korea. The trainees who has a dream of debut had competed in five categories: "vocal & rap", "dance", "team work", "talent" and "mind". So, it’s PENTAGON = pentagon. Within the program, they received a high evaluation after being judged by BEAST’s Junhyung and Yooseob. 10 members who passed the survival safely, debuted on October 10, 2016 (10並び!)* with the title song "Gorilla". If you thought that the first activity period was over, it isn’t. On December 7th, they released a mini album "Five Senses". It is ultra high speed comeback. Meanwhile, they held their first Japan showcase and it was a great success. PENTAGON is in great momentum!
*T/N: 10並び (10 Narabi) = literally means “10 lined up” because they debuted on October 10 (1010)
Even there is Japanese member! Pentagon, which is rich with International members
The interview was held the day before the showcase. The first visit to Japan is overlapped with their (korean) comeback, didn’t they feel tired ...? Despite the worry of interviewers, PENTAGON is still full of energy. Scribbled on the whiteboard, chatting while having candy. A great cheer to the heaven put in and out! 「This is a boys' school!?」 With the friendly atmosphere, the shooting and interview were proceeds.
From the left, Kino, Hui, Jinho, E’Dawn, Yeo One.
From the left, Wooseok, Yuto, Hongseok, Shinwon, Yan An.
Speaking of PENTAGON's weapon, there are Japanese member, Yuto and Chinese member, Yan An. Of course, Korean members are also attractive and unique. We will introduce the attractiveness of each members with episodes of the interview site. A question: 1. One thing that you wouldn’t lose to other members 2. What is your role in the dorm? Hui. Born in 1993. Main vocal. A firm leader who took the initiative in answering the questions. There is also a reputation for charm. 1. Prank/Joke. Recently, when the clothes that ordered by Shinwon arrived, he wore it and suddenly appeared "Yahoo!" (Laugh). Not only to Shinwon, he will also set up a prank to everyone (other members). 2. As a leader, he is also a commander in the dorm. Jinho. Born in 1992. Main vocal. A man who struggled to continue his trainee for 8 years and fulfilled his dream to debut. During the interview, he always looked at the face of the talking member and smiled. As the eldest brother, he is full of kindness. 1. Ballad. Everyday, he has been studying and listening to the songs that shake his feelings. 2. An alarm clock. Even if he is tired, he can only sleep for 1-2 hours, because he will wake up properly. Hongseok. Born in 1994. Vocalist. He spent his college time in the USA and fluent in English (has good pronunciation!). He experienced studying abroad in China. Even when the cameraman said "pose with a cool feeling", he was the only one who makes a single cute expression. 1. Power. He can carry heavy things unlike everyone else. When he goes to the gym, he can lift up a 70 kg bench press. 2. Cleaning up. His room is always clean. E’Dawn. Born in 1994. Rapper. Among the three rappers, he has a soprano features. In addition to songwriting, variety, etc., he is also in charge of choreography. His hobbies are skateboard, bicycle, shopping, listening to anime’s soundtrack and many more. During the shooting, he was acting cute by standing next to Yeo One and Jinho. 1. Lyrics. He will try to write it down on a smartphone as soon as the lyrics (ideas) come up. 2. Being a good example to his younger brothers. It is an important role!
When asking to have a shoot of five people, the order (line up) was decided unanimously by the height (tall to short). This team, they played a cute game with sleeping face!
Shinwon. Born in 1995. Vocalists. His special skill is being a "model", and he is in charge of visual of the group. Even during the shooting, he decided to take a cool looking pose, such as trying to remove the coat from the shoulder, etc. He has extremely dog phobia. 1. Shoulder. His shoulder width is wider than the other members. 2. A messy role (laugh). His roommate, Hongseok is in charge of cleaning up (the room).
Yan An. Born in 1996. Vocalist. He debuted in about a year and he is from Shanghai, China. During the interview, there is a scene when Japanese member, Yuto translating the Chinese language that Yan An speaks the most into Korean. 1. Chinese. It is convenient to remember "Tsu Suo Xin Er". The meaning is ... "Where is the toilet?" (Laugh). 2. A role (to give a) of quiet mood.
Yeo One. Born in 1996. Vocalist. He has a nice personality, such as teaching Korean to Yan An who is from China. 1. Selca. He had a knack of taking many pictures. You can take a good picture in a bright place when holding the camera up. 2. When Jinho, who is not so sleepy, said, "I will go to bed today", his role is to tell everyone that "Today is Jinho's sleeping day".
Wooseok. Born in 1998. Rapper. His height is 188 cm! Have a nickname for "Giant Maknae". A mood maker of the group, sprinkle innocent maknae. His laughing voice sounded like bass, which was echoing the site of interview. 1. The length of leg. The length is 108 cm (while translating Yuto’s interview, he also confirmed many times, so it's no doubt, it is 108 cm). 2. Love doing skinship and set up a prank likes dog!
Yuto. Born in 1998. Rapper. He is from Nagano Prefecture. When the members get excited too much on site, they said "静かに~/shizuka ni~(be quiet~)" or explain about "anan", it is really dependable. Yuto was crying when his parents came to the showcase in Japan! 1. Low voice. He has the lowest bass voice among the members. 2. A cat that is difficult to reclusive/withdraw* in the room (laugh). A dog of Wooseok's roommate.
*T/N: 引きこもりがちな (hikikomori-gachina)= adolescents or adults who tend to withdraw from social life, often seeking extreme degrees of isolation and confinement. In a good way, it means that Yuto likes to spend his (spare) time in the room than being outside ^^
Kino. Born in 1998. Vocalist. He has a good dance skill and choreograph as well, other members also receive tremendous trust. Besides Yuto, Kino is also fluent in Japanese, he answered almost the interview in Japanese. 1. Dance. Sometimes he taught girl group dances to the members and they danced together. 2. His role is not to do anything (laugh). Because he is in the same room with E’Dawn and Hui, so somebody will do it (cleaning, etc).
180 cm over team! When five members with the appearance of model lined up together, it is a masterpiece! Once Wachawacha started, it did not stop.
PENTAGON, boy group with Japanese, Korean and Chinese members, what kind of global activity that they will show to us? Keep an eye on them! Let's watch Pentagon’s video message which taken by ananweb.
