AMS Neve 8803

現行のAMS NeveはNeveの音なのかと聞かれれば、これはどこでも言われている通りで、現行AMS Neveは一般的に言われるNeveの音とは違う音だと思う。一般的なNeveの音というそれ自体、共通認識を共有できるものなのかすら定かではないけども、一応70年代の頃のNeveの音を一般的に言われるNeveの音とするなら、現行AMS Neveはそれとは別の音だと思う。どこが違うのかと言われれば、一番は質の部分だと思う。繊細さ、奥行きの深さ、密度などの数値で表せない部分ではあるけども、そこはやはり道具としての印象を大きく左右する。

僕はヴィンテージのNeveは持っていないけども、70年代のCalrec PQ1161を持っていて、このEQ/Preはこの時代のヴィンテージNeveにも通づる重厚な質感を持っている。それと比べるとAMS Neveの音は軽いと言えるし、基本的には大味な音がすると思う。例えば、PQ1161の15Kハイシェルフを持ち上げた時の1161のトーンは、正しく「シルキー」と形容するしかない繊細で鋭く、且つ厚みのある音が鳴るんだが、それと比べると8803の音は、そこから高級なシルクのような質感を連想することは難しい。

とは言うものの、そのキャラクターの部分では、現行AMS Neveと70年代のNeveには共通項はあると言って良いのではないかと、個人的には思っている。例えばYouTubeなどでたまに見かけるNeve VRのラッキングモジュールの音は、VRそのものがAMSと合併した後のモデルだけに、8803と良く似た音が鳴っている。一方で、そのVRは70年代のNeveの音を継承しているのが分かる音がしており、8803の音は一般的に言われるNeveの音ではないという側面がありつつも、VRシリーズを間に挟むことで、今のAMS NeveもNeveの音を継承してるんだ。。ということが理解できたりする。

下の動画は古いNeveとVRの質感の違いが良く出てる動画なので、自分も参考にした動画の一つなので貼っておく。

8803は、上の動画に出てくるVRの暖色系のトーンが、もう少しドンシャリになるイメージだと思う。良く言えば都会的な音で透明感が増すと形容できると思うし、悪く言えば音が冷たくなる、コントラストが強すぎる、になると思う。そういう違いはありつつも、音の大味さ加減も含めた音のキャラクターは、この動画のVRの持つ大味さも含め、物凄く似ていると言える。つまり、8803の宣伝文句に嘘は一切なく、これはコンソールに入っているEQそのもので、マスタリングEQの持つ繊細さや解像度の高さはないにせよ、トラッキングに必要なクオリティーの部分ではかなり優秀、という事になるんだと思う。そして優秀なアナログアウトボードのEQは、プラグインEQの5dBブーストでも申しわけ程度のブーストにしかならないそれとは、明らかに一線を画すと思う。

例えば、本当は重たくザックザクなディストーションギターのつもりの録音が、意に反して迫力に欠ける音が録音されていたり、或いはキックドラムをフロアタムで代用した質素なアコースティックセッションを後からやっぱりビートの重心を下げたいなどの、帯域のブーストがメインになるサージカルな用途では、8803は非常に優秀な仕事をしてくれると思う（もちろん限界はあるけども）。

また、音圧を最後にガツンと上げたいという場合、音圧を上げるのに邪魔な帯域をプラグインでガッツリ削ってしまうと、元の音にあった音の太さや輪郭が損なわれてしまう場合も多いんだが、8803なら音の迫力やキレのある輪郭をそのまま、或いは元以上の迫力やキレのある音に仕上げつつ、音圧を上げるのに邪魔な帯域をトラッキングの時点でガッツリ削る事が出来ると思う。

一方で、物凄く繊細に録音されたソースの細部をできる限り残したい用途には、その大味な鳴り方から、ほぼ向かないと思う。例えばメインボーカルには、自分はまず使わない（ジャンルにも依るけど）。

今DAWでのEQの使い方は、基本的にはほぼプラグインを使うのが主流のようで、アウトボードを使う場合は稀な事のようなんだが、考えるに、今の時代これだけI/Oの性能が上がってくると、一旦録音されたソースをアウトボードを経由してバウンスして音を整え、最後に細かくプラグインでまとめる手法が、再び見直されていくのではないだろうか。00年代初頭にソフトシンセをプリアンプに通してアナログ感を稼ぐ、のようなやり方が流行ったものの、当時のI/Oの性能の低さ故に起こる劣化がネックになって、アウトボードを介したバウンスは廃れる方向にあったんだが、昨今のI/Oの進化によりそのネガティブ要素は大分解消されているのではないだろうか。

2020年代に突入し、これだけプラグインが進化してもプラグインは依然としてプラグインの音でしかなく、倍音付加や音像の崩れなささ等、立体音像を作る上でアナログアウトボードのアドバンテージは、まだまだ大きいと思う。

尚、8803にステレオのリンク機能はないので、ステレオの位相合わせは手間がかかる。ステレオで使う場合の位相合わせは、左右のパンをセンターにしてモノラル状態で左右のチャンネルミュートを交互に行って、その差を確認したり、左右をモノラルで出しっ放しにしてフェイザー効果を聞いたり、ケースバイケースでやり方は変わるけれども、何れにしても慣れは必要。

因みに8803にはUSBを介したリコール機能があるので、それのコピペでステレオリンクが出来るのでは？という話があるようなんだが、うちの環境でそのUSBを介したリコール機能が動いてくれなかったので、それからまだ試していない。もっとも、そのUSBリコール機能は単なるガイドに過ぎず、結局は「手」で合わせるしかないので、頑張ってその機能を使おうというモチベーションも湧かず、放置プレイのまま。でも、やっぱり使えたら便利そうなので、どこかでまた試してみたい。
