All the Stars and Teeth Book Review
Tumblr media
Spoilers Below
All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace My rating: 5 of 5 stars brief mention of personal mental health issues at the beginning I have loved, and I mean loved pirates and mermaids since I was really little. According to my mom The Little Mermaid was rewound on the VCR Player at minimum, three times a day before I was old enough for preschool. I even have a giant thigh tattoo of mermaid scales because there are scars underneath them from a very bad time in my life that I almost had to go to the hospital for, and I decided that I wanted mermaid scales because it would make me happy to see them every day. They still do after three years. I plan to get more pieces in random spots of my body by different artists as I get older.

Anyway, you're not here for my life's story, but I thought I'd put this book and the elements of it in perspective for you! So, I've read Adalyn Grace before, but sort of backwards order. I read Belladonna first, then this one. I had no clue what to expect other than I have a signed paperback from YallFest and I needed to at least like the book. I fucking ate this up. This was amazing. Every minute of it held my attention. I tabbed so much, and would have tabbed more if I had not started reading prior to Christmas as I got an entire annotation kit for the holidays from my parents! This whole novel was so beautifully written, that a lot of the time I forgot this was her debut. I loved how one like myself could go into it assuming a love triangle was going to occur between Amora and Ferrick and Bastian, but Adalyn Grace so - well - gracefully subverted that expectation with Vataea! I thought that she was going to fail in the beginning, but in a way where her magic wouldn't show, not that she would lose control! I had no thought to the idea that she could lose her magic in that fight with Kaven, though I'm very aware looking back that the cave scene certainly set up for it, but it all moved so fast it didn't sink in until after! Even when Bastian is drunk and admits to being Kaven's brother after the whole "no secrets talk", I prepared for a "I hate you now I'm gonna get captured by walking away and have to be saved" or something like that, but Amora shocked me with her maturity an the way she handled the situation I was so delighted! I love the way magic works in this world, the world-building was immaculate, there's very little that I didn't get out of this that I wish I had. In fact only two things did I wish for at the end - one, more time and possibly even points of view with Vataea, and same with Ferrick, though Vataea was definitely more important to me. Now I'm not sure if we'll get her pov in the next one, but I hope we'll at least get to spend more time with her! Also this would make a phenomenal film oh my god! Anyway I'm gonna go debate whether to start the next book right now or read one of my new books!

just got to the part in all the stars and teeth where amora meets vataea and there’s no way amora is straight. yeah, she goes back to fawning over bastian in the next scene but the way she describes vataea’s beauty is not straight
like, she’s trying to not stare at her lips and notice how soft they looked? choking out her words when vataea approaches? this girl 💅
“it only works on those susceptible to a woman’s charm” then this must be Amora’s first bi panic; poor girl doesn’t even know it yet

All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace
Set in a kingdom where danger lurks beneath the sea, mermaids seek vengeance with song, and magic is a choice. She will reign. As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer — the master of souls. I am the right choice. The only choice. And I will protect my kingdom.
The Reader by Traci Chee
Sefia knows what it means to survive. After her father is brutally murdered, she flees into the wilderness with her aunt Nin, who teaches her to hunt, track, and steal. But when Nin is kidnapped, leaving Sefia completely alone, none of her survival skills can help her discover where Nin’s been taken, or if she’s even alive. The only clue to both her aunt’s disappearance and her father’s murder is the odd rectangular object her father left behind, an object she comes to realize is a book—a marvelous item unheard of in her otherwise illiterate society. With the help of this book, and the aid of a mysterious stranger with dark secrets of his own, Sefia sets out to rescue her aunt and find out what really happened the day her father was killed—and punish the people responsible.

Synopsis: She will reign.

A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever.
I am the right choice. The only choice. And I will protect my kingdom.
Review:
So this is what happens when you put too much pressure on one person. Mistakes happen but... that doesn't mean you can over react either. Amora is preparing to make her performance to prove her worth to the kingdom. But gosh, her support system sucks. You know you aren't supposed to stress people before a big exam. Well these people failed that. So after Amora's presentation goes horribly wrong she gets thrown in prison with the only person on her side is her childhood friend and fiance, Ferrick. Again love him but I am so glad that Amora is straight up with him and us. Love you but not in love with you. Then there is the plots against the kingdom, a very mysterious and sexy pirate and a mermaid who gives me life. So poor Amora has alot on her plate. I loved the world building and though I wished it could have been explored more, I understand that it's hard to do so in a duology. It was a good adventure with various locations and threats and characters that are likeable. Like seriously Vataea, Mermaid queen slaying it up and down. Another thing that I loved that the story was about saving the kingdom it was never about Amora being a girl, or her struggling between Ferrick and Bastian (pirate) but rather her need to save her home. My only complaint is that the end was a bit rushed but still a great read. I can't wait for the sequel.

okay, hear me out: a Naruto x All the Stars and Teeth AU.
i don't know how or why my brain conjured this idea. i'm also only nine chapters in so i don't know how accurate it will be by the time i get to the end of the book, but i'm already invested in the idea.
(book blurb & connections below the cut; it was way longer than expected)
if you don't know what All the Stars and Teeth is, it's a fantasy book written by Adalyn Grace (not to be confused for Addison Grace, the singer) and it's great so far; i would definitely recommend reading it.
i'm bad at summarizing things, so i'm just going to put the blurb of the book so i don't accidentally spoil anything major:
"As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer -- the master of souls. The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it's never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her master of the monarchy's dangerous soul magic.
When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he'll help her prove she's fit to rule, if she'll help him reclaim his stolen magic.
But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder -- and more peril -- than Amora anticipated.
A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she'll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stowaway she never expected . . . or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever."
i got the idea mostly because of the similarities between this cast and Team 7:
Amora harbors soul magic, a powerful, dangerous magic that comes from an ancient beast that her ancestor sealed within her bloodline that only the royal family of the kingdom can use and master
Naruto is the host of Kurama, a dangerous beast that grants powerful abilities if one can master him, as members of the Uzumaki family were entrusted with keeping Kurama sealed away as his jinchurikis
Bastian is from Zudoh, the sixth island in the kingdom which was banished from the kingdom and is now where the big bad is coming from, who's motivated by recovering his magic and stopping this force
Sasuke is part of the Uchiha Clan, which was detested by Konoha for fear of corruption and evil and were ultimately destroyed (mostly) in the Uchiha Massacre, though the big bad ended up coming from this clan and Sasuke is motivated by achieving enough power to avenge his clan (in whatever form this vengeance took)
Amora's fiancé, Ferrick (who i assume is the stowaway the blurb mentions unless something else happens) hails from the island where restoration magic is taught but is a prodigy in it: being able to heal others and himself from even mortal wounds (such as losing a hand) and while he's stubborn about letting Amora go, he ultimately tags along with her to help
Sakura is obviously talented in medical ninjutsu, having trained under the Sannin Tsunade, and mastered the 100 Healings technique, something only done by Tsunade before her, and is also incredibly stubborn, but works to help Naruto in any way (even by feigning getting over Sasuke so he wouldn't feel obligated to chase him for her)
that's all i've got at the moment (save for a few minor/given characters) but i'm interested to see how this AU might play out

Rating: 5/5 Book Blurb: Through blood and sacrifice, Amora Montara has conquered a rebellion and taken her rightful place as queen of Visidia. Now, with the islands in turmoil and the people questioning her authority, Amora cannot allow anyone to see her weaknesses.
No one can know about the curse in her bloodline. No one can know that she’s lost her magic. No one can know the truth about the boy who holds the missing half of her soul. To save herself and Visidia, Amora embarks on a desperate quest for a mythical artifact that could fix everything―but it comes at a terrible cost. As she tries to balance her loyalty to her people, her crew, and the desires of her heart, Amora will soon discover that the power to rule might destroy her.
Review:
The final adventure is here at last and boy is it a wild one. I had so much fun reading this book and THAT ENDING?!?!? I CAN’T BELIEVE IT! This was such a fun conclusion to the series and getting to see the characters one last time was emotional. The book picks up after the last battle in the first book with Amora finally getting the throne and we get to see her deal with ruling, the struggles of of it, and whether or not she can deal with it. The romance and tension in this book was amazing and the friendships were fragile.
This book has fantastic characters, amazing world building, and that magic system? AWESOME! This was everything I could ask for in a book, its got sexy pirates, mermaids, enemies to lovers, high seas journey, and a kick butt female protagonist. Please go give this series a go as it is truly such a gem!

A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stowaway she never expected...or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever.
Star Rating: 4/5
My Thoughts: This book pleasantly surprised me. I received this book in my first ever OwlCrate subscription box (the February box), and I have to say that it’s definitely not one that I would have picked up on my own. A big selling point of this novel is that it deals with pirates, and that’s not usually a huge plus for me. However, Bastian might be one of the only pirates I actually like.
The world in this is so rich and interesting. The magic system is one that I can’t really remember reading about before, where you are able to choose your own magic, you’re not just born with it. There is a twist in this that turns what we know of the rules and the origin of the magic system on its head. I found both the myth and the twist to be very compelling and interesting. I really, really love the magic system and the world of this book. I find it to be so unique and intriguing, and I’m very interested to see how things will change going forward.
There were a few times throughout the novel where I couldn’t decide if I liked Amora or not. At times she felt very self-centered and arrogant, but that also kind of drew me to her. Usually, if a book involves a princess, she’s selfless and wonderful. Amora wasn’t always that, but she did want to always do right by her kingdom. As usual, I felt as if the side characters could have been fleshed out more, so I hope to see more of them in the future, and get to know them a little better. This book had the makings of a great found family, and I can’t wait to see if they develop into one of my favorite found families in the coming books.
The main critique I have is that, at several points in the book, there seemed to be a disconnect. For example, Amora is sailing from one island to another and states that it will be a long journey in one chapter, but in the next the ship has arrived at the new island. There were just several moments like this where things didn’t quite fit with what was happening or I felt as if I had skipped a few pages.
Overall, as I said, this book really surprised me, and has made me excited for the next one.

Currently reading & most recent purchase.

I’m currently reading “All the Stars and Teeth” by Adalyn Grace.
“As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer—the master of souls. I’m about 100 pages into this book, it was February’s Owlcrate book and I’m trying to catch up on my TBR. I’m not sure how I’m feeling about this book just yet.  I believe this is Grace’s debut novel. It’s written in first person which I’m not a huge fan of. I love a lot of detail and world building especially in a Fantasy novel and I feel that is easily left out when written in first person. But, I have seen some great reviews on this book, so I’m keeping an open mind. I’ll post a review when I’m finished!
Tumblr media
These lovely books were delivered today. All purchases are online due to our current state. I read both “Ash Princess” and “Lady Smoke” by Laura Sebastian last year and have been not so patiently waiting for “Ember Queen” to be released. I couldn’t find it in store last month when it was released, but Amazon pulled through and my package arrived in like 2 days. I’ve noticed a lot of negative reviews on this series, but I’ve loved it so far and can’t wait to finish it!
I’ve been going back and forth on the ACOTAR  series by Sarah J. Maas. I’ve heard great things about the series and with her new Adult release I think it’s about time I dive into this series.
I’ll be posting full reviews or a little blurb on each when I’m finished!
Happy Reading!
