Doctor Tenma, para todos ustedes las vidas son creadas iguales, por eso volví a la vida. ¿Pero se lo ha dado cuenta ahora finalmente, verdad? Sólo una cosa es igual para todos, y eso es la muerte.

So I’ve loved Monster (the anime) since I watched it one summer back in 2014. It’s such a beautiful goddamn anime like it’s the one show I’ll be like “ignore the anime, ITS AMAZING please god just watch it Martha” I have a couple favourite characters, and a couple of them being the twins. They’re fascinating.

It’s shot from the very front row of the stalls at the side so, although this causes a lot of problems for the brave person who filmed it, we DO get many nice close-ups and a chance to see the show from quite an unusual angle at times! Very clear sound throughout. This one got rather long..
jorrynoftheroundtable replied to your post “There’s a distinct theming behind the talents gathered. In DR1, there…”
Might I suggest an alternate viewpoint? In DR1 the ultimate talents all were themed similarly to classic crime novels- detectives, gang leaders, smartass heirs In DR2 the ultimates all had some aspect of Junko- the obvious is Komaeda, but also Akane, who was essentially Junko and Aoi’s child Perhaps there’s some theming to the characters in V3?
(*realizes I forgot to finish the thought I had*) To me, it looks like everyone connects to a classic intrigue plot. Shadow governments. Supreme leaders and detectives. Ouma suggested he was the leader of the Ultimate Hunt, but what if it's not *just* ouma?
Oh boy, the theming is a doozy, especially since the overall theme of the game is truth and lies! What I believe to be happening is that there’s a running theme of corruption which connects to the situation that they are all in - and indeed Kokichi Ouma - and nefarious (unwilling, even?) use of each of their talents. That they surrendered memories relating to talents and never quite got them all back (as in, Ultimate Hunt specifics are missing!) is curious.
As for a common point akin to DR1′s classic theme, it runs deep and unsettling when you factor in other WWII references than just a title of Supreme Leader; in the Ultimates’ birthdays, [there’s quite a few] of them, with Tsumugi’s being the most major what with being Victory over Japan day (emphasis, because Victory is what Kodaka named ‘V3′ after)
Consider also:
An artist with a power for brainwashing (Hitler was an artist)
An anthropologist associated with torture (Mengele was the most notorious, who experimented on twins) and with the occult (Hitler showed interest in that too, and Ch3 has a major focus on it even).
A magician- an infamous quote goes ‘great liars make great magicians’
A detective, whose talent room is more associated with a criminal than a detective (a nod to Nazi-Germany era detectives being corrupted). Interesting how this would be our protagonist.
An astronaut- the first object to reach space was a German rocket in wartime (and it was even called the V-2!)
A shadow-Prime Minister who shares a lastname with Japan’s wartime PM (unsure about the maid part, but)
A robot made for war
Speaking of the real Kokichi Ouma’s as ‘Supreme Leader’, it brings to mind Johan Liebert of Monster since he along with his twin Ana was bred to be a leader of the human race, and has an effective talent for manipulation and lies. It would make sense that he was the top talent among them, and that the situation surrounding the Ultimates connects to his own.
[Not connected to talents, but:
A room with a movie theatre, and Monokuma’s own theatre which looks old-school (who liked their movies, and propaganda? Hitler)
A logo with a strong theme of imprisonment (heck, a kanji for ‘prison(er)’ is used in the name Saishuu!), chains and a dog tag to boot
Mentions of Europe, indicators that they’re far away from home (in Europe, even), the library having unrecognisable languages, hmm]
As for Kokichi Ouma leading of the Ultimate Hunt, it’s funny, Monokuma skirts around the matter of his connection to the Hunt and doesn’t give them any more details than that. It’s hard to say what his exact connection was, but it’s also interesting that Kirumi is a shadow-PM, while Kokichi is a ‘Supreme Leader’, neither of them actually front and centre but rather behind the scenes, and having some powerful influence. Why Kirumi ran away, what Kokichi did to the country to bring disaster, there’s a connecting point somewhere in there.
A rather large tangent there but the larger background theming is a messy one to say the least (it’s a bit of a landmine to go too far in, oof). The point though, is just like how memories are broken up into Flashback lights and embellished with lies, so too are characters’ connections and it’s quite.. fascinating how broken and twisted things are when you look for that theming and connection. Says a lot for how things are in this place, really- not so obvious on the surface.
