I was tagged by @faustiandevil for this one. 9 albums I've been listening to recently. I have a terribly random music taste, so it's a bit of a weird eclectic mix, but this seems like a good cross section of all the ones I've been listening to. I think there's something of a common element... I think? I suppose I like originality, and I definitely like to listen to music that's fast and angry/energetic.

This doesn't fit exactly with one song per night, but it's a little taste of Hanukkah music.

1) I Won't Be Home For Chanukah by TeamMate [English]

This isn't a song that I've typically run into on these lists of suggested songs, and I suspect it's because the song's a little bit of a downer with the focus on not being able to make it home for Hanukkah this year. However, it fits a particular 'young adult not being to make it home to celebrate with family :(' vibe that hits my nostalgia buttons even if I've never actually lived this exact experience.

2) Candle Blessings as performed by Choral Arts Philadelphia [Hebrew]

I just ran into this version on a list of Hanukkah songs; it's possible that the Hanukkah Cantata isn't super familiar outside of choral arrangements.

Alternative: Chanukah Prayer by Carole King [Hebrew].

3) Ma'oz Tzur - Moroccan Melody as performed by Rabbi Haim Biton, Maimon Cohen, Shimon Iluz, and the Andalusalam Orchestra [Hebrew].

'Rock of Ages' is sung after lighting one's hanukkiah.

Alternative: Ma'oz Tzur by Leslie Odom Jr and Nicolette Robinson [Hebrew].

4) Hanerot Halalu recording from Chabad [Hebrew]

As explained by the rabbi leading our Hanukkah class, 'Hanerot Halalu' is more of a traditional song that's usually after Ma'oz Tzur as an explanation of only using Hanukkah candles for Hanukkah. (This version adds in extra English lyrics.)

Alternative: Haneirot Halalu by Six13 [English and Hebrew].

5) Oh Hanukkah by Jack Black [English]

'Oh Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah' has been covered by more than one artist, but I mostly recognize this version after it went around Jumblr [Jewish Tumblr] a few years back.

Alternative: Oy Chanukah, Oy Chanukah by the Klezmer Conservatory Band [Yiddish]; Chanukah, Oh Chanukah by Theodore Bikel [Yiddish and English].

6) Al Hanissim by Six13 (and additional ensemble singers) [Hebrew and English]

Al Hanisim is an addition in the Amidah and Birkot Hamazon [grace after meals] on Hanukkah (and Purim).

Alternative: Al haNissim, a Jewish Amsterdam Chamber Ensemble cover of Izhar Cohen's version of 'Al haNissim' [Hebrew].

7) Bimuelo by Sarah Aroeste (featuring Kosha Dillz) [English and "Bimuelo" (Ladino)]

This is a Hanukkah song off Sarah Aroeste's Ladino and English album, Together / Endjuntos. There's not really an alternative to this specific song, but if you'd like more Sarah Aroeste, Ma'oz Tzur (Ladino) is from her Hanuká! album.

8) Ocho Kandelikas by Flory Jagoda [Ladino]

Composed by Flory Jagoda, the above linked version is also performed by her.

Alternative: Ocho Kandelikas by Idina Menzel.
