Okay actually I have so many thoughts about this piece. They're carved so delicately, their likenesses are wonderful- this is something created by someone who loves bats, and you can see it in their foft expressions and gleaming little eyes, the accuracy of their features and anatomy, bats are so oft misrepresented, drawn as a vague amalgamation of various features different species have, but even beyond that- folded in wings are a point that most artists even those who love bats get wrong without decent observation, myself included. Even down to the fact she has two pups, many people really have no idea of bat litter sizes. And the way they're represented! A far cry from the 'scary' depictions most associate with bats, either through media or a general fear of something strange and fast flying. This is a caring, mothering scene, warm and full of love, from the mother bat to her adorable pups, and from the artist to their subject. Incredible. And being from a period potentially before high quality up close video and photography were widely available makes this even more impressive given how difficult it is to get a good look at a bat in person, especially a microbat like these!
